  1. Thank you very much, Paul.

  2. As it has already been said, my name is Alistair.

  3. I have the privilege of being on staff here and it is great to see you all this morning.

  4. Now, as Paul read that passage, you were probably thinking,

  5. wow, that's a lovely topic to think about this morning.

  6. But I would encourage you and say that it is a lovely topic for us to think about this morning.

  7. But before we do that, let's pray together. Let's pray.

  8. Amen.

  9. Loving God and Heavenly Father, we come before you this morning acknowledging that we are weak human beings.

  10. But we come before you the glorious, magnificent God.

  11. And we ask that you teach us from your word.

  12. Holy Spirit, we ask that you would transform our hearts.

  13. And Jesus, we pray that we would leave here glorifying you in all we do and say.

  14. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  15. We all love a good, happy ending, don't we?

  16. When you come to the end of a good book or a movie,

  17. and you just love it when you know that everything turned out okay.

  18. We know how much we like happy endings because if a book or a movie doesn't end the way we want it to,

  19. or if it ends on a cliffhanger, we feel disappointed.

  20. Maybe feel a bit short-changed.

  21. We might even be looking for the return policy.

  22. We love a good, happy ending.

  23. But how would it change the way we read a book or watch a movie if we already knew the end?

  24. What if you opened the first page or watched the first movie of, for example, Lord of the Rings?

  25. Now, spoiler alert if you haven't watched Lord of the Rings.

  26. If you opened that first page or watched that first movie and you knew that in the end, after three books and three movies,

  27. Frodo was going to drop the ring into a volcano and end all destruction,

  28. you'd probably read it a bit differently, wouldn't you?

  29. So if Frodo got into a battle or in a dangerous situation and he was fearing for his life,

  30. you'd have the thought in the back of your mind, well, he's going to be all right in the end.

  31. It doesn't matter.

  32. I don't have to worry too much.

  33. It wouldn't have the same effect.

  34. Knowing the end changes the way you read the book.

  35. If we were to know the end of every story or scenario in this world today, would it change the way we live?

  36. If you were to know the end of your own story, would it change the way you live?

  37. As we've been traveling through the book of Joel on Sunday mornings,

  38. we've been seeing the story of the Old Testament people of God.

  39. They'd rebelled against God and lived in sin.

  40. And God sent a locust plague in Joel chapter 1 to bring them back to himself.

    Joel 1 chapter mention

  41. And the big message that God is speaking out to his people is,

  42. return to me.

  43. God is saying, come back into a faithful covenant relationship with me

  44. and I will bless you and I will protect you.

  45. Do not continue in your sin, but return to me and repent.

  46. That is what God is saying.

  47. And this morning in Joel chapter 3, we get an insight into the end of the story.

    Joel 3 chapter mention

  48. And the question that I want us to think about this morning is,

  49. are you living in light of the end?

  50. This morning we get to flick to the very last page of the book that we call Life on Earth

  51. and see what that will be like.

  52. Now remember how Joel has been pointing through this whole little book

  53. to the future day of the Lord.

  54. The day when God will right all wrongs.

  55. When God will sit and judge the world.

  56. And in Joel chapter 3, we're told what the end of this world will look like.

    Joel 3 chapter mention

  57. And it's all in the context of a valley.

  58. In verse 14,

  59. the end is described,

  60. the final day of the Lord is described as a valley of decision.

  61. And the decision on that final day is made by God.

  62. And it will determine whether God is your refuge

  63. or whether God is your judge.

  64. The language that this passage uses points

  65. to the idea that God is a judge who sits on a throne

  66. and the whole world is in the dock on trial.

  67. And the verdict will come from this judge.

  68. God decides the fate of this world based on their actions

  69. and on their response to him.

  70. He is the one who presides over this valley of decision.

  71. And this morning we see what God says to the nations

  72. and what God says to his people on that final day.

  73. So the first thing,

  74. what God says to the nations,

  75. verses 1 to 16a,

  76. what God says to the nations.

  77. In verse 1,

  78. you can see that God is speaking about a future day

  79. when Judah and Jerusalem will be restored.

  80. This is the future event known in the book of Joel

  81. as the day of the Lord.

  82. This event has not yet happened.

  83. It is still to come.

  84. And on that day,

  85. God will gather all the nations

  86. in the valley of Jehoshaphat,

  87. which means the valley of God's judgment.

  88. All the nations will stand before God

  89. as he sits on his throne and he will judge.

  90. God will deliver his verdict on the nations.

  91. And the announcement of a trial where God will judge

  92. leads to a list of charges that have been committed.

  93. Verses 2 and 3,

  94. we see what the nations are being judged for.

  95. They're being judged for how they treated God's people.

  96. The evidence is brought before the judge.

  97. These nations scattered God's people.

  98. They divided up God's promised land

  99. and traded them as if they were household ornaments.

  100. The crimes that the nations are on trial for

  101. have been committed against God's people

  102. and therefore they have been committed against God himself.

  103. And in the end of verse 3,

  104. do you see how God draws attention

  105. to how the nations have treated children?

  106. These little ones who are a picture of innocence,

  107. the weakest of God's people,

  108. the most defenseless of this nation,

  109. are being traded for cheap pleasures.

  110. Little boys are traded for the price of a prostitute.

  111. Little girls are being traded for the price of a glass of wine.

  112. The nations are putting their own pleasure

  113. above the care and needs of children.

  114. And God uses this as an example of their sin.

  115. Their complete apathy against God.

  116. But why does this matter?

  117. Why does it matter that the nations have done this?

  118. This was common practice in that day

  119. amongst enemy nations.

  120. So why should the people of God be treated any differently?

  121. Well the key is in verses 2 and 3,

  122. God says the word my five times.

  123. These are not just any people God says,

  124. but they are my inheritance,

  125. my people Israel,

  126. my people,

  127. my land,

  128. my people.

  129. What the nations have done against Israel,

  130. they have done against God himself.

  131. The sins of the nations are how they treated

  132. and dealt with God's people

  133. because they bear his name.

  134. They are his representatives on earth.

  135. And what the nations have done against them,

  136. they've done against God.

  137. Now we get this idea,

  138. don't we?

  139. Historically,

  140. this has been true for years and years,

  141. even in medieval Britain.

  142. If you were to attack a soldier

  143. or a god of the king,

  144. it would be seen as a direct attack

  145. on the king himself.

  146. And we see this in the New Testament.

  147. As Saul on the road to Damascus,

  148. Jesus appears to him in Acts chapter 9.

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  149. You can look that up later.

  150. Jesus appears to Saul

  151. and what does he say?

  152. Saul, Saul,

  153. why are you persecuting my church?

  154. No.

  155. He says,

  156. Saul, Saul,

  157. why are you persecuting me?

  158. That's the same idea here.

  159. The identity of the church

  160. is bound up with its head,

  161. Jesus Christ.

  162. And Israel's identity

  163. is bound up with God.

  164. The people of Israel

  165. bear the name of God

  166. and the attacks on them

  167. are a result of the nation's hatred of God.

  168. Their actions reveal

  169. their sinful hearts.

  170. It is all an outward example

  171. of their attitude towards God.

  172. And in verse 4,

  173. God says that he will repay them

  174. according to their deeds.

  175. Now some have said

  176. that God's judgment

  177. and justice is harsh

  178. or unjustified.

  179. But looking at the charges

  180. that he brings against the nations,

  181. looking at their actions

  182. and the punishment

  183. that God deems fit,

  184. I don't think that anyone

  185. can say God's judgment is harsh.

  186. Because God's judgment

  187. is simply him

  188. returning on their own heads

  189. what they have done to him.

  190. He is giving them over

  191. to their sin.

  192. The nations that are mentioned

  193. in this passage,

  194. I think,

  195. are representatives

  196. of all the enemies of God.

  197. And they will be brought

  198. before the Lord

  199. on that final day

  200. and they will be judged.

  201. The nations

  202. are called to war,

  203. called to gather

  204. their armies,

  205. called to turn

  206. their farming tools

  207. into weapons

  208. and fight.

  209. Now the nations,

  210. as they hear this message,

  211. they're probably thinking

  212. that they're going to go

  213. and fight against

  214. the Lord himself.

  215. Have a good old army

  216. against army.

  217. But they're being called

  218. to come to this valley

  219. and to listen.

  220. Listen to the verdict

  221. that will be delivered

  222. from the throne

  223. as God sits

  224. and delivers

  225. his verdict

  226. on the valley

  227. of Jehoshaphat,

  228. the valley

  229. of God's judgment.

  230. And verse 14,

  231. multitudes,

  232. multitudes have gathered

  233. in the valley

  234. of decision,

  235. but the decision

  236. in question

  237. is not theirs

  238. to make.

  239. It is God

  240. who will make

  241. the decision

  242. concerning their future.

  243. These multitudes

  244. have not gathered

  245. to make a decision,

  246. but they've gathered

  247. to hear one.

  248. And in verse 15

  249. to 16,

  250. you can see

  251. the universality

  252. of this judgment.

  253. It will not go

  254. unnoticed.

  255. Everybody will know

  256. what is happening.

  257. The sun and moon

  258. will be darkened

  259. as God's verdict

  260. rings out across

  261. the valley

  262. of decision.

  263. The Lord will roar

  264. from Zion

  265. and thunder

  266. from Jerusalem.

  267. The earth

  268. will tremble

  269. as the voice

  270. of the Lord

  271. declares

  272. his destruction

  273. on the nations

  274. for their deeds

  275. against his people.

  276. Sabina,

  277. my wife,

  278. and I

  279. just spent

  280. four days

  281. in the mountains

  282. hiking in Austria.

  283. And every day

  284. there was a thunderstorm

  285. and we were unlucky

  286. and one day

  287. we got caught

  288. on the mountainside

  289. in this huge thunderstorm.

  290. storm.

  291. And as we walked

  292. in the rain

  293. you could hear

  294. every single

  295. footstep you made.

  296. You could hear

  297. all the birds

  298. in the trees

  299. trying to find

  300. that one dry spot

  301. that was left.

  302. Every living thing

  303. on the mountainside

  304. was looking

  305. for refuge

  306. from this storm.

  307. It was loud

  308. but there was

  309. only one

  310. thing that could

  311. cover all of that

  312. noise

  313. and that was

  314. the thunder.

  315. As soon as you

  316. heard the thunder

  317. everything else

  318. was drowned out.

  319. And as we

  320. walked together

  321. we were saying

  322. how this thunder

  323. makes us think

  324. about the greatness

  325. of God

  326. and his might.

  327. Hearing that

  328. made us praise

  329. God.

  330. And that's just

  331. normal thunder.

  332. But I think

  333. the poetic language

  334. that Joel

  335. is using here

  336. is pointing us

  337. to see that thunder

  338. gets your attention.

  339. And it's

  340. God's thunder

  341. so it's not

  342. just going to

  343. be a little

  344. crackling in the sky.

  345. This is a thunder

  346. which will shake

  347. the very foundation

  348. of the earth.

  349. And hearing

  350. such a thunder

  351. will either

  352. make you fear

  353. God

  354. or it will

  355. comfort you

  356. because you know

  357. that he is

  358. your heavenly father.

  359. The day of the

  360. Lord has not

  361. happened yet.

  362. It is a future

  363. event for us

  364. today.

  365. And so think

  366. back to that

  367. question we

  368. started with.

  369. Are you living

  370. in light

  371. of the end?

  372. The end

  373. of the story

  374. for the nations

  375. for the enemies

  376. of God

  377. is that they

  378. will be judged.

  379. God will

  380. sit on his

  381. throne

  382. and deliver

  383. his verdict

  384. of guilty.

  385. And he will

  386. punish them

  387. in a just

  388. and right way.

  389. This has a

  390. significant meaning

  391. for you this

  392. morning if you

  393. are here and

  394. you are not

  395. a Christian.

  396. God will

  397. gather the whole

  398. world before

  399. his throne

  400. and his

  401. verdict will

  402. be given

  403. and punishment

  404. will come on

  405. those who

  406. have rejected

  407. God.

  408. Are you

  409. living in

  410. light of that

  411. end?

  412. Take time

  413. today to

  414. think about

  415. what God's

  416. verdict will

  417. be over your

  418. life as you

  419. stand today.

  420. Will you take

  421. time to consider

  422. how you

  423. stand before

  424. God?

  425. How if you

  426. are not

  427. you are

  428. rejecting

  429. God?

  430. Think about

  431. it.

  432. Every person

  433. naturally

  434. stands guilty

  435. before God.

  436. Each of us

  437. naturally

  438. rejects God.

  439. We want to

  440. live lives

  441. our own way

  442. according to

  443. what we see

  444. fit.

  445. But that life

  446. will lead us

  447. to rejecting

  448. God and

  449. being given

  450. the verdict of

  451. guilty on

  452. that final

  453. day.

  454. And for

  455. Christians this

  456. morning,

  457. God through

  458. the prophet

  459. Joel is

  460. calling Israel

  461. to proclaim

  462. to the

  463. nations that

  464. this is the

  465. future that

  466. awaits them.

  467. Do we do

  468. that?

  469. Do we

  470. proclaim to

  471. the world

  472. that this is

  473. the end

  474. that is

  475. coming?

  476. Do we

  477. warn them

  478. that one

  479. day God

  480. will make

  481. a decision

  482. about their

  483. lives?

  484. this is

  485. part of

  486. the message

  487. that we've

  488. been given

  489. to proclaim

  490. to the

  491. world.

  492. This is

  493. the message

  494. that they

  495. need to

  496. hear because

  497. God will

  498. decide and

  499. he can either

  500. deliver punishment

  501. or he can

  502. be a refuge.

  503. In this

  504. short book of

  505. Joel the

  506. message that

  507. God has

  508. been crying

  509. out to his

  510. people is

  511. return to

  512. me, repent

  513. and I'll

  514. take you

  515. back.

  516. The message

  517. that Jesus

  518. preached in

  519. the New

  520. Testament is

  521. repent and

  522. believe because

  523. the kingdom

  524. of God is

  525. at hand.

  526. That is the

  527. message we

  528. have to

  529. proclaim to

  530. the world.

  531. Are we

  532. living in

  533. light of

  534. the end?

  535. Are we

  536. proclaiming that

  537. there is an

  538. end and it

  539. is coming?

  540. We don't

  541. know when

  542. but it

  543. is coming.

  544. But there

  545. is still time

  546. to repent

  547. and turn to

  548. God even

  549. now.

  550. the second

  551. thing that

  552. this passage

  553. says is

  554. what God

  555. says to

  556. his people

  557. verses 16b

  558. to verse 21

  559. what God

  560. says to

  561. his people.

  562. Now the

  563. Lord will be

  564. a refuge for

  565. his people,

  566. a stronghold

  567. for his people

  568. Israel.

  569. That is an

  570. amazing truth.

  571. In their day

  572. of calamity,

  573. in their times

  574. of suffering,

  575. in their

  576. needs,

  577. when the

  578. world is

  579. shaking and

  580. the enemies

  581. seem to be

  582. prevailing

  583. against them,

  584. God calls

  585. them to

  586. look to

  587. the end

  588. and see

  589. that he

  590. will be

  591. their ultimate

  592. refuge.

  593. He will be

  594. their shelter.

  595. He will

  596. guard them

  597. and protect

  598. them from

  599. judgment.

  600. On that

  601. final day

  602. there will

  603. be only one

  604. place to

  605. hide.

  606. There will

  607. be only one

  608. place of

  609. refuge and

  610. that is in

  611. the Lord

  612. God himself.

  613. And the

  614. promise that

  615. once God's

  616. decision is

  617. made and

  618. the nations

  619. are being

  620. judged,

  621. the promise

  622. to the

  623. people of

  624. God is

  625. that they

  626. will know

  627. him and

  628. that they

  629. will dwell

  630. with him

  631. in Zion.

  632. You see

  633. that in

  634. the end

  635. of verse

  636. 17.

  637. Now the

  638. language of

  639. Zion is

  640. referring to

  641. what we

  642. call the

  643. new creation,

  644. the time

  645. where God

  646. will dwell

  647. with his

  648. people forever.

  649. There will

  650. be no more

  651. sin,

  652. no more

  653. pain,

  654. no more

  655. suffering,

  656. no more

  657. enemies of

  658. God.

  659. God and

  660. his people

  661. will dwell

  662. in perfect

  663. harmony.

  664. For all

  665. those who

  666. put their

  667. trust in

  668. God,

  669. he will be

  670. your final

  671. refuge.

  672. Doesn't that

  673. give you

  674. courage as

  675. you suffer

  676. in this

  677. world which

  678. hates God?

  679. Imagine the

  680. relief that

  681. the people of

  682. Israel must

  683. feel.

  684. Maybe they

  685. still remember

  686. the hunger

  687. pains from

  688. the locust

  689. plague in

  690. Joel chapter

    Joel 1 chapter mention

  691. 1.

  692. They still

  693. remember the

  694. destruction so

  695. vividly.

  696. But now

  697. the God

  698. who loves

  699. them,

  700. who called

  701. them out,

  702. has promised

  703. them complete

  704. restoration and

  705. peace.

  706. God dwells

  707. with his

  708. people and

  709. what does the

  710. end of verse

  711. 17 say?

  712. Jerusalem will

  713. be holy.

  714. God

  715. will be

  716. made holy.

  717. God

  718. recreates

  719. this broken

  720. and corrupt

  721. world and

  722. makes it

  723. completely new.

  724. God's

  725. people will

  726. also be

  727. transformed and

  728. we will be

  729. made holy.

  730. God isn't

  731. just saying I'm

  732. going to give

  733. you a nice

  734. place for my

  735. people to hang

  736. out for the

  737. rest of their

  738. lives.

  739. I'm not just

  740. going to set

  741. them up for

  742. life but God

  743. is saying that

  744. humanity's ultimate

  745. problem of sin

  746. and separation

  747. from God will

  748. be eradicated.

  749. God's people

  750. will be holy

  751. and perfect.

  752. This holiness

  753. will never be

  754. achieved on this

  755. side of Jesus'

  756. return.

  757. But once he

  758. returns and

  759. gathers his

  760. people to

  761. himself, they

  762. will dwell with

  763. God.

  764. It's an amazing

  765. truth.

  766. The language

  767. points us to

  768. Revelation chapter

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  769. 21 where I'll

  770. read a few

  771. verses.

  772. You can look it

  773. up later on.

  774. Revelation 21

  775. says this,

  776. Then I saw a

  777. new heaven and

  778. a new earth.

  779. For the first

  780. heaven and the

  781. first earth had

  782. passed away.

  783. There was no

  784. longer any sea.

  785. I saw a holy

  786. city, a new

  787. Jerusalem, coming

  788. down out of

  789. heaven from God,

  790. prepared as a

  791. bride beautifully

  792. dressed for her

  793. husband.

  794. And I heard a

  795. loud voice from

  796. the throne saying,

  797. Look, God's

  798. dwelling place is

  799. now among the

  800. people and he

  801. will dwell with

  802. them.

  803. They will be his

  804. people and God

  805. himself will be

  806. with them and be

  807. their God.

  808. He will wipe away

  809. every tear from

  810. their eyes.

  811. There will be no

  812. more death or

  813. mourning or crying

  814. or pain for the

  815. old order of

  816. things had passed

  817. away.

  818. Breathtaking.

  819. God is the one who

  820. will make this new

  821. place holy.

  822. How?

  823. Because he himself

  824. will dwell there.

  825. A holy people will

  826. live holy lives,

  827. living in a holy

  828. place because it is

  829. the very dwelling

  830. place of the most

  831. holy God.

  832. Nothing unclean

  833. will enter this new

  834. Jerusalem or Zion.

  835. Jerusalem.

  836. This place is not

  837. for anything or

  838. anyone who has not

  839. been made holy by

  840. God, but only for

  841. those who have been

  842. made holy by

  843. believing in him.

  844. Only those who have

  845. accepted Jesus Christ

  846. and been forgiven

  847. through his sacrificial

  848. death on the cross

  849. will be able to dwell

  850. with God.

  851. The only way to

  852. heaven is through

  853. Jesus, the Son of

  854. God who died,

  855. meaning that undeserving

  856. sinners like you and

  857. like me, can be made

  858. right with God.

  859. And this holiness

  860. leads to satisfaction

  861. in verse 18.

  862. This new place in the

  863. presence of God is a

  864. picture of abundance.

  865. Nobody is lacking,

  866. but God will provide

  867. and you see that in the

  868. poetic language that's

  869. used.

  870. The mountains will drip

  871. new wine, the hills

  872. will flow with milk,

  873. the ravines will run

  874. with water.

  875. This is such a

  876. contrast to the

  877. devastation that was

  878. caused by the locust

  879. plague in Joel chapter

    Joel 1 chapter mention

  880. 1.

  881. God will restore all

  882. things and his

  883. blessings will be

  884. abundant.

  885. Now this isn't the

  886. kind of false

  887. satisfaction that our

  888. world offers and

  889. loves today.

  890. Today people find

  891. fleeting satisfaction

  892. in jobs, in

  893. houses, in

  894. relationships, in

  895. money, and the

  896. list goes on and

  897. on and on.

  898. But the minute those

  899. things are taken

  900. away, people feel

  901. empty.

  902. People feel lacking.

  903. But on that final

  904. day, God, people will

  905. be made right with

  906. God.

  907. There is no greater

  908. satisfaction than for

  909. your creator, the God

  910. who knows you, the God

  911. who loves you, the God

  912. who saves you, and who

  913. truly knows what you

  914. need.

  915. He will satisfy your

  916. very soul.

  917. That longing you feel

  918. when a loved one dies.

  919. That feeling of

  920. disappointment when

  921. someone lets you down.

  922. That anger as you

  923. work and work and work

  924. but your boss doesn't

  925. notice and doesn't

  926. reward.

  927. God will be

  928. gone.

  929. The satisfaction that

  930. this covenant-keeping

  931. God promises his

  932. people is completely

  933. out of this world.

  934. We can't even begin to

  935. imagine what it is like.

  936. But it will be

  937. glorious.

  938. And that is what the

  939. end looks like for God's

  940. people.

  941. And all of this

  942. abundance finds its

  943. root in God himself.

  944. All of this blessing, all

  945. of this holiness and

  946. satisfaction, all of this

  947. perfection and purity

  948. is rooted in

  949. God.

  950. The faithful,

  951. covenant-keeping God

  952. who is a refuge for

  953. his people.

  954. God will dwell with his

  955. people.

  956. They will be holy and

  957. they will be satisfied

  958. and they will be

  959. different.

  960. Verses 19 to 21.

  961. They describe the

  962. contrast between those

  963. who are the people of

  964. God and those who

  965. aren't.

  966. Egypt will be

  967. desolate.

  968. Edom, a desert

  969. place.

  970. There will be no

  971. life.

  972. They will be

  973. destroyed.

  974. These cities are

  975. mentioned as

  976. representatives of all

  977. the enemies of God

  978. and that is the end

  979. that awaits those who

  980. reject God.

  981. The enemies of

  982. God are contrasted

  983. with this picture of

  984. perfection that the

  985. people of God will

  986. enjoy.

  987. nations will be

  988. judged based on

  989. their dealings with

  990. the people of God

  991. and they will be

  992. destroyed and left

  993. empty but Judah,

  994. on the other hand,

  995. will be inhabited

  996. forever.

  997. Jerusalem,

  998. through all

  999. generations.

  1000. Again, this is

  1001. prophetic and poetic

  1002. language for the new

  1003. creation where God

  1004. will dwell with his

  1005. people.

  1006. This is not speaking

  1007. about the actual city

  1008. of Jerusalem but it

  1009. refers to the new

  1010. Jerusalem that we see

  1011. in Revelation chapter

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  1012. 21.

  1013. God's message to his

  1014. people is that he

  1015. will be their refuge.

  1016. An old hymn speaks

1017. about God as a refuge

  1018. with these words.

1019. Rock of ages cleft for

1020. me, let me hide myself

  1021. in thee.

1022. Let the water and the

  1023. blood from thy wounded

1024. side which flowed be of

  1025. sin the double cure.

1026. Save from wrath and make

  1027. me pure.

  1028. And the promise that

  1029. ends this book of

  1030. Joel is marvelous.

  1031. God dwells in Zion.

1032. That is what the end

  1033. looks like for the

  1034. people of God.

1035. And as we draw to a

  1036. close this morning,

  1037. let me ask again,

1038. are you living in light

  1039. of the end?

  1040. Maybe you've never

  1041. heard this before.

1042. But this is the end

  1043. that the Bible says

  1044. is coming.

1045. This is the end that

  1046. Jesus said was coming

1047. and this is the end

1048. that deep down we all

  1049. long for.

1050. We want justice to be

  1051. given.

  1052. We want the wrong

  1053. things of this world

  1054. to be made right.

1055. But in that cry for

  1056. justice,

  1057. we cannot forget

  1058. where we stand.

  1059. The end that Joel

  1060. foretells is the end

1061. that is still to come.

  1062. God will either be

  1063. your judge or your

  1064. refuge.

1065. Who will he be for

  1066. you on that day?

1067. Allow me to be direct

  1068. this morning.

  1069. Where do you stand

  1070. with God?

  1071. Where do you stand

  1072. with God?

  1073. There is always a

  1074. response to the

  1075. message of God.

  1076. There is either a

  1077. hunger to know more

  1078. or there is a

  1079. hatred and a

  1080. rejection of that

  1081. message.

  1082. And as we are

  1083. gathered here this

  1084. morning, are you

  1085. rejecting God or is

  1086. he your refuge?

  1087. This is not a

  1088. decision you should

  1089. take lightly.

1090. Nor is it a matter

  1091. that you should put

  1092. off for the future

  1093. me.

1094. There is no time to

  1095. lose.

1096. We do not know when

  1097. Jesus will come back.

  1098. But when he does,

  1099. God will sit and

  1100. judge the world.

  1101. There will be no

  1102. more time to

  1103. reconsider your

  1104. stance before God.

  1105. This morning, will

1106. you look to God for

  1107. your refuge?

  1108. Or will you continue

  1109. to reject?

  1110. Or maybe you are

1111. here and you are a

  1112. Christian.

  1113. Are you looking

  1114. forward and living in

  1115. light of that final

  1116. day?

  1117. See, these are not

  1118. just some pleasant

  1119. ideas that God spoke

1120. to his people to keep

  1121. them going, to spur

  1122. them on.

  1123. This is the reality

1124. that awaits you as a

  1125. child of God.

1126. This is the end that

  1127. is awaiting you.

  1128. The God who knows

  1129. you, who created you,

  1130. who loves you, who

  1131. saves you, will dwell

  1132. with you.

  1133. Isn't that glorious

  1134. news?

  1135. Isn't that news that

1136. we can all get excited

  1137. about?

  1138. Isn't that the reality

  1139. reality that we want

  1140. other people to join

1141. in with and be a part

  1142. of?

1143. Joel 3 sets out the

1144. end of the story of

  1145. this world, but the

  1146. beginning of the story

  1147. of eternity.

  1148. For Christians, that is

  1149. an eternity spent with

  1150. God.

  1151. For those who reject

1152. God, it is an eternity

  1153. of judgment.

  1154. judgment.

  1155. Do we think about

  1156. this as we sit

  1157. having dinner with

  1158. our friends?

  1159. If this is the

  1160. glorious future that

  1161. we look forward to,

  1162. what is holding us

  1163. back from declaring

  1164. it to the world?

  1165. If this is the

  1166. severity of judgment

  1167. that we know is

  1168. coming, what is

  1169. holding us back from

  1170. telling people and

  1171. warning them?

  1172. Now, I ask myself

  1173. these questions just

1174. as much as I ask

  1175. you because I am

  1176. just as nervous when

  1177. it comes to sharing

  1178. the gospel with

  1179. somebody.

  1180. But if we have

  1181. such good news to

  1182. share, we'd be

  1183. selfish to keep it

  1184. to ourselves.

  1185. And if we know

  1186. that this is the

  1187. severity of judgment

  1188. that is coming,

  1189. then we need to

  1190. warn people.

  1191. Penn Jillette, a

  1192. famous American

  1193. magician, comedian,

  1194. and outspoken

  1195. atheist, says that

  1196. he doesn't respect

  1197. people who do not

  1198. proselytize.

  1199. And I'll quote him.

  1200. He says this,

  1201. how much do you

  1202. have to hate someone

  1203. not to proselytize?

  1204. How much do you

  1205. have to hate someone

  1206. to believe that

  1207. everlasting life is

  1208. possible and not

  1209. tell them that?

  1210. I mean, if I believe

  1211. beyond the shadow of

  1212. a doubt that a

  1213. truck was coming at

  1214. you and you didn't

  1215. believe it, and that

  1216. truck was bearing in

1217. on you, there is a

  1218. certain point where

  1219. I just tackle you.

  1220. And this is more

  1221. important than that.

  1222. This is the future

  1223. that the Bible

  1224. teaches.

  1225. This is the future

  1226. that awaits all

  1227. people, and this is

  1228. the future that we

  1229. have to proclaim to

  1230. the world.

  1231. As a Christian this

  1232. morning, look at

  1233. that glorious promise

1234. at the end of verse

  1235. 21 and know that

  1236. that is your future.

1237. As a child of God,

  1238. you will live together

1239. with God in the new

  1240. Jerusalem, in the new

  1241. heavens and new earth.

  1242. All sin, gone.

  1243. All impurity, gone.

  1244. All pain, gone.

  1245. Your future is holy,

  1246. pure, everlasting,

  1247. satisfaction and peace

  1248. with God.

1249. These are the two ends

  1250. that await every single

  1251. human being in this

  1252. world.

  1253. world.

  1254. A valley of decision

1255. or a tower of refuge.

1256. Can you stand in a few

1257. moments as we sing this

1258. song and say and sing

  1259. these words knowing that

1260. they are true for you?

1261. It is well with my soul.

1262. Can you stand and sing my sin

1263. oh the bliss of this

  1264. glorious thought, my sin

1265. not in part but the whole

1266. is nailed to the cross

1267. and I bear it no more.

  1268. Praise the Lord.

  1269. Praise the Lord.

  1270. Oh my soul.

1271. If you cannot say that,

1272. take time today to think

  1273. about how you stand

  1274. before God.

  1275. Let's pray together.

1276. Just in the silence of your

1277. own hearts for a minute or so

1278. let's think about how we

  1279. stand before God.

1280. Think about how we are

1281. living in light of the end.

1282. Is God your refuge this

1283. morning or will you be

1284. standing in the valley of

  1285. decision?

1286. If you'd like to speak about

1287. anything that has been said

1288. this morning or sung or read

1289. feel free to grab anyone

  1290. who's been up front.

1291. I'll be standing at the door

  1292. as you leave.

1293. We'd love to pray for you

1294. and to speak with you.

1295. Heavenly Father we thank you

1296. so much that you tell the

1297. world who you are through

  1298. your word.

1299. Lord we thank you that you

1300. offer us the opportunity to

1301. find our refuge in you on

  1302. that final day.

1303. Lord we acknowledge the cost

1304. that that was for your son

  1305. Jesus Christ.

1306. And Lord with all our hearts

  1307. we thank you.

  1308. In his name.

  1309. Amen.
