  1. Well, good morning, and let me say, as always, what a pleasure it is to be here and to have

  2. fellowship with you this morning.

  3. If you have your Bible, it would be great to have it open at Romans chapter 7, which

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  4. was read so well for us there.

  5. Thank you for that.

  6. I wonder if you ever take a detour, if you're making a journey.

  7. We were driving a few weeks ago down to Northumbria, and we drove the A1, and we saw a sign for

  8. St. Ab's.

  9. Now, I've never been to St. Ab's.

  10. I'd never actually heard of St. Ab's until I saw something on the BBC website a few weeks

  11. ago that it's been twinned with New Asgard from the Avengers movie.

  12. There were some scenes from Avengers Endgame, apparently.

  13. I haven't seen it, but filmed in St. Ab's, and the locals have made much of this, and

  14. they've got a sign saying, twinned with New Asgard, and what have you.

  15. So we thought, well, let's go and have a look at this.

  16. And we were delighted, not only to find that there were no evil aliens, but that it was

  17. a beautiful fishing town.

  18. And so we took a detour, and we were greatly blessed by the detour.

  19. And really, what we have in Romans chapter 7, verses 7 to 25, is something of a detour.

    Romans 7:7–25

  20. It's something of an excursus the apostle Paul makes in the flow of the book.

  21. He speaks about the old life under the law, and then into chapter 8, he'll talk about the

  22. new life into the spirit.

  23. But we have these verses, chapter 7, 7 down to 25, and they seem to interrupt the flow of

  24. thought from between 7, 6 and 8, 1.

  25. In fact, if you read chapter 7, verse 6, you can go straight on and read chapter 8, verse

  26. 1.

  27. But Paul interrupts his argument and introduces this subject here.

  28. So we want to ask the question, why he does that, and then what does he actually say in

  29. these verses?

  30. This is, I have to be honest, one of the most challenging passages in the New Testament.

  31. One of the commentaries I read said this is one of the most disputed passages in the New

  32. Testament.

  33. Martin Lloyd-Jones, if you read his commentary, has an entire chapter just about who the person

  34. in Romans chapter 7 actually is.

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  35. And I have to confess I was a little bit anxious about approaching this.

  36. So a couple of weeks ago I sat down to lunch with a friend who's got a PhD in Pauline theology,

  37. who's taught New Testament all around the world, and I said, I'm speaking in Romans chapter

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  38. 7 at Brunsfield in a couple of weeks.

  39. And he went, tricky.

  40. And that was it.

  41. So what we're going to do is we're going to take a sort of long run up, and we're going

  42. to do what you do in school, in maths, when you're not sure of the answer, you show you're

  43. working, and you hope the teacher will give you some credit for the working, even if your

  44. conclusion isn't right.

  45. Firstly, we're in the book of Romans.

  46. Thank you, Ewan, for pointing that out.

  47. You're studying Romans, and particularly Romans chapter 5, I believe through to verse 8 in

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  48. your series, The Christian Life.

  49. Romans chapter 5 to verse 8 is bookended by the subject of suffering and glory.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  50. Chapter 5, verses 2 and 3.

  51. We rejoice in the hope of the glory of God, and we rejoice in our sufferings.

  52. Romans chapter 8, verse 18.

    Romans 8:18

  53. I consider that the sufferings of the present time are not worth comparing with the glory

  54. that is to be revealed in us.

  55. So the Christian life is a life that will be characterized by suffering in the here and

  56. now and glory in the age to come.

  57. We live in this age, but we are people of the age to come, and therefore it's not unusual

  58. if in your Christian life you are facing trials and temptations of many kinds.

  59. We're often taught that as Christians we are to be victorious, we are more than conquerors,

  60. and all that is true, but we will suffer before we enter the glory that is to come.

  61. And in Romans chapter 5 through to verse 8, there are a series of contrasts we'll consider.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  62. In chapter 6, we have the contrast of life outside of Christ and life in Christ.

  63. In Adam, all die.

  64. In Christ, all shall be made alive.

  65. In Adam, we are under sin.

  66. In Christ, we are under grace.

  67. In Adam, we receive the wages of death.

  68. In Christ, the wages of eternal life.

  69. There are two men, two heads of humanity.

  70. And we do well to ask ourselves, well, which one am I under?

  71. Am I in Adam or am I in Christ?

  72. Christ comes to us offering the forgiveness of sins, offering new life in his Holy Spirit,

  73. offering eternal life.

  74. And he says, make your choice.

  75. Whose footsteps will you follow?

  76. When I drove here today, it was a bit of a round trip for various reasons.

  77. And I passed a lot of churches.

  78. A lot of churches open up.

  79. People going into churches, which is wonderful.

  80. You're in church this morning, but are you in Christ?

  81. Have you committed yourself to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  82. turning from sin, turning to him,

  83. and then accepting him as your Lord, your master and friend?

  84. So there is suffering before glory.

  85. There are two humanities.

  86. There is the humanity in Adam, the humanity in Christ.

  87. But now, chapter 6 tells us that we are free from sin.

  88. In Christ, we are forgiven and we are free.

  89. Chapter 6, verse 10, you have died to sin.

  90. Chapter 6, verse 18, you have been set free from sin.

  91. There is a change of employer, a change of master.

  92. No longer are we slaves to sin.

  93. Now we are slaves to God and to righteousness.

  94. And when we get to chapter 7,

  95. and I listened to the very helpful sermon last week by our brother Ian,

  96. Paul moves to speak about the law, the law of Moses.

  97. And this is a major topic in Paul's writings.

  98. It was a major issue in the first century,

  99. because the church consisted of Jews and of Gentiles.

  100. And the debate of that generation was,

  101. what is the relationship of the law of Moses to the gospel of Jesus Christ?

  102. And that provides the backdrop to so much of the New Testament,

  103. so much of the Acts of the Apostles,

  104. so much of Paul's writing, among others.

  105. I think it was Martin Luther who said,

  106. if anybody wants to be a theologian,

  107. they must seek to understand the relationship of the law to the gospel.

  108. And Paul seeks to explain something of that relationship here.

  109. He's already explained, beginning at chapter 2,

  110. that we are not justified by the law.

  111. We are not declared righteous in God's sight by our own observation of the law.

  112. Romans chapter 3, verse 20.

    Romans 3:20

  113. For by the works of the law,

  114. no human being will be justified in God's sight,

  115. since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

  116. And in chapter 7, beginning at verse 1,

  117. he says that as Christians, we are no longer under the law.

  118. We have died to the law.

  119. We have been set free from the law.

  120. The same language he was using of sin in chapter 6.

  121. And instead of being under the law,

  122. he will go on to argue in chapter 8 that we are now in the Spirit.

  123. Today is Pentecost,

  124. when the Lord first sent the Holy Spirit from heaven.

  125. And as Christians, we live in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  126. And Paul will next week,

  127. you'll probably see this more clearly,

  128. draw out that contrast between being under the law

  129. and being in the Spirit.

  130. And as we go into chapter 7, therefore,

  131. I want you to have that contrast in your minds.

  132. And it's particularly spelt out at the end of the passage we studied last week.

  133. Chapter 7, verse 5.

  134. When we were controlled by the sinful nature,

  135. literally the flesh,

  136. the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies

  137. so that we bore fruit to death.

  138. But now, by dying to what once bound us,

  139. we've been released from the law

  140. so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit

  141. and not in the old way of the written code.

  142. So I just want you to hold those verses in your mind.

  143. This week and into next,

  144. chapter 7, verse 5 is really a summary of our passage today.

  145. Chapter 7, verse 6 is something of a summary

  146. of what you'll study next week in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  147. It's like two sides of a coin

  148. where Paul describes the experience,

  149. firstly, of life under the law

  150. and then secondly, of life in the Spirit.

  151. Why then do we have this detour?

  152. Why then, from verse 7,

  153. does Paul introduce this parenthesis?

  154. And I think the reason is to reassure people

  155. that actually the law of God,

  156. the law given to Moses,

  157. the moral law,

  158. the Ten Commandments,

  159. are God's good gift to humanity.

  160. He's told them that they've died to sin,

  161. they're set free from sin.

  162. And we think, well, that's wonderful

  163. because sin's a ghastly thing, isn't it?

  164. It's a terrible, toxic, radioactive thing in our life

  165. that wants to destroy us and our relationships

  166. and harm us.

  167. And so we're glad to be dead to sin.

  168. We're glad to be freed from sin.

  169. But people might say, well, Paul,

  170. you're telling us that we've died to the law,

  171. that we've been set free from the law.

  172. Are you saying that the law itself is a ghastly thing?

  173. And Paul says, no.

  174. The law was given to Israel by God.

  175. In chapter 9, verse 4,

  176. where he says of the great privileges

  177. of the Jewish people,

  178. theirs is the adoption to sonship,

  179. theirs the divine glory,

  180. the covenants,

  181. the receiving of the law,

  182. the temple worship,

  183. and the promises.

  184. So the law is good.

  185. It's not able to save us

  186. or sanctify us,

  187. but the law is God's good gift

  188. to his people.

  189. Okay, so that's by means of introduction.

  190. So what I want to do now

  191. is just to look at this passage in two halves.

  192. Firstly, verse 7 down to verse 13,

  193. we'll consider the law and sin and death.

  194. And then verse 14 to the end,

  195. we'll think of the law,

  196. our sinful nature,

  197. and our disobedience.

  198. So verse 7, chapter 7.

  199. And what Paul seems to say here

  200. is a principle we see worked out

  201. in different spheres of life.

  202. So I live next to a bowling club.

  203. I have joined the bowling club.

  204. I've not been asked to play

  205. for the firsts in the bowling club,

  206. but who knows, one day.

  207. But recently, the bowling club had a problem

  208. because there's a fox in our street,

  209. and every morning the fox was digging up the green.

  210. And if you bowl,

  211. you'll know how obsessional bowlers are

  212. about the green,

  213. and how difficult it is to bowl

  214. if there's a giant hole in the centre of it,

  215. and your bowls keep dropping into the hole.

  216. And so the bowling club set up an electric fence.

  217. And they did it over a weekend,

  218. and it's just a thin wire,

  219. and it has a sign saying,

  220. electric fence, do not touch,

  221. and a picture of somebody being electrocuted

  222. in a ghastly way.

  223. And on the first day of the bowling season,

  224. we all turned up,

  225. and do you know what everybody was doing?

  226. They were touching the electric fence.

  227. The sign said, do not touch,

  228. and they all wanted to touch it.

  229. And that's what Paul is saying here.

  230. It's sin seizing the opportunity,

  231. produced in me every kind of covetous desire.

  232. Sin seems to come to life

  233. in the face of the law.

  234. He says a number of things.

  235. He says, firstly,

  236. that the law reveals our sin.

  237. It shows us God's character

  238. and his standards.

  239. In a sense,

  240. it shows us his holiness

  241. and our sinfulness.

  242. One of the great reformed confessions of faith

  243. says this,

  244. although believers are not under the law,

  245. it is of great use to them

  246. as well as to others,

  247. in that as a rule of life

  248. informing them of the will of God

  249. and their duty,

  250. it directs and binds them

  251. to walk accordingly,

  252. discovering also the sinful pollutions

  253. of their nature,

  254. hearts,

  255. and lives.

  256. The law tells us

  257. what is wrong.

  258. I parked in Broughton Street

  259. a couple of weeks ago

  260. to buy a steak pie.

  261. I went to the machine.

  262. The machine didn't accept my money.

  263. I thought,

  264. happy days.

  265. I'm outside the parking restrictions.

  266. I bought the pie.

  267. I was delighted.

  268. I sat down in the car.

  269. There was a parking ticket

  270. on the windscreen.

  271. And I got out the car

  272. and there was a chef

  273. from a local restaurant.

  274. He said,

  275. if you'd read the sign,

  276. you wouldn't have got

  277. the parking ticket.

  278. The law reveals our sin.

  279. We might not realize

  280. anything is wrong

  281. until we look at the law of God.

  282. Paul did not realize

  283. coveting,

  284. being jealous of others

  285. was wrong

  286. until God's word

  287. told him so.

  288. And that's often the case,

  289. isn't it?

  290. We can live

  291. outside of Christ

  292. and we just go with the flow.

  293. We just live like everybody else.

  294. We don't think

  295. there's a problem

  296. with drinking to excess.

  297. We don't think

  298. there's a problem

  299. with gossiping

  300. or slandering people

  301. in your workplace

  302. or telling crude jokes.

  303. We don't think

  304. there's a problem

  305. living together with someone

  306. without being married.

  307. And yet when we come

  308. to God's word,

  309. we begin to recognize

  310. that these things fall short

  311. of the glory of God

  312. and the Lord has something

  313. better in mind for us.

  314. The law reveals

  315. where we fall short.

  316. And that was the habit

  317. of John Wesley,

  318. you know,

  319. the 18th century preacher

  320. who traveled around

  321. and preached all through

  322. the United Kingdom.

  323. And he would go

  324. to a town

  325. and begin to preach

  326. in the open air.

  327. And he explained

  328. to somebody

  329. with a marvelous name,

  330. he wrote a letter

  331. to somebody called

  332. Ebenezer Blackwell,

  333. and I had to double take.

  334. I thought it was

  335. Ebenezer Blackadder,

  336. but it's an old letter

  337. and Ebenezer Blackwell.

  338. And he explained

  339. how he uses the law

  340. and the proclamation

  341. of the gospel.

  342. John Wesley said this,

  343. I think the right method

  344. of preaching is this,

  345. after a general declaration

  346. of the love of God

  347. to sinners

  348. and his willingness

  349. that they should be saved,

  350. to preach the law

  351. in the strongest,

  352. the closest,

  353. the most searching

  354. manner possible,

  355. after more and more

  356. persons have convinced

  357. of sin,

  358. we may mix more

  359. and more of the gospel

  360. in order to beget faith,

  361. to raise unto spiritual life

  362. those whom the law

  363. hath reign.

  364. So John Wesley realized

  365. that if people are

  366. to come to Christ,

  367. the friend of sinners,

  368. they need to be shown

  369. their sin.

  370. And he said,

  371. well, the law of God

  372. shows us their sin.

  373. The law that tells us

  374. that stealing is wrong,

  375. deception, lying is wrong,

  376. coveting is wrong.

  377. The law reveals sin.

  378. But secondly,

  379. the law provokes sin,

  380. verses 8 to 12.

  381. The world laughs about sin

  382. and considers it

  383. just a bit of fun.

  384. But Paul says

  385. it's deadly serious.

  386. Sin is aroused by the law,

  387. it springs to life,

  388. and it kills him.

  389. Verse 11,

  390. sin seized the opportunity,

  391. deceived me,

  392. and through the commandment

  393. put me to death.

  394. There is something in us,

  395. in our sinful nature,

  396. that wants to break God's law.

  397. Because sin is a rebellion

  398. against God

  399. when we come up against God's law

  400. and his claims in our life,

  401. we want to push against it,

  402. we want to rebel against it.

  403. If you've ever been to hospital

  404. for an MRI scan,

  405. you'll know that they're

  406. very particular

  407. that you don't have

  408. any metal work on your body.

  409. You take out your earrings

  410. or whatever it is,

  411. your watch.

  412. And the reason is

  413. the magnetic scan,

  414. the MRI scan,

  415. is a gigantic magnet

  416. and it creates

  417. an enormous magnetic field.

  418. And if there's anything

  419. internally made of metal,

  420. it'll pull it out

  421. and cause all sorts of damage.

  422. Apologies there,

  423. I should have given you a warning.

  424. But Paul is saying

  425. it's a bit like that

  426. with sin and the law.

  427. We have this sinful nature

  428. and when it comes

  429. into the presence

  430. of God's law,

  431. it's sort of aroused

  432. and activated

  433. and it begins to act

  434. and move within us

  435. and to cause terrible harm

  436. in our lives.

  437. The law provokes sin

  438. but is itself holy

  439. and the commandment good.

  440. I suppose an analogy of that

  441. would be adolescence,

  442. teenager,

  443. difficult time.

  444. I recall being a teenager

  445. a long time ago now,

  446. but it was a difficult time

  447. and there was always

  448. that pressure, wasn't there,

  449. to break the law.

  450. You're told that you're not

  451. allowed to drink

  452. till you're 18

  453. or smoke till you're 16

  454. or drive a car

  455. till you're 17

  456. and even then

  457. under the speed limit.

  458. And yet people always wanted

  459. to do these things,

  460. to break the law,

  461. to do things

  462. they weren't to do.

  463. So it is with sin

  464. and God's law.

  465. The law comes,

  466. the magnet is switched on

  467. and our sin is awoken

  468. and seeks to be provoked

  469. into life.

  470. So the law reveals our sin.

  471. The law provokes our sin

  472. and finally,

  473. verse 13,

  474. the law condemns our sin

  475. in order that sin

  476. might be recognized

  477. as sin it produced death in me

  478. through hope was good

  479. so that through the commandment

  480. sin might become utterly sinful.

  481. God declares his verdict

  482. on sin through his law.

  483. And so it's not a pretty picture.

  484. Chapter 7, verse 11

  485. really summarizes

  486. this relationship of the law

  487. to sin and death.

  488. Sin, seizing the opportunity

  489. afforded by the law,

  490. deceived me

  491. and through the commandment

  492. put me to death.

  493. We think of the Garden of Eden,

  494. Adam and Eve

  495. in their innocence,

  496. sin entering the world,

  497. deception,

  498. the serpent deceiving them

  499. into sin

  500. and through his deception

  501. death came to all.

  502. Sin seizes the opportunity

  503. to deceive us

  504. and to put us to death.

  505. We need to remember that,

  506. don't we,

  507. if we're tempted,

  508. particularly if we're tempted

  509. into falling to

  510. very serious or public sin.

  511. Sin promises

  512. very great things

  513. and yet it doesn't deliver.

  514. Sin promises joy

  515. and brings us sorrow.

  516. It plays us for a fool.

  517. The evil one wants to deceive us

  518. and then to see us die.

  519. The law reveals sin.

  520. The law provokes sin

  521. and the law condemns sin,

  522. showing it to be utterly sinful.

  523. And so that seems to be

  524. what Paul is getting at

  525. in verses 7

  526. down to verse 13.

  527. And as we enter

  528. verse 14,

  529. we come to the second part,

  530. this much disputed part

  531. of the letter.

  532. And what happens here

  533. is Paul seems to move

  534. to speaking about himself

  535. in the first person

  536. instead of talking

  537. about past tense,

  538. he starts to speak

  539. of himself

  540. in the present tense.

  541. And the great dispute

  542. therefore is,

  543. is Paul talking about

  544. his life

  545. before he was a Christian,

  546. as a Jewish believer

  547. seeking to keep the law,

  548. or is Paul speaking

  549. of his present experience

  550. as a Christian,

  551. somebody seeking

  552. to glorify God

  553. and yet battling

  554. with sin?

  555. There is a story told

  556. of Alexander White

  557. who was the minister

  558. in what is now

  559. Charlotte Chapel,

  560. it was St Andrew's West

  561. in Shandwick Place there.

  562. And he was a very famous

  563. preacher in Edinburgh

  564. back in the day

  565. and he was friendly

  566. with a Christian publisher.

  567. And whenever a commentary

  568. on Romans was published,

  569. they would inform

  570. Alexander White,

  571. he would come

  572. and have a look

  573. and he would turn

  574. to Romans chapter 7

    Romans 7:14

  575. verse 14

  576. and he said

  577. if the person

  578. describes Paul

  579. before he is converted,

  580. I close the book

  581. and I put it back

  582. on the shelf.

  583. And he was very decided

  584. in his own mind

  585. what the right answer was.

  586. I would say

  587. we have to be

  588. a little bit more humble

  589. than that.

  590. There are lots of people

  591. who would argue

  592. this is Paul's experience

  593. when he was unregenerate,

  594. before he was a Christian,

  595. as he sought to live

  596. by the law.

  597. There are others

  598. who would say

  599. this is Paul

  600. the regenerate man,

  601. Paul the Christian

  602. struggling as we all

  603. struggle in the Christian life.

  604. There are great

  605. and godly people

  606. on both sides

  607. of that debate.

  608. And there's a very helpful

  609. summary of both sides

  610. of it.

  611. In fact,

  612. the Gospel Coalition

  613. website,

  614. they invited John Piper

  615. and Tom Schreiner

  616. to godly New Testament

  617. scholar and preacher

  618. to give their side

  619. of the debate.

  620. And if you're interested,

  621. perhaps you could read

  622. that after lunch.

  623. But suffice to say,

  624. what I'm going to do

  625. today is to try

  626. and explore that

  627. a little bit

  628. and then present

  629. my own conclusion,

  630. which thankfully

  631. is the same as John Stott's.

  632. And I'm going to hide

  633. a little bit,

  634. therefore,

  635. behind John Stott.

  636. But what we want to see

  637. is as Paul describes

  638. his experience

  639. in these verses,

  640. there's a lot of repetition.

  641. He really says

  642. the same thing twice,

  643. 14 to 18,

  644. and then 19 to 24.

  645. The nub of it

  646. is that Paul wants

  647. to do what is right,

  648. but he has not the ability

  649. to carry it out.

  650. He delights in the law of God

  651. and yet is captive

  652. to the law of sin

  653. that dwells among

  654. his members.

  655. Verse 15,

  656. I do not do

  657. what I want to do,

  658. but the very thing I hate.

  659. Verse 20,

  660. now if I do

  661. what I do not want,

  662. it is no longer

  663. I who do it,

  664. but sin that dwells

  665. in me.

  666. There is this tension,

  667. this conflict

  668. in his writing.

  669. Those who say

  670. this is a regenerate person,

  671. that this is Paul

  672. as a Christian,

  673. have to reckon

  674. with the language

  675. he uses of himself.

  676. Could someone

  677. who's a Christian

  678. say,

  679. well,

  680. I'm of the flesh,

  681. I'm sold under sin,

  682. I'm captive to the law of sin,

  683. I'm a wretched man,

  684. and they say,

  685. well,

  686. that's not true

  687. of the believer,

  688. and so this must be

  689. Paul's experience

  690. before he was a Christian.

  691. But others would say,

  692. well,

  693. could the unregenerate person,

  694. could the person

  695. still living in sin

  696. say,

  697. I delight in my mind

  698. and the law of God?

  699. Do we not rebel instead

  700. against the law of God?

  701. So there are long

  702. and interesting debates

  703. on either side.

  704. But what I want to do

  705. is just read to you

  706. what John Stott says,

  707. and I want to try

  708. and persuade you

  709. that I think

  710. that's where he's coming from.

  711. I'm not going to be

  712. dogmatic about this.

  713. You know,

  714. if you want to talk over lunch,

  715. we can talk over lunch,

  716. but I think

  717. what we'll find

  718. is whatever our interpretation,

  719. the application

  720. is in the main

  721. the same,

  722. and that's important

  723. to us.

  724. But John Stott

  725. says this,

  726. the three salient features

  727. of the person

  728. portrayed in these verses

  729. are that he or she

  730. loves the law

  731. and therefore

  732. is regenerate,

  733. is still a slave

  734. of sin

  735. and therefore

  736. is not a liberated

  737. Christian

  738. and knows nothing

  739. of the Holy Spirit

  740. and therefore

  741. is not a New Testament

  742. believer.

  743. who then

  744. is this

  745. extraordinary person?

  746. It seems accurate

  747. to describe

  748. pre-Pentecost believers

  749. in terms of

  750. love for the law

  751. but lack of the Spirit

  752. and he goes on

  753. to explain

  754. what that might mean.

  755. So,

  756. let me explain

  757. a little bit.

  758. When Paul

  759. went to Ephesus,

  760. he found believers,

  761. didn't he,

  762. who knew the baptism

  763. of John

  764. and he said,

  765. have you received

  766. the Holy Spirit?

  767. And they said,

  768. we didn't even know

  769. there was a Holy Spirit.

  770. They'd been taught

  771. by Apollos

  772. who knew

  773. only the name

  774. of Jesus.

  775. And there seems

  776. to be in the

  777. first century church

  778. therefore

  779. these earnest,

  780. these God-fearing

  781. Jewish people

  782. who knew the law

  783. and desired

  784. to serve the Lord

  785. and yet were unable

  786. to do so

  787. because of their sin.

  788. They had not yet

  789. been born again,

  790. liberated,

  791. cleansed

  792. by the Holy Spirit.

  793. And it's perhaps

  794. that kind of person

  795. that Paul

  796. has in mind,

  797. somebody who delights

  798. like the psalmist,

  799. who delights

  800. in the law of God

  801. but is impotent

  802. to keep that law

  803. because of their sin.

  804. And I think

  805. the argument

  806. for that

  807. is that

  808. in Romans chapter 7

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  809. there is no mention

  810. of the work

  811. of the Holy Spirit

  812. in this person's life

  813. whether it's Paul

  814. or whether he's dramatizing

  815. somebody else's speech.

  816. There is no mention

  817. of the Spirit.

  818. That has to wait

  819. until chapter 8.

  820. So does this therefore

  821. represent an earlier period

  822. in somebody's life

  823. where while they're

  824. struggling with sin,

  825. they're convicted of sin

  826. but they haven't yet

  827. come to newness of life

  828. in Christ.

  829. And chapter 8

  830. as you'll go on to see

  831. talks about the contrast

  832. between these two ways

  833. of living.

  834. Through Christ Jesus

  835. the law of the Spirit

  836. of life

  837. has set you free

  838. from the law

  839. of sin

  840. and death.

  841. Those who live

  842. according to the sinful nature

  843. have their minds set

  844. on what the flesh

  845. or the sinful nature

  846. desires

  847. but those who live

  848. in accordance

  849. with their spirit

  850. have their minds set

  851. on what the Spirit

  852. desires.

  853. So Romans chapter 7

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  854. talks as we've considered

  855. of the law

  856. of sin

  857. and death.

  858. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  859. talks about the law

  860. of the Spirit

  861. of life.

  862. And there is the contrast

  863. therefore

  864. between living

  865. in the flesh

  866. and living

  867. according to the Holy Spirit.

  868. And I think

  869. the reason

  870. these passages

  871. in chapter 7

  872. resonate so much

  873. with us

  874. and people say

  875. well Paul's obviously

  876. talking as a Christian

  877. is because that is

  878. so often our experience

  879. isn't it?

  880. As Christians

  881. we want to know

  882. the Lord

  883. we want to love

  884. the Lord

  885. and grow in our faith

  886. we want to obey Him

  887. because of our love

  888. for Him

  889. and yet so often

  890. we find ourselves

  891. falling back

  892. into sinful ways

  893. and patterns

  894. of behaviour.

  895. The Christian life

  896. is

  897. as Romans 8

  898. will go on

  899. to tell you

  900. next week

  901. a struggle

  902. between the flesh

  903. and the spirit.

  904. The Christian life

  905. is a battle.

  906. Paul speaks

  907. of the Christian life

  908. the good fight

  909. of faith.

  910. We battle

  911. against the world

  912. with its competing

  913. ideologies

  914. that deny

  915. the Lord.

  916. We battle

  917. against the devil

  918. with his supernatural

  919. opposition

  920. to the kingdom

  921. of God

  922. and we battle

  923. against the flesh

  924. seeking to draw us

  925. back into the ways

  926. of sin.

  927. Elsewhere

  928. Paul says

  929. in Galatians

  930. the flesh desires

  931. what is contrary

  932. to the spirit

  933. and the spirit

  934. what is contrary

  935. to the flesh.

  936. So we see that

  937. don't we?

  938. In different ways

  939. in our lives

  940. we see it

  941. perhaps most clearly

  942. in those believers

  943. who are battling

  944. addiction

  945. trying to give up

  946. smoking

  947. trying to give up

  948. drinking

  949. trying to give up

  950. drugs

  951. eagerly desiring

  952. to be free

  953. to be dry

  954. to be clean

  955. and yet repeatedly

  956. falling back

  957. into the old ways.

  958. We see it

  959. in our speech

  960. I would love

  961. to say

  962. kind

  963. encouraging

  964. wise things

  965. to everyone

  966. I meet

  967. that so often

  968. we fall back

  969. don't we

  970. into cynicism

  971. sarcasm

  972. slander

  973. gossip

  974. it would be great

  975. to be able

  976. to exercise

  977. self-control

  978. eating

  979. or drinking

  980. but

  981. you know

  982. we go to

  983. somebody's house

  984. and the cakes

  985. just look so delicious

  986. and we keep going

  987. back for more

  988. and more

  989. or when we drive

  990. past the fast food

  991. outlet

  992. and the tummy

  993. begins to rumble

  994. we just

  995. oh

  996. I just don't want to

  997. do it

  998. and yet I do it

  999. maybe you want to

  1000. cut down

  1001. how long you spend

  1002. on the internet

  1003. what you look at

  1004. on the internet

  1005. the hours perhaps

  1006. playing addictive

  1007. video games

  1008. and yet when you're

  1009. a bit tired

1010. or feeling a bit low

  1011. after a hard hit

  1012. college or the office

  1013. you find yourself

  1014. being drawn back

  1015. to the screen

  1016. I want to stop

  1017. being so angry

1018. and yet time and again

  1019. I just find myself

  1020. losing my rag

  1021. I want to stop

  1022. being so ungrateful

  1023. and coveting

  1024. what other people

  1025. have

  1026. their homes

  1027. their lifestyle

  1028. their relationships

  1029. their possessions

1030. I just want to be

  1031. content as a Christian

  1032. and yet again

  1033. and again

  1034. I find myself

  1035. being bitter

  1036. and jealous

  1037. and disappointed

  1038. every day

  1039. in the Christian life

  1040. is a conflict

  1041. between the flesh

  1042. and the spirit

  1043. and I think

  1044. that's why people

  1045. see that conflict

  1046. in Romans chapter 7

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  1047. and they say

  1048. well that's Paul's

  1049. experience

  1050. and I don't doubt

  1051. that it was Paul's

  1052. experience

  1053. but I think what

  1054. we understand

  1055. as the spiritual

  1056. struggle

  1057. is the struggle

  1058. of Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1059. and not necessarily

  1060. the struggle

  1061. of Romans 7

  1062. a sort of

  1063. God-fearing Jew

  1064. eagerly desiring

  1065. to keep the law

  1066. and yet finding

  1067. that he cannot

  1068. and therefore instead

  1069. needing to call out

  1070. for Christ

  1071. who will deliver him

  1072. from his body

  1073. of death

  1074. but it's good

  1075. to be aware

  1076. of that struggle

  1077. as Paul was aware

  1078. of that struggle

  1079. maybe you're here

  1080. as a new Christian

  1081. maybe a student

  1082. or a young adult

  1083. maybe you've come up

  1084. through the dime club

  1085. and you've been told

  1086. that it's a wonderful

1087. thing to be a Christian

  1088. and it is

1089. and you've come to faith

  1090. and you've come to

  1091. appreciate the love

1092. of God in your life

1093. to know a newfound peace

  1094. to know a joy

  1095. in your circumstances

  1096. and yet very quickly

  1097. you run into trouble

  1098. and difficulty

  1099. and there's trial

  1100. and there's temptation

  1101. and there's testing

  1102. and you think

  1103. well I didn't recognize

1104. this was going to happen

1105. and yet the New Testament

  1106. is very honest

  1107. that as we seek

1108. to live by the Spirit

  1109. of God

1110. we also have to put

  1111. to death

  1112. the deeds

  1113. of the flesh

  1114. and we will battle

  1115. temptations

  1116. and sins

  1117. and harmful

  1118. patterns of behavior

  1119. until Christ comes

  1120. to take us home

  1121. maybe you're a mature Christian

1122. I'm sure many of you

  1123. have been walking

  1124. with the Lord

  1125. for many many decades

  1126. perhaps longer than

  1127. I've even been alive

  1128. and you know

  1129. as a mature Christian

  1130. you've been fighting sin

  1131. and there's been victories

  1132. in your life

1133. and there are some things

  1134. you've laid to rest

1135. and yet there are other things

  1136. other patterns of behavior

  1137. thought or speech

  1138. or deeds

1139. that just seem to linger

  1140. that seem to be

  1141. besetting sins

  1142. thorns driven

  1143. into your flesh

  1144. and maybe you feel

  1145. like the Apostle Paul

  1146. who will rescue me

1147. from this body of death

  1148. and the good news

  1149. of the Gospel

  1150. is that Christ

  1151. will come

  1152. to rescue us

  1153. we live between

  1154. his first

  1155. and his second

  1156. appearing

1157. one day the old order

  1158. will be done away

  1159. with sin

  1160. and the law

  1161. and death

  1162. and we will enter

  1163. into life

  1164. which is truly life

  1165. we sang that hymn

  1166. at the start

  1167. come o fount

  1168. of every blessing

1169. one of my favorite hymns

1170. and one of the versions

  1171. has those words

  1172. on that day

  1173. when freed from sinning

  1174. we will see

  1175. his glorious face

  1176. and we often think

  1177. of heaven don't we

1178. as an end to suffering

  1179. you know

  1180. and be able to

  1181. do away with

  1182. all the sort of

  1183. medical things we need

  1184. and the pain

  1185. and the disease

  1186. and the discomfort

  1187. and yet it's also

  1188. a day when

  1189. we will do away

  1190. with sinning

1191. and we will be able

  1192. to stand before

  1193. the Lord

1194. and gaze on his face

  1195. and worship him

  1196. without hindrance

  1197. with complete obedience

  1198. giving to him

  1199. all of our worship

  1200. and our praise

  1201. what a wonderful thing

  1202. that will be

  1203. wonderful worship

  1204. this morning

  1205. wasn't it

  1206. but we get distracted

  1207. and you know

  1208. I think

  1209. have I put money

  1210. in the parking meter

  1211. or our minds wander

1212. and yet on that day

  1213. when freed from sinning

  1214. we will see

  1215. his glorious face

  1216. what a wonderful

1217. thing to look forward to

  1218. and in the meantime

  1219. of course

  1220. we have his promise

  1221. that he will continue

  1222. to renovate us

  1223. to make us

  1224. holy

  1225. to cleanse us

  1226. and to bear patiently

  1227. with us

  1228. as we battle sin

  1229. as we seek

1230. to sow to the spirit

  1231. not to sow

  1232. to the flesh

  1233. the Lord wants

  1234. to transform us

  1235. doesn't he

1236. he wants to conform us

  1237. to his image

1238. we don't just sit here

  1239. waiting for heaven

1240. he is doing a work

  1241. in us

  1242. to make us

1243. a people of pure speech

  1244. to make us

  1245. his holy

  1246. and treasured possession

  1247. in all

  1248. the earth

  1249. but it's not easy

1250. and it can be painful

  1251. and there can be

  1252. growing pains

  1253. in the Christian life

1254. as we face that battle

  1255. and endure that struggle

  1256. but if you've been

  1257. in the fight

  1258. for a long time

  1259. keep going

  1260. and be encouraged

  1261. by Paul's words

  1262. there is no condemnation

  1263. because the spirit

  1264. of life

  1265. has set us free

  1266. from the law

  1267. of sin

  1268. and death

  1269. well Paul wants us

  1270. to understand that

  1271. and I think that's

  1272. the reason for

  1273. this detour

  1274. these verses

  1275. deep

  1276. rich

  1277. wonderful

  1278. verses

  1279. Paul wants to

  1280. remind us

  1281. that God

  1282. graciously gave

  1283. the law to Israel

  1284. to show them

  1285. their sin

  1286. and to show them

  1287. their need

  1288. of salvation

  1289. and yet because

  1290. of their sin

  1291. they chose to

  1292. disobey

  1293. against his law

  1294. as we disobey

  1295. his law

  1296. and his commands

  1297. and he wanted to

  1298. show us

  1299. our own impotence

  1300. in keeping

  1301. the law

  1302. even if we

  1303. delight in the law

  1304. and desire in our

  1305. own strength

  1306. to serve God

  1307. we cannot do it

  1308. because of this sin

  1309. in our hearts

  1310. and therefore

  1311. we are taken

  1312. to Christ

  1313. to call out

  1314. for Christ

  1315. to look to him

  1316. on his cross

  1317. at Calvary

  1318. and having been

  1319. slain by the law

  1320. to be lifted up

  1321. and exalted

  1322. by the gospel

  1323. to be forgiven

  1324. of our sin

  1325. to be filled

  1326. as the believers

  1327. were filled

  1328. that first Pentecost

  1329. with his Holy Spirit

  1330. and to begin

  1331. that new life

  1332. to run that race

  1333. to fight that fight

  1334. Paul teaches us

  1335. about the law

  1336. and sin

  1337. and death

  1338. so that we might

  1339. come to Christ

  1340. and understand

  1341. his love

  1342. and receive his spirit

  1343. and look forward

  1344. to that great deliverance

  1345. that will one day

  1346. be ours

  1347. deliverance from

  1348. this body of death

  1349. this body of sin

  1350. deliverance from

  1351. the old order

  1352. and the way

  1353. things were

  1354. he wants us

  1355. to see the seriousness

  1356. of sin

  1357. but the salvation

  1358. of our God

1359. well we thank the Lord

  1360. for his word

1361. and for the Apostle Paul

  1362. who just communicated

  1363. these things

  1364. to us

  1365. let's just

  1366. pray together

  1367. Father we thank you

  1368. that you have

  1369. such great ambition

  1370. for us

  1371. you want to purify

  1372. our hearts

1373. that we might be holy

  1374. oh that your son

  1375. has gone to prepare

  1376. a place for us

  1377. that we might dwell

  1378. with you forever

1379. to gaze upon your face

  1380. on that day

  1381. when free from sinning

  1382. we shall see your

  1383. glorious face

  1384. and to serve you

  1385. wholeheartedly

  1386. throughout all eternity

  1387. Lord we thank you

  1388. for your great honesty

  1389. in your word

  1390. that the Christian life

  1391. is a battle

  1392. but that you have

  1393. given to us

  1394. your very great

  1395. and precious promises

  1396. you strengthen us

  1397. by your Holy Spirit

  1398. and you encourage us

  1399. Lord

  1400. through your word

  1401. and through our times

  1402. of fellowship

  1403. so Lord

  1404. would you continue

  1405. that good work

  1406. in us

  1407. that good work

  1408. begun in us

  1409. that you will

  1410. carry on to completion

  1411. until the day

  1412. of Christ Jesus

1413. help us to be holy

  1414. Lord

  1415. to put to death

1416. the deeds of the flesh

1417. and to keep in step

  1418. with your spirit

  1419. not bearing fruit

  1420. for death

  1421. but bearing the fruit

  1422. of your Holy Spirit

  1423. love and joy

  1424. and peace

1425. and all the other fruit

  1426. in our daily conduct

1427. and in our daily conversation

  1428. so we thank you

  1429. for our time

  1430. this morning

  1431. we thank you

  1432. for the opportunity

  1433. to worship you

  1434. and to encourage

  1435. one another

  1436. in Christ's name

  1437. Amen
