  1. So as Fiona's mentioned, the passage that we're going to be reading this evening is quite long.

  2. It's just shy of two chapters.

  3. And so I thought it would be good to give you a few things to look out for,

  4. just so we keep our attention as we go through these passages.

  5. But before we get into that, I just want to caveat this sermon and say

  6. that there are tons and tons of details in this passage.

  7. And I cannot go into all of them.

  8. We cannot think about all of them.

  9. But if you take a note of them, I would love to speak to you afterwards about it,

  10. because it's such a marvelous passage of God's word.

  11. But just two things to look out for.

  12. So as we read through this passage, there is a contrast between two people.

  13. We have the person of faith.

  14. I'm not going to tell you who that is.

  15. I'm going to let you guess that.

  16. And then you have the person of folly or the person who is foolish.

  17. So those are the two things to look out for.

  18. If you want to make a little mark in your Bible or on a separate piece of paper,

  19. look out for signs of faith and signs of foolishness.

  20. I'm just going to hand over to Corrie, who's going to come and read God's word to us.

  21. Just as we take our seats, let's pray together.

  22. Father, as we turn to your word this evening,

  23. as we ponder its significance for our life,

  24. as we think about what it says,

  25. we do ask that the words of our mouths

  26. and the meditations of our hearts

  27. would be pleasing in your sight,

  28. O Lord, our rock

  29. and our redeemer.

  30. Amen.

  31. Have you ever sat down

  32. and pondered what the world seems,

  33. deems as foolish?

  34. So I had a quick look this week,

  35. a quick Google,

  36. and I found that the world thinks that certain things are foolish.

  37. For example,

  38. not flushing the toilet to save on the water bill is foolish.

  39. Not investing your money early on in life apparently is foolish.

  40. Not doing something because it sounds too good to be true is foolish.

  41. And apparently,

  42. not forgiving yourself,

  43. no matter what you do,

  44. is foolish.

  45. And the world says that the opposite of foolishness is wisdom.

  46. And a person's wisdom is determined by their IQ,

  47. by their state of mind,

  48. and by their actions.

  49. And so,

  50. the world says that a wise person

  51. apparently knows who they are as an individual.

  52. They accept that only they have the power and authority

  53. to change their own lives.

  54. They live for their own success,

  55. and they do everything they can

  56. to get what they want.

  57. This is the world we live in, folks.

  58. This is what the world says is foolish

  59. and what is not foolish.

  60. What a shallow view of foolishness

  61. and of wisdom.

  62. But the Bible has a much greater story

  63. and a simpler story.

  64. See,

  65. the definition of folly or foolishness

  66. in the Bible

  67. isn't referring to intellectual ability.

  68. But when the word of God speaks of someone as a fool,

  69. it's referring to someone who is living

  70. as if God doesn't exist.

  71. The fool says in his heart,

  72. there is no God.

  73. And therefore,

  74. the opposite of foolishness,

  75. according to the Bible,

  76. is actually faith.

  77. And the Bible's definition of someone marked by faith

  78. is someone who fears the Lord

  79. and who trusts in him,

  80. in his word,

  81. and in his promises.

  82. And so the question I want us to keep

  83. in the back of our minds

  84. as we walk through these chapters

  85. in 1 Samuel together

  86. is,

  87. are we people of faith

  88. or folly?

  89. 1 Samuel 13 and 14

  90. were read to us

  91. and you would have seen,

  92. hopefully,

  93. the contrast

  94. between these two characters,

  95. Jonathan and Saul.

  96. And as we walk through,

  97. I want you to keep that question

  98. in the back of your mind.

  99. Are we people of faith

  100. or folly?

  101. And as we dive into these chapters,

  102. I think there are two things

  103. that we see this evening.

  104. And the first is

  105. a faithful soldier.

  106. Chapter 13,

  107. verse 16 to 14,

  108. 23.

  109. A faithful soldier.

  110. So when we rejoin the story,

  111. the nation of Israel

  112. and the beginnings of Saul reign,

  113. we enter into a hopeless situation.

  114. Saul and his army

  115. are camped out at Gibeah

  116. and the Philistines

  117. are just a few miles away

  118. over some cliffs.

  119. And Saul was sitting

  120. with an army

  121. of around 600 men.

  122. And as he sits there,

  123. raiding parties

  124. are going throughout

  125. his whole kingdom,

  126. wreaking havoc.

  127. So why is this so devastating?

  128. Why do I say it's hopeless?

  129. Well, look at verses 19 to 22.

  130. In the whole ranks

  131. of the Israelite army,

  132. there were two swords.

  133. So here we have

  134. a small army

  135. that's surrounded

  136. by a vast Philistine army

  137. described in the beginning

  138. of chapter 13,

  139. as numerous as the sand

  140. on the seashore.

  141. And they have two swords.

  142. This is not the kind of story

  143. that you want to be remembered

  144. for the rest of time

  145. by your nation.

  146. This is not the situation

  147. that you can just walk into,

  148. wing it,

  149. and see what happens.

  150. The only options

  151. that seem to be

  152. before this small army

  153. are to fight and die

  154. or to run away and die.

  155. This situation is terrible.

  156. So Saul and the nation of Israel,

  157. it seems,

  158. are a hopeless case.

  159. Lost.

  160. But now we see

  161. the first contrast

  162. that runs through

  163. these chapters.

  164. Look at Jonathan

  165. in chapter 14,

  166. verse 1,

  167. and Saul

  168. in chapter 14,

  169. verse 2.

  170. What is the difference

  171. that you see?

  172. Jonathan comes up

  173. with a plan

  174. and Saul

  175. is relaxing

  176. under a tree.

  177. And throughout

  178. these chapters,

  179. these two are being

  180. contrasted.

  181. Jonathan is a

  182. faithful soldier

  183. and Saul

  184. is a self-centered

  185. leader.

  186. But in this first section,

  187. the main focus

  188. is on Jonathan.

  189. So in verse 1,

  190. he makes a plan

  191. to go and attack

  192. the Philistine outpost

  193. that had departed

  194. from their camp

  195. in Michmash.

  196. But notice

  197. that he doesn't

  198. tell his father.

  199. Why?

  200. Well,

  201. we don't actually

  202. know why,

  203. but just looking

  204. at the details

  205. that are mentioned

  206. in verses 2

  207. and 3,

  208. Saul doesn't

  209. necessarily seem

  210. in a hurry

  211. to actually do

  212. anything about

  213. his enemy's presence

  214. in his land.

  215. He's sitting

  216. under a tree

  217. having the time

  218. of his life

  219. with his friends.

  220. One of whom

  221. is a descendant

  222. of Eli's son,

  223. who God

  224. actually cut off

  225. and said would

  226. never be a priest

  227. again in 1 Samuel

    1 Samuel 2 chapter mention

  228. chapter 2.

  229. And yet,

  230. here he sits

  231. in an ephod,

  232. a gown reserved

  233. only for the priests.

  234. So Saul

  235. seems to have

  236. reinstituted

  237. what God

  238. had condemned.

  239. And so under

  240. this pomegranate tree,

  241. we see a king

  242. who has been

  243. rejected

  244. by God,

  245. and we saw

  246. that last week

  247. in chapter 13

  248. verse 14.

  249. And he's sitting

  250. with a priesthood

  251. that's been rejected

  252. way back in chapter 2.

  253. Things aren't

  254. looking good.

  255. And so Jonathan

  256. doesn't tell his dad

  257. and his king,

  258. but he goes to see

  259. what's going on

  260. in the outpost.

  261. And in verse 4,

  262. we see,

  263. for Jonathan

  264. to get to this outpost,

  265. he must climb

  266. over two cliffs.

  267. And their names,

  268. we're giving them there,

  269. they don't really

  270. fill us with confidence

  271. when they're translated.

  272. These cliffs

  273. are roughly translated

  274. as slippery

  275. and thorny.

  276. doesn't really

  277. fill you with confidence,

  278. does it?

  279. This isn't going to be

  280. an easy skip up

  281. Arthur's seat

  282. on a lovely

  283. sunny Saturday morning.

  284. Jonathan

  285. and his armor bearer

  286. are going to have

  287. to climb over

  288. these cliffs

  289. on their hands

  290. and knees,

  291. cuts and bruises

  292. and all.

  293. And then when they

  294. get to the top,

  295. when they get over them,

  296. they're going to

  297. have to fight.

  298. Again,

  299. a hopeless

  300. situation.

  301. But look at

  302. this man's faith

  303. in verse 6,

  304. where he says,

  305. perhaps the Lord

  306. will act

  307. in our behalf.

  308. Nothing,

  309. nothing

  310. can hinder

  311. the Lord

  312. from saving,

  313. whether by many

  314. or by few.

  315. Here we have

  316. a man whose confidence

  317. is not in his own

  318. skill in battle,

  319. not in his own

  320. physical ability

  321. and not in his

  322. own king,

  323. but his confidence

  324. is solely

  325. based on the

  326. mighty deeds

  327. and will

  328. of his God.

  329. These are the

  330. actions of a man

  331. who listened

  332. to Samuel's words

  333. in chapter 12,

  334. verse 24,

  335. if you can turn

  336. back there if you want,

  337. where he's standing

  338. and he warns

  339. the nation of Israel,

  340. but be sure

  341. to fear the Lord

  342. and serve him

  343. faithfully

  344. with all your

  345. heart

  346. and consider

  347. what great

  348. things he has

  349. done for you.

  350. You see,

  351. Jonathan knows

  352. who's on his

  353. side.

  354. He knows

  355. that the battle

  356. will be won

  357. and we see

  358. a hint of

  359. why in verse 6.

  360. Jonathan calls

  361. the Philistines

  362. uncircumcised

  363. men.

  364. He's pointing

  365. out the

  366. fundamental

  367. difference

  368. between Israel

  369. and the

  370. Philistines.

  371. The Israelites

  372. are the chosen

  373. people of God

  374. set apart

  375. by him

  376. and for him

  377. and so they

  378. will be under

  379. his protection

  380. and his

  381. deliverance

  382. from their

  383. enemies.

  384. And the

  385. Philistines

  386. are the people

  387. who are opposed

  388. to God.

  389. They worship

  390. man-made gods.

  391. Israel are a

  392. people who are

  393. called to be

  394. holy,

  395. God's people,

  396. recipients of

  397. his promise

  398. and the

  399. Philistines

  400. are not

  401. holy.

  402. They are not

  403. walking in

  404. line with God.

  405. They are enemies

  406. of God and

  407. enemies of

  408. his people.

  409. And Jonathan

  410. draws that out

  411. here and we'll

  412. hear more about

  413. that next week

  414. in chapter 15.

  415. But in all of

  416. this,

  417. Jonathan is not

  418. a fool.

  419. He knows

  420. that as he

  421. scales,

  422. he knows that

  423. the scales are

  424. tipped against

  425. him.

  426. And do you

  427. see how he

  428. leaves the

  429. decision in

  430. God's hands?

  431. When they

  432. show themselves

  433. to the

  434. Philistines and

  435. they say,

  436. wait there,

  437. then they

  438. will.

  439. But if they

  440. say,

  441. come up,

  442. then they

  443. will know

  444. that God

  445. has delivered

  446. them into

  447. their hands.

  448. So even

  449. now,

  450. just before

  451. a fight,

  452. as the

  453. adrenaline is

  454. pumping through

  455. Jonathan's

  456. veins,

  457. as he's

  458. tired from

  459. just climbing

  460. over two

  461. cliffs,

  462. he still

  463. leaves the

  464. decision in

  465. the hands

  466. of the

  467. God who's

  468. in control

  469. of the

  470. world.

  471. And what

  472. does God

  473. do?

  474. Well,

  475. he fights

  476. for them.

  477. They are

  478. called up to

  479. the outpost,

  480. apparently to

  481. be taught a

  482. lesson,

  483. and they

  484. manage to

  485. kill 20

  486. men.

  487. And remember

  488. that they

  489. only had

  490. one sword

  491. against 20

  492. soldiers who

  493. presumably had

  494. a sword

  495. each.

  496. This was

  497. no act of

  498. man,

  499. but it was

  500. an act of

  501. God.

  502. This was

  503. God fighting

  504. for his

  505. faithful

  506. servant,

  507. God working

  508. out his

  509. extraordinary

  510. will through

  511. the means

  512. of ordinary

  513. people.

  514. He made

  515. the impossible

  516. possible.

  517. George

  518. Muller ran

  519. an orphanage

  520. in Bristol,

  521. and on one

  522. occasion he

  523. woke up,

  524. he had 300

  525. orphans in

  526. his care,

  527. and they

  528. had no

  529. food.

  530. The house

  531. mother came

  532. and asked

  533. him what they

  534. should do.

  535. it was an

  536. impossible

  537. task to

  538. feed 300

  539. children when

  540. there's not a

  541. crumb in

  542. the building.

  543. And he

  544. said,

  545. get the

  546. children ready,

  547. seat them

  548. at the

  549. table as

  550. if we're

  551. just about

  552. to eat and

  553. start the

  554. day normally.

  555. So they

  556. did.

  557. Muller walks

  558. in and he

  559. gives thanks

  560. to God for

  561. the food that

  562. they were

  563. about to

  564. receive,

  565. which was

  566. at this

  567. point

  568. non-existent,

  569. and he

  570. waited.

  571. Belly's

  572. rumbling.

  573. And within

  574. minutes,

  575. a baker

  576. walked in

  577. and said

  578. that he

  579. couldn't

  580. sleep the

  581. night before

  582. because he

  583. knew the

  584. children would

  585. have no

  586. food,

  587. and so he

  588. stayed up

  589. to bake

  590. three batches

  591. of bread for

  592. them for

  593. free.

  594. So they

  595. had food.

  596. And then

  597. seconds later,

  598. in runs the

  599. milkman whose

  600. cart wheel had

  601. just come off

  602. his cart,

  603. and he

  604. gave them

  605. ten big

  606. old tubs

  607. of milk

  608. because the

  609. milk would

  610. go off by

  611. the time the

  612. wheel was

  613. repaired.

  614. And he

  615. said,

  616. take it

  617. for free.

  618. They

  619. started with

  620. nothing in

  621. an impossible

  622. situation,

  623. and then they

  624. ended with

  625. too much.

  626. God made

  627. the impossible

  628. possible.

  629. Nothing is

  630. impossible for

  631. our great

  632. God.

  633. And so what

  634. happens in

  635. this hopeless

  636. situation that

  637. we started off

  638. in?

  639. Well, in

  640. verse 15,

  641. God is

  642. fighting for

  643. the Israelites

  644. and he sends

  645. a panic on

  646. the army.

  647. Israel are

  648. not alone.

  649. Despite their

  650. rebellion and

  651. rejection of

  652. God, he

  653. still amazingly,

  654. lovingly cares

  655. for and

  656. delivers his

  657. people.

  658. Do you see

  659. God's goodness

  660. in this?

  661. He could have

  662. walked away from

  663. his rebellious

  664. people and

  665. their disobedient

  666. king and we

  667. would have

  668. thought, yep,

  669. you've got all

  670. the right to

  671. do that.

  672. But instead,

  673. he is acting on

  674. their behalf,

  675. not because of

  676. who they are,

  677. not because of

  678. what they have

  679. done, but he

  680. is acting on

  681. their behalf and

  682. fighting for

  683. them because

  684. of who he

  685. is.

  686. And then

  687. Saul does a

  688. roll call and

  689. realizes that

  690. his son and

  691. armor bearer

  692. were missing

  693. and he turns

  694. to his priest

  695. in verses 18

  696. and 19 for

  697. advice.

  698. He calls for

  699. the ark of

  700. the Lord to

  701. be brought,

  702. probably because

  703. he wanted to

  704. hear God's

  705. voice.

  706. And so

  707. Saul had

  708. been sitting

  709. and waiting

  710. for something

  711. to happen

  712. when he

  713. should have

  714. been acting.

  715. And now

  716. he should be

  717. listening to

  718. guidance, but

  719. in verse 20

  720. we see that

  721. he brushes

  722. it off.

  723. He quickly

  724. changes his

  725. mind and

  726. instead of

  727. focusing on

  728. God, he

  729. focuses on

  730. himself and

  731. says, no,

  732. forget about

  733. the ark, I'm

  734. going to war.

  735. All of

  736. Israel come

  737. out to help

  738. and in verse

  739. 23, the

  740. amazing truth

  741. that despite

  742. all of this

  743. rebellion, the

  744. Lord saved

  745. Israel.

  746. This was not

  747. the act of a

  748. mighty king who

  749. trusted in

  750. God, nor was

  751. it the act of

  752. a faithful servant

  753. who served the

  754. Lord selflessly,

  755. but this was the

  756. act of an

  757. almighty God

  758. working for the

  759. good of his

  760. people.

  761. But why are we

  762. given this story?

  763. Why are there

  764. so many details in

  765. these two chapters

  766. that we can't

  767. even get to?

  768. Well, this

  769. story shows us

  770. the reactions of

  771. people in

  772. relation to God.

  773. There is either

  774. faith or

  775. folly.

  776. Jonathan was

  777. wise.

  778. He listened to

  779. Samuel's warning

  780. and he remembered

  781. who was on his

  782. side.

  783. Saul was foolish

  784. and he sat

  785. when he should

  786. have fought and

  787. he acted when

  788. he should have

  789. listened.

  790. One man guided

  791. by the counsel

  792. of God and had

  793. confidence in him

  794. whilst the other

  795. was guided by his

  796. own selfish

  797. ambition.

  798. Isn't this true

  799. for our own

  800. fallen, broken

  801. hearts?

  802. Are we people

  803. of faith or

  804. folly?

  805. How often do we

  806. face a difficult

  807. situation in life

  808. and rely on

  809. ourselves, on

  810. our own intuition

  811. and we sit under

  812. the pomegranate

  813. tree as it were?

  814. God.

  815. But wouldn't it

  816. be far better

  817. if we acted

  818. in confidence,

  819. in the knowledge

  820. of who is on

  821. our side, who

  822. we are living

  823. for and serving

  824. and in full

  825. dependence on

  826. him?

  827. And I'm not

  828. saying that we

  829. should let go

  830. and let God

  831. because that can

  832. be dangerous if

  833. we follow it to

  834. its full conclusion

  835. but I am saying

  836. that we should

  837. take the example

  838. of Jonathan and

  839. trust God and

  840. get going.

  841. think about

  842. that little

  843. church that

  844. about 51

  845. years ago

  846. stepped out in

  847. faith and

  848. bought the very

  849. building that we

  850. sit in this

  851. evening.

  852. Did they sit

  853. under a pomegranate

  854. tree?

  855. Absolutely not.

  856. They stepped

  857. out in faith and

  858. they trusted that

  859. this was God's

  860. plan, that he

  861. would build his

  862. church and

  863. nothing would

  864. prevail against

  865. it.

  866. And what's

  867. the result?

  868. Well 51

  869. years later we

  870. sit here this

  871. evening.

  872. The community

  873. has been blessed

  874. through ministries

  875. that the church

  876. runs.

  877. The church has

  878. grown in number

  879. but more

  880. importantly people

  881. have come to

  882. know Jesus

  883. Christ as their

  884. Lord and

  885. Saviour.

  886. People trusted

  887. in God and

  888. they acted.

  889. God has given

  890. us all the

  891. revelation that we

  892. need about his

  893. will for our

  894. lives in this

  895. book that we

  896. hold in our

  897. hands.

  898. We are called

  899. to live distinct

  900. lives, radical

  901. lives of faith

  902. lived out in the

  903. ordinary tasks of

  904. everyday life.

  905. And in all the

  906. difficulties that

  907. come with life we

  908. are to throw

  909. ourselves on the

  910. power and strength

  911. of an almighty

  912. God to uphold us

  913. and to guide us.

  914. Listen to God's

  915. word.

  916. trust in him

  917. and let your

  918. life be marked

  919. by faith in

  920. him.

  921. That is how you

  922. become a person

  923. of faith and

  924. not a person of

  925. folly.

  926. The second thing

  927. that we see in

  928. these chapters is a

  929. self-centered leader.

  930. In chapter 14

  931. verse 24 to 52

  932. a self-centered

  933. leader.

  934. Verse 23 ends on

  935. such a good

  936. note.

  937. That God saved

  938. Israel that day

  939. and so we'd

  940. expect rejoicing

  941. and celebration

  942. after that

  943. wouldn't we?

  944. But instead we

  945. see the sheer

  946. folly of a leader

  947. who's more

  948. preoccupied with

  949. himself and his

  950. own glory than he

  951. is with God's.

  952. Verse 24

  953. Israel was in

  954. distress that day.

  955. Why?

  956. Well because in

  957. Saul's haste,

  958. the haste that we

  959. got a glimpse of in

  960. verses 19 and 20,

  961. he seems to have

  962. put an oath over

  963. Israel saying,

  964. cursed be anyone who

  965. eats food before

  966. evening comes,

  967. before I have

  968. avenged myself on

  969. my enemies.

  970. Do you see Saul's

  971. problem?

  972. The man who

  973. didn't obey God

  974. at the beginning

  975. of chapter 13

  976. now makes no

  977. reference to God

  978. at all.

  979. No expression of

  980. faith or confidence

  981. in him,

  982. but he is obsessed

  983. with avenging himself

  984. on his enemies

  985. and he's coercing

  986. his people into

  987. doing it for him.

  988. And this oath and

  989. curse is such a

  990. contrast to

  991. Jonathan's words in

  992. chapter 14 verse 6,

  993. isn't it?

  994. Perhaps the Lord

  995. will act on our

  996. behalf.

  997. Nothing can hinder

  998. the Lord from

  999. saving whether by

  1000. many or by few.

  1001. Now we're not

  1002. sure why Saul made

  1003. this oath,

  1004. but in verse 24

  1005. we're given an

  1006. indication as to

  1007. Saul's motives.

  1008. He was serving

  1009. his own purposes.

  1010. He might have

  1011. thought that his

  1012. reputation was at

  1013. stake because he's

  1014. the king of Israel

  1015. after all.

  1016. And so he does

  1017. everything he can

  1018. and puts an oath

  1019. on a people to

  1020. fight until the

  1021. end of the day.

  1022. But Saul would

  1023. have known that if

  1024. victory happened on

  1025. the battlefield then

  1026. people scattered.

  1027. And what followed

  1028. was hours and hours

  1029. of chasing down the

  1030. fleeing enemy to

  1031. complete the victory.

  1032. Hours of running up

  1033. and down over and

  1034. around hills,

  1035. searching high and

  1036. low for enemies that

  1037. may be lurking.

  1038. And these men would

  1039. already be tired from

  1040. the emotional distress

  1041. of not knowing what

  1042. was happening at the

  1043. beginning of the day.

  1044. They would be

  1045. starving.

  1046. But Saul focuses on

  1047. his own reputation

  1048. instead of his men

  1049. and instead of God.

1050. And do you see how in

1051. verse 24 the focus is

  1052. very much on himself?

  1053. I have avenged myself

  1054. on my enemies.

  1055. Saul, wake up.

1056. Do you not see that it

1057. is God who is fighting

  1058. on Israel's behalf?

1059. Do you not see that God

  1060. should be your focus

  1061. because it is ultimately

1062. his people that you are

  1063. leading?

  1064. No.

  1065. In his foolishness he

1066. puts them under a vow

  1067. and weakens them.

  1068. Now Jonathan, his own

  1069. son, hadn't heard this

1070. vow and so in his

  1071. tired and hungry state

  1072. he eats some honey.

  1073. And he is warned

  1074. about the vow in

  1075. verse 29 to 30 and

  1076. he points out the

  1077. foolishness of his

  1078. own father.

  1079. Saul has made

  1080. trouble for the

  1081. country.

  1082. Now why did this

  1083. bring trouble?

  1084. Well there are two

  1085. reasons.

  1086. One, it meant

  1087. practically that they

  1088. were weak and they

  1089. were tired.

  1090. But two, because of

1091. what it led to in

  1092. verses 31 and 32.

1093. Once the oath was no

  1094. longer upon them,

  1095. notice the language

  1096. that the author uses.

  1097. They pounced on the

  1098. plunder and butchered

  1099. the animals on the

  1100. ground and ate the

  1101. meat together with the

  1102. blood.

  1103. This is the language

  1104. that we'd expect of a

  1105. pack of wolves.

  1106. They've been roaming the

1107. forest for days with no

  1108. food but then they

  1109. catch their prey and

  1110. then they devour.

1111. But sadly this is not

  1112. speaking about a pack

  1113. of wild animals.

  1114. This is speaking of

  1115. God's chosen people.

  1116. Who are acting like

  1117. wild animals and who

1118. are acting as if there

  1119. is no law.

  1120. The Israelites were not

  1121. allowed under the law

  1122. to consume blood and

1123. you can look that up

  1124. later on in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 12:23–24

  1125. 12 verses 23 to 24.

1126. But in their hunger and

  1127. desperation for food,

  1128. all of their thoughts

  1129. about God and about

  1130. living according to his

1131. law have gone out the

  1132. window.

  1133. Obedience to a self-centered

  1134. foolish oath led to

  1135. the disobedience to a

1136. good God and his law.

  1137. Saul sees this problem

  1138. and he jumps immediately

  1139. to problem solving as

  1140. opposed to getting to

  1141. the source of the

  1142. problem.

1143. Don't we do that all

  1144. the time?

1145. He doesn't ask why this

  1146. has happened which would

1147. reveal his own sin but

1148. instead he asks how he

  1149. can fix it.

1150. And he assumes again the

1151. role of a priest and

1152. builds an altar in verse

  1153. 35.

  1154. And we've seen this

  1155. before in the beginning

  1156. of chapter 13.

1157. Saul, when are you going

  1158. to learn your lesson?

  1159. And in this whole

1160. situation it seems as if

1161. Saul is trying to do the

  1162. impossible.

  1163. It's as if he's trying to

1164. earn back the favour of

  1165. God.

  1166. But there is nothing,

  1167. absolutely nothing that

1168. any human being can ever

1169. do that will earn them

  1170. God's favour.

1171. Saul is trying to work

  1172. himself into a right

  1173. relationship with God.

  1174. That is not possible.

1175. God is the one who

  1176. gifts faith.

1177. God is the one who

  1178. reveals himself to his

  1179. people.

1180. God is the one who

  1181. makes people right with

  1182. him.

  1183. No human effort can

  1184. make a person right

  1185. with God.

1186. That is a miracle that

  1187. God works in people's

  1188. lives.

1189. And in verse 36 again

  1190. we see Saul's foolishness

  1191. because he thinks that

  1192. he sorted it out.

1193. God is the one who

  1194. wants to keep pursuing

  1195. the Philistines.

  1196. Again, no reference of

  1197. God, no expression of

  1198. faith in him.

1199. And it's only when the

  1200. priest says, should we

1201. maybe ask God what he

  1202. thinks about all this?

1203. Does he say, oh yeah, I

  1204. forgot about that.

1205. And he thinks to inquire as

1206. to whether this is God's

  1207. will or not.

1208. And so we ask God in

1209. verse 37 and at the end

1210. of the verse we see the

  1211. devastating state of

  1212. Saul and Israel.

1213. God did not speak to

  1214. him.

  1215. God was withholding his

  1216. voice from Saul.

  1217. This silence from God

1218. led Saul to conclude the

1219. sin was in his camp.

1220. And so he calls all the

  1221. people together and they

1222. cast lots to see who is at

  1223. fault.

1224. And in verse 39, Paul

  1225. says, Saul says that

  1226. whoever is found guilty

  1227. will die.

  1228. So lots are cast.

1229. And it turns out that

  1230. Jonathan had broken the

1231. oath and took some honey.

1232. And do you see the

  1233. foolishness of this king?

1234. His priority is for him

  1235. to do everything and

1236. anything he can to get

1237. back in God's good books

1238. that he says in verse 44,

1239. may God deal with me be

1240. it ever so severely if

  1241. you do not die,

  1242. Jonathan.

1243. Saul was so eager to

  1244. make himself right with

1245. God and gain his favor

1246. that he was determined to

1247. even kill his own son.

1248. And the irony of this

  1249. whole situation is that

1250. Jonathan was the one who's

  1251. faithful.

1252. He was the one who took

  1253. matters into his own

1254. hands and trusted God to

  1255. work on his behalf.

1256. Jonathan was a man of

1257. faith and Saul is the man

  1258. of folly.

1259. Saul was putting his oath

1260. on par with the commands

  1261. of God.

1262. But I was thinking this

  1263. week, why didn't God

  1264. change the lot?

1265. And why didn't he make

1266. Saul out to be the guilty

  1267. one?

  1268. Because the passage is

1269. portraying him as the man

1270. who's not walking in the

  1271. will of God.

1272. So why did God let

  1273. Jonathan be picked?

1274. Well, as we look on,

1275. we see that the people

  1276. of Israel rally around

  1277. Jonathan to protect him.

  1278. And they're now not

  1279. listening to Saul's

  1280. commands.

  1281. Saul, the king who

1282. sets himself up as this

1283. mighty and strong one of

  1284. Israel, is being brought

  1285. to his knees.

  1286. He's being humbled.

1287. Whilst the humble one who

1288. is faithful and serving God

  1289. is protected.

1290. This episode results in the

  1291. people of Israel recognizing

  1292. God's work.

1293. And they say in verse 45

  1294. that Jonathan's deeds were

1295. the acts of a man who was

  1296. being helped by God.

1297. See, they're starting to lose

  1298. confidence in their king.

1299. Maybe they were starting to

1300. realize that God was right

  1301. after all.

  1302. What a surprise.

1303. And that this earthly king

1304. that they cried out for

  1305. wasn't actually what was

  1306. best for them.

1307. But Saul continued to reign

1308. as king and he continues to

1309. live in his folly and we'll

1310. see that as we go on.

1311. And we see his lack of

1312. confidence and faith in God

1313. and we get a hint of that

1314. again at the end in verse 52.

1315. Whenever Saul saw a mighty

1316. or brave man he took him

  1317. into his service.

1318. Saul is basing his confidence

  1319. in himself.

1320. In his own strength and in

  1321. his own army.

  1322. This is a self-centered leader

1323. whose life is marked by

  1324. folly.

1325. Are we people of faith or

  1326. folly?

1327. Saul was trying so hard to be

1328. made right with God again.

1329. He was thinking that he

  1330. could do that.

1331. And it looked as if that was

  1332. his main goal.

1333. But the reasoning behind that

  1334. was not God's glory.

1335. His reasoning for that was

  1336. himself.

1337. And the tragic thing about

1338. Saul's story and the reason

1339. that as we read this we can

1340. kind of feel sorry for him

  1341. can't we?

1342. Is because the tragedy that he

1343. faces that leads to his

  1344. foolishness is the same

  1345. tragedy that affects every

1346. single human heart in this

  1347. world.

1348. Saul's problem was that he

  1349. forgot God.

1350. Isn't that the case and the

  1351. danger for everyone?

1352. There are thousands of people

  1353. walking around Edinburgh this

  1354. evening.

1355. Millions of people in the world

1356. who are living lives marked by

  1357. folly.

1358. Living as if God doesn't exist.

1359. Refusing to acknowledge who he

1360. is and his will for their lives.

1361. Millions of people are living

1362. under the false assumption that

1363. they can make themselves right with

  1364. God.

1365. if they live good lives.

1366. If they treat people well.

1367. If they're kind to others.

1368. If they don't hurt anybody.

1369. Then surely they'll be good enough

1370. to reach this place that they call

  1371. heaven.

1372. And do you know what that means?

1373. That means that millions of people

1374. are dying and walking into an

1375. eternity without God with a false

  1376. sense of hope.

1377. God alone is the one who can save.

1378. God alone is the one who can make

  1379. people right with him.

1380. God alone is the one who takes

1381. people from being marked by folly

1382. to being marked by faith.

1383. If that is you this evening.

1384. If you are trying your best to reach

1385. God please stop because your efforts

  1386. are in vain.

1387. But instead obey God's word.

1388. trust in his ways and have faith in

1389. him because only then can you be

  1390. made right with him.

1391. God makes the first move.

1392. Let us not be like Saul.

  1393. Let's not forget God.

1394. Let's be people who are marked by

  1395. faith not by folly.

1396. Let's start living as if God exists

1397. and is alive because my friends he is.

1398. And as we draw to a close I want to

1399. say that this story is not just to

1400. tell us about two different reactions

  1401. to God.

1402. It isn't just there to teach us about

1403. godly leadership but it is there to

1404. teach us a much greater story.

1405. You see in Jonathan we see a man of

  1406. faith.

1407. We see the qualities of a leader.

1408. One who knows God's power.

  1409. Knows God's wisdom.

  1410. Knows God's goodness.

1411. And one who trusts God completely.

1412. But in comparison to Jesus Christ

1413. Jonathan is nothing but a faint shadow.

1414. See Jesus didn't climb over cliffs and

  1415. kill 20 enemies.

1416. He didn't spend hours chasing enemies

1417. down to defeat an army that would

1418. ultimately come back again in the

  1419. future.

  1420. No.

1421. Jesus went into the wilderness by the

1422. spirit and was tempted by Satan.

  1423. He was beaten.

  1424. He was whipped.

  1425. He was mocked.

1426. And yet he remained silent.

1427. And he walked up a hill with a cross

1428. on his back and was nailed to the tree

1429. in perfect obedience to the will of God

  1430. the Father.

1431. And he died a horrible death.

1432. But in the process of his agony he defeated

  1433. sin.

1434. Our true and lasting enemy that sets us on

1435. the path of an eternity of God's judgment.

1436. Jesus took the death that we deserve and he

1437. rose again defeating not only the powers of

1438. sin and Satan but he defeated death itself.

1439. And that's why later on in the New Testament

1440. in 1st Corinthians Paul the writer of the

  1441. letter can say this.

1442. Death has been swallowed up in victory.

1443. Where oh death is your victory?

1444. Where oh death is your sting?

1445. The sting of death is sin and the power of

1446. sin is the law but thanks be to God.

1447. He gives us the victory through who?

1448. Through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1449. Christ.

1450. This is the leader that we follow.

1451. This is the man whose life was marked by

1452. unfaltering obedience and trust in the will

  1453. and goodness of God.

1454. And this is the one in whom and through whom

1455. we can be made right with God.

1456. Jesus is the only answer.

1457. Are we people marked by faith or are we

  1458. people marked by folly?

1459. Think back to what the world deems to be

1460. foolish and what the world deems to be wise.

1461. See the opinion of the world regarding these

  1462. things is worthless.

1463. The only opinion that matters as we stand

1464. before God on that final day is God's and

1465. God's opinion of who we are.

1466. And my prayer is that every single person in this

1467. room tonight can say that our actions, our speech and

1468. our thoughts are characterized by a living faith in

  1469. the one triune God.

1470. The God who set the great plan of salvation for the world

  1471. into motion.

1472. The son who carried out that plan obediently died on a

1473. cross and rose again triumphantly.

1474. The Holy Spirit who dwells within every Christian and he was

1475. making us more into the image of Jesus Christ.

1476. If we trust in Jesus and if we live by the power of his

1477. spirit, then we are people of faith set apart by God and for

  1478. God.

1479. But if we reject Jesus and we walk away from him, then we are

  1480. foolish.

1481. Which path will you choose this evening?

1482. Are we going to be a people of faith or a folly?

  1483. Let's pray.

  1484. Let's pray.

1485. And just in the silence of our own hearts for a moment, let's

1486. reflect on our stance before the almighty God.

1487. O our great God and our redeemer, forgive us for the times that

1488. we have walked away from you and our lives have been marked by

  1489. foolishness.

1490. Thank you that through your son and his atoning death on the cross,

1491. we can know 100% that we are part of your family, a privilege that

  1492. we do not deserve.

1493. And yet in your goodness, in your faithfulness, you chose to set us

1494. free from the sin and the judgment that we deserve.

1495. Father, I pray this evening that our lives would be marked by a faith

1496. in you, the only one who deserves our lives.

1497. Help us live lives for your glory, for your honor and your fame.

1498. We ask this in your son's name.

  1499. Amen.
