  1. Well, good morning everyone, and great to see you.

  2. If you've got a Bible, then please turn back to those verses that Violet read for us in Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  3. It says 1 to 8, actually we're going to be 9 to 14 this morning, that's where we're going to be.

  4. Hopefully as you came in you received a little bookmark, which is going to act as a sermon outline this morning,

  5. and also give us something really practical that we're going to do with this passage at the end of our time together.

  6. So grab your Bibles, grab the bookmark, and let's pray together.

  7. Colossians chapter 1, 9 to 14.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  8. Heavenly Father, we ask that you would help us now as we turn to your precious word,

  9. to know the leading of your Holy Spirit as he helps us to see something more of the greatness of your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  10. Father, would you instill in us that utter conviction that there is simply none like him.

  11. And so we pray in his powerful name. Amen.

  12. I don't know if you're a fan of The Apprentice.

  13. How many fans of The Apprentice?

  14. A few of us? Yeah?

  15. Yeah. So one of Alex and I's favourite programmes to watch on television.

  16. We love it so much that we actually watch it, and then we watch the...

  17. We watch the You're Fired programme afterwards, and I even caught Alex the other night watching the outtakes on his subtitles.

  18. So we are big fans of The Apprentice.

  19. So much so that this is the 14th series, and I think we've watched maybe about half of them.

  20. So I think we can count ourselves as pretty strong fans.

  21. As usual, this is the 14th series of the programme, and as usual there are some pretty confident, I think it's fair to say, characters who are on the show.

  22. And we were watching it the other night, and one of the people that caught my attention on it was this chap whose name is Coyote.

  23. Which is a great name, isn't it? Coyote.

  24. So after the programme finished, I went onto The Apprentice website, which is on the BBC, and I looked at his short biography on the BBC website.

  25. So this is what he says about himself, and why he thinks he's going to win.

  26. And as I read it to you, I want to ask you, whose glory is he on The Apprentice for?

  27. You ready for this quote? It's pretty special.

  28. And I know it's TV, okay, but still, you've come out with this.

  29. Look at this.

  30. I'm not here to razzle-dazzle and hit you with the buzzwords, like, I'm so motivated and I'm so passionate.

  31. Anyone can say those things.

  32. But I'm not anyone.

  33. I'm Coyote Damali.

  34. If you're not your own biggest fan, then who do you expect to be it for you?

  35. I thought that would have got at least a kind of laugh or something like that.

  36. I don't know.

  37. It's a funny thing to say about yourself.

  38. It's so strange, isn't it?

  39. And yet here it is in our world, a mindset.

  40. Now, here's the question I want to ask you this morning.

  41. Whoever you are here today, whatever's going on in your life, think about your life.

  42. Think about the things that you do.

  43. Whose glory are you in it for?

  44. Whose glory are you in it for?

  45. Whose smile do you crave?

  46. Whose opinion do you rate?

  47. Whose applause do you seek?

  48. Whose pleasure do you live for?

  49. So I think that's the question we're going to be confronted with this morning as we look at Paul's prayer.

  50. As we get back into this little letter that Paul wrote to this church in Colossae,

  51. what we're going to see is Paul prayed that these Christians would be marked by a radically different mindset.

  52. And the headline of Paul's prayer, the thing that he wants more than anything else for them,

  53. you'll see it at verse 10,

  54. that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way.

  55. That's what he wants for these Christians.

  56. That you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way.

  57. That's his heart for this church.

  58. He prays that their lives would be underpinned by an all-out commitment,

  59. not to live for themselves, but to please their Master and King, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  60. That they would have a desire stemming from a transformed heart,

  61. stemming from a deep love for him,

  62. that means in the everyday things of their lives,

  63. they're going to live for the glory and the praise, not of themselves, but for Jesus Christ.

  64. That's what he's praying.

  65. That's what he wants for this church.

  66. And so as we eavesdrop in on this prayer today,

  67. it's going to challenge us to ask ourselves if this is our mindset as we live our lives in this world.

  68. And it's going to equip us as to how we can live a life for God's glory

  69. and also how we can best pray for each other

  70. that we would be marked by a life that is praiseworthy of Jesus Christ.

  71. And I really hope it encourages us as well to love the Lord Jesus more

  72. and like we said last week, if you can remember last week,

  73. to grasp that we have a big Jesus who is worthy of all praise.

  74. So when it comes to prayer, verse 9,

  75. Paul wants them to know,

  76. remember writing to these Christians that he's probably, most likely never met,

  77. he wants them to know that he's praying for them.

  78. And do you see it in the text?

  79. Not just occasionally,

  80. not just when they happen to pop into his head when he's out at the shops,

  81. he's praying for them continually

  82. from house arrest in Rome.

  83. In fact, he's not stopped praying for them.

  84. Do you see it there?

  85. Remember, they're always on his mind,

  86. they're always in his heart,

  87. they're always in his prayers.

  88. You see, there's an incredible persistence

  89. and a relentlessness to Paul in his prayer life.

  90. Think about it, how encouraging do you find it

  91. when you hear somebody tell you that they are praying for you?

  92. I find that one of the most encouraging things in my life.

  93. How encouraging must this have been

  94. for these Colossian Christians to read?

  95. Paul, Paul, he's praying for us all the time.

  96. And he's praying that our lives would please the Lord.

  97. And how are they going to do that, verse 9?

  98. By being filled.

  99. Do you see?

  100. Verse 9, Paul prays that God would fill them.

  101. Popular, isn't it, in our society today

  102. to hear people talk about how emptying your mind

  103. is the key to spiritual progress in life?

  104. I read a quote by Bruce Lee recently,

  105. who writes in his book, Wisdom for Daily Living,

  106. giving advice on how an individual can grow.

  107. He says this,

  108. Empty your mind,

  109. Be formless,

  110. Be shapeless,

  111. Like water.

  112. Be water, my friends.

  113. Be water.

  114. Now I've read that about a hundred times

  115. since I read it on Tuesday,

  116. and I still cannot understand what he's saying.

  117. Be water, my friends.

  118. Be water.

  119. What?

  120. But he's a pretty decent martial arts,

  121. from what I gather,

  122. so I'll probably keep up to myself.

  123. But do you see how Paul is saying

  124. the exact opposite of what Bruce Lee is saying?

  125. The key to these Christians growing

  126. and developing and maturing

  127. is not by the emptying of their minds,

  128. but rather, on the contrary,

  129. it's by the filling of their minds.

  130. That's how they're going to grow.

  131. That's what Paul prays.

  132. More particularly,

  133. that God would fill their minds,

  134. you see in the text,

  135. with the knowledge of his will.

  136. That the Spirit,

  137. as he lives in them,

  138. as God's chosen and holy people,

  139. set apart for him,

  140. as they encounter God and his word,

  141. as they get a deeper grasp of the Lord Jesus,

  142. that they would know something

  143. of the sheer enormity

  144. of what God has done for them,

  145. and what he calls them to live like

  146. is his people.

  147. That's what he prays.

  148. And in so doing,

  149. that they would come to understand

  150. what a life that is pleasing to him

  151. looks like.

  152. It was Charles Spurgeon

  153. who famously said,

  154. we hope to understand the truth better,

  155. but mark this,

  156. we shall never discover better truth.

  157. So let me ask you this morning,

  158. are you growing in your knowledge

  159. of the Lord?

  160. Are you getting to know him better

  161. as he has revealed himself in his word?

  162. And is that knowledge,

  163. is it leading to the transformation

  164. of your mind?

  165. That's why I love to sing

  166. the chorus that we sometimes sing

  167. before we come to God's word.

  168. We sing,

  169. Speak, O Lord,

  170. and renew our minds.

  171. Help us grasp the heights

  172. of your plans for us.

  173. truths unchanged

  174. since the dawn of time

  175. that will echo down

  176. through eternity.

  177. That's what Paul is praying for,

  178. that they would be transformed

  179. by the renewing of their minds,

  180. that they would be filled,

  181. that God would fill them.

  182. And I think he tells them that

  183. for their encouragement, yes,

  184. but also he wants them

  185. to give them a template

  186. as to how they can pray

  187. for themselves,

  188. but also how they can pray

  189. for one another.

  190. The brothers and sisters,

  191. that they too

  192. would live a life

  193. worthy of the Lord

  194. and please him

  195. in every way.

  196. Do you begin to see

  197. how this is so relevant for us

  198. today as a church family?

  199. And what Paul does next

  200. is he doesn't leave them

  201. to guess what a life-pleasing

  202. to the Lord looks like.

  203. He shows them

  204. and he tells them

  205. specifically what he's praying for.

  206. And you'll notice in the text

  207. from halfway through verse 10,

  208. there's four verbs,

  209. four doing words.

  210. And so all I want to do

  211. in the time that we have left

  212. this morning

  213. is I want to look at these

  214. four doing words together.

  215. That's how I remember

  216. what a verb is.

  217. I don't know about you, right?

  218. I'm looking at it.

  219. I'm a teacher here.

  220. That's how I remember.

  221. It's a doing word.

  222. It's an active word.

  223. He uses four verbs.

  224. But we're going to look

  225. at these together

  226. and then I've got something

  227. really practical for us

  228. to do this week

  229. as we seek to put this

  230. into practice in our lives.

  231. You ready for the first verb?

  232. The first doing word?

  233. Here's the first doing word.

  234. First, verse 10,

  235. he prays that they would be bearing.

  236. He's praying that in their lives

  237. they would be producing fruit.

  238. They would be bearing fruit.

  239. Because that is how

  240. the watching world

  241. is going to know

  242. that Jesus has truly

  243. taken hold of their lives

  244. and that they live in him

  245. and he lives in them

  246. and they know it

  247. because they can see

  248. the fruit of a transformed life.

  249. Because beforehand,

  250. their lives,

  251. they were just like

  252. our friend and the apprentice.

  253. They lived for their own glory.

  254. But God has transformed

  255. their lives by his grace

  256. and now that they live

  257. for his glory.

  258. Because that's what God

  259. has done, isn't it?

  260. In the lives of every believer.

  261. Given us new hearts.

  262. That's what we read

  263. in Jeremiah earlier.

  264. He's given us new hearts.

  265. We can know him.

  266. And the Holy Spirit

  267. as he lives inside of us,

  268. he makes us hungry

  269. for good works

  270. that are going to put

  271. the glory of our Father

  272. on full display

  273. to the watching world.

  274. I don't know if you watched

  275. the BBC documentary

  276. this week.

  277. I realize I've quoted

  278. the BBC twice here.

  279. There are other channels

  280. available, but BBC.

  281. And they highlighted

  282. the work of Christians

  283. against poverty.

  284. Did anyone see

  285. that documentary?

  286. No?

  287. So it's on iPlayer.

  288. It's a wonderful watch.

  289. And they just went around

  290. with a camera crew

  291. and they followed

  292. the work of Christians

  293. against poverty

  294. up and down the UK.

  295. Fascinating documentary

  296. into the work.

  297. Did you know

  298. that according to

  299. a study that was done

  300. at the London School

  301. of Economics,

  302. Christians Against Poverty,

  303. their work,

  304. it contributes

  305. 31.5 million pounds

  306. to our economy

  307. each year.

  308. They have 6,000

  309. Christian volunteers,

  310. people who bought

  311. into the vision

  312. and are motivated

  313. to share the love

  314. and the message

  315. of Jesus Christ

  316. with people

  317. in word and in deed.

  318. 6,000 volunteers

  319. they've got.

  320. And it's estimated

  321. that CAP helped

  322. 10 people out of debt

  323. every day.

  324. On their website,

  325. Sharon,

  326. Sharon,

  327. one of their clients,

  328. says this,

  329. CAP has given me

  330. back my husband,

  331. my family,

  332. my life,

  333. and my faith,

  334. which my debt

  335. had taken hostage.

  336. This is Christians

  337. Against Poverty

  338. that we saw this week

  339. in the news.

  340. What a wonderful example

  341. of what it means

  342. to bear fruit

  343. for the glory

  344. of the Lord Jesus.

  345. And I was with

  346. some students

  347. from Heriot-Watsey

  348. on Thursday night

  349. and we were looking

  350. at that passage

  351. in 1 Peter 2

  352. that though the world

  353. accuses you

  354. of doing wrong,

  355. they will see

  356. your good deeds

  357. and they will glorify

  358. God on the day

  359. he visits us.

  360. That's what their

  361. prayer as a CU

  362. was for them.

  363. And it's my prayer

  364. for us as a church

  365. that we would be

  366. marked by good works.

  367. That's what he's praying

  368. for this Colossian community,

  369. that they would be

  370. on the front foot

  371. when it comes

  372. to good works

  373. that bring glory

  374. to the Lord Jesus Christ

  375. in the eyes

  376. of the watching world.

  377. And it's not

  378. an encouraging thought

  379. today, friends,

  380. that God is pleased

  381. with good works

  382. that his people

  383. do for his glory

  384. as they live

  385. for an audience

  386. of one.

  387. Isn't it not

  388. a tremendously

  389. wonderful thought

  390. that I can please

  391. the Lord Jesus

  392. in my everyday,

  393. mundane,

  394. nothing spectacular,

  395. going through the mill,

  396. everything ordinary life?

  397. I can bring him

  398. glory through that.

  399. Isn't it?

  400. And when you begin

  401. to see life like that,

  402. as Paul prays here,

  403. do you see how

  404. our whole lives

  405. become worship to him?

  406. Paul prays

  407. that these Colossians

  408. would be bearing

  409. in their lives.

  410. Here's the second verb,

  411. the second thing

  412. that he prays for,

  413. verse 10,

  414. they're growing.

  415. Paul prays

  416. that they would grow,

  417. that they would mature,

  418. that they would develop,

  419. that they would increase

  420. in what?

  421. The knowledge of God.

  422. Not,

  423. not the right

  424. of the super spiritual

  425. as the false teachers

  426. behind this letter

  427. are probably teaching,

  428. but the privilege

  429. of every single Christian

  430. that we can grow

  431. in our knowledge

  432. of our Father.

  433. He prays

  434. and asks that God,

  435. asks God

  436. that these believers

  437. would come to know him better.

  438. Who he is,

  439. what he's like,

  440. what he's done,

  441. what he's doing.

  442. Isn't that a wonderful thought?

  443. That God has made himself

  444. knowable?

  445. The God who created

  446. all things

  447. has made himself

  448. knowable.

  449. He's done so

  450. most fully

  451. in the person

  452. of his son Jesus Christ

  453. who we'll see next week

  454. is the image

  455. of the invisible God

  456. and he's done so

  457. through his words.

  458. That's how we can know God.

  459. Let me ask you,

  460. what role does God's word

  461. play in your daily life?

  462. Have you got a hunger

  463. to know him?

  464. A hunger for his words?

  465. J.I. Parker,

  466. theologian,

  467. says this,

  468. if I were the devil,

  469. which always gets your attention

  470. in a quote,

  471. doesn't it?

  472. If I were the devil,

  473. one of my first aims

  474. would be to stop Christians

  475. from reading the Bible.

  476. Evangelist Vance Herver,

  477. a Bible that is falling apart

  478. usually belongs

  479. to someone who isn't.

  480. Paul prays

  481. that these Christians

  482. would be growing,

  483. but not simply

  484. just in facts

  485. about God.

  486. He prays

  487. that they would grow

  488. in a personal

  489. and intimate knowledge

  490. of their father.

  491. You know,

  492. the late Anglican minister

  493. and lecturer,

  494. John Stott,

  495. he was once asked

  496. what his biggest fear

  497. for his students was.

  498. So the students

  499. that would come

  500. to study under him.

  501. And he always said

  502. that his biggest fear

  503. was that many

  504. of his students

  505. would leave

  506. with a doctorate

  507. in Jesus Christ,

  508. but they wouldn't leave

  509. as disciples

  510. of Jesus Christ.

  511. In other words,

  512. they would go

  513. from talking about God

  514. in the second person

  515. to the third person.

  516. Paul is praying here

  517. that these Christians

  518. would grow

  519. in their knowledge,

  520. intimate,

  521. relational knowledge

  522. of God.

  523. Let me ask you,

  524. just growing,

  525. does it describe

  526. your Christian walk today?

  527. Or would you pick a word

  528. more like static

  529. or comfortable

  530. or lukewarm?

  531. It would be a wonderful thing

  532. to pray this morning,

  533. wouldn't it,

  534. that today

  535. we would be marked

  536. by this growing.

  537. Grab someone today

  538. and pray with them

  539. that that would be

  540. true for you.

  541. Ask them to pray

  542. for you this week.

  543. Here's the third verb,

  544. the third thing

  545. that Paul prays for,

  546. verse 11,

  547. that they would be being,

  548. being strengthened.

  549. Do you see?

  550. That they would know

  551. the power of God

  552. in their lives,

  553. the same power

  554. that we were just

  555. singing about

  556. that raised Jesus

  557. from the grave

  558. would be at work

  559. in their lives,

  560. giving them strength.

  561. And what is that power

  562. going to enable them

  563. to do?

  564. Well,

  565. somewhat surprisingly,

  566. Paul tells them

  567. that the power of God

  568. at work in their lives

  569. won't manifest itself

  570. in spectacular signs,

  571. which I'm sure some

  572. in the background

  573. of this letter

  574. are saying.

  575. The power of God

  576. at work in their lives

  577. is going to manifest itself

  578. in those wonderful

  579. two words,

  580. endurance

  581. and patience.

  582. Endurance

  583. and patience.

  584. That God

  585. would give them

  586. the power

  587. in the Christian life

  588. to just keep on going,

  589. keep on enduring,

  590. keep on persevering,

  591. keep on running

  592. the Christian race.

  593. That he would give them

  594. the power

  595. to stay the course,

  596. to go the distance

  597. and have their eyes

  598. fixed on

  599. everything that Jesus

  600. has accomplished

  601. for them

  602. and have their eyes

  603. and their hearts

  604. fixed on the glory

  605. that is ahead of them

  606. because of Jesus Christ.

  607. No matter how hard

  608. life gets in the presence,

  609. that's what he's praying for.

  610. Endurance

  611. patience

  612. and patience.

  613. I was reading this week

  614. about one of America's

  615. greatest ever hymn writers

  616. whose name was

  617. Annie J. Flint.

  618. I don't know if you've ever

  619. heard of Annie J. Flint.

  620. Her life story

  621. was one of great suffering.

  622. She was orphaned

  623. and adopted

  624. at a very young age.

  625. She suffered from

  626. rheumatoid arthritis

  627. which plagued her

  628. most of her life.

  629. She had cancer

  630. that was eating

  631. inside of her,

  632. eating away

  633. and as she grew older,

  634. blindness was beginning

  635. to set in

  636. and she spent

  637. the last few

  638. years of her life

  639. in bed covered

  640. in sores.

  641. But she was a woman

  642. of deep faith

  643. and a saint

  644. whose life

  645. was marked

  646. by great endurance.

  647. And one of the most

  648. beautiful hymns

  649. she ever wrote

  650. went like this.

  651. When we have exhausted

  652. our store of endurance,

  653. when our strength

  654. has failed

  655. and the day

  656. is half done,

  657. when we reach

  658. the end

  659. of our hoarded

  660. resources,

  661. our Father's

  662. full giving

  663. has only begun.

  664. Fear not

  665. that your needs

  666. will exceed

  667. his provision.

  668. Our God

  669. ever yearns

  670. his resources

  671. to share,

  672. so lean hard

  673. on his arm

  674. everlasting

  675. availing.

  676. The Father,

  677. both you

  678. and your load

  679. will up bear.

  680. It's not a

  681. wonderful hymn

  682. considering the

  683. woman who penned

  684. it and who

  685. loved it

  686. and who lived

  687. it and who

  688. believed it,

  689. that God's

  690. provision

  691. will never,

  692. we will never

  693. out,

  694. our needs

  695. will never

  696. exceed his

  697. provision.

  698. That's what she's

  699. saying in our

  700. life.

  701. And on Thursday

  702. we celebrated the

  703. life of our dear

  704. sister Elma

  705. at our funeral.

  706. At the beginning

  707. of the day I went

  708. to Derek's house

  709. and with the rest

  710. of the family

  711. together we read

  712. Psalm 46.

  713. That our God

  714. is a refuge

  715. and a strength

  716. and he's an

  717. ever-present help

  718. in times of

  719. trouble.

  720. And we spent

  721. the day celebrating

  722. that Elma knew

  723. the truth of that

  724. psalm and that

  725. despite her

  726. suffering,

  727. her faith was

  728. resolute and she

  729. was a saint who

  730. was marked by,

  731. and this came

  732. across so clearly,

  733. by great endurance

  734. and great patience.

  735. And for her

  736. it's now far

  737. better.

  738. You see,

  739. that's what he's

  740. praying that

  741. Christians would

  742. be marked by.

  743. Endurance

  744. and patience.

  745. That God

  746. wouldn't take them

  747. around hard times,

  748. but rather they

  749. would know their

  750. father more as

  751. he gives them

  752. the power and

  753. as he takes them

  754. through hard times.

  755. See,

  756. Paul prays that

  757. they would be

  758. marked by endurance

  759. and a patience,

  760. one that puts on

  761. display to the

  762. world that there's

  763. something far

  764. bigger that we're

  765. living for in life

  766. than just material

  767. stuff.

  768. Paul prays that

  769. they would be

  770. being,

  771. finally he prays

  772. that,

  773. verse 12,

  774. that they would

  775. be giving.

  776. He prays that

  777. their lives would

  778. be marked by

  779. thanksgiving,

  780. and that their

  781. joy would be

  782. derived not from

  783. the changing up

  784. and down

  785. circumstances of

  786. their lives,

  787. but a joy that

  788. is steadfast because

  789. it's derived from

  790. the God that

  791. they worship and

  792. the God who

  793. will never change.

  794. God has

  795. qualified them.

  796. Do you see that

  797. language in the

  798. text?

  799. He's qualified

  800. them.

  801. Let me ask you,

  802. when was the

  803. last time you

  804. qualified for

  805. something?

  806. Think about it

  807. in your life,

  808. when was the

  809. last time you

  810. qualified for

  811. something?

  812. I had my

  813. mom on the

  814. phone the other

  815. day and she

  816. was thrilled that

  817. my dad now

  818. qualifies for a

  819. free bus pass.

  820. That's what he

  821. qualified for.

  822. It's amazing,

  823. isn't it,

  824. how excited Scots

  825. get about free

  826. things.

  827. That was my

  828. mom.

  829. But God has

  830. qualified you,

  831. says Paul.

  832. It's kind of

  833. what the kids

  834. talk was about,

  835. wasn't it?

  836. God's qualified

  837. you, not for

  838. the final of

  839. the egg and

  840. spoon race.

  841. He's qualified

  842. you for him.

  843. For him.

  844. The holy and

  845. righteous God.

  846. Think about

  847. that.

  848. How can I

  849. qualify for him?

  850. The only thing

  851. that I've

  852. qualified myself

  853. for is his

  854. wrath, his

  855. righteous anger

  856. against my

  857. sin against

  858. him.

  859. That's the

  860. only thing

  861. that I've

  862. qualified myself

  863. for.

  864. Only one

  865. person deserved

  866. to qualify for

  867. him.

  868. And that was

  869. Jesus.

  870. But Jesus

  871. dealt with my

  872. sin on the

  873. cross.

  874. He took the

  875. punishment that

  876. I deserved

  877. upon myself.

  878. And I'm

  879. accredited with

  880. his righteousness.

  881. Righteousness

  882. just being his

  883. perfect, God-

  884. glorifying,

  885. obedient life.

  886. And when

  887. God looks at

  888. me now, he

  889. sees my

  890. life as

  891. being hidden

  892. in Christ.

  893. That's just

  894. what God has

  895. done for us.

  896. He's qualified

  897. us.

  898. Do you see

  899. that?

  900. They didn't

  901. qualify

  902. themselves.

  903. God has

  904. qualified them

  905. for a race

  906. that they had

  907. absolutely no

  908. interest in

  909. running.

  910. And God has

  911. won for them

  912. through Christ

  913. a prize that

  914. they had no

  915. interest in

  916. getting.

  917. And a

  918. prize that on

  919. their own,

  920. they had no

  921. chance of

  922. winning.

  923. He's qualified

  924. them for

  925. himself.

  926. That's the

  927. gift of the

  928. gospel, isn't

  929. it?

  930. Not stuff.

  931. It's God.

  932. And the hope

  933. of being with

  934. him in heaven

  935. where with the

  936. rest of God's

  937. ransomed people,

  938. we have an

  939. inheritance before

  940. us that is far

  941. greater than we

  942. will ever begin

  943. to comprehend

  944. down here.

  945. What incredible

  946. grace.

  947. And later in

  948. chapter 2,

  949. speaking about the

  950. false teachers,

  951. Paul will say,

  952. do not let them

  953. disqualify you

  954. for something

  955. that God has

  956. qualified you

  957. for.

  958. Do not let

  959. them disqualify

  960. you.

  961. God's qualified

  962. you and he's

  963. rescued you

  964. from the domain

  965. of darkness.

  966. That's where

  967. they were before.

  968. Living like

  969. everyone else in

  970. the world,

  971. chasing the same

  972. dreams,

  973. thinking the

  974. same thoughts,

  975. captive to

  976. their sin,

  977. but Jesus

  978. broke in.

  979. He broke

  980. into their

  981. lives.

  982. He smashed

  983. in and he

  984. brought them.

  985. Do you see

  986. the language?

  987. He brought

  988. them.

  989. Think about

  990. it.

  991. It's like

  992. a firefighter

  993. rescuing

  994. a child

  995. from a

  996. burning

  997. building

  998. and taking

  999. them to

  1000. safety.

  1001. That's the

  1002. imagery here.

  1003. God has

  1004. brought them

  1005. out of the

  1006. darkness

  1007. and he's

  1008. placed them

  1009. with sins

  1010. forgiven and

  1011. freedom

  1012. purchased

  1013. into the

  1014. kingdom of

  1015. light of

  1016. the son

  1017. that he

  1018. loves.

  1019. That's what

  1020. God has

  1021. done for

  1022. his people.

  1023. What an

  1024. incredible

  1025. thing that

  1026. God has

  1027. done for

  1028. his people

  1029. in the

  1030. gospel.

  1031. Paul prays

  1032. that these

  1033. Christians would

  1034. be bearing,

  1035. growing,

  1036. being,

  1037. and giving.

  1038. These are the

  1039. things that

  1040. will please

  1041. their master

  1042. Jesus Christ.

  1043. So let me ask

  1044. you as we work

  1045. towards a close

  1046. this morning,

  1047. I wonder as

  1048. you, as you

  1049. read Paul's

  1050. prayer here,

  1051. how it

  1052. challenges

  1053. your prayer

  1054. life.

  1055. not just

  1056. your prayer

  1057. life, but

  1058. our prayer

  1059. life.

  1060. Because this

  1061. has greatly

  1062. challenged me

  1063. as I studied

  1064. it this week.

  1065. As I thought

  1066. about how

  1067. often my

  1068. prayers are

  1069. simply requests

  1070. to God

  1071. for things

  1072. in my life

  1073. and things

  1074. in others'

  1075. lives to

  1076. get easier

  1077. and to get

  1078. better.

  1079. Now friends,

  1080. there is

  1081. nothing wrong

  1082. with praying

  1083. those things,

  1084. and because we

  1085. love each other,

  1086. we should be

  1087. praying those

  1088. things.

  1089. But if

  1090. that's all

  1091. we're praying,

  1092. then I think

  1093. we might be

  1094. missing it.

  1095. So here's my

  1096. challenge as we

  1097. work, as we

  1098. come to a close

  1099. this morning.

  1100. Hopefully you

  1101. got a prayer

  1102. sheet on your

  1103. way in as you

  1104. came in this

  1105. morning.

  1106. And you'll see

  1107. at the bottom

  1108. of it, if you

  1109. have it there,

  1110. it just says,

  1111. I'm praying

  1112. for.

  1113. I'm praying

  1114. for, it's all

  1115. it says.

  1116. So here's what

  1117. I want you to

  1118. do before you

  1119. go this morning.

  1120. I want you to

  1121. write down the

  1122. names of three

  1123. people down there

  1124. that you're going

  1125. to pray for

  1126. this week.

  1127. And I want you

  1128. to find them

  1129. this morning.

  1130. I want you to

  1131. let them know

  1132. that you're

  1133. praying for

  1134. them, and

  1135. you're going

  1136. to commit to

  1137. praying for

  1138. them, and

  1139. you're going

  1140. to pray, this

  1141. is how my

  1142. mind works,

  1143. okay, you're

  1144. going to pray

  1145. the BGs for

  1146. them.

  1147. Yeah?

  1148. You're going

  1149. to pray that

  1150. they would be

  1151. bearing fruit

  1152. this week.

  1153. I'm going to

  1154. pray that you

  1155. would be growing

  1156. in your knowledge

  1157. of God this

  1158. week, that he

  1159. would give you

  1160. wisdom to know

  1161. how to act in

  1162. every single

  1163. situation.

  1164. I'm going to

  1165. pray that you

  1166. will be strengthened

  1167. by God in your

  1168. life so that when

  1169. tough times come,

  1170. and they will

  1171. come, you will

  1172. have the endurance

  1173. and the patience

  1174. by God's power to

  1175. keep on going, and

  1176. I'm going to pray

  1177. that your life would

  1178. be marked by

  1179. thanksgiving, and

  1180. the Holy Spirit as

  1181. he works in your

  1182. life would make

  1183. what Jesus has

  1184. done for you a

  1185. source of constant

  1186. joy.

  1187. and overall, I'm

  1188. going to pray for

  1189. you, that your

  1190. life this week, you

  1191. would know and

1192. live a life that is

  1193. fully pleasing to

  1194. God.

  1195. Are you up for

  1196. that?

  1197. Yeah?

  1198. A few of you

  1199. nodded.

  1200. Yeah, let's do it

  1201. this week.

  1202. How counter-cultural

  1203. would that be for

  1204. us?

  1205. How, do you not

  1206. think that would

  1207. change things if we

  1208. began to pray for

  1209. each other like that?

  1210. That we would be

  1211. bearing and growing

  1212. and being and giving

  1213. as a community

  1214. together this

  1215. morning.

  1216. There's your BG's

  1217. challenge, okay?

  1218. Take it up.

1219. We'll all take it up

  1220. this week.

  1221. Find three people

  1222. this morning and

  1223. say, I'm going to

  1224. commit to praying for

  1225. you this week.

  1226. As we close, here's

  1227. another quote from

  1228. The Apprentice that

1229. I read this week, and

  1230. it's just as good.

1231. I have the beauty and

  1232. the brains.

  1233. Typically, people only

1234. have one, but I was

  1235. blessed with both in

  1236. abundance.

  1237. Friends, Paul is

  1238. saying to these

  1239. Christians and

  1240. Colossians, he's

  1241. praying that they

1242. would be marked by a

  1243. completely different

  1244. mindset, and that

  1245. they would be a

  1246. people who live not

  1247. for their own glory,

1248. that they would be a

  1249. people who are marked

  1250. by a passion and a

  1251. love to live their

1252. lives for the glory of

  1253. the Savior and King

  1254. Jesus Christ who has

  1255. saved them.

  1256. Paul prays that they

1257. would be marked by a

  1258. life that is worthy

1259. of the Lord and a

  1260. life that pleases Him

  1261. in every way.

  1262. Valley of Vision, let

  1263. me close with this

  1264. prayer from the Valley

  1265. of Vision.

  1266. It's also a song that

  1267. we sing sometimes

  1268. here.

1269. Help me now to live a

  1270. life that's dependent

  1271. on your grace.

  1272. Keep my heart and

1273. guard my soul from the

  1274. evils that I face.

1275. You are worthy to be

  1276. praised with my every

  1277. thought and deed.

  1278. O great God of

  1279. highest heaven, glorify

  1280. your name through me.

  1281. Let's make that our

  1282. prayer this week.

1283. Let me pray as we

  1284. close.

  1285. Heavenly Father, we

1286. thank you so much for

  1287. today.

1288. And we ask this week

1289. that you would, in our

1290. lives, help us to be

  1291. people that glorify you

1292. and who live for your

  1293. pleasure alone.

1294. That we would be your

1295. people who are marked by

  1296. an overflowing love for

  1297. you.

1298. And Father God, by your

  1299. spirit and through your

1300. son, would you help us

1301. to get to know you

  1302. better?

  1303. Father, thank you for

1304. the great love which you

  1305. have shown us.

1306. And so we praise you and

1307. we pray to you knowing

1308. that you hear us because

1309. we pray in Jesus' name.

  1310. Amen.
