  1. Well, thank you very much Fiona, Christy and Kat for reading that passage to us.

  2. It would be helpful if you keep that passage open as we journey through this evening.

  3. But before we get started, let me just pray.

  4. Let's pray together.

  5. Heavenly Father, we pray that the words that we have just sung would be true in our lives,

  6. that they would be true this evening as we hear your word.

  7. Father, that we would walk by faith and not by sight.

  8. As we come to a difficult passage, we pray you would help us

  9. and that we would learn from it what you want us to learn.

  10. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  11. To start us off this evening, I'm going with a little bit of a stranger introduction.

  12. And I'd like you, instead of having a nice picture on the PowerPoint,

  13. I'd like you to hold up your hand in front of your face for me.

  14. So if everyone just has a wee look at their hand.

  15. There you go. The majority of you are joining in. That's always good.

  16. We use our hands on a daily basis, don't we?

  17. But how often do we really think about them?

  18. These hands can be tools both for good and for bad.

  19. So how many of you...

  20. You can put your hands down now if you will.

  21. So how many of you have used your hands to wipe away the tear from a child's face?

  22. And with that same hand have smacked a table in frustration or anger?

  23. How many of you have used your hand to write a love letter?

  24. And how many of you have used the same hand to write that angry email to a work colleague?

  25. Our hands can be stretched out to welcome friends and family members into the warmness of our home.

  26. Or they can be weapons that can turn people away in pain.

  27. These hands can both harm and heal.

  28. They can hurt and they can comfort.

  29. They can build up or they can destroy.

  30. And that's just our hands.

  31. This evening in 1 Samuel chapter 23, I wonder if you noticed as Kat was reading to us the recurring word hand or hands.

    1 Samuel 23 chapter mention

  32. It's as if there's a power play going on.

  33. Saul thinks that David is in his hands.

  34. He's got him in his grasp.

  35. That he's nearly one.

  36. But God does not deliver David into Saul's hand, the passage says.

  37. So in this whole power play, the question that I want us to think about this evening is whose hand will prevail?

  38. As we break into this next installment of the fugitive narrative of David's life in 1 Samuel,

  39. we've seen David on the run.

  40. He's fleeing from place to place for his life.

  41. And we've seen Saul, the king of Israel, slaughter priests and a whole town just to get his enemy.

  42. Saul has completely lost it.

  43. David, as God's anointed king, is facing hostility from God's enemies.

  44. And I'm sure that time and time again in this whole period in David's life, he was thinking,

  45. whose hand will prevail?

  46. Is God really going to win?

  47. Will Saul's hand tighten his grip around me or will God deliver me by his mighty hand?

  48. Whose hand will prevail?

  49. But as we will see this evening, even though Saul seems so close and seems to have David on the ropes,

  50. God's hand is working and nothing will prevail against it.

  51. God's hand will prevail.

  52. And in this passage, we see three things that the hand of God is doing.

  53. And the first thing that we see in this passage is the helping hand of God.

  54. In 1 Samuel 23, verses 1 to 14, the helping hand of God.

    1 Samuel 23:1–14

  55. So in the beginning of chapter 23, we find David and his motley crew of the distressed,

  56. the debtors and the discontent outcasts of Israel hiding in a forest.

  57. And in verse 1, David is told that the Philistines are looting the threshing floors of Kyla,

  58. a town around five miles away from where he currently is.

  59. Now a threshing floor is a place usually outside the town where grain was stored.

  60. And during harvest time, everyone would be there, separating the chaff from the grain.

  61. And so it is the ideal place to attack because you'd get all the benefits of harvest without all the work.

  62. So the Philistines were smart. That is exactly what they were doing.

  63. But what would you expect David to do at this moment?

  64. Now remember, he has no obligation to the people of this town.

  65. He doesn't need to put his neck on the line.

  66. He's got the king of Israel on his heels with a massive army, I might add.

  67. Everything in this situation is screaming out, David, don't even think about it.

  68. Go home, put your feet up.

  69. Let Saul deal with his own mess.

  70. But notice what he does in verse 2.

  71. David hears about the plight of his countrymen.

  72. And his reaction is not hot anger.

  73. It's not rage. It's not a battle cry.

  74. No, his first reaction is to turn to God.

  75. Verse 2 says,

  76. David's priority since defeating Goliath in 1 Samuel chapter 17

    1 Samuel 17 chapter mention

  77. has been fighting with the Philistines.

  78. And interestingly, that's actually what Saul was commanded to do by God in chapter 9 verse 16.

  79. So David is doing the job that the king should be doing.

  80. But instead of running into battle, David turns to God.

  81. Now how often do we wait and inquire of God and his word before we act?

  82. Before we attack others who have wronged us?

  83. I know my first gut reaction is to react.

  84. But what our transformed lives should lead us to do is to inquire of God and his word.

  85. So David is placing himself under the authority and protection of God.

  86. He's under God's authority because he is admitting that he is nothing but a tool in God's hand.

  87. And he's putting himself under God's protection because he only has 600 of Israel's rejects with him.

  88. He does not have a mighty army.

  89. If he goes against the Philistines and he wins,

  90. then there is no doubt on earth that God has won the victory for him.

  91. Humanly speaking, this is a no-brainer.

  92. David, go home.

  93. Chill out.

  94. But he inquires of the Lord and God helps David.

  95. In verse 2, God says,

  96. Go attack the Philistines and save Kyla.

  97. Now we can't jump over this verse without noticing the significance of this event.

  98. God has spoken to David.

  99. This is the first time that God has spoken to David in the book so far.

  100. God is revealing his will to his king for his people.

  101. Go and save them, God says.

  102. And understandably, David's men are afraid in verse 3.

  103. So David asks God again.

  104. And in verse 4, God says,

  105. Go down to Kyla, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand.

  106. God says, Go, David.

  107. The battle is already won.

  108. The victory is mine.

  109. You and your weak army will win, but not by your strength.

  110. Not by your skill, but by my helping hand.

  111. So David and his reject army win and defeat the Philistines.

  112. God's hand had been in this battle, helping and fighting for David.

  113. But just like every good story, after the triumph of an underdog,

  114. comes a devastating event.

  115. Saul gets wind of David's whereabouts.

  116. And so he jumps to the worst conclusion possible.

  117. In verse 7, he says,

  118. God has delivered him into my hands.

  119. For David has imprisoned himself by entering a town with gates and bars.

  120. What an absolute fool.

  121. The man who should be sitting on the throne and ruling in righteousness and wisdom

  122. has become the court jester.

  123. He's become the clown.

  124. In his hatred for David, he completely bypasses God.

  125. He isn't thinking that God has been working in David's life.

  126. That God has been helping him and defending him.

  127. No, he is completely blind to it all.

  128. So do you see the difference between David and Saul?

  129. David sees his enemy and he inquires of what God's will is and he acts upon it.

  130. Saul has no thought for God's will.

  131. But simply presumes that he is blameless and that God is on his side.

  132. Somehow Saul thinks that God is pleased with him,

  133. even though he has no regard for his people.

  134. Saul, as king, should have been the one to protect Kyla,

  135. to save the town from the Philistines, but he is not fit to be king.

  136. And nor is he the right king.

  137. And so the real king steps in and accomplishes God's will.

  138. So Saul calls an army to go and get David in verse 8.

  139. But this is not a thank you party.

  140. This is not a parade with presents and flowers,

  141. but this is a force equipped with swords and hatred,

  142. with the only goal in mind to attack, capture and kill David.

  143. So what does David do?

  144. Well, again, in verse 10, he turns to God.

  145. He prays, Lord God of Israel, your servant has heard definitely

  146. that Saul plans to come to Kyla and destroy the town on account of me.

  147. Will the citizens of Kyla surrender me to him?

  148. Will Saul come down as your servant has heard?

  149. Lord God of Israel, tell your servant.

  150. So God does.

  151. God tells David that the town will hand him over to Saul.

  152. And so David and his 600 men leave in verse 13,

  153. and they go from place to place, running for their lives.

  154. But two things to notice about this little event in the life of David.

  155. The first is the absolute tyranny of Saul.

  156. The people of Kyla are so afraid of this king

  157. that they're willing to hand David over to him.

  158. They're happy to sell out the man who's just put his life on the line for them.

  159. But the second thing to notice is how God is helping David.

  160. God has helped David by giving him and his 600 men victory.

  161. He has protected them and warned them of the town's intentions,

  162. giving them time to flee.

  163. So the unrighteous king has lost the plot.

  164. The righteous king is being obedient and relying on God,

  165. and the true and ultimate king of the universe

  166. is ruling over this whole situation,

  167. helping his servant David.

  168. Look at the end of verse 14.

  169. God did not give David into his hand.

  170. God's helping hand is at work in David's life.

  171. Now people can look at this passage and use it as a justification

  172. for a desire to hear the voice of God directing them in everything they do.

  173. But the truth is that God has already spoken

  174. and revealed himself to us in his words.

  175. The question is, in our times of need, where do we run?

  176. Do we run and hide wishing for the comfort of an easy life?

  177. Or when we face opposition, do we run to God?

  178. Our first response should be to cry out to God in prayer

  179. and earnestly seek his will by reading his word,

  180. by speaking to his people,

  181. and then actively doing something about it.

  182. But how often are we like Saul?

  183. How often don't we take God's word into account

  184. and we just live our lives according to our own wishes

  185. and our own desires?

  186. Sometimes God's helping hand is very visible in our life,

  187. and sometimes he completely turns situations around

  188. and lifts us out of difficult circumstances.

  189. But on the most part,

  190. God keeps us in our difficult places

  191. and he helps us through them.

  192. He helps us by giving us endurance, patience,

  193. and a greater reliance on him.

  194. God is helping you because in the future you'll look back

  195. and you will see God's goodness in your suffering.

  196. Seeing the helping hand of God in our lives

  197. should mean that as Christians we have the attitude of David,

  198. attitudes of humility, of service,

  199. of complete dependence and obedience to God.

  200. Our lives should be marked by a complete surrendering to God's will.

  201. God's helping hand is at work in our lives all the time.

  202. And seeing him at work in our lives,

  203. both in the day to day and through the work of Jesus Christ,

  204. we should be able to wholeheartedly say,

  205. Lord, take my life and let it be consecrated to thee.

  206. It is yours, not mine.

  207. So as David is on the run,

  208. as he is fleeing for his life,

  209. we see the helping hand of God.

  210. And the second thing that we see in this passage

  211. is the strengthening hand of God.

  212. The strengthening hand of God in verses 15 to 18.

  213. So David is now in the desert of Ziph

  214. and he knows that Saul is searching high and low for him.

  215. He's got nowhere to hide.

  216. Saul is convinced of David's treachery

  217. and determined that killing him is God's will.

  218. But put yourself in David's shoes for a second.

  219. He's been on the run for a while now.

  220. He's been imprisoned and he's escaped.

  221. He's hidden in caves with 400 men.

  222. He's been as low as can be

  223. from the palace courts to a cave in the middle of nowhere.

  224. But also remember that he has been anointed king over Israel.

  225. And he started off his life of running as one man,

  226. as an individual.

  227. And now he has 600 men with him.

  228. David is growing in popularity.

  229. He saved a town from being killed by the Philistines,

  230. but he is still on the run.

  231. Can you imagine how discouraged he is at this stage?

  232. Everything in his life seems to be going wrong.

  233. He knows where God has promised he will be.

  234. He's been seeking to live out his life obediently and according to God's will,

  235. but nothing is going his way.

  236. I'm sure he was thinking,

  237. God, when are you going to give me a break?

  238. And in verse 16, we see a daring but caring move from Jonathan.

  239. See, he went to David and it says that Jonathan helped him find strength in God.

  240. What a godly friend Jonathan is.

  241. He put his own life on the line to go and encourage his friend,

  242. but not just with a pat on the back or a nice little motivational speech.

  243. Jonathan is pointing David to God,

  244. pointing to the source of all strength,

  245. pointing him to the only one who can sustain him now in the time of his fear.

  246. In verse 17, Jonathan says,

  247. Jonathan is strengthening David by reiterating the promises of God to him that he will be king.

  248. God is strengthening David through Jonathan.

  249. Now here we get a little glimpse into how deep this friendship really is.

  250. Jonathan knows exactly where David is and how to find him.

  251. And yet he doesn't tell his own dad.

  252. And he puts his life on the line to go and encourage David.

  253. And he says to David,

  254. I will be second to you.

  255. So as the prince of Israel,

  256. Jonathan is relinquishing his place of authority and power and bowing down to God's will.

  257. Jonathan is a true friend.

  258. When was the last time that you saw a fellow Christian struggling

  259. and you encouraged them by pointing them to God?

  260. All too often,

  261. I think we casually say,

  262. I'm praying for you.

  263. Or we pull a verse out of context and we quote it and we think that we've somehow helped that person.

  264. And those are good things to do,

  265. to pray for people and to tell verses that will encourage them.

  266. But do you know what's helped me most in my times of pain and suffering and despair?

  267. Having a fellow believer come alongside me,

  268. weep and mourn with me,

  269. but ultimately pointing me to the glorious truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  270. The world will tell us that we cannot help people,

  271. but that is a lie.

  272. Because as Christians,

  273. we can point people to the only source of peace,

  274. to the only source of assurance,

  275. God,

  276. that is how God can use you

  277. and can use me

  278. to strengthen people.

  279. David isn't only strengthened by having a friend in Jonathan,

  280. but much more than that,

  281. David is strengthened by Jonathan's certainty

  282. that God is faithful

  283. and that his promises will be fulfilled.

  284. Jonathan is certain that God's plan will prevail,

  285. that God's hand will prevail.

  286. And he knows that David's life is in God's hand.

  287. God uses people to strengthen people.

  288. Now it's so easy, isn't it,

  289. to walk into church on a Sunday morning

  290. or to walk into a small group during the week

  291. and to moan,

  292. to complain about how busy we are

  293. or how hard work is

  294. or how difficult the kids are at this moment in time.

  295. And those are things that we should be praying for.

  296. Absolutely.

  297. But so often I think we moan instead of praying.

  298. How different would our church life be

  299. if instead of coming to moan,

  300. we turned up and asked the question,

  301. how can we encourage people?

  302. How different would our church life be

  303. if instead of showing up

  304. and consuming everything we can,

  305. instead of looking out for our own interests,

  306. our own wishes,

  307. our own desires,

  308. but we actually came with a question in mind,

  309. how can I build up my brother and sister in Christ today?

  310. I can tell you the difference.

  311. Our church would be transformed.

  312. People would be happier

  313. and more willing to serve and care for others.

  314. But the thing that makes this change,

  315. this transformation,

  316. is not behavior modification.

  317. Because if we think that,

  318. then we've missed the point.

  319. It is not simply putting on your Sunday best

  320. and smiling until your cheeks hurt.

  321. No.

  322. It is walking into a room

  323. with fellow broken brothers and sisters of Christ

  324. and pointing them to the one place

  325. where they can find real strength,

  326. lasting certain hope

  327. and endurance through struggles

  328. and peace that passes all understanding.

  329. So the question we should ask

  330. when we prepare to go to any meeting,

  331. whether that's Sundays,

  332. small group,

  333. or whether that's coffee

  334. with a friend or family member,

  335. the question is,

  336. how can I best point this person

  337. to the promises of God?

  338. How might God use me

  339. to strengthen this individual?

  340. How can I best serve this person

  341. so that they are absolutely overwhelmed

  342. by God's goodness?

  343. How can I best point this person

  344. to see the sheer beauty of the gospel?

  345. God uses people to strengthen people.

  346. That is what Jonathan did.

  347. That is how God could be working for you

  348. and that is how God could be working through you.

  349. What a privilege it is

  350. that God would see fit to use us

  351. to be instruments in his hand

  352. to strengthen people.

  353. So here's a little practical challenge for you.

  354. After our service this evening,

  355. turn to the person next to you.

  356. Ask them how you can pray for them.

  357. Encourage them

  358. and then pray together.

  359. Nothing out there,

  360. nothing weird,

  361. nothing too strange

  362. for a Sunday evening.

  363. It'll add five minutes

  364. to our Sunday evening service,

  365. but it will be a huge encouragement

  366. to your fellow brother and sister

  367. sitting next to you.

  368. That is how God can use you

  369. to strengthen others

  370. and that is how God can strengthen you.

  371. The third thing

  372. and final thing

  373. that we see in this passage

  374. is the mighty hand of God.

  375. Verses 19 to 29,

  376. the mighty hand of God.

  377. So imagine for a second

  378. how Saul is feeling.

  379. He's been chasing David down

  380. for absolutely ages.

  381. But each time David manages

  382. to escape his grip.

  383. And so you can imagine

  384. his delight as the citizens

  385. of, as the Ziphites

  386. come to him in verse 19

  387. and tell him exactly

  388. where David is hiding.

  389. He thinks his lucky day has come.

  390. In verse 20, they say,

  391. now your majesty,

  392. come down whenever it pleases you

  393. to do so

  394. and we will be responsible

  395. for giving him into your hands.

  396. Now,

  397. Saul couldn't have asked

  398. for any better subjects,

  399. could he?

  400. These men are happily

  401. bowing low

  402. and kissing the ring

  403. of a treacherous ruler.

  404. Saul thinks that his hand

  405. will prevail

  406. and that he will finally

  407. get his grip

  408. around David's throat.

  409. The scales, he's thinking,

  410. are finally tipped in my favor.

  411. And so he responds

  412. in verses 21 to 23,

  413. saying,

  414. the Lord bless you

  415. for your concern for me.

  416. Go and get more information.

  417. Find out where David

  418. usually goes

  419. and who has seen him there.

  420. They tell me

  421. he is very crafty.

  422. Find out about

  423. all the hiding places

  424. he uses

  425. and come back to me

  426. with definite information.

  427. Then I will go with you.

  428. If he is in the area,

  429. I will track him down

  430. among all the clans

  431. of Judah.

  432. Do you notice something

  433. about his response?

  434. He is absolutely paranoid.

  435. He starts off with a blessing

  436. on the Ziphites,

  437. which is really ironic

  438. because he's using

  439. God's name

  440. to bless a people

  441. who are betraying

  442. God's anointed king.

  443. And then he gives

  444. a kind of arrogant statement.

  445. Oh, you're doing all this

  446. for little old me.

  447. And he becomes

  448. more and more paranoid

  449. and more concerned

  450. about the minute details

  451. of the plan

  452. and the strategy.

  453. He's asking

  454. for more information.

  455. He wants to know

  456. exactly where David moves,

  457. how many steps

  458. he has done that day

  459. and how many people

  460. he has seen.

  461. It's like the scenes

  462. in those police movies

  463. where they're staking out

  464. a suspect.

  465. They lie in hiding,

  466. waiting to get

  467. all the dirt

  468. that they need.

  469. Patiently taking pictures,

  470. usually got a big

  471. mind map on the wall.

  472. Checking faces

  473. to find that one weak link

  474. that will crack the case.

  475. And that is what Saul wants.

  476. But he doesn't just want

  477. mug shots or pictures.

  478. He wants full-blown

  479. thick folders

  480. on everyone

  481. who is around David.

  482. Why?

  483. Because the end of verse 22,

  484. Saul says,

  485. they tell me

  486. he is very crafty.

  487. Again, Saul,

  488. how foolish are you?

  489. He is attributing

  490. David's success

  491. to skill

  492. and cunning.

  493. The only reason

  494. David is still

  495. in the wind

  496. is because God's hand

  497. is protecting

  498. and strengthening

  499. him.

  500. God's hand

  501. is so mighty

  502. that all the forces

  503. of Israel

  504. could descend

  505. and nothing

  506. could touch David.

  507. God is working.

  508. So Saul

  509. is absolutely

  510. paranoid

  511. and he wants

  512. more information

  513. but notice

  514. how his speech

  515. ends in verse 23.

  516. I will track

  517. him down

  518. among all

  519. the clans

  520. of Judah.

  521. So much

  522. pride

  523. but no mention

  524. of prayer.

  525. No desire

  526. to seek God.

  527. No inkling

  528. of any desire

  529. to do God's will.

  530. Saul's priority

  531. is himself.

  532. King Saul

  533. is proud

  534. because he sees

  535. the forces

  536. that are behind him

  537. and he thinks

  538. that his whole army

  539. will bring David

  540. to his knees

  541. but he forgets

  542. who is standing

  543. behind David.

  544. David has

  545. the great God

  546. of the universe

  547. who is on his side.

  548. The God who speaks

  549. and it happens.

  550. The God who parts

  551. the sea

  552. for his people

  553. to be free.

  554. The God who does

  555. the impossible

  556. and the God

  557. who is faithful

  558. to every single

  559. one of his promises.

  560. God's mighty hand

  561. is on David

  562. and Saul's

  563. puny army

  564. in comparison

  565. can do absolutely

  566. nothing about it.

  567. And so in verses

  568. 24 to 26

  569. we see the ultimate

  570. cat and mouse chase.

  571. Saul is on David's heels

  572. and these short verses

  573. are packed

  574. with so much tension.

  575. So if this were a movie

  576. you could imagine

  577. the scary music

  578. getting louder

  579. and louder

  580. as you read.

  581. Ramping up the intensity

  582. as you see David

  583. nearly being caught.

  584. And then in verse 26

  585. the tension

  586. is almost so unbearable

  587. that you're on the edge

  588. of your seat.

  589. Saul is on one side

  590. of the mountain

  591. David on the other.

  592. And it's at this point

  593. you grab the pillow

  594. that's on the couch

  595. next to you

  596. because you can't bear

  597. seeing David

  598. captured,

  599. humiliated and killed.

  600. But just as the tension

  601. is at its highest

  602. in verse 27

  603. a messenger came

  604. to Saul

  605. saying come quickly

  606. the Philistines

  607. are raiding the land.

  608. And then Saul

  609. broke off his pursuit

  610. of David

  611. and went to meet

  612. the Philistines.

  613. Now we can read

  614. this blindly

  615. and think that this

  616. is nothing but a coincidence.

  617. Or

  618. we can read this

  619. with an understanding

  620. of who

  621. our great God is

  622. and how mighty

  623. he is

  624. and what he does

  625. for his people

  626. he delivers them

  627. from trouble

  628. and nothing

  629. not even an army

  630. can thwart his plans.

  631. God's mighty hand

  632. is protecting

  633. his servant.

  634. God's hand

  635. will always

  636. prevail.

  637. Now you might be

  638. sitting there thinking

  639. well that all sounds nice

  640. but I don't feel it.

  641. as we walk out

  642. of this building

  643. this evening

  644. we step into a world

  645. that is holding

  646. its fist against us

  647. in hostility.

  648. A world that

  649. despises us

  650. for what we believe

  651. and who we serve.

  652. How on earth

  653. can God be working

  654. in all of that?

  655. How can God's mighty hand

  656. be at work

  657. if Christians

  658. all over the world

  659. are suffering

  660. and being persecuted

  661. for their faith?

  662. how can God

  663. be at work

  664. in my life

  665. if everything

  666. around me

  667. is screaming

  668. the exact opposite?

  669. Well God is working

  670. because he is

  671. building his church.

  672. He is calling

  673. people to himself

  674. and nothing

  675. not even the gates

  676. of hell

  677. will prevail

  678. against it.

  679. As Christians

  680. we've been warned

  681. that we will suffer

  682. for Jesus

  683. but we see

  684. that the suffering

  685. that we face

  686. now

  687. for following

  688. God's anointed

  689. king

  690. the king Jesus

  691. is preparing us

  692. for an eternity

  693. with him.

  694. The promise

  695. far outweighs

  696. the pain.

  697. This whole chapter

  698. and how God

  699. has been working

  700. in it

  701. is so relevant

  702. for us today

  703. because we see

  704. God doing the same

  705. things in our lives.

  706. lives.

  707. So God

  708. the creator

  709. of this world

  710. the father

  711. who lovingly

  712. gave life

  713. to humanity

  714. has watched us

  715. descend

  716. into the depths

  717. of despair

  718. and sin

  719. and rebellion

  720. against him

  721. but instead

  722. of walking away

  723. instead of

  724. turning his back

  725. he looked at us

  726. struggling

  727. in the depths

  728. of despair

  729. and he helped

  730. but not just

  731. by throwing

  732. us a lifeline

  733. not just

  734. by giving us

  735. a hand

  736. out of the muck

  737. no he helped

  738. by stepping

  739. into our mess

  740. God in the flesh

  741. stepped into

  742. our ruin

  743. and mess

  744. and he became

  745. one of us

  746. why?

  747. So that we can

  748. be reconciled

  749. to God

  750. brought back

  751. into a right

  752. relationship

  753. with him

  754. and taken

  755. from being

  756. a wretch

  757. under God's wrath

  758. to being

  759. sons and

  760. daughters

  761. clothed

  762. in royalty

  763. God makes

  764. the impossible

  765. possible

  766. Jesus took

  767. our punishment

  768. and brought

  769. us to God

  770. and he is

  771. strengthening us

  772. daily because

  773. we are not

  774. alone

  775. Jesus promised

  776. his disciples

  777. that once he

  778. left he would

  779. send a comforter

  780. and that person

  781. is the Holy Spirit

  782. who dwells within

  783. every Christian

  784. and is making

  785. us more into

  786. the image

  787. and likeness

  788. of Jesus

  789. we are constantly

  790. being strengthened

  791. because as Christians

  792. we are being

  793. transformed from

  794. the inside

  795. out

  796. and being pointed

  797. to the goodness

  798. the glory

  799. and the majesty

  800. of our great

  801. and mighty God

  802. now if this is

  803. not the act

  804. of an

  805. all powerful

  806. all loving

  807. God

  808. then I do not

  809. know what is

  810. Jesus going

  811. to the cross

  812. carrying all

  813. of our sin

  814. and shame

  815. being in

  816. darkness

  817. and torment

  818. in our place

  819. and finishing

  820. the payment

  821. with the cry

  822. it is finished

  823. that is the

  824. mightiest work

  825. that this world

  826. will ever see

  827. but that is not

  828. the end of the

  829. story

  830. because God

  831. raised Jesus

  832. from the dead

  833. and has promised

  834. his return

  835. and until that

  836. day

  837. until the

  838. whole church

  839. will gather

  840. as one body

  841. before the

  842. throne of God

  843. and sing

  844. holy

  845. holy

  846. holy

  847. holy

  848. as the

  849. Lord God

  850. almighty

  851. we have a

  852. mission

  853. we have a

  854. message to

  855. proclaim

  856. and the

  857. message is

  858. that God

  859. is still

  860. at work

  861. and that God's

  862. hand

  863. will prevail

  864. that is the

  865. message that we

  866. walk out of here

  867. with this evening

  868. victory belongs

  869. to our God

  870. God's hand

  871. will and

  872. has prevailed

  873. let's pray

  874. together

  875. father in our

  876. suffering

  877. in our pain

  878. in our hurt

  879. and in our

  880. broken lives

  881. would you

  882. help us

  883. in our

  884. discouragements

  885. in our

  886. doubts

  887. in our

  888. questions

  889. would you

  890. strengthen us

  891. and would you

  892. help us

  893. strengthen others

  894. and in the

  895. time where we

  896. feel down

  897. and out

  898. where we

  899. feel on the

  900. ropes

  901. and we

  902. feel that the

  903. world is

  904. winning

  905. would your

  906. mighty hand

  907. be at work

  908. in us

  909. and would you

  910. put people

  911. around us

  912. who point

  913. us to your

  914. goodness

  915. people who

  916. remind us

  917. of the good

  918. news of the

  919. gospel that

  920. Jesus Christ

  921. has won

  922. that nothing

  923. on earth

  924. will stop

  925. your plan

  926. and that your

  927. church is

  928. being built

  929. we ask this

  930. for your fame

  931. and your fame

  932. alone

  933. in Jesus

  934. holy and

  935. precious name

  936. amen

  937. amen
