  1. Well, good morning, everyone. Good morning. Are we well? Good to see you today.

  2. If you've got your Bibles, turn back to Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  3. This is where we're going to be this morning, or this afternoon, rather.

  4. And to these verses in Colossians chapter 3 that...

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  5. Let me just whet your appetite for today. We're just going to call it today.

  6. So much to teach us about what a church that brings glory to Jesus Christ

  7. what it looks like.

  8. What it looks like.

  9. So much to teach us this morning, and we need God's help.

  10. So why don't we still our hearts and let's pray together.

  11. John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  12. So Jesus said to the twelve,

  13. You don't want to go away too, do you?

  14. Simon Peter answered,

  15. Lord, to whom will we go?

  16. You have the words of eternal life.

  17. And we have come to believe and know

  18. that You are the Holy One of God.

  19. And so, Heavenly Father, it's our prayer this morning

  20. that You would help us fix our eyes on the Lord Jesus,

  21. who has and is the word of eternal life.

  22. Help us by Your Spirit, we ask in Jesus' precious name.

  23. Amen.

  24. Well, to get us back into Paul's logic,

  25. the logic that we've seen over the past few weeks,

  26. let me introduce you to Irene Ritchie.

  27. Anyone met Irene Ritchie before?

  28. Anyone's met Irene Ritchie before?

  29. I was wondering, there's like 1% of your brain that thinks,

  30. what if Irene Ritchie is here?

  31. But she's not here.

  32. So there she is.

  33. She's a nurse who lives in Broxburn in West Lothian.

  34. And in 2005, she was named the Scottish Slimmer of the Year.

  35. Irene Ritchie.

  36. Because she lost an incredible nine stone.

  37. And she dropped from a size 30 to a size 12.

  38. Now, I'm not going to stand here and pretend I know what that means, right?

  39. I'm a guy, and the fashion industry seems to think that we can only think in letters.

  40. We've got S, we've got M, and we've got L.

  41. That's what?

  42. XL.

  43. There's two.

  44. But she has dropped from a size 30 to a size 12.

  45. And I understand from speaking to a few people, but that's quite good going.

  46. This is Irene Ritchie.

  47. Here's what I want you to imagine as we begin our time together in Colossians,

  48. that you walk out the doors at the end of today,

  49. and you walk up the street and you go to the links.

  50. And on the links, you see Irene Ritchie.

  51. And you see her, but she's looking pretty odd.

  52. And what's odd about Irene is that she's still wearing her size 30 clothes.

  53. Picture that on your heads.

  54. So she's got her belt on the last buckle, trying to hold up her baggy jeans.

  55. She's wearing a t-shirt like it's a duvet cover.

  56. And frankly, she just looks ridiculous.

  57. Now, here's what I want to ask you.

  58. What would you say to her?

  59. What would you say to her?

  60. You would say, come on, Irene.

  61. New you, new clothes, wouldn't you?

  62. New you, new clothes.

  63. And that's exactly been, that's been Paul's logic when it comes to the Christian.

  64. If you remember verses 1 to 4, Paul has said, new you, hasn't he?

  65. New you.

  66. New you.

  67. Jesus Christ, verses 1 to 4, has claimed you for himself.

  68. You are his.

  69. This is what he's been saying.

  70. He's dealt with all your sin on the cross.

  71. Your life is hid in him as he sits at the right hand of the Father.

  72. And one day you will gloriously appear with him when he appears and returns in glory.

  73. Your life, verses 1 to 4, Christian, has been a total transformation.

  74. Because you're Christ's.

  75. You are in Christ.

  76. It's Paul's favourite description for the life of the Christian.

  77. You should see it all the way through his letters.

  78. It occurs more than 100 times.

  79. In Christ.

  80. The old you has been crucified with Christ.

  81. And the new you has been raised with him.

  82. And Christ is your life.

  83. That's what he's declared.

  84. Doesn't get much more total than that, does it?

  85. But Christ is your life.

  86. New you.

  87. And because of that, verse 9, follow his logic.

  88. He says, put off the clothes.

  89. The behaviour that went with the old you.

  90. Get rid of the clothes.

  91. And verse 10.

  92. Put on the clothes that go with the new you.

  93. The one saved by and raised with Jesus Christ.

  94. And the one so important for us to see, verse 10.

  95. The one that's being renewed in the image of its creator.

  96. And so here's the subtle shift that goes on in our verses today.

  97. You see, God hasn't just saved individual persons to himself.

  98. He's called out a people for his own possession.

  99. A people for his own possession.

  100. In these verses, you'll see Paul's corporate focus all the way through this little section.

  101. And it's indicated by that phrase, look for it, one another.

  102. Do you see it?

  103. One another.

  104. One another.

  105. All the you's in there are plural.

  106. So he's talking to the church.

  107. And he wants them to be a Christ-like counter-cultural community who together are putting off the old and are putting on the new.

  108. Here's his vision for this church.

  109. This church.

  110. And I think as we eavesdrop in here, if you like, on what he's saying, we're going to find a wonderful vision for our church community.

  111. Wonderful vision for what we are to be.

  112. As Jesus calls us to be, that city in the hill.

  113. The community of salt and light that makes him glorious to the world.

  114. He's a wonderful vision for our church community.

  115. And I think what we see here is that these words are both wonderfully inspiring and beautifully realistic.

  116. Beautifully realistic.

  117. Because Paul hits two paradoxical truths about God's people.

  118. Ready for these?

  119. Verse 12.

  120. Here's the first one.

  121. What are they, their saints?

  122. They are God's chosen ones.

  123. Follow the description, verse 12.

  124. And if you're a Christian here this morning, then these truths are gloriously yours.

  125. They are God's chosen ones.

  126. Do you see it?

  127. They are called to be holy.

  128. They are set apart to live for him.

  129. They're his.

  130. And they're dearly loved.

  131. Dearly loved.

  132. And what he's done is he's taken Old Testament terms that God had used in the Old Testament to refer to Israel.

  133. And he's transferred them and said they're applicable for this little church in Colossae.

  134. That's what you are, he's saying to them.

  135. That's what you are.

  136. That's what God thinks of you.

  137. Not because of who you are, but because of who you are in Christ.

  138. And as amazing as that is, what's just as amazing is what he has made you corporately.

  139. Verse 15.

  140. Do you see?

  141. He's made you one body.

  142. One body.

  143. Verse 11.

  144. Those earthly barriers that should, in one way or another, deeply divide you.

  145. Do you see them?

  146. Your background, your social standing, your religious tradition.

  147. Well, God has brought you together to form one body.

  148. One body.

  149. Friends, the church is an amazing thing.

  150. And if you don't believe me, look around you.

  151. Look around you.

  152. The world looks on at this motley crew and it declares weird.

  153. Right?

  154. Let's be honest.

  155. It's strange.

  156. How has this happened?

  157. This is weird.

  158. Why would they come together on a Sunday morning and sing and read the book?

  159. This is weird.

  160. This is weird.

  161. But God looks on and says to the world, you say weird.

  162. I see wisdom.

  163. I declare my wisdom.

  164. Something that the angels in heaven look on and exclaim in glorious wonder as we meet here together this morning.

  165. How has God done that?

  166. How has he done that?

  167. Bringing people together from different parts of the world, doing different jobs from different backgrounds, male and female.

  168. And he's brought them together as one.

  169. How has he done that?

  170. And of course the answer is he's done it gloriously through the cross of Jesus Christ.

  171. I was chatting on the phone last week with a guy called Lefraz.

  172. Lefraz works down in London and he's developing an evangelistic resource called the Word One to One.

  173. He was just asking me what I thought about it.

  174. Now I've never seen the guy and I've never spoken to the guy before.

  175. He's South African.

  176. I'm Scottish.

  177. So we're on the phone.

  178. We're sharing some ideas.

  179. We're joking and laughing away.

  180. He's inviting me down to his in London for a braai.

  181. That's what a braai is.

  182. It's an African barbecue.

  183. He's inviting me down for a braai.

  184. I'm inviting.

  185. I'm up here for some haggis and iron brew.

  186. Let's get some sheep intestine and some orange stuff into you.

  187. We know how to treat our visitors in Scotland, don't we?

  188. We're laughing and joking away.

  189. And then do you know what we did?

  190. We just prayed together.

  191. Never met this guy before.

  192. Never even spoken to this guy before.

  193. Let me pray together.

  194. And he signed off.

  195. He said, thank you so much for your time, dear brother.

  196. Friends, the church is an amazing thing.

  197. The thing that God has done in birthing the church, friends,

  198. it should never cease to blow our minds.

  199. We are saints.

  200. We are his.

  201. It is absolutely incredible.

  202. And the second thing about the church,

  203. we are saints, but we are sinners.

  204. What does he write in verse 13?

  205. Bear with one another.

  206. See, it's straight off the bat.

  207. You're dearly loved.

  208. A few words later, bear with one another.

  209. Forgive one another.

  210. Now, here's my question.

  211. I asked you, I was reading it this week.

  212. Why would he need to write that?

  213. Would it not be simply because he anticipates that because of the lingering sin

  214. in all of their hearts, the battle that they're in to put off the old and put off the new,

  215. that inevitably at times they're going to rub each other up the wrong way?

  216. The church is saints and sinners.

  217. But the church,

  218. this context, the local church,

  219. is the place that God in his wisdom has put in place for you and I to grow alongside one another in the Christian life.

  220. Let me just speak pastorally here for a minute.

  221. I do worry for some of you

  222. who are settling for what I would deem, I would call a hokey-cokey Christian life, right?

  223. You're in, you're out, you're in and out and you don't even stay long enough to shake it all about.

  224. You're just playing with this church thing.

  225. And you're robbing yourself of the beauty of being part of God's corporate people.

  226. This is where we'll grow, the local church.

  227. Right here as we live our lives together, as God's brought together body,

  228. this is how we'll visibly show the world the transforming power that the gospel has.

  229. Church in all its messiness,

  230. in all its unslickness,

  231. friends, this is where the action is.

  232. Right here.

  233. This is God's wisdom.

  234. Now let me ask you, I wonder whether you believe that to be true.

  235. Because I wonder whether that's the reason Paul wrote it.

  236. Were these false teachers,

  237. we've seen them all the way through this letter,

  238. were these false teachers in the background with all their talk of their fine-sounding,

  239. mystical, individual religious experiences,

  240. were they looking down their noses at the unglamorous nature of these Colossian Christians' life together?

  241. How on earth could you think that this is where the power of God is?

  242. But Paul says,

  243. as you live your Christian lives,

  244. as this new heavenly community,

  245. you display the power and the wisdom of God

  246. to the watching world.

  247. This is what we want to be,

  248. is it not as Brunsfield,

  249. evangelical church?

  250. Otherwise,

  251. we're just playing at this.

  252. This is what we want to be,

  253. the kind of community that baffles the world.

  254. How on earth has God done that?

  255. And so he says,

  256. isn't he,

  257. verse 12,

  258. you've got the text,

  259. Paul says to them all,

  260. as they live their lives together as one body,

  261. he says,

  262. put on.

  263. So there's our language,

  264. right back to Irene Ritchie,

  265. get off the old clothes,

  266. get on the new clothes,

  267. put on.

  268. Look at these virtues,

  269. compassion,

  270. kindness,

  271. humility,

  272. patience,

  273. what wonderful Christ-like virtues.

  274. And Paul says,

  275. get it on.

  276. Get these virtues on.

  277. And from there he says,

  278. here are four things that I want you to do

  279. as a church community,

  280. as together you pursue Jesus Christ.

  281. Here's the first one,

  282. I want you to make forgiveness normal.

  283. He implores them,

  284. do you feel his heart in this language?

  285. He implores them to work hard,

  286. to be one with one another,

  287. be right with one another.

  288. Look what he writes,

  289. bear with one another.

  290. Do you feel the longevity in that word?

  291. Bear with one another.

  292. In other words,

  293. in your life together,

  294. commit to sticking it out with one another.

  295. Commit to working it out with one another.

  296. And in the text,

  297. do you see how he uses the word forgive three times in quick succession?

  298. Forgive,

  299. forgive,

  300. forgive.

  301. And he draws a direct link between the forgiveness that we have received,

  302. the mercy we have received from God,

  303. and the forgiveness that we extend to others.

  304. And notice the term that Paul uses there all the way through this letter,

  305. when he's been talking about Jesus,

  306. he's used the term Christ.

  307. Christ all the way through this letter.

  308. Now for the first time in the letter,

  309. do you see what term he uses?

  310. Lord.

  311. Not capital L,

  312. capital O,

  313. capital R,

  314. capital D,

  315. the covenant name of God.

  316. Not that one.

  317. L-O-R-D,

  318. Greek word,

  319. kurios,

  320. master.

  321. Master.

  322. So if the master has forgiven you the enormous debt of your sin,

  323. and he's not just forgiven you,

  324. but he's absorbed the penalty of your debt upon himself,

  325. who are you to withhold that same forgiveness from others?

  326. I feel the challenge of what he's saying there.

  327. But oh,

  328. how God is glorified,

  329. and how you and I will grow,

  330. as we practice putting aside our pride and our differences,

  331. and we bear with one another,

  332. and we move towards each other in forgiveness and love,

  333. and how Satan rages,

  334. and how the world stands in shock when a disciple of Jesus decides that bitterness and hurt will not reign in his heart,

  335. Christ will.

  336. Jesus will.

  337. I want a testimony to the transforming power of God at work in the family of God.

  338. Let me ask you,

  339. do you need to act to put,

  340. as he terms it there,

  341. act to put a grievance with somebody right today for the glory of God?

  342. Think about it.

  343. If we are not at peace with one another,

  344. then we are going against the very grain of the oneness that Jesus Christ accomplished for the church on the cross.

  345. You know,

  346. the late John Stott was once asked how he loved the unlovable Christian.

  347. Don't ever ask me that,

  348. okay?

  349. But this is what he was asked.

  350. How do you love the unlovable Christian?

  351. And he simply replied,

  352. I remind myself who they are.

  353. If God the Father chose them,

  354. and God the Son died for them,

  355. and God the Spirit lives in them,

  356. then who am I not to love them?

  357. Now I know,

  358. for many of us,

  359. the very mention of that word forgive is a terrifying prospect.

  360. Some of us will have been hurt and betrayed and scarred in ways that I don't even want to know.

  361. To pretend that I understand.

  362. But maybe this morning,

  363. Jesus would invite you to take his hand,

  364. and to walk with him on the long road towards the destination of forgiveness.

  365. Because in him,

  366. gloriously,

  367. not only do we have one who knows what it's like to be the sinned against party,

  368. but we have one who promises to be to his people,

  369. one who sticks and walks closer than a brother.

  370. Paul says,

  371. make forgiveness normal.

  372. Secondly,

  373. make unity essential.

  374. Verse 14.

  375. See how he opens it?

  376. Above all.

  377. Above all.

  378. Which I take it is his way of saying,

  379. here's the most important thing

  380. that I need you to get for everything that's about to follow.

  381. Above all,

  382. put on love.

  383. Put on love.

  384. Not in a kind of hippie,

  385. green pace,

  386. make love not war kind of way.

  387. He's saying,

  388. love the Lord and love the church.

  389. Love his church.

  390. Love his people.

  391. Love your brothers and sisters.

  392. Love them.

  393. Now,

  394. let me ask you this point.

  395. I've asked myself all week this question.

  396. As you look around here,

  397. friends,

  398. do we love one another?

  399. Do we love one another?

  400. Exactly how Jesus said to the world,

  401. said to his disciples,

  402. that the world will know that we are his disciples

  403. by the way that we love one another.

  404. You know,

  405. a great way for us to practice that this week,

  406. let me give you a little challenge,

  407. is to pray for one another.

  408. Now,

  409. hopefully you got,

  410. as you came in,

  411. you got the sermon note sheet.

  412. Some of you might be scribbling away on that.

  413. You'll notice at the bottom of it,

  414. it says,

  415. my prayer request for this week.

  416. A little perforated strip.

  417. Here's my challenge for you today.

  418. I want you to fill that in.

  419. And you can do two things with it.

  420. First,

  421. one,

  422. you can give it to somebody.

  423. You can swap it with somebody.

  424. Say,

  425. I want you to pray for me this week.

  426. How can I pray for you this week?

  427. And put it in your Bible

  428. and pray for them this week.

  429. And the second thing I'd love you to do

  430. is that there's a box in the foy outside

  431. marked prayer.

  432. If you want to rip that off

  433. and put that in the prayer box there,

  434. on Wednesday night,

  435. when we meet together as a church

  436. for our prayer meeting,

  437. we'll commit to praying for these things

  438. that go in that box.

  439. So that's what we do

  440. when we meet together to pray.

  441. We pray for our world.

  442. We pray for our city.

  443. We pray for our fellow brothers and sisters

  444. in this city.

  445. And then we pray for ourselves.

  446. Not just the stuff that we do,

  447. but way more importantly,

  448. the people that we are.

  449. So we'll commit together on Wednesday night.

  450. Please come along if you're free.

  451. It's a wonderful thing

  452. that expresses our unity together

  453. when we meet together to pray.

  454. But if you can't make it,

  455. put something in that box

  456. and we'll endeavor to pray for it

  457. on Wednesday evening.

  458. This is just a practical way

  459. that we can love one another,

  460. isn't it?

  461. That we pray for one another.

  462. Because Paul says,

  463. if you put on love,

  464. it will bind you together.

  465. Do you see it?

  466. It will bind you together.

  467. Now if you were watching

  468. the rugby yesterday,

  469. you'll know that's how they set up

  470. for the scrum, isn't it?

  471. One thing to test our unity

  472. is we realize that every single nation

  473. in the six nations

  474. is represented in this church body.

  475. A great way to represent

  476. our unity to the world

  477. that doesn't affect us.

  478. But what do they do?

  479. They get together in the scrum

  480. and they bind together.

  481. That's what they used to shout to us

  482. when we were playing it

  483. when we were young.

  484. Bind.

  485. Bind.

  486. And the forwards

  487. have the cauliflower ears,

  488. don't they,

  489. to prove just how tightly

  490. they are bound together.

  491. This is what he's saying.

  492. Love will bind you together.

  493. That's Paul's heart for this church.

  494. That God would work among them

  495. in such a way

  496. that they would be inseparably

  497. and lovingly one.

  498. Do you remember that chorus

  499. we used to sing sometimes

  500. when we were young?

  501. Bind us together, Lord.

  502. Bind us together

  503. with cords that cannot be broken.

  504. Bind us together, Lord.

  505. Bind us together.

  506. Bind us together in love.

  507. And let the peace of Christ

  508. rule in your hearts.

  509. What a wonderful picture, isn't it,

  510. of the peace that we enjoy

  511. with God our Father through Christ

  512. spilling over to the peace,

  513. that oneness that we have

  514. with one another.

  515. You know the word rule there

  516. is the word for umpire.

  517. Loved that thought this week.

  518. It's the word for umpire.

  519. The person whose job it is

  520. to say whether something

  521. is in or out.

  522. My imagination has great fun

  523. this week trying to picture

  524. the peace of Christ

  525. as a referee

  526. running around the pitch

  527. brandishing yellow cards,

  528. calling for VAR.

  529. But do you see what he's saying?

  530. Let the peace of Christ

  531. be your umpire.

  532. Is what you're doing

  533. or saying,

  534. is it enhancing

  535. or is it jeopardizing

  536. the oneness of the body?

  537. Would that word

  538. that came out of your mouth,

  539. would it see you sent

  540. to the sin bin?

  541. This is what he's saying.

  542. Would that deeds,

  543. if Hawkeye were to come on it,

  544. would that be in or out?

  545. So true, isn't it?

  546. I know this in my own life.

  547. We can get lazy

  548. with our own words

  549. and thoughts about others.

  550. So much so that loose threads

  551. begin to emerge

  552. in our relationships

  553. with one another

  554. and it endangers our unity.

  555. And the call here

  556. to the church

  557. is to work so hard

  558. to let the peace of Christ reign.

  559. Don Carson writes this,

  560. we will see profound

  561. spiritual renovation

  562. if by God's grace

  563. we make it our commitment

  564. not to put anyone down

  565. except on our prayer list.

  566. Make unity essential.

  567. Thirdly, make the Bible central.

  568. Make the Bible central.

  569. I remember hearing a speaker

  570. a few years ago,

  571. he began his talk

  572. by asking us the question,

  573. what do you need most

  574. in your life right now?

  575. And I think I was,

  576. we had a newborn at the time

  577. so caffeine was my first thought

  578. but the answer he was getting at

  579. in typical Sunday school style

  580. was Jesus.

  581. What you need most

  582. in your life right now

  583. is Jesus.

  584. So true.

  585. It's exactly what Paul says

  586. in verse 16.

  587. The thing that the people of God

  588. most desperately need,

  589. what you and I

  590. most here today

  591. most desperately need

  592. is what Paul calls here

  593. the word of Christ.

  594. The word of Christ.

  595. Probably most simply translated

  596. as the words about Christ.

  597. Who he is,

  598. what he's done,

  599. what he's doing,

  600. what he will do

  601. and who you are,

  602. who we are in him.

  603. The message,

  604. that message,

  605. Paul says,

  606. let that dwell in you richly.

  607. Do you see that word?

  608. Wonderful word.

  609. Not blandly,

  610. richly.

  611. I remember one university summer

  612. I worked for a few weeks

  613. with a guy down the road

  614. who was a joiner.

  615. So I worked for a few weeks

  616. as a joiner's apprentice.

  617. And we're working with big units

  618. and because there was so much dust

  619. sometimes my asthma would flare up.

  620. And what happened

  621. at the end of the day

  622. is the guy,

  623. my neighbour,

  624. used to take me home

  625. and he used to give me

  626. what's called in Scotland

  627. a hot toddy.

  628. This is what he used to give me,

  629. a hot toddy.

  630. And basically,

  631. if you don't know what that is,

  632. it's a small bit of whiskey

  633. mixed with honey

  634. and it's warmed up.

  635. This is what he used to give me

  636. to clear my asthma.

  637. But I remember

  638. every day when I came home

  639. struggling with my asthma,

  640. I remember he,

  641. I used to take it

  642. and I could feel it

  643. going down my throat,

  644. warming my throat

  645. and it got to my stomach

  646. and I could feel it

  647. warming my stomach

  648. and I just sat there

  649. and just enjoyed the moment.

  650. This is what he's saying,

  651. isn't it?

  652. Let the word of Christ

  653. dwell in you richly.

  654. This is what he's saying.

  655. In your life,

  656. swim richly

  657. in the life-giving words

  658. of Christ

  659. and allow its truth

  660. to bring deep

  661. and satisfying nourishment

  662. for your souls.

  663. Friends,

  664. if you are here today

  665. and you're feeling

  666. weighed down by guilt,

  667. what you most need

  668. is not to feel better

  669. about yourself.

  670. What you most need

  671. is to know

  672. the forgiveness

  673. that's yours

  674. in Jesus Christ.

  675. if you're here today

  676. and you're feeling

  677. like throwing in the towel

  678. to this Christian life,

  679. you need to know

  680. that in Jesus Christ

  681. you have something

  682. far more glorious

  683. than the world

  684. could possibly offer you.

  685. If you're here today

  686. and deep down in your soul

  687. you think to yourself,

  688. how could anybody

  689. possibly love me?

  690. The very next song

  691. we'll sing will be

  692. how deep

  693. the Father's love for us,

  694. how vast beyond all measure

  695. that he should give

  696. his only son

  697. to make a wretch

  698. his treasure.

  699. Look to the cross.

  700. The word of Christ.

  701. Paul says,

  702. devote yourself to it,

  703. listen to it,

  704. speak it to one another,

  705. get it inside you.

  706. Teaching and admonishing,

  707. bringing it to bear

  708. in each other's lives

  709. as you correct,

  710. you instruct

  711. and you encourage.

  712. You know,

  713. I've got a good friend

  714. called Andy.

  715. A dear, dear friend.

  716. I'm so thankful

  717. to the Lord for Andy.

  718. Just quite often

  719. he just texts me

  720. Bible verses.

  721. That's what he does.

  722. Just text me

  723. Bible verses.

  724. Remember I got one

  725. recently from him.

  726. It simply read

  727. Ephesians 2, 8 to 10.

  728. You can check that out

  729. afterwards.

  730. Ephesians 2, 8 to 10.

  731. That God has got good works

  732. for us to walk in.

  733. That's the verse.

  734. And every time he does that,

  735. I know it's code for,

  736. I read this this morning,

  737. I've been praying for you

  738. and I trust and pray

  739. that that's true for you

  740. in your own life today.

  741. Great, isn't it?

  742. Good friends.

  743. It's such a blessing

  744. from God.

  745. But it's a wonderful way

  746. that we can encourage

  747. one another

  748. with the word of Christ.

  749. Allow it to dwell

  750. richly in us.

  751. And you know,

  752. another way,

  753. great way to do that

  754. is as we come together

  755. on a Sunday

  756. during the week,

  757. whenever it is,

  758. it's singing.

  759. Do you see what it's

  760. right in there?

  761. Singing.

  762. Singing the word of Christ.

  763. Psalms.

  764. Now I've spent

  765. five years studying

  766. with dear Presbyterian

  767. brothers and sisters

  768. at the Free Church College

  769. who are well into Psalms.

  770. and they'll tell you

  771. that they're devoted

  772. to Psalms singing

  773. because it's so,

  774. it does something

  775. so beautiful

  776. for their soul

  777. when they sing

  778. this inspired hymn book

  779. that God has given us

  780. which tells us

  781. the depths of human experience

  782. and the towering heights

  783. of the truths

  784. of who God is.

  785. And it's a blessing

  786. for their soul

  787. to sing it.

  788. And do you know what?

  789. And I know this has been recorded.

  790. I totally get it.

  791. Totally get it.

  792. Singing the word of Christ.

  793. Allowing it to dwell in us.

  794. Singing Psalms.

  795. Singing hymns.

  796. And singing spiritual songs.

  797. And the truth is, isn't it,

  798. in the hardest times in life

  799. we need the word of Christ.

  800. We need the word of Christ.

  801. You know, we had a funeral

  802. in here on Thursday.

  803. A dear saint called Jenny Oliver,

  804. she went home to be with the Lord.

  805. And the family were telling me

  806. that as they sat with her

  807. in the last few moments

  808. of her life,

  809. they managed to get

  810. to the care home

  811. to spend the last few moments

  812. with her.

  813. And do you know what they spent

  814. in the last few moments

  815. with her doing?

  816. Just singing hymns.

  817. Singing hymns.

  818. Let the word of Christ

  819. dwell in you richly.

  820. Allow that word

  821. to get deep down

  822. into your souls

  823. and pray that the spirit of God

  824. would bring light

  825. to your mind

  826. and heat to your heart

  827. and that our affections

  828. for the Lord

  829. as we feast our souls

  830. on his word

  831. would grow.

  832. Let the word of Christ

  833. dwell in you richly.

  834. This is what he's saying.

  835. Make the Bible central.

  836. Make the Bible central.

  837. And fourthly,

  838. and really quickly,

  839. make worship total.

  840. Verse 17.

  841. Paul is urging them,

  842. do you see,

  843. not to settle

  844. for a limited view

  845. of worship.

  846. Don't limit it

  847. to when you do

  848. certain things

  849. in a certain place

  850. in a certain day

  851. in a certain way,

  852. which I imagine

  853. is maybe what these

  854. false teachers

  855. in the background

  856. are promoting.

  857. You've got to see

  858. worship holistically.

  859. Worship is your whole life.

  860. Whatever you do,

  861. he says,

  862. if you do it

  863. with the goal

  864. of glorifying God,

  865. that is worship.

  866. Worship.

  867. Isn't that a brilliant thought?

  868. I tell you what,

  869. it changed the way

  870. I changed the nappy

  871. this morning.

  872. All of it is worship.

  873. Worshipping him

  874. in the classroom.

  875. Worshipping him

  876. in the sports field.

  877. Worshipping him

  878. at your desk.

  879. Worshipping him

  880. when you're putting

  881. the children to bed.

  882. Worshipping him

  883. on the commute to work.

  884. Whatever you do,

  885. whether it's word or deed,

  886. all of it is worship

  887. to God.

  888. Acceptable

  889. and pleasing

  890. to him

  891. through Jesus Christ.

  892. Paul says,

  893. make worship

  894. total.

  895. And just as we close today,

  896. let me take you back

  897. to Irene Ritchie.

  898. Put off,

  899. put on.

  900. Remember,

  901. there she is.

  902. She's up at the link.

  903. She's still wearing

  904. her old clothes.

  905. She said,

  906. come on, Irene.

  907. New you,

  908. new clothes.

  909. Exactly what Paul

  910. is saying to the Christian.

  911. As they meet together

  912. as one body,

  913. be that Christ-like

  914. counter-cultural community

  915. that God has made you

  916. and God has called you

  917. to be.

  918. And that's what it's,

  919. this is what it's going

  920. to look like for you

  921. to pursue the things above.

  922. This is what it's going

  923. to look like for you

  924. to pursue Jesus together.

  925. And this is what it's going

  926. to look like for you,

  927. remember verse 11,

  928. to be renewed

  929. in the image

  930. of your creator.

  931. Make forgiveness

  932. normal,

  933. make unity essential,

  934. make the Bible central,

  935. and make worship

  936. total.

  937. Friends,

  938. the church is a glorious

  939. thing.

  940. Glorious thing.

  941. Let's pray

  942. and let's thank God

  943. for that together.

  944. And so dear Heavenly Father,

  945. it's our prayer today

  946. that you would help us

  947. to be the kind of community

  948. that lets the peace

  949. of Christ rule

  950. and lets the word

  951. of Christ dwell

  952. richly among us.

  953. Help us this week,

  954. we ask,

  955. to seek the things

  956. that are above

  957. as we gaze on your son,

  958. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  959. Would he dwell richly

  960. in us we ask

  961. in the name of Jesus.

  962. Amen.
