  1. Well, thanks, Stuart and Hannah. Folks, let me invite you to have that passage in Romans chapter 6 open in front of you.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  2. We're going to be dipping in and out of it this morning, and I've thoroughly enjoyed my time there this week,

  3. and I really hope and I trust that the Lord has something to teach us this morning as we turn to his word.

  4. So with Romans chapter 6 open in front of you, let's just begin this morning.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  5. I've been in theological circles now for over seven years, theological training circles,

  6. and I've spent time in different places. I've discovered that there's a phrase that people continually use wherever I go,

  7. and it's a phrase that I've come to understand is absolutely true, and it goes like this,

  8. and see if you maybe agree with this, it's that everyone's a theologian. Everyone's a theologian.

  9. So if we're describing, defining rather, theology as the study of God,

  10. then any time anybody engages in thoughts about who God is, really grapples with that, wrestles with that,

  11. and from that they think about the world in which we live, why is it the way that it is,

  12. and then they think about human beings, why is it that we are the way that we are,

  13. why is it that I am the way that I am. On some kind of level they're engaging in theology, right?

  14. Thoughts about who God is, and that means that your neighbor has thoughts about God, they're a theologian,

  15. and it means that your classmates and your colleagues, they have thoughts about God, they're theologians,

  16. and it means that your friends and your family have thoughts about God.

  17. The first minister has thoughts about God. Teresa May, as we've been thinking, has thoughts about God.

  18. The Hollywood actor has thoughts about God. The premiership footballer has thoughts about God.

  19. Everyone's a theologian. Everybody has thoughts about God.

  20. God. I've been thinking about that this week. I've been reminded of one of my favourite theologians,

  21. kind of on that theme, and he goes by the name of Bob, and his second name is Dylan.

  22. Anybody like Bob Dylan? What a voice. That is a unique voice, isn't it? Bob Dylan's voice.

  23. But he's one of my favourite theologians. I have no idea whether Bob Dylan was a Christian or not,

  24. is a Christian or not. I have no idea, but I do know that he's a theologian just like the rest of us.

  25. And you see that kind of come through in his songs, as he just observes the world and the things that are going on in the world,

  26. and he comments on it. You see it through his songs.

  27. And let me just show you some of the lyrics from a song that he wrote as he watched the way in which human beings live their lives.

  28. And it goes like this.

  29. You may be a construction worker working on a home.

  30. You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome.

  31. You might own guns and you might even own tanks.

  32. You might be someone's landlord. You might even own banks.

  33. But you're going to have to serve somebody.

  34. You're going to have to serve somebody.

  35. It may be the devil or it may be the Lord, but you're going to have to serve somebody.

  36. You see, what Dylan was observing is he's watching humanity and he's watching human beings and the way that they live their lives,

  37. the way that they spend their time, the way that they spend their energy, the way that they spend their money.

  38. What he's observing is that everything that we do as human beings is driven by something.

  39. The truth is we all serve somebody.

  40. Now, I wonder what you think about that.

  41. As Bob Dylan chucks it out there this morning, what do you think about that?

  42. It's very thought-provoking, is it not?

  43. We love to think in our world that we're free.

  44. We do what we want.

  45. Bob Dylan is saying we're all serving somebody.

  46. And it might surprise you to hear me say that the God of the Bible, the God who's made everything,

  47. the God who's made us in his image,

  48. the God who in his word he tells us what he's like,

  49. the God who in his word tells us what we are like,

  50. he would heartily agree with Bob Dylan.

  51. And we know that because of this passage this morning.

  52. And that's really its message, if you want to think about it like that,

  53. that everyone's following somebody.

  54. Everyone's following somebody.

  55. That's its message.

  56. The only question is, who is that somebody?

  57. And you see, if you've got the text there, Paul's opening question, verse 15,

  58. is very similar to that of verse 1 of chapter 6.

  59. For this is a continuation of the theme that we thought about last week.

  60. As we thought about the freedom that we have as Christians in Jesus Christ.

  61. That was a big theme of last week.

  62. Jesus Christ, who as it were, if you want to think about it like this,

  63. he's walked into the marketplace where we were there,

  64. chained to our wrists,

  65. responding to the orders being given by sin, our master.

  66. Just picture it like this.

  67. Sin was shouting orders at us,

  68. and our response was,

  69. yes sir, yes sir, three bags full sir.

  70. That was our response to sin as it shouted,

  71. because we were slaves of sin.

  72. And what happened is, Jesus in that marketplace

  73. walked up to our old master.

  74. He walked up to sin,

  75. and he said, see her,

  76. see him,

  77. I'll buy them.

  78. I'll buy them.

  79. And I won't give you three magic beans,

  80. I won't give you 30 pieces of eight.

  81. What I'll give you for them,

  82. is that I'll give you me.

  83. I'll give you my life.

  84. Because I'll pay with something far greater than money.

  85. I'll pay with my blood,

  86. I'll pay with my life.

  87. And he bought us,

  88. that's what Jesus did.

  89. He bought us.

  90. He bought us as he died for us on the cross.

  91. He paid with his blood to make us his own.

  92. And we are his.

  93. And we have newness of life in him.

  94. And we've been set free,

  95. and this is where,

  96. if you've made the link,

  97. this is why we read from the Exodus passage earlier,

  98. we've been set free,

  99. not to live for ourselves.

  100. God has rescued us.

  101. Why?

  102. To go wandering?

  103. No.

  104. To worship him.

  105. This is why we've been set free.

  106. Set free from something,

  107. set free for something.

  108. Set free to worship God,

  109. and to live for Jesus every day of our lives.

  110. And really, this passage this morning,

  111. Paul continues that thought.

  112. And what we see him say to the Christians in Rome,

  113. and what we see him say to the Christians of every day,

  114. which includes us,

  115. is that make your every day,

  116. make your every day,

  117. your every thought,

  118. your every motive,

  119. your every act,

  120. make it about obeying and glorifying

  121. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  122. who has bought you for himself.

  123. And so that's the pulse of this passage.

  124. And what we'll see is we'll see Paul make two statements

  125. as he tries to unpack this for his readers.

  126. Here's the first one,

  127. beginning at verse 15,

  128. and it's this.

  129. It's that everyone's serving someone.

  130. Everyone's serving somebody.

  131. Every human being who's ever existed,

  132. every human being who does exist,

  133. every human being who will exist,

  134. is serving someone.

  135. Now just think about that for a minute.

  136. Think about your life.

  137. What do you dream about?

  138. What do you dream about?

  139. What's the next goal on your radar?

  140. What's the next thing that's coming up?

  141. How are you thinking about that?

  142. What's going on?

  143. What in your mind,

  144. as you think about your life,

  145. what would need to happen

  146. in order for you to call it a success?

  147. Friends, if you start engaging with those kind of thoughts,

  148. if you start wrestling with those kind of questions,

  149. you'll begin to see who it is that you really serve.

  150. Because as far as God is concerned,

  151. that there's only two choices really.

  152. I mean, hear this text tell you

  153. that when it comes to who you serve,

  154. who you live for,

  155. the choice is not like a dual X color chart, okay?

  156. It's not like that.

  157. You're not looking at this thinking

  158. that I'm going to be duck egg blue today,

  159. I'm going to be magnolia tomorrow,

  160. and I might even be petal pink next week.

  161. This is who I serve.

  162. I've got the choice.

  163. No, no, no.

  164. God says if you want to play the game of thinking about it,

  165. who you serve,

  166. like a dual X color chart,

  167. think of it with a dual X color chart

  168. with only two colors on it.

  169. And it's black or it's white.

  170. That's it.

  171. Either, and this is true for all of us,

  172. we're serving ourselves,

  173. pursuing our own agenda

  174. and our own advancement,

  175. and therefore we're serving sin,

  176. or we're serving Jesus.

  177. And what we need to understand

  178. is that to serve self

  179. and to serve sin

  180. is what we do by default.

  181. Now, if you don't believe me,

  182. let me challenge you

  183. to try and go a week

  184. without sinning.

  185. Okay?

  186. Try and go a week

  187. without making a self-centered decision,

  188. without making a judgmental thought

  189. about somebody,

  190. without using self-defensive words.

  191. Try going a week without doing that

  192. and see how far you get.

  193. Because I think for all of us,

  194. we wouldn't even make it

  195. till lunchtime on day one,

  196. would we?

  197. Because we're slaves to sin.

  198. This is what we do.

  199. This is the way that we go.

  200. And that was true

  201. of the Christian pre-Jesus.

  202. Do you see what Paul says,

  203. verse 17?

  204. Do you see how we get those words?

  205. And look at it with me,

  206. because these are glorious words.

  207. But thanks be to God.

  208. This is what he says.

  209. Do you see it?

  210. But thanks be to God.

  211. Want to shorten it?

  212. But God.

  213. Now, I love it.

  214. I would love to write a series

  215. called But God

  216. and trace all the but gods

  217. throughout the Bible

  218. because there's tons of them.

  219. But this is the Bible's way

  220. of saying,

  221. here is the game changer.

  222. Something is about to change

  223. in regard to what it's telling us,

  224. what God is telling us.

  225. And what the but,

  226. thanks to God,

  227. says here

  228. is that you were running one way

  229. like we were singing

  230. in our last song

  231. and Christ got involved.

  232. Right?

  233. He got involved.

  234. He graciously intervened.

  235. He mercifully got involved.

  236. And he's transformed our fortunes

  237. if our trust is in him.

  238. And what did he do?

  239. Well, he changed us.

  240. And where did that change occur?

  241. Do you see it there?

  242. It changed in their hearts.

  243. This is the testimony

  244. of every Christian.

  245. There's been a heart change.

  246. God has performed heart surgery on us.

  247. Now, do you know why

  248. that is good news?

  249. Because this is where

  250. the problem is.

  251. This is where the problem is.

  252. This is what we find Jesus

  253. saying in the Gospels.

  254. It's not what goes into the body

  255. which makes it sinful

  256. and defiles it.

  257. It's what comes out of the heart.

  258. The problem is inward.

  259. Right?

  260. The problem is inward.

  261. So, Jesus,

  262. he's not just a surface level saviour.

  263. What this passage tells us

  264. is that he's not just into

  265. simplistic behaviour modification.

  266. What he's into

  267. is holistic life transformation.

  268. If you think about it,

  269. this is why it's so important

  270. that we know our Old Testaments,

  271. that Jesus isn't just

  272. this random bloke

  273. who's turned up onto

  274. the public scene in 30 AD

  275. and started doing stuff.

  276. This is a line of promise.

  277. Because this is what God said

  278. he would do.

  279. This was his covenant promise

  280. to his people,

  281. the one that we see him make

  282. through the prophets Jeremiah,

  283. and we see him make through

  284. the prophet Ezekiel.

  285. That he would move

  286. to do what his people

  287. could not do.

  288. And he would move

  289. to change their hearts.

  290. And how he would do that

  291. is that he would write his law

  292. right into their hearts.

  293. He would write it.

  294. It's there.

  295. It becomes his people's pulse.

  296. This is what they do.

  297. And God made this promise

  298. in the Old Testament.

  299. And he brings it to pass

  300. in the new.

  301. As he rescues

  302. his people

  303. through Jesus.

  304. And he empowers them

  305. to live for him

  306. through the work

  307. of his indwelling

  308. Holy Spirit.

  309. This is mind-blowing

  310. that God lives in us.

  311. His followers.

  312. He lives in us.

  313. He hasn't just set us free

  314. to go and do our own thing,

  315. to try and have a go

  316. on our own strength.

  317. He's given us the power

  318. to live for him.

  319. Gone is that heart of stone.

  320. And brought is that heart of flesh

  321. that beats for him.

  322. And you see what God

  323. has done here.

  324. He has written his word.

  325. He has written

  326. his life-giving word

  327. where?

  328. On our hearts.

  329. And that is,

  330. if you've got the text there,

  331. that is the pattern of teaching

  332. that Paul is talking about here.

  333. Do you see it?

  334. And what does that mean?

  335. It means that our lives

  336. as Christians

  337. should look increasingly

  338. word-shaped.

  339. Because this word,

  340. this living word

  341. has got under our skin.

  342. Right?

  343. Think Frank Sinatra.

  344. I love song lyrics.

  345. There's another one, right?

  346. I've got you where?

  347. Under the skin.

  348. This is where this word

  349. has worked.

  350. It's one,

  351. it's power.

  352. It's shown in our lives.

  353. And it's working away,

  354. renewing us

  355. day after day after day.

  356. Renewing our hearts

  357. and our minds.

  358. And what has it done?

  359. God's word has what?

  360. Claimed our allegiance.

  361. Love that phrase.

  362. It has claimed

  363. our allegiance.

  364. Or as Hannah read there,

  365. we have been entrusted

  366. to this pattern of teaching.

  367. I think if you've got

  368. an ESV there

  369. or a KGV,

  370. I'm sure as well,

  371. I think that translation

  372. probably captures it better

  373. because it talks there

  374. about being handed over

  375. to this pattern of teaching.

  376. And that verb there,

  377. handed over,

  378. is a passive verb.

  379. Nothing to do with us.

  380. Everything that's been done

  381. to us,

  382. that's what it means.

  383. In other words,

  384. we've been handed over

  385. to God.

  386. Now if you think about it,

  387. have you ever had the experience

  388. where you've moved

  389. into a new flat?

  390. Maybe a student,

  391. you've had that experience

  392. or you've bought

  393. your first house,

  394. you've moved into a house

  395. or whatever.

  396. You've moved somewhere different

  397. and you've signed the contract

  398. and you've had a word

  399. with the solicitor,

  400. the agent's happy,

  401. he's got his feet.

  402. And that day comes

  403. when you get the keys.

  404. Right?

  405. Think about that day.

  406. What do we call it?

  407. When you're handed the keys,

  408. what's that day called?

  409. Handover day.

  410. Never say that human beings

  411. aren't creative, right?

  412. How on earth

  413. did we come up with that one?

  414. It's handover day.

  415. And what Paul is saying here

  416. is that if you're a Christian,

  417. you picture yourself

  418. in that scenario.

  419. You're not the landlord,

  420. you're not the tenant,

  421. you're the set of keys.

  422. Right?

  423. You have been handed over

  424. to God.

  425. This is what he's saying.

  426. You have been handed over

  427. to God.

  428. He owns you now.

  429. He's in possession.

  430. And he's going to be the one

  431. that's choosing the furniture.

  432. He's going to be the one

  433. that's choosing the colours.

  434. And the blueprint for that

  435. is his word.

  436. As he moves into our lives,

  437. this is what it's going to look like.

  438. And as he transforms us,

  439. as he transforms us

  440. from the inside out,

  441. friends,

  442. there's going to be

  443. a noticeable difference.

  444. We'll come to love his word.

  445. We'll come to love worshipping him

  446. because he's transformed us

  447. from the inside out.

  448. Let me just say

  449. one of the greatest thrills

  450. for me in this job,

  451. and I wonder if you've had

  452. this experience before,

  453. is seeing people come

  454. to be Christians

  455. for the first time.

  456. Right?

  457. And you know what happens?

  458. You walk up to people

  459. and you say,

  460. listen to me,

  461. I love you.

  462. Do you want to read

  463. the Bible together?

  464. And they look at you

  465. like you're out of your mind.

  466. Why would I be interested in that?

  467. But they've got sympathy for you,

  468. so they entertain you

  469. and say,

  470. yeah, I'll do that.

  471. But as you get into

  472. that conversation,

  473. you realise,

  474. spiritually speaking,

  475. that the lights are not on.

  476. Right?

  477. And then something happens.

  478. Something happens.

  479. And sometime later,

  480. you go up to that person

  481. and say,

  482. would you like to read

  483. the Bible together?

  484. Would you like to read

  485. Romans together?

  486. And they say,

  487. do you know what?

  488. I've read it eight times already.

  489. Why have you done that?

  490. Well, I don't know,

  491. because one day

  492. Jesus wasn't all that

  493. big a deal to me

  494. and then all of a sudden

  495. my eyes were opened

  496. and I can't get enough of him.

  497. And you say,

  498. what has gone on there?

  499. What has happened?

  500. And do you know

  501. what's happened, friends?

  502. Is that God's got involved.

  503. And the truths of Romans 5, 6

  504. have become true

  505. for that person.

  506. Romans 5, 5,

  507. if you want to turn it back there,

  508. what does it say

  509. that God has done?

  510. He has poured

  511. his love

  512. into the hearts

  513. of his people

  514. through the Holy Spirit.

  515. He has poured that love

  516. into the hearts

  517. of his people.

  518. That's what's happened.

  519. And also,

  520. this has happened.

  521. Through the Holy Spirit,

  522. you have come to obey

  523. from your heart

  524. the pattern of teaching

  525. that has now claimed

  526. your allegiance.

  527. This is what's gone on.

  528. I didn't see it for years,

  529. but this is what's gone on.

  530. God has been so kind

  531. and gracious.

  532. And he's poured out

  533. his love

  534. into our hearts.

  535. And now we see

  536. the words of George Whitefield.

  537. When you have once

  538. tasted of his love

  539. and felt the power

  540. of his grace

  541. upon your heart,

  542. you will then love

  543. to talk

  544. and walk

  545. with Jesus.

  546. That's it, isn't it?

  547. Friends,

  548. everyone's serving

  549. someone.

  550. Paul says to the Christian,

  551. God's calling your life.

  552. God's calling your life.

  553. And she changes you

  554. is to live as slaves

  555. to righteousness.

  556. And here's the second thing

  557. that he says

  558. from verse 19

  559. is that everyone's

  560. going somewhere.

  561. From verse 19,

  562. again,

  563. he urges them

  564. to remember the...

  565. And do you see

  566. how he describes this?

  567. He describes it

  568. as the downward spiral

  569. of sin,

  570. if you like.

  571. That was their lives.

  572. That was what

  573. they were all about.

  574. Friends,

  575. that was maybe

  576. the path

  577. that some of you

  578. are on today

  579. without Jesus Christ.

  580. appeal to you

  581. through this verse

  582. to come to him

  583. in no life.

  584. But Paul is saying,

  585. pre-Jesus,

  586. we were on this

  587. downward spiral of sin.

  588. We were held captive

  589. and we were moving

  590. in the direction of,

  591. do you see it?

  592. Greater and greater

  593. lawlessness.

  594. We were drifting away

  595. from the God

  596. who made us.

  597. Let me just,

  598. as a wee sidebar here,

  599. let me just try and

  600. maybe tell you

  601. about something

  602. that was on my heart

  603. and as I cried

  604. as I was thinking

  605. about it this week

  606. and it surrounds

  607. this whole area

  608. of abortion.

  609. And as I've listened

  610. to people voice

  611. their opinions

  612. on social media

  613. and on the news

  614. and as I've read articles,

  615. it struck me

  616. that as a society,

  617. we've massively drifted

  618. from a time

  619. of rejecting it

  620. to questioning it

  621. to accepting it.

  622. and now as you watch

  623. what's going on,

  624. people are celebrating it.

  625. And it moves me

  626. to tears

  627. and let me just say

  628. that as a church,

  629. we don't want to be known

  630. as people who shout

  631. our nose unsympathetically

  632. from the sidelines.

  633. We want to take

  634. our God-given convictions

  635. about the beauty of life,

  636. every life that God

  637. has made in His image

  638. and we want to take

  639. those convictions

  640. as we walk alongside

  641. people in love

  642. and we say,

  643. let me love you,

  644. let me help you,

  645. let me step into

  646. your pain

  647. and your questions

  648. and your fears

  649. and together,

  650. let us help you

  651. find a better way.

  652. You know,

  653. I met up this week

  654. with the counsellor

  655. for Brunsfield

  656. and Morningside,

  657. just picking our brains

  658. on what are some

  659. of the ways

  660. that we can serve

  661. this community better

  662. as a church

  663. and she said

  664. the number one need

  665. that she perceives

  666. in our area

  667. is social isolation.

  668. people just don't

  669. know where to go,

  670. they've nowhere to turn,

  671. they've got no friends.

  672. Friends,

  673. maybe this morning

  674. you want to think

  675. about ways

  676. that we as a people,

  677. God's people here,

  678. can begin to speak

  679. into those situations

  680. and help.

  681. But back on track,

  682. Paul mentions

  683. what was going on

  684. before Christ got involved,

  685. that we were downward

  686. spiralling

  687. away from God

  688. in our sin.

  689. This is what was going on.

  690. Paul reminds them

  691. that this is what

  692. they used to be all about

  693. and the fruit

  694. of that old life

  695. was producing

  696. bad fruit.

  697. It was bad fruit.

  698. Bad fruit

  699. that went to show

  700. that they didn't know God.

  701. This was their previous life

  702. before Jesus got involved.

  703. You know,

  704. I got an email

  705. a few months ago

  706. from a teacher

  707. at my old school

  708. and she asked me to,

  709. because she found out

  710. I was a minister,

  711. she,

  712. I'm probably desperate

  713. as well to get people,

  714. she asked me

  715. if I'd be willing

  716. to come and speak

  717. at my school assembly.

  718. Now,

  719. see if I'd have thought

  720. about that,

  721. at 16 years old,

  722. sitting in that school

  723. I thought would have

  724. terrified me

  725. in front of 900 people.

  726. But sadly,

  727. I wasn't able to make it

  728. as I checked the dates.

  729. But thinking about my school,

  730. my old school,

  731. do you know what it did?

  732. It unlocked a whole host

  733. of memories in my mind

  734. that I think I'd forgotten.

  735. And as well as some

  736. really cherished ones

  737. about my time at school

  738. and my whole life

  739. around that age group,

  740. what it unlocked

  741. was a whole host of memories

  742. I thought,

  743. what on earth was I doing?

  744. And as I thought

  745. about the things

  746. that I used to do

  747. and as I thought

  748. about the way

  749. that I used to treat people

  750. and the things

  751. that I used to say,

  752. do you know,

  753. I was utterly ashamed.

  754. And presumably,

  755. that is what Paul

  756. is talking about here

  757. when he says,

  758. but by the grace of God,

  759. this is where

  760. your lives were heading.

  761. Do you see him

  762. say it there,

  763. verse 21?

  764. He says,

  765. as you think about

  766. your old life

  767. and the fruit

  768. that you were producing,

  769. are you not ashamed of it?

  770. I've never had

  771. those kind of moments

  772. when you think,

  773. goodness,

  774. but by the grace of God,

  775. where would I be?

  776. What would I be about?

  777. Where would I be running?

  778. And friends,

  779. we need to remember

  780. the previous chapter

  781. that's just come here

  782. in Romans,

  783. that we are saved

  784. by grace alone,

  785. through faith alone

  786. and Christ alone.

  787. We need to remember

  788. that Jesus has dealt

  789. with that old us

  790. on the cross.

  791. It doesn't have power

  792. over us anymore

  793. because he's taken it for us

  794. and praise him.

  795. That stuff doesn't

  796. hold us anymore.

  797. That's not what we're about.

  798. We are a new creation

  799. in Christ.

  800. Christ.

  801. And now,

  802. verse 22,

  803. because of the truth

  804. that we are Jesus's

  805. and the truth

  806. that the Spirit of God

  807. is working in us

  808. and he is pointing us

  809. day after day to Christ,

  810. that's his job,

  811. as we abide in Christ,

  812. we'll begin to see

  813. good fruit in our lives.

  814. See the other side

  815. of the coin here

  816. when Jesus got involved.

  817. Good fruit.

  818. And I think that's

  819. what Paul means

  820. at the end of verse 19

  821. and verse 22

  822. when he's talking

  823. about this new life path

  824. that God has his people on,

  825. the path that is marked

  826. holiness.

  827. This is what we're on.

  828. Some of your translations

  829. might say there's

  830. sanctification.

  831. This is the path

  832. that God has put us on.

  833. This is what he wants to see

  834. from the lives of his people.

  835. You know,

  836. we often talk as Christians,

  837. don't we,

  838. about knowing God's will

  839. for our lives.

  840. Ever ask that question?

  841. What is God's will

  842. for my life?

  843. And we normally use it,

  844. don't we,

  845. when we're thinking

  846. about big life decisions

  847. that we need to make.

  848. We've had a crossroads

  849. and we don't know

  850. what to do.

  851. You know,

  852. what job do I take?

  853. Where do I move?

  854. What place do I live?

  855. Who should I marry?

  856. What should I do?

  857. And in those moments

  858. we get frustrated,

  859. don't we?

  860. As we try and do it

  861. our own way

  862. and try and do things

  863. our own strength

  864. and saying,

  865. God,

  866. why are you not answering?

  867. What's going on?

  868. And we get frustrated

  869. and we remember

  870. to ourselves

  871. that we watched

  872. The Wizard of Oz

  873. when we were younger

  874. and we think about Dorothy

  875. and we thought,

  876. do you know what?

  877. I'll give this one a shot.

  878. God,

  879. would you show me

  880. the yellow brick road?

  881. Would you show me

  882. the yellow brick road

  883. and would you put people

  884. in my path

  885. who will be able

  886. to sing over me,

  887. here is the yellow brick road,

  888. here is the yellow brick road.

  889. There's times in life

  890. where we say,

  891. God,

  892. what is your will

  893. for my life?

  894. Well,

  895. friends,

  896. let me just say,

  897. not putting that aside,

  898. there are big things

  899. that we need to do

  900. but God has given

  901. the means by which

  902. we can make those decisions

  903. but God's primary will

  904. for our lives

  905. is caught up

  906. in this word,

  907. sanctification.

  908. Caught up in this word,

  909. sanctification,

  910. this lifelong,

  911. loving,

  912. transformational process

  913. that God has us on

  914. as his people

  915. through which

  916. he makes us

  917. day after day

  918. after day

  919. after day

  920. through every life experience

  921. more into the likeness

  922. of Jesus Christ.

  923. That's why the Spirit

  924. lives in us.

  925. Pointing us to him.

  926. That's God's primary will

  927. for our lives

  928. and it's amazing

  929. I find this in life

  930. when I'm at that crossroads

  931. and God just says,

  932. have you tried praying?

  933. I'm going,

  934. no,

  935. I haven't tried praying.

  936. What does God teach me

  937. all along?

  938. Was it patience?

  939. Yeah.

  940. Friends,

  941. the fruit of the Spirit

  942. in our lives,

  943. love,

  944. joy,

  945. peace,

  946. patience,

  947. godliness,

  948. fruitfulness,

  949. gentleness,

  950. self-control.

  951. What lovely words

  952. have you ever met

  953. a person in your life

  954. who just oozes

  955. those things?

  956. Oozes those things?

  957. I can think of people

  958. in my life

  959. who I've met

  960. over the years

  961. who've just

  962. modelled that to me.

  963. Do you know what?

  964. I love being around

  965. those people.

  966. Could be around

  967. the people all day.

  968. Keep on talking.

  969. Talk about the football.

  970. Talk about what you...

  971. Just keep talking

  972. because I just love

  973. to be around

  974. people like this.

  975. Friends,

  976. I just say,

  977. if you're younger here

  978. in this church,

  979. can I encourage you

  980. to get to know

  981. an older generation?

  982. Get to know

  983. the older generation.

  984. Just full of life experience.

  985. And do you know

  986. where they've got it from?

  987. They've got it from

  988. years and years and years

  989. of sitting at the feet

  990. of Jesus.

  991. Day after day

  992. after day

  993. sitting at his feet.

  994. I tell you,

  995. there was someone

  996. in this congregation

  997. I visited recently.

  998. I went to visit them,

  999. but do you know what?

  1000. I left feeling like

  1001. I'd be visited.

  1002. Because we see

1003. the fruit of the Spirit.

  1004. Friends,

1005. you know what I think

  1006. has occurred to me

  1007. this morning

  1008. that the ultimate example

  1009. of these things

  1010. is Jesus.

  1011. It's Him.

1012. It's Him that we seek.

  1013. It's Him that we're being

  1014. transformed more

  1015. into the likeness of.

  1016. Let me ask you

1017. just in some small way

  1018. this morning.

  1019. Do you see

1020. the fruit of the Spirit

  1021. growing in your life?

  1022. Do you see that?

1023. Do you want to see

  1024. more of that?

  1025. I do.

  1026. As God uses these

  1027. everyday circumstances

  1028. to mould us

  1029. more into His likeness,

  1030. to teach us

  1031. about our inadequacy

  1032. and to teach us

  1033. about His adequacy,

  1034. His all-sufficiency.

  1035. Friends,

  1036. what fruit are you

  1037. seeing in your life?

  1038. Because Paul would say

  1039. here that that fruit,

  1040. what you're seeing,

1041. is going to tell you

1042. a lot about the person

  1043. that you're serving.

  1044. Do you see it?

  1045. At the end here

  1046. at verse 23,

  1047. he talks about

  1048. the fact that

  1049. we're all serving

  1050. one of these two

  1051. very different masters.

  1052. And he mentions

  1053. the fact that

  1054. these two different masters

1055. are going to pay out

1056. at the end of the day

1057. in two very different ways.

  1058. Do you see it?

1059. I was thinking this week

  1060. about my first job

  1061. that I had when I was 16,

1062. before when I was still

  1063. at school,

1064. working at the local restaurant,

  1065. driving around

1066. in my family Ford car

1067. with the green P on the side,

  1068. thought it was

  1069. the B's knees.

1070. Do you know what I was earning?

  1071. I was earning £4.10 an hour.

  1072. Right, now remember

  1073. this was 2002,

  1074. so don't go calling

  1075. the authorities

  1076. after that one, okay?

  1077. But £4.10 an hour,

1078. this is what I was earning.

  1079. Loved it.

1080. But as I look back on that,

  1081. I think to myself,

  1082. what terrible pay

1083. for the amount of effort

1084. that I put into that job.

  1085. But do you see

  1086. what Paul says here?

  1087. If you've served sin,

  1088. if you've given yourself

1089. to sin all your life,

1090. see when it comes to payday

1091. at the end of your life,

1092. see when you total up

  1093. all those hours

1094. that you spent investing there,

  1095. sin your master

  1096. won't give you a gold watch

  1097. to mark your retirement,

  1098. right?

1099. It's going to pay out

  1100. in eternal death.

1101. This is what it's saying.

  1102. You know,

  1103. we hear Jesus,

1104. I was reading it this week,

  1105. Jesus in Matthew 25,

  1106. talk about the sheep

  1107. and the goats.

1108. This is what's going to happen

  1109. when he comes back.

  1110. Separate the world

  1111. into the sheep

  1112. and the goats.

  1113. One group,

1114. he will take his people

  1115. to be with him

  1116. in everlasting joy

  1117. and the other group

1118. will go to everlasting torment.

1119. The place that he talks about

1120. as the place of weeping

  1121. and gnashing of teeth

1122. doesn't sound great to me.

  1123. I don't know how it works,

1124. but it doesn't sound like

1125. a place I want me to be

1126. or want any of you to be

1127. or God wants you to be.

  1128. Friends,

  1129. words coming from

1130. the most loving human being

  1131. who has ever walked

  1132. this earth.

  1133. Whereas God,

1134. the one who made us

  1135. originally in his image

1136. and made us his own

  1137. in Christ,

  1138. his payday,

  1139. do you see it?

  1140. It won't be a wage,

1141. it will be a gift.

1142. One that we haven't earned

1143. and it will be a gift

  1144. called eternal life.

  1145. Heaven,

  1146. with him,

  1147. worshipping fully,

  1148. no more pain,

  1149. no more sickness,

  1150. just all out worship

  1151. of our glorious

  1152. three in one God

  1153. forever.

  1154. See,

  1155. these two masters

  1156. are paying out

1157. in two very different ways.

  1158. Friends,

  1159. let me just,

  1160. as we draw this

1161. to a close this morning,

1162. let me just ask you

  1163. to prayerfully consider today

  1164. who are you serving?

1165. What's your life all about?

1166. What are you living for?

  1167. Because,

  1168. do you know what?

  1169. You're going to have

  1170. to serve somebody.

  1171. You're going to have

  1172. to serve somebody.

1173. It may be the devil

1174. or it may be the Lord,

1175. but you're going to have

  1176. to serve somebody.

  1177. You know,

  1178. just as we close,

1179. what we've got into the habit

1180. of doing as a family,

1181. every night when we sit

  1182. around the table

  1183. for dinner together

1184. as we just ask this question,

1185. what was your best bit

  1186. about today?

  1187. Right?

1188. So I say to the girls,

1189. what is your best bit

  1190. about today?

  1191. And they normally say,

  1192. I met this.

  1193. They don't say,

  1194. I met this.

1195. They're not supposed to get it.

  1196. They say,

  1197. my friend Hannah,

  1198. that's the only one

  1199. that comes up.

  1200. Or we say,

  1201. go into the park,

1202. that was my best bit

  1203. about today.

  1204. But you know what?

  1205. As I've been thinking

1206. about this passage this week,

1207. it's urged me to ask myself

  1208. a different question

  1209. every day.

1210. But not at the end of the day,

1211. but at the start of the day.

1212. A similar but different question.

1213. Not what was the best bit

  1214. about my day,

  1215. but to ask myself,

1216. who will it be about today?

1217. Who will I serve today?

1218. Paul says in the second half

  1219. of Romans chapter 6,

    Romans 6 chapter mention

1220. to the Christians in Rome

1221. and to us this morning

1222. as God speaks to us

  1223. through his word.

  1224. Make your every day

  1225. about obeying

  1226. and glorifying

  1227. the saviour Jesus Christ

  1228. who's rescued you

1229. and bought him for himself.

  1230. So friends,

  1231. I realise we've touched

1232. on a lot of areas there,

1233. so I just want to give us

1234. a minute just to be quiet.

1235. And I urge you to just

  1236. pour out your soul

  1237. before our all-knowing

  1238. and all-loving God today

  1239. and then I'll close.

1240. But don't waste this opportunity

  1241. before the madness

1242. and the noise kicks off.

1243. Just use this moment of silence

1244. just to reflect your own heart

  1245. with God this morning.

1246. Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus.

1247. Just from sin and self to cease.

1248. Just from Jesus simply taking

1249. life and rest and joy and peace.

1250. I'm so glad I learned to trust him.

  1251. Precious Jesus, saviour friend.

1252. And I know that he is with me.

1253. He'll be with me to the end.

1254. Father, what an awesome God you are.

1255. And Lord, I just pray

  1256. for us this week,

  1257. whoever we are,

1258. Lord, you would teach us

1259. wonderful things about who you are.

1260. Lord, help us not to be about

1261. chasing the things of this world,

  1262. but help us

  1263. by your grace

  1264. to be those people

  1265. who are

  1266. all out

  1267. in pursuit

1268. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1269. So Father,

1270. we commit our hearts to you

  1271. this morning,

  1272. realising that there's

  1273. many of us here

  1274. from different experiences

  1275. and backgrounds.

  1276. And I pray, Father,

  1277. that you would,

  1278. by your spirit,

1279. continue to be at work

  1280. in our lives.

  1281. Father, thank you

  1282. that you love us.

1283. And so we pray all these things

  1284. in Jesus' precious name.

  1285. Amen.
