  1. Well, good morning, everyone. If you have a Bible there, then grab it and turn to Colossians chapter 2.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  2. This is where we're going to be this morning, verses 6 to 15.

  3. And God has so much to teach us this morning as we turn to his inspired word.

  4. So why don't we just, as you're turning there, let's just pause our hearts and let's just still ourselves and let's pray as we come to his word this morning.

  5. Heavenly Father, we thank you so much that what we have in our hands is no ordinary book.

  6. This is your inspired word. It is your word.

  7. And so, Father, we ask that your spirit would come now and he would help keep our minds' attention.

  8. And that he would stoke our hearts' affection for your son, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

  9. So if you've got chapter 2 there, let's read verses 6 to 15.

  10. This is where we are this morning.

  11. Verses 6 to 15 of chapter 2.

  12. So Paul, writing to these Colossian Christians, he writes this.

  13. So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him,

  14. strengthened in the faith as you were taught and overflowing with thankfulness.

  15. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy,

  16. which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.

  17. For in Christ, all the fullness of the deity lives in bodily form.

  18. And in Christ, you have been brought to fullness.

  19. He is the head over every power and authority.

  20. In him, you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands.

  21. Your whole self, ruled by the flesh, was put off when you were circumcised by Christ,

  22. having been buried with him in baptism,

  23. in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God who raised him from the dead.

  24. When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh,

  25. God made you alive with Christ.

  26. He forgave us all our sins,

  27. having cancelled the charge of our legal indebtedness,

  28. which stood against us and condemned us.

  29. He has taken it away,

  30. nailing it to the cross,

  31. and having disarmed the powers and authorities,

  32. he made a public spectacle of them,

  33. triumphing over them by the cross.

  34. Amen.

  35. This is God's word to us this morning.

  36. So, to kick us off,

  37. when was the last time you grabbed a real bargain?

  38. Right?

  39. A real bargain.

  40. This kind of comes part of the territory of being Scottish.

  41. We love a bargain.

  42. Nothing excites me more than a discount aisle in Tesco,

  43. and I'm not exaggerating there.

  44. When was the last time you grabbed a bargain?

  45. Because I was reading this week about a woman who bought this bowl

  46. at a car boot sale in America,

  47. and I think you'll agree that's a pretty ordinary looking bowl.

  48. Now, I don't know what was going through her head as she bought it.

  49. Maybe she was thinking it would be nice on her mantelpiece,

  50. or it would be good to chuck her keys into,

  51. or something like that.

  52. Whatever she had in mind,

  53. she managed to haggle a deal,

  54. love a haggle,

  55. haggle a deal,

  56. to get this bowl for $3.

  57. A few years later,

  58. someone else looked at that bowl

  59. and uttered the words,

  60. do you know what you've got there?

  61. Because that was a rare,

  62. a thousand-year-old Chinese bowl

  63. dating back to the time of one of China's most distinguished dynasties.

  64. In actual fact,

  65. that bowl that she bought for $3

  66. was worth $2.2 million.

  67. Now, why do I tell you that?

  68. Because as I've been hanging out with Paul this week

  69. in these verses in Colossians,

  70. they've reminded me of that lady

  71. who's paid $3 for that bowl.

  72. Because here is Paul,

  73. and if you like,

  74. what he's doing in these verses

  75. is he's saying to these Christians

  76. that he's writing you to,

  77. do you know what you've got here?

  78. Do you know what you've got here?

  79. Look at verse 6.

  80. Do you see it?

  81. They have something.

  82. What does he write?

  83. Just as you what?

  84. Received.

  85. They've got something.

  86. As in, they've been given

  87. and they've taken hold of

  88. this great gift that God has given them.

  89. And the great gift that God has given them

  90. is not possessions.

  91. The great gift that God has given them

  92. is a person.

  93. They've Christ.

  94. That's what they've got.

  95. True for every single believer here

  96. this morning,

  97. and ever since this letter was written,

  98. we have Christ.

  99. Now you may have picked it up

  100. as we read it through there,

  101. just how many times

  102. Paul uses that phrase,

  103. in him.

  104. Did you get that in the reading?

  105. In him.

  106. In him.

  107. In fact, let me hit you

  108. with just some key Colossian stats.

  109. Okay?

  110. That phrase, in him,

  111. is used 15 times

  112. in this letter,

  113. as I count them,

  114. and seven of them,

  115. that's just under half,

  116. come in these ten verses.

  117. Track with me.

  118. In him, verse 6.

  119. In him, verse 7.

  120. In him, verse 9.

  121. In him, verse 10.

  122. In him, verse 11.

  123. With him, verse 12.

  124. With him, verse 13.

  125. Seven of them.

  126. Now why?

  127. Why does Paul do that?

  128. Two reasons, I reckon.

  129. So that their eyes would be directed

  130. off of themselves to him,

  131. to Christ.

  132. Do you not know that to be true

  133. in your own life?

  134. That's what I pray for

  135. more than anything else,

  136. that God would help me

  137. take my eyes off myself

  138. and fix them on Christ.

  139. So that they would see him.

  140. But more than that,

  141. in him,

  142. is what they are.

  143. Do you see?

  144. Paul is drawing their minds

  145. to their new identity

  146. that they have

  147. in

  148. Christ.

  149. Jesus has made them

  150. his own.

  151. This is what he's saying.

  152. He has, as it were,

  153. he's taken you

  154. into himself.

  155. This is the new you.

  156. This is who you are.

  157. And probably more accurately,

  158. this is whose you are.

  159. You are Christ's.

  160. Do you see what he's saying?

  161. This is your identity.

  162. Now think about it.

  163. There are

  164. all sorts of places

  165. that you and I

  166. can look to

  167. for our identity

  168. in life.

  169. We can look to

  170. any number of things

  171. in life

  172. that we want

  173. to define

  174. who we are.

  175. Our jobs,

  176. our relationship status,

  177. our gender,

  178. where we go to school,

  179. where we went to university,

  180. our first job

  181. that we've got,

  182. the whereabouts

  183. of the house

  184. that we live in,

  185. the catchment area

  186. that we live in,

  187. our kids go to that school,

  188. the kind of car

  189. that we drive,

  190. all kind of things

  191. that we can look to

  192. to define us in life,

  193. who we are.

  194. But whoever you are

  195. here today,

  196. and whatever you think

  197. about this God,

  198. let me give you

  199. something to chew on

  200. as we travel through

  201. these verses,

  202. okay?

  203. This is

  204. the identity

  205. that you and I

  206. were made for,

  207. right here.

  208. A life lived

  209. in relationship

  210. with the God

  211. who made us,

  212. the God

  213. who loves us,

  214. and the God

  215. who knows us.

  216. Right here,

  217. this is the identity

  218. that you and I

  219. were made for.

  220. Our little girl,

  221. Grace,

  222. she's got a wooden

  223. train set

  224. that she loves

  225. to play to.

  226. This is the toy

  227. of the moment,

  228. wooden train set,

  229. and on the train set

  230. she's got a little

  231. battery-powered train

  232. that goes round

  233. and round this track.

  234. But what she's done

  235. recently,

  236. it's her new

  237. favourite thing to do,

  238. is to take the little

  239. battery-powered train

  240. off of the track

  241. and let it run

  242. its course.

  243. Honestly,

  244. the number of times

  245. that I've collected

  246. that train

  247. from under the sofa,

  248. I could not tell you,

  249. okay,

  250. but this is her favourite

  251. game at the moment.

  252. Take it off the tracks

  253. and let it run.

  254. Now,

  255. you could argue

  256. that that train

  257. is free,

  258. yeah,

  259. because it's off the tracks,

  260. it's doing its own thing,

  261. it's no longer constrained

  262. by the tracks,

  263. it's free to go.

  264. Or,

  265. you could strongly suggest

  266. that when the train's

  267. on the tracks,

  268. it's doing the very thing

  269. that it was

  270. made to do.

  271. Friends,

  272. right here

  273. is the identity

  274. that you and I

  275. were made for.

  276. These verses tell us

  277. about life on the tracks.

  278. Or as the Westminster

  279. Shorter Catechism

  280. puts it,

  281. let me get my geek

  282. on for you,

  283. okay,

  284. question,

  285. what is the chief end

  286. of man?

  287. Answer,

  288. man's chief end

  289. is to glorify God

  290. and to enjoy him

  291. forever.

  292. There is life's purpose,

  293. right there.

  294. Paul wants these

  295. Christians to see

  296. the enormity

  297. of what they have

  298. in Christ

  299. and he says,

  300. do you know

  301. what you've got here?

  302. And in terms of

  303. what they have in Christ,

  304. there are two big things

  305. that he wants them

  306. to grasp from verse 9.

  307. But before we get there,

  308. see the appeal

  309. that he makes to them

  310. in verses 6 and 7,

  311. which I think

  312. is a big imperative

  313. of this letter.

  314. It's a big thing

  315. that he wants them to do.

  316. And if you wanted

  317. to sum it up

  318. in a phrase,

  319. this is what I try

  320. and do,

  321. this is how my mind works,

  322. okay,

  323. the phrase that stays

  324. is that the way in

  325. is the way on,

  326. okay,

  327. the way in

  328. is the way on.

  329. Look what he writes.

  330. So then,

  331. just as you received

  332. Christ as Lord,

  333. continue,

  334. as in,

  335. keep going,

  336. keep on going,

  337. doing what?

  338. Living your lives

  339. in him.

  340. Or if you've got

  341. an ESV Bible there,

  342. it says,

  343. walk in him,

  344. doesn't it?

  345. Walk in him.

  346. I love that word,

  347. walk,

  348. because it's a just

  349. keep on,

  350. keeping on kind of word.

  351. Keep on,

  352. keeping on.

  353. It's an everyday word.

  354. Keep on living

  355. your lives in Christ.

  356. Everyday,

  357. everyday.

  358. So the everyday stuff

  359. that you and I do

  360. in our lives,

  361. the school run,

  362. the big shop,

  363. the homework,

  364. the downtime,

  365. the gym regime,

  366. do it all conscious

  367. of your new identity

  368. in Jesus Christ.

  369. Walk in him.

  370. Do you feel it?

  371. Walk in him.

  372. Every day of your life,

  373. walk in him.

  374. Rooted and built up in him,

  375. strengthened in the faith

  376. as you were taught.

  377. So put the roots of your life

  378. deep down into Christ.

  379. Get grounded in him.

  380. Get anchored in him.

  381. And as you do that,

  382. draw nourishment,

  383. be transformed,

  384. and grow in godliness

  385. as the sap of the Spirit

  386. works its way

  387. through your life.

  388. And what will be

  389. the overflow of that?

  390. Thankfulness.

  391. Thankfulness.

  392. It's a wonderful word,

  393. is it not?

  394. I was thinking this week,

  395. how much joy

  396. in the Holy Spirit

  397. do we miss out on

  398. because we're not

  399. a very thankful people?

  400. Thankfulness.

  401. Friends,

  402. is that not the fruit

  403. that you want to see

  404. in your life?

  405. Thankfulness.

  406. Thankfulness.

  407. Thankfulness.

  408. Well,

  409. key to this,

  410. if it is,

  411. is for us to see

  412. the natural order.

  413. In other words,

  414. how this change

  415. comes about

  416. because this is not

  417. an outside-in

  418. kind of change.

  419. It's not an outside-in

  420. kind of change.

  421. This is an inside-out

  422. kind of change.

  423. And this is the only change

  424. that will work.

  425. Why?

  426. Because the heart

  427. of the problem

  428. is the problem

  429. of the heart.

  430. We need new ones.

  431. That's the problem.

  432. We need new ones.

  433. We need changed ones.

  434. We need cleansed ones.

  435. And praise God,

  436. that is what He has done

  437. for us

  438. in Jesus Christ.

  439. We have new hearts.

  440. Praise God

  441. for His grace.

  442. We have new hearts

  443. because of what we saw

  444. last week at verse 27.

  445. God lives in our hearts

  446. from the very moment

  447. that you and I received

  448. Jesus Christ.

  449. That's mind-blowing

  450. that He has taken up

  451. residence in the hearts

  452. of His people.

  453. And He's changed us.

  454. And He's committed

  455. to changing us

  456. from the inside out.

  457. Friends,

  458. the way in

  459. is the way on.

  460. And so good

  461. is what they have.

  462. I think this is why

  463. Paul warns them

  464. so strenuously

  465. at verse 8

  466. about entertaining

  467. those

  468. who would say to them

  469. that the way in

  470. is not

  471. the way on.

  472. These false teachers,

  473. remember we've seen them

  474. over the last few weeks,

  475. are somewhere

  476. in the background

  477. of this church.

  478. Paul says,

  479. don't let them take,

  480. don't let them

  481. take you captive.

  482. He's getting them

  483. to think about a ship.

  484. What you don't want

  485. is people smuggling

  486. on board your ship

  487. and robbing you

  488. blind of your

  489. precious cargo.

  490. Don't let them

  491. take you captive.

  492. And that's what

  493. these teachers will do

  494. if you listen to them

  495. and if you take to heart

  496. what they are saying.

  497. People perhaps

  498. who are peddling

  499. a special kind

  500. of circumcision,

  501. a special kind

  502. of baptism,

  503. a special kind

  504. of outward act

  505. that if you did it

  506. then it taps you

  507. into some kind

  508. of spiritual fullness

  509. of an experience.

  510. But whatever it was,

  511. I think the heart

  512. of their message

  513. is that true

  514. spiritual change

  515. and growth

  516. is to be found

  517. outside of Christ.

  518. And what does Paul call it?

  519. Do you see the word there?

  520. Hollow.

  521. It's hollow.

  522. As in,

  523. there's nothing there.

  524. It's empty.

  525. Remember that experience

  526. when you were young

  527. and the first time

  528. you ever got given

  529. a big giant chocolate egg?

  530. Do you remember that?

  531. Remember thinking to yourself,

  532. that whole thing

  533. is chocolate.

  534. And then you bit into it

  535. and boy,

  536. had Cadbury's let you down.

  537. Hollow.

  538. Hollow.

  539. This is what he's saying.

  540. It looks great

  541. on the outside

  542. but there's nothing

  543. to it when you get

  544. to the inside.

  545. Why?

  546. Because I think

  547. the things that they are

  548. promoting are simply

  549. human ways of thinking.

  550. Do you see what he says?

  551. Worldly philosophies

  552. dressed up

  553. in spiritual clothing.

  554. And the reason

  555. that these things

  556. can't work,

  557. the reason

  558. that these philosophies

  559. can't work

  560. is because they've got

  561. the order wrong.

  562. What these people

  563. are promoting

  564. is an

  565. outside-in

  566. kind of change.

  567. And it just doesn't work.

  568. And friends,

  569. we might not be facing

  570. the same philosophies,

  571. the same human tradition,

  572. challenges that these

  573. Colossians are facing,

  574. but that way of thinking

  575. still rings true today

  576. in every single one

  577. of our lives

  578. as we live our lives

  579. in this world.

  580. When you see that

  581. Jet 2 advert

  582. that tells you

  583. that going on that

  584. holiday break

  585. will bring you

  586. that inner sense of peace,

  587. the inner sense of calm

  588. that you so desperately need.

  589. And I remember

  590. in the office

  591. I used to work in,

  592. people used to come back

  593. from holiday

  594. and they used to use

  595. the same phrases

  596. again and again and again,

  597. so much so that I

  598. just created a little game

  599. called Back to Work Bingo.

  600. Okay?

  601. What do they used to say?

  602. That break seems like

  603. a distant memory.

  604. Dick.

  605. Back to the coal face.

  606. Tick.

  607. Another day,

  608. another dollar,

  609. or as I like to call it,

  610. another round,

  611. another pound.

  612. Tick.

  613. In other words,

  614. that did not deliver

  615. lasting change.

  616. I've climbed the ladder,

  617. I've hit the snake

  618. and I'm right back

  619. to where I was before.

  620. And I think down

  621. where we live,

  622. the charity shops

  623. are stocked

  624. with designer clothes.

  625. Why?

  626. Well, presumably

  627. because somebody

  628. saw them online

  629. and bought it

  630. thinking this will do nicely,

  631. wore it for a while

  632. and a while later

  633. just got bored of it

  634. and thought,

  635. do you know what?

  636. Charity shop.

  637. Previous generation,

  638. you had one job for life.

  639. Today,

  640. it's not uncommon

  641. to have multiple careers,

  642. let alone multiple jobs

  643. because we think

  644. if we just change

  645. the external,

  646. if we just change that,

  647. then that will bring

  648. lasting inner change.

  649. ways of thinking

  650. based on the faulty hope

  651. that the external

  652. will change the internal.

  653. And the thing is

  654. that the outside-in

  655. kind of approach,

  656. it cannot deliver

  657. on what it promises.

  658. And maybe not in ways

  659. that we would immediately

  660. think about,

  661. nor by the means

  662. that we would immediately

  663. care for,

  664. nor to a time scale

  665. that we would immediately

  666. subscribe to,

  667. the inside-out change

  668. that God brings

  669. by his indwelling spirit.

  670. It can

  671. and it does

  672. bring lasting change

  673. and one day

  674. that change

  675. will be eternal.

  676. Little wonder

  677. that Paul says

  678. continue to live

  679. your lives rooted in him.

  680. Little wonder he says

  681. do you know

  682. what you've got here?

  683. And so in the time

  684. remaining friends,

  685. I just want to pick out

  686. the two F's

  687. that Paul uses

  688. to help them see

  689. what they have in Christ.

  690. These will be really quick,

  691. okay?

  692. Firstly,

  693. what do they have?

  694. Nine to twelve.

  695. They have fullness.

  696. They have fullness.

  697. He draws their attention

  698. to who Jesus is.

  699. Who is he?

  700. He is God in the flesh.

  701. The deity dwells in him.

  702. In other words,

  703. if you want to know

  704. what God is like,

  705. you look to Jesus.

  706. And what is he?

  707. He is the supreme.

  708. He is the head

  709. over every rule

  710. and authority.

  711. And in him

  712. is fullness.

  713. Now follow the logic here.

  714. You see,

  715. you see,

  716. God is not in the business

  717. of saving us

  718. to shortchange us.

  719. What would be the point

  720. of him doing that?

  721. He has set us apart

  722. for himself.

  723. I think that's what

  724. the circumcision language

  725. there is about.

  726. He has set us apart

  727. for himself.

  728. And he's identified

  729. himself with us

  730. and us with him

  731. in his death

  732. and resurrection.

  733. That's the baptism

  734. language there.

  735. And he's made us his own

  736. in order to display

  737. the glory of his

  738. transforming grace

  739. to the world

  740. in us

  741. as he transforms

  742. us by his grace

  743. from the inside

  744. out.

  745. Therefore,

  746. because of

  747. who he is,

  748. right,

  749. who he is

  750. and where he is,

  751. God will supply

  752. the wisdom

  753. that we need

  754. to live the Christian life.

  755. God will supply

  756. the power

  757. that we need

  758. to live the Christian life.

  759. God will supply

  760. the resources

  761. that you and I

  762. need to live

  763. the Christian life.

  764. The goal

  765. of the Christian life,

  766. which is to be

  767. more transformed

  768. into the likeness

  769. of Jesus Christ

  770. for the glory of God.

  771. You see, friends,

  772. making us holy

  773. is God's

  774. unwavering agenda

  775. until he takes us

  776. home to be

  777. with him.

  778. And so the question

  779. that would come

  780. at us today

  781. is stemming

  782. from our union

  783. with Christ,

  784. right,

  785. we're in him,

  786. is do we know

  787. the communion

  788. with Christ

  789. that stems

  790. from our union

  791. with him?

  792. Friends,

  793. do you know him?

  794. Do you know him

  795. every day?

  796. Walking in him

  797. every day,

  798. going to the storehouses

  799. of his grace,

  800. asking him

  801. that he would help us

  802. to know him more.

  803. See,

  804. these false teachers

  805. are telling you,

  806. says Paul,

  807. that you lack.

  808. Paul says,

  809. in Christ,

  810. Christ in you,

  811. you have fullness

  812. of life.

  813. You have everything

  814. that you need.

  815. There's the first F,

  816. fullness.

  817. The second F,

  818. what do they have?

  819. Verses 13 to 15,

  820. they have forgiveness.

  821. Spiritually speaking,

  822. in their previous life,

  823. they were dead.

  824. Do you see that language?

  825. They were dead.

  826. Dead person,

  827. what do they need?

  828. They don't need

  829. resuscitation.

  830. Okay,

  831. I don't care what kind

  832. of first aid badges

  833. you have,

  834. or the course

  835. that you've been on,

  836. or the mouth-to-mouth

  837. that you've learned,

  838. none of that is going

  839. to work on a dead person.

  840. What does a dead person need?

  841. Resurrection.

  842. Resurrection.

  843. Resurrection.

  844. And God,

  845. who spoke life

  846. into being

  847. in the beginning,

  848. spoke life

  849. into their beings

  850. and gave them life.

  851. And what does it say?

  852. And he made them

  853. alive with Christ.

  854. Alive with Christ.

  855. And how was he able

  856. to do that?

  857. Because Jesus dealt

  858. with our biggest problem.

  859. Now follow with me

  860. this language

  861. because it is so vital

  862. for us to see.

  863. Verse 13,

  864. he forgave us.

  865. Do you see it?

  866. If you're struggling

  867. with guilt here this morning,

  868. all of us,

  869. I'm sure that is.

  870. These are the verses for us.

  871. Verse 13,

  872. he forgave us.

  873. Of what?

  874. All of our sins.

  875. Do you feel the totality

  876. of that word?

  877. All of our sins.

  878. Not some of them.

  879. Not the wee ones.

  880. Not the majority

  881. of our sins.

  882. All of our past,

  883. present,

  884. and future sins.

  885. He paid for them.

  886. He paid for them.

  887. All the things

  888. that you and I

  889. have done wrong.

  890. First and foremost

  891. against this holy God.

  892. All of them.

  893. Get your head around

  894. that sum in your head.

  895. All of them.

  896. Gone.

  897. Dealt with.

  898. Settled.

  899. How?

  900. Because Jesus Christ,

  901. as we were singing earlier,

  902. paid for them.

  903. Friends,

  904. I don't know about you,

  905. but when it comes

  906. to my sin,

  907. I know that I have

  908. racked up a pretty

  909. whopping bill.

  910. I mean,

  911. it is a whopper.

  912. And truth be told,

  913. I have got no idea

  914. how big that bill

  915. really is.

  916. And the one thing

  917. that I do know

  918. is that it is only

  919. going one way.

  920. And Paul says rightly

  921. that your sin bill

  922. has stood against you.

  923. It condemned you

  924. to justly

  925. having to face

  926. God's wrath,

  927. that is his righteous

  928. anger against our sin.

  929. And you had no hope

  930. and indeed you had

  931. no desire

  932. ever seeing

  933. that bill

  934. paid back.

  935. I think we're meant

  936. to feel the gravity

  937. of this here.

  938. Our sin is serious

  939. against this holy God.

  940. But incredibly,

  941. Jesus stepped in

  942. and if you like,

  943. he took

  944. our bill of sin

  945. and he said,

  946. let me get that.

  947. Let me get that.

  948. Let me take responsibility

  949. for that.

  950. And he took it with him

  951. all the way

  952. to the cross.

  953. And your bill

  954. and my bill of sin

  955. was nailed to the cross

  956. with him

  957. and now it says

  958. all over in capital letters,

  959. not guilty.

  960. It says written

  961. in his blood,

  962. paid for.

  963. Paid for,

  964. dealt with,

  965. cancelled.

  966. I remember singing

  967. a song when I was

  968. growing up

  969. by a guy called

  970. Tim Hughes

  971. and it was called

  972. See His Love.

  973. And one of the verses

  974. went,

  975. greater love

  976. no one could ever show.

  977. Mercy so undeserved,

  978. freedom I should not know.

  979. All of my sin,

  980. all of my hidden shame

  981. died with him

  982. on the cross,

  983. eternity one

  984. for us.

  985. Such love,

  986. such love

  987. is this for me.

  988. You see friends,

  989. God doesn't say to us

  990. in his word,

  991. he doesn't say to us

  992. in the Bible,

  993. guess how much I love you.

  994. Go on,

  995. have a guess,

  996. guess how much I love you.

  997. He says in his word,

  998. look at my son

  999. on the cross

  1000. dealing with your sin

  1001. and see how much

  1002. I love you.

  1003. I'll just pause there

  1004. for a minute friends.

1005. Do you need to soak that in

1006. that all of your sin,

1007. that the devil would shout

1008. in your ear this morning

  1009. accusing you

1010. that you have no right

1011. to stand before this holy God

  1012. and you don't

1013. were it not for Jesus?

  1014. Those accusations

  1015. that almost stopped you

  1016. coming here this morning

  1017. in the first place.

1018. Do you need to pause

  1019. and just to think

  1020. on the forgiveness

  1021. that God offers you

1022. through his son this morning?

  1023. those words

  1024. from Ezekiel 36

  1025. that we read earlier,

  1026. I will sprinkle

  1027. clean water on you

1028. and you will be clean.

  1029. I will cleanse you

  1030. from all your impurities

1031. and from all your idols.

  1032. I will give you

  1033. a new heart

1034. and put a new spirit

  1035. in you.

1036. I will remove from you

  1037. your heart of stone

  1038. and give you

  1039. a heart of flesh,

1040. all your sin paid for.

  1041. And don't miss verse 15

1042. as we come to a close.

1043. I was trying to think

  1044. how people today

  1045. celebrate their victories.

  1046. If you remember Hibs,

1047. if I can say that word in here.

  1048. Remember Hibs

1049. when they won the Scottish Cup

  1050. a few years ago

  1051. had this massive

  1052. open top bus parade

  1053. down Leith Walk

  1054. if you were here

  1055. when that happened.

  1056. Well on this day

  1057. how an army

  1058. celebrated their victory

  1059. when they returned

  1060. from the battlefield.

1061. What they used to do

1062. is to ride into town

  1063. and display their victory

  1064. to the watching world

1065. by having their prisoners of war

1066. ride in front of them

  1067. and they would parade

  1068. into town

1069. with the prisoners of war

1070. walking in front of them

  1071. and the message

  1072. to the world

  1073. was that we won

  1074. and they didn't.

  1075. We won

  1076. and they didn't.

  1077. And here is Paul

  1078. saying to these Christians

  1079. picture Jesus

  1080. after the cross

  1081. he's riding back

  1082. into town

1083. and who's at the front?

1084. The devil's at the front.

  1085. And he's declaring

  1086. to the watching world

  1087. that I won

  1088. and he didn't.

  1089. I won

  1090. and he didn't.

  1091. Friends

  1092. Jesus

1093. has made you his own.

  1094. In him

1095. do you see what Paul's saying?

1096. You have fullness of life

  1097. and in him

1098. you have forgiveness of sin.

  1099. He has given us

  1100. the greatest power

1101. and he has dealt with

  1102. our greatest problem.

  1103. We have everything

1104. that we need in Christ.

  1105. Let him transform you

  1106. from the inside out

  1107. says Paul.

  1108. Friends

  1109. that bowl

  1110. was worth

  1111. 2.2 million dollars.

  1112. Imagine the joy

  1113. of the seller

  1114. and most likely

  1115. their bank manager

  1116. when they found out

  1117. just what that was

  1118. truly worth.

  1119. But

  1120. consider

  1121. how the person

  1122. that sold it

1123. at the car boot sale

  1124. for three dollars

  1125. must have felt

  1126. when they found out

  1127. that that was worth

  1128. 2.2 million dollars.

  1129. I'd imagine that

  1130. whoever that person was

  1131. and their bank manager

  1132. was pretty devastated.

  1133. I never knew

  1134. what I truly had.

  1135. Well the truth

  1136. of these verses

  1137. for the Christian

  1138. is that in Christ

  1139. in Christ

  1140. the Christ

  1141. that we have received

  1142. we have something

  1143. infinitely more

  1144. and eternally

  1145. valuable

  1146. in him.

  1147. Paul Tripp

  1148. puts it like this

  1149. and with this

  1150. we close.

  1151. It is amazing

  1152. to be tolerated

  1153. by God.

1154. It would be an honor

  1155. simply to be invited

  1156. to the wedding

  1157. but it is beyond

  1158. comprehension

  1159. to be the beloved

  1160. bride

  1161. of the King

  1162. of Kings

  1163. and the Lord

  1164. of Lords.

  1165. Christian

  1166. do you know

  1167. in Christ

  1168. what you've got here?

  1169. Let me pray.

  1170. And so friends

  1171. just as we close

  1172. there was two people

  1173. I was thinking about

  1174. as I was preparing

  1175. for this message

  1176. this morning.

  1177. Firstly

1178. if you are here today

1179. and you need to come

  1180. to Jesus

  1181. and to receive

  1182. the forgiveness

  1183. that he offers

  1184. and to ask him

  1185. to continue

  1186. to transform you

  1187. from the inside

  1188. out.

  1189. And the second

  1190. person is

  1191. if you are here

  1192. today

  1193. and the devil

  1194. is beating you

  1195. up seriously

  1196. because of your

  1197. sin

  1198. in the quietness

  1199. now

  1200. do you need to

  1201. come to the cross

  1202. and to know

  1203. really know

  1204. the forgiveness

  1205. that Jesus

  1206. has won for you

  1207. as he declares

  1208. to you

  1209. that he won

  1210. and the devil

  1211. didn't.

  1212. So maybe just

  1213. in the quietness

  1214. now

  1215. maybe offer

  1216. your own prayer

  1217. to the Lord.

  1218. This is Jesus

  1219. in his glory

  1220. King of Heaven

  1221. dying for me

  1222. it is finished

  1223. he has won it

  1224. death defeated

  1225. heaven beckons

  1226. me.

  1227. So Father

  1228. thank you

  1229. for your word

  1230. this morning

  1231. where would we

  1232. be without

  1233. your word

  1234. thank you

  1235. that you

  1236. love us

  1237. enough

  1238. to tell us

  1239. these truths

  1240. so Father

  1241. help fix

  1242. our minds

  1243. this week

  1244. and our hearts

  1245. on the glory

  1246. of your son

  1247. Jesus Christ

  1248. may he be

  1249. more precious

  1250. to us

  1251. this week

  1252. than anything

  1253. that the world

  1254. can offer us

  1255. and it's in his

  1256. name that we pray

  1257. Amen

  1258. Chao

  1259. Chao

  1260. chimp

  1261. Ch working

  1262. by
