  1. Well, good morning, everyone. It's wonderful to see you. If you have your Bibles in, please grab them and turn back to Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  2. And this is where we're going to be this morning, looking at Mary's song. So as you turn there, let's pray.

  3. I'll stay very still.

  4. So, Father, we ask that you would help us by your Spirit this morning, as we turn to your Word.

  5. And as we take in these quite familiar words that we think about this time of year, about what you've done in our lives,

  6. and we pray, Father, that your Spirit would take those familiar words and that he would bring them to our hearts with a real freshness this morning.

  7. Father, thank you that you hear us because we pray in Jesus' precious name. Amen.

  8. Well, as we build up to Christmas as a church over the next few weeks,

  9. we're going to be thinking about some songs that we find in the Bible from the very first Christmas.

  10. Because, and let's be honest, we're all friends here, okay?

  11. Everybody loves a Christmas song, don't we?

  12. We love a Christmas song.

  13. So, to kick us off this morning to get us thinking,

  14. I want you to turn to your neighbour for 30 seconds,

  15. and I want you to ask them what is their favourite Christmas song, okay?

  16. What is their favourite Christmas song?

  17. And you've got the time, you can ask them why as well.

  18. Go for it.

  19. Okay, let's bring it to a close there.

  20. Oh, you're good fun with that.

  21. I wonder if anybody said the following.

  22. Who said Bing Crosby?

  23. Anybody?

  24. Classic.

  25. We love Bing, do we not?

  26. Dreaming of a white Christmas, somebody?

  27. There we go.

  28. How about, and maybe this is a bit more modern,

  29. what about Michael Bublé?

  30. Let's not act like we've not had that album on on Spotify,

  31. his Christmas album.

  32. There's Michael Bublé.

  33. What about the Jackson 5?

  34. Yeah, Santa Claus is coming to town.

  35. Classic there.

  36. Well, I'm getting lots of shakes.

  37. Nobody actually listened to these things, no?

  38. You can go home and check them out.

  39. Here is my favourite,

  40. and I'll admit to having a blast of it in the office this week

  41. when no one was around.

  42. My favourite is Last Christmas by Wham.

  43. Anyone else say that one?

  44. Yeah?

  45. A few of us said Last Christmas by Wham.

  46. Last Christmas, here's the lyrics.

  47. Last Christmas, I gave you my heart.

  48. But the very next day, you gave it away.

  49. This year, to save me from tears,

  50. I'll give it to somebody special.

  51. Now, it's very funny when you think about it,

  52. because apart from that one line in the song,

  53. that one word,

  54. that song has got nothing to do with Christmas.

  55. If you think about it,

  56. because, and it's consistently voted

  57. in the top ten Christmas songs of all time,

  58. but if you think about it,

  59. nothing to do with Christmas.

  60. And the reason George Michael wrote the song

  61. was nothing to do with Christmas.

  62. It was to do with the fact that somebody came into his life

  63. who broke their promises to him.

  64. That's why he wrote the song.

  65. Somebody came into his life who broke their promises to him.

  66. And to some extent,

  67. we can identify, can't we,

  68. with George Michael at that point,

  69. because we hate it in life

  70. when people break their promises to us.

  71. Think about it.

  72. The politician who promised you the world,

  73. who got your vote,

  74. and didn't deliver on what he or she said.

  75. The car mechanic who promised you a price,

  76. only for it to rise, and to rise, and to rise.

  77. The friend who you arranged to meet at that time on that day,

  78. who pulled out with one minute to go.

  79. We hate it, don't we, in life,

  80. when people break their promises to us.

  81. It's the little promises of life,

  82. but it's also true, isn't it,

  83. of the big promises of life.

  84. And I think that's why this message this morning

  85. from Mary's song is such good news

  86. for all of us this morning.

  87. For let me take you from a man singing a Christmas song

  88. about a person who broke their promises

  89. to a young woman singing a Christmas song

  90. about the God who's kept his promises.

  91. Here is Mary in chapter one of Luke's gospel

  92. singing about and celebrating the God

  93. who keeps his promises.

  94. If you get one thing from this morning,

  95. and encourage me by taking more than one thing

  96. from this morning, but take that from this morning.

  97. This God keeps his promises.

  98. If you've got your Bibles there,

  99. look at verse 55 of chapter one.

  100. Mary declares, the end of her song,

  101. He has helped his servant Israel,

  102. remembering to be merciful to Abraham

  103. and his descendants forever,

  104. just as he promised our ancestors.

  105. You see, right at the heart of Mary's song,

  106. right at the heart of what Luke wants us to know,

  107. is that this God keeps his promises.

  108. Now, with any good song,

  109. before we go inside the song,

  110. let's go outside the song.

  111. Let's get under the skin of what's going on here

  112. behind Mary's song.

  113. So we pick up the story at verse 26 of chapter one,

  114. with the angel Gabriel sent by God

  115. to go and deliver a message to Mary.

  116. Now, notice where she is.

  117. Where is she?

  118. She's in this little backwater town of Nazareth.

  119. Nazareth.

  120. Now, what do you need to know about Nazareth?

  121. What you need to know about Nazareth

  122. is not a lot goes on in Nazareth.

  123. Okay?

  124. Nobody's booking their summer holiday to Nazareth.

  125. Hashtag Nazareth is not trending on Twitter.

  126. In fact, the opposite is true.

  127. Sometimes as you read people in the Gospels,

  128. they're making jokes about Nazareth.

  129. Who would come from Nazareth?

  130. What good could come out of that place?

  131. This is Nazareth.

  132. But it's to this place that God sends Gabriel

  133. to announce the dawning of the greatest promise

  134. that the world will ever know.

  135. Not to a palace and a princess,

  136. but to a young teenage girl

  137. who's living in a backwater town.

  138. That's where she is.

  139. And notice who she is.

  140. Mary's a young woman.

  141. Do you see it in the text?

  142. She's pledged to be married.

  143. Not to the village celebrity,

  144. but to the village carpenter.

  145. To Nazareth, to Mary, and to Joseph.

  146. Now let's be honest.

  147. If we were God,

  148. and we had a message as big as this to deliver to the world,

  149. we would have aimed a little bit higher

  150. than Nazareth and Mary, would we not?

  151. I mean, no PR expert is signing off on this plan.

  152. This is not how you deliver a message of cosmic proportions to the world.

  153. Surely, you can see that God.

  154. But, God chose Nazareth,

  155. and God chose Mary.

  156. And friends, even with that,

  157. I hope you're seeing today,

  158. whoever you are here this morning,

  159. what kind of God that we're dealing with here.

  160. This is the God of the Bible.

  161. The God not of pomp and pride,

  162. but the God who looks upon and remembers the unimportant

  163. and the seemingly insignificant.

  164. Do you not praise him this morning,

  165. that he does not operate on our wavelength?

  166. He does not think like we think.

  167. This is our God this morning,

  168. as we meet him in Luke 1.

  169. That's the kind of God that we're dealing with here,

  170. the God of the Bible.

  171. And so, verse 28,

  172. Gabriel delivers God's message to Mary,

  173. to see it, that she is greatly favoured.

  174. And notice how she is.

  175. How is she?

  176. She's greatly troubled.

  177. Interesting, isn't it,

  178. that our society thinks of angels as being all cute and cuddly?

  179. Personally, I blame Casper the ghost for that.

  180. But that is never the reaction of people in the Bible

  181. when they encounter angels.

  182. Mary's petrified.

  183. But, interestingly,

  184. if you look closely at the text,

  185. not so much at the messenger,

  186. she's petrified at the message.

  187. And so Gabriel says to her,

  188. to quote Band-Aid,

  189. it's Christmas time and there's no need to be afraid.

  190. Why?

  191. Because God has looked upon Mary in his grace.

  192. In his grace,

  193. which means it's not because of who she is

  194. or what she's done that God is being kind to her.

  195. She's not come top in the Galilean X factor here.

  196. This is not what we're dealing with.

  197. God has looked on her,

  198. the text suggests,

  199. for no other reason than he is gracious

  200. and he is kind.

  201. This is the God of the Bible.

  202. Right off the bat,

  203. you see it,

  204. Luke wants us to know this,

  205. this doctor turned historian,

  206. research this carefully.

  207. He wants us to know straight off the bat

  208. that this is the kind of God

  209. that we're dealing with here.

  210. Looking on the lowly,

  211. the God who reaches down to the humble.

  212. Mary is favoured.

  213. And Gabriel says,

  214. Mary, you will be with child.

  215. And she's not going to have to wait

  216. for the 20 week scan to learn the gender.

  217. Do you see?

  218. It's a boy.

  219. And she's not going to have to go through

  220. that painstaking process

  221. of trying to pick a name

  222. and hedge your bets.

  223. He will be called,

  224. verse 31,

  225. Jesus.

  226. And instantly do you see

  227. that there's a purpose

  228. and there's a plan for this boy

  229. and the clues in his name,

  230. Jesus.

  231. Meaning the Lord is salvation.

  232. That's what his name means.

  233. God saves.

  234. Named not in hopeful expectation

  235. about what he might become.

  236. Named precisely in keeping

  237. in all,

  238. after all that he has come to do

  239. and accomplish.

  240. This is Jesus.

  241. And Gabriel declares,

  242. he will be great.

  243. Do you see it there?

  244. He will be the son of the Most High

  245. who will have the throne

  246. of his father,

  247. David.

  248. In other words,

  249. God is saying,

  250. this is my king,

  251. my king who I promised

  252. that I would send,

  253. my king who you've been waiting for

  254. and the king who you desperately,

  255. desperately need.

  256. And look at the length

  257. of his tenure,

  258. verse 33.

  259. It will have no end.

  260. No end.

  261. Get your head around that.

  262. No end.

  263. Remember I used to love playing

  264. when I was young.

  265. I still do.

  266. I don't really play it that often.

  267. The board game Risk.

  268. One of you have ever played Risk before?

  269. That the,

  270. it's a game that's great for your ego,

  271. okay,

  272. because the strapline of that game

  273. is all about

  274. build your empire,

  275. conquer the world.

  276. The strapline is

  277. world domination.

  278. That's what Risk is all about.

  279. Played with my friends

  280. when I was young.

  281. I even managed to win

  282. on a few occasions,

  283. conquer the world.

  284. And every time I conquered the world,

  285. I had about one minute

  286. to look at the boards

  287. and to bask

  288. in the fact that my pieces

  289. were all over that board.

  290. And this was before camera phones,

  291. so I had to mentally store it.

  292. Couldn't store it anywhere else.

  293. Mentally store it.

  294. And I had one minute

  295. to bask in that victory

  296. until somebody flipped the pieces over

  297. and they went back in the box.

  298. And it's time for bed

  299. because it's five in the morning.

  300. Friends,

  301. down the ages,

  302. many people have had their goal

  303. at building their own little empires,

  304. haven't they?

  305. Think about it.

  306. The Babylonians had theirs

  307. and it ended.

  308. The Persians had theirs

  309. and it ended.

  310. The Egyptians had theirs

  311. and it ended.

  312. And as someone pointed out

  313. to me recently,

  314. who would have thought

  315. in Mary's day

  316. that 2,000 years later

  317. we would be sitting here today

  318. and the first thing

  319. that you and I would think of

  320. when we hear the name Caesar

  321. is dog food.

  322. And who would have thought

  323. that 2,000 years later

  324. after this event

  325. that literally billions of people

  326. around this planet

  327. today and down the ages

  328. have had their lives transformed

  329. by the baby boy

  330. who was born to this girl

  331. in this backwater town.

  332. See, the proof's in the pudding,

  333. isn't it?

  334. His kingdom will have no end.

  335. The event

  336. which the whole

  337. of redemption history

  338. has been moving forward to

  339. is about to kick off

  340. and it's about to kick off

  341. in this teenager's womb.

  342. The virgin

  343. will give birth

  344. to a son.

  345. Do you see,

  346. it's not man's doing

  347. this birth,

  348. it's going to be God's doing.

  349. Something spoken about

  350. long before this moment

  351. by the prophet Isaiah.

  352. Speaking about

  353. a future time

  354. to his generation

  355. when God would come

  356. to deliver his people.

  357. And what will be

  358. the sign of that happening?

  359. Therefore,

  360. the Lord himself

  361. will give you a sign.

  362. The virgin will conceive

  363. and give birth

  364. to a son

  365. and will call him

  366. Emmanuel.

  367. But maybe you hear

  368. this morning,

  369. you're thinking,

  370. virgin birth,

  371. seriously?

  372. Sounds a bit like

  373. Loch Ness Monster

  374. and the Leprechauns

  375. if you ask me.

  376. I mean,

  377. is this Christianity's

  378. fairy tale feature?

  379. Does it matter?

  380. Does it matter?

  381. Well,

  382. let me just say to you

  383. today

  384. that the virgin birth

  385. really matters.

  386. It really matters.

  387. For the saviour

  388. that you and I need

  389. needs to be

  390. one of us

  391. so that he can stand

  392. as our representative.

  393. And the saviour

  394. that we need

  395. needs to be

  396. above us

  397. so that

  398. he is unstained

  399. by the sin

  400. that plagues

  401. each one of us,

  402. meaning that he can live

  403. the perfect

  404. and sinless life

  405. before God,

  406. the one that he gives

  407. to his people

  408. and makes them

  409. right with God.

  410. Friends,

  411. the virgin birth

  412. really matters.

  413. And if it really matters,

  414. let me tell you

  415. what it means.

  416. Firstly,

  417. it means that you

  418. and I are lost.

  419. We are lost.

  420. This is one almighty

  421. custard pie in the face

  422. to mankind's thinking

  423. that you and I

  424. can save ourselves.

  425. the human gene pool

  426. is no place

  427. to go fishing

  428. for a saviour.

  429. And the answer

  430. to the problem

  431. of the brokenness

  432. and rebellion

  433. needs to come from

  434. outside of us,

  435. not inside of us.

  436. It means that we are

  437. lost

  438. without

  439. God's intervention

  440. in our lives.

  441. It means we are lost

  442. outside of Jesus Christ.

  443. And secondly,

  444. it means that we are

  445. loved.

  446. Because God could

  447. quite justifiably

  448. have passed over us

  449. and left us

  450. to our own devices.

  451. Passed over us

  452. and had nothing

  453. to do with us.

  454. But he acted.

  455. This is what we celebrate,

  456. isn't it,

  457. at Christmas time,

  458. that love came down.

  459. I remember

  460. growing up at school

  461. and there was a song

  462. that was popular

  463. written by,

  464. I think it was

  465. Joan Osborne,

  466. I googled it this morning

  467. that we used to sing

  468. in the playground.

  469. And the chorus went,

  470. what if God was one of us?

  471. Do you remember that song?

  472. What if God was one of us?

  473. Just a slob

  474. like one of us?

  475. Just a stranger

  476. on the bus

  477. trying to make

  478. his way home?

  479. Now whatever Joan Osborne

  480. was trying to say

  481. in that song,

  482. let me tell you

  483. that what we celebrate

  484. at Christmas

  485. is God

  486. coming down.

  487. The truth of Christmas

  488. is that God

  489. in the person

  490. of his son

  491. came down

  492. into humanity's

  493. broken,

  494. complicated

  495. and messy

  496. equation.

  497. that God

  498. in the form

  499. of Jesus Christ

  500. took on flesh.

  501. He came to live

  502. where we live

  503. and the words

  504. of John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  505. and if you want

  506. your minds blown

  507. hang out in John

    John 1 chapter mention

  508. chapter 1 this week,

  509. he tabernacled,

  510. he came to be

  511. with us

  512. in order

  513. that reconciliation

  514. to the God

  515. who made us

  516. would become

  517. a distinct possibility.

  518. Do you see

  519. how the virgin birth

  520. tells his friends

  521. that when we weren't

  522. looking for God,

  523. God came

  524. looking for us.

  525. He came looking

  526. for us.

  527. He came down

  528. to find us,

  529. to lead us

  530. out of death.

  531. This is the extent

  532. that God went to

  533. to rescue us.

  534. And maybe you're

  535. here today

  536. and you're asking

  537. yourself,

  538. does God really

  539. care about my life?

  540. If that's you,

  541. then I would

  542. invite you to see

  543. the baby in the manger

  544. that's promised

  545. about here,

  546. Emmanuel,

  547. God with us,

  548. as a resounding

  549. yes.

  550. Does God care?

  551. Yes,

  552. he does.

  553. He cares enough

  554. that he sent

  555. his son

  556. to come and seek

  557. and to save

  558. the lost.

  559. He cares,

  560. friends,

  561. he cares.

  562. Christ by

  563. highest heaven

  564. adored,

  565. Christ the

  566. everlasting Lord,

  567. late in time

  568. behold him come,

  569. offspring

  570. of a virgin's womb,

  571. veiled in flesh,

  572. the Godhead sea,

  573. hail the incarnate

  574. deity,

  575. pleased as man

  576. with man to dwell,

  577. Jesus our

  578. Emmanuel.

  579. I'd encourage you

  580. to stop and to think

  581. about the lyrics

  582. of some of the

  583. Christmas songs

  584. that we sing

  585. because they are

  586. packed full

  587. of tremendous

  588. theology,

  589. friends.

  590. And if that's

  591. hard for you

  592. and I to get

  593. our heads around,

  594. and it is at times,

  595. isn't it?

  596. Just think how

  597. Mary's feeling

  598. at this point

  599. in the story.

  600. Gabriel's just

  601. dropped that one

  602. on her.

  603. How is she

  604. feeling?

  605. Well lastly,

  606. notice what she

  607. is.

  608. What does she

  609. say?

  610. I'm sorry

  611. Gabriel,

  612. you've got the

  613. wrong girl.

  614. If you head

  615. on down the

  616. road,

  617. I'm sure

  618. you'll find

  619. somebody else

  620. who's better

  621. equipped from

  622. the job.

  623. She doesn't

  624. say that.

  625. Do you see

  626. how what began

  627. with fear in

  628. her mind

  629. ends in

  630. faith?

  631. Mary responds

  632. by declaring

  633. and let's have

  634. another song

  635. cue the Beatles,

  636. let it be,

  637. may it be,

  638. is this what

  639. she says?

  640. And so

  641. having visited

  642. and being

  643. affirmed by

  644. Elizabeth,

  645. who the boy

  646. in her womb

  647. jumps for joy

  648. at the very

  649. presence of

  650. his Lord,

  651. do you see

  652. how Mary

  653. can't contain

  654. her praise

  655. about the

  656. truth of

  657. everything that

  658. the Lord

  659. is doing?

  660. Verse 46,

  661. and here we

  662. hit the song,

  663. Mary exclaims,

  664. God,

  665. my soul,

  666. what glorifies

  667. you?

  668. God,

  669. my heart,

  670. what does it

  671. do?

  672. It magnifies

  673. you.

  674. Notice all

  675. the personal

  676. pronouns in

  677. this section.

  678. Do you see

  679. it?

  680. My spirit,

  681. the mighty

  682. one has done

  683. great things

  684. for me.

  685. She is no

  686. passive actor

  687. in this drama.

  688. She is in

  689. this heart

  690. and soul

  691. and her

  692. whole being

  693. rejoices

  694. at this

  695. news.

  696. Fascinating

  697. again that

  698. this song

  699. says nothing

  700. about a

  701. baby.

  702. This song

  703. says everything

  704. about the

  705. significance

  706. of the baby

  707. boy who's

  708. in her womb

  709. because she

  710. knows what

  711. it means.

  712. And so having

  713. seen what's

  714. going on

  715. outside the

  716. song,

  717. let's quickly

  718. have a look

  719. at what's

  720. going on

  721. inside the

  722. song because

  723. as we think

  724. about what

  725. Mary's singing

  726. here,

  727. declaring,

  728. it tells us

  729. two great

  730. things about

  731. the things

  732. that Mary

  733. knows in

  734. her life.

  735. And it

  736. encourages us

  737. this morning

  738. to think

  739. about these

  740. things in

  741. our own

  742. lives as

  743. well.

  744. They reveal

  745. to us two

  746. great things.

  747. Firstly,

  748. who she knows

  749. her God

  750. to be.

  751. He is the

  752. promise-keeping

  753. God.

  754. This is who

  755. he is.

  756. Mary looks

  757. down the

  758. corridors of

  759. time and

  760. she recalls

  761. the promises

  762. that God

  763. made to

  764. Abraham,

  765. the promises

  766. that she's

  767. grown up

  768. on,

  769. the promises

  770. that she's

  771. heard,

  772. no doubt

  773. from her

  774. family.

  775. And she

  776. recalls God's

  777. promise to

  778. rescue and

  779. to bless.

  780. And all the

  781. times that God

  782. delivered his

  783. people in the

  784. past with his

  785. mighty arm.

  786. And Mary's

  787. declaring,

  788. world,

  789. my God's at

  790. it again.

  791. My God is

  792. at it again

  793. and this

  794. time he's

  795. at it again

  796. in the

  797. greatest way

  798. possible.

  799. And so she

  800. says,

  801. doesn't she,

  802. my God is

  803. what?

  804. Mighty?

  805. She's

  806. reveling in

  807. the truth

  808. that her

  809. God,

  810. do you see,

  811. doesn't work

  812. on the

  813. basis of

  814. human

  815. limitations.

  816. Her God

  817. is the

  818. one who

  819. defines the

  820. realm of

  821. possibility.

  822. He is the

  823. God who

  824. formed the

  825. world out of

  826. nothing.

  827. He is the

  828. God who

  829. parted the

  830. Red Sea.

  831. He is the

  832. God of

  833. angel armies

  834. and for

  835. him,

  836. nothing is

  837. impossible.

  838. And maybe

  839. some of us

  840. here today,

  841. we need to

  842. recapture the

  843. wonderful truth

  844. about this

  845. God,

  846. that nothing

  847. is too

  848. great for

  849. him.

  850. He doesn't

  851. work according

  852. to our

  853. agenda.

  854. He doesn't

  855. work according

  856. to our

  857. plans.

  858. He isn't

  859. limited to

  860. working within

  861. our contours

  862. or being able

  863. to fathom

  864. things.

  865. Our God

  866. makes the

  867. impossible

  868. possible.

  869. He is the

  870. mighty one

  871. and He is

  872. the merciful

  873. one.

  874. Verse 50,

  875. His mercy

  876. extends to

  877. those who

  878. fear Him.

  879. Feel the

  880. invitation in

  881. those words.

  882. Verse 54,

  883. He is

  884. remembered to

  885. be merciful

  886. to Israel.

  887. Our God

  888. doesn't treat

  889. us as we

  890. deserve.

  891. That's what

  892. she's saying.

  893. He doesn't

  894. treat us as

  895. we deserve.

  896. He treats

  897. us so much

  898. better than

  899. we deserve.

  900. And our

  901. God, He's

  902. got a track

  903. record of

  904. overthrowing the

  905. proud and

  906. lifting up the

  907. humble.

  908. That's the

  909. shape of

  910. His

  911. kingdom.

  912. Overthrown

  913. the proud,

  914. lifting up

  915. this humble.

  916. Said in the

  917. present tense

  918. as if to

  919. say this is

  920. already a

  921. done deal.

  922. This is

  923. what He's

  924. done.

  925. She knows

  926. who her

  927. God is and

  928. secondly she

  929. knows who

  930. herself is.

  931. She knows

  932. herself to

  933. be rather.

  934. Do you see

  935. how she's not

  936. simply a

  937. conduit of

  938. God's blessing

  939. and favour?

  940. She's a

  941. recipient of

  942. it.

  943. For this

  944. great news of

  945. rescue for

  946. the world

  947. is great news

  948. of rescue for

  949. the world,

  950. but it's great

  951. use of rescue

  952. for her.

  953. She knows she

  954. needs a

  955. saviour,

  956. one that she's

  957. not worthy

  958. of, and she

  959. knows she's

  960. part of a

  961. people who

  962. need a

  963. saviour that

  964. they're not

  965. worthy of.

  966. It's the only

  967. requirement,

  968. isn't it, of

  969. grace, that we

  970. realise we are

  971. unworthy of it.

  972. You see how

  973. Mary uses two

  974. words to describe

  975. herself at

  976. verse 48, which

  977. gives us just a

  978. little window into

  979. her heart here.

  980. Do you see her

  981. talking about

  982. firstly her

  983. humble estate?

  984. In other words,

  985. she's bowed the

  986. knee to this

  987. God, that's the

  988. stance of her

  989. heart, her

  990. humble estate,

  991. and as well

  992. secondly the

  993. humble estate

  994. of his

  995. servant.

  996. God, I'm

  997. yours, says

  998. Mary, I am

  999. yours.

  1000. And so she

  1001. joins in the

  1002. line of

  1003. Christian men

  1004. and women

  1005. down the

  1006. ages who

  1007. would offer

  1008. their lives

  1009. in service

  1010. of this

  1011. God.

  1012. The words

  1013. of Jim

  1014. Elliot, the

  1015. American

  1016. missionary who

  1017. took the

  1018. gospel to

  1019. an unreached

  1020. tribe in

  1021. Ecuador before

  1022. being tragically

  1023. martyred.

  1024. He is no

  1025. fool who

  1026. gives what

  1027. he cannot

  1028. keep to

  1029. gain that

  1030. which he

  1031. cannot lose.

  1032. I'm yours,

  1033. says Mary,

  1034. I'm yours.

  1035. And you've

  1036. got to admire

  1037. Mary for her

  1038. bravery here,

  1039. don't you?

  1040. For her to

  1041. walk by

  1042. faith here

  1043. is a very

  1044. costly thing

  1045. in her

  1046. life.

  1047. Think about

  1048. it.

  1049. Put it

  1050. yourself in

  1051. her shoes.

  1052. She, at

  1053. this point,

  1054. has got to

  1055. go and tell

  1056. Joseph that

  1057. she's pregnant

  1058. and he's

  1059. not the

  1060. father.

  1061. May well

  1062. cost her

  1063. her marriage,

  1064. all of those

  1065. dreams of

  1066. children and

  1067. of a family

  1068. home and

  1069. of grandchildren

  1070. may well

  1071. disappear in

  1072. an instant.

  1073. And not

  1074. just with

  1075. Joseph, is

  1076. Mary going

  1077. to take a

  1078. massive risk

  1079. here?

  1080. She's

  1081. jeopardizing

  1082. her standing

  1083. in society,

  1084. Nazareth,

  1085. as we said

  1086. at the

  1087. beginning,

  1088. not a

  1089. big place,

  1090. not an

  1091. awful lot

  1092. going on,

  1093. desperate, I'm

  1094. sure, for

  1095. some gossip.

  1096. And people

  1097. being people

  1098. being people,

  1099. as soon as

  1100. one person

  1101. finds out

  1102. that Mary's

  1103. pregnant, it

  1104. won't be long

  1105. before the

  1106. whole time

  1107. finds out,

  1108. and Mary's

  1109. reputation

  1110. would be in

  1111. tatters,

  1112. probably along

  1113. with her

  1114. parents.

  1115. Mary's got a

  1116. lot to lose

  1117. here in

  1118. trusting God,

  1119. but she

  1120. declares,

  1121. let it be.

  1122. despite it

  1123. all, she's

  1124. willing to

  1125. surrender her

  1126. life to

  1127. God's will.

  1128. What an

  1129. example that

  1130. is of

  1131. faith, of

  1132. fearless

  1133. faith.

  1134. You know,

  1135. as soon as

  1136. we enter the

  1137. season of

  1138. work Christmas

  1139. parties, of

  1140. school nativity

  1141. plays, of

  1142. time with

  1143. friends and

  1144. family, let

  1145. me challenge

  1146. us at the

  1147. outset of

  1148. Advent.

  1149. Are we

  1150. willing to

  1151. be brave for

  1152. our association

  1153. with this

  1154. child?

  1155. Are we

  1156. willing to

  1157. lay our

  1158. reputations on

  1159. the line for

  1160. the sake of

  1161. being obedient

  1162. to God?

  1163. And are we

  1164. willing to

  1165. make Mary's

  1166. declaration, the

  1167. one from her

  1168. heart, our

  1169. declaration, and

  1170. say today that

  1171. God, I am your

  1172. humble servant.

  1173. Let it be.

  1174. Let it be.

  1175. Interesting, if

  1176. you've got a

  1177. KJV there, some

  1178. of the older

  1179. translations of

  1180. the Bible,

  1181. Mary's words are

  1182. recorded as, be

  1183. it unto me

  1184. according to

  1185. thy words.

  1186. That's what it

  1187. says.

  1188. And those

  1189. words are

  1190. extremely close,

  1191. if you think

  1192. about it, to

  1193. the words that

  1194. her boy in

  1195. her womb would

  1196. utter years

  1197. later as he

  1198. found himself

  1199. on the eve of

  1200. his death in

  1201. the garden of

  1202. Gethsemane.

  1203. For Jesus, with

  1204. the fear of

  1205. the cross pressing

  1206. in on his

  1207. soul, would

  1208. say, not as

  1209. I will,

  1210. Father, not

  1211. as I will, but

  1212. as your will

  1213. be done.

  1214. You see, Mary

  1215. made great

  1216. sacrifices for

  1217. the baby in

  1218. her womb, but

  1219. he would make

  1220. an infinitely

  1221. greater one

  1222. for her.

  1223. Mary willingly

  1224. accepted the

  1225. shame that would

  1226. come on her for

  1227. bearing this

  1228. child, but

  1229. Jesus would

  1230. bear the shame

  1231. for the sin of

  1232. the world on

  1233. himself as he

  1234. made the

  1235. greatest ever

  1236. sacrifice,

  1237. surrendering his

  1238. life on the

  1239. cross for the

  1240. sin of his

  1241. people.

  1242. The sacrifice

  1243. we'll be

  1244. remembering in

  1245. just a few

  1246. moments' time

  1247. when we take

  1248. communion together.

  1249. And the

  1250. words of that

  1251. old hymn,

  1252. bearing shame

  1253. and scoffing

  1254. rude, in my

  1255. place condemned

  1256. he stood, sealed

  1257. my pardon with

  1258. his blood.

  1259. Hallelujah, what

  1260. a savior.

  1261. here.

  1262. Friends, just as

  1263. we close, I

  1264. wonder if you've

  1265. had fun maybe

  1266. yesterday opening

  1267. the first day of

  1268. your advent

  1269. calendar.

  1270. Did we have

  1271. fun with that

  1272. yesterday?

  1273. Yeah?

  1274. Love a bit of

  1275. chocolate, any

  1276. excuse will do.

  1277. I find it

  1278. fascinating that

  1279. everyone in our

  1280. society does

  1281. advent.

  1282. Do you know

  1283. what I find

  1284. that fascinating?

  1285. Find that really

  1286. interesting.

  1287. Do you know

  1288. what advent means?

  1289. It just means

  1290. coming.

  1291. It just means

  1292. coming.

  1293. We're counting

  1294. down the days

  1295. to Jesus'

  1296. first coming

  1297. into the world.

  1298. That's what we're

  1299. doing as we're

  1300. opening those

  1301. little windows,

  1302. isn't it?

  1303. We're counting

  1304. down the days

  1305. to his first

  1306. coming into the

  1307. world.

  1308. Friends, if you're

  1309. looking for a

  1310. wonderful way

  1311. into an evangelistic

  1312. conversation this

  1313. week, go with

  1314. advent.

  1315. Do you know

  1316. what advent

  1317. really means?

  1318. Do you know

  1319. what advent

  1320. really means?

  1321. But as we

  1322. celebrate his

  1323. first coming,

  1324. let's remember,

  1325. like Mary here,

  1326. that we are

  1327. waiting on a

  1328. coming.

  1329. Now, we're not

  1330. waiting on his

  1331. first coming.

  1332. We, on the

  1333. other side,

  1334. awaiting on his

  1335. second coming.

  1336. When he won't

  1337. come as meek and

  1338. mild Jesus, he

  1339. will come as

  1340. judging and

  1341. victorious Jesus,

  1342. and he will make

  1343. right all that is

  1344. wrong with the

  1345. world.

  1346. Now, as we think

  1347. about the promise,

  1348. not of his first

  1349. coming, we think

  1350. about the

  1351. fulfillment of the

  1352. promise of his

  1353. first coming, we

  1354. think about the

  1355. promise of his

  1356. second coming.

  1357. What have we got

  1358. to go on?

  1359. What have we got

  1360. to go on?

  1361. What we've got to

  1362. go on is exactly

  1363. what Mary had

  1364. to go on

  1365. here.

  1366. She's staking

  1367. it all on the

  1368. promise of

  1369. God.

  1370. She's staking

  1371. it all on the

  1372. truth that she

  1373. knows in her

  1374. life, that this

  1375. God keeps his

  1376. promises.

  1377. She's staking it

  1378. all on the

  1379. word of the

  1380. Lord.

  1381. And that's

  1382. where we find

  1383. ourselves in the

  1384. story.

  1385. So as we open

  1386. our Advent

  1387. calendars,

  1388. friends, let's

  1389. remember we are

  1390. celebrating the

  1391. first coming, but

  1392. we are awaiting the

  1393. second coming.

  1394. George Michael

  1395. wrote a song

  1396. about the

  1397. person in his

  1398. life who broke

  1399. their promises.

  1400. Mary says, come

  1401. and have a

  1402. listen to my

  1403. song.

  1404. I think that's

  1405. why Luke wrote

  1406. it, wasn't

  1407. it?

  1408. Come and have

  1409. a listen to

  1410. her song.

  1411. And let her

  1412. tell you just

  1413. how good her

  1414. God is.

  1415. And let her

  1416. tell you about

  1417. the God who

  1418. keeps his

  1419. promises.

  1420. And don't

  1421. just admire the

  1422. song.

  1423. Don't just

  1424. admire the

  1425. song.

  1426. Come and be

  1427. part of the

  1428. song.

  1429. And make

  1430. this song your

  1431. song.

  1432. For this God,

  1433. he has done

  1434. great things

  1435. for me, says

  1436. Mary.

  1437. And his

  1438. mercy, and

  1439. here's the

  1440. invitation to

  1441. come to know

  1442. this God this

  1443. morning, his

  1444. mercy extends to

  1445. those who fear

  1446. him from

  1447. generation to

  1448. generation.

  1449. This is the

  1450. God who keeps

  1451. his promises.

  1452. Let's pray.

  1453. And so

  1454. Father, in the

  1455. silence now we

  1456. would just offer

  1457. to you our own

  1458. prayers.

  1459. As we begin to

  1460. think about

  1461. Christmas, as we

  1462. begin to think

  1463. about Advent and

  1464. everything that

  1465. comes with that.

  1466. And Lord, in the

  1467. silence now we

  1468. would want to

  1469. make Mary's

  1470. prayer our

  1471. prayer and say

  1472. let it be.

  1473. Let it be.

  1474. And so

  1475. thank you for

  1476. the wonderful

  1477. truth that you

  1478. are the God

  1479. who makes all

  1480. things possible.

  1481. That you are

  1482. the God who

  1483. loves us so

  1484. much that you

  1485. would send

  1486. your Son to

  1487. find us and

  1488. to seek us and

  1489. to save us.

  1490. And Lord, I

  1491. pray that as we

  1492. journey through

  1493. Advent, as we

  1494. journey through

  1495. this little series

  1496. as a church, that

  1497. you would help

  1498. us to savor your

  1499. greatness more.

  1500. And so it's in

  1501. Jesus' precious

  1502. and worthy name

  1503. that we pray.

  1504. Amen.
