  1. Thank you very much, Fiona and Van, for leading our worship so helpfully this morning.

  2. Two weeks ago, my wife Bridget and I were up on the Isle of Lewis

  3. visiting our daughter-in-law Kirstein's parents.

  4. And while we were there, we went along with them to Locke's Free Church.

  5. If you went to a free church in Edinburgh,

  6. you might well find that the music wasn't very different from what we have here.

  7. But up in Lewis, they still sing the Psalms exclusively with a presenter.

  8. And as I was thinking about this psalm we're looking at this morning,

  9. I thought it was a good reminder to me that the psalms were intended to be sung as originally written.

  10. Nothing wrong with reading the verses or studying them.

  11. We're going to be doing that later on.

  12. But originally, they were written to be sung.

  13. So for our scripture reading this morning, I thought we'd do something a little bit different.

  14. We're going to listen to someone singing Psalm 95.

  15. The words will come up on the screen as well.

  16. The words are very faithful to the text.

  17. If you want to follow them along, one or two verses repeated,

  18. but very faithful to the text.

  19. So it will tell us what Psalm 95 is about.

  20. And be a good reminder to us that we're looking at Israel's songbook

  21. at the way in which the people then used to praise God.

  22. So let's watch this now.

  23. And whether sung or spoken, that is God's word.

  24. And we pray that you'll bless it to us as we think about it this morning.

  25. While we were up in Lewis, we also went into Stornoway and spent a day there.

  26. And while we were walking around the streets, we came across a converted shop

  27. that had been changed into a church.

  28. It was called the New Wine Church.

  29. Now, I don't know much about the New Wine Church,

  30. but I would guess that their worship, their style of worship,

  31. is very different from the free church.

  32. And in the window, they had guitars.

  33. But again, a quote from the Psalms,

  34. I will sing a new song to the Lord on the ten-stringed lyre.

  35. And again, that was a reminder to me of the Psalms,

  36. of the variety that we have in them.

  37. There are times in the Psalms when we want to come exuberantly

  38. and with lively music as we sing praise to God and rejoice in him.

  39. And there are times also when we want, as would be normal in the free church,

  40. to be more reverent and reflective in our worship.

  41. And different people respond to different kinds of worship.

  42. But good for all of us to have that variety.

  43. And when we're in the Psalms, very often we find that even in one Psalm,

  44. there is that variety of worship.

  45. I don't know if you noticed, it went through Psalm 95.

  46. It is a classic example of it.

  47. It starts off as a really Psalm of praise, of excitement to God,

  48. or encouraging people to sing and to shout to him and to worship God.

  49. And then in the middle of verse 7, suddenly it changes completely.

  50. And it changes into a warning not to harden our hearts,

  51. not to lose the rest that God has promised to us.

  52. And you might wonder, well, why does the Psalm change so dramatically halfway through?

  53. Why does it start off with such joy in the Lord and then end with such a strong warning?

  54. Well, let me paint a little picture of what I think might be the background to this Psalm.

  55. The Israelites, during the course of the year, they had many festivals.

  56. Now, their festivals weren't great extravaganzas of music and of drama and dance and so on,

  57. like we'll be having in Edinburgh over the next month.

  58. Rather, the festivals were celebrations of what God had done for his people

  59. and coming to give him thanks and to offer sacrifices to him for them.

  60. And it might have been the festival here was the Feast of Tabernacles.

  61. Feast of Tabernacles was kind of a harvest Thanksgiving period,

  62. but also a time of remembering that God led the Israelites for 40 years through the wilderness

  63. and that he took them safe into the promised land.

  64. Indeed, in the Feast of Tabernacles, the people sometimes lived in little tents or booths

  65. as a reminder to themselves of what it had been like in the wilderness.

  66. So let's imagine it's the Feast of Tabernacles,

  67. and we've got the pilgrims who are coming to the feast.

  68. And they're really excited about it.

  69. This is one of the highlights of their year.

  70. And as they're walking through the streets, they're saying to people,

  71. come on, let's worship God together.

  72. Let's sing and shout for joy to the Lord and remember what a great God he is.

  73. And that is, I think, the first half of the psalm.

  74. Then they arrive at the temple and the priest is standing there.

  75. And he says, come in, but remember you're coming to worship the God who's our maker

  76. and who is our shepherd.

  77. And he's not just someone that we want to sing and shout praise to.

  78. Our God, our great God, is someone we need to bow down before

  79. and to recognize his greatness.

  80. And let's make sure as we come before God that we don't come with hard hearts,

  81. with wrong attitudes, that even though on the surface we appear to be praising God,

  82. actually inside, we're wrong.

  83. As your ancestors, speaking to Jews, as your ancestors going through the wilderness,

  84. they hardened their hearts for all God's goodness to them.

  85. They lost out on the blessing that God had planned for them because they didn't obey him.

  86. I think that might be an explanation of the two halves of the psalm.

  87. In the one half, you've got the call to worship and to praise God together.

  88. And then in the second half, you have the call to come reverently before God

  89. and to examine your hearts and then to worship him.

  90. So I'll just give a brief outline of what I think the two halves are made up of

  91. and then we'll go through them in a little bit more detail.

  92. So the first half is about acclaiming God's greatness.

  93. I'll divide that in two.

  94. The first two verses are about irrepressible praise.

  95. They're the ones that talk about shouting and singing and so on.

  96. And then verses three to five talk to us about God's incomparable power,

  97. that he is the God who is in control of everything on our earth.

  98. And the second half of the psalm, I've said, is about accepting God's grace.

  99. And then in verses six and seven, there's the call to sincere worship.

  100. And that's followed then by the solemn warning that I talked about.

  101. So we're going to go through the psalm under these headings

  102. and just see what God has to say to us through it.

  103. So first, irrepressible praise.

  104. So let's read more conventionally this time what the psalm says here.

  105. It says,

  106. Psalm 95 is one of a string of psalms through the Psalm 90s, which we're looking at the moment,

  107. where there is a great command to come and to praise God.

  108. There are psalms that celebrate God as our king, as the one who is in control of everything,

  109. as the one who deserves our praise.

  110. And many of them do talk about praising God with singing, with musical instruments, with real joy.

  111. Not holding back, not coming half-heartedly in worship, but rather as we come to God,

  112. really letting go and letting him understand and know how much we appreciate him,

  113. and letting everyone else, too, know about the greatness of our God.

  114. If this was, as I was imagining, people walking through the streets of Jerusalem singing,

  115. they were letting everyone else know how great God is.

  116. And it's good, isn't it, when we can come together, and in that sense, we can let go.

  117. We can come with real joy.

  118. Some of the songs we've been singing this morning, which tell us about God's goodness,

  119. and rejoice in all that he is, and all that he has done for us.

  120. And we should come with hearts that are full of thankfulness and full of joy,

  121. because we have such a great God.

  122. He's called, in this verse, the rock of our salvation.

  123. Now, when we think of God as the rock, we probably would immediately think of the rock

  124. as being something solid and something you can build on,

  125. like the story of the two builders Jesus told in the New Testament.

  126. The one who built on the rock, their house was secure.

  127. The one on the sand, it wasn't.

  128. Psalms also talk about being hidden in the rock.

  129. So the rock talks about security.

  130. But I think particularly in the context of this psalm,

  131. there's a second significance to the rock,

  132. because as we'll see a bit later on,

  133. one of the events that the psalmist is looking back to

  134. is when Moses struck the rock with his rod,

  135. and there was water came from it.

  136. And that water was vitally needed by the Israelites,

  137. who were really in danger of dying if they didn't get water.

  138. And it speaks of God's salvation,

  139. of him being able to save us from the worst things in life.

  140. Looking forward, it looks to the salvation that we have through Jesus.

  141. So we're looking to the one who is our rock.

  142. We're praising him.

  143. We're excited about him.

  144. And we want to give him all the glory.

  145. Good if we can come with that attitude.

  146. I know people going through difficult times might be difficult to do that.

  147. But if we're able to come and to praise God

  148. and to sing our worship to him with real joy.

  149. And why do we do that?

  150. Well, says the psalmist, it's because of his incomparable power.

  151. So verses 3 to 5.

  152. For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods.

  153. In his hands are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him.

  154. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.

  155. So in this part of the psalm, the psalmist is particularly concentrating on God as the all-powerful one.

  156. The one who is the creator, and the one who keeps things moving everywhere on the earth.

  157. He is, says the psalmist, the great God.

  158. And he says he's the great King above all gods.

  159. Now the psalmist is not thinking that the other gods that people around about the Israelites would worship

  160. were in any sense real, in that they existed.

  161. But they were real in the sense that people worshipped them and thought that they existed.

  162. And the psalmist is saying, our God is incomparable with these false gods that other nations worship.

  163. And it's possible as he goes through the list in verses 4 and 5,

  164. he's thinking particularly about some of the gods, with small g, of the nations round about Israel.

  165. So there was the god Baal or Baal.

  166. Now the thing about Baal was he was a god where everything had to be seen and visible.

  167. Remember when Elijah was up against the prophets of Baal in the book of 1 Kings,

  168. that it was on the mountaintop, on Mount Carmel,

  169. that they had this big sacrifice to see which God could answer with fire.

  170. And that was very much taking Baal on on his own territory.

  171. He was the god of the mountaintop.

  172. So when the psalmist says the mountain peaks belonged to him,

  173. may have been thinking about that false god of the nations round about Israel.

  174. The god where things had to be seen.

  175. And the idea was that you went up to the top of the mountain,

  176. and you acted something out, and Baal would see it, and he would bless you.

  177. Whether it was sacrifices you were making, or there were sexual orges,

  178. and all sorts of things, you were supposed to give messages to Baal.

  179. The idea was he saw them, and when he saw them, things happened.

  180. And we don't worship gods like that in that sense in our day.

  181. But for many people, it's perhaps not that different.

  182. It's wanting to be seen, and to be visible,

  183. and to look at the material things round about us.

  184. Because all these sacrifices to Baal and so on,

  185. they were really just to win his favor,

  186. so that he would bless the people, so they would have good crops,

  187. and that the nation would be prosperous.

  188. And certainly, we think of it in that kind of sense.

  189. A lot of people today, their big aim is that they,

  190. that people round about should be prosperous.

  191. The markets, getting the markets right,

  192. getting more money for myself, getting a better job, and so on.

  193. And that maybe is the modern equivalent of the worship of Baal.

  194. And the psalmist says to us,

  195. much more important than that is that we worship,

  196. that we praise God, that we get our priorities right.

  197. Second God was called Molech.

  198. Now, Molech was almost the opposite of Baal.

  199. Rather than being the god of everything being seen,

  200. he was the god of everything that was hidden.

  201. So it was all the kind of a coat stuff,

  202. and things that were hidden away that weren't on the surface.

  203. It was kind of almost a secret society type stuff.

  204. The Molech dwelt in the underworld,

  205. and he could have a very malevolent force on people.

  206. And again, don't have a direct equivalent perhaps today,

  207. but there's an awful lot of stuff today that's done in secret

  208. that people don't want others to find out about.

  209. I'm sure you've noticed over the last few months

  210. the amount of things that have come out that have been secret,

  211. the sexual improprieties of lots of celebrities in the past,

  212. and some shocking abuse that's been revealed.

  213. Or the kind of secret mining of data and using it in ways that it was never intended to be used,

  214. the Facebook thing and so on.

  215. Lots of these things that are kind of hidden away in secret,

  216. that aren't meant to be revealed,

  217. and yet which are very much against the way that people should be behaving.

  218. And perhaps that again is a lesson for us,

  219. that we need to be very careful that we are open,

  220. that we are transparent,

  221. that we've not got lots of things that are hidden away,

  222. that our life is open before God,

  223. and that our worship for him is true and is sincere.

  224. One more example,

  225. the god of the sea was called Timat.

  226. And he was a god who was characterized by great strength and force.

  227. The force of the sea as their waves crash against the land

  228. or against the boat, if you're out in it.

  229. And Timat represented the importance of power and of influence.

  230. And again, in our day, many people,

  231. the thing that they really want,

  232. the thing that's important to them,

  233. is to have power and to have influence

  234. and to be seen to be important.

  235. And again, we need to say,

  236. let's bow down, let's worship our great God.

  237. Beside him, we're insignificant.

  238. Any power we have,

  239. any power that gods of our day,

  240. not that we imagine they're gods in the sense they did in the past,

  241. but actually in reality, very much similar.

  242. Nothing that they have can compare to our God.

  243. And because he is so great,

  244. because he is so wonderful,

  245. then we should praise him

  246. and we should be letting other people know how good our God is.

  247. And particularly in the way the psalmist never could,

  248. to talk about how God sent his son into the world

  249. to be our saviour,

  250. how God came as one of us

  251. and lived our life

  252. and died our death on the cross at Calvary.

  253. And much of our singing this morning has been praising

  254. God and the Lord Jesus for that great sacrifice.

  255. So we need to be praising God.

  256. We need to be coming before him with joyful hearts.

  257. As I said, there's then a bit of a change in the psalm.

  258. And instead of looking at the importance of praising God

  259. with great joy and with singing and with shouting,

  260. the psalmist now says,

  261. actually, when you come to God,

  262. another appropriate way to come

  263. is with an attitude of worship

  264. and to bow down before him

  265. and just be awestruck by how great our God is

  266. and then to go away and to obey him.

  267. And that's what the second half of the psalm is about.

  268. I've imagined it's the priest saying that to the people.

  269. Might have been, might not.

  270. But it certainly is trying to get home to us.

  271. It's not all about being on the mountaintop

  272. and singing and being excited all the time.

  273. We need to come to our God with reverence

  274. and with respect and with real awe

  275. and to recognize that everything we are comes from him

  276. and that we owe him our allegiance.

  277. So verse six, he says,

  278. come, let us bow down in worship.

  279. Let us kneel before the Lord, our maker,

  280. for he is our God

  281. and we are the people of his pasture,

  282. the flock under his care.

  283. Now you notice the psalmist has moved here

  284. from the general to the specific.

  285. So in the early verses,

  286. he's talking generally about God,

  287. the God of creation,

  288. the God of the mountaintops

  289. and of the sea and so on.

  290. Now he's talking about our God.

  291. The God who is not just the all-powerful one,

  292. but the God who cares for you and who cares for me.

  293. And he says, as we come to God and reflect on that,

  294. the right way to come is bowing down

  295. and symbolically in thought at least,

  296. kneeling before the Lord.

  297. He is our maker.

  298. He is our God.

  299. And he is our shepherd.

  300. We're talking earlier to the children,

  301. but Psalm 23,

  302. there are a way looking at it just now.

  303. And there's a bit of an echo of that in verse seven here.

  304. We are the people of his pasture,

  305. the flock under his care.

  306. Shepherd's job is to look after the sheep.

  307. The sheep's job is to follow the shepherd

  308. shepherd and to trust him and to do as he tells them.

  309. Now in the olden days in the land of Israel,

  310. at the time the psalmist was writing,

  311. you wouldn't have a shepherd going out with a sheep dog

  312. and using the dog to round them up.

  313. Rather, the shepherd would do it all with his voice.

  314. He would call his sheep,

  315. his sheep would know his voice,

  316. and his sheep would respond.

  317. That's the picture the Lord Jesus picks up on

  318. in John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  319. when he talks about himself as the good shepherd.

  320. And so the psalmist now says,

  321. we have this God who's great,

  322. who's the master of the universe,

  323. who's in charge of everything.

  324. He's also our God,

  325. and he cares for us,

  326. and he loves us.

  327. But our responsibility then

  328. is to bow down and to worship

  329. and to obey him.

  330. The psalmist says,

  331. I know that very often people come before God

  332. or come into church or temple or whatever in those days,

  333. and that's not the way they are.

  334. And he says,

  335. remember what happened in the wilderness.

  336. So let's read the remaining verses of the chapter

  337. that are called A Solemn Warning.

  338. And this is God speaking here.

  339. Today, if you would only hear his voice,

  340. do not harden your hearts,

  341. as you did at Meribah,

  342. as you did at that day at Massah in the wilderness.

  343. Where your ancestors tested me,

  344. they tried me,

  345. though they had seen what I did.

  346. For 40 years,

  347. I was angry with that generation.

  348. I said,

  349. there are people whose hearts go astray,

  350. and they have not known my ways.

  351. So I declared on oath in my anger,

  352. they shall never enter my rest.

  353. The Sabbath is looking back,

  354. particularly at two instances

  355. that happened to the Israelites

  356. as they went through the wilderness.

  357. Remember,

  358. the Israelites,

  359. under Moses,

  360. eventually got free from Pharaoh

  361. and the Egyptians

  362. after the 10 plagues.

  363. And then there were 40 years

  364. wandering around the wilderness

  365. before they got to the promised land

  366. where they would eventually settle.

  367. Didn't need to be 40 years.

  368. There were 40 years

  369. because they were so disobedient

  370. and so mistrusting of God.

  371. And there were two instances in particular,

  372. one near the start

  373. of when they set out,

  374. and one a bit further on

  375. that the psalmist talks about here.

  376. First one after the start,

  377. the Israelites have come out of Egypt.

  378. They've got stuck in front of the Red Sea

  379. with the Egyptians charging up behind them,

  380. and God miraculously passed the Red Sea

  381. and the Israelites were able to get over

  382. and the Egyptians are all drowned in it.

  383. And there were then three incidents

  384. where the Israelites felt

  385. they had a great need of God.

  386. First was they came to some water

  387. and discovered the water was undrinkable.

  388. The water was very bitter.

  389. And God, through Moses,

  390. made that water drinkable,

  391. made it sweet.

  392. They then went on a bit

  393. and they were grumbling

  394. because they were really hungry.

  395. They were saying,

  396. why have you brought us, Moses,

  397. out of Egypt

  398. just to die here

  399. in this wilderness?

  400. And God graciously provided for them

  401. manna that they would get every day

  402. or six days a week

  403. and the seventh day

  404. there'd be enough

  405. on the sixth day to do

  406. throughout their time in the wilderness.

  407. He also provided that time quail.

  408. So God provided what they needed.

  409. They went on a bit

  410. and they got thirsty.

  411. Now you think at this point,

  412. the Israelites would realize,

  413. well, God can look after us.

  414. He got us out of Egypt.

  415. He got us across the Red Sea.

  416. He made that water drinkable.

  417. He's given us food to eat.

  418. But no,

  419. they grumble against Moses.

  420. Moses worried

  421. they're going to actually kill him

  422. that they're so angry with him

  423. because they haven't believed

  424. in what God is doing for them.

  425. And that's what the reference here

  426. to Mereba and Massa is.

  427. It's the same place

  428. and there are two names for it

  429. given in the passage

  430. in Exodus chapter 17.

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  431. And Moses,

  432. it was so exasperated

  433. with Israel at that point,

  434. quite rightly,

  435. and God too is exasperated

  436. because they've hardened their hearts,

  437. they've seen his goodness,

  438. and rather than seeing

  439. the lack of water

  440. as being God testing them

  441. and an example for them

  442. to show the faith they had in God,

  443. rather they made it a test of God.

  444. Well, if he's the real God,

  445. can he do something for us?

  446. They ignored the good

  447. that God had done for them

  448. and they tried to get him to do more.

  449. That's incident number one,

  450. as I say,

  451. near the start of the wanderings.

  452. Incident number two

  453. in the second part of it

  454. is in some ways

  455. the culmination

  456. of a great period

  457. of unbelief by the Israelites.

  458. Again and again,

  459. the Israelites experienced

  460. God's grace

  461. and they throw it back in his face

  462. and they still won't believe.

  463. So Moses sent some spies out

  464. to spy out the land of Canaan

  465. where they were going to settle.

  466. And the spies came back

  467. and they said,

  468. it's a wonderful land.

  469. It's flowing with milk and honey.

  470. It's everything

  471. we could possibly want.

  472. But they said,

  473. the people there

  474. are really strong.

  475. There are giants among them.

  476. They're much bigger than us.

  477. There's no way

  478. we can go in

  479. and conquer that land.

  480. And of the 12 spies

  481. that went,

  482. 10 of them gave that message.

  483. Two of them,

  484. Joshua and Caleb,

  485. came back and said,

  486. yes, with God's help,

  487. we can do it.

  488. But the 10

  489. who were unbelieving,

  490. they won over the people

  491. and the people

  492. were terrified

  493. of going forward.

  494. They didn't believe

  495. the God

  496. who had led them out of Egypt,

  497. who had done so much for them,

  498. was able to take them

  499. into the promised land.

  500. They didn't really understand God

  501. because their hearts

  502. were hard.

  503. And the consequence of that

  504. was out of the Adai

  505. to left Egypt,

  506. only two,

  507. Joshua and Caleb,

  508. made it into the land

  509. at the end,

  510. which is referenced there

  511. to entering my rest.

  512. Only two of those

  513. who left Egypt

  514. as adults

  515. went into Canaan

  516. at the end

  517. because everyone else

  518. refused to believe God.

  519. So this is about

  520. hard hearts.

  521. Hard hearts

  522. and not believing God,

  523. not taking up his word

  524. and not believing

  525. that he can continue

  526. to be with us

  527. as he has been

  528. in the past.

  529. Now these are

  530. very important verses.

  531. The verses are sometimes

  532. missed when

  533. this psalm is used

  534. as a call to worship

  535. as it is in some traditions,

  536. but they're verses

  537. that are picked up

  538. in the book of Hebrews

  539. and for two chapters

  540. the writer to the Hebrews

  541. comments on the significance

  542. of these psalms

  543. to us today,

  544. of these verses

  545. to us today.

  546. So it's not just

  547. about the Israelites

  548. back in the wilderness,

  549. back under Moses.

  550. It's not just

  551. about the immediate

  552. audience

  553. that the writer

  554. is addressing this to

  555. and the Israelites

  556. as they sing the psalm.

  557. It is very relevant

  558. for us today

  559. as Christians.

  560. And the message is

  561. we must not

  562. harden

  563. our hearts.

  564. It is so easy

  565. for us to be

  566. led astray

  567. by the things

  568. of this world

  569. and for our hearts

  570. to become hard

  571. before God.

  572. Now what does a hard

  573. heart mean

  574. in this context?

  575. Well I suppose

  576. the first thing

  577. it means

  578. is that we forget

  579. all that God

  580. has done

  581. for us.

  582. That was the

  583. great sin

  584. of the Israelites

  585. wasn't it?

  586. They'd seen everything

  587. that God had done

  588. and they didn't

  589. pay any attention

  590. to it.

  591. All they could see

  592. was the problems

  593. and the difficulties

  594. they were facing

  595. then.

  596. They forgot

  597. what God

  598. had done

  599. for them.

  600. And we need

  601. to be very careful

  602. if we know God

  603. if we have put

  604. our trust

  605. in the Lord Jesus

  606. that we don't

  607. forget

  608. all that he has

  609. done

  610. for us.

  611. Because if we do

  612. forget what he's

  613. done for us

  614. then as we look

  615. forward

  616. we won't be able

  617. to exercise

  618. the faith in him

  619. that we need to.

  620. We have a God

  621. who loved us

  622. so much

  623. that he sent

  624. his son

  625. into the world

  626. to die for us

  627. on the cross

  628. and to forgive us

  629. for all the wrong

  630. that we've done

  631. and to bring us

  632. into a relationship

  633. with him

  634. where we can come

  635. before him

  636. and we can call him

  637. our father.

  638. And we need to look

  639. back and say

  640. God has been good

  641. to me.

  642. We also need to look

  643. back over our lives

  644. and to see

  645. times when

  646. we have needed

  647. God

  648. and he has been

  649. there

  650. and he has helped us.

  651. Now I can't

  652. say what these times

  653. have been for you

  654. but there have been

  655. times where

  656. I'm sure all of us

  657. who know the Lord Jesus

  658. when we have

  659. struggled

  660. and God has been there

  661. and he has

  662. helped us

  663. as he helped

  664. the Israelites

  665. as they went

  666. through the desert.

  667. And we need to

  668. remember

  669. what God

  670. has done

  671. for us

  672. and that needs

  673. to be the thing

  674. which gives us

  675. faith

  676. to know that

  677. the God

  678. who has been

  679. with us

  680. in the past

  681. will also be

  682. with us

  683. in the future

  684. whatever we may

  685. face

  686. in this life.

  687. Hard hearts

  688. forget

  689. all that

  690. God

  691. has done

  692. for them.

  693. Second thing

  694. I suggest

  695. that would be

  696. characteristic

  697. of hard hearts

  698. is not

  699. believing

  700. what God

  701. has promised

  702. to us.

  703. So God

  704. had promised

  705. to the Israelites

  706. he'd lead them

  707. out of Egypt

  708. and he would

  709. take them

  710. to the land

  711. that had been

  712. promised many

  713. centuries before

  714. to Abraham.

  715. And the people

  716. knew God's word

  717. and yet they

  718. clearly didn't

  719. believe it.

  720. They spent

  721. an awful lot of

  722. time going

  723. through the wilderness

  724. saying I wish

  725. we could go

  726. back to Egypt.

  727. We'd be much

  728. better off in Egypt

  729. than we are now.

  730. It was rubbish.

  731. They were slaves

  732. in Egypt.

  733. They were under

  734. oppressors.

  735. They were in a

  736. terrible situation

  737. and yet they

  738. couldn't understand

  739. that they needed

  740. to follow God's

  741. plan and they

  742. needed to believe

  743. God's word

  744. to them.

  745. Important for us

  746. too that as we

  747. come to look

  748. at life and look

  749. at his problems

  750. that we do it

  751. believing that

  752. God's word

  753. is absolutely

  754. true and it

  755. can be the

  756. thing that

  757. gives us the

  758. strength to

  759. keep going

  760. as we trust

  761. in him.

  762. If we in any

  763. way start to

  764. doubt God's

  765. word then our

  766. faith is failing,

  767. our hearts

  768. are becoming

  769. hard.

  770. Then the third

  771. thing I think

  772. that characterizes

  773. hard hearts

  774. is very much

  775. a focus on

  776. myself

  777. rather than

  778. looking

  779. outward.

  780. So the Israelites

  781. were totally

  782. focused on them

  783. and on their

  784. situation and

  785. their worries

  786. and their

  787. anxieties and

  788. they weren't

  789. really interested

  790. in anyone else

  791. or in what God

  792. was doing for

  793. them.

  794. Very easy for us

  795. too to have

  796. hard hearts and

  797. to become very

  798. self-centered.

  799. Not focusing on

  800. God and on

  801. his greatness and

  802. not focusing either

  803. on others and

  804. seeing their needs

  805. and thinking well

  806. how can I help to

  807. meet that need.

  808. If we just come

  809. along on a

  810. Sunday morning

  811. looking for

  812. something for

  813. ourselves and

  814. not really

  815. concerned about

  816. anyone else,

  817. if we have no

  818. interest in other

  819. Christians during

  820. the week we just

  821. want to get what's

  822. best for us,

  823. then that is a

  824. sign perhaps that

  825. our hearts are

  826. becoming hard.

  827. So hard hearts,

  828. you forget what

  829. God's done,

  830. you don't trust

  831. God's word,

  832. and you only care

  833. about yourself.

  834. That's where the

  835. Israelites were,

  836. and the

  837. psalmist and

  838. the writer to

  839. the Hebrews says

  840. there's a real

  841. danger that that

  842. is where we

  843. get to as well.

  844. And yet we

  845. shouldn't.

  846. We need to

  847. remember that the

  848. God who didn't

  849. spare his own

  850. son but gave

  851. him up for us

  852. all, he will

  853. also freely with

  854. him give us

  855. all things.

  856. In other words,

  857. we remember what

  858. God has done in

  859. giving his son and

  860. we recognize that

  861. he will give us

  862. all things.

  863. We need to

  864. recognize, as

  865. the writer of the

  866. Hebrews does,

  867. the word of God

  868. is living and

  869. active and

  870. sharp and

  871. any two-edged

  872. sword.

  873. And when we

  874. hear the word of

  875. God, we need to

  876. let him speak to

  877. us and to

  878. change our life,

  879. to change our

  880. hearts, to bring

  881. us closer to

  882. Jesus.

  883. And we need to

  884. remember that if

  885. we are going to

  886. reflect the love

  887. that Jesus had,

  888. then we need to

  889. be outward

  890. thinking, we need

  891. to be concerned

  892. about others, not

  893. to have hard

  894. hearts and to

  895. be self-centered.

  896. And why is this

  897. important?

  898. Well, says the

  899. psalmist, it's so

  900. that you can

  901. enter God's

  902. rest.

  903. His race in

  904. this desert never

  905. got to enter

  906. God's rest, in

  907. that case, the

  908. promised land.

  909. Writer of the

  910. Hebrews says,

  911. picking up this

  912. psalm, be careful

  913. that you don't

  914. miss out on

  915. God's rest as

  916. well.

  917. And I think there

  918. are two aspects

  919. to God's rest.

  920. One of it is

  921. the kind of

  922. present day, that

  923. as we experience

  924. God's rest, it is

  925. a peace, it's an

  926. awareness of God's

  927. presence, it is

  928. not being too

  929. taken up with

  930. events that we

  931. can't see, that

  932. God is there and

  933. God will help us

  934. through it.

  935. So it is being

  936. able to rest in

  937. God and know

  938. he has done for

  939. us.

  940. And then there's

  941. the forward-looking

  942. aspect, that

  943. those who know

  944. and who love the

  945. Lord Jesus, there

  946. is an ultimate

  947. rest for them when

  948. work is over,

  949. when this life

  950. is behind us

  951. and we go to

  952. be with the

  953. Lord Jesus and

  954. to be with him

  955. forever.

  956. And that in a

  957. sense is what

  958. is symbolized in

  959. Israel, it's

  960. going to the

  961. promised land, it

  962. is us if we

  963. know and trust the

  964. Lord Jesus entering

  965. into his rest at

  966. the end of our

  967. lives.

  968. The psalmist says

  969. make sure that you

  970. get that rest.

  971. And one other

  972. thing he says,

  973. today.

  974. And the writer

  975. of Hebrews again

  976. picks it up, he

  977. says today, if

  978. you would only

  979. hear his voice.

  980. Forty years the

  981. Israelites wandered

  982. through the

  983. wilderness.

  984. Forty years they

  985. had opportunities to

  986. believe God and to

  987. obey him and to

  988. have the assurance of

  989. his rest.

  990. Again and again as

  991. they failed him, God

  992. was willing to

  993. overlook that and to

  994. continue to bless

  995. them despite the

  996. fact that they

  997. didn't trust him.

  998. but in the end

  999. it was too late

  1000. for them and

  1001. they didn't get

  1002. into the

  1003. promised land.

  1004. And this I think

  1005. is designed to

  1006. bring a sense of

  1007. real urgency to

  1008. us.

  1009. Getting myself

  1010. right with God

  1011. whether that's

  1012. trusting the Lord

  1013. Jesus for the

  1014. first time or

  1015. coming back to

  1016. him and

  1017. confessing the

  1018. hardness has

  1019. come into my

  1020. heart.

  1021. That is something

  1022. that can't keep

  1023. getting put off.

  1024. It will

  1025. ultimately be

  1026. too late.

  1027. Today is the

  1028. day of salvation.

  1029. Today is the

  1030. time when we

  1031. need to get

  1032. ourselves right

  1033. before God.

  1034. So as I said

  1035. a psalm of two

  1036. halves.

  1037. One half which

  1038. is joyful and

  1039. celebratory and

  1040. another half which

  1041. is really quite

  1042. solemn and is

  1043. designed to make

  1044. us think and

  1045. examine ourselves

  1046. before God.

  1047. And let's all of

  1048. us today, let's

  1049. rejoice in what

  1050. God has done for

  1051. us but let's

  1052. also examine

  1053. our hearts.

  1054. Heart disease is

  1055. one of the

  1056. biggest killers

  1057. in our country

  1058. and in the

  1059. world today.

  1060. And most heart

  1061. disease is

  1062. caused largely

  1063. by lifestyle,

  1064. by what we

  1065. eat, by not

  1066. getting enough

  1067. exercise and

  1068. so on.

  1069. And perhaps that

  1070. is one thing that

  1071. I can leave with

  1072. you as a practical

  1073. thing to think

  1074. about as we

  1075. take this psalm

  1076. away.

  1077. how can I

  1078. have a healthy

  1079. heart before

  1080. God?

  1081. Well it's partly

  1082. about taking in

  1083. the right things,

  1084. it is about

  1085. reading God's

  1086. word and

  1087. meditating on it.

  1088. And can I

  1089. challenge everyone

  1090. this week to

  1091. spend time before

  1092. God reading and

  1093. meditating on

  1094. his word.

  1095. And it's also

  1096. about what I

  1097. do.

  1098. It's about the

  1099. exercise we like

  1100. when we're talking

  1101. about our

  1102. physical hearts.

  1103. And this week,

  1104. let's go out

  1105. with hearts

  1106. that are soft

  1107. and that are

  1108. willing to

  1109. serve God

  1110. and to serve

  1111. others and to

  1112. show other

  1113. people the love

  1114. of the Lord

  1115. Jesus for us.

  1116. Let's not be

  1117. those with

  1118. hard hearts,

  1119. let's be those

  1120. who go and

  1121. who listen and

  1122. who obey and

  1123. who then can

  1124. rejoice in our

  1125. great God and

  1126. in all that he

  1127. has done for

  1128. us.

  1129. Let's pray

  1130. together.

  1131. Our Father,

  1132. we thank you

  1133. for your word,

  1134. we thank you

  1135. for the joy

  1136. that is in

  1137. the psalm

  1138. and yet the

  1139. solemnity.

  1140. And we pray

  1141. that you will

  1142. give us that

  1143. joy as we

  1144. think about

  1145. all that you

  1146. have done

  1147. for us.

  1148. But we pray

  1149. also that you

  1150. will soften

  1151. our hearts,

  1152. that you will

  1153. remove indifference

  1154. from us,

  1155. that you will

  1156. make us wholly

  1157. committed to

  1158. you,

  1159. that we will

  1160. listen to your

  1161. word and that

  1162. we will believe

  1163. it and that

  1164. we will obey

  1165. it.

  1166. For some,

  1167. that might be

  1168. for the first

  1169. time believing

  1170. that Jesus

  1171. came and

  1172. died for

  1173. their sins

  1174. and putting

  1175. their trust

  1176. in him.

  1177. And for some

  1178. of us it

  1179. might be a

  1180. returning to

  1181. you, a

  1182. softening of

  1183. our hearts as

  1184. we recognise

  1185. how far we've

  1186. gone from

  1187. you and how

  1188. much we need

  1189. to change to

  1190. get back to

  1191. the rest and

  1192. the joy that

  1193. you promised

  1194. to us.

  1195. Help us to

  1196. examine ourselves

  1197. today and to

  1198. respond appropriately,

  1199. that we may

  1200. have a joy in

  1201. the Lord,

  1202. that we may

  1203. have a real

  1204. rest in him.

  1205. We give you

  1206. thanks and we

  1207. commit ourselves

  1208. to you.

  1209. In the name

  1210. of the Lord

  1211. Jesus.

  1212. Amen.
