  1. You'll be aware, because you've been working through this particular letter, that the Apostle Paul, who wrote this letter to the church at Colossi, had actually never visited the church.

  2. But he did feel some responsibility for its existence.

  3. An old student of his, a guy called Epaphras, had gone out from under his teaching.

  4. See, Paul had spent a lot of time in a place called Ephesus.

  5. He had based himself there.

  6. He did teaching there.

  7. And from there, Epaphras had gone out and established this church that was about 100 miles to the east.

  8. And so inevitably, you can see that Paul is keeping some degree of interest in how this church is faring.

  9. So much so that when Epaphras visited him in Rome, it seemed the most natural thing for Paul to write to that church in Colossi that Epaphras had founded.

  10. And to encourage them to keep Christ central.

  11. And over this series, you'll have seen how Paul dealt with some of the dangerous new teachings that were beginning to infiltrate into church life there in Colossi.

  12. He was listening to what Epaphras was reporting back to him.

  13. For there were those who were suggesting that they needed Jesus plus a works-based ritual.

  14. Whilst others suggested they needed Jesus plus the mystical experiences that were going around the Roman world at the time.

  15. So Paul in this letter emphasizes the complete wonder and sufficiency of who Jesus is and what he's done.

  16. And for us this morning, the question as we come to towards the close of our series in this letter is how does Paul now draw things together?

  17. What are the words that he wants to leave ringing in their ears?

  18. What are his final instructions?

  19. Well, we're going to divide up this passage under three headings.

  20. And please forgive me if alliteration drives you crazy.

  21. I'm afraid it is alliterative.

  22. But if God had never intended us to alliterate, he would never have given us the letter P.

  23. So, look, it is going to be alliteration.

  24. Forgive me for that.

  25. But maybe it means you will just remember it a fraction longer.

  26. So, my first point is this.

  27. Paul longs for worship that confirms the gospel.

  28. Paul longs for worship that confirms the gospel.

  29. Because there in verse 2, he says,

  30. Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

  31. Hang on, Andy, hang on.

  32. That's talking about prayer.

  33. Andy, look, it says prayer, not worship.

  34. How could you have such a heading?

  35. Look, when we see how Paul describes this type of prayer,

  36. we realize that he's not talking about a particular action,

  37. but a regular attitude.

  38. He tells them that they are to devote themselves to prayer.

  39. And in the Greek, this has the sense of something that is passionate and continuous and devoted,

  40. something that you strive towards with all your energy.

  41. It's a very strong word in the Greek language.

  42. So, Paul's not talking here about those occasional times of prayer

  43. that you might set aside each day for deliberate and focused and concentrated prayer.

  44. important and good though they are.

  45. He's rather thinking about an attitude that sees the whole of life lived in dependence upon God,

  46. where every moment we're conscious that all we are and all we do is in the hands of our gracious,

  47. loving, loving, heavenly Father,

  48. where the most natural action is to lift everything before him.

  49. That's prayer.

  50. That's worship.

  51. That's actually the gospel in action,

  52. for that's where we demonstrate that we've seen how sin-stained and foolish and needy we are,

  53. where we've learnt not to lean upon ourselves,

  54. but the super-abundant grace of our wonderful Saviour.

  55. And that's what I pray for you,

  56. and it's what I long for myself,

  57. that we'd increasingly be liberated from our pride,

  58. from our self-sufficiency,

  59. that we would live with our hearts and minds fixed on the knowledge of his sovereign rule and mercy.

  60. And when I have that gospel-shaped attitude of prayer,

  61. it's going to inevitably come over in two ways,

  62. and Paul talks about them.

  63. Firstly, you see, he says,

  64. my praying is going to be full of praise.

  65. It's going to be full of gratitude.

  66. It's going to be full of thankfulness.

  67. How could it be anything else as we live in the shadow of the cross?

  68. We're not going to be those who are full of complaints,

  69. but rather our hearts are going to be full of thanks that I've been saved,

  70. saved, that I've been rescued,

  71. an undeserving sinner like me,

  72. and that I've been adopted into the very family of God.

  73. Actually, this is what Paul was getting at when he wrote to the Thessalonian church.

  74. There in 1 Thessalonians 5, verses 16 to 17,

    1 Thessalonians 5:16–17

  75. he says,

  76. Rejoice always, pray continually,

  77. give thanks in all circumstances,

  78. for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

  79. Thankfulness.

  80. Does this characterize you?

  81. Does it characterize your praying?

  82. Or maybe the first thing you do when you come to prayer is you come with your shopping list

  83. and you say,

  84. Dear God, I want this, I want that, because it's all about me.

  85. So God, I've got this need and a bit of a headache.

  86. God, come and just help me.

  87. And I could do with a bit more money.

  88. God, give it to me.

  89. No, no, no, no, no.

  90. I'm not going to be that sort of person.

  91. When I understand what Jesus Christ has done for me in his grace and mercy,

  92. I'm going to be a person of praise and thankfulness.

  93. But secondly, it's not just thankfulness that will characterize this attitude of prayer,

  94. but also watchfulness.

  95. He writes there in verse 2,

  96. Devote yourselves to prayer being watchful and thankful.

  97. And to be watchful is also a gospel mark,

  98. for it reveals we understand something of the spiritual battle that is raging.

  99. So as I journey through life,

  100. I'm going to be sensitive to where Satan is attacking

  101. and to where God is working.

  102. I'm going to be prayerfully responsive in that situation.

  103. Let me just give you an illustration.

  104. It helps me.

  105. I love some of the old World War II films.

  106. I don't know why, but I do.

  107. I like watching them.

  108. And in some of the scenes,

  109. particularly when you're dealing with the RAF

  110. and the Battle of Britain and stuff like that,

  111. you have scenes where there's a sort of this,

  112. the central command,

  113. and you've got the WAF who have a map of Britain

  114. and radar in its early stages would pick out

  115. that you've got some of the Luftwaffe coming over.

  116. And so they would then,

  117. the phone would ring and they'd say,

  118. OK, we've got to respond to this.

  119. And you saw the WAF sort of pushing a particular squadron

  120. towards where the attack was coming.

  121. It was a situation of where they were responding

  122. to the attacks when they understood them.

  123. And could I say,

  124. that is what, in one sense,

  125. Paul is getting at here.

  126. That's why corporate prayer is so vital.

  127. That's why I long that all of us would treasure

  128. the privilege we have of meeting together

  129. with our brothers and sisters.

  130. Not only to cry out to God together,

  131. but also to listen and sense

  132. where he is prompting us to pray.

  133. There is something very special

  134. when God's people gather for prayer,

  135. where they seek to understand what God is saying,

  136. where we should be praying,

  137. what is happening.

  138. We don't come with the same prayer list

  139. that we had 30 years ago.

  140. We come with our open Bibles.

  141. We come with our open hearts and say,

  142. God, please, by your spirit,

  143. would you show us how we should be praying?

  144. Lord, what are you doing?

  145. What are you doing in our city

  146. and in our country and in the UK?

  147. Lord, what are you doing?

  148. We want to be responsive to that.

  149. We want to pray there.

  150. We want to be thankful.

  151. We want to be watchful.

  152. So Paul longs for worship

  153. that confirms the gospel.

  154. But secondly, Paul longs for words

  155. that clarify the gospel,

  156. for words that clarify the gospel.

  157. As Paul continues talking about prayer,

  158. he focuses down upon gospel communication,

  159. highlighting not only the ministry of evangelists

  160. like himself,

  161. but also the witness of the believers

  162. that he was writing to

  163. and his passion was that the gospel message

  164. should be clearly articulated and proclaimed.

  165. Now, you may have heard someone try to quote

  166. St. Francis of Assisi.

  167. Preach the gospel

  168. and if necessary, use words.

  169. It may sound clever,

  170. but it's wrong.

  171. And actually, there's no record

  172. that Francis of Assisi ever said that.

  173. It's quite spurious.

  174. For words are vital

  175. and it's essential that every believer

  176. is ready and able to share

  177. the life-saving message of Jesus.

  178. It's what Paul was conscious of

  179. as he worked as a pioneer evangelist.

  180. There in verse 4,

  181. he says,

  182. pray that I may proclaim it clearly

  183. as I should.

  184. And it's what Paul wanted

  185. for those believers at Colossi.

  186. There in verse 6,

  187. he says this,

  188. let your conversation be always full of grace,

  189. seasoned with salt,

  190. so that you may know

  191. how to answer everyone.

  192. Yeah, we should be those

  193. who pray for evangelists

  194. and preachers

  195. that they might be able to

  196. accurately and clearly

  197. and boldly and persuasively

  198. communicate the good news about Jesus.

  199. We should pray that they would speak

  200. those words in the right way.

  201. And by the way,

  202. could I say we have no excuse

  203. complaining about the preacher

  204. if we ourselves have not been in prayer for him.

  205. We need to pray that they would have the courage

  206. to expose the sin

  207. and the shame

  208. that separates so many from God.

  209. And we need to pray

  210. that they will have the wisdom

  211. and insight

  212. to share Christ

  213. in the most appropriate

  214. and winsome way possible,

  215. pointing all the time

  216. to Jesus.

  217. And we need to take a look at ourselves.

  218. We need to be those

  219. who are ready to communicate in words

  220. what Jesus has done for folks like us.

  221. See, this isn't just the job of the professional.

  222. It's not just the job of the evangelist.

  223. It's not just the job of pastor.

  224. If you think about communicating the gospel

  225. and you say,

  226. well, it's all right,

  227. they're doing a Life Explored thing on a Monday

  228. and Graham will preach the gospel on a Sunday

  229. and say,

  230. we don't have to do anything.

  231. No.

  232. No.

  233. How would you explain the gospel?

  234. How would you tell someone what Jesus did?

  235. Or if someone, for example,

  236. asks you about suffering,

  237. if you do get into conversation

  238. with someone about the Christian faith,

  239. they might ask you about suffering.

  240. How do you explain suffering?

  241. How can a holy and a loving God allow suffering?

  242. Well, how do you deal with that?

  243. If that's going to be the major objection

  244. and you want to share Christ,

  245. you're going to have to have thought it through.

  246. Have you?

  247. Or the accusation we increasingly get,

  248. oh, Christianity is homophobic.

  249. How would you answer?

  250. And would you be able to do it in such a way

  251. that avoided cliches

  252. and Christian catchphrases?

  253. You see, there's no point having a conversation

  254. with someone and say,

  255. oh, I know the answer to your problem.

  256. You need to be washed in the blood of the lamb.

  257. And in one sense,

  258. you and I, if we know that sort of language,

  259. we go, that's brilliant, that's great.

  260. I love what the Bible speaks about.

  261. I understand it, but they don't.

  262. And to say to someone,

  263. be washed in the blood of the lamb,

  264. they go, you are weirdos.

  265. You are nutters.

  266. That is not the language that we are to use

  267. to communicate effectively

  268. with people who know nothing

  269. of the Bible story.

  270. No, the right words are essential

  271. to communicate the right message.

  272. But Paul doesn't leave it there.

  273. So I'm trying to say that his prayer is

  274. that we should be those who have words

  275. that clarify the gospel.

  276. But thirdly, finally,

  277. I noticed that Paul longs for works

  278. that complement the gospel,

  279. works that complement the gospel.

  280. See, today, the most potent evangelistic tool

  281. the church possesses

  282. is the transformed lives of Christians.

  283. The reality is, actually,

  284. that people don't stop to consider

  285. the truth claims for the Christian faith.

  286. You may have the most brilliant

  287. apologetic answer.

  288. But often, folks will never even ask you.

  289. They'll rarely, if ever, examine the facts

  290. or consider the arguments.

  291. But what does make an impact

  292. is a deliciously different life.

  293. A life of consistency and purity

  294. and of integrity and of joy

  295. and of peace.

  296. That will attract.

  297. That will draw the questions.

  298. That will provoke the attention.

  299. And that's why Paul instructs them.

  300. They're at Colossae in chapter 4, verse 5.

  301. He says,

  302. Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders.

  303. Make the most of every opportunity.

  304. You see, gospel words are essential,

  305. but they must be accompanied by gospel works.

  306. Now, I grew up in an age

  307. when evangelism was all about

  308. getting someone to attend church

  309. or a gospel crusade.

  310. The cry was,

  311. Get them in.

  312. And so we'd be going around the doors

  313. and we'd be taking leaflets and stuff

  314. and we'd be going,

  315. Come in.

  316. Come in to the building.

  317. Come in and hear the gospel.

  318. Whereas, actually,

  319. the cry of the church today

  320. should be,

  321. Get them out.

  322. Get them out.

  323. Actually, you see,

  324. we don't do our main gospel work

  325. in this building.

  326. We do it in the relationships

  327. that we've established in our community.

  328. Very rarely

  329. will anyone just wander in off the street

  330. and hear the gospel and be saved.

  331. Now, you may have just wandered in off the street.

  332. I don't know.

  333. I'm a visitor here.

  334. You're a visitor here.

  335. If you have, well, that's great.

  336. But can I say,

  337. it would be really unusual.

  338. Folks, don't do that.

  339. However lovely a building you have,

  340. however great a location,

  341. it just doesn't happen.

  342. You see, it's only as people see the difference

  343. that Jesus makes to your life

  344. that they will start asking the questions

  345. that will lead to gospel conversations.

  346. And maybe they might attend a Life Explored

  347. or a Christianity Explored course

  348. as a result of the relationship

  349. that you have built up

  350. because you have been living a life

  351. which is under the Lordship of Christ

  352. and which is so radically different

  353. that people go,

  354. tell me why you tick.

  355. But it's not only what we do individually.

  356. Could I say it is also what we do corporately

  357. as a church.

  358. You see, church is believers.

  359. The church, Brunsfield Evangelical Church

  360. is not this building.

  361. It's you.

  362. It's the believers

  363. who are committed to this church.

  364. And as a group of believers,

  365. it is your responsibility

  366. to look for ways

  367. that you can bless this community.

  368. See, this isn't just a place

  369. for hit and run evangelism.

  370. Listen, this building is a resource

  371. to be used for the glory of God.

  372. This isn't holy space.

  373. This isn't the tabernacle.

  374. This isn't the sanctuary.

  375. It's a building.

  376. And you've got a great building

  377. in a great location.

  378. And the responsibility of you, the church,

  379. the people who are committed

  380. to this church,

  381. to say how can we use

  382. all that God has given us

  383. for the glory of God

  384. and for the sharing

  385. of the gospel.

  386. This is a resource

  387. to be used

  388. for the glory of God.

  389. As I close,

  390. let me,

  391. let me,

  392. no,

  393. I,

  394. I,

  395. you see,

  396. too often

  397. we fail as churches

  398. to say what can we do

  399. to bless the community

  400. in which we're based.

  401. Now,

  402. I'm assuming that

  403. most of you

  404. are within five,

  405. ten minutes

  406. of the building here,

  407. the church building here,

  408. that there should be

  409. a particular concern

  410. for Brunsfield.

  411. I know we've got

  412. Holy Corner up the way

  413. and I know that's a,

  414. you know,

  415. there's a bit of an overload

  416. of churches,

  417. but the point is

  418. you are here,

  419. God's put you here

  420. to witness to his grace

  421. and glory.

  422. And the question always

  423. the church must be asking

  424. is how do we connect

  425. with this community?

  426. What can we do

  427. to bless this community?

  428. That's where there needs

  429. to be wisdom

  430. and insight

  431. and a sharing

  432. with the leadership

  433. to understand

  434. what you can do

  435. more effectively

  436. for the glory

  437. of Jesus Christ.

  438. But look,

  439. as I close,

  440. let me point out again

  441. why Paul had to

  442. write this letter.

  443. Okay,

  444. the church planter

  445. Epaphras

  446. had shared with Paul

  447. how a number of people

  448. had come into

  449. the church.

  450. They'd started to question

  451. whether Epaphras

  452. had told them

  453. the whole story.

  454. One group came

  455. from the Jewish tradition

  456. of rules and regulations

  457. and they were telling

  458. the new believers

  459. that faith in Jesus

  460. wasn't sufficient

  461. in and of itself.

  462. No,

  463. they needed

  464. to strictly follow

  465. their Jewish rule book.

  466. And that happens today.

  467. Maybe some of you here

  468. have had experience

  469. of such churches

  470. which is more

  471. about the rules

  472. than Jesus.

  473. Whereas you've got

  474. to do things

  475. in a particular way

  476. and dress in a particular way

  477. and act in a particular way.

  478. The other group

  479. had been influenced

  480. by the mystery religions

  481. that were particularly

  482. popular at that time

  483. within the Roman community,

  484. particularly the Roman army.

  485. And they were teaching

  486. that you needed

  487. particular experiences

  488. to supplement

  489. to supplement

  490. what you had

  491. in Christ.

  492. And maybe some of you

  493. have come across

  494. similar churches today

  495. where what matters most

  496. is having experiences

  497. and feelings

  498. and where the Bible

  499. comes a distant second.

  500. So in responding

  501. to this,

  502. Paul emphasizes

  503. that when you have

  504. Jesus Christ,

  505. you have all that

  506. you could ever possibly

  507. need or desire.

  508. And so in this letter,

  509. gloriously,

  510. he lifts Jesus up.

  511. In this letter,

  512. he exquisitely speaks

  513. of the worth

  514. and majesty

  515. of Jesus.

  516. He reminds the Colossians

  517. that true believers

  518. are united

  519. to Christ.

  520. and because we're

  521. united to Christ,

  522. we have everything

  523. in Christ.

  524. And there's nothing

  525. better or higher

  526. that I could leave you

  527. with as a church family

  528. than these glorious words

  529. that Paul penned

  530. in response

  531. to all the challenges

  532. that the world

  533. was throwing

  534. at that church.

  535. You'll have looked

  536. at these verses already,

  537. but let me leave you

  538. with them.

  539. Colossians 1,

  540. 15 to 20,

  541. and then chapter 2,

  542. verse 10.

  543. Paul writes,

  544. he, that is Jesus,

  545. is the image

  546. of the invisible God,

  547. the firstborn

  548. over all creation,

  549. for by him

  550. all things were created.

  551. Things in heaven

  552. and on earth,

  553. visible and invisible,

  554. whether thrones

  555. or powers

  556. or rulers

  557. or authorities,

  558. all things were created

  559. by him

  560. and for him.

  561. He is before all things

  562. and in him

  563. all things hold together

  564. and he is the head

  565. of the body,

  566. the church.

  567. He is the beginning

  568. and the firstborn

  569. from among the dead

  570. so that in everything

  571. he might have the supremacy.

  572. For God was pleased

  573. to have all his fullness

  574. dwell in him

  575. and through him

  576. to reconcile to himself

  577. all things,

  578. whether things on earth

  579. or things in heaven

  580. by making peace

  581. through his blood

  582. shed on the cross.

  583. Chapter 2,

  584. verse 10.

  585. for in Christ

  586. all the fullness

  587. of the deity

  588. lives in bodily form

  589. and you've been given

  590. fullness in Christ

  591. who is the head

  592. over every power

  593. and authority.

  594. Let me pray.

  595. Father, we thank you

  596. as we close

  597. that we are able

  598. to again worship

  599. and adore

  600. the Lord Jesus Christ

  601. for everything

  602. that he is.

  603. May he be our joy

  604. and delight.

  605. Forgive us

  606. if other things

  607. become more important.

  608. Forgive us

  609. if our affections

  610. are not anchored

  611. in him.

  612. Forgive us, Lord,

  613. if the idols

  614. and fake gods

  615. of this age

  616. have dominated

  617. our thinking.

  618. Have mercy upon us,

  619. we pray.

  620. Make Christ

  621. increasingly precious.

  622. Help us to cultivate

  623. that heart love

  624. for him.

  625. Help us day by day

  626. to meditate

  627. upon his grace

  628. and mercy,

  629. to read and study

  630. his word,

  631. to respond to him

  632. in prayer.

  633. And Lord,

  634. grant that as a result

  635. our lives might be

  636. transformed,

  637. evidently transformed

  638. in ways that will

  639. provoke questions

  640. and give opportunity

  641. to share the gospel

  642. of Jesus Christ.

  643. For we ask it

  644. in his name

  645. and for his glory.

  646. Amen.
