  1. Well, thank you so much, Drew and Margo and Gary for leading us thus far.

  2. Friends, if you've got your Bibles, then please turn back to 1 Samuel 15.

  3. This is where we're going to be this evening.

  4. Continuing in our series, looking at the life of, well, I guess Saul and Samuel have been the two big players in what we've seen so far in this book.

  5. And God has so much to teach us tonight about what a life of obedience, loving obedience to him looks like.

  6. So why don't we pray and then we'll get to work in this passage together.

  7. Father, we pray that you would help us now as we turn to your precious word.

  8. We ask that we would know the leading of your spirit, that he would help us see something more of your greatness.

  9. And of the greatness of your son, Jesus Christ, whom we just sang about there, who is at the right hand of the father interceding for us.

  10. What a wonderful, amazing thought that is.

  11. And so we pray tonight would be for his glory and it would be for our upbuilding as your people here.

  12. Father, thank you that you hear us because we pray confidently in Jesus's name.

  13. Amen.

  14. Well, let me begin by asking you a question, a question I want you to keep in your minds as we travel through this chapter tonight.

  15. And here's the question.

  16. What truly delights the God of the universe?

  17. What truly delights the Lord?

  18. Can I suggest at the outset that whoever you are this evening, whatever is going on in your life, whatever is going on in your heart, whatever you think about this God,

  19. that if there is an answer to that question, and what I'm going to suggest is there is an answer to that question embedded in this chapter.

  20. If there is an answer to that question, then it is worthwhile our every thought trying to get to grips with it.

  21. What truly delights the Lord?

  22. Second question.

  23. What did 162,000 people in the UK pay to go and watch last year?

  24. Any takers?

  25. 162,000 people go, paid to go and watch last year.

  26. Anybody?

  27. 162,000 people paid to go and watch the biggest dog show and competition apparently on earth, which happens annually down in Birmingham, that we know as Crufts.

  28. Anyone's going to see Crufts?

  29. Nope, nobody's paid to go and see that one.

  30. Nope, I haven't either.

  31. Maybe watch a little bit of it in Channel 4.

  32. Watched a little dog jump over a thing.

  33. That's about as far as I got.

  34. But Crufts, now if you're up in your Crufts, you'll know that one of the most sought after titles at Crufts is the Obedience Championship.

  35. That is the one that everybody wants to win, apart from best in show.

  36. That is the one that everybody wants to win.

  37. Indeed, and I googled it this week, okay, I loved googling about Crufts.

  38. One dog lover's website called the Kennel Club.

  39. It said this, to become the Crufts Obedience Champion is the ultimate accolade in obedience.

  40. This is the one that you want to win.

  41. And if you're interested, it was won this year by Dot Watt and her sheepdog Zigdan.

  42. And there they are, looking very happy, and there indeed is proof that every dog has his day.

  43. Now why do I tell you that?

  44. Confession time, I don't even like dogs.

  45. Why do I tell you that?

  46. Because obedience is right at the heart of this chapter tonight.

  47. We've watched this man Saul, the king of Israel, in action over the past few weeks.

  48. And tonight, if you like, we're going to see how he gets on at this whole being obedient to God thing.

  49. Obedience is right at the heart of this chapter tonight.

  50. Remember, this is the whole very thing that God had said in Deuteronomy 17, that his king was to be marked by.

  51. And so to anchor us in tonight, let me just show you how this theme of obedience, it weaves its way all the way through this chapter.

  52. Here's a few of them tonight.

  53. Verse 1, Samuel says to Saul, follow with me.

  54. Listen.

  55. See the words?

  56. Listen now to the message of the Lord.

  57. Verse 11, God says to Samuel,

  58. Saul has not carried out my instructions.

  59. In other words, he didn't listen.

  60. Verse 19, Samuel asks Saul,

  61. Why did you not obey the Lord?

  62. Verse 26, Samuel says to Saul,

  63. You have rejected the word of the Lord.

  64. And finally, verse 22, which I think is the key verse for us tonight to see,

  65. that gets us right to the heart of this chapter.

  66. Samuel says to Saul,

  67. Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord?

  68. To obey is better than sacrifice,

  69. and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

  70. So, what truly delights the God of the universe?

  71. What truly delights this covenant God?

  72. Answer, wholehearted obedience to his word.

  73. You see, the heart is the heart of the challenge that's going to come to us tonight.

  74. The heart is what God is going to go after in each of us this evening as we look at Saul in this chapter.

  75. This God that we're dealing with here, this God is a jealous God.

  76. He's jealous not of, he's jealous for his people.

  77. The Lord is a jealous God, meaning that he wants the whole hearts of his people.

  78. He wants their total devotion.

  79. He wants all of their eyes.

  80. He wants all of their minds.

  81. He wants all of them.

  82. He wants their undivided loyalty.

  83. Because as our creator, not only is he the only one who can satisfy our souls,

  84. but he loves us too much to see our wayward hearts try and satisfy themselves with pretenders that won't satisfy.

  85. You see, this God tonight in this chapter is going to go after our hearts.

  86. He wants the whole hearts of his people.

  87. And in particular, he wants the whole heart of the king of his people.

  88. God's king is supposed to be marked by a resolute, all out.

  89. You have all of me.

  90. You have my whole heart.

  91. You have all of my obedience.

  92. Covenant commitment to Yahweh.

  93. That's my translation of obedience, by the way.

  94. He wants all of him.

  95. Obedience is right at the heart of this chapter tonight.

  96. Right at the heart of the chapter.

  97. So we pick it up at verse 1.

  98. He was Saul.

  99. Now, I think it's not stretching it too far to say about him, as we've tracked him over the last few weeks,

  100. that he's on the downward slide as king.

  101. He's a gifted politician.

  102. We'll give him that.

  103. He's an able fighter.

  104. We'll give him that.

  105. But he's a confused man because his heart is not wholly the Lord's.

  106. Now, if you flick back, God has already pronounced,

  107. back at verse 14 of chapter 13,

  108. that he will take the kingdom from Saul and give it to somebody else.

  109. Why?

  110. Because of Saul's disobedience.

  111. And God has his man in mind for this job.

  112. And what marks out this man?

  113. Well, unlike Saul, he will be a man who will be a man after God's own heart.

  114. And I wonder if you read that.

  115. We kind of...

  116. If you've been in church long enough, you know how the story goes, right?

  117. But if you read that chapter and you hear that, that's thrilling.

  118. That God's king, he's going to appoint somebody who's going to follow him with his whole heart.

  119. See, crucially, that's the kind of king that God wants.

  120. And crucially, that is the kind of king that God's people truly need.

  121. That's the king that we need.

  122. And so in this chapter, we see the Lord, he will finally reject Saul as king.

  123. And so of our question tonight is, what truly delights the Lord?

  124. The author, as it were, in this chapter, he presents it to us here in the negative, if you like.

  125. So in other words, as he shows us Saul in action, he's saying to us,

  126. here is what a life that doesn't please the Lord looks like.

  127. The first thing for us to see, verses 1 to 23, is that the Lord loathes partial compliance.

  128. Pick it up at verse 1.

  129. Samuel goes to Saul with a message.

  130. In the heart of the message, you'll see it at verse 3.

  131. It's right there.

  132. And if truth be told, it's quite shocking, is it not?

  133. Saul has to totally destroy the Amalekites and everything that belongs to them.

  134. And we have to pause there and admit that that is difficult for our modern minds to process.

  135. In fact, many skeptics of the Bible point to this kind of verse,

  136. and they point to it in disgust, as if to say, how could you believe in this God?

  137. I mean, Richard Dawkins, I looked him up this week, for example, says,

  138. episodes like this only go to show that the God of the Old Testament

  139. is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction.

  140. And if we're honest, these kind of verses can embarrass even the most mature of Christians.

  141. So I think it's worth pausing and asking ourselves,

  142. so we can train ourselves how to answer that question,

  143. but also so we can get our hearts around it.

  144. What is going on there?

  145. What is going on there?

  146. Well, the Amalekites are the people who attacked Israel after they'd crossed the Red Sea

  147. and they were heading for the Promised Land.

  148. And God had declared in Exodus 17, and apologies, I haven't got this on the screen,

  149. it would have been helpful.

  150. Exodus 17, God says,

  151. So that's Exodus 17.

  152. And here we are many, many, many years later,

  153. God having given these people plenty of time to change their ways,

  154. and have they changed their ways?

  155. Well, it would appear that they haven't.

  156. I mean, if you glance your eye to the end of the chapter and to verse 33,

  157. Samuel says to Agag, the king of the Amalekites,

  158. who's the figurehead of this people, if you like,

  159. as your sword has made woman childless,

  160. here's what he's done,

  161. as your sword has made woman childless,

  162. so will your mother be childless among women.

  163. So these people, as led by this king,

  164. are still marked by a hideous savagery.

  165. They have not learned their lesson.

  166. They have not changed their ways.

  167. As the first readers of this, I'm sure, as they read this,

  168. and they heard that God finally brought judgment on these people

  169. for how they were living,

  170. I'm sure that would have been a massive source of comfort to them,

  171. not of confusion.

  172. So here is God commanding Saul in this one-off act in history

  173. to bring justice to bear upon the Amalekites,

  174. the enemies of his people.

  175. Of course, friends,

  176. any time you read of a judgment of God in history,

  177. it's always pointing us to the final judgment of God

  178. at the end of history.

  179. When every wrong will be put to right,

  180. when accounts will be settled,

  181. and when God will have the final say.

  182. And I think that longing thing really struck me this week

  183. as I read the news.

  184. I don't know if you felt this

  185. when you read about those mothers in Venezuela.

  186. It was on the BBC News.

  187. Forced to give up their children at birth

  188. because so bad is the economic crisis in Venezuela

  189. that they've got very little option

  190. because they don't think they can keep that child alive.

  191. And the reason that that country,

  192. one of the reasons that it is in such economic crisis

  193. is largely down to the economic policies of their president.

  194. And it's trickling all the way down to the poorest of people,

  195. so much so that people are having to make that choice

  196. between keeping my baby or staying alive.

  197. And you read it and you think,

  198. come Lord Jesus.

  199. Come Lord Jesus.

  200. What a glorious thought to think

  201. that one day God will put all wrongs to right.

  202. And the question is,

  203. where will we be as we stand before him?

  204. So that's the command God gives to Saul.

  205. And Saul gathers, if you do the maths here,

  206. he gathers a vast army of some 210,000 men.

  207. That's a big, big army.

  208. The Kenites, one of whom was Moses' father-in-law, Jethro,

  209. they are spared because, the text tells us,

  210. they were kind to Israel on their journey to Canaan.

  211. And here's where we see Saul's partial obedience kick in.

  212. Come with me to verse 7.

  213. King Agag is kept alive.

  214. Now, why?

  215. Why?

  216. We don't know.

  217. The text is silent.

  218. But it may well be that Saul fancies a little political manoeuvre

  219. if he's keeping this king alive.

  220. He's kept him alive, along with the best of.

  221. The best of.

  222. That's the hits we're playing here, right?

  223. The best of.

  224. The sheep, the cattle, the fat calves, and the lambs.

  225. And just in case we hadn't picked up the hint,

  226. the author lets us know that everything that was weak was destroyed.

  227. But everything that was good was kept.

  228. Everything that was good was kept.

  229. And so we need to ask, where is Saul's heart in all of this?

  230. Where's his heart in all of this?

  231. What's going on in his mind?

  232. Answer, it's not set towards being obedient to the Lord.

  233. It's set towards delighting himself.

  234. And so verse 11, the God who knows all hearts.

  235. Verse 11, God regrets.

  236. Feel the force of that word.

  237. He regrets that he made Saul king.

  238. Not that God is saying that,

  239. oh, he realizes he's made a mistake here.

  240. That's not what's going on.

  241. More that God's heart breaks, it grieves.

  242. As he watches Saul's downward sin slide.

  243. He grieves the fact that Saul's sin has hardened Saul's heart towards the Lord.

  244. And it's interesting, isn't it, to read there,

  245. Samuel's reaction.

  246. What does he do?

  247. Does he rejoice?

  248. No, what does he do?

  249. He cries out.

  250. He cries out.

  251. Now the text, again, is silent as to why he does that.

  252. But is that not interesting as you read that through?

  253. Why is Samuel crying out to the Lord?

  254. Could it be, could it be that something of God's heart,

  255. as God grieves over what sin is doing in this man's heart,

  256. could it be that something of God's heart is showing itself in Samuel?

  257. How does Samuel feel?

  258. Remember Samuel, the man who anointed this king.

  259. Heartbroken, distraught, lamenting over what sin has done.

  260. The chaos that it is caused in someone else's life.

  261. I think that's what's going on here.

  262. And indeed, if you need a proof of where Saul's heart is,

  263. look at verse 12.

  264. What has he been doing this whole time?

  265. Has he been serving?

  266. Has he been sacrificing?

  267. What's he been doing?

  268. He's been setting up a monument in whose honor?

  269. His own.

  270. His own.

  271. So he's given himself the Grammy Award for Best Actor

  272. and that whole piece that's just gone.

  273. How self-obsessed is this man at this point?

  274. That he set up a monument in his own honor.

  275. And you see, when Samuel eventually gets to him,

  276. it's not Samuel that gets in the first word, it's Saul.

  277. I carried out the Lord's instructions.

  278. He screams in his face like an excited child

  279. trying to tell their parent what's happened.

  280. I carried out the Lord's instructions.

  281. He's clearly expecting a high five and a fist bump here,

  282. isn't he, from Samuel?

  283. But did you carry out the Lord's instructions, Saul?

  284. Did you carry it out fully?

  285. Or is this a bit like the child who's cleaned their room?

  286. Only for mum to walk in and it becomes clear that we have very different understandings

  287. of what cleaning means.

  288. Because Samuel hears a baba there and a muumuu there.

  289. Do you see it in the text?

  290. Who do you think you are fooling, Saul?

  291. Who do you think you are fooling?

  292. And here's the tragedy, I think, of this text.

  293. I think Saul's convinced himself

  294. that what he's actually doing

  295. is fully obeying the Lord.

  296. You get that impression as you read about him here, don't you?

  297. I mean, he offers an excuse, doesn't he,

  298. that it was his soldiers that spared those things, not him?

  299. That they are the ones responsible, not him?

  300. He couldn't help himself.

  301. He couldn't do anything about it.

  302. Interestingly, Saul's shifting the focus and the blame,

  303. just like Adam did in the Garden of Eden, didn't he?

  304. He shifted the blame.

  305. Didn't take responsibility for it.

  306. He shifted it.

  307. And they did so, he says,

  308. so that they could sacrifice to the Lord.

  309. But I don't think that's the case at all, do you?

  310. And verse 16, Samuel quite says,

  311. Samuel quite simply says, enough.

  312. Enough.

  313. And he reminds Saul of the grace and the favor

  314. that God has shown him.

  315. And simply asks, why?

  316. Why?

  317. Why did you not obey?

  318. But Saul disputes Samuel's claim and he says,

  319. I did obey.

  320. Again, do you see the deceitfulness of sin

  321. that work in this man's heart is totally clouded his judgment.

  322. He thinks that he's done a good thing.

  323. But notice Samuel's stinging lesson,

  324. not just for Saul,

  325. but for anyone who would pick this up in the years to come

  326. and read about Saul's life.

  327. What is it that truly delights the Lord?

  328. Well, here's what doesn't truly delight the Lord.

  329. Verse 22 and 23.

  330. Here's the question.

  331. Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices

  332. as much as in obeying the Lord?

  333. Here's the lesson.

  334. To obey is better than sacrifice

  335. and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

  336. Here's the comparison.

  337. For rebellion is like the sin of divination

  338. and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.

  339. And here's the summation.

  340. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,

  341. he has rejected you as king.

  342. Now what's going on there

  343. is that the Lord is saying

  344. that he doesn't want Samuel's stuff.

  345. He doesn't want Saul's stuff

  346. as much as he wants Saul's heart.

  347. There's a difference, isn't there,

  348. between a cold, robotic, distant kind of obedience

  349. and a loving one.

  350. Husbands will know there's a difference

  351. between giving your wife a card on Valentine's Day

  352. because you feel like it's what you should do,

  353. because you think it's what everyone else in the world is doing.

  354. There's a difference between that

  355. and giving a Valentine's Day card

  356. that says this is just a piece of paper,

  357. but behind it is a heart that says,

  358. I have eyes for you and you alone.

  359. There's a difference.

  360. What truly delights the Lord

  361. is a wholehearted, loving obedience

  362. that wants to say,

  363. Father, I love you.

  364. Here is all of me.

  365. Obedience to his word.

  366. Old Testament commentator Dale Ralph Davis

  367. puts it simply like this,

  368. external devotion is no substitute

  369. for internal submission.

  370. It's not a difference.

  371. You see, God is going after the hearts of his people.

  372. He's going after the heart of his king

  373. and he's going after our hearts tonight as well.

  374. Saul is being partially obedient to God's word

  375. and the Lord loathes it.

  376. And the second thing for us to see,

  377. verses 24 to 35,

  378. is that the Lord loathes superficial repentance.

  379. So, this case for the prosecution has been made

  380. and it would appear on the surface

  381. as we read about it here

  382. that Saul offers a hands up,

  383. you've got me,

  384. I'm guilty,

  385. here's the white flag kind of plea,

  386. doesn't it?

  387. Verse 24,

  388. he declares,

  389. I have sinned.

  390. I have sinned.

  391. This is what he says.

  392. I gave in to the men,

  393. he says.

  394. And right there we see,

  395. don't we,

  396. that Saul has a real fear of man problem.

  397. He lives for the pleasure,

  398. for the well-dones of man

  399. rather than the well-dones of God.

  400. He's concerned with his reputation.

  401. In his mind,

  402. God is small

  403. and man is big.

  404. And that's where his people pleasing comes from.

  405. That's where all of our people pleasing comes from.

  406. And we have a small view of God

  407. and a high view of man.

  408. Forgive my sin,

  409. he says.

  410. Isn't it interesting that

  411. he asked Samuel to forgive him

  412. rather than realizing that his sin

  413. is first and foremost against the Lord?

  414. But again,

  415. Samuel reiterates

  416. that it's Saul's rejection of the Lord

  417. that's led to the Lord's rejection of Saul.

  418. And the game's up at this point,

  419. isn't it?

  420. And as if things couldn't get any worse for him,

  421. in this act of desperation,

  422. as he grabs and rips Samuel's robe,

  423. Samuel says,

  424. that is but a visible parable for you

  425. about what will happen to you

  426. and your kingdom.

  427. I mean,

  428. when it's not going for you,

  429. it's really not going for you,

  430. isn't it?

  431. And see verse 28.

  432. The Lord,

  433. who never changes,

  434. his cast iron promise,

  435. guarantee,

  436. that he will now move to install

  437. this man,

  438. the man after his own heart,

  439. the better man

  440. as king.

  441. And you have to say,

  442. Saul's reaction to that is very telling.

  443. Really worth noticing this in the text

  444. and we'll maybe slow down just a little bit here.

  445. There appears to be a little hint of repentance,

  446. doesn't there,

  447. in Saul's actions?

  448. But if you look closely at what the text is telling us,

  449. Saul seems to be more concerned with his standing

  450. in the eyes of the elders of his people

  451. than he does on being right with God.

  452. That's really what seems to be going on

  453. in the depths of his heart.

  454. That's really what he seems to be after.

  455. And it shows by what he says to Samuel

  456. at the end of verse 30.

  457. And look at it if you've got it there

  458. because I think it's so important

  459. to what's going on in the text here.

  460. He says to Samuel,

  461. come back with me so that I may worship

  462. my God?

  463. No.

  464. Our God?

  465. No.

  466. Your God.

  467. That is so revealing, isn't it,

  468. of the true state of this man's heart.

  469. Your God.

  470. It's often the case I find in

  471. not just pastoral ministry

  472. but in just life in general,

  473. it's often the case that

  474. the comments that people make

  475. when their guard is down,

  476. the comments that people make

  477. in their everyday conversations with me

  478. is those that give me a little glimpse

  479. into what is really going on in their heart.

  480. And I think this is the real tragedy

  481. in this chapter.

  482. The passion in Saul's heart,

  483. the fire in his belly,

  484. the love for,

  485. the adoration for,

  486. the relationship with and devotion to Yahweh

  487. seems to have well and truly gone out.

  488. In fact, some commentators,

  489. if you read them,

  490. would go as far as to say

  491. if there was ever a fire

  492. in Saul's belly in the first place.

  493. Do you see?

  494. He's just lost his love for the Lord.

  495. Let me ask you in passing,

  496. can you see yourself

  497. in Saul's revealing words here?

  498. Are you here tonight

  499. and you sense that fire in your heart,

  500. not getting stronger,

  501. but growing weaker?

  502. And I've shared this before,

  503. but I think it's so telling

  504. and so insightful

  505. to something like this.

  506. The late Anglican minister

  507. and lecturer John Stott

  508. was once asked

  509. what his biggest fear was

  510. for the students

  511. who came to study under him.

  512. And he always said

  513. that his biggest fear

  514. was that in the eyes of many,

  515. God would move

  516. from being a source of delight

  517. to be enjoyed,

  518. to be being a thing,

  519. to be simply studied.

  520. Friends, I wonder

  521. if that's you tonight.

  522. Can I urge you

  523. to speak to somebody,

  524. to pray to somebody if it is?

  525. Maybe you can think of somebody

  526. in your own life

  527. who you know

  528. this might be the case for.

  529. Can I urge you maybe

  530. to speak to them

  531. and to pray for them

  532. and to ask how you can help them

  533. and to pray that tonight

  534. might be the night

  535. when something changes

  536. in your life.

  537. Think about it.

  538. I mean, what a waste of time

  539. this is on a Sunday.

  540. What a waste of time this is

  541. if we can't really be honest

  542. with one another

  543. about the thing

  544. that matters most in life

  545. and about what's really

  546. going on in our hearts.

  547. Because otherwise,

  548. we're just playing at this.

  549. Just like Saul,

  550. we're just playing at this.

  551. But what a call this is

  552. from our God

  553. to get serious with him

  554. and to come home.

  555. to come home.

  556. We love

  557. because he first loved us.

  558. I remember growing up in church

  559. there was that song

  560. that we used to sing

  561. written by a man,

  562. I think his name was

  563. Brian Dorkskin.

  564. And the chorus,

  565. it was really just a prayer

  566. and it simply went,

  567. don't let my love grow cold.

  568. I'm calling out,

  569. light the fire again.

  570. Don't let my vision die.

  571. I'm calling out,

  572. light the fire again.

  573. It was a prayer

  574. that said,

  575. God,

  576. help,

  577. ignite

  578. by your spirit

  579. the fire in my heart,

  580. the love for you

  581. that exists in me.

  582. It was interesting,

  583. I was sitting around,

  584. sitting in class this week

  585. and one guy piped up

  586. that he was a non-Christian

  587. for years

  588. and he sat in church

  589. a lot of his life

  590. and it was one song

  591. that did it for him

  592. and the Holy Spirit

  593. just moved into his life

  594. and it was a song,

  595. oh,

  596. I've totally forgotten,

  597. I should have written it down.

  598. It was a song,

  599. I'm giving you my all

  600. and I surrender all to you.

  601. That's the one,

  602. I surrender all to you

  603. and he said at that moment,

  604. years of just not

  605. understanding anything

  606. and God just moved in

  607. and broke his heart.

  608. I'm giving you my all,

  609. all that is within.

  610. I lay it all down

  611. for the sake of you,

  612. my king.

  613. I've got it now,

  614. right?

  615. That's the one.

  616. Do you need to stop

  617. and make that your prayer tonight?

  618. Do you need to pray

  619. that God by his spirit

  620. would rekindle that love

  621. that you once had for him?

  622. Do you see Saul's fire

  623. in his belly for the Lord

  624. would appear to have

  625. well and truly gone out

  626. and I'm sure

  627. that that is the core reason

  628. behind his lackadaisical approach

  629. to both his obedience

  630. and his repentance

  631. because it's not real to him

  632. and if Saul won't do it,

  633. Samuel will.

  634. You see at the end

  635. of the chapter

  636. and King Agag

  637. who clearly thinks

  638. verse 32

  639. that he's played

  640. an absolute blinder here

  641. and persuading Saul

  642. to keep him alive

  643. while his luck's just run out

  644. and Samuel puts him to death

  645. and again notice

  646. the bookend thoughts

  647. that drive this little section

  648. repeating the sentiments

  649. of verse 11.

  650. Samuel mourns for Saul

  651. and God regrets

  652. that he made Saul king

  653. because the Lord

  654. loathes partial compliance

  655. and the Lord loathes

  656. superficial repentance.

  657. Obedience,

  658. loving obedience

  659. is right at the heart

  660. of this chapter tonight.

  661. So what truly delights

  662. the Lord?

  663. What truly delights him

  664. according to this chapter?

  665. What does he say?

  666. Loving,

  667. wholehearted

  668. obedience

  669. to his word.

  670. This God

  671. is after the whole hearts

  672. of his people.

  673. He's after the whole hearts

  674. of his king.

  675. And as we read

  676. about Saul here

  677. you have to see

  678. it's a kind of tragic

  679. final nail in the coffin

  680. kind of chapter isn't it?

  681. And this is the point

  682. at which we're going to leave

  683. the book of 1 Samuel

  684. for now

  685. and we're going to have

  686. a little break

  687. for Christmas

  688. and New Year

  689. and we're going to return

  690. to it early next year

  691. because this is quite

  692. a transitional point

  693. in the book.

  694. Because if you glance

  695. your eye to 1 Samuel 16

  696. you'll see

  697. God reveals David

  698. as his new choice

  699. for king.

  700. David who will be

  701. unlike Saul

  702. a man after

  703. God's own heart

  704. and a king

  705. marked by covenant

  706. loyalty to Yahweh.

  707. That's David.

  708. But although David

  709. will be better

  710. to use the word

  711. of this chapter

  712. he will be better.

  713. He won't be perfect.

  714. We'll see him

  715. make mistakes.

  716. We'll see him

  717. make huge mistakes

  718. even bigger than Saul made.

  719. But it seems to me

  720. that David knew

  721. the God he was praying to

  722. and David knew

  723. what real repentance

  724. looks like

  725. where Saul didn't.

  726. But this book

  727. points us well

  728. beyond this king.

  729. It points us

  730. to the king

  731. who would come

  732. and it points us

  733. to the king

  734. friends that we

  735. so desperately need.

  736. Hebrews chapter 5

    Hebrews 5 chapter mention

  737. chapter 5

  738. chapter 5

  739. During the days of

  740. Jesus' life on earth

  741. he, Jesus,

  742. offered up prayers

  743. and petitions

  744. with fervent cries

  745. and tears

  746. to the one

  747. who could save him

  748. from death

  749. and he was heard.

  750. Why?

  751. Because of his

  752. reverent submission.

  753. Son though he was

  754. he learned

  755. what?

  756. Obedience

  757. from what he suffered

  758. and once made perfect

  759. he became the source

  760. of eternal salvation

  761. for all who would

  762. believe in him.

  763. See, Jesus,

  764. this king,

  765. God's king,

  766. he didn't just obey

  767. and offer a sacrifice.

  768. He obeyed to the point

  769. that he became

  770. the sacrifice

  771. for us.

  772. Here is the king

  773. whose life would be marked

  774. by perfect obedience.

  775. Here is the king

  776. who lived the life

  777. that we could not live.

  778. Do you know that?

  779. The depths of sin

  780. in your own heart?

  781. I find the more

  782. I go on as a Christian

  783. I'm more aware

  784. of the sin in my life

  785. than I ever was before

  786. but I am more aware

  787. of how gracious

  788. my God is.

  789. Jesus paid the penalty

  790. on the cross

  791. for my sin

  792. and he takes me

  793. into himself

  794. and he becomes

  795. a source of

  796. eternal salvation

  797. to use those words

  798. for all who would

  799. come to him

  800. and obey him.

  801. Crown him

  802. Lord of all.

  803. The words of John Newton,

  804. slave trader

  805. turned minister,

  806. he's got a wonderful story,

  807. wonderful testimony.

  808. He wrote this,

  809. I didn't realise

  810. how many poems

  811. John Newton wrote

  812. until I discovered

  813. them this week.

  814. Hundreds of poems.

  815. He writes this

  816. about what Jesus Christ

  817. meant to him

  818. the first time

  819. that he understood

  820. the gospel.

  821. Thus,

  822. while his death

  823. my sin displays

  824. in all its blackest hue,

  825. such is the mystery

  826. of grace

  827. it seals my pardon too.

  828. With pleasing grief

  829. and mournful joy

  830. my spirit now

  831. is filled

  832. and get this,

  833. that I should

  834. such a life destroy

  835. yet live by him

  836. I killed.

  837. What incredible grace.

  838. And as we see

  839. in this chapter

  840. the Lord pronounce

  841. over Saul

  842. I regret

  843. that I have made you king.

  844. I wonder if you thought

  845. about the pronouncement

  846. that God the Father

  847. would make over Jesus.

  848. At his baptism

  849. Mark chapter 1

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  850. and a voice came

  851. from heaven

  852. you are my son

  853. there's the pronouncement

  854. you are my son

  855. whom I love

  856. with you

  857. I am well pleased.

  858. Again at the transfiguration

  859. Mark 9

  860. then a cloud appeared

  861. and covered them

  862. and a voice came

  863. from the cloud

  864. this is my son

  865. whom I love.

  866. This is my son

  867. whom I love.

  868. And what follows next?

  869. Listen to him.

  870. Listen to him.

  871. Friends we are not

  872. made right with God

  873. and pray sin

  874. that this is not the case

  875. because of our

  876. listening and obeying.

  877. Right?

  878. None of us would stand

  879. if that were the case.

  880. We are right with God

  881. because of Christ

  882. and therefore

  883. our heart's response

  884. out of gratitude

  885. and love for him

  886. is to listen

  887. and to obey him.

  888. Paul writes this

  889. in Romans 12.

  890. Therefore I urge you

  891. brothers and sisters

  892. in view of God's mercy

  893. to offer your bodies

  894. as a living sacrifice

  895. holy and pleasing to God.

  896. This is your true

  897. and proper worship.

  898. Now as we finish up tonight

  899. is that not a wonderful thought

  900. that you and I can please

  901. we can delight

  902. the almighty God in heaven

  903. our father

  904. through our everyday

  905. obedience to him.

  906. Our everyday obedience

  907. to him

  908. can bring him pleasure.

  909. Friends that should

  910. change the way

  911. that you and I

  912. approach our days.

  913. That should change

  914. the way that you and I

  915. approach our jobs.

  916. That should change

  917. the way that you and I

  918. use our money.

  919. That should change

  920. the way you and I

  921. have our everyday

  922. conversations

  923. because what is it

  924. that truly delights

  925. the Lord?

  926. wholehearted

  927. loving obedience

  928. to him.

  929. Now we started

  930. thinking about Crufts

  931. as we close

  932. let me just

  933. tell you a story

  934. about another dog

  935. that I was reading

  936. about this week.

  937. I read about them a lot

  938. I really don't like them

  939. but here's another dog.

  940. I didn't realise this

  941. until a couple of years ago

  942. did you know HMV?

  943. It stands for

  944. his master's voice.

  945. I did not know that

  946. until a couple of years ago.

  947. Every day is a school day

  948. right?

  949. I love the story

  950. of Nipper the HMV dog.

  951. The story goes

  952. that when Nipper's owner

  953. Mark died

  954. his brother Francis

  955. inherited three things

  956. Nipper the dog

  957. a gramophone

  958. and the records

  959. of Mark singing

  960. and every time

  961. Francis used to

  962. play the recordings

  963. even though

  964. his master

  965. wasn't physically present

  966. what little Nipper

  967. would do

  968. is that he would

  969. listen

  970. he would hear

  971. and he would just

  972. come and sit

  973. and listen

  974. at the foot

  975. of the gramophone

  976. and that's what he did

  977. that's what he wanted

  978. to be

  979. and friends

  980. as we close up

  981. this evening

  982. let me ask you simply

  983. are you listening

  984. to your master's voice?

  985. Do you know his voice?

  986. Do you know

  987. the leading of his spirit?

  988. Do you rejoice

  989. that you can call him

  990. father?

  991. And does the Lord

  992. have your whole heart?

  993. What is it

  994. that truly delights

  995. the Lord?

  996. Whole hearted

  997. loving

  998. obedience

  999. to him

  1000. teach us

  1001. Lord

  1002. full obedience

  1003. holy

  1004. reverence

  1005. true humility

  1006. test our thoughts

  1007. and our attitudes

  1008. in the radiance

  1009. of your purity

  1010. cause our faith

  1011. to rise

  1012. cause our eyes

  1013. to see

  1014. your majestic

  1015. love and authority

  1016. words of power

  1017. that can never fail

  1018. let their truth

  1019. prevail

  1020. over unbelief

  1021. Amen

  1022. why don't I pray

  1023. and then we'll

  1024. stand to sing

  1025. our closing song

  1026. Heavenly Father

  1027. we would worship

  1028. you tonight

  1029. Father we would

  1030. declare that there

  1031. is simply none

  1032. like you

  1033. Father we would

  1034. think of the words

  1035. of the psalmist

  1036. who would declare

  1037. who are we

  1038. that you are

  1039. mindful of us

  1040. Oh Heavenly Father

  1041. we thank you for

  1042. our time together

  1043. this evening

  1044. and we pray

  1045. that you would

  1046. help us by your

  1047. spirit to be

  1048. those who

  1049. lovingly

  1050. and wholeheartedly

  1051. obey you

  1052. who are ever

  1053. attentive to the

  1054. voice of our

  1055. saviour Jesus

  1056. Christ

  1057. who are ever

  1058. responding to

  1059. the leading of

  1060. your spirit

  1061. as he leads us

  1062. further into

  1063. knowledge of

  1064. Jesus Christ

  1065. but Father we

  1066. know our own

  1067. hearts

  1068. we know our

  1069. proneness to

  1070. wander

  1071. and so Father

  1072. we pray that

  1073. you would take

  1074. and seal our

  1075. hearts

  1076. and seal them

  1077. for your

  1078. courts above

  1079. Father we

  1080. love you

  1081. thank you for

  1082. this evening

  1083. in Jesus name

  1084. we pray

  1085. Amen
