  1. Right, well, good evening.

  2. Tonight we're looking at possibly one of the best-known stories in the Bible.

  3. At least in name, even if not really in full understanding of the content.

  4. I would say it probably sits closely behind the nativity,

  5. and maybe even ahead of the events of Easter,

  6. in the understanding of our secular culture around us.

  7. Because, you see, it's the classic underdog story.

  8. And there's something in our psyche that loves an underdog.

  9. Whether it's the Jamaican bobsleigh team,

  10. or the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, or however you pronounce that,

  11. or the 5,000 to 1 outsiders, Leicester winning the Premier League.

  12. Whatever it is, we love these stories of unlikely people winning against all the odds.

  13. And so here we've got a boy against a giant.

  14. You can't get much better than that.

  15. Although, as we look at it a bit more,

  16. we'll see that perhaps the tables are not stacked quite the way it looks at first.

  17. But it's also a story of a people that are in need of a hero,

  18. but who are looking in all the wrong places.

  19. So hopefully tonight we'll be able to get past that familiarity,

  20. and learn something about what this passage,

  21. about events so far from us in time and place,

  22. can teach us today.

  23. And the first three verses

  24. are basically setting the scene,

  25. giving the context for the rest of the chapter.

  26. Chronology is not entirely clear,

  27. quite how this sits with the previous chapter.

  28. I think it may be that they overlap,

  29. that this sits somewhere in the middle,

  30. particularly the way that David's introduced,

  31. as if we've never heard of him before.

  32. It sounds as if these are separate accounts of separate stories,

  33. each with their introduction, events, and conclusion.

  34. Certainly later on in 1 Samuel,

  35. the events of David's life are clearly told out of order

  36. when his last words are reported

  37. before the exploits of him and his mighty men.

  38. So it doesn't really particularly matter.

  39. It's really a bit of an aside,

  40. but just if you're slightly confused about what's going on,

  41. that might be why.

  42. But we have here the Philistines,

  43. and they appear to have been fairly recent invaders of the land

  44. by recent, you know, last century or two.

  45. They seem to probably be some of the sea peoples

  46. that the Egyptians write about.

  47. And interestingly,

  48. recent DNA testing of pig bones

  49. seems to tell us that they came from the Aegean.

  50. Who knew that you could DNA test

  51. 3,000-year-old pig bones

  52. to tell where they'd come from,

  53. but apparently you can.

  54. But these Philistines, anyway,

  55. have settled to the west of Israel

  56. and to five main cities.

  57. Gaza, right down on the coast,

  58. still a name that we know today.

  59. Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath.

  60. And Gath is the closest one to Israel,

  61. right at the east of the Philistine territory.

  62. And that's where Goliath comes from.

  63. And so in this passage,

  64. we see that the Philistines

  65. have gathered their army together

  66. and are encroaching into Judah.

  67. And Saul has gathered together

  68. the Israelites to oppose them.

  69. And the two armies are lined up

  70. facing each other

  71. across the valley of Elah.

  72. This is on the road from Gath

  73. to Bethlehem and Jerusalem.

  74. And in fact,

  75. it's only about 20 miles away

  76. from Bethlehem

  77. where David lives.

  78. That's similar to the distance

  79. from here to North Beric.

  80. Something easily walkable in a day.

  81. But we see here

  82. that no actual fighting's taking place.

  83. they seem to have reached

  84. some sort of stalemate.

  85. The two armies lined up

  86. against each other.

  87. And Israelites

  88. are in a good defensive position

  89. but don't seem to have the strength

  90. or maybe just the courage

  91. to go on the attack.

  92. But there's a routine going.

  93. Every morning,

  94. both sides line up

  95. facing each other

  96. across the valley

  97. and shout their war cries

  98. at each other.

  99. because that's going to be effective.

  100. And every morning

  101. and evening

  102. the Philistine champion

  103. comes out

  104. and shouts

  105. his defiant challenge.

  106. And we see that this

  107. has been going on

  108. for 40 days.

  109. This is not just something

  110. that's gone on

  111. for a day or two.

  112. This is going on

  113. a long time.

  114. And Israelites

  115. are absolutely terrified.

  116. And quite frankly,

  117. I don't blame them.

  118. Because when we

  119. carry on to the next few verses

  120. we read about

  121. the Philistine champion.

  122. In verses 4 to 7

  123. we read

  124. the description

  125. of Goliath.

  126. And the first thing

  127. that's obvious about him

  128. is his height.

  129. At six cubits

  130. and a span

  131. depending on the size

  132. of your cubit

  133. it's somewhere

  134. around nine foot four.

  135. a good few inches

  136. taller than

  137. the tallest man

  138. recorded in recent history

  139. Robert Wadlow

  140. who measured

  141. in at eight foot eleven.

  142. So

  143. only five inches

  144. above that.

  145. It may be

  146. that this is the result

  147. of some sort of

  148. genetic anomaly

  149. because certainly

  150. it seems to run

  151. in the family.

  152. His brothers

  153. seem to be huge

  154. as well.

  155. But he's clearly

  156. not just tall

  157. but

  158. also strong.

  159. Or at least

  160. he's certainly

  161. not weak

  162. going by the weight

  163. of armour

  164. that he's carrying.

  165. He's an impressive

  166. figure

  167. standing there

  168. tall

  169. and armoured

  170. like a tank.

  171. Bronze helmet

  172. bronze

  173. armour scales

  174. bronze greaves

  175. on his legs.

  176. This is not just

  177. heavy

  178. but this is expensive.

  179. This is all

  180. the best

  181. of the military

  182. hardware

  183. that you could

  184. have at the time.

  185. And he's even

  186. got that new

  187. technology

  188. he has an iron

  189. head on his

  190. spear.

  191. This is

  192. someone to be

  193. feared.

  194. Standing in front

  195. of him

  196. is a man

  197. carrying his

  198. shield.

  199. He's confident

  200. and he's arrogant

  201. as he shouts out

  202. his defiant

  203. challenge.

  204. And in verses

  205. 8 to 11

  206. we discover

  207. what this

  208. challenge is.

  209. Choose a

  210. champion.

  211. choose a

  212. representative

  213. to fight

  214. me

  215. on behalf

  216. of all

  217. of you.

  218. Your fate

  219. depends on

  220. the success

  221. of this

  222. single combat.

  223. Forget about

  224. these armies

  225. about this

  226. defensive position

  227. that you've got

  228. yourself into.

  229. Gamble

  230. everything

  231. on the success

  232. of this

  233. one fight

  234. man

  235. against man.

  236. And if

  237. you remember

  238. back before

  239. Christmas

  240. in chapter

  241. 10

  242. we read

  243. that Israel

  244. did just

  245. that.

  246. They chose

  247. a champion

  248. to represent

  249. them.

  250. They chose

  251. someone to go

  252. out before

  253. them and

  254. fight their

  255. battles.

  256. they chose

  257. an impressive

  258. young man

  259. without equal

  260. among the

  261. Israelites.

  262. A head

  263. taller than

  264. any of the

  265. others.

  266. A man

  267. named Saul.

  268. He may not

  269. be a giant

  270. but he's still

  271. an impressive

  272. champion.

  273. He's fought

  274. several successful

  275. battles and

  276. as we read

  277. further down

  278. he has the

  279. kit.

  280. He has the

  281. bronze helmet.

  282. He has the

  283. coat of armor.

  284. So where

  285. is he?

  286. He's there

  287. but like

  288. the rest of

  289. the Israelites

  290. he's terrified.

  291. It doesn't

  292. sound as if

  293. he's there

  294. out at the

  295. front facing

  296. the enemy

  297. leading his

  298. army.

  299. Instead he's

  300. skulking

  301. somewhere in

  302. the back

  303. probably back

  304. in his tent

  305. in the camp.

  306. Israel had

  307. wanted a

  308. champion

  309. but when

  310. they chose

  311. a human

  312. hero

  313. they found

  314. him distinctly

  315. lacking.

  316. They needed

  317. someone else

  318. to step up

  319. and fight

  320. for them.

  321. And I think

  322. as we look

  323. around

  324. we see that

  325. our world

  326. too is

  327. looking for

  328. its own

  329. heroes.

  330. We may not

  331. be facing a

  332. giant

  333. or an enemy

  334. army

  335. but our world

  336. is groaning

  337. and people

  338. are hurting.

  339. Around the

  340. world

  341. there are

  342. wars

  343. and conflicts

  344. and strained

  345. relationships

  346. between nations.

  347. Our physical

  348. environment is

  349. polluted

  350. exploited

  351. and under

  352. threat.

  353. Our government

  354. quite frankly

  355. is in a total

  356. shambles.

  357. I think

  358. whatever your

  359. political persuasion

  360. you can agree

  361. with me on that.

  362. but neither

  363. to home

  364. in Scotland.

  365. It's estimated

  366. that over

  367. 600 people

  368. will be sleeping

  369. rough in our

  370. cities tonight.

  371. And that's

  372. not counting

  373. the thousands

  374. and various

  375. sorts of

  376. temporary

  377. accommodation.

  378. Or then

  379. there are

  380. the personal

  381. crises,

  382. the broken

  383. relationships,

  384. the illnesses,

  385. the bereavements,

  386. the unemployment,

  387. the loneliness,

  388. the depression,

  389. the anxieties,

  390. the everyday

  391. struggles of

  392. life,

  393. big and

  394. small.

  395. People are

  396. looking for

  397. heroes,

  398. for someone

  399. that can put

  400. things right,

  401. for someone

  402. that can stand

  403. up for them.

  404. And this is

  405. nothing new.

  406. Throughout

  407. history people

  408. have been

  409. telling stories

  410. of champions,

  411. of heroes,

  412. of people

  413. greater than

  414. themselves.

  415. We love

  416. the stories

  417. of William

  418. Wallace and

  419. Robert the

  420. Bruce,

  421. and we

  422. don't

  423. particularly

  424. care about

  425. the historical

  426. accuracy of

  427. them.

  428. We flock

  429. to see

  430. superhero

  431. films,

  432. heroes with

  433. special powers

  434. that they will

  435. use to

  436. right wrongs,

  437. to defend

  438. the ordinary

  439. people.

  440. But back

  441. to real

  442. life,

  443. we find

  444. that,

  445. like Saul,

  446. our heroes

  447. have feet

  448. of clay.

  449. One

  450. repeated

  451. theme of

  452. the last

  453. couple of

  454. years is

  455. of how

  456. our heroes,

  457. our role

  458. models,

  459. are shown

  460. to be

  461. flawed,

  462. and not

  463. who we

  464. thought them

  465. to be.

  466. Around the

  467. world,

  468. statues have

  469. been pulled

  470. down of

  471. people where

  472. we find we

  473. can no

  474. longer overlook

  475. the darker

  476. side of

  477. who they

  478. were,

  479. people that

  480. we once

  481. celebrated.

  482. But then

  483. also we

  484. see figures

  485. across the

  486. whole spectrum

  487. of public

  488. life,

  489. whether in

  490. entertainment,

  491. sports,

  492. politics,

  493. business,

  494. have been

  495. disgraced by

  496. the Me Too

  497. campaign and

  498. other things

  499. like that,

  500. as we've

  501. seen that

  502. these people

  503. that we

  504. thought we

  505. could look

  506. up to,

  507. maybe

  508. weren't so

  509. great after

  510. all.

  511. Or maybe,

  512. maybe like

  513. Saul,

  514. we think

  515. that we

  516. are the

  517. ones that

  518. are meant

  519. to be the

  520. champions,

  521. but we're

  522. aware of

  523. our own

  524. inadequacies,

  525. and so

  526. we retreat

  527. from the

  528. battlefield in

  529. fear.

  530. Our culture

  531. would tell us

  532. to search

  533. for the

  534. hero inside

  535. yourself,

  536. but we

  537. know what

  538. is inside

  539. ourselves.

  540. We know

  541. there is no

  542. hero there.

  543. So then

  544. in the next

  545. big chunk

  546. of the

  547. passage,

  548. from verses

  549. 12 all the

  550. way down

  551. to 40,

  552. we're

  553. introduced

  554. to an

  555. unlikely

  556. champion,

  557. David.

  558. He's

  559. described as

  560. being little

  561. more than

  562. a boy,

  563. boy.

  564. Terms

  565. used are

  566. quite vague,

  567. but he's

  568. certainly not

  569. a grown man,

  570. probably some

  571. sort of

  572. teenager,

  573. not quite

  574. sure,

  575. but certainly

  576. he's the

  577. youngest of

  578. the family,

  579. and although

  580. he may be

  581. young,

  582. he is

  583. hardy.

  584. He's not

  585. closeted at

  586. home,

  587. but he's

  588. out looking

  589. after the

  590. sheep,

  591. and that

  592. involves

  593. protecting

  594. them from

  595. whatever

  596. dangers

  597. might come

  598. their way.

  599. But last

  600. week,

  601. we were

  602. also

  603. reminded

  604. in

  605. Alistair's

  606. In Unimitable

  607. Way,

  608. that as well

  609. as keeping

  610. sheep,

  611. he likes to

  612. write

  613. psalms

  614. and

  615. pusing

  616. them.

  617. For him,

  618. the worship

  619. of God

  620. is not

  621. just an

  622. occasional

  623. civic

  624. duty.

  625. That's an

  626. integral part

  627. of his

  628. life.

  629. God

  630. directed

  631. Samuel to

  632. him,

  633. saying that

  634. God looks

  635. on the

  636. heart.

  637. And later

  638. we find

  639. David

  640. described,

  641. despite all

  642. of his

  643. faults,

  644. as a

  645. man after

  646. God's

  647. own

  648. heart.

  649. And so

  650. we see

  651. that Jesse

  652. sends David

  653. with food

  654. to his

  655. older

  656. brothers,

  657. and to

  658. bring back

  659. news.

  660. they're

  661. about a

  662. day's

  663. journey

  664. away.

  665. He

  666. seems to

  667. have a

  668. tent with

  669. him,

  670. as mentioned

  671. later,

  672. and I

  673. assume he

  674. has a

  675. donkey or

  676. some other

  677. sort of

  678. beast of

  679. burden to

  680. carry all

  681. this stuff

  682. with him

  683. because it's

  684. a bit much

  685. to put in a

  686. backpack.

  687. But so

  688. he gets

  689. there,

  690. he delivers

  691. the goods

  692. to the

  693. keeper of

  694. the

  695. stores,

  696. and to

  697. me

  698. sounds

  699. slightly

  700. naively

  701. goes to

  702. talk to his

  703. brothers on

  704. the front

  705. line,

  706. because of

  707. course that's

  708. what you do,

  709. you just go to

  710. the front

  711. line for a

  712. chat.

  713. But when

  714. he's there,

  715. he sees

  716. what's going

  717. on.

  718. He sees

  719. Goliath,

  720. what's

  721. going on,

  722. he sees

  723. what's

  724. really

  725. going on.

  726. Because the

  727. question he

  728. asks the

  729. people shows

  730. how he

  731. understands

  732. the situation.

  733. Who is

  734. this

  735. uncircumcised

  736. Philistine

  737. that he

  738. should defy

  739. the armies

  740. of the

  741. living God?

  742. As far as

  743. David sees

  744. it,

  745. this is not

  746. a battle

  747. between two

  748. earthly armies.

  749. This is

  750. defiance

  751. against the

  752. living God,

  753. as opposed

  754. to the

  755. lifeless

  756. false gods

  757. of the

  758. Philistines.

  759. We were

  760. reminded this

  761. morning in

  762. Psalm 2,

  763. probably

  764. written by

  765. David,

  766. of how the

  767. nations stand

  768. and defines

  769. against God

  770. and his

  771. king.

  772. In words

  773. that I can

  774. only think

  775. of set to

  776. Handel's

  777. music,

  778. why do the

  779. nations so

  780. furiously rage

  781. together?

  782. Why do the

  783. peoples imagine

  784. a vain thing?

  785. We shall

  786. break their

  787. bonds,

  788. asunder.

  789. So David

  790. sees that

  791. this Philistine

  792. is defying

  793. God and

  794. his people

  795. and no

  796. one is

  797. doing

  798. anything

  799. about it.

  800. He sees

  801. that despite

  802. the promised

  803. rewards,

  804. and they

  805. seem quite

  806. impressive

  807. rewards,

  808. no one

  809. else is

  810. willing to

  811. do anything.

  812. And so he

  813. steps forward,

  814. confident,

  815. humble.

  816. His confidence

  817. comes not

  818. from himself,

  819. from his

  820. own skill,

  821. but from

  822. what he

  823. knows about

  824. God.

  825. And this is

  826. not just what

  827. he's learned

  828. about God,

  829. but this is

  830. what he has

  831. experienced,

  832. how he has

  833. experienced God's

  834. help in the

  835. struggles of his

  836. day-to-day life,

  837. albeit slightly

  838. more dramatic

  839. struggles than

  840. most of us

  841. have on a

  842. daily basis.

  843. I'm not sure

  844. how many of you

  845. expect to be

  846. wrestling bears

  847. and lions this

  848. week.

  849. But he

  850. tells Saul

  851. of his

  852. experiences

  853. looking after

  854. the sheep,

  855. and he

  856. concludes,

  857. the Lord

  858. who rescued

  859. me from

  860. the paw

  861. of the

  862. lion and

  863. the paw

  864. of the

  865. bear will

  866. rescue me

  867. from the

  868. hand of

  869. this

  870. Philistine.

  871. To him,

  872. someone who

  873. defies the

  874. living God

  875. is no

  876. different than

  877. the lion or

  878. a bear,

  879. just someone

  880. that God

  881. will help

  882. him to

  883. fight against.

  884. Saul

  885. offers him

  886. his armor,

  887. and he

  888. does try

  889. it on,

  890. but ultimately

  891. rejects it.

  892. He's not

  893. going to

  894. pretend to

  895. be what

  896. he's not.

  897. He's not

  898. a trained

  899. warrior.

  900. He knows

  901. he isn't

  902. a champion.

  903. He isn't

  904. a hero.

  905. Instead,

  906. he goes out

  907. as he is.

  908. A mere

  909. shepherd boy,

  910. armed with

  911. just a

  912. sling and

  913. five stones.

  914. Oh,

  915. I'm with

  916. the Lord

  917. of Heaven's

  918. armies by

  919. his side.

  920. I wonder

  921. how often

  922. we look at

  923. the challenges

  924. before us

  925. and think,

  926. you know,

  927. someone should

  928. do something

  929. about that.

  930. Or how

  931. often do

  932. we, like

  933. David,

  934. say,

  935. no one is

  936. doing anything

  937. about that,

  938. and step

  939. forward and

  940. do it

  941. ourselves.

  942. Not because

  943. we think

  944. we're anything

  945. special.

  946. not because

  947. we think

  948. we have

  949. skills and

  950. abilities that

  951. we don't,

  952. but because

  953. we see the

  954. task,

  955. and we

  956. trust that

  957. God will

  958. give us the

  959. strength and

  960. resources that

  961. we need to

  962. do it.

  963. But I wonder

  964. also how

  965. much, like

  966. David, we are

  967. aware of our

  968. reliance on

  969. God in our

  970. day-to-day

  971. life.

  972. Do we

  973. trust him

  974. when we

  975. come to the

  976. big battles

  977. because we

  978. have known

  979. him as help

  980. in the small

  981. challenges?

  982. Or do we

  983. think, yeah,

  984. I can cope

  985. with this,

  986. I can cope

  987. with this,

  988. it's fine.

  989. And then

  990. when the big

  991. challenges do

  992. come, we

  993. don't have that

  994. confidence that

  995. comes from

  996. experience,

  997. and our

  998. faith may be

  999. shaken.

  1000. I don't

  1001. know, I'm

  1002. sometimes a

  1003. bit wary about

  1004. the whole

  1005. asking God

  1006. for a parking

  1007. space type of

  1008. prayer.

  1009. It can

  1010. almost seem

  1011. a bit petty,

  1012. and sometimes

  1013. we have to

  1014. accept that

  1015. God is not

  1016. a genie

  1017. there to do

  1018. our bidding,

  1019. but that

  1020. actually he is

  1021. shaping us

  1022. to his will,

  1023. and his will

  1024. today might

  1025. be, that

  1026. you're going

  1027. to park

  1028. ten minutes

  1029. away and

  1030. walk from

  1031. there.

  1032. But are

  1033. we going

  1034. into business

  1035. meetings where

  1036. we know we

  1037. have a tendency

  1038. to be cynical,

  1039. asking for

  1040. God's help,

  1041. to be open

  1042. minded, to

  1043. contribute

  1044. positively?

  1045. Are we going

  1046. into situations

  1047. where we know

  1048. we will face

  1049. temptation,

  1050. asking God

  1051. to make his

  1052. son look so

  1053. glorious in

  1054. our eyes,

  1055. that our

  1056. hearts want

  1057. nothing more?

  1058. But also

  1059. there's often,

  1060. I think,

  1061. the perception

  1062. that to be

  1063. used by God

  1064. we have to

  1065. be some

  1066. special sort

  1067. of person.

  1068. I remember

  1069. back when

  1070. Tim was

  1071. applying to

  1072. go to the

  1073. Faith Mission

  1074. College,

  1075. and I had to

  1076. fill out a

  1077. reference for

  1078. him.

  1079. If anyone

  1080. has been

  1081. through that

  1082. process,

  1083. it is

  1084. horrific.

  1085. It basically

  1086. requires complete

  1087. character

  1088. assassination as

  1089. it quizzes you

  1090. on all their

  1091. weaknesses.

  1092. But the last

  1093. question is the

  1094. one that I

  1095. remember.

  1096. Do you think

  1097. this person is

  1098. suitable for

  1099. Christian service?

  1100. Not quite sure

  1101. what answer they

  1102. were looking for,

  1103. but my answer

  1104. was that from

  1105. the beginning

  1106. God has

  1107. used weak,

  1108. broken people

  1109. to do his

  1110. work.

  1111. That there are

  1112. two qualifications

  1113. for Christian

  1114. service,

  1115. being a

  1116. Christian and

  1117. being willing.

  1118. And, in

  1119. fact, it's not

  1120. even an option.

  1121. It's a requirement

  1122. of all Christians,

  1123. although it takes

  1124. many different

  1125. shapes and forms.

  1126. people

  1127. to do

  1128. things.

  1129. So, are we

  1130. looking for

  1131. special people

  1132. to do things?

  1133. Or are we

  1134. expecting God

  1135. to use us?

  1136. And how often

  1137. do we think

  1138. that we'll be able

  1139. to do something

  1140. for God

  1141. once we have

  1142. the right

  1143. armor,

  1144. the right

  1145. equipment,

  1146. the right

  1147. resources,

  1148. the right

  1149. training?

  1150. once we've

  1151. got all

  1152. these things,

  1153. and they

  1154. are good

  1155. things,

  1156. then we

  1157. can serve

  1158. God.

  1159. Or how

  1160. often do we

  1161. just say

  1162. we go in

  1163. faith,

  1164. our own

  1165. great

  1166. weakness

  1167. feeling,

  1168. not pretending

  1169. to be any

  1170. more than

  1171. we are,

  1172. and not

  1173. relying on

  1174. our ability,

  1175. but relying

  1176. on God.

  1177. whatever

  1178. the situation

  1179. you're called

  1180. into,

  1181. whether it's

  1182. to be

  1183. a hero

  1184. to your

  1185. child who

  1186. skinned

  1187. her knee,

  1188. or to get

  1189. alongside your

  1190. brother or

  1191. sister who's

  1192. really struggling,

  1193. or to invite

  1194. your colleague

  1195. to the Life

  1196. Explored course,

  1197. or maybe

  1198. you are

  1199. called into

  1200. global politics.

  1201. Maybe,

  1202. as Delirious

  1203. sang all those

  1204. years ago,

  1205. for those of

  1206. you that can

  1207. actually still

  1208. remember Delirious,

  1209. maybe you

  1210. are called

  1211. to be a

  1212. history maker

  1213. in this

  1214. land,

  1215. a speaker

  1216. of truth

  1217. to all

  1218. mankind.

  1219. But then

  1220. in the next

  1221. verses,

  1222. verses 41

  1223. to 47,

  1224. we see an

  1225. unlikely

  1226. and frankly

  1227. ridiculous

  1228. scene.

  1229. A huge,

  1230. heavily armed

  1231. warrior.

  1232. and a

  1233. boy

  1234. with a

  1235. sling

  1236. approaching

  1237. each other

  1238. across the

  1239. battlefield.

  1240. And Goliath

  1241. takes this

  1242. as an

  1243. insult.

  1244. He

  1245. understands

  1246. strength.

  1247. He

  1248. understands

  1249. war.

  1250. He has

  1251. no time

  1252. for weakness.

  1253. And they've

  1254. sent a

  1255. boy.

  1256. He

  1257. curses

  1258. David in

  1259. the names

  1260. of his

  1261. Philistine

  1262. gods and

  1263. shouts a

  1264. defiant

  1265. challenge.

  1266. come

  1267. closer

  1268. and I'll

  1269. kill you.

  1270. He assumes

  1271. that the

  1272. outcome of

  1273. this fight

  1274. is a

  1275. mere

  1276. formality.

  1277. But David,

  1278. however,

  1279. has a

  1280. slightly

  1281. different view

  1282. of the

  1283. situation.

  1284. He sees

  1285. the apparent

  1286. mismatch,

  1287. but he

  1288. knows that

  1289. he's not

  1290. the one

  1291. that should

  1292. be afraid

  1293. and shouts

  1294. back his

  1295. own challenge.

  1296. some of

  1297. this seems

  1298. to be just

  1299. out of

  1300. standard

  1301. military

  1302. taunting.

  1303. Goliath has

  1304. said he'll

  1305. give David's

  1306. flesh to

  1307. the birds

  1308. and wild

  1309. animals.

  1310. David

  1311. trumps

  1312. this by

  1313. saying he'll

  1314. give the

  1315. carcasses of

  1316. the whole

  1317. Philistine

  1318. army to

  1319. the birds

  1320. and animals.

  1321. But his

  1322. challenge is

  1323. not just

  1324. bravado.

  1325. Because his

  1326. challenge is

  1327. based on his

  1328. understanding of

  1329. who God

  1330. is.

  1331. he calls

  1332. him the

  1333. Lord

  1334. Almighty.

  1335. Sometimes

  1336. translated the

  1337. Lord of

  1338. hosts, or

  1339. as we

  1340. sang the

  1341. God of

  1342. angel

  1343. armies.

  1344. The

  1345. God of

  1346. the armies

  1347. of Israel

  1348. whom you

  1349. have defied.

  1350. He knows

  1351. that the

  1352. God Goliath

  1353. has set

  1354. himself up

  1355. against is

  1356. no mere

  1357. distant

  1358. deity.

  1359. Nor is

  1360. he just a

  1361. personal

  1362. God.

  1363. He is an

  1364. awesome

  1365. God who

  1366. is here.

  1367. He's not

  1368. distant from

  1369. his creation,

  1370. but he's at

  1371. work throughout

  1372. it and

  1373. still totally

  1374. other.

  1375. But his

  1376. challenge is

  1377. also based on

  1378. his trust in

  1379. God.

  1380. Because he

  1381. says he

  1382. will deliver

  1383. you into

  1384. my hands.

  1385. He's not

  1386. relying on his

  1387. strength or

  1388. his skill,

  1389. but in

  1390. God

  1391. fighting for

  1392. him.

  1393. And this

  1394. is not just

  1395. because of

  1396. his inexperience

  1397. and weakness,

  1398. the fact that

  1399. as far as

  1400. we're aware

  1401. he's never

  1402. fought a

  1403. battle before.

  1404. Because as

  1405. we read of

  1406. many battles

  1407. afterwards,

  1408. even once

  1409. he's an

  1410. experienced

  1411. warrior,

  1412. his trust

  1413. in God,

  1414. not his

  1415. own strength

  1416. remains.

  1417. He writes

  1418. in Psalm

  1419. 19,

  1420. some

  1421. trust in

  1422. chariots

  1423. and some

  1424. in horses,

  1425. but we

  1426. trust in

  1427. the name

  1428. of the

  1429. Lord our

  1430. God.

  1431. This morning

  1432. we were

  1433. reminded by

  1434. Scott Hamilton

  1435. telling us

  1436. about the

  1437. work of

  1438. UCCF,

  1439. that they

  1440. could put

  1441. on all

  1442. the slickest

  1443. presentations.

  1444. They could

  1445. have the

  1446. best speakers,

  1447. they could

  1448. do everything

  1449. really,

  1450. really well.

  1451. And if

  1452. God wasn't

  1453. in it,

  1454. they were

  1455. wasting their

  1456. time.

  1457. But lastly,

  1458. his challenge

  1459. is for

  1460. God's

  1461. glory.

  1462. He doesn't

  1463. care about

  1464. his own

  1465. reputation,

  1466. whether he

  1467. comes out

  1468. of this

  1469. looking good.

  1470. Instead,

  1471. he fights

  1472. so that

  1473. the whole

  1474. world will

  1475. know that

  1476. there is a

  1477. God in

  1478. Israel.

  1479. He carries

  1480. on,

  1481. the battle

  1482. belongs to

  1483. the Lord.

  1484. God

  1485. because

  1486. it is

  1487. God who

  1488. will give

  1489. the victory

  1490. and it

  1491. is God

  1492. who will

  1493. get the

  1494. glory.

  1495. And then

  1496. we come to

  1497. the account

  1498. of the

  1499. fight itself

  1500. and

  1501. it's

  1502. in verses

  1503. 48 to

  1504. 51,

  1505. it's

  1506. very short.

  1507. It only

  1508. takes three

  1509. and a half

  1510. verses.

  1511. he hits

  1512. Goliath

  1513. on the

  1514. forehead

  1515. with one

  1516. stone,

  1517. sinks into

  1518. his forehead,

  1519. kills him,

  1520. he then

  1521. runs up,

  1522. cuts off

  1523. Goliath's

  1524. head with

  1525. Goliath's

  1526. own sword,

  1527. done.

  1528. There's

  1529. little more

  1530. to be said

  1531. about it

  1532. than that.

  1533. It really

  1534. seems

  1535. anticlimactic.

  1536. you're

  1537. expecting

  1538. some

  1539. description

  1540. of a

  1541. titanic

  1542. struggle

  1543. here

  1544. where

  1545. despite

  1546. the

  1547. crushing

  1548. odds

  1549. David

  1550. eventually

  1551. subdues

  1552. his opponent

  1553. and crawls

  1554. out wounded

  1555. but victorious.

  1556. Nope,

  1557. nothing like

  1558. that here.

  1559. Despite

  1560. outward

  1561. appearances,

  1562. the odds

  1563. were so

  1564. heavily

  1565. stacked

  1566. in David's

  1567. favour

  1568. that there's

  1569. little to

  1570. comment on.

  1571. In fact,

  1572. to call it

  1573. a fight

  1574. is really

  1575. stretching

  1576. things.

  1577. And the

  1578. remainder of

  1579. this chapter

  1580. is just

  1581. the aftermath.

  1582. Having seen

  1583. the Philistine

  1584. champion

  1585. defeated,

  1586. the tables

  1587. are turned.

  1588. It's now the

  1589. Philistines

  1590. who are running

  1591. in fear

  1592. and the

  1593. Israelites,

  1594. having seen

  1595. God at work,

  1596. have the

  1597. confidence to

  1598. chase him

  1599. down.

  1600. But

  1601. I don't

  1602. know,

  1603. as I

  1604. come to

  1605. this,

  1606. particularly

  1607. as I

  1608. read of

  1609. this

  1610. ridiculously

  1611. short

  1612. fight,

  1613. I can't

  1614. help

  1615. thinking

  1616. of another

  1617. champion.

  1618. A champion

  1619. who also

  1620. looked like

  1621. nothing special.

  1622. David is at

  1623. least described

  1624. here as

  1625. handsome,

  1626. but this

  1627. champion

  1628. had no

  1629. beauty

  1630. or majesty

  1631. to attract

  1632. us to

  1633. him.

  1634. Nothing

  1635. in his

  1636. appearance

  1637. that we

  1638. should

  1639. desire

  1640. him.

  1641. He was

  1642. a champion

  1643. who,

  1644. when taunted

  1645. by his

  1646. adversary,

  1647. could say,

  1648. it is

  1649. written,

  1650. worship the

  1651. Lord your

  1652. God and

  1653. serve him

  1654. only.

  1655. A champion

  1656. that,

  1657. as he

  1658. approached

  1659. the battlefield

  1660. where everything

  1661. seemed stacked

  1662. against him,

  1663. could say to

  1664. his father,

  1665. not my

  1666. will,

  1667. but yours

  1668. be done.

  1669. A champion

  1670. whose greatest

  1671. victory

  1672. was won

  1673. when it

  1674. seemed like

  1675. his enemies.

  1676. All the

  1677. powers of

  1678. darkness

  1679. and death

  1680. itself

  1681. were invincible

  1682. and yet he

  1683. could cry

  1684. out,

  1685. it is

  1686. finished.

  1687. But a

  1688. champion

  1689. who promised

  1690. he would be

  1691. with us

  1692. always,

  1693. even to

  1694. the end

  1695. of the

  1696. age.

  1697. A champion

  1698. that promised

  1699. a comforter

  1700. to walk

  1701. beside us,

  1702. to walk

  1703. with us

  1704. through life,

  1705. to give us

  1706. the power

  1707. to face

  1708. up to

  1709. these

  1710. challenges

  1711. that we

  1712. see in

  1713. the world

  1714. around us,

  1715. that we

  1716. are unable

  1717. to meet

  1718. with our

  1719. own

  1720. strength.

  1721. But a

  1722. champion

  1723. that will

  1724. not leave

  1725. us fighting

  1726. running

  1727. battles

  1728. forever.

  1729. A champion

  1730. who will

  1731. himself

  1732. come onto

  1733. the battlefield

  1734. at the

  1735. end of

  1736. the age.

  1737. If we

  1738. thought the

  1739. description

  1740. of the

  1741. battle

  1742. here

  1743. was an

  1744. anticlimax,

  1745. try reading

  1746. Revelation

  1747. 19.

  1748. There we

  1749. see our

  1750. champion

  1751. on a

  1752. white

  1753. horse.

  1754. He has

  1755. the names

  1756. faithful and

  1757. true,

  1758. and king

  1759. of kings,

  1760. and lord

  1761. of lords.

  1762. And armies

  1763. are massed

  1764. against him,

  1765. led by the

  1766. beast and

  1767. false prophet.

  1768. The kings

  1769. of the

  1770. earth are

  1771. furiously

  1772. raging

  1773. against him.

  1774. And then

  1775. instead of

  1776. an epic

  1777. battle,

  1778. the beast

  1779. and false

  1780. prophet are

  1781. captured,

  1782. and the

  1783. rest are

  1784. killed by

  1785. the sword

  1786. that came

  1787. out of

  1788. the mouth

  1789. of the

  1790. rider

  1791. on the

  1792. white

  1793. horse.

  1794. Just like

  1795. that,

  1796. no fuss.

  1797. We talk

  1798. about Armageddon

  1799. as if it's

  1800. an epic

  1801. battle of

  1802. good against

  1803. evil.

  1804. evil.

  1805. It isn't.

  1806. It's plain,

  1807. straightforward

  1808. defeat.

  1809. The powers

  1810. of evil

  1811. don't stand

  1812. a chance.

  1813. And the

  1814. powers of

  1815. evil will

  1816. be defeated.

  1817. All the

  1818. wrongs in

  1819. this world

  1820. that we've

  1821. thought about,

  1822. and many

  1823. others,

  1824. will be

  1825. put right.

  1826. We have

  1827. a champion

  1828. who will

  1829. wipe every

  1830. tear from

  1831. our eye.

  1832. And in

  1833. the meantime,

  1834. he is

  1835. with us

  1836. as we go

  1837. into the

  1838. battle

  1839. tomorrow

  1840. and the

  1841. next day

  1842. until he

  1843. comes.

  1844. Just want

  1845. to finish

  1846. with words

  1847. of verse

  1848. of a song.

  1849. I can

  1850. see the

  1851. son of

  1852. man

  1853. descending,

  1854. and the

  1855. sword he

  1856. swings is

  1857. brighter than

  1858. the dawn.

  1859. And the

  1860. gates of

  1861. hell will

  1862. never stand

  1863. against him.

  1864. So, in

  1865. the night,

  1866. my hope

  1867. lives on.

  1868. Amen.
