  1. Good to see you all here this evening. Today, this evening, I'll be preaching on 1 Samuel chapter 12, continuing our series on Samuel.

    1 Samuel 12 chapter mention

  2. So, back when I was in school, I did the Duke of Edinburgh's award, and as part of that, as you might know, you have to go on camping trips,

  3. which has various results, sending a bunch of school kids out into the wilderness.

  4. And one of these trips we went on was near the Brig of Turk, and we came at a bit of a crossroads on our journey this day.

  5. And we'd just walked up a hillside, and we were at a crossroads. We had a decision to make, and it was either go to the southeast,

  6. and cross this moor, and go the wrong way, essentially, or go to the southwest, and go through a sort of valley,

  7. and go the right way. And if we went across the moor, we would go the wrong way, and we would add a few hours,

  8. at least, onto our journey. But, obviously, going the right way, we would arrive on time.

  9. I can read a map and use a compass, so I would say, no, we should definitely go to the southwest,

  10. look where the map's pointing in the compass, and look at where the route's going.

  11. Well, my friend said, no, we should go to the southeast, it's definitely towards the southeast, we should definitely go to the right.

  12. So, everybody doubted me,

  13. not that this is a big-headed thing,

  14. and we followed my friend, and we went the wrong way,

  15. and we ended up walking a few extra hours,

  16. and we had to walk through this moor,

  17. through the heather and the bracken,

  18. and then we had to walk down a hillside,

  19. covered in old, dead, decaying trees,

  20. and made very slow and painful progress,

  21. as we walked through this thicket of

  22. dead, brittle

  23. branches and boughs.

  24. And eventually,

  25. once we had done all this,

  26. and walked down this hillside,

  27. we got back on to the road,

  28. and made our way back to

  29. the correct route.

  30. But because we made this

  31. wrong choice,

  32. because we came at this

  33. juncture in the road,

  34. and made the wrong choice,

  35. it added ours,

  36. and a lot of pain,

  37. onto our journey.

  38. And in this chapter,

  39. we see

  40. the Israelites come to a crossroads as well.

  41. They are presented with a choice to make.

  42. They can go

  43. with the Lord,

  44. and follow the Lord,

  45. or they can go their own way,

  46. and reject the Lord.

  47. They've committed a great sin,

  48. by rejecting God as their king.

  49. Despite the fact

  50. he saved Israel

  51. many times,

  52. and blessed them,

  53. they can continue to reject God,

  54. and be destroyed,

  55. or they can go in the right direction,

  56. obey,

  57. follow,

  58. and worship God.

  59. Put away their idols,

  60. repent of their arrogance and pride,

  61. and make Him their priority,

  62. and do what is right.

  63. Just like Israel,

  64. we have this ongoing decision

  65. to make as a church,

  66. and as individuals as well.

  67. The choice to either follow

  68. our own sinful,

  69. and selfish desires,

  70. and worship them,

  71. or,

  72. we can repent,

  73. and we can follow,

  74. not our own way,

  75. but follow the Lord's way.

  76. This chapter marks

  77. the end of an era,

  78. the end of the period

  79. of the judges.

  80. Samuel is the last judge,

  81. and as God's appointed leader

  82. of the people

  83. has gathered them together

  84. to address them

  85. as Saul takes over

  86. as Israel's king.

  87. In the emergency

  88. in the previous chapter,

  89. in chapter 11,

  90. with Nahash at Jabesh Gilead,

  91. the Israelites didn't call

  92. for God to deliver them,

  93. but a king.

  94. And Saul did deliver them,

  95. this time.

  96. Their confidence in Saul,

  97. in themselves,

  98. and in their own nation,

  99. is founded on one solitary incident

  100. they ascribe to him,

  101. to Saul,

  102. rather than Saul

  103. being used by God

  104. to deliver Israel

  105. from their enemies.

  106. And as we read

  107. the chapter,

  108. it almost seems like

  109. a report from a courtroom,

  110. a courtroom that's

  111. back to front,

  112. where the defendant

  113. has put

  114. the judge

  115. in the dock

  116. and is judging them,

  117. even in the face

  118. of their own guilt.

  119. So in verses 1 to 5,

  120. Samuel gives an account

  121. of his leadership

  122. of Israel under the Lord.

  123. Samuel asked the Israelites,

  124. as we heard,

  125. in front of God

  126. and the new king Saul,

  127. if he had cheated anyone,

  128. stolen from anyone,

  129. or been an unjust judge.

  130. In verse 3,

  131. when Samuel asked them

  132. whose donkey

  133. or oxen he had taken,

  134. this is set up

  135. in contrast

  136. to the king

  137. taking the livestock

  138. of the people

  139. for his own use,

  140. as we heard about

  141. from chapter 8.

  142. In verse 5,

  143. Samuel is vindicated

  144. as a just ruler

  145. and by the Israelites

  146. vindicating Samuel,

  147. they also vindicate

  148. the Lord

  149. as Samuel's leadership

  150. comes from the Lord

  151. and Samuel's good deeds

  152. are from the Lord.

  153. So Samuel's been faithful

  154. because he followed

  155. the Lord

  156. and not his own way

  157. and not his own desires.

  158. Samuel has remembered

  159. the Lord,

  160. everything he's done

  161. for him and Israel

  162. and followed the Lord

  163. faithfully.

  164. And for verses 6 to 15,

  165. Samuel goes on the offensive

  166. and confronts Israel

  167. with everything God

  168. has done for them

  169. despite their sin.

  170. In verse 7,

  171. Samuel says to all Israel,

  172. Now then,

  173. stand here,

  174. I am going to confront you

  175. with evidence

  176. before the Lord

  177. as to all the righteous acts

  178. performed

  179. by the Lord

  180. for you

  181. and your ancestors.

  182. As we read,

  183. these verses

  184. contain all the righteous

  185. deeds of God

  186. and his faithfulness

  187. to his rebellious people,

  188. Israel.

  189. They are reminded

  190. of the countless times

  191. the Lord has led them,

  192. delivered them,

  193. cared for them

  194. and had mercy on them.

  195. Israel perhaps thought

  196. that they would hear

  197. that God had mistreated

  198. them in some way

  199. or abandoned them

  200. in their hour of need

  201. to their enemies.

  202. However,

  203. from verse 8,

  204. God is shown to be

  205. the loving King of Israel

  206. who heard his people's

  207. cries for help

  208. and always delivered them

  209. out of their enemies' hands.

  210. In verse 9,

  211. we read,

  212. Because of all this

  213. and the cause of all

  214. Israel's other sins,

  215. they forgot the Lord,

  216. their God.

  217. They forgot the Lord,

  218. their God.

  219. This is,

  220. the Israelites are shown

  221. beyond a shadow of a doubt

  222. that the Lord

  223. is worthy to be followed

  224. and in fact

  225. is the only one

  226. worth following.

  227. And this,

  228. they forgot the Lord,

  229. their God,

  230. is a very serious thing

  231. for anyone to say,

  232. both for the Israelites

  233. then

  234. and their day

  235. but also for us now.

  236. And are we inclined

  237. to forget

  238. what the Lord

  239. has done for us?

  240. And although I've

  241. criticized Israel here

  242. strongly,

  243. we should see ourselves

  244. in their midst

  245. at Gilgal,

  246. hearing from Samuel,

  247. telling them

  248. and us

  249. of the Lord's

  250. faithfulness

  251. and mercy

  252. and his righteous deeds

  253. for us.

  254. The Israelites

  255. had lost sight of God

  256. and who they were

  257. in relationship to God

  258. and can we be

  259. accused of the same?

  260. Yes.

  261. Do we forget God

  262. and who he is?

  263. Yes.

  264. Each one of us

  265. is a fallen,

  266. broken and sinful

  267. human being

  268. and even though

  269. we have the word

  270. of God here

  271. as a constant reminder

  272. of God's faithfulness

  273. and redemption

  274. all through the Bible,

  275. we still often

  276. go astray

  277. and chase after idols

  278. and follow after

  279. our own way.

  280. Just like Israel

  281. needed to be called back

  282. in repentance

  283. and be disciplined,

  284. we also need to be called back

  285. in repentance

  286. and faith

  287. when we forget

  288. the Lord our God.

  289. I'm sure as well

  290. that we all have

  291. personal examples

  292. of God's faithfulness

  293. to us personally.

  294. However,

  295. we all too often

  296. put a king

  297. in God's place.

  298. We chase after

  299. idols

  300. our own way

  301. and forget

  302. who God is

  303. and what he's done

  304. for us.

  305. Some examples,

  306. in the West

  307. we're inclined

  308. to put

  309. our careers,

  310. jobs

  311. and working

  312. commitments high up

  313. on our list

  314. of priorities.

  315. We see our bosses

  316. and their words,

  317. instructions

  318. and directions

  319. as more important

  320. to follow

  321. than the Lord's.

  322. Our work team

  323. is more important

  324. than our church family.

  325. We can put family

  326. before God

  327. spending more time

  328. with them

  329. than the Lord.

  330. Our friends

  331. can distract us

  332. and lead us away

  333. from the Lord

  334. if we're not careful

  335. as well.

  336. Even the way

  337. we use our free time

  338. can take precedence

  339. over our God

  340. and King.

  341. In our modern world

  342. of social media

  343. and fast news

  344. we can feel

  345. the pressure

  346. of others

  347. even in our own homes

  348. and what they follow

  349. and worship

  350. to do the same.

  351. To conform

  352. to the culture

  353. of our day

  354. and forget God

  355. in that way

  356. and follow

  357. our own way

  358. and follow

  359. other things.

  360. And I've put

  361. many things

  362. in my times

  363. since I've become

  364. a Christian

  365. before the Lord

  366. my God

  367. and unfortunately

  368. I know

  369. for a fact

  370. as I keep going

  371. that my changeable

  372. heart

  373. will forget

  374. God

  375. like Israel did

  376. and elect

  377. and follow

  378. another king

  379. in his place.

  380. And then

  381. in verse 12

  382. the problem

  383. of Israel

  384. forgetting God

  385. is further

  386. explained

  387. in this

  388. instance

  389. context

  390. at

  391. Nahash

  392. Gilead

  393. with Nahash

  394. Jabesh

  395. Gilead

  396. sorry

  397. when at the

  398. end of the

  399. verse it reads

  400. no

  401. we want a

  402. king to

  403. rule over us

  404. even though

  405. the Lord

  406. your God

  407. was your king

  408. even though

  409. the Lord

  410. your God

  411. was your king

  412. Israel knew

  413. the Lord

  414. was their king

  415. and they owe

  416. allegiance to him

  417. before all others

  418. and to him alone

  419. but they let

  420. themselves be

  421. distracted and led

  422. away from

  423. following him

  424. wholeheartedly

  425. as we live our

  426. lives will we

  427. do the same

  428. will we allow

  429. ourselves to be

  430. led away

  431. to follow other

  432. things

  433. or will we

  434. cling to God

  435. and follow him

  436. wholeheartedly

  437. now the Israelites

  438. must understand

  439. the full gravity

  440. of their sin

  441. that they've

  442. forsaken

  443. and forgotten

  444. the Lord

  445. their God

  446. in place of

  447. a mortal man

  448. like them

  449. they've chosen

  450. to follow another

  451. and a creature

  452. like them

  453. they've chosen

  454. to put

  455. a creature

  456. in the place

  457. of the creator

  458. instead of

  459. placing all their

  460. faith

  461. and trust

  462. in the mighty

  463. God and king

  464. who created

  465. them

  466. the world

  467. and brought

  468. them to where

  469. they are now

  470. where they stand

  471. in front of Samuel

  472. they chose to

  473. turn their backs

  474. on him

  475. and follow Saul

  476. instead

  477. they knew God

  478. was their king

  479. and they were not

  480. to be the same

  481. as the nation

  482. surrounding them

  483. but rather

  484. be separate

  485. and different

  486. from them

  487. and their worship

  488. service

  489. of the true

  490. and living God

  491. it was through

  492. this difference

  493. that the Israelites

  494. would draw their

  495. neighbours to Israel

  496. to worship God

  497. that people from

  498. all over the world

  499. would hear of the

  500. mighty deeds

  501. of the king of Israel

  502. and be drawn

  503. towards Israel

  504. to swear allegiance

  505. to this God

  506. and worship him

  507. as all men should

  508. however

  509. in the request

  510. for a different

  511. king to rule

  512. over them

  513. Israel are going

  514. in the opposite

  515. direction

  516. and want to

  517. become like

  518. their neighbours

  519. rather than

  520. mirroring

  521. being an example

  522. to their neighbours

  523. which is a picture

  524. of us

  525. and our sinfulness

  526. as well

  527. we all want

  528. to go our own

  529. way

  530. in opposition

  531. to the Lord

  532. and his purpose

  533. for us

  534. then in verse 14

  535. the Israelites

  536. and Saul

  537. their new king

  538. are exhorted

  539. to fear the Lord

  540. obey him

  541. serve him

  542. and follow him

  543. and even though

  544. they've committed

  545. this great sin

  546. and turned their

  547. back on God

  548. and asked for a

  549. different king

  550. if they do this

  551. the Lord will bless

  552. them

  553. although they've

  554. committed this

  555. great sin

  556. the Lord will

  557. still bless them

  558. and in the next

  559. verse

  560. verse 15

  561. God warns Israel

  562. that if they

  563. don't fear him

  564. obey him

  565. and serve him

  566. then his hand

  567. will be against

  568. you

  569. as it was

  570. against your

  571. ancestors

  572. continuing that

  573. cycle

  574. that judges

  575. cycle

  576. where Israel

  577. sin

  578. forsake God

  579. and then God

  580. sells them

  581. into the hands

  582. of their enemies

  583. Israel turning

  584. back

  585. and crying out

  586. to God

  587. and the Lord

  588. having mercy

  589. and delivering

  590. them

  591. and although

  592. I've spoken

  593. about the judges

  594. cycle here

  595. in this incident

  596. it's all

  597. throughout

  598. the Old Testament

  599. when Israel

  600. forsake the

  601. Lord their God

  602. and their

  603. enemies come

  604. against them

  605. to draw them

  606. back to God

  607. their king

  608. so Israel

  609. have asked

  610. for a new

  611. king

  612. and sinned

  613. by forgetting

  614. the Lord

  615. their God

  616. and have been

  617. reminded of

  618. all his great

  619. deeds for them

  620. and have been

  621. presented with

  622. two options

  623. two paths

  624. to follow

  625. either follow

  626. the Lord

  627. and be blessed

  628. or follow

  629. a human

  630. king

  631. and eventually

  632. be destroyed

  633. and although

  634. Israel as I've

  635. said have

  636. committed this

  637. great sin

  638. God is

  639. merciful

  640. he disciplines

  641. Israel by

  642. sending a huge

  643. storm on

  644. the Israelites

  645. crops

  646. in Israel

  647. there's a very

  648. small rainy

  649. season

  650. and if that

  651. didn't come

  652. at the right

  653. time

  654. or were shorter

  655. or longer

  656. than expected

  657. the fine

  658. balance would

  659. be tipped

  660. and crops

  661. would fail

  662. people would

  663. go hungry

  664. and the

  665. local economy

  666. would go

  667. into meltdown

  668. God knew

  669. all this

  670. and performed

  671. this miracle

  672. to show

  673. his power

  674. and to make

  675. the Israelites

  676. fear him

  677. once again

  678. after they'd

  679. forgotten him

  680. and rejected

  681. him

  682. so they would

  683. hear his voice

  684. and turn back

  685. to following

  686. him

  687. not in an

  688. unreasonable

  689. or cruel

  690. way

  691. but in the

  692. way a loving

  693. father

  694. disciplines his

  695. children

  696. for their

  697. benefit

  698. to draw

  699. them off

  700. the wrong

  701. path

  702. and back

  703. onto the

  704. right path

  705. for those

  706. of you

  707. who are

  708. parents

  709. there are

  710. various ways

  711. of disciplining

  712. your children

  713. and various

  714. examples

  715. of when you've

  716. disciplined

  717. your children

  718. to make them

  719. see what

  720. they've done

  721. is wrong

  722. and to show

  723. them the

  724. right thing

  725. to do

  726. when a child

  727. goes to

  728. touch a

  729. hot hob

  730. their father

  731. won't sit

  732. and watch

  733. them touch

  734. the hot metal

  735. and badly

  736. burn themselves

  737. he'll stop

  738. them and make

  739. them understand

  740. that it's not

  741. for their own

  742. good to do

  743. that and show

  744. them the correct

  745. way to go

  746. not out of

  747. spite but

  748. out of love

  749. the right

  750. thing for

  751. them

  752. with this

  753. storm the

  754. Israelites are

  755. reminded in

  756. no uncertain

  757. terms that

  758. the Lord is

  759. God and

  760. whoever they

  761. choose to

  762. be their

  763. king is no

  764. comparison to

  765. him and

  766. his power and

  767. his ultimate

  768. authority

  769. but the end

  770. of the passage

  771. is really

  772. astonishing

  773. and the end

  774. of the passage

  775. is really

  776. beyond our

  777. understanding and

  778. our comprehension

  779. the Israelites

  780. have turned

  781. their backs

  782. on God

  783. they have to

  784. be reminded

  785. of everything

  786. God has

  787. done for

  788. them again

  789. God has

  790. disciplined

  791. his wayward

  792. people but

  793. then in verse

  794. 20 Samuel

  795. says to them

  796. do not be

  797. afraid do

  798. not be

  799. afraid it's

  800. beyond our

  801. comprehension that

  802. God has

  803. forgiven this

  804. trespass but

  805. he does up

  806. until now it

  807. may have seemed

  808. like doing

  809. gloom that it

  810. was over for

  811. Israel that God

  812. couldn't possibly

  813. forgive this

  814. sin again

  815. but there is

  816. hope yet

  817. there is good

  818. to come out

  819. of this

  820. not that Israel

  821. will learn and

  822. suddenly do all

  823. the right things

  824. and get it right

  825. in the future

  826. no again like

  827. this passage

  828. shows us it

  829. is because of

  830. what God will

  831. do and what

  832. he has done

  833. for his people

  834. as we read

  835. further in the

  836. Old Testament

  837. the Lord will

  838. perform many

  839. more mighty

  840. acts to save

  841. Israel and

  842. then the ultimate

  843. good news God

  844. will perform

  845. for Israel

  846. and us

  847. is that the

  848. true king

  849. came to

  850. earth

  851. the Lord

  852. Jesus came

  853. died and

  854. rose again

  855. so that we

  856. can follow him

  857. and be saved

  858. even at this

  859. point which

  860. seems so low

  861. and so dark

  862. we see God's

  863. grace mercy

  864. and righteousness

  865. displayed to

  866. his people

  867. although Israel

  868. have erred so

  869. badly God

  870. will not destroy

  871. them he won't

  872. send them away

  873. and he won't

  874. cast them out

  875. of his presence

  876. and we

  877. likewise

  878. will not be

  879. destroyed for

  880. our sin

  881. we won't be

  882. sent away

  883. and we won't

  884. be cast out

  885. of his presence

  886. and this made

  887. me consider how

  888. we the church

  889. respond to

  890. and follow God

  891. like Samuel

  892. says do we

  893. fear God

  894. do we serve

  895. God

  896. and do we

  897. follow God

  898. or do we

  899. turn our

  900. backs on God

  901. and chase

  902. after other

  903. things of the

  904. world and

  905. idols and

  906. our own

  907. sinful desires

  908. so next

  909. month on

  910. the 5th of

  911. November we

  912. mark the

  913. gunpowder plot

  914. when Guy

  915. Fawkes and

  916. others attempted

  917. to blow up

  918. parliament with

  919. King James

  920. inside

  921. unlike this

  922. passage Guy

  923. Fawkes was

  924. not pardoned

  925. or forgiven

  926. King James

  927. allowed the

  928. law to

  929. take its

  930. course and

  931. Guy Fawkes

  932. was executed

  933. for treason

  934. like you would

  935. expect from

  936. any monarch

  937. King James

  938. let the person

  939. attempting to

  940. kill him

  941. overthrow his

  942. authority and

  943. the kingdom be

  944. brutally executed

  945. likewise the

  946. Israelites

  947. deserved death

  948. but the Lord

  949. didn't enact

  950. the full course

  951. of the law

  952. but rather

  953. showed mercy

  954. instead of

  955. acting like

  956. any other

  957. monarch and

  958. enacting full

  959. justice and

  960. destroying Israel

  961. the Lord

  962. relented and

  963. had mercy on

  964. his wayward

  965. people

  966. just like

  967. the Israelites

  968. we deserve

  969. death for

  970. our treason

  971. and our

  972. rebellion

  973. but instead

  974. we are also

  975. shown mercy

  976. rather than

  977. incur the

  978. just punishment

  979. our actions

  980. deserve

  981. and as we

  982. read further

  983. in the story

  984. of Saul

  985. and the kings

  986. of Israel

  987. and Judah

  988. that would

  989. follow him

  990. it appears

  991. that all of

  992. this was in

  993. vain

  994. Israel's

  995. clamouring for

  996. a king

  997. as the

  998. human kings

  999. of Israel

  1000. and Judah

  1001. fail

  1002. they lead

  1003. Israel away

  1004. from God

  1005. into idolatry

  1006. they forget

  1007. God and

  1008. his acts

  1009. and his mighty

  1010. deeds for

  1011. Israel in the

  1012. past and

  1013. his promises

  1014. for the future

  1015. and they don't

  1016. keep the law

  1017. for kings that

  1018. we've spoken

  1019. about in

  1020. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  1021. chapter 17

  1022. and because of

  1023. all this Israel

  1024. eventually splits

  1025. into the northern

  1026. kingdom of Israel

  1027. and the southern

  1028. kingdom of Judah

  1029. they continue to

  1030. sin and not

  1031. follow God

  1032. and both Israel

  1033. and Judah

  1034. are led away

  1035. into exile

  1036. but we can

  1037. take hope

  1038. this all acts

  1039. as tension

  1040. building

  1041. these human

  1042. kings merely

  1043. make the people

  1044. of Israel

  1045. yearn and

  1046. groan for

  1047. God's promised

  1048. king the

  1049. Messiah the

  1050. Lord Jesus

  1051. and how he

  1052. would lead

  1053. God's people

  1054. who will be

  1055. the king

  1056. Israel needs

  1057. that can truly

  1058. lead Israel

  1059. in fear in

  1060. the Lord

  1061. serving the

  1062. Lord

  1063. and obeying

  1064. the Lord

  1065. but just

  1066. like Israel

  1067. here didn't

  1068. follow their

  1069. true king

  1070. God

  1071. they didn't

  1072. follow the

  1073. Messiah

  1074. the Lord

  1075. Jesus when

  1076. he came to

  1077. the earth

  1078. to save his

  1079. people from

  1080. their sins

  1081. but this

  1082. didn't stop

  1083. the Lord

  1084. Jesus from

  1085. completing his

  1086. task and he

  1087. has indeed

  1088. freed his

  1089. people from

  1090. their sins

  1091. by allowing a

  1092. perfectly

  1093. obedient life

  1094. dying on

  1095. the cross

  1096. and rising

  1097. again triumphantly

  1098. from the grave

  1099. he was rejected

  1100. once when he

  1101. came as a

  1102. suffering servant

  1103. but there is a

  1104. day approaching

  1105. when the Lord

  1106. Jesus will

  1107. return to the

  1108. earth to claim

  1109. his prize and

  1110. his bride the

  1111. church

  1112. where every knee

  1113. will bow and

  1114. all tongues

  1115. confess that he

  1116. is king

  1117. on that day he

  1118. will not be

  1119. rejected again

  1120. all will see him

  1121. and all will

  1122. recognize that he

  1123. is king

  1124. some in jubilation

  1125. that the king

  1126. has finally returned

  1127. and some in

  1128. shock but none

  1129. will be able to

  1130. reject his

  1131. authority and

  1132. kingship on

  1133. that day of

  1134. judgment and

  1135. justice

  1136. for the church

  1137. for those who

  1138. believe that

  1139. will be a

  1140. glorious day

  1141. but for those

  1142. who reject the

  1143. Lord Jesus in

  1144. life it will be

  1145. a terrible day

  1146. when they

  1147. acknowledge the

  1148. king that they

  1149. have rejected

  1150. who they have

  1151. not followed in

  1152. life

  1153. for anyone here

  1154. tonight who

  1155. hasn't decided to

  1156. follow the Lord

  1157. Jesus the true

  1158. king I would

  1159. urge you to

  1160. consider your

  1161. position tonight

  1162. to consider the

  1163. path you're on

  1164. to consider the

  1165. person you are

  1166. rejecting and to

  1167. consider the

  1168. consequences and

  1169. where that path

  1170. will eventually

  1171. lead

  1172. so going forward

  1173. how should this

  1174. affect our walk

  1175. with the Lord

  1176. individually and

  1177. as a congregation

  1178. our faith in the

  1179. Lord and his

  1180. mercy and his

  1181. grace his

  1182. faithfulness and

  1183. his righteousness

  1184. and promises should

  1185. abound more and

  1186. more each day in

  1187. the passage God

  1188. and Samuel are

  1189. shown to being

  1190. good and faithful

  1191. leaders Samuel

  1192. hasn't defrauded

  1193. stolen or being

  1194. corrupt throughout

  1195. his tenure God's

  1196. deeds on behalf of

  1197. Israel are expounded

  1198. and show the

  1199. amazing things he's

  1200. done for his

  1201. people Israel

  1202. yet they still

  1203. turn away and

  1204. chase after a

  1205. man and

  1206. something ultimately

  1207. that won't

  1208. satisfy them and

  1209. not last

  1210. however we can

  1211. see from this

  1212. chapter where the

  1213. Israelites went

  1214. wrong and we can

  1215. go in the opposite

  1216. direction use their

  1217. example as a light

  1218. to shine us onto

  1219. the right path to

  1220. follow the Lord

  1221. there are any

  1222. number of things

  1223. in our modern

  1224. lives that will

  1225. try to lead us

  1226. away from God

  1227. to lead us away

  1228. from the Lord

  1229. to place them in

  1230. the highest place

  1231. of importance in

  1232. our lives

  1233. our culture puts

  1234. as I've said

  1235. previously a high

  1236. value on success

  1237. in the workplace

  1238. both so you can

  1239. boast to other

  1240. people outside

  1241. and within

  1242. competition within

  1243. your own workplace

  1244. pressure to get

  1245. promoted and pay

  1246. rise which often

  1247. means other things

  1248. drop down your

  1249. priority list

  1250. more time spent at

  1251. work late nights

  1252. and overtime and

  1253. one of the first

1254. things to be cut by

  1255. many is Bible

  1256. reading prayer and

  1257. church and time

  1258. spent with the

  1259. Lord our eyes

  1260. taken off the

  1261. king and cast on

  1262. another and for

  1263. many the first stage

  1264. of focusing your

  1265. attention on your

  1266. job and work

  1267. is striving at

  1268. university for

  1269. good grades to

  1270. achieve this job

  1271. later on

  1272. forgetting that

  1273. you're there to

  1274. glorify God and

  1275. worship him through

  1276. your studies and

  1277. not to become

  1278. fixated on them

  1279. and to worship

  1280. them in that way

  1281. and the pressures

  1282. of raising children

  1283. taking them to

  1284. school

  1285. extracurricular

  1286. activities and

  1287. spending time with

  1288. them we can get

  1289. sidetracked and

  1290. forget the one

  1291. who's given these

  1292. good gifts

  1293. worshipping and

  1294. chasing after the

  1295. good gifts

  1296. themselves the

  1297. king gives us

  1298. and in the process

  1299. for getting his

  1300. goodness to us

  1301. many of us are

  1302. grandparents which

  1303. has its own

  1304. challenges and it

  1305. can be a challenge

  1306. in itself to keep

  1307. the Lord as our

  1308. king and not let

  1309. our affections and

  1310. loyalty be drawn

  1311. from our families

  1312. from God rather to

  1313. our families and

  1314. grandchildren

  1315. children those of

  1316. us with no

  1317. families are no

  1318. more immune to

  1319. the temptation of

  1320. being sidetracked

  1321. and distracted from

  1322. God for our time

  1323. and our attention to

  1324. be given to friends

  1325. and activities we're

  1326. involved in hobbies

  1327. interests and social

  1328. engagements which

  1329. will all leave us

  1330. empty in the end

  1331. in Scotland and

  1332. various other places

  1333. in the west people

  1334. are obsessed with

  1335. football and sport

  1336. and many people

  1337. play pay more

  1338. attention to league

  1339. tables and how

  1340. their preferred

  1341. athletes and

  1342. favourite sports

  1343. stars are performing

  1344. than anything else

  1345. body image is

  1346. massively important

  1347. to many people

  1348. everywhere we turn

  1349. in social media

  1350. the television

  1351. adverts when

  1352. we're walking

  1353. around are either

  1354. trying to convince

  1355. us to slim down

  1356. or to bulk up

  1357. both options

  1358. taking hours of

  1359. our time

  1360. our money

  1361. thought when

  1362. we're away from

  1363. the gym or

  1364. wherever we

  1365. exercise

  1366. and attention

  1367. most importantly

  1368. that should be

  1369. placed on God

  1370. and then from

  1371. there we end up

  1372. worshipping our

  1373. own image and

  1374. worshipping the

  1375. image of created

  1376. beings

  1377. and as well

  1378. in this process

  1379. of thinking about

  1380. this we can get

  1381. distracted by

  1382. technology

  1383. most of us have

  1384. phones

  1385. and tablets

  1386. and these

  1387. things

  1388. take up a

  1389. huge amount

  1390. of our time

  1391. looking at

  1392. them

  1393. and they

  1394. as well

  1395. can become

  1396. a snare

  1397. to us

  1398. and our

  1399. attention

  1400. in the face

  1401. of all these

  1402. other things

  1403. we become

  1404. like Israel

  1405. in this passage

  1406. falling after

  1407. other things

  1408. rebellious

  1409. and we forsake

  1410. the Lord

  1411. our King

  1412. we forget

  1413. how he

  1414. has led us

  1415. and all the

  1416. mighty acts

  1417. he has done

  1418. for us

  1419. so we

  1420. must choose

  1421. who we

  1422. follow

  1423. the real

  1424. king

  1425. or an

  1426. imposter

  1427. the real

  1428. king

  1429. or a

  1430. usurper

  1431. in our

  1432. lives

  1433. all the

  1434. good things

  1435. we receive

  1436. and all the

  1437. good things

  1438. we are a

  1439. part of

  1440. have been

  1441. given to

  1442. us

  1443. and we've

  1444. been led

  1445. into things

  1446. by God

  1447. we need to

  1448. cling to the

  1449. Lord

  1450. in our lives

  1451. we should pray

  1452. and ask

  1453. the Lord

  1454. to show

  1455. us

  1456. where we

  1457. forget

  1458. him

  1459. and repent

  1460. of whatever

  1461. we put

  1462. in his

  1463. place

  1464. whatever that

  1465. may be

  1466. and turn

  1467. back to

  1468. following him

  1469. and going

  1470. on the

  1471. Lord's

  1472. path

  1473. and not

  1474. our own

  1475. but

  1476. when we

  1477. do fail

  1478. as we

  1479. will

  1480. and we

  1481. all

  1482. inevitably

  1483. will fail

  1484. in this

  1485. we will

  1486. give our

  1487. affection

  1488. loyalty

  1489. time

  1490. and attention

  1491. to other

  1492. things

  1493. in place

  1494. of God

  1495. we should

  1496. remember

  1497. what God

  1498. says to

  1499. Israel

  1500. in this

  1501. passage

  1502. and remember

  1503. that he

  1504. says do

  1505. not be

  1506. afraid

  1507. God

  1508. will draw

  1509. his people

  1510. back to

  1511. himself

  1512. when we

  1513. go down

  1514. a wrong

  1515. path

  1516. with

  1517. discipline

  1518. and will

  1519. not carry

  1520. out the

  1521. law

  1522. as it

  1523. should

  1524. be

  1525. and as

  1526. we

  1527. deserve

  1528. as our

  1529. king

  1530. the Lord

  1531. Jesus

  1532. has taken

  1533. the punishment

  1534. once and

  1535. for all

  1536. it's complete

  1537. for all our

  1538. disobedience

  1539. and rebellion

  1540. and while he

  1541. carried that

  1542. to the cross

  1543. for us to

  1544. pay the

  1545. penalty

  1546. for that

  1547. and all

  1548. our other

  1549. sin

  1550. just like

  1551. Guy

  1552. Fox

  1553. was

  1554. executed

  1555. we

  1556. deserve

  1557. the

  1558. punishment

  1559. of

  1560. the

  1561. law

  1562. but

  1563. because

  1564. of

  1565. the

  1566. Lord

  1567. Jesus

  1568. we

  1569. can

  1570. stand

  1571. confidently

  1572. before

  1573. God

  1574. the

  1575. Father

  1576. because

  1577. of

  1578. the

  1579. Lord

  1580. Jesus

  1581. perfection

  1582. and

  1583. righteousness

  1584. as

  1585. Samuel

  1586. says to

  1587. the

  1588. repentant

  1589. Israel

  1590. they will

  1591. continue

  1592. to pray

  1593. for them

  1594. and teach

  1595. them

  1596. we should

  1597. be praying

  1598. for each

  1599. other

  1600. in this

  1601. as well

  1602. it's all

  1603. too easy

  1604. with all

  1605. these things

  1606. I've spoken

  1607. about

  1608. to become

  1609. sidetracked

  1610. and possibly

  1611. not even

  1612. realise

  1613. that we are

  1614. going down

  1615. this wrong

  1616. path

  1617. we should be

  1618. praying that we

  1619. should always

  1620. follow the

  1621. Lord as

  1622. the Lord's

  1623. people

  1624. that we

  1625. should die

  1626. to ourselves

  1627. pick up our

  1628. crosses

  1629. and follow

  1630. him

  1631. pray for our

  1632. other Christian

  1633. brothers and

  1634. sisters throughout

  1635. the city

  1636. that they would

  1637. follow the

  1638. Lord as

  1639. well

  1640. and as a

  1641. church we

  1642. should be

  1643. speaking the

  1644. gospel and

  1645. the Bible

  1646. and God's

  1647. word to

  1648. one another

  1649. instructing each

  1650. other in the

  1651. way of the

  1652. Lord to

  1653. help each

  1654. other to

  1655. follow the

  1656. Lord

  1657. so just

  1658. like me and

  1659. my friends

  1660. on my

  1661. camping trip

  1662. back all

  1663. those years

  1664. ago in

  1665. school we

  1666. all have a

  1667. choice to

  1668. make we

  1669. all have two

  1670. paths in

  1671. front of us

  1672. every day

  1673. and we need

  1674. to make a

  1675. decision as

  1676. to which one

  1677. we'll go

  1678. down which

  1679. one we'll

  1680. follow

  1681. that day it

  1682. wasn't that

  1683. serious we

  1684. had to have

  1685. a bit of an

  1686. unpleasant walk

  1687. with our stuff

  1688. on our back

  1689. and it

  1690. took us a

  1691. lot longer

  1692. to get to

  1693. where we

  1694. were going

  1695. but this

  1696. choice is

  1697. very serious

  1698. the consequence

  1699. of choosing

  1700. the wrong

  1701. path and

  1702. who to

  1703. follow will

  1704. lead to

  1705. destruction if

  1706. we choose

  1707. the wrong

  1708. path but

  1709. the right

  1710. path is

  1711. God's path

  1712. and leads

  1713. to eternal

  1714. life

  1715. so will

  1716. we put

  1717. away our

  1718. idols and

  1719. follow the

  1720. Lord wholeheartedly

  1721. will we

  1722. follow our

  1723. king or

  1724. will we

  1725. reject him

  1726. and follow

  1727. a usurper

  1728. will we

  1729. follow the

  1730. Lord Jesus

  1731. and be

  1732. saved or

  1733. reject him

  1734. and in

  1735. turn be

  1736. rejected

  1737. just in

  1738. closing I

  1739. would urge

  1740. you as

  1741. Samuel says

  1742. to the

  1743. Israelites to

  1744. fear the

  1745. Lord to

  1746. serve the

  1747. Lord and

  1748. obey the

  1749. Lord and

  1750. pray for me

  1751. as I've been

  1752. saying to you

  1753. to fear the

  1754. Lord serve

  1755. the Lord and

  1756. obey the

  1757. Lord thank

  1758. you
