  1. Thanks very much Gary and Band. Good evening everyone, really good to have you with us this evening as we come together and continue looking at the book of 1 Samuel.

  2. I've called tonight's talk Honor or Horror, Honor or Horror.

  3. And as we read the passage, you might look out for examples of where people honour God or are honoured by God,

  4. and also things that you find horrifying or shocking, either in what people do or in the judgment that comes on them.

  5. So we're going to read from 1 Samuel and chapter 2 to begin with.

  6. 1 Samuel chapter 2 and we'll be reading from verse 12.

    1 Samuel 2 chapter mention

  7. 1 Samuel chapter 2 and verse 12.

    1 Samuel 2 chapter mention

  8. And it says this, Eli's sons were scoundrels. They had no regard for the Lord.

  9. Now it was the practice of the priests that whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice,

  10. the priest's servant would come with a three-pound fork in his hand while the meat was being boiled.

  11. And would plunge the fork into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot.

  12. Whatever the fork brought up, the priest would take for himself.

  13. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh.

  14. But even before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the people who were sacrificing,

  15. Give the priest some meat to roast. He won't accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.

  16. If the person said to him, Let the fat be burned up first and then take whatever you want,

  17. the servant would then answer, No, hand it over now.

  18. If you don't, I'll take it by force.

  19. The sin of the young men was very great in the Lord's sight,

  20. for they were treating the Lord's offering with contempt.

  21. But Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy wearing a linen ephod.

  22. Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband

  23. to offer the annual sacrifice.

  24. Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying,

  25. May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to the Lord.

  26. Then they would go home.

  27. And the Lord was gracious to Hannah.

  28. She gave birth to three sons and two daughters.

  29. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord.

  30. Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel,

  31. and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

  32. So he said to them,

  33. Why do you do such things?

  34. I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours.

  35. No, my sons,

  36. the report I hear spreading among the Lord's people is not good.

  37. If one person sins against another,

  38. God may mediate for the offender.

  39. But if anyone sins against the Lord,

  40. who will intercede for them?

  41. His sons, however, did not listen to their father's rebuke,

  42. for it was the Lord's will to put them to death.

  43. And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.

  44. Now a man of God came to Eli and said to him,

  45. This is what the Lord says,

  46. Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestors' family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh?

  47. I chose your ancestors out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest,

  48. to go up to my altar,

  49. to burn incense,

  50. and to wear an ephod in my presence.

  51. I also gave your ancestors' family all the food offerings presented by the Israelites.

  52. Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling?

  53. Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?

  54. Therefore, the Lord, the God of Israel declares,

  55. I promise that members of your family would minister before me forever.

  56. But now the Lord declares,

  57. Far be it from me.

  58. Those who honor me I will honor,

  59. but those who despise me will be disdained.

  60. The time is coming when I will cut short your strength

  61. and the strength of your priestly house,

  62. so that no one in it will reach old age.

  63. And you will see distress in my dwelling.

  64. Although good will be done to Israel,

  65. no one in your family line will ever reach old age.

  66. Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar,

  67. I will spare only to destroy your sight and stop your strength,

  68. and all your descendants will die in the prime of life.

  69. And what happens to your two sons,

  70. Hophni and Phinehas, will be assigned to you?

  71. They will both die on the same day.

  72. I will raise up for myself a faithful priest

  73. who will do according to what is in my heart and mind.

  74. I will firmly establish his priestly house

  75. and they will minister before my anointed one always.

  76. Then everyone left in your family line

  77. will come and bow down before him

  78. for a piece of silver and loaf of bread and plead,

  79. Appoint to me some priestly office

  80. so I can have food to eat.

  81. I'm sure God will bless his word as we consider it together.

  82. Let's just take a second to pray together.

  83. Our Father, we thank you that this is your word,

  84. that it is therefore useful to us,

  85. whether this is in teaching, in rebuking,

  86. in helping us to understand better your ways.

  87. I would say that you will speak to us this evening.

  88. Help us to understand what is relevant to us today

  89. and which should affect the way we live our lives

  90. as we seek to honour and glorify the Lord Jesus.

  91. We pray that your voice will be heard,

  92. that the things which are of yourself will be remembered

  93. and that you will help us to draw closer to you

  94. as we consider your word.

  95. We ask for your presence in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  96. Amen.

  97. There's a couple on the screen.

  98. Our Horst and Herland Kasner.

  99. Kasner was a Lutheran pastor

  100. who did something very unusual in 1954.

  101. He moved with his wife and their four-month-old daughter

  102. from West Germany to East Germany.

  103. Now that was at a time when many people

  104. were moving in the other direction.

  105. East Germany, a very oppressive communist regime.

  106. West Germany, of course,

  107. a democracy and one which was recovering

  108. from the Second World War.

  109. But Pastor Kasner moved with his wife

  110. and daughter to East Germany.

  111. And so the young girl grew up

  112. in that oppressive communist regime.

  113. In a slightly unusual situation

  114. in that all around her,

  115. she could see the things that were happening

  116. and the things in many ways would be quite horrifying.

  117. And yet at the same time,

  118. she was growing up in a Christian family,

  119. in a Christian environment,

  120. and learning something of the gospel of the Lord Jesus.

  121. Indeed, the area where they were,

  122. as well as having this house where they lived,

  123. right next door to them,

  124. there was a centre for disabled people

  125. which Christians in that area were helping with.

  126. 1989, and there was the fall of the Berlin Wall.

  127. And that young girl,

  128. that baby, when she moved to East Germany,

  129. by then obviously had grown to be a woman.

  130. She was quite a successful chemist.

  131. And at that point,

  132. she decided she wanted to go into politics.

  133. And we know her today

  134. as perhaps the most successful female politician

  135. in the world.

  136. It is Angela Merkel,

  137. who is the leader of the German state.

  138. And she is still very much influenced

  139. by the way in which she grew up,

  140. by the strange juxtaposition of,

  141. on the one hand,

  142. growing up in a Christian environment

  143. and being taught God's ways,

  144. and the other hand,

  145. observing around her all the evils

  146. that were associated with that communist state.

  147. And she was very much shaped by that.

  148. For example,

  149. the way in which she received the refugees

  150. from the Middle East a few years ago,

  151. I believe was very much influenced

  152. by the way she grew up

  153. and by the things she saw

  154. and by the compassion from that,

  155. that she developed.

  156. And she is,

  157. today she belongs to an evangelical church

  158. and she would say

  159. that she still has a strong Christian faith.

  160. And I think the story of Angela Merkel

  161. resonates as we think about 1 Samuel 2.

  162. Because here we have a situation

  163. where the state,

  164. those who are in leadership,

  165. in this case the priests,

  166. are utterly corrupt

  167. and are oppressing the people.

  168. And yet we have a young boy

  169. who is growing up quietly in the temple

  170. and is learning God's ways

  171. and would go on to be a great leader

  172. of his nation.

  173. I'm talking about Samuel, of course.

  174. And we have this dual thing

  175. which is what I've called

  176. the talk honour or horror.

  177. We have this dual thing going on.

  178. On the one hand,

  179. we have the horrors

  180. of what the priests are doing

  181. to the people

  182. and in disobedience to God.

  183. And on the other hand,

  184. we have Samuel and his family

  185. who are honouring God

  186. and being honoured by him.

  187. So what we're going to do this evening,

  188. very simple,

  189. is we're going to look at three people,

  190. three groups of people.

  191. We're going to look at Hophni and Phinehas,

  192. the sons of Eli.

  193. We're going to look at Eli.

  194. And then we're going to look at Samuel

  195. and a little bit about his family as well.

  196. And hopefully learn some lessons from that

  197. about how we should honour God

  198. and about some of the horrors

  199. that can happen

  200. when people don't honour God,

  201. have no knowledge of him.

  202. So let's start with the two sons,

  203. Hophni and Phinehas.

  204. I've called this section extreme evil.

  205. I don't think that's putting it too highly.

  206. Here were two men

  207. who had no knowledge of God.

  208. Verse 12 says,

  209. Eli's sons were scoundrels.

  210. They had no regard for the Lord.

  211. If you translate it literally,

  212. it says they didn't know God.

  213. And both translations are probably fine.

  214. They didn't know God.

  215. They had no personal relationship with God.

  216. And they certainly had no concern

  217. for God or for obeying him.

  218. This despite them being in positions of leadership,

  219. of religious leadership in the land,

  220. and those who the people should have been able

  221. to look up to and respect

  222. and to copy their example.

  223. These young men had no regard for the Lord

  224. and similarly no regard for the people.

  225. Let's look briefly at what was going wrong.

  226. In the first place,

  227. there was religious abuse.

  228. And that's in the first part of the passage.

  229. And this was seemed to us

  230. rather strange account

  231. of what happened to the meat for the sacrifices.

  232. So let me just explain a little bit

  233. about what should have happened

  234. and then we'll talk about what did happen

  235. and why that was so wrong.

  236. All of the sacrifices the people brought to God,

  237. except for the burnt offering,

  238. which had to be totally burnt,

  239. part of it was devoted to God,

  240. part of it was given to the priest,

  241. and part of it was available

  242. to the person making the offering

  243. that they could enjoy

  244. part of the sacrifice themselves.

  245. So to be specific,

  246. the fat had to be burnt off

  247. and had to be devoted to God.

  248. The priests were entitled

  249. to the breast and the right thigh,

  250. so they got two good bits

  251. of the animal for themselves

  252. because the priest needed something to live on

  253. and that was what their due was.

  254. And the rest of the offering,

  255. the individual making the sacrifice,

  256. could share with their family

  257. in the way appointed by God.

  258. Now here the priests were doing two things

  259. that were not in the law.

  260. The first was as well as taking their portion,

  261. presumably, it doesn't say,

  262. but presumably they were taking

  263. what they were due to get from the law,

  264. they were taking extra.

  265. They were able to take potluck

  266. and to dip their three-point fork

  267. into the pot

  268. and to take whatever came out of it

  269. for themselves.

  270. So in that sense,

  271. they were robbing the people

  272. who were making the sacrifice

  273. of something which they should have had.

  274. The priests were taking more

  275. than their share.

  276. And that was bad.

  277. But what was much worse

  278. was that they also wanted

  279. to take something

  280. before the meat was boiled.

  281. So they were saying,

  282. we don't really like boiled meat that much.

  283. It's not so much of a treat.

  284. What we really want is a roast meal.

  285. We want roast meat.

  286. That is much more tasty.

  287. That is much more enjoyable for us.

  288. And so they would take the meat

  289. from the people by force if necessary

  290. before the fat had been burnt off.

  291. And so they were taking

  292. not just part of what was due

  293. to the person making the sacrifice.

  294. They were also taking part

  295. that should have been devoted to God,

  296. which was evidence of the individual's

  297. devotion to God

  298. and desire to do what was right before him.

  299. In other words,

  300. as well as being greedy for themselves

  301. and taking what they weren't entitled to,

  302. they were also at the same time

  303. leading the people into sin

  304. in that they weren't able to give God

  305. what they knew God was entitled to,

  306. what the law had demanded from them.

  307. There was religious abuse of the worst kind.

  308. Then a little bit later down in the passage,

  309. we see moral depravity.

  310. So as well as this taking by force

  311. what wasn't right for them,

  312. the priests in that day,

  313. they were also sleeping with the woman

  314. who were responsible for looking after

  315. the temple courts.

  316. Very much in the nature of what religions

  317. round about would have done.

  318. Very much against the law of God

  319. and what as God's people

  320. they should have been doing.

  321. I have a question about that.

  322. Not expecting you to answer out loud,

  323. but think about it.

  324. Which of these abuses

  325. horrifies you more?

  326. Which do you find more shocking?

  327. I think for most of us

  328. it's the sexual abuse

  329. that we find more shocking to begin with.

  330. We look at it and perhaps we say,

  331. well this is an old ritual,

  332. it's not really relevant in our day

  333. because we don't have to make

  334. these kind of sacrifices,

  335. but we understand more about

  336. what was happening in the second sin

  337. and that is really, really shocking to us.

  338. And so it should be.

  339. But I'd suggest

  340. the first sin should be no less shocking.

  341. Because what the people were doing here,

  342. what the priests were doing here,

  343. was deliberately disobeying God

  344. and the commands that he had given

  345. and more than that,

  346. they were encouraging the people

  347. to disobey God

  348. and forcing them to do it

  349. if they weren't willing to.

  350. Not content just to get

  351. what didn't belong to them.

  352. They were taking from God

  353. and actually taking from

  354. the religious exercise

  355. of the people who came to the temple.

  356. And that is absolutely shocking.

  357. And I would say,

  358. as we start with the religious abuse,

  359. perhaps it's almost inevitable

  360. what follows next.

  361. That if we get things wrong

  362. in our relationship with God

  363. and what we give to God

  364. and the way we deal with God,

  365. then it is a slippery slope

  366. and that moral depravity

  367. is something

  368. which is very likely to follow.

  369. So I would say

  370. we should be shocked

  371. at both the sins

  372. of these priests of Hophni and Phinehas

  373. and their associates.

  374. Both of them are utterly unacceptable

  375. and should be a real warning to us.

  376. Now hopefully none of us

  377. are engaged directly,

  378. at least in either of these sins.

  379. But there are a couple of lessons,

  380. I think, from it

  381. that I would take.

  382. Two groups of people,

  383. I think, need to be very careful

  384. to make sure we don't fall

  385. into this kind of sin.

  386. Now I belong to both groups,

  387. so I'm talking to myself

  388. on both occasions as well,

  389. no doubt to many of you.

  390. The first group is those of us

  391. who have grown up

  392. in Christian homes,

  393. who have grown up in environments

  394. where there was a love of the Lord Jesus

  395. and a desire to serve Him

  396. and to live for Him.

  397. Now we know, I'm sure,

  398. that growing up in a Christian home

  399. isn't a guarantee

  400. that we'll come to faith

  401. in the Lord Jesus.

  402. Faith is a personal thing

  403. and we need to put our trust

  404. in the Lord Jesus

  405. and believe individually

  406. that He died for our sins

  407. and that we can have forgiveness

  408. through Him.

  409. But even having done that,

  410. there's a danger, I think,

  411. for quite a lot of us

  412. that this is something

  413. we've known all our life,

  414. we're very familiar with

  415. and perhaps we don't treat it

  416. as seriously as we should.

  417. That obeying God,

  418. serving Him,

  419. seeking to bring others to Him

  420. and seeking in particular

  421. not to trip others up

  422. in their Christian faith

  423. or to do things

  424. that would draw them away from God,

  425. these can easily become

  426. too low priorities for us

  427. if our faith becomes too familiar

  428. and if we lose that burning desire

  429. to serve God

  430. and to live for Him

  431. and to draw others to Him.

  432. And those of us

  433. who have been in a Christian environment

  434. all our life,

  435. we need to be very careful.

  436. We don't take it for granted.

  437. It is an enormous privilege

  438. to have godly parents

  439. and to be able to follow their example,

  440. but we need to make sure

  441. we are following that example,

  442. that we are devoted to the Lord Jesus,

  443. that we are living for Him.

  444. The second group is Christian leaders,

  445. practically those

  446. who are in some kind of full-time Christian work,

  447. but all those who are leaders of God's people.

  448. And the real warning here is,

  449. am I doing anything

  450. that would distract people

  451. or would draw them away

  452. from their love for the Lord Jesus?

  453. As they look at me

  454. or as I talk to them,

  455. and as they expect

  456. for someone who is in a position

  457. of leadership within a church

  458. to get a good example

  459. and good teaching,

  460. is there anything I am doing

  461. that could draw others away from Christ

  462. that could make them stumble

  463. in their faith?

  464. Again, probably not as dramatically

  465. as in the case of Hophni and Phinehas

  466. for most of us,

  467. but nevertheless a real danger

  468. that as Christian leaders,

  469. as those who are supposed

  470. to be setting an example

  471. that actually we set the wrong example

  472. and we cause people

  473. to stumble in their faith.

  474. So two possibilities.

  475. Some of you may not fall into neither good,

  476. some of us fall into both,

  477. but let's examine ourselves

  478. if either of these applies to us.

  479. But let's look at the second horror

  480. that I think there is

  481. in the case of Hophni and Phinehas.

  482. Eli eventually,

  483. eventually starts to plead with them

  484. and points out to them

  485. what is wrong

  486. and what they are doing

  487. and asks them to discontinue it.

  488. But the writer who records,

  489. they didn't listen to their father's rebuke,

  490. for it was the Lord's will

  491. to put them to death.

  492. It was the Lord's will

  493. to put them to death.

  494. Now I think that in some ways

  495. is quite shocking for us as well.

  496. Doesn't God want everyone to be saved?

  497. Isn't grace available

  498. to all those who will receive it?

  499. Absolutely yes.

  500. And yet we can't receive God's grace

  501. without the working of God's Spirit

  502. in our lives.

  503. And it appears from Scripture,

  504. another example would be Pharaoh in Exodus,

  505. it appears from Scripture

  506. that there are those

  507. who get so far down

  508. into their sin

  509. and their antipathy to God

  510. and their absolute unwillingness

  511. to be obedient to God

  512. that God almost says,

  513. well, you have decided,

  514. you have resolved to be this way.

  515. And the Spirit stops striving with them

  516. and pricking their conscience

  517. and seeking to draw them to God.

  518. I put that out slightly tentatively,

  519. but I think that is the implication

  520. of what's said here.

  521. But let me do it with two caveats.

  522. The first thing is,

  523. we can never make a judgment

  524. that someone is beyond God's grace.

  525. As far as we are concerned,

  526. everyone who is a sinner before God,

  527. if they will come to God,

  528. then they will receive his grace.

  529. They will receive the mercy

  530. that he is willing to give.

  531. And if they come in faith to the Lord Jesus,

  532. they will receive forgiveness for sins.

  533. And we are not able to say whether someone's heart is so hard

  534. that they're never going to do that.

  535. Our job is to constantly witness to them

  536. and seek to show them God's grace

  537. and to bring them to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  538. And the second thing I would say is that none of us individually

  539. should ever think that we are beyond God's grace.

  540. Indeed, if we're having these thoughts,

  541. it probably means that we're not,

  542. that we still have some conscience.

  543. The Spirit is still working in our lives.

  544. However far we may sink,

  545. however great our sin may be,

  546. however much we may feel that we have failed God,

  547. for all of us,

  548. if we come to him,

  549. there is grace

  550. and he is willing to receive us

  551. and to heap that grace on us

  552. and to wonderfully bless us

  553. as we repent for our sins.

  554. So don't let the passage about hard hearts,

  555. about God's will,

  556. as in this passage,

  557. don't let them put you off

  558. seeking to win others for the Lord Jesus

  559. and don't let them put you off

  560. coming to Jesus for mercy

  561. and for forgiveness

  562. for all the wrong that you've done.

  563. But two horrors,

  564. the horror of what the sons of Eli did

  565. and the horror of the fact

  566. that ultimately they were beyond redemption,

  567. that God had decreed

  568. that they must be punished for their wrong.

  569. Let's move on and look at Eli.

  570. Eli, like many characters in scriptures,

  571. is a bit of a conundrum

  572. because you look at Eli in one hand

  573. and you say,

  574. here's a good man.

  575. Here's a man who knew God,

  576. who honoured God

  577. and who had respect for God's word.

  578. And then you look at this chapter

  579. and you look at God's verdict on Eli

  580. where he says,

  581. why do you honour your sons more than me?

  582. So I suggest that Eli was fundamentally a good man,

  583. but he had this fatal flaw

  584. that he endowed his sons,

  585. that he didn't discipline them as they should

  586. and ultimately that led to his downfall before God.

  587. But let's look at the good side first.

  588. As we look at Eli's dealings with Samuel

  589. and with his family,

  590. apart from his initial mistake

  591. in thinking what Hannah was doing

  592. when she was praying,

  593. they thought she was drunk.

  594. Apart from that,

  595. Eli was a man who sought to bring Samuel

  596. and his family closer to God.

  597. He recognised in Hannah and Elkanah

  598. a couple who were devoted to the Lord,

  599. who wanted to live for him

  600. and who wanted to do what was right.

  601. And indeed,

  602. who so much wanted to do what was right

  603. that they were willing to give their son

  604. to work in the temple

  605. to devote him to the Lord's service.

  606. And as they come to the temple,

  607. year after year,

  608. Eli is there.

  609. He's there to meet them.

  610. He's there to bless them.

  611. He's there to pray for them.

  612. As Samuel ministers day to day in the temple,

  613. it appears that Eli was there

  614. similarly to be a father figure to him.

  615. In many ways,

  616. I'm sure to show a good example,

  617. one of those in chapter three,

  618. when God speaks to Samuel,

  619. it's Eli who ultimately identifies

  620. that it's God speaking

  621. and Eli accepts even the judgment

  622. that's made against him

  623. and against his family,

  624. recognising the sovereignty of God.

  625. Eli was a man who knew God,

  626. a man who had great respect for God,

  627. and in many ways,

  628. a man who sought to do what was right.

  629. But he had this one fatal flaw

  630. that he managed to ignore completely

  631. the sins of his sons.

  632. In fact, it may be a bit worse than that.

  633. When Eli condemns his sons,

  634. when he talks to them,

  635. gives them the kind of father's warning talk,

  636. he very much focuses on their immorality,

  637. and he talks about the fact

  638. that they're sinning against God,

  639. and there's this thing about

  640. if you're sinning against someone else,

  641. God may intercede.

  642. Who's going to intercede

  643. if you're sinning against God?

  644. He doesn't really address

  645. their abuse of their priestly office.

  646. And there's some suggestion, I think,

  647. in what God says to Eli

  648. through the man of God

  649. that actually Eli was enjoying

  650. what his sons were getting

  651. wrongly from the people.

  652. If we jump forward to chapter 4

  653. and the death of Eli,

  654. it records that Eli was a rather fat man.

  655. He was rather big,

  656. and that was partly what contributed

  657. to his death.

  658. And perhaps that obesity

  659. was partly from all these roast meals

  660. that his sons were taking

  661. and were giving to him.

  662. Now, Eli, it doesn't look like

  663. he was actively involved in this,

  664. but perhaps he was complicit

  665. in that he ignored

  666. what his sons were doing

  667. and he accepted

  668. the results of their sin

  669. even though he wasn't actively involved

  670. in it himself.

  671. One way or another,

  672. Eli got this badly wrong.

  673. He should have looked at his sons

  674. and at the very least,

  675. he should have said

  676. they weren't fit

  677. for priestly office.

  678. Now, if you look at the law,

  679. he should have probably done

  680. quite a lot more to that

  681. in tending them away,

  682. perhaps even getting them

  683. put to death.

  684. But at the very least,

  685. he should have made sure

  686. that they didn't have

  687. the authority of being priests,

  688. that they were stripped

  689. of that duty,

  690. of that privilege before God.

  691. Eli, up to the point

  692. when he remonstrates with them,

  693. it appears had done

  694. absolutely nothing.

  695. He was a man

  696. who was leading the people,

  697. who was in some ways

  698. it appears leading the people

  699. quite well,

  700. and yet he couldn't lead

  701. his own family,

  702. and he didn't have the courage

  703. to discipline his sons

  704. when he should have.

  705. Great warning there

  706. to those of us

  707. who are parents,

  708. that we need to make sure

  709. in our dealing

  710. with our children,

  711. that we give them

  712. a good example,

  713. but also when they go wrong,

  714. that we are willing

  715. to rebuke them

  716. and to seek to bring them back

  717. into God's ways.

  718. Too often, I suspect,

  719. many of us are a bit like Eli,

  720. and we don't have

  721. these hard conversations

  722. when we really should.

  723. But that is what

  724. we're called to do.

  725. We cannot ignore sin,

  726. whoever it is

  727. who is committing it.

  728. Whether it's sins

  729. in our family,

  730. whether it's sins

  731. in the church,

  732. whether it's sins

  733. of our nation,

  734. then we should be

  735. standing against them

  736. and making sure

  737. that people know

  738. what our position is

  739. and what is right

  740. before God.

  741. God.

  742. It's a wonderful example

  743. of that, isn't there?

  744. In the New Testament,

  745. the Lord Jesus,

  746. he goes into the temple

  747. and as he sees

  748. the money changers.

  749. Now for many of us,

  750. we might have looked

  751. and we thought,

  752. this is terrible,

  753. how are they getting away

  754. with doing what

  755. they're doing there?

  756. The Lord Jesus

  757. didn't do that.

  758. He went in,

  759. he overturned their tables

  760. and he made it clear

  761. exactly what their sin was.

  762. They turned his father's house

  763. into a house of thieves.

  764. And we need similarly

  765. to have that horror of sin

  766. and desire to see it put right.

  767. But Eli didn't

  768. and so Eli comes under

  769. God's judgment.

  770. And the latter part

  771. of the chapter

  772. is this man of God

  773. who comes to Eli.

  774. A man of God coming to you

  775. is usually a bad sign

  776. in the Old Testament.

  777. It means you've done

  778. something wrong

  779. and God's going to

  780. rebuke you for it.

  781. It is that here,

  782. the man of God comes

  783. and he condemns Eli

  784. because he has failed

  785. to control his sons

  786. and because,

  787. says God,

  788. he has honoured his sons

  789. more than he honoured God.

  790. And so the judgment

  791. comes on Eli

  792. that ultimately

  793. his family

  794. are going to lose

  795. priestly office.

  796. Now we scroll

  797. just very briefly forward

  798. in the books of Samuel

  799. and we see

  800. in the next chapter

  801. the death of Hophni and Phinehas

  802. on the same day

  803. they're called

  804. as a heart of the covenant

  805. is taken by their enemies.

  806. Eli hears the news

  807. and he falls off the bench

  808. where he's sitting

  809. and he breaks his neck

  810. so he dies on the same day

  811. as well.

  812. Later in 1 Samuel

  813. we have an incident

  814. where Saul thinks

  815. that Eli's family

  816. are supporting David

  817. and he has most of them

  818. put to death.

  819. And then in 2 Samuel

  820. the one who escapes,

  821. the only one who escapes

  822. from Saul's slaughter

  823. is himself caught up

  824. in the battle

  825. that follows David's death

  826. and Solomon removes him

  827. from priestly office.

  828. And that is the end

  829. of the house of Eli

  830. as a priestly office.

  831. And instead it passes over

  832. to the descendants

  833. of Eliezer,

  834. one of the oldest sons

  835. of Abraham

  836. and when it talks here

  837. about the priest

  838. who will be raised up,

  839. the faithful priest,

  840. the priest forever,

  841. it is almost certainly

  842. talking about Zadok

  843. who was the priest

  844. under Solomon

  845. having served alongside

  846. Abiathar,

  847. Eli's descendant

  848. under David.

  849. Zadok is the faithful priest

  850. and it is his household

  851. from then on

  852. who have the priesthood.

  853. Of course when we look

  854. at the eternal priest

  855. we probably also think

  856. about the Lord Jesus

  857. but I'm not sure

  858. that in this passage

  859. particularly

  860. that is the main

  861. interpretation of it

  862. but of course

  863. the Lord Jesus

  864. is a priest forever

  865. as well

  866. and we can think

  867. about that.

  868. But the judgment

  869. comes on Eli's house

  870. and over a period

  871. in Saul's reign

  872. and David's reign

  873. and Solomon's reign

  874. Eli's house

  875. is taken away

  876. from the priesthood

  877. and is passed on

  878. to a different group

  879. of people

  880. also descendants

  881. of Aaron.

  882. That in a sense

  883. isn't that important

  884. just a bit of history

  885. but it is important

  886. that Eli

  887. comes under

  888. God's judgment.

  889. And even though

  890. as I've said

  891. Eli was

  892. in many ways

  893. fundamentally

  894. a good man

  895. God couldn't

  896. ignore his sin

  897. and the effects

  898. of his sin

  899. therefore affected

  900. future generations.

  901. In the same way

  902. as David's sin

  903. with Bathsheba

  904. and all things

  905. joined to that

  906. that's a devastating

  907. effect also

  908. on David's family.

  909. And even if we are

  910. people of God

  911. even if we know

  912. the Lord Jesus

  913. and love him ourselves

  914. our sins

  915. can also have

  916. a devastating effect

  917. on others.

  918. Not that God

  919. is unwilling

  920. to forgive us

  921. as he forgave

  922. David

  923. and yet our sins

  924. do have consequences

  925. we need to be aware

  926. of these.

  927. But a fundamental lesson

  928. I think for many of us

  929. is we can't

  930. just look at ourselves

  931. and try through

  932. our personal devotions

  933. to please God.

  934. If we are in

  935. positions of any

  936. kind of authority

  937. whether as leaders

  938. as parents

  939. or whatever

  940. we need to have

  941. this concept

  942. of being willing

  943. to tackle

  944. the difficult issues

  945. and the things

  946. that would drag

  947. other people down

  948. and to seek

  949. to correct them

  950. and to see them

  951. one for the Lord Jesus.

  952. Let's finish

  953. more positively.

  954. Samuel.

  955. I've called Samuel

  956. growing in grace.

  957. I think that's probably

  958. quite a good description

  959. of what it is here.

  960. Samuel 2.29

  961. Samuel continues

  962. to grow in stature

  963. and favour

  964. with the Lord

  965. and with people.

  966. When it says

  967. you go down the chapter

  968. that several times

  969. interspersed with all

  970. the sins of Eli's family

  971. you have these brief

  972. comments on Samuel.

  973. We have one

  974. we didn't read

  975. tonight

  976. it was really part of

  977. last week's passage

  978. in verse 11

  979. about Samuel

  980. serving before God.

  981. We have it again

  982. as Eli's sons

  983. evil is described

  984. in verse 18

  985. Samuel was ministering

  986. before the Lord

  987. then description

  988. of what Samuel's

  989. parents did.

  990. Verse 26

  991. the boy Samuel

  992. continued to go

  993. in stature

  994. and favour

  995. with the Lord

  996. and with people.

  997. And then if we read

  998. over into the first

  999. verse of chapter 3

1000. it says the boy Samuel

  1001. ministered

  1002. before the Lord

  1003. under Eli.

  1004. In other words

  1005. in all this chaos

  1006. that was created

  1007. by Eli's sons

  1008. in all their sinfulness

  1009. and despising God

  1010. in all Eli's weakness

  1011. in dealing with

  1012. the sins

  1013. of his family

1014. we have this bright ray

  1015. that we have Samuel

  1016. who is growing

  1017. and is maturing

  1018. and is coming

  1019. to faith in God

  1020. and who ultimately

  1021. will take over

  1022. much of the role

  1023. that was previously Eli

  1024. who would become

  1025. the prophet

  1026. and the judge

  1027. of Israel.

  1028. So two things

  1029. about the honour

  1030. that we can see

  1031. for Samuel.

  1032. And the first is

  1033. Samuel's family.

  1034. It is

  1035. Hannah

  1036. and Elkanah.

  1037. This couple

  1038. from Ramah

  1039. who had previously

  1040. been childless

  1041. though Elkanah

  1042. had children

  1043. by his other wife

  1044. previously been childless

  1045. and Hannah

  1046. promises

  1047. that if God

  1048. gives her a son

  1049. that son

  1050. will be devoted

  1051. to her

  1052. and will serve

  1053. in the temple.

  1054. The son

  1055. comes along

  1056. Hannah

  1057. keeps her words

  1058. and she hands

  1059. Samuel over

  1060. to be devoted

  1061. to God.

1062. They weren't that far away

  1063. so I suspect

  1064. they visited him

  1065. quite often

  1066. but he was devoted

  1067. to serving God

  1068. and every year

  1069. it says

  1070. they came back

  1071. as they came

  1072. to do give

  1073. their sacrifice

  1074. and they brought

  1075. Samuel

  1076. a new robe.

  1077. It was because

  1078. he was getting bigger

  1079. as time went on.

  1080. Every year

1081. a sign of their love

  1082. for Samuel

  1083. there was this robe

  1084. that they brought

  1085. along.

  1086. And every year

  1087. as I've said

  1088. they met with Eli

  1089. and Eli

  1090. as he saw

  1091. this lovely family

  1092. he wanted

  1093. to bless them

  1094. and to pray

  1095. for them

  1096. and God

  1097. honoured them.

  1098. He honoured Hannah

  1099. who had previously

  1100. been barren

  1101. she had another

  1102. five children

  1103. three sons

  1104. and two daughters.

  1105. A lovely family

  1106. devoted to God

  1107. keeping their promises

  1108. living for him.

1109. Good if we can have

  1110. families like that

  1111. rather than the family

  1112. of Eli

  1113. that we have families

  1114. where God's name

  1115. is honoured

  1116. and where we seek

  1117. to serve him

  1118. and to devote

  1119. our lives

  1120. and our family life

  1121. to him.

1122. And then we have Samuel.

  1123. Samuel is being prepared.

1124. It says in chapter 3

  1125. that Samuel

  1126. didn't yet know God.

  1127. I think that means

  1128. particularly Samuel

  1129. never had the personal

  1130. experience of God

  1131. speaking to him.

1132. and yet in chapter 2

  1133. Samuel is being prepared

  1134. for his service

  1135. in chapter 3

  1136. and beyond.

  1137. And these little reports

  1138. about Samuel

1139. are kind of progress reports

1140. on how he was getting on

  1141. in the temple.

  1142. So to begin with

1143. he was just helping Eli.

1144. He ministered before the Lord

  1145. under Eli.

1146. Then Eli kind of goes

  1147. out of the picture

  1148. in verse 18

  1149. it just says

  1150. Samuel was ministering

  1151. before the Lord.

  1152. Perhaps Samuel

  1153. by this stage

  1154. become a bit more

  1155. independent

1156. a bit more personal faith

  1157. and a bit more

  1158. knowing what it was

  1159. that God's will was

  1160. for him.

  1161. Verse 26

  1162. Samuel continued

  1163. to go in stature

  1164. and favour

  1165. with the Lord

  1166. and with people.

1167. As he learned from Eli

  1168. as he served God

  1169. in the temple

  1170. so he grew

  1171. he matured

  1172. he developed

  1173. and he became

1174. a good servant of God

1175. that people could look at

  1176. and they could say

1177. here is a good example

  1178. where Eli's sons

  1179. are very bad examples.

1180. And then in chapter 3

  1181. God starts speaking

  1182. to Samuel

  1183. and everything

  1184. that God says

  1185. to Samuel

  1186. comes about

  1187. and the people

  1188. recognise

  1189. there is

  1190. a great prophet

  1191. here.

  1192. We again

  1193. if we are parents

1194. or indeed as a church

1195. when we have so many

  1196. young children

  1197. among us

  1198. we need to really

  1199. care for

  1200. and nurture

  1201. our young

  1202. people.

  1203. We need to show

  1204. them an example

  1205. of what it is

  1206. to live for God

  1207. we need to teach

  1208. them God's word

  1209. simply

  1210. and faithfully

  1211. and seek to

  1212. encourage them

  1213. to serve

  1214. and to follow

  1215. and to grow

  1216. in their knowledge

  1217. of the Lord

  1218. Jesus.

  1219. Children must

  1220. never be seen

1221. as a bit of an extra

  1222. a bit of a nuisance

  1223. in church

  1224. something that we

  1225. yes it's good

  1226. whether there's

1227. good to have a bit

  1228. of life around

  1229. the church

  1230. but not really

  1231. that important.

  1232. Our children

  1233. are the future

  1234. of the church

  1235. they are those

  1236. who knows

  1237. who may have

  1238. gone to be

  1239. like Samuel

  1240. and to serve

  1241. God in similar

  1242. kind of ways

  1243. and to be great

  1244. men and women

  1245. of faith

  1246. and we need

  1247. as a church

  1248. to value them

  1249. and to look

  1250. after them

  1251. and to teach

  1252. them faithfully

  1253. the word

  1254. of God

  1255. to show them

  1256. that we care

  1257. for them

  1258. because God

  1259. cares for them

  1260. and we want

  1261. what is best

  1262. for them

  1263. from God

  1264. and then perhaps

  1265. it can be said

  1266. of them

  1267. that they grow

  1268. in stature

  1269. and favour

  1270. with the Lord

  1271. and his people

  1272. reminder here

  1273. I think isn't there

  1274. of the Lord Jesus

  1275. end of Luke's gospel

  1276. we know

  1277. we know very little

  1278. about Jesus' childhood

  1279. but one thing

  1280. we do know

  1281. the last verse

  1282. of Luke 2

  1283. the evangelist

  1284. records

  1285. Jesus grew

  1286. in wisdom

  1287. and stature

  1288. and in favour

  1289. with God

  1290. and man

  1291. very much

  1292. a reflection

  1293. of the same

  1294. kind of thing

  1295. as with Samuel

  1296. grew in wisdom

  1297. and stature

  1298. in favour

  1299. with God

  1300. and man

  1301. may our prayer

  1302. be that our

  1303. young people

  1304. in this church

  1305. may come to know

  1306. the Lord Jesus

  1307. for themselves

  1308. and may then

  1309. grow in wisdom

  1310. and stature

  1311. and in favour

  1312. with God

  1313. and man

  1314. let's pray

  1315. for them

  1316. let's

  1317. encourage

  1318. them

  1319. and so

  1320. we have

  1321. God

  1322. honoured

  1323. through Samuel

  1324. and his

  1325. family

  1326. let's finish

  1327. with Eric Liddow

  1328. Eric Liddow

  1329. centre just

  1330. around the corner

  1331. in Morningside

  1332. that's named

  1333. after

  1334. Eric Liddow

  1335. of course

  1336. was a very

  1337. famous athlete

  1338. also an

  1339. international rugby

  1340. player

  1341. but best known

  1342. as an athlete

  1343. and through

  1344. the film

  1345. Chariots of Fire

  1346. Eric Liddow

  1347. won the 400 metres

  1348. at the 1924

  1349. Olympics

  1350. in Paris

  1351. and there's a story

  1352. that says

  1353. Eric Liddow

  1354. is preparing

1355. to go to the track

  1356. for his 400 metres

  1357. final

  1358. that one of the

  1359. American masseurs

  1360. passed him a note

  1361. and that note says

  1362. in the old book

  1363. it says

  1364. he who honours me

  1365. I will honour

  1366. in other words

  1367. a quotation

  1368. from 1 Samuel

    1 Samuel 2 chapter mention

  1369. chapter 2

  1370. and that American

  1371. although on

  1372. an opposing side

  1373. in terms of

  1374. the Olympics

  1375. he recognised

  1376. that Eric Liddow

  1377. was someone

  1378. who loved God

  1379. who knew him

  1380. and who honoured him

  1381. in that particular

  1382. context of course

1383. it was that Eric Liddow

  1384. had refused to

  1385. run on a Sunday

  1386. so he'd given up

  1387. on his favourite event

  1388. the 100 metres

  1389. and had gone instead

  1390. for the event

  1391. the 400 metres

1392. and indeed you could say

  1393. that God honoured him

1394. as he won that event

  1395. and as he broke

  1396. the world record

  1397. but of course

  1398. Eric Liddow's story

  1399. didn't end there

  1400. after Eric Liddow

1401. had been to the Olympics

  1402. he did what he'd

  1403. always intended to do

1404. and he followed his parents

  1405. to the mission field

  1406. he went to China

  1407. and he served there

  1408. faithfully

  1409. for a good number

  1410. of years

  1411. and in the end

  1412. he ended up

  1413. in an internment camp

  1414. where he died

1415. at quite a young age

  1416. for Eric Liddow

  1417. athletics running

  1418. was important

  1419. it was something

  1420. he believed

1421. God had gifted him in

1422. and that because of that

  1423. that he should honour

  1424. God through it

  1425. but he wasn't looking

  1426. for glory

  1427. for himself

1428. and it wasn't so important

  1429. that having won

  1430. in 1924

  1431. he was thinking

1432. well I need to come back

  1433. in 1928

1434. or to go to some

  1435. other championships

  1436. and make a bigger

  1437. career of myself

  1438. as an athlete

  1439. Eric Liddow

  1440. wanted to put

  1441. God first

  1442. and to honour

  1443. God

  1444. in all he did

1445. and so it was more

  1446. important

  1447. than running

  1448. in the race

  1449. where he was felt

  1450. to have the best

  1451. chance

  1452. of winning

  1453. it was more important

  1454. than pursuing

1455. a career in this country

  1456. and perhaps having

  1457. even greater success

  1458. in athletics

  1459. or in rugby

  1460. or perhaps even

  1461. in a different sport

  1462. for Eric Liddow

  1463. the most important

  1464. thing

1465. was that in his life

  1466. he should

  1467. honour

  1468. God

  1469. and that's where

  1470. we should be

  1471. as well

  1472. that it's not

  1473. about the greed

  1474. of Hophni and Phinehas

  1475. it's certainly

  1476. not about

  1477. ignoring God's

  1478. will

  1479. and his way

  1480. and of bringing

  1481. others down

  1482. in their faith

  1483. rather like

  1484. Samuel

  1485. like Eric Liddow

  1486. like the Lord

  1487. Jesus

  1488. our greatest desire

  1489. should be

  1490. that God's name

  1491. is glorified

  1492. and that we serve

  1493. him

  1494. and that we live

  1495. for him

  1496. and that for me

  1497. is the challenge

  1498. of 1 Samuel 2

  1499. in my life

  1500. do I really

  1501. honour God

  1502. do I put God

  1503. first

  1504. or are there

  1505. lots of other

  1506. things that I put

  1507. ahead of them

  1508. that are to do

  1509. with my selfishness

  1510. and my ambition

  1511. for myself

  1512. and I challenge

  1513. all of us

  1514. as we go away

  1515. tonight

  1516. to think about

  1517. am I honouring

  1518. God

  1519. or are there

  1520. things that bring

  1521. horror to God's

  1522. heart

  1523. I would bring

  1524. horror to the

  1525. heart of others

  1526. if they knew

  1527. about them

  1528. about the sin

  1529. in my life

  1530. if there are

  1531. things that are

  1532. holding us back

  1533. let's confess

  1534. them before God

  1535. and let's go

  1536. ahead and live

  1537. for him

  1538. and serve him

  1539. and honour him

  1540. let's pray together

  1541. Father we thank you

  1542. for your word

  1543. we thank you

  1544. that even those

  1545. passages

  1546. where there is

  1547. judgment

  1548. where there is

  1549. evil

  1550. where there is

  1551. apparent darkness

  1552. yet we can see

  1553. you at work

  1554. and there are

  1555. things that we

  1556. can learn from

  1557. them

  1558. and we thank you

  1559. even in the

  1560. darkest days

  1561. even the most

  1562. difficult times

  1563. as was the case

  1564. as Samuel was

  1565. growing up

  1566. that you are

  1567. at work

  1568. often quietly

  1569. often unseen

  1570. at that point

  1571. but yet you are

  1572. raising up people

  1573. to serve you

1574. and to live for you

  1575. we bid you help

  1576. each of us

  1577. to be true

  1578. servants

  1579. of you

  1580. and of our

  1581. Lord

  1582. that we may

  1583. honour you

  1584. and so we know

  1585. that we are

  1586. never

  1587. you are never

  1588. any man's

  1589. debtor

  1590. and as we

  1591. seek to honour

  1592. you

  1593. that we will

  1594. receive back

  1595. much much more

  1596. than we could

  1597. ever give

  1598. to you

  1599. we thank you

  1600. for the great

  1601. grace that we've

  1602. received through

  1603. the Lord Jesus

  1604. and for the

  1605. daily grace

  1606. that we receive

  1607. from you

  1608. help us never

  1609. to take it

  1610. for granted

  1611. help us in our

  1612. lives to seek

  1613. to honour you

  1614. and to serve you

  1615. we thank you

  1616. for this time

  1617. together this evening

  1618. we thank you

  1619. for your word

  1620. and we pray

  1621. to you

  1622. bless it

  1623. to our hearts

  1624. and help us

  1625. to live for you

  1626. for our Lord

  1627. Jesus this week

1628. we ask in his name

  1629. Amen
