  1. Well, thank you very much, Stephanie, for that lovely reading. Great to hear the passage read like that.

  2. I know at my house group last week we were commenting on Thane's reading of the passage the week before,

  3. which was really beautiful, so we're getting a high standard set for us.

  4. Now, I stand before you this morning, very pleased to be here,

  5. pleased to have the opportunity to take a few minutes as we look at Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  6. but also feeling pretty inadequate, if truth be told.

  7. So, last week, let's have a show of hands. Who was here last Sunday?

  8. Okay, quite a lot. Quite a lot weren't, which is quite interesting.

  9. We had Ewan Dodds giving us, I think, a really masterful exposition of Romans 7.

  10. He had put a huge amount of work into it.

  11. He had even consulted with Pauline theologians who had PhDs in these passages, right,

  12. in order to make sure that the exposition was really careful.

  13. Next week we have Wayne Sutton, the senior pastor at Corubbers,

  14. who also has devoted his life to studying all of this.

  15. And sandwiched in between, you've got me.

  16. So, sorry, there's no degrees or PhDs in theology.

  17. I haven't even found somebody with a PhD who I could consult to be able to speak to you.

  18. But all I have been doing is reflecting quite carefully on what are incredibly rich verses

  19. throughout the last couple of weeks and just trying to let them sink into my own heart and soul.

  20. And, of course, reading a bit, but also just praying that God would make something here really real to me

  21. so that I've got something to share with you this morning.

  22. And I think you could probably look at this and study it for a week or two

  23. and come up with about 50 different sermons, to be honest.

  24. Such is the depth and complexity to it.

  25. So, here goes.

  26. Here's my attempt at making, at just sharing what this has meant to me as I've studied it.

  27. And the title, if you want a title, is this question.

  28. Who is in charge?

  29. Who's in charge?

  30. Now, we could look at that in terms of the nation.

  31. I do, of course, have a picture there of number 10 Downing Street.

  32. And it's a question which many are asking.

  33. Who's in charge?

  34. Has Theresa May really been in charge over these last weeks and months?

  35. Well, maybe, maybe not.

  36. And we now, of course, have a battle going on for who is going to be in charge.

  37. Who is going to be having those keys?

  38. Do they have keys?

  39. The door just seems to open, doesn't it?

  40. Who is going to have the door open as they turn up to number 10 Downing Street in a few weeks' time?

  41. The battle is raging, isn't it, for control?

  42. Maybe some of you, are some of you backing Boris?

  43. Or we don't like to be too political this morning at Brunsfield.

  44. Maybe you've got your other favourites.

  45. Maybe you're not too sure.

  46. Maybe you're switched off altogether with this whole battle.

  47. But I want to present to you, as we look at Romans 8, a different battle that is raging for control.

  48. Control this time in our lives.

  49. Because time and again, and please have the passage and make sure you agree with me or feel free to disagree with me.

  50. But it seems that time and again we've got a battle between what's described variously as sin, the flesh, death.

  51. Lots of different words used for it.

  52. All seeking to have dominance and control.

  53. And on the other hand, we've got so much that is said about God.

  54. God the Father, God the Son, Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit.

  55. Indeed, 17 references in these verses to the Holy Spirit.

  56. And it seems that God is appearing to us in this passage.

  57. Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

  58. Moving and inviting us to allow Him to be in charge in our lives.

  59. And telling us something about what life will be like if we really allow God to be in charge.

  60. But yet isn't it the case that as we look in our own hearts and lives, we know the reality of this battle.

  61. Particularly those of us who would describe ourselves as Christians.

  62. Those perhaps who have been coming to this church for some time or other churches or seeking to follow God.

  63. And we recognise that for all that we have come to understand something we believe about God.

  64. Powerful forces still seem to be at work.

  65. That cause what's in these verses about sin and flesh and death to still have an influence in our lives.

  66. And we saw that particularly last week as we looked at what Paul was saying about the struggle with sin in Romans chapter 7.

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  67. Well, there was a little passage I came across in Tim Keller's book, Counterfeit Gods, that I'd like to share with you before we go any further.

  68. A great book, and it's a book about how the promises of money, love and power have so much appeal but yet let us down.

  69. And he says this, the human heart is a factory that mass produces idols.

  70. Idols can never really be removed, they can only be replaced.

  71. If you try to simply uproot them, they grow back, but they can be supplanted.

  72. What we need is a living encounter with God in order for them to be supplanted.

  73. Jesus must become more beautiful to your imagination, more attractive to your heart than your idols.

  74. If you uproot the idol and fail to plant the love of God in its place, the idol will simply grow back.

  75. Now those are pretty profound words that might take us a while to get our head around.

  76. But if I can make it a bit more straightforward, I want you to think of a garden.

  77. And I want you to think of a garden, perhaps if it's anything like the patches of garden that I have,

  78. then the one thing that seems to grow very, very easily are lots and lots of weeds.

  79. And what I think Tim Keller is saying there is, it's not enough just to be trying to uproot the weeds.

  80. Because the reality is, we'll soon find in those patches of grounds, other weeds are going to grow in the place.

  81. What we have to be focusing on is planting.

  82. Planting things that will take the place of those weeds and that will cause the garden to flourish.

  83. And what I'm going to invite us all to do is perhaps to take some of the seeds,

  84. seeds which are in Romans chapter 8 verse 1 to 17.

    Romans 8:1–17

  85. Seeds of truth, of great transformational truth about God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

  86. I'm going to invite you to take these seeds and to plant them in your life.

  87. And we're going to focus more on the seeds of truth about God

  88. than we're going to focus on the weeds of sin, flesh, devil and all of the other idols

  89. which we may feel are taking place in our life.

  90. And I'm just going to invite you to perhaps focus on these seeds.

  91. And I hope some of them will be really precious.

  92. Maybe some you'll take and you'll want to just really cultivate in your life.

  93. Because you know that you need these seeds to grow and flourish

  94. so that God can really take his proper place in your life.

  95. And may that be the case as we just try to explore this a little bit further.

  96. So I've got three seeds to offer you which I think tell us something amazing,

  97. something really true, something really vital about God.

  98. First of all, God the Father.

  99. I'm going to turn to verse 3 where it says this,

  100. what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh,

  101. God did by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.

  102. And my first seed for you this morning is that God is an active God.

  103. God is somebody who is moving towards us in love.

  104. God is not someone in Romans 8 who is passive,

  105. who is simply waiting to see how we will respond.

  106. But God is always moving and reaching out towards us.

  107. And in verse 3 did so in the most ultimate way,

  108. by reaching out to us to send his son in the likeness of sinful flesh in order to die for us.

  109. Are we seeing God as someone who in Christ reached towards us in love

  110. and still through the work of the Holy Spirit is reaching out towards us today?

  111. Maybe there's a seed there.

  112. The God who is active,

  113. the God who is not disinterested,

  114. the God who is reaching out towards each of us in love today.

  115. But another truth about us and God is there in verse 7.

  116. And I'm going to point you to that today where it says,

  117. verse 7,

  118. the mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God.

  119. It does not submit to God's law,

  120. nor can it do so.

  121. And verse 8,

  122. those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

  123. And the reality about God that we're exposed to here

  124. is that just left to ourselves and our own devices,

  125. we will turn away from God and from all that God wants for us.

  126. And I wonder if we just need to take that truth again

  127. and remind our hearts and our souls

  128. that naturally left to our own devices,

  129. we do not as humans get better and better and better and more advanced

  130. and life does not, in the terms of this passage, get better.

  131. But rather left to our own devices,

  132. we are in rebellion against this God

  133. who is reaching out towards us in love.

  134. We are consciously, actively turning aside from him,

  135. turning away from him and going our own direction.

  136. And I wonder if we pause this morning

  137. and we allow these words,

  138. verse 8,

  139. those who are in the realm of the flesh

  140. cannot please God.

  141. And if we need to acknowledge and confess

  142. and perhaps repent of the fact

  143. that our attitude towards God

  144. has been one of turning away from him.

  145. Today is, of course, Happy Father's Day.

  146. Happy Father's Day to all of the dads here.

  147. I certainly got some lovely gifts this morning.

  148. I hope some of you are not looking around

  149. and suddenly realizing that you'd entirely forgotten

  150. to look after your own dads.

  151. Well, there's still plenty of time

  152. to write that for those of you

  153. who need to wish someone a Happy Father's Day.

  154. But the other wonderful truth about God here,

  155. and you'll see it in verse 14,

  156. and in many of the other verses towards the end,

  157. is that God has children.

  158. Verse 14,

  159. those who are led by the Spirit of God

  160. are children of God.

  161. And the wonderful truth that God invites us,

  162. it's there in verse 15,

  163. to approach him

  164. and to cry to him,

  165. Abba, Father.

  166. This simple cry out to,

  167. in need,

  168. but in trust,

  169. to one who knows us so well.

  170. The invitation of God this morning.

  171. The God,

  172. the Father God,

  173. who is moving towards us.

  174. The Father God,

  175. who naturally we are moving away from.

  176. And yet the God who invites us to approach him.

  177. The God who invites us to be part of his family,

  178. to share in his inheritance,

  179. and to call him Father.

  180. There are just a few seeds of truth about God the Father

  181. that you might want to take

  182. and plant deeply into your own life this morning,

  183. in place of the weeds

  184. that may be so prevalent

  185. and that will crop up

  186. if we allow them to.

  187. I've got four truths for you now.

  188. Four seeds about Jesus

  189. that I see in this passage.

  190. Jesus Christ, our Lord,

  191. which I want to offer to you

  192. and see if you can really take them

  193. and if they are helpful to you.

  194. And first of all,

  195. in verse 11,

  196. we are reminded of the truth.

  197. It says,

  198. If the spirit of him

  199. who raised Jesus from the dead

  200. is living in you,

  201. he who raised Christ from the dead

  202. will also give life to your mortal bodies

  203. because of his spirit who lives in you.

  204. Now reality,

  205. in that one little verse,

  206. we've got truths about what God the Father is doing,

  207. what the Holy Spirit is doing,

  208. and we've got a great truth in the middle of it

  209. about what Jesus,

  210. what has happened with Jesus Christ,

  211. and that is that he has been raised from the dead.

  212. And the word that is repeated a lot

  213. in this passage is the word life.

  214. And just as Jesus was given newness of life,

  215. so the promise that comes to us

  216. time and time again here

  217. is that the reality,

  218. if we are to live the life that God wants,

  219. then that is what we will experience too.

  220. That new life that Jesus had

  221. is in some ways like the new life

  222. that we will be able to experience.

  223. Why on earth have I just put up a picture now

  224. of a sports car?

  225. You may ask.

  226. Well, I'm keen to get your attention here

  227. as we think of three other truths

  228. that we are,

  229. that we're encountered,

  230. that we're invited to reflect on here

  231. about Jesus Christ.

  232. The first truth is that it is possible

  233. to experience life in Christ.

  234. Verse 1,

  235. Therefore there is now no condemnation

  236. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  237. And verse 10,

  238. If Christ is in you,

  239. then even though your body is subject to death

  240. because of sin,

  241. the Spirit gives life

  242. because of righteousness.

  243. So we can know the truth

  244. of being in Christ

  245. and having Christ in us.

  246. Just reflect a little

  247. on the closeness,

  248. on the intimacy involved

  249. in that image.

  250. And I can't really think of

  251. an image that is in any way

  252. good enough

  253. to even come close

  254. to describing it.

  255. But I was spending some time

  256. this week sitting in my car.

  257. The kids were having

  258. an incredibly long haircut

  259. and I decided

  260. I wasn't waiting there any longer.

  261. And indeed,

  262. I was going to give

  263. a little bit of thought

  264. to what I wanted to share

  265. with you today

  266. while sitting in my car.

  267. And it struck me

  268. that as I was in the car,

  269. I was completely enclosed

  270. by that car.

  271. The doors were shut,

  272. the windows were up,

  273. and this doesn't seem

  274. a particularly profound truth,

  275. but I was in the car.

  276. Yeah?

  277. But also that within that car

  278. there was so much

  279. that could be done

  280. that I would not be able

  281. to do myself.

  282. By simply pressing the button,

  283. putting my foot

  284. on the accelerator,

  285. and trying my best

  286. to pay attention

  287. to the surroundings

  288. and the rules of the road,

  289. I would be able to

  290. get places

  291. at a speed

  292. that would be

  293. utterly impossible

  294. if I wasn't actually

  295. in the car

  296. and driving in the car.

  297. You see where

  298. kind of my mind went to

  299. in eventually giving you

  300. an image of a racing car

  301. to think about.

  302. And I freely acknowledge

  303. that the image

  304. is limited.

  305. But the seed

  306. I want to give you

  307. this morning

  308. is just this thought

  309. about Jesus

  310. that he invites us

  311. to step into

  312. all that he is,

  313. all that he has,

  314. and all that he wants

  315. us to be.

  316. and not just have

  317. a kind of head knowledge

  318. of Jesus

  319. and yes,

  320. a set of beliefs

  321. about who he is

  322. and what he did,

  323. but to really step in

  324. and to think about

  325. what it means

  326. to be in Christ

  327. and to be experiencing

  328. a life

  329. where we are

  330. surrounded

  331. by him

  332. and by his love

  333. and by his power

  334. and by all

  335. that he offers

  336. to us

  337. in Christ.

  338. But the other phrase

  339. that comes

  340. time and again

  341. here

  342. is that it's possible

  343. not just to be

  344. in Christ

  345. but to belong

  346. to Christ.

  347. Verse 9

  348. says

  349. you whoever

  350. are not of the realm

  351. of the flesh

  352. but on the realm

  353. of the spirit

  354. if indeed

  355. the spirit of God

  356. lives in you

  357. if anyone does not

  358. have the spirit of Christ

  359. they do not belong

  360. to Christ.

  361. Verse 10

  362. but if Christ is in you

  363. then even though

  364. your body is subject

  365. to death

  366. because of sin

  367. the spirit gives life

  368. because of righteousness.

  369. And here's the truth

  370. here is the seed

  371. about Jesus Christ

  372. in the same way

  373. as I

  374. and my children

  375. can say with confidence

  376. that we belong

  377. to the Johnston family

  378. and you

  379. I'm sure

  380. can look at the family

  381. and hopefully

  382. have a sense

  383. of belonging

  384. to that family

  385. though I appreciate

  386. that's not a reality

  387. for everyone.

  388. So Jesus

  389. invites us today

  390. to recognize

  391. the truth

  392. that not only

  393. has he died

  394. and risen for us

  395. not only does he invite us

  396. to step in

  397. and experience

  398. a life

  399. in Christ

  400. but that he says

  401. you belong.

  402. You're no longer

  403. strangers.

  404. You're no longer

  405. at a distance.

  406. Come in

  407. and experience

  408. what it is

  409. to belong

  410. to this family

  411. this family

  412. of Christ.

  413. And I wonder

  414. if some of us

  415. need to experience

  416. again

  417. a sense of belonging

  418. a sense of belonging

  419. first and foremost

  420. to Jesus.

  421. We're not alone.

  422. We're not isolated.

  423. We're not trying

  424. to work all this

  425. stuff out ourselves.

  426. We belong.

  427. Hear the truth.

  428. You belong

  429. this morning.

  430. If you just step in

  431. willing to step

  432. into that relationship

  433. with Jesus Christ

  434. you're not on your own.

  435. And of course

  436. church

  437. is intended

  438. to be

  439. an expression

  440. of the truth

  441. that God offers us

  442. which is that

  443. in Jesus Christ

  444. we're not alone.

  445. We belong.

  446. And so in church

  447. we're told

  448. we belong to

  449. one another.

  450. We're intended

  451. to have fellowship

  452. that just

  453. emulates in some way

  454. what it is like

  455. to be part

  456. of this

  457. family.

  458. And finally

  459. and marvelously

  460. in terms of Jesus

  461. we're about to move on

  462. to some seeds

  463. in relation

  464. to the Holy Spirit.

  465. Verse 17

  466. tells us this.

  467. If we are

  468. God's children

  469. then we are

  470. heirs.

  471. Heirs of God

  472. and co-heirs

  473. with Christ.

  474. Verse 17

  475. the truth about Jesus

  476. is that as we

  477. think of Jesus

  478. and his greatness

  479. his splendor

  480. his glory

  481. as creator

  482. of this universe

  483. as the one

  484. who we see

  485. who we read about

  486. in Revelation

  487. as enthroned

  488. and exalted.

  489. We're told

  490. in verse 17

  491. that part of

  492. what's going on

  493. here in terms

  494. of God

  495. is that we are

  496. co-heirs

  497. with Christ.

  498. All of his

  499. inheritance

  500. all of his

  501. riches

  502. are things

  503. that we are

  504. invited to

  505. share in.

  506. I don't pretend

  507. to understand

  508. even the

  509. beginnings

  510. of what that's

  511. really all about

  512. other than to

  513. offer it to you

  514. as a truth

  515. as a seed

  516. which perhaps

  517. can supplant

  518. some of the

  519. rubbish

  520. that might be

  521. in our lives

  522. and growing

  523. all around us.

  524. Truths about God

  525. truths about Jesus

  526. and now we come on

  527. to in many ways

  528. the person who

  529. seems to be

  530. the central figure

  531. in this passage

  532. the Holy Spirit

  533. himself

  534. note in verses

  535. 9 and 10

  536. that he's not

  537. somebody who may

  538. or may not

  539. be present

  540. in the lives

  541. of Christians

  542. it's very very clear

  543. in verses 9 and 10

  544. that he comes

  545. and dwells

  546. in every single

  547. person

  548. who is

  549. a follower

  550. of Jesus

  551. Christ

  552. and again

  553. he offers

  554. us life

  555. verses 2

  556. verses 6

  557. verses 10

  558. verses 11

  559. verses 13

  560. and there are others

  561. repeating time

  562. and again

  563. that the Holy Spirit

  564. comes and offers

  565. life

  566. but I want to

  567. just give you

  568. two or three

  569. specific seeds

  570. about the Holy Spirit

  571. that I observe

  572. in this passage

  573. which I think

  574. might be helpful

  575. for us

  576. verse 5

  577. let's look at it

  578. those who live

  579. according to the flesh

  580. have their minds

  581. set on what the flesh

  582. desires

  583. but those who live

  584. in accordance with the

  585. Spirit

  586. have their minds

  587. set on what

  588. the Spirit

  589. desires

  590. and just that wee phrase

  591. at the end

  592. has been playing

  593. in my mind

  594. mindset

  595. on what

  596. the Spirit

  597. desires

  598. and the truth

  599. about the Holy Spirit

  600. that I offer you

  601. this morning

  602. is that the Holy Spirit

  603. is not disinterested

  604. in us

  605. and in our life

  606. and in our choices

  607. and in our present

  608. and in our future

  609. but he has desires

  610. for us

  611. the Holy Spirit

  612. has desires

  613. for your life

  614. and for mine

  615. regardless of our age

  616. and stage

  617. regardless of our past

  618. regardless of our regrets

  619. regardless of our fears

  620. I stand confident

  621. because it's in God's Word

  622. and say

  623. that the Holy Spirit

  624. has desires

  625. for our life

  626. and for my life

  627. verse 13

  628. another truth

  629. if you live

  630. according to the flesh

  631. you will die

  632. but if by the Spirit

  633. you put to death

  634. the misdeeds of the body

  635. you will live

  636. and the truth here

  637. is that the Holy Spirit

  638. gives us power

  639. the Holy Spirit

  640. is the only one

  641. who gives us power

  642. to change

  643. he's the one

  644. who gives us the power

  645. to uproot those weeds

  646. and rubbish

  647. that might be taking

  648. place in our lives

  649. and so if we are here

  650. this morning

  651. struggling with sin

  652. feeling regretful

  653. about the

  654. perhaps the events

  655. of the last week

  656. month

  657. year

  658. or maybe even

  659. our lives

  660. then in and of ourselves

  661. that's normal

  662. but I want to

  663. encourage us

  664. and to give you

  665. this seed

  666. this morning

  667. that the Holy Spirit

  668. is the one

  669. who says

  670. I'll give you

  671. that power

  672. day by day

  673. to change

  674. I'm not saying

  675. it'll be easy

  676. I'm not saying

  677. that suddenly

  678. because you've got

  679. the Holy Spirit

  680. in your life

  681. everything will be fine

  682. and you'll no longer

  683. experience the desires

  684. around sin

  685. but I am saying

  686. I'll give you the power

  687. to put to death

  688. the misdeeds

  689. of the body

  690. and then another truth

  691. about the Holy Spirit

  692. is in verse 14

  693. where it says

  694. those who are led

  695. by the Spirit of God

  696. are the children of God

  697. I don't normally use slides

  698. and some of you

  699. might be saying

  700. Paul we wish you

  701. continued not to use slides

  702. because some of your pictures

  703. are really a bit bizarre

  704. why on earth

  705. are you now showing

  706. a picture of a dog

  707. with a dog's lead

  708. in its mouth

  709. well I was thinking here

  710. of what it means

  711. to be led by the Spirit

  712. because as well as

  713. the Holy Spirit

  714. having desires

  715. as well as the Holy Spirit

  716. having power

  717. the reality is

  718. the Holy Spirit

  719. wants to lead us

  720. now I find it's quite strange

  721. I for the last couple of years

  722. have had a little dog

  723. and have very much enjoyed

  724. being out with a dog

  725. but there's a choice

  726. you have to make

  727. every time

  728. you're going to go out

  729. with a dog

  730. and that is

  731. is it a time

  732. to have the dog

  733. on the lead or not

  734. now some of you

  735. who might be in the

  736. kind of centre of Edinburgh

  737. maybe have never experienced

  738. taking a dog out

  739. without a lead on

  740. because I appreciate

  741. you probably don't want

  742. dogs walking up and down

  743. Leamington Terrace

  744. without leads on

  745. it's probably a bit dangerous

  746. but I do like the times

  747. where living slightly

  748. out of town

  749. it's possible to have

  750. our little dog Harris

  751. running around

  752. without his lead on

  753. but do you know

  754. what happens?

  755. He gets so distracted

  756. he's having a great time

  757. but he can't really

  758. get anywhere

  759. because

  760. let's face it

  761. it's smells

  762. it's lamp posts

  763. it's random bits

  764. of ground

  765. it's the grass

  766. it's another dog

  767. but there are just

  768. so many distractions

  769. that if he's out

  770. without his lead

  771. then it's pretty much

  772. running round

  773. in circles time

  774. and every so often

  775. when I call him

  776. because I think

  777. we're going to go somewhere

  778. the odd thing is

  779. he gets quite excited

  780. about the lead going on

  781. and as somehow

  782. or other then

  783. having a somewhat

  784. more purposeful

  785. journey

  786. where we see more

  787. than just the same

  788. patch of grass

  789. that we're sort of

  790. running round and round

  791. and round

  792. and fascinated by

  793. slightly unpleasant

  794. smells in it

  795. now again

  796. it's an illustration

  797. which I'm offering you

  798. it's got huge limitations

  799. because I do not think

  800. God sees us

  801. as people

  802. in the same way

  803. as I see that dog

  804. right

  805. so I'm not suggesting

  806. for a minute

  807. God wants to take us

  808. in a lead

  809. and drag us through life

  810. or that that's what

  811. the Holy Spirit's up

  812. but what I am saying

  813. from this passage today

  814. is the Holy Spirit

  815. wants to lead us

  816. and I think the question

  817. is whether we are

  818. willing to be led

  819. by the Holy Spirit

  820. and I think

  821. where my illustration

  822. may have some relevance

  823. is that the reality

  824. is that without

  825. the Holy Spirit's leading

  826. we might be a bit

  827. like that dog

  828. running round and round

  829. and round in circles

  830. being totally distracted

  831. maybe at times

  832. thinking we're having

  833. a great time

  834. but getting absolutely

  835. nowhere

  836. and so I ask

  837. myself

  838. where is the Holy Spirit

  839. wanting to take me

  840. where is he wanting

  841. me to go

  842. what decisions

  843. is he wanting me

  844. to make

  845. today

  846. and in the days

  847. ahead

  848. and am I seeking

  849. his will

  850. am I saying

  851. God

  852. through the power

  853. of the Holy Spirit

  854. please lead

  855. and direct my life

  856. so that I do not

  857. just run around

  858. in circles

  859. and waste this time

  860. on earth

  861. but that I use

  862. whatever days

  863. and moments I have

  864. to bring pleasure

  865. to you

  866. and to go

  867. in the direction

  868. that you want me

  869. to go

  870. and then finally

  871. the Holy Spirit

  872. comes

  873. and in verse 16

  874. he assures us

  875. he gives us

  876. power to change

  877. he leads us

  878. he assures us

  879. verse 16

  880. he testifies

  881. with our spirit

  882. that we are

  883. God's children

  884. and maybe some of us

  885. the seed I can offer you

  886. is that the Holy Spirit

  887. comes and says

  888. you're not alone

  889. you're not forgotten

  890. you're not abandoned

  891. and just as children

  892. need assurance

  893. after a fall

  894. or after a scare

  895. the Holy Spirit

  896. comes and assures

  897. you today

  898. you are indeed

  899. God's children

  900. we're pretty much

  901. out of time

  902. so I'm going to

  903. have to finish

  904. but I wanted to

  905. leave with you

  906. three of the promises

  907. which happen to

  908. begin with an F

  909. and therefore

  910. might be memorable

  911. for some of you

  912. if you like

  913. that kind of thing

  914. that we are offered

  915. if we are willing

  916. to do that work

  917. of getting rid

  918. of the weeds

  919. and planting

  920. in place

  921. the truth

  922. of God

  923. the truth

  924. of what God

  925. the Father

  926. Son

  927. and Holy Spirit

  928. are wanting to do

  929. and it's there

  930. in verse 1

  931. there is no condemnation

  932. for those who are

  933. in Christ Jesus

  934. and it's there

  935. in other bits

  936. of the passage

  937. the word freedom

  938. that's what we are

  939. offered today

  940. do you know

  941. in Scotland

  942. there are more people

  943. imprisoned

  944. in our prisons

  945. across Scotland

  946. than has been the case

  947. for many many years

  948. more than 8,000 people

  949. are in prison custody

  950. today in Scotland

  951. despite our crime

  952. being at a lower level

  953. and it's been for many many years

  954. to discuss

  955. feel free to have a chat

  956. about why that might be

  957. the case over lunch

  958. but I wonder how many of us

  959. while not being in prison custody

  960. in reality

  961. are not experiencing

  962. anything like the freedom

  963. that God actually intends

  964. for us

  965. and that he offers

  966. if we allow him

  967. to enter

  968. into our lives

  969. and then the other truth

  970. that we see time and again

  971. is that he offers us

  972. the reality of a life

  973. that is not

  974. marked by fear

  975. dread

  976. insecurity

  977. but rather

  978. a life

  979. where we can know

  980. what it is

  981. to be fearless

  982. and finally

  983. a life

  984. where we know

  985. what it is

  986. to be part of

  987. God's family

  988. I offer you those

  989. as we close

  990. and

  991. just invite us now

  992. to take a moment

  993. as we reflect

  994. on all that God

  995. Father

  996. Son

  997. Holy Spirit

  998. want to do

  999. in our lives

  1000. in our hearts

  1001. in this church

  1002. in our families

  1003. for our today

  1004. and for our future

  1005. let's come before him

  1006. and invite him

  1007. to supplant

  1008. all the other stuff

1009. and to take his place

  1010. in our lives

  1011. God thank you

  1012. for your desires

  1013. for us

  1014. thank you for

  1015. the work

  1016. that you have done

  1017. for us

  1018. to

  1019. offer us

  1020. rescue

  1021. hope

  1022. purpose

  1023. and a future

  1024. Holy Spirit

  1025. thank you

  1026. for your

  1027. presence within

  1028. and your desire

  1029. to lead us

  1030. and we say

  1031. as we

  1032. move on

  1033. from this point

  1034. would you

  1035. dwell within

  1036. be at home

  1037. in our hearts

  1038. and rule

  1039. in our lives

  1040. we ask

  1041. in Jesus name

  1042. and for his glory

  1043. Amen
