  1. Thank you everyone and good morning. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Alistair.

  2. I have the privilege of being the Assistant Pastor here at Brunsfield and really helpful if you keep that open in front of you this morning.

  3. But I'd like to start us off by asking a question.

  4. Have you ever thought that you were determined to do something, determined about something,

  5. but then someone else showed up and they were far more determined than you were?

  6. Have you ever been in that situation?

  7. So a few years ago, I did my first ever five-kilometer run.

  8. I was sitting at my desk one day in the previous church that I worked in and thought,

  9. I'll just do it. I'll just go for it.

  10. And so I did and it took me 33 minutes for my first time.

  11. Now for those of you who know about running and jogging, that is atrocious.

  12. And so it's really slow and it shows how unfit I am.

  13. And so I decided that I was going to get my time down.

  14. I was going to do better than 33 minutes.

  15. I thought I was dedicated.

  16. And so I was running and running and running regularly.

  17. And I managed to get it down to 27 minutes.

  18. I was very proud of myself.

  19. But then I looked at two of my friends who started running at the same time.

  20. And my determination was gone.

  21. They managed to get down to 23 minutes for a 5K.

  22. So their determination to get fit, their determination to get a better time,

  23. made mine pale in comparison.

  24. And what we're going to think about this morning is the determination of a devout servant

  25. from this passage in Isaiah.

  26. So in Isaiah this morning, we're looking at the third servant song.

  27. And we see how this servant, this promised Messiah from the Old Testament,

  28. was so determined to accomplish God's will.

  29. And so devoted to God.

  30. And spoiler alert, this servant is Jesus Christ.

  31. Who would walk the face of this earth just hundreds of years after God spoke this message

  32. to the people of Israel through his spokesman, Isaiah.

  33. And the cry of God in Isaiah chapter 1 through to chapter 38 is,

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  34. Israel, turn to me.

  35. Do not turn to idols.

  36. Come back to me and repent.

  37. The God who made you.

  38. The God who loves you.

  39. But Israel are absolute in their disobedience.

  40. Isaiah is warning Israel of the future events that are coming their way.

  41. They will be carried off into captivity in Babylon

  42. because of their rebellion and disobedience against God.

  43. So they are being warned that they will be slaves in a foreign land.

  44. They will not be treated with kindness.

  45. They will not be rejoicing.

  46. But they will be crying out with the words from Isaiah 49 verse 14.

    Isaiah 49:14

  47. If you look over the page, it says,

  48. The Lord has forsaken me.

  49. The Lord has forgotten me.

  50. So when they look at the disaster in their lives,

  51. they will say again in chapter 49 verse 21,

  52. I was exiled and rejected.

  53. Who has brought these up?

  54. I was left alone.

  55. Do you feel the pain in those words?

  56. I was left alone.

  57. And it is into that mess that God speaks and his message is,

  58. Israel, wake up.

  59. Listen to me.

  60. Ten times in this section from chapter 50 to 54,

  61. God says, listen to me.

  62. And listen to my servant.

  63. So God is calling them to listen.

  64. But why should they listen to this servant?

  65. What's so different about this guy

  66. that they should listen to him?

  67. Well, the difference, as we will see this morning,

  68. is that this servant is determined in his devotion to God.

  69. God tells us this by giving us three examples of who this servant is.

  70. God points out the character,

  71. the confidence,

  72. and the call of his servant.

  73. And all of these things point to the fact

  74. that he is determined in his devotion to God.

  75. So this morning, we're going to be presented with who Jesus is,

  76. what he has done,

  77. and we will be challenged by his determination to follow God's will,

  78. and we will be challenged to ask ourselves the question,

  79. do we even have a shadow of the character,

  80. confidence, and call that Jesus had?

  81. My prayer is that as we look at Jesus

  82. and the determination of this devout servant,

  83. that we would be challenged,

  84. that we would be transformed to become better servants,

  85. with more determination to follow God

  86. and live for Jesus.

  87. So the first thing that we see in these few verses in Isaiah

  88. is character,

  89. the character of God's servant in verses 4 to 6.

  90. So two character traits that we see in these verses

  91. are submission and obedience,

  92. that stem from Jesus' determination

  93. to act according to God's will.

  94. Look with me at verse 4.

  95. The servant speaks the word of God

  96. as a well-instructed tongue.

  97. He is in such a close relationship with God

  98. that he knows his words,

  99. and his words sustain the weary.

  100. So those who are weak,

  101. those who are downcast,

  102. those who are mourning,

  103. will listen to the words of this servant

  104. and will be restored,

  105. will be built up,

  106. and will be encouraged.

  107. Is this not an encouragement

  108. as we think about the person of Jesus Christ?

  109. When we are at our weakest,

  110. when we are at our wits' end,

  111. when we are a helpless case,

  112. we can turn to him

  113. and know that his words will not condemn us,

  114. but they will sustain us.

  115. They will not judge us,

  116. but they will build us up.

  117. But these are not the empty words

  118. of a self-help author

  119. or a well-known motivational speaker,

  120. but these are the words of a servant

  121. who is wholeheartedly dedicated

  122. to God, to God's people,

  123. and who is lovingly encouraging them

  124. and us with his words.

  125. And in verse 5,

  126. we see the extent of Jesus' submission

  127. and obedience to God

  128. because unlike the nation of Israel,

  129. he hasn't rebelled.

  130. Verse 5, the servant says,

  131. I have not been rebellious.

  132. I have not turned away.

  133. So do you see what this would mean

  134. to the nation of Israel?

  135. They will be sitting in captivity in Babylon,

  136. distant from their land,

  137. cut off from the temple,

  138. surrounded by an army of pagan gods

  139. and false deities

  140. because of their rebellion

  141. and because of their rejection of God.

  142. And God provides them with a savior

  143. who is perfectly innocent,

  144. perfectly obedient to God's will

  145. and perfectly submissive to him.

  146. This servant is a fulfillment of Israel.

  147. He did what they could not.

  148. Israel sought after other gods.

  149. They searched for truth outside of God.

  150. They rejected him.

  151. But God's servant,

  152. the promised Messiah,

  153. would come,

  154. save the world,

  155. speaking God's word,

  156. and he will fulfill what Israel could not do.

  157. He is perfect.

  158. But how far does his submission and obedience go?

  159. To what extent is this servant

  160. really determined in his devotion to God?

  161. Well, the answer is right there in verse 6.

  162. Let that sink in.

  163. God's servant is so determined,

  164. so devoted to God

  165. that he willingly,

  166. willingly

  167. chose to suffer

  168. in accordance with God's will,

  169. God's good will,

  170. to save his people.

  171. That means that he was ridiculed,

  172. he was in pain,

  173. and he died.

  174. This is a perfect description

  175. of what we will celebrate later on

  176. in our service

  177. as we take communion together.

  178. how Jesus willingly went

  179. to the pain and torment

  180. of the cross

  181. in perfect obedience

  182. and submission to God.

  183. And do you see how this is exactly

  184. what Jesus did

  185. as he was surrounded

  186. by a garrison of Roman soldiers?

  187. Beaten and mocked,

  188. spat on,

  189. and a crown of thorns

  190. placed on his head.

  191. The all-powerful Son of God

  192. nailed to a tree.

  193. Willingly suffering

  194. so that a broken,

  195. fallen world,

  196. so that broken,

  197. fallen people

  198. like you and like me

  199. can be made right with God.

  200. This is the ultimate determination

  201. and devotion.

  202. Jesus sits in the Garden of Gethsemane

  203. in Luke chapter 22

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  204. and it says that he is in agony

  205. as he prays.

  206. His blood,

  207. his sweat is turned to blood

  208. and he knows that the cross

  209. is on the horizon.

  210. He knows that in just a few hours

  211. the people who previously

  212. followed him

  213. and loved him

  214. will be crying out

  215. for his death.

  216. But what does he pray?

  217. Father,

  218. not my will

  219. but yours be done.

  220. Jesus' determination

  221. to accomplish God's will

  222. resulted

  223. in this perfect character

  224. of obedience

  225. and submission

  226. even to the point

  227. of being sentenced

  228. to death on the cross.

  229. this is the servant.

  230. This is Jesus

  231. and his call to us

  232. this morning

  233. is the same as God's was

  234. to Isaiah.

  235. Wake up,

  236. Brunsfield Evangelical Church

  237. and listen to me.

  238. If this is all true,

  239. if he willingly

  240. suffered for me

  241. and for you

  242. as the Bible

  243. says he did,

  244. why would we not

  245. listen to him?

  246. Jesus willingly

  247. suffered for you

  248. and for me.

  249. His character

  250. is that of perfect

  251. submission and obedience

  252. to God's will

  253. which results

  254. in us being made

  255. right with God.

  256. There is no greater

  257. blessing in this world

  258. to be found.

  259. Charles Spurgeon,

  260. a preacher

  261. from many years ago

  262. put it this way,

  263. Jesus has borne

  264. the death penalty

  265. on our behalf.

  266. Behold the wonder,

  267. there he hangs

  268. upon the cross.

  269. This is the greatest sight

  270. you will ever see.

  271. Son of God

  272. and son of man,

  273. there he hangs

  274. bearing pains

  275. unutterable.

  276. The just

  277. for the unjust

  278. to bring us to God.

  279. Oh the glory

  280. of that sight.

  281. So how should

  282. the character

  283. of Jesus,

  284. the perfect servant

  285. challenge us

  286. this morning?

  287. Well it makes us

  288. ask the question,

  289. does our character

  290. reflect even

  291. the faintest

  292. degree of

  293. submission and

  294. obedience to the

  295. will of God

  296. that Jesus had?

  297. Even the faintest?

  298. seeing the perfect

  299. determination of

  300. Jesus to

  301. willingly suffer

  302. and take the

  303. punishment that we

  304. all deserve

  305. should make us

  306. listen to,

  307. submit to

  308. and obey him.

  309. The second thing

  310. that we see

  311. in this passage

  312. about the

  313. determination

  314. of a devout

  315. servant is his

  316. confidence.

  317. In verses

  318. seven to nine,

  319. confidence.

  320. So twice

  321. in these

  322. three verses

  323. Jesus,

  324. the servant

  325. who's been

  326. described in

  327. this song

  328. says that

  329. the sovereign

  330. Lord helps

  331. him in

  332. verses seven

  333. and nine.

  334. So he has

  335. such a close

  336. relationship

  337. with God.

  338. He is so

  339. devoted to

  340. him that

  341. he knows

  342. without a

  343. shadow of a

  344. doubt that

  345. God is on

  346. his side.

  347. That God

  348. is helping

  349. him.

  350. Even as

  351. he suffers

  352. and hangs

  353. on a cross

  354. he has

  355. confidence

  356. in God

  357. and God's

  358. plan.

  359. And his

  360. confidence

  361. leads him

  362. to say

  363. in verse

  364. seven,

  365. I will

  366. not be

  367. disgraced.

  368. Who will

  369. bring charges

  370. against me?

  371. And in

  372. verse eight,

  373. who is my

  374. accuser?

  375. Verse nine,

  376. who will

  377. condemn me?

  378. This is

  379. courtroom

  380. language.

  381. Jesus

  382. will stand

  383. in a

  384. courtroom

  385. and people

  386. will bring

  387. accusation

  388. after accusation

  389. against him

  390. and yet he

  391. will be

  392. proven

  393. innocent.

  394. Everyone

  395. else will

  396. be proven

  397. wrong.

  398. He is

  399. innocent and

  400. everyone will

  401. see that the

  402. great God of

  403. this world is

  404. on his side.

  405. But even

  406. though this

  407. servant knows

  408. that he's

  409. innocent,

  410. he will

  411. still be

  412. mocked,

  413. he will

  414. still be

  415. spat at,

  416. and he

  417. will still

  418. be killed,

  419. as we saw

  420. in verse

  421. six.

  422. But verse

  423. seven says,

  424. because the

  425. sovereign Lord

  426. helps me,

  427. I will not

  428. be disgraced.

  429. therefore,

  430. have I

  431. set my

  432. face like

  433. flint,

  434. and I

  435. know I

  436. will not

  437. be put

  438. to shame.

  439. So the

  440. servant's

  441. confidence in

  442. God leads

  443. to absolute

  444. determination.

  445. That's what it

  446. means when he

  447. says, I set my

  448. face like

  449. flint.

  450. Jesus'

  451. confidence in

  452. God is

  453. absolute and

  454. so he

  455. willingly walks

  456. to the

  457. cross in

  458. determination

  459. to accomplish

  460. the will

  461. of God.

  462. Jesus'

  463. confidence in

  464. God will

  465. not be

  466. shaken.

  467. He will

  468. not be

  469. distracted,

  470. he will

  471. not be

  472. taken off

  473. course,

  474. but he

  475. is resolute

  476. in his

  477. confidence

  478. and determination.

  479. Earlier in

  480. the book of

  481. Isaiah,

  482. God has

  483. been calling

  484. Israel to

  485. trust in

  486. him when

  487. they face

  488. attacks from

  489. their enemies.

  490. But they

  491. had no

  492. confidence in

  493. God.

  494. The servant

  495. fulfills what

  496. was lacking

  497. in them.

  498. The servant's

  499. confidence in

  500. God is just

  501. as strong as

  502. Israel's

  503. stubborn

  504. unwillingness to

  505. repent.

  506. He has a

  507. supernatural

  508. confidence in

  509. God and is

  510. determined to

  511. accomplish his

  512. will.

  513. And is this

  514. not what we

  515. see in

  516. Jesus in

  517. Luke chapter

    Luke 9:51

  518. 9 verse 51

  519. where it says

  520. this,

  521. Jesus set

  522. his face

  523. to go to

  524. Jerusalem.

  525. Now this is

  526. more than

  527. Jesus just

  528. looking towards

  529. a city.

  530. Because as

  531. Jesus sets

  532. his face

  533. towards

  534. Jerusalem,

  535. he is

  536. looking at

  537. and anticipating

  538. his own

  539. death.

  540. As he looks

  541. to Jerusalem,

  542. he knows that

  543. the cross is

  544. on the horizon.

  545. He knows that

  546. every step he

  547. takes is

  548. bringing him

  549. closer to

  550. agony.

  551. Doesn't that

  552. make us

  553. thankful?

  554. for Jesus

  555. and his

  556. confidence in

  557. God.

  558. If Jesus

  559. wasn't

  560. confident in

  561. God and

  562. didn't set

  563. his face

  564. like Flint,

  565. he would

  566. never have

  567. willingly

  568. suffered in

  569. our place

  570. on the

  571. cross.

  572. Forgiveness

  573. would not

  574. be made

  575. possible and

  576. we would

  577. still be

  578. in darkness.

  579. We would

  580. still be

  581. lost.

  582. So our

  583. response to

  584. this should

  585. be Jesus,

  586. thank you.

  587. His

  588. confidence

  589. means that

  590. we can be

  591. forgiven.

  592. We rely

  593. solely on

  594. his death

  595. on the

  596. cross as

  597. he bore

  598. the wrath

  599. of God

  600. for the

  601. sins of

  602. this world.

  603. Jesus did

  604. what we

  605. could never

  606. do.

  607. We could

  608. never even

  609. dream of

  610. doing.

  611. He lived

  612. the perfect

  613. sinless

  614. life.

  615. He was

  616. unfaltering

  617. in his

  618. confidence and

  619. determination and

  620. devotion to

  621. God.

  622. We should be

  623. thankful because

  624. Jesus did what

  625. I couldn't even

  626. dream of.

  627. But what if we

  628. don't have the

  629. same confidence?

  630. What if we

  631. struggle?

  632. What if we're

  633. tired and

  634. weary?

  635. Well, Jesus

  636. doesn't condemn

  637. us when we

  638. fail.

  639. Look at verse

  640. four again.

  641. He knows the

  642. words that

  643. sustain the

  644. weary.

  645. When we are

  646. weak, when we

  647. are broken,

  648. when our

  649. confidence and

  650. faith seems so

  651. fragile that

  652. they could

  653. break any

  654. second, Jesus

  655. speaks and

  656. he says, I

  657. am enough.

  658. Think of the

  659. example of

  660. Jesus'

  661. disciple Peter

  662. in Luke

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  663. chapter 22.

  664. Jesus told

  665. Peter that he

  666. would deny

  667. him three

  668. times and

  669. Peter, quite

  670. full of

  671. himself, said,

  672. Lord, I am

  673. ready to go

  674. with you to

  675. prison and

  676. to death.

  677. But just a

  678. few hours

  679. later, Jesus

  680. was arrested,

  681. put on trial

  682. in the house

  683. of the high

  684. priest and

  685. Peter was

  686. watching this

  687. whole situation

  688. unfold, resting

  689. by a fire.

  690. Three times

  691. Peter denied

  692. any knowledge

  693. of who Jesus

  694. was.

  695. Three times

  696. he denied

  697. that he had

  698. spent time

  699. with Jesus.

  700. And when the

  701. rooster crowed,

  702. Luke says

  703. that Jesus

  704. looked at

  705. him and

  706. he remembered

  707. and he

  708. ran away

  709. ashamed because

  710. Jesus was

  711. right.

  712. And so

  713. what would we

  714. expect of

  715. Peter now?

  716. Should he be

  717. cut off for

  718. good because

  719. he was

  720. ashamed and

  721. feared for

  722. his own

  723. life?

  724. Would we

  725. expect Jesus

  726. to cast him

  727. off and

  728. never speak

  729. to him

  730. again because

  731. he didn't

  732. have the

  733. same confidence

  734. and determination

  735. to follow

  736. God's will?

  737. When Jesus

  738. is raised

  739. from the

  740. dead and

  741. Peter understands

  742. fully without

  743. a shadow

  744. of a doubt

  745. who Jesus

  746. was, we

  747. see a whole

  748. new confidence

  749. in God.

  750. The man

  751. who previously

  752. cowered at the

  753. thought of being

  754. accused with

  755. Jesus, some

  756. 40 days later

  757. would stand

  758. before the

  759. people of

  760. Israel and

  761. the high

  762. court of the

  763. Jewish leaders

  764. and say,

  765. you crucified

  766. the Messiah,

  767. the one who

  768. would come to

  769. save you.

  770. Peter's

  771. confidence was

  772. changed because

  773. he understood

  774. who Jesus

  775. was.

  776. Do you

  777. know who

  778. Jesus is

  779. this morning?

  780. This radical

  781. change of

  782. confidence and

  783. change in

  784. determination is

  785. only brought

  786. about when we

  787. grasp the

  788. fundamental truth

  789. that Jesus is

  790. our Savior and

  791. that he is

  792. determined in

  793. his devotion to

  794. God.

  795. this change

  796. happened because

  797. Peter understood

  798. who Jesus

  799. was.

  800. He saw

  801. Jesus'

  802. sacrifice, the

  803. price that he

  804. paid and

  805. Peter said,

  806. I'm giving

  807. Jesus my

  808. everything.

  809. That is the

  810. kind of

  811. confidence that

  812. I want and

  813. that is the

  814. kind of

  815. confidence that

  816. I pray that

  817. we all would

  818. have.

  819. Once we

  820. understand what

  821. Jesus did on

  822. the cross,

  823. how he

  824. reconciled us

  825. to God,

  826. once we

  827. grasp the

  828. greatness of

  829. that news,

  830. we will

  831. have a

  832. newfound

  833. confidence in

  834. God.

  835. Are you

  836. confident this

  837. morning in

  838. your faith?

  839. Are you

  840. determined in

  841. your devotion to

  842. follow Jesus?

  843. If not,

  844. then look at

  845. Jesus' death on

  846. the cross and

  847. how he

  848. willingly walk

  849. to his

  850. death for

  851. you and

  852. for me.

  853. And ask

  854. yourself the

  855. question,

  856. if he was

  857. willing to

  858. die in

  859. my place,

  860. shouldn't I

  861. at least

  862. consider who

  863. he is?

  864. Or if you

  865. are a

  866. Christian and

  867. you're

  868. struggling in

  869. your confidence,

  870. then remember

  871. the words of

  872. verse 4.

  873. Jesus doesn't

  874. stand there and

  875. tell you to

  876. do a better

  877. job.

  878. He doesn't

  879. cast you off,

  880. he doesn't

  881. think your

  882. efforts are

  883. worthless, but

  884. he knows the

  885. words that

  886. sustain the

  887. weary.

  888. Turn to

  889. him in

  890. prayer.

  891. Call out for

  892. him to

  893. strengthen you.

  894. Ask for

  895. confidence and

  896. read his

  897. word because

  898. you will be

  899. built up,

  900. you will be

  901. encouraged,

  902. and you

  903. will be

  904. sustained.

  905. The third

  906. thing that we

  907. see about the

  908. determination of

  909. a devout

  910. servant is

  911. his call.

  912. In verses

  913. 10 to

  914. 11,

  915. the call.

  916. So as the

  917. nation of

  918. Israel sit

  919. in captivity

  920. in Babylon

  921. for their

  922. rejection of

  923. God, the

  924. question that

  925. this servant

  926. asks in

  927. verse 10

  928. is,

  929. who among

  930. you fears

  931. the Lord

  932. and obeys

  933. the word of

  934. his servant?

  935. And the

  936. answer is

  937. absolutely

  938. nobody.

  939. That is

  940. precisely why

  941. they're in

  942. captivity in

  943. the first

  944. place.

  945. They did

  946. not fear

  947. and obey

  948. the Lord.

  949. Notice

  950. how fear,

  951. fearing the

  952. Lord and

  953. obeying his

  954. servant are

  955. synonymous.

  956. The words

  957. of Jesus,

  958. God's servant,

  959. are the

  960. words of

  961. God.

  962. God and

  963. his servant

  964. are one

  965. and the

  966. same.

  967. So Jesus

  968. is being

  969. described as

  970. a servant

  971. here.

  972. Does that

  973. mean that

  974. he is

  975. inferior to

  976. God?

  977. Absolutely

  978. not.

  979. Jesus is

  980. a servant

  981. in the

  982. sense that

  983. he stoops

  984. down and

  985. steps into

  986. our world

  987. to take

  988. the punishment

  989. that we

  990. deserve

  991. according to

  992. the will

  993. of God.

  994. Jesus is

  995. not inferior

  996. to God,

  997. but Jesus

  998. is God.

  999. He is one

  1000. person of

  1001. the Trinity.

  1002. Verse 10

  1003. means that

  1004. you cannot

  1005. fear God

  1006. and not

  1007. obey Jesus.

  1008. You can't

  1009. obey Jesus

  1010. without fearing

  1011. God.

  1012. The two go

  1013. hand in

  1014. hand.

  1015. The only

  1016. way to be

  1017. made right

  1018. with God,

  1019. the only

  1020. way to be

  1021. forgiven of

  1022. our sin

  1023. and rebellion

  1024. against him,

  1025. something that

  1026. every single

  1027. one of us

  1028. in this world

  1029. is guilty

  1030. of,

  1031. is through

  1032. Jesus.

  1033. God in

  1034. the flesh

  1035. who is

  1036. calling us

  1037. to fear

  1038. and obedience.

  1039. But this

  1040. is not the

  1041. quivering kind

  1042. of fear in

  1043. the presence

  1044. of a tyrannical

  1045. ruler.

  1046. It doesn't

  1047. mean that we

  1048. are afraid

  1049. of God

  1050. because he

  1051. is not a

  1052. big man in

  1053. the sky

  1054. with a

  1055. stick ready

  1056. to strike

  1057. anyone who

  1058. disobeys him.

  1059. But to

  1060. fear God

  1061. means to

  1062. be in

  1063. awe of

  1064. him,

  1065. to be

  1066. reverent of

  1067. who he

  1068. is.

  1069. Those who

  1070. fear God

  1071. trust him

  1072. and have

  1073. faith in

  1074. him and

  1075. obey him.

  1076. Do you

  1077. fear God?

  1078. do you

  1079. live according

  1080. to his

  1081. word and

  1082. the teachings

  1083. of Jesus?

  1084. If you

  1085. don't,

  1086. then let me

  1087. be blunt

  1088. with you

  1089. this morning

  1090. and tell

  1091. you how

  1092. the Bible

  1093. explains your

  1094. situation.

  1095. Look at the

  1096. second half

  1097. of verse

  1098. 10.

  1099. Let the

  1100. one who

  1101. walks in

  1102. the dark

  1103. who has

  1104. no light

  1105. trust in

  1106. the name

  1107. of the

  1108. Lord and

  1109. rely on

  1110. their God.

  1111. God.

  1112. This

  1113. passage says

  1114. that if

  1115. you are a

  1116. Christian,

  1117. if you do

  1118. fear God

  1119. and obey

  1120. Jesus,

  1121. then you

  1122. are trusting

  1123. and relying

  1124. on God.

  1125. But if

  1126. you don't,

  1127. then you're

  1128. in darkness.

  1129. Now this

  1130. might not

  1131. sound too

  1132. bad.

  1133. The majority

  1134. of people

  1135. today aren't

  1136. afraid of

  1137. the dark,

  1138. but the

  1139. Bible uses

  1140. light and

  1141. darkness to

  1142. describe a

  1143. person's

  1144. relationship

  1145. with God.

  1146. God.

  1147. If someone

  1148. is right

  1149. with God

  1150. and they

  1151. are living

  1152. according to

  1153. his will,

  1154. they have

  1155. been declared

  1156. forgiven by

  1157. Jesus,

  1158. then they

  1159. look forward

  1160. to eternal

  1161. peace in

  1162. the presence

  1163. of God.

  1164. A place

  1165. free from

  1166. pain,

  1167. a place

  1168. free from

  1169. sin,

  1170. a place

  1171. of perfect

  1172. communion with

  1173. our loving

  1174. God.

  1175. But for

  1176. those who

  1177. are in

  1178. darkness,

  1179. for those

  1180. who are

  1181. looking for

  1182. light in

  1183. all other

  1184. places,

  1185. as it

  1186. says in

  1187. verse 11,

  1188. for those

  1189. who are

  1190. trying to

  1191. make their

  1192. own way

  1193. to God,

  1194. trying to

  1195. be good

  1196. enough,

  1197. do and

  1198. say the

  1199. right

  1200. things,

  1201. then the

  1202. result is

  1203. very different.

  1204. The Bible

  1205. says,

  1206. if you do

  1207. not fear

  1208. the Lord

  1209. and obey

  1210. Jesus,

  1211. then verse

  1212. 11,

  1213. you will

  1214. lie down

  1215. in torment.

  1216. If you

  1217. do not

  1218. know Jesus,

  1219. if you are

  1220. not a

  1221. Christian,

  1222. this passage

  1223. is a

  1224. warning to

  1225. you.

  1226. it is

  1227. Jesus

  1228. calling you

  1229. out of

  1230. the darkness

  1231. and into

  1232. the light,

  1233. out of

  1234. your rebellion

  1235. against

  1236. him and

  1237. into a

  1238. right

  1239. relationship

  1240. with him.

  1241. Friends,

  1242. this is the

  1243. reality of

  1244. eternal life.

  1245. You either

  1246. spend it in

  1247. the presence

  1248. of a loving

  1249. God who

  1250. willingly

  1251. suffered in

  1252. your place,

  1253. or you

  1254. spend it

  1255. in an

  1256. eternity

  1257. cut off

  1258. from God,

  1259. a place

  1260. of torment

  1261. and eternal

  1262. judgment,

  1263. a place we

  1264. call hell.

  1265. There is

  1266. no middle

  1267. ground.

  1268. You choose

  1269. to live

  1270. for Jesus

  1271. or you

  1272. choose to

  1273. reject him.

  1274. And that

  1275. is not a

  1276. decision that

  1277. we should

  1278. take lightly.

  1279. And that

  1280. is what

  1281. Jesus came

  1282. into this

  1283. world teaching.

  1284. warning the

  1285. people to

  1286. repent and

  1287. believe in

  1288. him because

  1289. the day is

  1290. coming where

  1291. time will

  1292. run out.

  1293. The

  1294. determination

  1295. of this

  1296. devout

  1297. servant was

  1298. to come

  1299. and proclaim

  1300. this message

  1301. so that

  1302. people could

  1303. be made

  1304. right with

  1305. God.

  1306. So that

  1307. people would

  1308. be saved

  1309. from the

  1310. judgmentless

  1311. to come.

  1312. This is

  1313. what Jesus

  1314. proclaimed.

  1315. This is the

  1316. message that

  1317. we are to

  1318. proclaim to

  1319. the world.

  1320. God is

  1321. telling Israel

  1322. wake up

  1323. listen to

  1324. me.

  1325. Jesus came

  1326. and told

  1327. people to

  1328. repent and

  1329. believe the

  1330. gospel.

  1331. Our message

  1332. to the

  1333. world is

  1334. exactly the

  1335. same.

  1336. Do not

  1337. come to

  1338. Brunsfield

  1339. Evangelical

  1340. Church but

  1341. come to

  1342. Jesus Christ

  1343. the Lord

  1344. and Savior

  1345. of this

  1346. world.

  1347. C.T.

  1348. Studd a

  1349. famous

  1350. cricketer

  1351. turned

  1352. missionary to

  1353. China said

  1354. this.

  1355. Some want

  1356. to live

  1357. within the

  1358. sound of a

  1359. church bell

  1360. but I want

  1361. to run a

  1362. rescue shop

  1363. within the

  1364. yard of

  1365. hell.

  1366. If we

  1367. see how

  1368. determined

  1369. Jesus was

  1370. to come

  1371. and willingly

  1372. suffer death

  1373. on the

  1374. cross for

  1375. us,

  1376. if we

  1377. see how

  1378. he constantly

  1379. called people

  1380. to be made

  1381. right with

  1382. God,

  1383. friends,

  1384. why aren't

  1385. we doing

  1386. the same?

  1387. God's

  1388. love.

  1389. If we

  1390. take Jesus

  1391. seriously,

  1392. if we

  1393. take the

  1394. call to

  1395. repent

  1396. seriously,

  1397. if we

  1398. take heaven

  1399. and hell

  1400. seriously,

  1401. then we

  1402. should take

  1403. evangelism

  1404. seriously.

  1405. Do we

  1406. share the

  1407. same call

  1408. of Jesus?

  1409. Do we

  1410. stand on

  1411. the road

  1412. that leads

  1413. to hell

  1414. and beg

  1415. people with

  1416. everything we

  1417. have to

  1418. repent and

  1419. be made

  1420. right with

  1421. God?

  1422. That is

  1423. what Jesus

  1424. did and

  1425. that is

  1426. what he

  1427. is calling

  1428. us to

  1429. do.

  1430. As I've

  1431. studied this

  1432. passage and

  1433. the determination

  1434. of Jesus

  1435. this week,

  1436. I have been

  1437. challenged,

  1438. convicted of

  1439. my own

  1440. comfortable

  1441. Christianity

  1442. and encouraged

  1443. to be

  1444. transformed

  1445. more into

  1446. his likeness.

  1447. As we

  1448. draw to a

  1449. close this

  1450. morning,

  1451. we have

  1452. seen the

  1453. determination

  1454. of a

  1455. devout

  1456. servant,

  1457. the one

  1458. whose

  1459. character

  1460. is that

  1461. of

  1462. submission

  1463. and

  1464. obedience

  1465. to the

  1466. will

  1467. of

  1468. God

  1469. to the

  1470. point

  1471. of

  1472. death

  1473. on a

  1474. cross.

  1475. And that

  1476. should

  1477. challenge

  1478. us to

  1479. submit

  1480. to

  1481. and

  1482. obey

  1483. him.

  1484. We've

  1485. seen the

  1486. confidence

  1487. of Jesus

  1488. who in

  1489. absolute

  1490. confidence

  1491. and

  1492. determination

  1493. went to

  1494. the cross,

  1495. was mocked,

  1496. beaten,

  1497. spat on

  1498. willingly,

  1499. so that

  1500. we can be

  1501. made right

  1502. with God.

  1503. And in

  1504. our times

  1505. of weakness,

  1506. in our

  1507. times of

  1508. doubt,

  1509. we can

  1510. be

  1511. confident

  1512. that

  1513. his

  1514. determination,

  1515. that his

  1516. confidence in

  1517. God means

  1518. that we

  1519. too can

  1520. be

  1521. confident

  1522. and that

  1523. we can

  1524. live

  1525. devoted

  1526. lives.

  1527. And we

  1528. have seen

  1529. the call

  1530. of Jesus,

  1531. the call

  1532. for those

  1533. who are in

  1534. darkness to

  1535. come into

  1536. the light,

  1537. those who

  1538. are in

  1539. rebellion

  1540. to trust

  1541. and rely

  1542. on God.

  1543. God.

  1544. Do you

  1545. trust and

  1546. rely on

  1547. God?

  1548. Are you

  1549. calling people

  1550. to do the

  1551. same thing?

  1552. Are we

  1553. declaring the

  1554. good news of

  1555. Jesus so

  1556. that the

  1557. world can

  1558. spend their

  1559. eternal life

  1560. in heaven

  1561. instead of

  1562. in hell?

  1563. This is the

  1564. determination of

  1565. a devout

  1566. servant that

  1567. should change

  1568. our lives,

  1569. that should

  1570. make us love

  1571. him and that

  1572. should make us

  1573. want to give

  1574. him everything

  1575. because he

  1576. gave everything

  1577. for us.

  1578. Let's pray

  1579. together.

  1580. Father,

  1581. as we

  1582. look at

  1583. Isaiah,

  1584. this passage

  1585. of your

  1586. son Jesus

  1587. Christ,

  1588. we realize

  1589. how far

  1590. we fall

  1591. from your

  1592. perfect

  1593. standards.

  1594. We realize

  1595. how weak

  1596. we are in

  1597. our

  1598. obedience and

  1599. submission to

  1600. you and we

  1601. ask that you

  1602. would forgive

  1603. us.

  1604. We ask that

  1605. you would

  1606. challenge us

  1607. and that you

  1608. would build

  1609. us up,

  1610. that you would

  1611. encourage us

  1612. to become more

  1613. like your

  1614. son Jesus

  1615. Christ,

  1616. that we would

  1617. have just a

  1618. sliver of the

  1619. determination

  1620. that he had

  1621. to be devoted

  1622. to you.

  1623. We ask this

  1624. in his holy

  1625. precious name.

  1626. Amen.

  1627. Amen.

  1628. Amen.

  1629. See you all.
