  1. So, I'm just going to pray as we come to think about God's Word.

  2. To begin, let's just bow our heads in prayer.

  3. Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you that you are our great God and King,

  4. that you reveal yourself through your Word,

  5. and we can understand what you expect and want from us.

  6. We apologise, Lord, for all the times when we fail at this

  7. and go so far astray from you and your Word,

  8. Lord, we thank you, Lord, that you bring us back,

  9. that you're forgiving, kind and gentle with us.

  10. We pray tonight that this time of worship would be pleasing to you.

  11. We pray for your Holy Spirit to come and equip us to listen, Lord,

  12. and understand so that we would become more moulded to the image of your Son,

  13. the Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

  14. Amen.

  15. So, tonight we'll be continuing our series on distinct discipleship

  16. and being distinct disciples.

  17. And the question I want to start with, to focus our subject on service,

  18. and the question is, who do you serve?

  19. So, I want us to think about that tonight.

  20. Who are we serving?

  21. Because everyone is serving someone.

  22. And I hope by the end of the sermon that we'll all be saying

  23. that we're serving God more, and we're not serving ourselves,

  24. and we're serving his kingdom and not our own kingdom.

  25. In C.S. Lewis's famous work,

  26. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,

  27. which some of us might have read,

  28. and some of us will watch the film,

  29. I've watched the film and not read the book,

  30. We see an act and an example of self-service right away,

  31. in the very beginning,

  32. from this character, who is Edmund,

  33. the younger of the two brothers,

  34. for those of us who really know our stuff on it.

  35. Edmund goes through the wardrobe by himself,

  36. and he gets lost in the forest that's frozen and snowy,

  37. and begins to walk through it to try and find his way home.

  38. He's alone, and he gets cold,

  39. and he gets hungry and disorientated.

  40. And he must have been miserable,

  41. wondering how am I going to get home,

  42. where am I,

  43. and what's going to happen to me now.

  44. And then he encounters the villain of the peace,

  45. the White Witch,

  46. and she offers him his favourite sweet,

  47. Turkish delight.

  48. And with the circumstances,

  49. it is easy to see why Edmund accepted

  50. this supposedly very kind offer,

  51. and his circumstances.

  52. But this leads Edmund later to be captured by the White Witch,

  53. because he's wrapped up in his own circumstances,

  54. and then from there,

  55. his siblings have to come and rescue him,

  56. and in the process,

  57. risk themselves for him.

  58. And I was thinking about this,

  59. because we can all be like Edmund,

  60. we can be wrapped up in our own selves,

  61. and in our own circumstances,

  62. and we can want to serve ourselves,

  63. and make a priority of our own needs.

  64. But this isn't the way of the Lord Jesus,

  65. and this isn't the way of his kingdom,

  66. and it's not the way of his people,

  67. us, the church.

  68. Or at least it shouldn't be.

  69. But as we heard from our reading tonight,

  70. even the disciples had this sinful tendency,

  71. and this weakness,

  72. and this failing,

  73. that they sought to serve themselves.

  74. These men that we hold up in church,

  75. as paradigms and examples to follow,

  76. of Christian service,

  77. didn't always demonstrate their service

  78. to God,

  79. or to their brothers.

  80. And in this reading,

  81. it's quite the opposite.

  82. In this passage from the Gospel of Mark,

  83. we see James and John,

  84. the two brothers,

  85. seek their own good,

  86. and their own advantage,

  87. over the Lord's,

  88. over the Lord Jesus,

  89. and their brothers.

  90. And it's bookended at the end as well,

  91. by their brother's response to this,

  92. and how the Lord Jesus responds.

  93. And from there we should see,

  94. and how we should respond to our desire

  95. to serve ourselves.

  96. So, self-service.

  97. Or selfless service.

  98. When the passage opens in verse 32,

  99. the Lord Jesus and his disciples

  100. are making their final climactic journey

  101. to Jerusalem.

  102. James and John followed the Lord Jesus

  103. from the very beginning

  104. of his earthly ministry.

  105. And they've seen how the Lord Jesus

  106. is completely different from everyone else,

  107. in every way that they've ever met.

  108. they've seen the Lord Jesus

  109. show real power

  110. in his works,

  111. and in his words,

  112. in comparison with the other leaders

  113. of the day.

  114. And you would hope that this group of men,

  115. above everyone else,

  116. above all others,

  117. would see

  118. and understand

  119. who Jesus is,

  120. why he came,

  121. and what he came to do.

  122. He's the king

  123. come to establish his kingdom

  124. on the earth.

  125. And although he is a king,

  126. he's not a king like any earthly monarch,

  127. and he won't establish his kingdom

  128. like any other earthly king would.

  129. He won't establish it with force

  130. and with might,

  131. but he'll establish it

  132. with weakness

  133. and humility.

  134. In verse 33,

  135. the Lord Jesus tells the disciples

  136. in no uncertain terms

  137. that he's going to be tortured

  138. and killed.

  139. And we, like the disciples,

  140. are so selfish

  141. as people that our brains

  142. have natural inbuilt instincts

  143. when we're in risky situations.

  144. Fight or flight,

  145. the Lord Jesus was in this situation.

  146. One of us would have fought

  147. or fled,

  148. and our brains tell us

  149. to do this

  150. in this sort of instinct.

  151. And these aren't always wrong.

  152. They take us out of risk,

  153. which is sometimes right.

  154. But the Lord Jesus,

  155. instead of fighting

  156. or flying,

  157. running away,

  158. he still,

  159. instinct,

  160. went up to Jerusalem

  161. purposefully,

  162. even though he knew

  163. what was going to happen there.

  164. He lays aside his status

  165. and his power

  166. and his authority

  167. and makes the decision

  168. to go up to Jerusalem

  169. to hand himself over

  170. and to die the death

  171. of a criminal

  172. for sinful people.

  173. For the sinful people

  174. he's met and spoken to

  175. on the way to Jerusalem,

  176. the sinful people

  177. who are following him,

  178. and all of us

  179. sitting here tonight,

  180. this is the great service

  181. he performed

  182. and the greatest service.

  183. There will be no

  184. active service

  185. greater.

  186. And we could not

  187. do this ourselves.

  188. only the Lord Jesus

  189. can do this.

  190. And only he came

  191. to do it

  192. to serve us all

  193. by dying on the cross.

  194. And we have this example

  195. to follow now,

  196. but we won't ever be able

  197. to follow it perfectly

  198. as we are sinful,

  199. limited,

  200. and finite.

  201. So there are things

  202. we just cannot do

  203. that the Lord Jesus did,

  204. including this.

  205. and it also means

  206. that we will inevitably

  207. fail and fall into

  208. either serving

  209. ourselves

  210. or something else

  211. or not serving at all

  212. or serving

  213. for the wrong reasons.

  214. And I think,

  215. in my thinking

  216. for this sermon,

  217. that it's easier

  218. for us

  219. in Britain

  220. where we have

  221. a culture

  222. of hard work

  223. and volunteering

  224. and serving others

  225. to fall into

  226. serving

  227. for the wrong reasons.

  228. And hard work

  229. and volunteering

  230. are both good things.

  231. I'm not saying

  232. go into work tomorrow

  233. and just sit on your computer

  234. and watch YouTube videos.

  235. And I'm not saying

  236. stay in bed.

  237. And I'm not saying

  238. if you volunteer somewhere

  239. to just quit

  240. because I've made you feel guilty.

  241. Don't do either of those.

  242. Keep going to work.

  243. Keep volunteering.

  244. But for the right reasons.

  245. Because these are both

  246. good things

  247. that God gives us

  248. where we're supposed

  249. to be distinct disciples

  250. and where we worship God

  251. in our thought,

  252. our word,

  253. and our conduct.

  254. But if we listen

  255. to the world

  256. about our work

  257. or our service

  258. and work

  259. or volunteering

  260. organizations

  261. or in church as well,

  262. we'll fall into thinking

  263. that these things

  264. are for us,

  265. to benefit us,

  266. that we are part

  267. of these bigger organizations

  268. and do our part,

  269. but we're actually there

  270. to benefit ourselves

  271. and for our own gain.

  272. That we're there

  273. to purely go to our desk,

  274. to get our head down,

  275. do our work,

  276. and get paid

  277. at the end of the month.

  278. While avoiding

  279. as much trouble

  280. and inconvenience

  281. from our colleagues

  282. as possible.

  283. Whereas what the Lord

  284. Jesus is saying,

  285. we should be doing

  286. the opposite of this.

  287. We should be

  288. the best employees

  289. and the best servants

  290. of the people

  291. we work with

  292. and our colleagues with

  293. and let them know

  294. that through

  295. our service,

  296. our attitudes,

  297. and our demeanors,

  298. and that we will

  299. serve them

  300. even at cost

  301. to ourselves

  302. because of who

  303. we serve.

  304. In a volunteering role,

  305. we can begin

  306. as well to think

  307. rather than God

  308. putting us into

  309. that place

  310. and in that role

  311. to spread

  312. his fame and renown,

  313. that we are there

  314. to just pass time

  315. or pursue

  316. our interests

  317. or our hobbies.

  318. But that's not the case.

  319. God puts us

  320. into that situation

  321. to serve him,

  322. to serve the people

  323. we're there with,

  324. and serve the organization

  325. we're members of.

  326. And this isn't a small task,

  327. any of this.

  328. However,

  329. this is the way

  330. the Lord has created

  331. the world to be.

  332. So by accepting Jesus

  333. and his service,

  334. we are fulfilling

  335. what God has intended

  336. and how the world

  337. has been created

  338. to be.

  339. And the Lord Jesus says

  340. his yoke is easy

  341. and his burden is light.

  342. So if you're sitting here

  343. tonight

  344. and you don't know

  345. the Lord Jesus,

  346. don't be discouraged

  347. or put off

  348. by anything I'm saying

  349. because Jesus himself

  350. is not a hard taskmaster

  351. who press gangs people

  352. into service,

  353. but rather his yoke

  354. is easy

  355. and his burden

  356. is light.

  357. And then we see

  358. selfish service

  359. in the next part

  360. of the passage.

  361. Selfish service.

  362. And James and John,

  363. they haven't paid attention

  364. clearly to anything

  365. that the Lord Jesus

  366. has just said to them

  367. in the previous verses

  368. when in verse 35,

  369. they approach

  370. the Lord Jesus

  371. and they ask him

  372. to do for us

  373. whatever we ask of you.

  374. They're speaking

  375. to Jesus like

  376. up on the slide

  377. like he's a genie

  378. or a wizard

  379. and it reminded me

  380. of how

  381. in Aladdin,

  382. Aladdin finds a lamp

  383. and rubs it

  384. and then the genie

  385. pops out

  386. and grants him

  387. three wishes

  388. to fulfill

  389. his earthly desires.

  390. But the Lord Jesus

  391. isn't a genie

  392. or a wizard

  393. in any sense.

  394. So as we think

  395. about our service,

  396. we shouldn't be thinking

  397. about any gain

  398. or any reward

  399. from it.

  400. And James and John

  401. want the Lord Jesus

  402. to use his power

  403. to just conjure up

  404. whatever they want

  405. upon their request.

  406. From a sinful,

  407. limited,

  408. human perspective,

  409. all of our perspectives,

  410. we can maybe

  411. get on board

  412. with that thinking

  413. because they've been

  414. following the Lord Jesus

  415. and they've seen him

  416. perform these great miracles

  417. and they think of him

  418. as a great man of God

  419. rather than the son of God

  420. at this point

  421. and in theory

  422. in their thinking

  423. in their minds

  424. that he could use

  425. that power

  426. to do whatever

  427. they would like of him.

  428. Two sinful creatures

  429. approach their creator

  430. and make a demand

  431. of him

  432. for their own gain.

  433. They're wrapped up

  434. in their own desires

  435. and they can't see

  436. anything outside

  437. of themselves.

  438. James and John

  439. try to advance themselves

  440. at the expense

  441. of the Lord himself

  442. and they don't consider

  443. what the Lord's purpose

  444. is in Jerusalem

  445. for the Lord Jesus

  446. and for them

  447. going forward.

  448. They try to advance

  449. themselves

  450. at the Lord Jesus' expense

  451. forgetting that

  452. he's the one

  453. that they've been following

  454. and he's been supplying

  455. all their needs

  456. along the way

  457. as they make their way

  458. to Jerusalem

  459. and they also make

  460. a request

  461. and try and

  462. advance themselves

  463. at the expense

  464. of their brothers

  465. trying to clamber

  466. over the other disciples

  467. to try and become

  468. their rulers

  469. and this will look

  470. different in all our lives

  471. we weren't there

  472. doing this

  473. but we still do this.

  474. We are called

  475. to be humble servants

  476. but all too often

  477. we become arrogant rulers.

  478. We can fall into

  479. the thinking

  480. that we are better

  481. than other people

  482. because we are Christians

  483. then seek to get

  484. into positions of power

  485. of authority

  486. positions of power

  487. and authority

  488. over others.

  489. Once a person

  490. becomes a Christian

  491. he's called to the opposite

  492. of that mindset.

  493. He was once

  494. that way

  495. and God

  496. has saved him from it

  497. and called him

  498. into this new

  499. service.

  500. He is called

  501. to go into all the world

  502. to spread the gospel

  503. and a key element

  504. of that

  505. and that witness

  506. is humble service.

  507. However

  508. just like James and John

  509. we all try

  510. and advance ourselves

  511. at the expense

  512. of people around us.

  513. Even in church

  514. we can lose sight

  515. of where we are

  516. who we're supposed to be

  517. and who we're supposed

  518. to be serving

  519. and why.

  520. And although I've said that

  521. I'm not grandstanding.

  522. I'm really talking to myself

  523. there primarily.

  524. It's all too easy

  525. for someone in my position

  526. in ministry training

  527. and theological education

  528. to think of service

  529. and turn it into

  530. a sort of spiritual CV

  531. where I attend church

  532. I get involved

  533. in church life

  534. and in service

  535. and going along

  536. to class

  537. and all these other things

  538. conferences

  539. and talks

  540. to catch the attention

  541. of someone

  542. to boost

  543. my own reputation

  544. and to try

  545. and get ahead

  546. of other people.

  547. and to

  548. think of the future

  549. jobs I could get

  550. if these people

  551. see me

  552. in these places.

  553. So it can be

  554. all too easy

  555. to apply the principles

  556. of secular

  557. corporate networking

  558. to church life

  559. for some of us

  560. and me

  561. most included

  562. which is sinful

  563. and falling right along

  564. in the footsteps

  565. of James and John

  566. rather than

  567. our King Jesus.

  568. So we need to see

  569. this in ourselves

  570. repent

  571. and ask the Lord

  572. to renew our hearts

  573. so we can serve

  574. faithfully

  575. as we are supposed to

  576. without any idea

  577. or thought

  578. of reward

  579. or gain

  580. for ourselves.

  581. Then moving down

  582. in verse 36

  583. the Lord Jesus

  584. replies

  585. to James and John

  586. and asks them

  587. what they would like

  588. him to do for them

  589. and this reveals

  590. James and John's

  591. heart

  592. and reason

  593. for serving.

  594. In verse 37

  595. James and John

  596. make their request

  597. they want to

  598. flank the Lord Jesus

  599. at the earthly banquet

  600. they're expecting

  601. will be held

  602. in his honour

  603. when he arrives

  604. in Jerusalem.

  605. However there wasn't

  606. going to be

  607. any earthly banquet

  608. party

  609. or festival

  610. or big event

  611. thrown

  612. to celebrate

  613. the Lord Jesus

  614. entering Jerusalem.

  615. He's just told them

  616. that the exact opposite

  617. is going to happen.

  618. That's just

  619. the first problem

  620. with the request though

  621. there's more to it.

  622. the next problem

  623. comes at the end

  624. of the verse

  625. when they say

  626. to sit

  627. in your glory.

  628. So they're expecting

  629. that this

  630. big party

  631. will be thrown

  632. they'll sit

  633. at either side

  634. of Jesus

  635. and they'll share

  636. in his glory.

  637. That that can't happen.

  638. You can't take

  639. no one

  640. not even James and John

  641. these disciples

  642. or the others

  643. can take a share

  644. in God's glory

  645. and none of us

  646. can either.

  647. He's the son of God

  648. come to rescue men

  649. from their sins

  650. by being physically

  651. put to death

  652. and then

  653. rising again.

  654. This is where

  655. the whole of history

  656. has been leading

  657. to this moment

  658. where Lord Jesus

  659. will be crucified

  660. and rise.

  661. So James and John

  662. just like us

  663. don't deserve

  664. any share

  665. in this glory.

  666. This is not

  667. a team effort

  668. it is a work

  669. of God alone.

  670. And then Jesus replies

  671. as you can see

  672. on the screen

  673. in the next verse

  674. as he often

  675. answer people

  676. who are questioning

  677. him with a question

  678. he asked them

  679. you do not know

  680. what you are asking

  681. are you able

  682. to drink

  683. the cup

  684. that I drink

  685. or to be baptized

  686. with the baptism

  687. with which I am baptized?

  688. The background

  689. of the phrase

  690. in Jesus' question

  691. is important

  692. as it shows us

  693. his meaning

  694. and the full extent

  695. of how unqualified

  696. James and John were.

  697. The cup

  698. he refers to

  699. is the cup

  700. of God's wrath.

  701. In the Old Testament

  702. the prophets

  703. pictured God's wrath

  704. as a cup

  705. a cup

  706. full of all

  707. of God's hatred

  708. for sin

  709. and his righteous

  710. anger

  711. with sinners.

  712. The Lord Jesus

  713. is going up

  714. to Jerusalem

  715. to drink that cup

  716. and to have it

  717. poured out on him

  718. for all of our sin.

  719. And the baptism

  720. he speaks of here

  721. as well

  722. is another reference

  723. to the Old Testament.

  724. This baptism

  725. refers to

  726. the Lord Jesus

  727. death and resurrection.

  728. Just like in baptism

  729. here

  730. where a person

  731. is lowered

  732. under the water

  733. and rises up

  734. the Lord Jesus

  735. will be killed

  736. be put in the earth

  737. and then

  738. he will rise again

  739. out of the earth

  740. to be his people's

  741. living saviour

  742. to continue

  743. to serve his people

  744. to serve us

  745. by standing

  746. in heaven for us.

  747. And then

  748. James and John

  749. have the nerve

  750. to answer Jesus

  751. that they can

  752. drink this cup

  753. and be baptised

  754. with this baptism

  755. almost in an attempt

  756. to claw back

  757. please let us

  758. have those places.

  759. Jesus almost

  760. corrects them

  761. and says

  762. without them fully

  763. knowing what

  764. he means

  765. that they will

  766. go through

  767. similar hardship

  768. as well

  769. for their service

  770. to the king

  771. and that actually

  772. the honour

  773. James and John

  774. asked for

  775. cannot be given

  776. by Jesus

  777. even Jesus

  778. God the son

  779. God in the flesh

  780. cannot give

  781. these places

  782. further saying

  783. that Jesus

  784. is that perfect servant

  785. although he's

  786. God in the flesh

  787. he's still

  788. putting himself

  789. under the authority

  790. of God the father

  791. and serving

  792. and then

  793. as I clicked

  794. on to

  795. earlier

  796. a minute ago

  797. we see

  798. the other

  799. disciples

  800. weigh in

  801. in the conversation

  802. and they're

  803. not happy

  804. and an argument

  805. breaks out

  806. between the

  807. brothers

  808. but not for

  809. the same reasons

  810. as you might

  811. hope

  812. I sort of

  813. picture it

  814. as friends

  815. coming in

  816. and telling

  817. their other

  818. friends

  819. no you've

  820. said the wrong

  821. thing

  822. draw back

  823. stop talking

  824. shut up

  825. come away

  826. but it's not

  827. for that

  828. reason

  829. unfortunately

  830. it's

  831. because

  832. James and John

  833. have got in there

  834. before them

  835. because they

  836. asked for those

  837. places

  838. before the other

  839. disciples got the

  840. chance

  841. the other

  842. disciples are in

  843. the thinking

  844. we wanted

  845. those places

  846. we wanted

  847. that honour

  848. we wanted

  849. that glory

  850. we wanted

  851. that power

  852. that would

  853. come

  854. with those

  855. places

  856. instead of

  857. seeing them

  858. all seeing

  859. themselves

  860. as unworthy

  861. of those

  862. places of

  863. honour

  864. and as

  865. servants of

  866. God

  867. they want

  868. to propel

  869. themselves

  870. into those

  871. places of

  872. honour

  873. at Jesus

  874. right and

  875. left

  876. it shows

  877. as well

  878. that they

  879. don't understand

  880. who Jesus

  881. is and

  882. what he's

  883. come to

  884. do

  885. rather than

  886. use his

  887. power and

  888. pose his

  889. rightful rule

  890. on the

  891. earth

  892. he came

  893. he's going

  894. to be

  895. crushed

  896. sorry

  897. this incident

  898. in the

  899. gospel

  900. and the

  901. rest of

  902. the gospel

  903. shows

  904. who Jesus

  905. is and

  906. what he

  907. has done

  908. so we

  909. have no

  910. excuse to

  911. act like

  912. James and

  913. John and

  914. the other

  915. disciples

  916. Jesus never

  917. tried to

  918. undermine

  919. anyone for

  920. his own

  921. gain

  922. and as I

  923. was looking

  924. through

  925. things to

  926. speak with

  927. this sermon

  928. I came across

  929. a lot of

  930. self-help

  931. books and

  932. self-help

  933. and self-improvement

  934. websites

  935. they're everywhere

  936. now it seems

  937. like every

  938. bookshop

  939. in the

  940. city and

  941. through the

  942. country is

  943. packed with

  944. lots of

  945. these things

  946. and it's

  947. permeated our

  948. culture and

  949. our society

  950. and our

  951. thinking and

  952. the way we

  953. operate as

  954. a culture

  955. and one

  956. website I

  957. looked up in

  958. particular had

  959. across the top

  960. of it

  961. serve yourself

  962. first

  963. these things

  964. are in all

  965. these books

  966. and websites

  967. it's not

  968. usually as

  969. explicit as

  970. that but it

  971. is marketed

  972. in a gentle

  973. way so it's

  974. not marketed

  975. as the

  976. selfishness

  977. it is

  978. but these

  979. things all

  980. logically lead

  981. in the same

  982. direction

  983. into one

  984. place

  985. looking out

  986. for yourself

  987. at the

  988. expense of

  989. others

  990. to undermining

  991. and trying to

  992. get ahead of

  993. other people

  994. for your own

  995. gain and for

  996. your own

  997. benefit

  998. and James

  999. and John

  1000. were buying

  1001. in to this

  1002. here

  1003. and the other

  1004. disciples then

  1005. came at their

  1006. back and did

  1007. the same

  1008. thing and

  1009. bought into

  1010. this thinking

  1011. and into

  1012. this mindset

  1013. trying to

  1014. outmaneuver

  1015. anyone for

  1016. their own

  1017. gain

  1018. especially here

  1019. in church

  1020. especially among

  1021. our brothers

  1022. and sisters

  1023. in Christ

  1024. is not

  1025. Jesus way

  1026. it's not

  1027. the way of

  1028. his kingdom

  1029. and then

  1030. in the next

  1031. few verses

  1032. towards the

  1033. end of our

  1034. passage

  1035. Jesus

  1036. reiterates

  1037. his teaching

  1038. and further

  1039. explains it

  1040. from the

  1041. beginning

  1042. of the

  1043. passage

  1044. in verse

  1045. 42

  1046. he calls

  1047. them all

  1048. to him

  1049. to settle

  1050. the debate

  1051. that is

  1052. going on

  1053. between them

  1054. you know

  1055. that those

  1056. who are

  1057. considered

  1058. rulers of

  1059. the Gentiles

  1060. lord are

  1061. over them

  1062. and their

  1063. great ones

  1064. exercise

  1065. authority

  1066. over them

  1067. the Lord

  1068. Jesus is

  1069. essentially

  1070. saying here

  1071. that his

  1072. disciples are

  1073. behaving

  1074. according to

  1075. the pattern

  1076. of the

  1077. world

  1078. the rulers

  1079. of the day

  1080. made sure

  1081. that the

  1082. people that

  1083. they were

  1084. ruling

  1085. knew who

  1086. was in

  1087. charge

  1088. and who

  1089. they were

  1090. to be

  1091. serving

  1092. and then

  1093. the Lord

  1094. Jesus

  1095. continues

  1096. and says

  1097. but it

  1098. shall not

  1099. be so

  1100. among you

  1101. the Lord

  1102. Jesus is

  1103. saying here

  1104. that they

  1105. are to be

  1106. different

  1107. that we

  1108. are to be

  1109. different

  1110. that the

  1111. people of

  1112. God

  1113. the church

  1114. are to be

  1115. different

  1116. out in the

  1117. world

  1118. we're constantly

  1119. being told

  1120. to strive

  1121. for promotions

  1122. and for pay

  1123. rises

  1124. as we

  1125. look

  1126. when we

  1127. leave

  1128. school

  1129. for

  1130. university

  1131. and

  1132. college

  1133. courses

  1134. we're

  1135. encouraged

  1136. to go

  1137. to the

  1138. best

  1139. college

  1140. we can

  1141. the best

  1142. university

  1143. we can

  1144. for what

  1145. we can

  1146. get out

  1147. of it

  1148. it will

  1149. serve

  1150. us

  1151. better

  1152. as we

  1153. train

  1154. and it

  1155. will

  1156. stand

  1157. us

  1158. in

  1159. better

  1160. stead

  1161. when we

  1162. leave

  1163. to find

  1164. jobs

  1165. and

  1166. careers

  1167. so often

  1168. all these

  1169. things

  1170. of life

  1171. are sold

  1172. to us

  1173. in a

  1174. packaging

  1175. that's

  1176. for us

  1177. for

  1178. ourselves

  1179. for our

  1180. improvement

  1181. for our

  1182. gain

  1183. what we

  1184. can get

  1185. from

  1186. something

  1187. how it

  1188. will help

  1189. us

  1190. in our

  1191. next

  1192. endeavour

  1193. or project

  1194. and there's

  1195. nothing wrong

  1196. with going to

  1197. good universities

  1198. or good

  1199. colleges

  1200. and doing

  1201. these good

  1202. courses

  1203. but we

  1204. shouldn't

  1205. just see

  1206. these places

  1207. as stepping

  1208. stones

  1209. because that

  1210. leads us

  1211. logically

  1212. to see

  1213. the people

  1214. that we

  1215. are there

  1216. with

  1217. the people

  1218. we study

  1219. under

  1220. the people

  1221. we work

  1222. with

  1223. as stepping

  1224. stones

  1225. and as

  1226. we know

  1227. the thing

  1228. with stepping

  1229. stones

  1230. is

  1231. we step

  1232. on the

  1233. top

  1234. of them

  1235. and we

  1236. aren't

  1237. called

  1238. to step

  1239. on the

  1240. top

  1241. of anyone

  1242. and then

  1243. the next

  1244. part

  1245. of verse

  1246. 43

  1247. the Lord

  1248. Jesus

  1249. actually

  1250. states

  1251. the opposite

  1252. which is

  1253. totally

  1254. against

  1255. our

  1256. culture's

  1257. thinking

  1258. and our

  1259. way of

  1260. doing

  1261. things

  1262. but whoever

  1263. would be

  1264. great

  1265. among you

  1266. must be

  1267. your servant

  1268. if you

  1269. want to be

  1270. great in the

  1271. kingdom of

  1272. God

  1273. as we

  1274. should

  1275. rightly

  1276. you

  1277. must

  1278. put

  1279. yourself

  1280. to the

  1281. bottom

  1282. of the

  1283. pile

  1284. instead

  1285. of trying

  1286. to get

  1287. to the

  1288. top

  1289. and stop

  1290. striving

  1291. for the

  1292. top

  1293. spot

  1294. or to be

  1295. top dog

  1296. or trying

  1297. to get

  1298. into the

  1299. spotlight

  1300. God's

  1301. kingdom

  1302. doesn't

  1303. work that

  1304. way

  1305. and we

  1306. should

  1307. praise

  1308. God

  1309. that it

  1310. doesn't

  1311. and then

  1312. he goes

  1313. even further

  1314. in the last

  1315. part of the

  1316. verse

  1317. and calls

  1318. them to be

  1319. slaves of

  1320. each other

  1321. not in the

  1322. 21st century

  1323. sense

  1324. we hear this

  1325. word slave

  1326. and our

  1327. minds go

  1328. to the

  1329. American

  1330. south

  1331. and the

  1332. terrible

  1333. things that

  1334. happened there

  1335. to people

  1336. but it's

  1337. being said

  1338. in the

  1339. first century

  1340. context

  1341. and the

  1342. Lord Jesus

  1343. is emphasizing

  1344. that they

  1345. must be

  1346. at each

  1347. other

  1348. service

  1349. as a

  1350. slave

  1351. was always

  1352. at the

  1353. service

  1354. of his

  1355. master

  1356. in that

  1357. day

  1358. then he

  1359. reiterates

  1360. his previous

  1361. teaching

  1362. from verses

  1363. 33

  1364. and 34

  1365. that he's

  1366. freely giving

  1367. himself

  1368. over to be

  1369. killed for

  1370. them and

  1371. for us

  1372. with the

  1373. result that

  1374. we are

  1375. brought into

  1376. God's

  1377. family

  1378. we're

  1379. ransomed

  1380. from death

  1381. and destruction

  1382. and we're

  1383. brought into

  1384. life

  1385. we're made

  1386. friends of

  1387. God

  1388. where we

  1389. were once

  1390. enemies

  1391. that we'll

  1392. not have to

  1393. pay the

  1394. price for

  1395. our sin

  1396. as Jesus

  1397. has already

  1398. taken the

  1399. punishment

  1400. and was

  1401. with God

  1402. the Father

  1403. speaking on

  1404. our behalf

  1405. meaning we

  1406. can stand

  1407. before God

  1408. and be

  1409. counted as

  1410. righteous

  1411. if the

  1412. life of a

  1413. humble servant

  1414. is good

  1415. enough for

  1416. the Lord

  1417. Jesus

  1418. the King

  1419. of the

  1420. universe

  1421. God

  1422. in the

  1423. flesh

  1424. is good

  1425. enough for

  1426. the disciples

  1427. as we

  1428. see in

  1429. this

  1430. passage

  1431. if it's

  1432. good enough

  1433. for Jesus

  1434. and the

  1435. disciples

  1436. it's also

  1437. good enough

  1438. for us

  1439. both in

  1440. our service

  1441. of God

  1442. the church

  1443. and others

  1444. outside the

  1445. church

  1446. so just

  1447. to go back

  1448. to our

  1449. previous

  1450. idea

  1451. who are

  1452. you serving

  1453. are you

  1454. going to

  1455. be like

  1456. Edmund

  1457. are you

  1458. going to

  1459. be like

  1460. James and

  1461. John

  1462. in this

  1463. passage

  1464. or are

  1465. you going

  1466. to follow

  1467. the example

  1468. of our

  1469. master

  1470. are we

  1471. going to

  1472. serve

  1473. ourselves

  1474. and our

  1475. own

  1476. kingdoms

  1477. or are

  1478. we going

  1479. to serve

  1480. Jesus

  1481. and his

  1482. kingdom

  1483. I would

  1484. encourage

  1485. and implore

  1486. the Christian

  1487. sitting here

  1488. tonight

  1489. to more

  1490. and more

  1491. serve

  1492. the Lord

  1493. Jesus

  1494. wholeheartedly

  1495. to build

  1496. up his

  1497. kingdom

  1498. and his

  1499. fame

  1500. and renown

  1501. and if

  1502. you're not

  1503. a Christian

  1504. sitting here

  1505. tonight

  1506. I would

  1507. encourage

  1508. you

  1509. not to

  1510. be put

  1511. off

  1512. this is

  1513. the way

  1514. the world

  1515. has been

  1516. made

  1517. we are

  1518. to be

  1519. servants

  1520. of God

  1521. servants

  1522. of his

  1523. kingdom

  1524. servants

  1525. of his

  1526. glory

  1527. and not

  1528. our own

  1529. and to

  1530. serve

  1531. his

  1532. kingdom

  1533. so

  1534. as we

  1535. think

  1536. about that

  1537. I'm just

  1538. going to

  1539. pray

  1540. to close

  1541. heavenly

  1542. father

  1543. we give

  1544. you praise

  1545. and honour

  1546. you're so

  1547. high and

  1548. far above

  1549. our ways

  1550. but you

  1551. come down

  1552. to us

  1553. by sending

  1554. the Lord

  1555. Jesus

  1556. to clearly

  1557. tell us

  1558. what we

  1559. must do

  1560. to be

  1561. saved

  1562. and we

  1563. thank you

  1564. as well

  1565. that is a

  1566. free offer

  1567. you make

  1568. to us

  1569. we ask

  1570. forgiveness

  1571. Lord

  1572. when we

  1573. sin against

  1574. you

  1575. in your

  1576. name

  1577. we

  1578. we ask

  1579. Lord

  1580. that you

  1581. continue

  1582. to draw

  1583. us back

  1584. to yourself

  1585. and show

  1586. us our

  1587. error

  1588. through your

  1589. word

  1590. and through

  1591. your people

  1592. we thank

  1593. you for

  1594. your word

  1595. Lord

  1596. and how

  1597. it teaches

  1598. and instructs

  1599. us

  1600. we also

  1601. pray that you

  1602. continue to

  1603. mould us

  1604. into the

  1605. image of

  1606. the Lord

  1607. Jesus

  1608. Christ

  1609. we would

  1610. just ask

  1611. you to

  1612. bless us

  1613. now

  1614. Lord

  1615. as we

  1616. part

  1617. company

  1618. and go

  1619. into the

  1620. rest of

  1621. the week

  1622. and we

  1623. just ask

  1624. and thank

  1625. you for

  1626. all these

  1627. things

  1628. in the

  1629. worthy

  1630. and precious

  1631. name of

  1632. the Lord

  1633. Jesus

  1634. Christ

  1635. Amen
