  1. Well, good afternoon everyone and lovely to be here today. My name is Paul, I'm part of the leadership team here and it's my privilege to bring us God's Word this morning.

  2. Let me just guide you in terms of what we're going to be doing for the rest of our time together.

  3. I will be speaking for a while and after that we'll be having an opportunity since it's the first Sunday of the month to share communion together for all those who want to stay.

  4. We are in week three of looking at the Lord's Prayer and my reading today is in Matthew chapter 6 verse 11.

    Matthew 6:11

  5. That is the Lord's Prayer and the reading, the verses we're looking at are just verse 11.

  6. Reading is, give us this day our daily bread. I wonder if I managed to complete the reading before some of you had found it in your Bibles.

  7. Well, don't worry, you've got plenty of time to find it because that's where we're going to be dwelling.

  8. Just in these seven words, give us this day our daily bread.

  9. And it's been wonderful for me to be able to really just reflect on those seven words as I've been preparing.

  10. Let me remind you of the context.

  11. Graham spoke to us last Sunday on the subject of attuning our life to the Father's frequency.

  12. As he focused on the words just before that,

  13. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  14. And he really challenged us to look out and to look at the church and to look into our lives

  15. and to reflect on what the Lord's will would be in each of those spheres.

  16. And after such lofty thoughts,

  17. in some ways,

  18. as I've focused on the Lord's Prayer,

  19. it seems a little bit surprising that the very next words,

  20. grand themes about God's glory,

  21. and we go on to important themes about repentance and forgiveness,

  22. are these seven simple words.

  23. Give us this day our daily bread.

  24. I'd like to look at each word.

  25. And if it's okay with you,

  26. I'd like to look at the last word first,

  27. the word bread.

  28. Because as I've studied this over recent days,

  29. I've discovered that through the history of the church,

  30. theologians have sometimes got themselves into a terrible fankel over the word bread.

  31. I think so much so that it seems there's almost been massive fights and disagreements

  32. over what Jesus meant when he set out this model prayer and said,

  33. give us this day our daily bread.

  34. And some have thought,

  35. well, clearly Jesus couldn't possibly be referring to bread.

  36. That would be in some ways,

  37. you know,

  38. inappropriate.

  39. So he must have been referring to bread as an illustration of God's words.

  40. And indeed,

  41. one of our earlier songs quite rightly used the idea of daily bread being the way in which God feeds us through his word.

  42. And that's perfectly biblical,

  43. but some have perhaps said that's all it can be.

  44. Others have said,

  45. no,

  46. no,

  47. no,

  48. you've got that wrong.

  49. When we're talking about give us this day our daily bread,

  50. there's a reference there to communion,

  51. right?

  52. The bread that is the body of Christ,

  53. and it's a reference to the fact that we need to be fed by Jesus.

  54. And we do so as we take communion.

  55. It's clearly not just bread.

  56. And then right about the time of the Reformation,

  57. it seems that along came others,

  58. and apologies to the theologians,

  59. I know I'm generalizing pretty broadly here,

  60. right?

  61. But they came along and said,

  62. maybe bread means bread.

  63. And actually,

  64. maybe it is the case that when Jesus says,

  65. give us this day our daily bread,

  66. it's okay to pray for the stuff that we need.

  67. Bread is an incredibly universal item.

  68. So basic.

  69. I wonder how many of you have bought bread this week.

  70. Just in case some of you are not sure what bread is,

  71. I thought I would bring along a loaf of bread.

  72. One of the many that I have purchased this week.

  73. And I've been among those in the UK who have purchased 11 million loaves of bread this week.

  74. I bought this one in Morrison's.

  75. It's a Coburg Cobb and it costs 50 pence.

  76. I was reflecting this morning,

  77. I could definitely have paid six times the price

  78. had I bought it in one of the little boutiques in Brunstfield.

  79. But of course,

  80. that may have been worth it because it wouldn't have come in one of these plastic wrappers.

  81. It would have come in a paper bag.

  82. And maybe even slightly more stale.

  83. But nevertheless,

  84. I might have quite enjoyed paying six times the price.

  85. But what sort of bread have you purchased this week?

  86. I wonder.

  87. And did any of us pray beforehand that we would be able to have, purchase or receive that bread?

  88. Or did we proceed with, I suppose, presumption, maybe understandably,

  89. that there'd be no issues whatsoever with us obtaining that bread?

  90. I suspect most of us were in the latter category.

  91. So why then is it that Jesus includes this reference to bread in this model prayer?

  92. Well, I suppose the first point that I take from it is perhaps a recognition that God knows all that we need.

  93. He knows and understands our need for food, for water, but also our needs for so many other things.

  94. And I think in this very basic, in this encouragement to pray for our most basic needs,

  95. we are to be reminded in our prayers that there is nothing,

  96. there is nothing too small that we cannot bring to God in our prayers.

  97. And there is nothing too big that we cannot bring to God in our prayers.

  98. Reflect, please, for just a minute on the things that you've prayed for this week.

  99. And are you remembering, am I remembering,

  100. to bring to God my prayers and my needs for the small things,

  101. and also for the big things?

  102. Let's unpack this a bit more as we think about some of the other seven words.

  103. And I'd like to look at the first two now.

  104. The words, give us.

  105. And my title, as we go through the other six words, I'll have three titles.

  106. And this one, I suggest, gives us a sense of childlike dependence.

  107. You see, there's no particular deal going on here.

  108. This is not about some sort of contractual relationship.

  109. This is not about us saying to our Heavenly Father,

  110. now we have done certain things for you,

  111. and in return, what we require is this back.

  112. But in this incredibly simple phrase, give us,

  113. I think we see a sense of simplicity and a great sense of need.

  114. And I'd like you to imagine just a child and the needs of a child.

  115. Isn't it the case that adulthood brings such a great sense of self-sufficiency in many ways?

  116. We're adults and we need to be in control and we need to have a plan for the day,

  117. for the week, for the month, for the year.

  118. And we look at our bank statement and we look at our pensions savings,

  119. our statement, and we look at what we've got and we work out whether it's sufficient

  120. and we worry about it and we stress about it.

  121. And children do none of those things.

  122. Children look to their parents and expect that their parents will quite simply provide for them.

  123. Even though Elizabeth and I's children are growing up a bit and are 8 and 11,

  124. there is still a sense of absolute dependence on us for their food.

  125. And there is also an absolute expectation that it's certainly not the case

  126. that the Tesco shopping will be delivered on a Monday

  127. and it will go into the cupboard and we'll then say,

  128. well, just fend for yourselves.

  129. The food's there.

  130. Rather, there's a whole process of planning, of preparing, of cooking, of cutting,

  131. of serving, of providing, of clearing, of washing,

  132. which we as parents, or in most cases Elizabeth as mother,

  133. is undertaking in order to provide for our children who are expecting to receive from us.

  134. And I wonder if we might need to recapture,

  135. as we focus on this few small words in this incredibly important prayer,

  136. our sense of childlike dependence on God for everything.

  137. I wonder if some of us have become a little bit too sophisticated and self-sufficient.

  138. And whether at times that necessary planning for life and for adulthood

  139. ends up leading to a sense that in our faith and our relationship with God,

  140. we are self-sufficient in that sphere as well.

  141. We're not.

  142. Let's remember the words of the hymn which says,

  143. Nothing in my hands I bring

  144. Simply to thy cross I cling

  145. Naked, run to thee for dress

  146. Helpless, look to thee for grace

  147. Foul I to the fountain fly

  148. Wash me, saviour, or I die

  149. Last time I was speaking, I shared with you some of my challenges this year.

  150. As I suffered a tricky problem with my eyes

  151. and couldn't drive and couldn't work for a little while

  152. Of realising quite suddenly

  153. that even such a small thing going wrong

  154. could have profound consequences

  155. and making me realise I am not in control.

  156. And challenging me about whether actually

  157. I'm living my life with a sense of

  158. childlike dependence on my heavenly father.

  159. That week, one of the books that I read

  160. was a great book by Louis Giglio

  161. called I Am Not But I Know I Am

  162. and it's a book based on the story of John the Baptist

  163. as he looked to Jesus and said

  164. Jesus must increase and I must decrease

  165. and Louis Giglio says this in the book

  166. Admitting we are not God

  167. not in control

  168. not running anything

  169. not responsible for everyone's wellbeing

  170. not the solution for everything and everyone

  171. not at the centre of all things

  172. does not belittle us

  173. but rather frees us.

  174. I am not

  175. but I know

  176. the one who is

  177. I am.

  178. Let's be people

  179. let's be a church

  180. marked by

  181. childlike

  182. dependence

  183. on God

  184. for our bread

  185. and for every other aspect

  186. of life.

  187. Let's move on to some of the other words.

  188. Give us

  189. this day

  190. and then the word

  191. daily.

  192. Give us

  193. this day

  194. our

  195. daily bread

  196. and if we've thought about

  197. childlike

  198. dependence

  199. I think those

  200. three words

  201. this day

  202. and daily

  203. encourage us

  204. to reflect on our

  205. continual

  206. dependence

  207. on God.

  208. Yesterday's faith

  209. in many respects

  210. won't be sufficient

  211. and all of us

  212. are invited

  213. once again

  214. today

  215. to trust God

  216. afresh

  217. for all that we need.

  218. If I

  219. left that bread

  220. and decided

  221. that I would keep it sitting

  222. and would come back to it

  223. for my food

  224. in

  225. two or three

  226. or four weeks time

  227. well

  228. would that be sensible?

  229. Of course not.

  230. It would be rotten.

  231. And so

  232. bread

  233. is something

  234. that needs to be

  235. renewed

  236. and refreshed

  237. so regularly

  238. and for some of you

  239. you'll already be there

  240. in the story

  241. of God's people

  242. in the book of Exodus

  243. in chapter 16

  244. where God provided to them

  245. manna from heaven

  246. that flaky stuff

  247. a bit like frosties

  248. that was landing

  249. on the ground

  250. when they were

  251. struggling without

  252. any food at all

  253. and they looked

  254. and they thought

  255. this is fantastic

  256. that these frosties are here

  257. and some of them

  258. gathered up

  259. tons and tons and tons

  260. and thought

  261. we'll keep it

  262. and we'll keep it in containers

  263. and it will last

  264. for many days

  265. and God had already

  266. told them

  267. look you don't need

  268. to do that

  269. this stuff's only

  270. for today

  271. unless the next day

  272. is going to be a Sabbath

  273. in which case

  274. it's going to be

  275. for two days

  276. but some of them

  277. didn't listen

  278. and they didn't trust God

  279. they didn't trust

  280. that God would give them

  281. each day

  282. their daily bread

  283. and so they hoarded

  284. it all up

  285. and what happened

  286. in day two

  287. the stuff was full

  288. of maggots

  289. it was absolutely rotten

  290. and God was challenging

  291. God's people

  292. way back then

  293. in the book of Exodus

  294. that what he wanted

  295. was a people

  296. who would look to God

  297. in continual dependence

  298. yesterday the manna came

  299. they'd have to wake up

  300. and rely on God

  301. providing them again

  302. for manna

  303. and they'd have to

  304. wake up the next day

  305. with nothing

  306. but absolutely relying

  307. on God providing them

  308. again with manna

  309. and they'd wake up

  310. the next day

  311. again utterly relying

  312. on God providing them

  313. with that manna

  314. Lamentations chapter 3

    Lamentations 3 chapter mention

  315. says this

  316. because of the Lord's

  317. great love

  318. we are not consumed

  319. for his compassions

  320. never fail

  321. they are new

  322. every morning

  323. great is your faithfulness

  324. I say to myself

  325. the Lord is my portion

  326. therefore I will wait

  327. for him

  328. I want to encourage us

  329. that for some of us

  330. we might feel

  331. that our trust

  332. our confidence

  333. in God

  334. is being shaken

  335. we've already heard

  336. and thought

  337. and prayed

  338. for members

  339. of our church

  340. who this week

  341. are wrestling

  342. and struggling

  343. with serious health issues

  344. and others experiencing

  345. loss

  346. and others with

  347. problems and issues

  348. that many of us

  349. will not even be aware of

  350. we come to God

  351. this morning

  352. who assures us

  353. that his compassion

  354. never fails

  355. and that his love

  356. is new

  357. every morning

  358. and who invites us

  359. to live a life

  360. of childlike dependence

  361. and of continual dependence

  362. the God who will provide

  363. for us anew

  364. on Monday

  365. and on Tuesday

  366. and on Wednesday

  367. and every day

  368. ahead

  369. and who invites us

  370. to simply

  371. trust him

  372. but let's not miss

  373. the final two words

  374. that I really want

  375. to focus on

  376. you've noticed them

  377. I'm sure

  378. give us

  379. this day

  380. our daily bread

  381. that prayer

  382. could so easily be

  383. give me

  384. this day

  385. my daily bread

  386. but it's not

  387. a prayer

  388. of individual

  389. dependence

  390. on God

  391. it's a prayer

  392. that speaks

  393. of collective

  394. dependence

  395. dependence

  396. if you're taking notes

  397. we need to come together

  398. and lift up our hearts

  399. and voices together

  400. saying God collectively

  401. we need you

  402. in so many ways

  403. the Bible speaks

  404. of us being

  405. a body

  406. that isn't

  407. self-sufficient

  408. but that is

  409. beautifully

  410. interconnected

  411. so that every part

  412. might support

  413. the other part

  414. in meeting

  415. the needs

  416. of the other

  417. and very simply

  418. I've been thinking

  419. of it

  420. that some of you

  421. might be praying

  422. for a particular

  423. need

  424. and it's another

  425. part of the body

  426. that God is equipping

  427. to provide

  428. for that need

  429. folks

  430. some of us

  431. are the answers

  432. to the prayers

  433. of some of the others

  434. who are sitting here

  435. in this room today

  436. that's a beautiful way

  437. in which God makes

  438. his church work

  439. and so we need

  440. to be praying

  441. for one another

  442. we need to be looking

  443. out for one another

  444. we need to be willing

  445. to share with each other

  446. where we are at

  447. and what our needs are

  448. because God may have

  449. some of the answers

  450. to those needs

  451. and the people

  452. that are sitting

  453. right next to you

  454. or behind you

  455. or you'll pass

  456. today so please

  457. let's not think

  458. that God's encouraging

  459. us to pray

  460. individualistic prayers

  461. only about our needs

  462. he's not

  463. and time and again

  464. throughout the Lord's prayer

  465. there is a sense

  466. of our collective

  467. worship towards God

  468. our collective need

  469. for forgiveness

  470. and our collective

  471. need for daily bread

  472. let's look around us

  473. to what extent

  474. might we be the answers

  475. to some of the prayers

  476. that others are praying

  477. but as we draw

  478. towards a close

  479. I want us to think

  480. for just a moment

  481. or two

  482. about what the

  483. consequences

  484. for our lives

  485. might be

  486. if we are really

  487. to be people

  488. who are marked

  489. by an increased

  490. sense

  491. of childlike

  492. dependence

  493. on our God

  494. of continual

  495. dependence

  496. and of collective

  497. dependence

  498. well what are

  499. the consequences

  500. if we as individuals

  501. have this sense

  502. of being utterly

  503. dependent on God

  504. for everything

  505. I suppose

  506. the one word

  507. that has been

  508. in my mind

  509. as I've reflected

  510. on that

  511. is the word

  512. gratitude

  513. if we

  514. do not seek

  515. to go about life

  516. absolutely

  517. self-sufficient

  518. but if we

  519. recognise

  520. that our

  521. every breath

  522. and our

  523. every need

  524. is utterly

  525. in God's

  526. hands

  527. to provide

  528. and we

  529. are not

  530. sufficient

  531. for anything

  532. and we

  533. then discover

  534. that God

  535. provides for us

  536. in so many

  537. ways

  538. surely the

  539. response

  540. ought to be

  541. one

  542. of

  543. outpouring

  544. gratitude

  545. to God

  546. I was reading

  547. a book

  548. this week

  549. called

  550. Ruthless

  551. Trust

  552. and the

  553. author

  554. speaks

  555. of spending

  556. some time

  557. with a group

  558. of older

  559. black women

  560. in the deep

  561. south of America

  562. down in New

  563. Orleans

  564. and his

  565. comment

  566. was that

  567. the one

  568. phrase

  569. that he

  570. heard these

  571. women say

  572. time and

  573. time again

  574. day after

  575. day was

  576. this

  577. thank you

  578. Jesus

  579. thank you

  580. Jesus

  581. thank you

  582. Jesus

  583. what are

  584. our levels

  585. of gratitude

  586. folks

  587. to Jesus

  588. for all

  589. that he

  590. is doing

  591. for us

  592. and in

  593. our lives

  594. I wonder

  595. if we're

  596. marked more

  597. by a sense

  598. of grumbling

  599. than we

  600. are by a

  601. sense of

  602. gratitude

  603. and I

  604. look into

  605. my own

  606. heart and

  607. life with

  608. that challenge

  609. before I

  610. look out

  611. and present

  612. it to

  613. any

  614. others

  615. there was

  616. also a

  617. story that

  618. I read

  619. of a

  620. woman who

  621. was

  622. desperately

  623. ill in

  624. hospital

  625. and

  626. gradually

  627. her

  628. physical

  629. functions

  630. were becoming

  631. increasingly

  632. impaired

  633. but she

  634. was someone

  635. who was

  636. looking

  637. to

  638. Jesus

  639. and a

  640. young man

  641. went in

  642. to visit

  643. her in

  644. the hospital

  645. and she

  646. said to

  647. him I'm

  648. just so

  649. grateful to

  650. Jesus

  651. for the

  652. fact that

  653. I still

  654. have the

  655. power to

  656. move my

  657. neck and

  658. my head

  659. even though

  660. there was

  661. no power

  662. to move

  663. any other

  664. part of

  665. her body

  666. and he

  667. said that's

  668. wonderful

  669. and he

  670. visited her

  671. a few weeks

  672. later and

  673. the power

  674. to move

  675. her head

  676. and neck

  677. had gone

  678. and she

  679. said I'm

  680. just so

  681. thankful to

  682. Jesus

  683. that I

  684. still have

  685. the power

  686. to see

  687. and hear

  688. and he

  689. said to her

  690. in the course

  691. of that

  692. visit he

  693. said that's

  694. wonderful he

  695. said but

  696. what will

  697. happen when

  698. you can no

  699. longer see

  700. and hear

  701. she said I'll

  702. just be so

  703. thankful to

  704. Jesus that

  705. you still come

  706. and visit

  707. me and I

  708. was touched

  709. by that

  710. simple

  711. example

  712. of gratitude

  713. and I

  714. wonder if

  715. some of us

  716. are wasting

  717. our time

  718. and our

  719. energy

  720. grumbling

  721. rather than

  722. being grateful

  723. I wonder if

  724. some of us

  725. need to

  726. recapture a

  727. sense of

  728. childlike

  729. dependence on

  730. God

  731. for everything

  732. and if in

  733. doing so

  734. we might find

  735. ourselves

  736. increasingly

  737. grateful

  738. for all

  739. the ways

  740. in which

  741. he provides

  742. our daily

  743. bread

  744. but as I

  745. close I

  746. want to

  747. recognize

  748. that for

  749. some of us

  750. we may be

  751. struggling a

  752. bit with

  753. the fact

  754. that we

  755. feel we

  756. have been

  757. praying for

  758. things and

  759. we've not yet

  760. seen the

  761. answer

  762. we have been

  763. praying for

  764. daily bread

  765. we've been

  766. praying for

  767. the job

  768. we've been

  769. praying for

  770. the better

  771. health

  772. we've been

  773. praying for

  774. the renewed

  775. energy

  776. and we feel

  777. it's just

  778. not happening

  779. and there we

  780. see our

  781. childlike

  782. dependence

  783. being tested

  784. because we're

  785. asking and it

  786. doesn't seem to

  787. be happening

  788. and maybe we

  789. can learn from

  790. the children as

  791. they were

  792. speaking about

  793. waiting

  794. or maybe we

  795. can learn from

  796. people like

  797. Joni Erex and

  798. Tada who

  799. writes this

  800. when life is

  801. rosy we may

  802. slide by with

  803. knowing about

  804. Jesus

  805. with imitating

  806. him and

  807. quoting him

  808. and speaking

  809. of him

  810. but only in

  811. suffering do

  812. we know

  813. Jesus

  814. we learn

  815. things about

  816. God in

  817. suffering that

  818. we cannot

  819. learn any

  820. other way

  821. now I

  822. can't do

  823. justice to

  824. that topic

  825. in the time

  826. that we've

  827. got

  828. it's something

  829. that we can

  830. maybe discuss

  831. with each

  832. other why is

  833. it that

  834. sometimes it

  835. seems that our

  836. prayers to

  837. our good

  838. father do

  839. not receive

  840. the answer

  841. that we expect

  842. or the answer

  843. that we want

  844. but as we

  845. think of our

  846. encouragement

  847. today to be

  848. people who

  849. will simply

  850. trust and

  851. depend on

  852. God

  853. let's finish

  854. with this

  855. one verse

  856. from God's

  857. word

  858. 1st John

    John 4:16

  859. chapter 4

  860. verse 16

  861. says this

  862. we know

  863. and rely

  864. on the

  865. love

  866. God has

  867. for us

  868. maybe that's

  869. a verse for

  870. some of you

  871. this week

  872. to take into

  873. whatever situation

  874. you are

  875. facing

  876. God encourages

  877. all of us

  878. to be people

  879. of childlike

  880. continual

  881. and collective

  882. dependence on

  883. him

  884. who can say

  885. no matter

  886. the circumstances

  887. or no matter

  888. the challenges

  889. whether we feel

  890. that the larders

  891. are full

  892. or are empty

  893. we know

  894. and rely

  895. on

  896. the love

  897. God has

  898. for us

  899. let's pause

  900. reflect on this

  901. and pray together

  902. thank you

  903. Jesus

  904. thank you

  905. Jesus

  906. for all

  907. the ways

  908. in which

  909. you are

  910. providing

  911. for us

  912. for our

  913. physical

  914. needs

  915. thank you

  916. that we

  917. can bring

  918. them to

  919. you

  920. thank you

  921. there's

  922. nothing

  923. too small

  924. to bring

  925. to you

  926. for our

  927. spiritual

  928. needs

  929. thank you

  930. Jesus

  931. for the way

  932. in which

  933. you have

  934. provided

  935. life

  936. and salvation

  937. through your

  938. own sacrifice

  939. on the cross

  940. for us

  941. thank you

  942. Jesus

  943. may we be

  944. people

  945. may we be

  946. a church

  947. that relies

  948. on

  949. that depends

  950. on

  951. and that

  952. looks to

  953. you

  954. for all

  955. in this

  956. life

  957. Amen

  958. you

  959. you

  960. you

  961. you

  962. you

  963. you

  964. you

  965. you

  966. you

  967. you
