  1. Yeah, so we come this evening to not really quite the easiest of passages.

  2. Graham this morning talked about how the passage he had was an ocean,

  3. that there was so much, so much depth and riches in it.

  4. And today we come to a passage that at first glance doesn't seem to much we can learn from it.

  5. But some of our studies in 1 Samuel have been relatively straightforward.

  6. Some have been a bit challenging to work out what's going on.

  7. I particularly don't envy the speaker that's got the next passage in chapter 28

  8. with all the strange supernatural goings on there.

  9. But this chapter at first seems to have not much happening in it.

  10. And then at a second look you realise, wait, what's going on here?

  11. This is strange.

  12. And then once you work that out it's, okay, what's really going on here?

  13. In many of our studies recently we've been thinking of David as a type or a picture of Christ.

  14. And legitimately so.

  15. Later prophets and the New Testament writers frequently make much of the links between David

  16. and great David's greater son.

  17. But David is just a man.

  18. A fallen man like the rest of us.

  19. And in this passage we see him not so much as a picture of Christ,

  20. but as a picture of us in all our weakness and folly.

  21. I hope I'm not being too harsh on David.

  22. But while some of his actions in this chapter may be debatable,

  23. his motives certainly seem to be compromised.

  24. So if we start at the beginning in the first four verses of chapter 28,

  25. we find David in a low place.

  26. Fear has overwhelmed him.

  27. He's sure that it's only a matter of time until Saul kills him.

  28. Saul promised in the last chapter that he would not try to harm him again,

  29. but David knows that Saul can't be trusted.

  30. But fear is nothing new to David.

  31. Saul's been chasing him on and off for the last nine chapters,

  32. probably about as many years.

  33. In fact, if anything, we could say that David's written a textbook on fear

  34. and on how to deal with it.

  35. In Psalm 57, which he wrote while hiding in the cave at Adullam,

  36. he writes in his desperation,

  37. In the shadow of your wings,

  38. I will take refuge till the storms of destruction have passed.

  39. Or in Psalm 24, he writes,

  40. So he knows fear.

  41. But he knows that he can trust God to deliver him.

  42. So what's changed?

  43. Why has fear overwhelmed him now?

  44. We're not told.

  45. But I think there are two possibilities.

  46. The first is that Samuel is dead.

  47. We don't really know what interaction David and Samuel have had

  48. over the last few years.

  49. When Saul first tried to kill David,

  50. David fled to Samuel,

  51. but we don't hear of them together after that.

  52. But still, David would have been aware

  53. that there was this great prophet

  54. who had anointed him king,

  55. who was still around supporting him

  56. and praying for him.

  57. But Samuel is dead now.

  58. And maybe he feels that the promise died with Samuel.

  59. But the second reason,

  60. and I think probably

  61. most likely,

  62. is just that the danger has been going on

  63. for so long.

  64. He knows God's promises to him,

  65. but he's been waiting so long

  66. and his focus has slipped.

  67. It's dangerous for us to base too much

  68. on what the passage doesn't say.

  69. But I don't think it's insignificant

  70. that God is not mentioned once

  71. in this chapter.

  72. In all the chapters before and after,

  73. he's mentioned several times,

  74. frequently explaining David's motives

  75. or David seeking guidance from God.

  76. But in this chapter,

  77. God is not mentioned at all.

  78. That obviously does not mean

  79. he's not present

  80. and not active,

  81. but it does suggest

  82. that he's not at the forefront

  83. of David's mind.

  84. But,

  85. so instead,

  86. David takes things

  87. into his own hands

  88. and comes out

  89. with his own strategy.

  90. Because living in Judah

  91. under Saul

  92. has become so dangerous

  93. that David considers it safer

  94. to go and seek shelter

  95. with the Philistines,

  96. Israel's enemy.

  97. He goes by the logic

  98. that the enemy of my enemy

  99. is my friend.

  100. And it seems

  101. that Achish

  102. is willing to go

  103. by the same logic.

  104. Unlike the previous time

  105. that David had turned up

  106. on his doorstep

  107. as a lone fugitive

  108. and had to feign insanity

  109. to escape,

  110. this time he's coming

  111. with a large entourage.

  112. he's got 600 fighting men

  113. and their households.

  114. And Achish decides

  115. he can make use

  116. of a band of warriors

  117. with which they seem

  118. to share a common enemy.

  119. But we can already see

  120. that this is going wrong.

  121. In the last chapter,

  122. David said to Saul,

  123. they've driven me today

  124. from my share

  125. in the Lord's inheritance

  126. and have said,

  127. go serve other gods.

  128. Now do not let my blood

  129. fall to the ground

  130. far from the presence

  131. of the Lord.

  132. He knows he should

  133. not be going there.

  134. He knows that's not

  135. where he should be.

  136. When David

  137. was merely a boy

  138. fighting Goliath,

  139. everything was clear

  140. to him.

  141. These pagan Philistines

  142. were God's enemies.

  143. and here,

  144. he's basically entering

  145. into an alliance

  146. with the Philistines.

  147. He's been waiting

  148. so long for God

  149. to follow through

  150. on his promises,

  151. he's given up waiting

  152. and has turned instead

  153. to his own wisdom

  154. and cunning

  155. to save him.

  156. Waiting can be difficult,

  157. even for people like me

  158. that give the appearance

  159. of being so laid back

  160. all the time.

  161. I think there's

  162. a good reason

  163. why patience

  164. or long suffering

  165. is listed

  166. in the fruit

  167. of the Spirit.

  168. It's not natural.

  169. We naturally

  170. struggle

  171. to wait,

  172. especially

  173. when what we are

  174. waiting on

  175. is God's timing

  176. because as Peter

  177. would write,

  178. the Lord

  179. is not slow

  180. in keeping

  181. his promise

  182. as some

  183. understand slowness.

  184. I.e.,

  185. God's timing

  186. is not ours.

  187. God's plans

  188. are not ours.

  189. But there are

  190. so many things

  191. that we need

  192. to wait for

  193. in our lives.

  194. Each of our lives

  195. is different,

  196. the challenges

  197. are different,

  198. but for many

  199. of us

  200. there will be

  201. things that

  202. don't happen

  203. to the timing

  204. that we would

  205. like.

  206. We would like

  207. if things

  208. happen now

  209. to our

  210. timetable,

  211. but God

  212. asks us

  213. to wait.

  214. And maybe

  215. that waiting

  216. like David

  217. is full of fear,

  218. fear about

  219. health,

  220. about family,

  221. about employment.

  222. we want

  223. answers now.

  224. But God

  225. asks us

  226. to wait.

  227. And maybe

  228. there are

  229. things in our

  230. church that

  231. we need to

  232. wait for.

  233. We'd love to

  234. see this or

  235. that happen

  236. now.

  237. We'd love to

  238. see much

  239. greater impact.

  240. We don't

  241. want to keep

  242. working away

  243. and only

  244. seeing little

  245. fruit.

  246. But God

  247. asks us

  248. to wait.

  249. But waiting

  250. can wear us

  251. down.

  252. We can

  253. lose patience

  254. and decide

  255. to come up

  256. with our

  257. own plans

  258. and our

  259. own

  260. clever

  261. solutions.

  262. I'm not

  263. suggesting we

  264. should just

  265. sit back

  266. and wait.

  267. Let go

  268. and let God

  269. as the phrase

  270. was.

  271. Because we're

  272. called to

  273. action.

  274. We're called

  275. to fight,

  276. to wrestle,

  277. to endure.

  278. But are we

  279. fighting our

  280. battles,

  281. our gods?

  282. But I

  283. think we

  284. also struggle

  285. as the

  286. church Peter

  287. was writing

  288. to,

  289. in waiting

  290. for our

  291. future hope.

  292. Peter was

  293. writing in

  294. the first

  295. century to

  296. people who

  297. were then

  298. questioning,

  299. is this

  300. ever going

  301. to happen?

  302. heaven.

  303. And here

  304. we are,

  305. 20 long

  306. centuries

  307. later.

  308. And like

  309. most things,

  310. it seems to

  311. be something

  312. that the

  313. church has

  314. gone to

  315. two extremes

  316. on.

  317. Either

  318. it's front

  319. and centre

  320. in our

  321. thinking,

  322. almost to

  323. the exclusion

  324. of everything

  325. else.

  326. And life

  327. here is

  328. seen as

  329. no more

  330. than a

  331. waiting room

  332. for heaven.

  333. Or

  334. it's just

  335. something

  336. vaguely on

  337. the edge

  338. of our

  339. consciousness

  340. that doesn't

  341. really affect

  342. how we think

  343. about our

  344. day-to-day

  345. lives at

  346. all.

  347. I wonder

  348. if we're

  349. at risk

  350. here of

  351. getting caught

  352. up in the

  353. challenges of

  354. here and

  355. now and

  356. losing our

  357. perspective.

  358. I wonder

  359. if possibly

  360. that inhibits

  361. our evangelism.

  362. the promise

  363. and threats

  364. of future

  365. realities seem

  366. so distant

  367. that it's

  368. hard for us

  369. to reconcile

  370. them with

  371. the people

  372. that we meet

  373. around us

  374. day-to-day.

  375. It seems

  376. two very

  377. different

  378. things.

  379. But in

  380. Hebrews 11,

  381. which the

  382. first passage

  383. I ever

  384. actually spoke

  385. on,

  386. we read

  387. of how

  388. future hope

  389. shaped the

  390. lives of

  391. those who

  392. came before

  393. us.

  394. Because we

  395. read there

  396. that Abraham

  397. was looking

  398. forward to

  399. the city

  400. with foundations.

  401. His architect

  402. and builder

  403. is God.

  404. And all

  405. these people

  406. were still

  407. living by

  408. faith when

  409. they died.

  410. They were

  411. longing for

  412. a better

  413. country,

  414. a heavenly

  415. one.

  416. Therefore,

  417. God is not

  418. ashamed to be

  419. called their

  420. God,

  421. for he

  422. has prepared

  423. a city

  424. for them.

  425. They were

  426. living their

  427. lives here

  428. while waiting

  429. for what

  430. they knew

  431. was to

  432. come.

  433. I've been

  434. recommending

  435. the songs

  436. of Andrew

  437. Peterson to

  438. various people

  439. recently.

  440. And what I

  441. really like

  442. about them

  443. is they're

  444. so grounded

  445. in the

  446. joys and

  447. sorrows of

  448. life here

  449. and now.

  450. they're

  451. also filled

  452. with longing

  453. for something

  454. beyond.

  455. One of

  456. them says,

  457. And I

  458. know you

  459. hear the

  460. cries of

  461. every soul

  462. tonight.

  463. You see

  464. the teardrops

  465. as they

  466. roll tonight

  467. down the

  468. faces of

  469. saints who

  470. grow weary

  471. and faint

  472. in your

  473. fields.

  474. And the

  475. wicked roam

  476. the cities

  477. and the

  478. streets

  479. tonight.

  480. But when

  481. the God of

  482. love and

  483. thunder speaks

  484. tonight,

  485. I believe

  486. you will

  487. come,

  488. your justice

  489. be done.

  490. But how

  491. long?

  492. How long

  493. until the

  494. burden is

  495. lifted?

  496. How long

  497. is this the

  498. song that

  499. we sing?

  500. How long

  501. until the

  502. reckoning?

  503. And as

  504. our Bibles

  505. would finish

  506. in Revelation

  507. 22,

  508. with that

  509. cry,

  510. come Lord

  511. Jesus,

  512. as we

  513. wait for

  514. that which

  515. is to

  516. come.

  517. But before

  518. we go off

  519. on too

  520. much of

  521. that tangent

  522. from what's

  523. not said

  524. in the

  525. passage,

  526. let's get

  527. back to

  528. the passage.

  529. And

  530. taking

  531. most of

  532. the rest

  533. of the

  534. chapter,

  535. so from

  536. verse 5

  537. to 12

  538. in one

  539. section,

  540. and here

  541. we see

  542. that at

  543. first it

  544. seems that

  545. David's

  546. strategy has

  547. worked,

  548. because Saul

  549. gives up

  550. searching for

  551. him.

  552. His

  553. hatred for

  554. David isn't

  555. enough to

  556. push him to

  557. all-out war

  558. with the

  559. Philistines.

  560. But as we

  561. read on,

  562. we see that

  563. David's scheme

  564. gets more

  565. and more

  566. cunning,

  567. convoluted,

  568. and

  569. compromised.

  570. Firstly,

  571. we see

  572. David in

  573. apparent

  574. humility

  575. in

  576. verse 5,

  577. requesting

  578. that he's

  579. given a

  580. place in

  581. one of

  582. the lesser

  583. towns

  584. instead of

  585. in the

  586. royal city,

  587. making out

  588. that he's

  589. not worthy

  590. to be in

  591. the main

  592. city,

  593. along with

  594. the king.

  595. But when

  596. we look at

  597. how his

  598. deception

  599. develops,

  600. we realise

  601. this is not

  602. about humility.

  603. This is

  604. about distance.

  605. He wants

  606. to be

  607. somewhere

  608. close enough

  609. to be

  610. under the

  611. Philistine

  612. protection,

  613. but he

  614. wants to

  615. be far

  616. enough away

  617. that his

  618. comings and

  619. goings won't

  620. be watched.

  621. He wants

  622. to pull the

  623. wool over

  624. Achishud's

  625. eyes.

  626. And so he's

  627. given Ziklag

  628. that he

  629. uses as

  630. a base

  631. and he

  632. carries out

  633. raids from

  634. there.

  635. And this

  636. is where

  637. we start

  638. getting

  639. confused.

  640. Is David

  641. here carrying

  642. out raids

  643. against Israel?

  644. Against his

  645. own people?

  646. Surely not.

  647. But then

  648. when you

  649. read the

  650. passage

  651. carefully,

  652. you realise

  653. there are

  654. two accounts

  655. of what

  656. he's doing.

  657. In

  658. verse 8,

  659. read,

  660. So David

  661. and his

  662. men went

  663. up and

  664. raided the

  665. Geshurites,

  666. the Gerzites,

  667. and the

  668. Malachites.

  669. But then

  670. in verse

  671. 10,

  672. when Achish

  673. asked,

  674. where did

  675. you go

  676. raiding

  677. today?

  678. David would

  679. say,

  680. against the

  681. Negev of

  682. Judah,

  683. or against

  684. the Negev

  685. of Jeremiel,

  686. or against

  687. the Negev

  688. of the

  689. Canaanites.

  690. Verse 8

  691. says what

  692. David is

  693. actually doing.

  694. Verse 10

  695. says what

  696. he's reporting

  697. to Achish.

  698. The situation

  699. he's got

  700. himself into

  701. is one

  702. where he

  703. has to

  704. continually

  705. lie about

  706. what he's

  707. doing in

  708. order to

  709. remain

  710. welcome

  711. there.

  712. Because

  713. Achish

  714. believes he

  715. is raiding

  716. Israel,

  717. while actually

  718. he's raiding

  719. Israel's

  720. enemies.

  721. Now,

  722. it is

  723. possible

  724. that David's

  725. not strictly

  726. lying here.

  727. The

  728. Negev

  729. was the

  730. desert land

  731. to the

  732. south of

  733. Israel.

  734. Israel,

  735. and so

  736. it's

  737. possible

  738. that

  739. although

  740. this

  741. is

  742. within

  743. the

  744. borders

  745. of

  746. Israel,

  747. that the

  748. peoples he's

  749. raiding

  750. against are

  751. in that

  752. land.

  753. So maybe

  754. technically he's

  755. speaking the

  756. truth,

  757. but certainly

  758. he's intending

  759. to deceive

  760. here.

  761. in fact,

  762. the people

  763. that he

  764. claims that

  765. he was

  766. raiding,

  767. we actually

  768. will see

  769. later in

  770. chapter 30

  771. that he's

  772. giving the

  773. spoils of

  774. his raiding

  775. to them.

  776. He was

  777. raiding

  778. Israel's

  779. enemies,

  780. building up

  781. his support

  782. in Israel

  783. by giving

  784. them the

  785. plunder,

  786. meanwhile

  787. making Achish

  788. believe that

  789. he was

  790. becoming so

  791. obnoxious

  792. to Israel

  793. that the

  794. Philistines

  795. would have

  796. his loyalty

  797. for life.

  798. It's not

  799. exactly clear

  800. who the

  801. Geshurites

  802. and the

  803. Gerizites

  804. are,

  805. various things

  806. seem to

  807. suggest

  808. different

  809. things,

  810. but certainly

  811. the Amalekites

  812. are one of

  813. the peoples

  814. in the land

  815. that Israel

  816. should have

  817. wiped out

  818. when they

  819. entered the

  820. land several

  821. centuries earlier.

  822. Israel

  823. compromised

  824. and never

  825. completed the

  826. task.

  827. In fact,

  828. in the next

  829. chapter,

  830. one of the

  831. things that

  832. Saul is

  833. accused of

  834. is not

  835. destroying

  836. the Amalekites.

  837. So,

  838. is David

  839. doing right

  840. here?

  841. It's not

  842. totally clear,

  843. but certainly

  844. his motives

  845. aren't godly.

  846. His reason

  847. for total

  848. destruction

  849. is not

  850. because these

  851. are the

  852. enemies of

  853. God,

  854. or anything

  855. like that,

  856. but pragmatically

  857. so he can

  858. continue his

  859. deception,

  860. so they

  861. can't report

  862. back what's

  863. happening,

  864. so as to

  865. save his

  866. own skin.

  867. He's got

  868. himself into

  869. such a

  870. compromised

  871. position,

  872. and none

  873. of his actions

  874. seem clear

  875. cut.

  876. everything he

  877. does is

  878. tainted.

  879. It's so

  880. easy for us

  881. to compromise.

  882. It's so

  883. easy for us

  884. to look at

  885. the challenges

  886. we see

  887. around us,

  888. especially

  889. when God

  890. doesn't seem

  891. to act to

  892. our timetable,

  893. and come up

  894. with our own

  895. solutions.

  896. Sometimes we're

  897. willing to be

  898. flexible on

  899. what we believe

  900. to be right

  901. and wrong,

  902. because we

  903. think it's

  904. the best we

  905. can do

  906. under the

  907. circumstances.

  908. Yeah, we

  909. might know

  910. that technically

  911. our actions

  912. are wrong,

  913. but we

  914. don't think

  915. we have any

  916. other option.

  917. Have we

  918. forgotten God?

  919. Have we

  920. forgotten David's

  921. words that we

  922. read earlier?

  923. Many are the

  924. afflictions of

  925. the righteous,

  926. but the Lord

  927. delivers him

  928. out of them

  929. all.

  930. Or the words

  931. that we sang,

  932. where there

  933. seems to be

  934. no way,

  935. you make

  936. it possible.

  937. It's often

  938. interesting seeing

  939. how people's

  940. view on an

  941. issue changes

  942. completely when

  943. it affects them

  944. personally.

  945. They have

  946. very clear

  947. views on

  948. what's right

  949. and wrong.

  950. But when it's

  951. no longer an

  952. abstract issue,

  953. they're willing

  954. to come up

  955. with excuses,

  956. exceptions,

  957. mitigating

  958. factors,

  959. why it's

  960. okay for

  961. them.

  962. Now,

  963. part of

  964. this is

  965. probably a

  966. healthy

  967. developing

  968. of a

  969. nuanced

  970. view of

  971. the complexities

  972. of the

  973. issues,

  974. but all

  975. too often

  976. it's mere

  977. pragmatism.

  978. It suits the

  979. situation they

  980. find themselves

  981. in,

  982. and if that

  983. means they

  984. have to

  985. slightly revise

  986. their morality,

  987. so be

  988. it.

  989. But I

  990. think one

  991. question that

  992. must be

  993. asked is

  994. why is no

  995. one giving

  996. David advice

  997. here?

  998. Why is no

  999. one saying

  1000. to him,

  1001. I think you're

  1002. making a big

  1003. mistake?

  1004. Remember God's

  1005. promises.

  1006. You can trust

  1007. him.

  1008. Hold on in

  1009. there.

  1010. Surely among

  1011. all these people

  1012. he had with

  1013. him,

  1014. there was

  1015. someone that

  1016. would have

  1017. had the

  1018. nerve to

  1019. say something.

  1020. Certainly

  1021. Abigail doesn't

  1022. seem one

  1023. who's likely

  1024. to keep her

  1025. opinion to

  1026. herself.

  1027. In the

  1028. book that

  1029. some of us

  1030. read with

  1031. Alistair

  1032. recently,

  1033. side by

  1034. side,

  1035. one of the

  1036. things it

  1037. challenged us

  1038. to do was

  1039. to confront

  1040. each other

  1041. with her

  1042. sin.

  1043. Now,

  1044. that of

  1045. course must

  1046. be done

  1047. carefully,

  1048. sensitively,

  1049. unlovingly.

  1050. But have

  1051. we got

  1052. people around

  1053. us that

  1054. know they

  1055. have our

  1056. permission to

  1057. challenge us

  1058. when they

  1059. think we're

  1060. making mistakes?

  1061. Or do we

  1062. surround ourselves

  1063. with people who

  1064. will just

  1065. politely agree

  1066. with us and

  1067. tell us what

  1068. we want to

  1069. hear?

  1070. Do we have

  1071. people around

  1072. us that will

  1073. remind us of

  1074. God's

  1075. promises?

  1076. Who will

  1077. remind us

  1078. that he is

  1079. so much

  1080. more glorious

  1081. than anything

  1082. we could

  1083. possibly put

  1084. in his

  1085. place?

  1086. And so

  1087. we get

  1088. to

  1089. essentially

  1090. the end

  1091. of our

  1092. passage,

  1093. the first

  1094. couple of

  1095. verses of

  1096. chapter.

  1097. After all

  1098. this fear,

  1099. this compromise,

  1100. are we

  1101. left on a

  1102. downer?

  1103. Is there

  1104. anything

  1105. positive?

  1106. in the

  1107. first couple

  1108. of verses

  1109. of chapter

  1110. 28 here,

  1111. we see

  1112. just the

  1113. difficulty of

  1114. the situation

  1115. that David's

  1116. got himself

  1117. into.

  1118. After almost

  1119. a year and

  1120. a half,

  1121. the major

  1122. challenge

  1123. comes.

  1124. Dachish is

  1125. marching out

  1126. against Israel

  1127. and expects

  1128. David to be

  1129. there fighting

  1130. with him at

  1131. his side.

  1132. what's

  1133. David to

  1134. do?

  1135. Initially,

  1136. he digs

  1137. himself even

  1138. deeper into

  1139. the hole by,

  1140. in a rather

  1141. ambiguous manner,

  1142. pledging his

  1143. loyalty.

  1144. And Dachish,

  1145. who believes

  1146. the reports

  1147. that he's been

  1148. carrying out

  1149. raids against

  1150. Judah all this

  1151. time,

  1152. appoints him

  1153. to be his

  1154. bodyguard,

  1155. in a place

  1156. of honour,

  1157. but also a

  1158. place where

  1159. he can keep

  1160. his eye on

  1161. him.

  1162. David's not

  1163. going to have

  1164. an opportunity

  1165. to quietly

  1166. slip away,

  1167. or even go

  1168. over to the

  1169. other side

  1170. here.

  1171. But is

  1172. there any

  1173. hope?

  1174. Earlier

  1175. I said that

  1176. it's dangerous

  1177. to base too

  1178. much on what's

  1179. not said,

  1180. and in this

  1181. case there's

  1182. nothing in

  1183. this passage

  1184. to give any

  1185. hope.

  1186. But we'll

  1187. discover in a

  1188. couple of

  1189. chapters that

  1190. God does

  1191. intervene.

  1192. All this

  1193. time David

  1194. may have

  1195. been ignoring

  1196. God, but

  1197. God's not

  1198. been ignoring

  1199. him.

  1200. David may

  1201. have given

  1202. up waiting

  1203. for God,

  1204. but God

  1205. was still

  1206. going to

  1207. fulfil on

  1208. his promises.

  1209. As Paul's

  1210. devotion this

  1211. morning reminded

  1212. us, failure

  1213. isn't final.

  1214. And here

  1215. we see that

  1216. God gets

  1217. David out

  1218. of the

  1219. situation that

  1220. his own

  1221. foolishness had

  1222. got him

  1223. into.

  1224. And in

  1225. the meantime,

  1226. God has

  1227. continued to

  1228. bless.

  1229. In 1

  1230. Chronicles 12

  1231. we read of

  1232. all the

  1233. men who

  1234. came to

  1235. David while

  1236. he was at

  1237. Ziklag.

  1238. He started

  1239. with 600

  1240. men.

  1241. By this

  1242. point he's

  1243. got more

  1244. because they

  1245. keep hearing

  1246. about them,

  1247. they keep

  1248. hearing about

  1249. all he's

  1250. doing, and

  1251. they keep

  1252. coming to

  1253. him.

  1254. So his

  1255. army is

  1256. continuing to

  1257. grow, ready

  1258. for when it

  1259. would be

  1260. needed.

  1261. And one

  1262. day David

  1263. would sit

  1264. on the throne

  1265. of Israel

  1266. with a

  1267. glorious

  1268. reign.

  1269. And his

  1270. line would

  1271. be preserved,

  1272. and the

  1273. promised Messiah

  1274. would come

  1275. from it, and

  1276. we would be

  1277. here today.

  1278. He was a

  1279. fearful,

  1280. compromised,

  1281. broken man,

  1282. like the

  1283. rest of us.

  1284. But God

  1285. was faithful.

  1286. This wouldn't

  1287. by any means

  1288. be his last

  1289. mistake, or

  1290. even probably

  1291. his worst.

  1292. And yet God

  1293. could still

  1294. describe him

  1295. as a man

  1296. after my

  1297. own heart.

  1298. David may

  1299. have failed

  1300. repeatedly,

  1301. but he

  1302. came back,

  1303. and God

  1304. was still

  1305. there,

  1306. waiting for

  1307. him.

  1308. Because David's

  1309. the one who

  1310. would write

  1311. in the

  1312. psalm that

  1313. Graham

  1314. read for us

  1315. at the

  1316. beginning,

  1317. completely

  1318. unplanned.

  1319. as far as

  1320. the east

  1321. is from

  1322. the west,

  1323. so far

  1324. has he

  1325. taken our

  1326. sins from

  1327. us.

  1328. But also

  1329. in the same

  1330. psalm,

  1331. he knows

  1332. how we are

  1333. formed.

  1334. He remembers

  1335. we are

  1336. dust.

  1337. And so

  1338. as we go

  1339. from here,

  1340. let's not

  1341. be burdened

  1342. by our

  1343. regrets of

  1344. the past

  1345. and our

  1346. present

  1347. failures,

  1348. but let's

  1349. bring them

  1350. and leave

  1351. them at the

  1352. foot of the

  1353. cross,

  1354. knowing that

  1355. they have

  1356. been dealt

  1357. with there.

  1358. As we

  1359. head into

  1360. Holy Weekend,

  1361. the Easter

  1362. weekend,

  1363. let's make

  1364. extra special

  1365. effort to

  1366. take time

  1367. out to

  1368. remember what

  1369. we remember

  1370. every week,

  1371. in fact,

  1372. every day,

  1373. that we

  1374. have died

  1375. with Christ.

  1376. We have

  1377. been buried

  1378. with him

  1379. and we

  1380. have been

  1381. raised to

  1382. new life.

  1383. The waiting

  1384. may seem

  1385. a long

  1386. time,

  1387. but let

  1388. us have

  1389. confidence

  1390. in what we

  1391. have believed,

  1392. that Christ

  1393. has died,

  1394. Christ

  1395. has risen,

  1396. and Christ

  1397. will come

  1398. again.

  1399. And as

  1400. we wait,

  1401. let's pray

  1402. in the words

  1403. of our

  1404. final song,

  1405. Don't

  1406. Let My

  1407. Love

  1408. Grow Cold.

  1409. If someone

  1410. was to write

  1411. our biography,

  1412. would there

  1413. be chapters

  1414. in it where

  1415. God's not

  1416. mentioned?

  1417. As the

  1418. song says,

  1419. Don't

  1420. Let My

  1421. Love

  1422. Grow Cold.

  1423. I'm calling

  1424. out,

  1425. light the

  1426. fire again.

  1427. Don't

  1428. Let My

  1429. Vision

  1430. Die,

  1431. and calling

  1432. out,

  1433. light the

  1434. fire again.

  1435. Thank you.

  1436. Thank you.

  1437. Thank you.
