  1. Good evening, it's great to be here tonight and to open up this passage.

  2. This is a great passage, I've really enjoyed looking at it over the last wee while.

  3. So, as said, this is a Sermon on the Mount.

  4. We've heard over the last two Sunday evenings that this sermon is Jesus, the radical king,

  5. proclaiming his radical kingdom.

  6. In case anyone hasn't been here, in the preceding chapters to the Sermon on the Mount,

  7. Jesus has been baptised by John, he's been tempted in the wilderness by the devil

  8. and has called his first few disciples to follow him.

  9. It is at this point that we find Jesus teaching the disciples how they are to follow him.

  10. This announcement of God's kingdom is to transform the hearts of his disciples

  11. so that they can love God and their neighbour, including and especially their enemy.

  12. If we are a follower of Christ here tonight,

  13. if we have accepted Jesus as Lord of our lives and as Saviour through the work of the cross,

  14. then this message tonight is for us.

  15. If Christ is our King, then we are his subjects in his upside-down kingdom

  16. where all are invited and no members are privileged over any other.

  17. We are to live out the teachings of the Sermon

  18. in loving response to the work of the Lord Jesus on the cross,

  19. which has put us in the privileged position of being Christ's disciples.

  20. Sponsorship. Sponsorship is big money.

  21. In 2017-18, Federer, I've got a photo of him up here,

  22. he was ranked seventh in Forbes list of the world's highest paid athletes.

  23. He earned $77.2 million in earnings,

  24. and that included $65 million in sponsorship.

  25. He is sponsored by Uniqlo.

  26. That's the clothing brand that he wears, a Chinese brand.

  27. Mercedes-Benz, Lint, Rolex, Credit Suisse, and that's just naming a few.

  28. All of these top brands, they pay massive amounts of money

  29. for top sports people to represent them.

  30. They choose based on who the person is,

  31. how they come across to people,

  32. and whether they'll represent their brand well.

  33. What Federer does, whether it's on the tennis court

  34. or in his personal life,

  35. affects what people think of Uniqlo.

  36. Federer is their representative.

  37. He's got to wear their gear,

  38. he's got to talk about them,

  39. attend their events,

  40. and represent the values of the brand.

  41. Being a Christian means to be Christ-like.

  42. We represent Christ here on earth.

  43. What we say and do affects what people think of us,

  44. which in turn affects what people think about Jesus.

  45. The two go together.

  46. This means that our values have to align with God's values.

  47. Our attitudes are to be aligned with God's attitudes,

  48. and our actions are to be what God would want us to do.

  49. The passage we'll look at is all about being radically different

  50. in the world that we live in,

  51. in order to point people to God.

  52. We are to be God's representatives.

  53. The question to start off with is,

  54. are you representing God in the way that he would want you to?

  55. Last week, Alistair spoke to us about blueprint for the Christian life,

  56. the Beatitudes,

  57. the characteristics of the Christian.

  58. Tonight, we're going to look at salt and light,

  59. and how we are to be God's representatives on earth.

  60. Great.

  61. So, Jesus says in verse 13,

  62. if you want to keep it in front of you, that would be great.

  63. Jesus says that you are the salt of the earth,

  64. in verse 13.

  65. In order to try and understand this phrase,

  66. we need to put ourselves in the mind of those listening at the time.

  67. In Old Testament times,

  68. under the law,

  69. sacrifices were to be salted.

  70. You can find that in Leviticus 2.13 later on,

  71. if you want to look that up.

  72. Now, Paul says in Romans 12,

  73. that Christians are to offer themselves

  74. as living sacrifices to God.

  75. This means that we are to offer our lives

  76. conformed to his ways,

  77. and to live them out in the way that he teaches.

  78. We are to allow God to mold us,

  79. and use us however he chooses,

  80. and for his glory.

  81. Salt was also used as a sign of a covenant,

  82. or an agreement.

  83. Jesus established the new covenant

  84. by offering himself on the cross for our sins.

  85. Jesus dealt with our sins once and for all,

  86. by being the perfect sacrifice.

  87. Hebrews describes Jesus as the guarantor

  88. of this better covenant.

  89. We are the beneficiaries of this new covenant

  90. as redeemed people who have been made right

  91. before our holy and righteous God.

  92. If you are here tonight,

  93. and you are not right with God,

  94. if you have not accepted Jesus as Savior,

  95. then you need to seriously consider these things.

  96. Why not speak to myself or someone else tonight about it?

  97. And as Christians,

  98. we are to lovingly and willingly serve Jesus

  99. as those who have,

  100. undeservedly,

  101. been forgiven by grace.

  102. Ephesians 5 verse 1 to 2 says,

    Ephesians 5:1–2

  103. Follow God's example therefore,

  104. as dearly loved children,

  105. and walk in the way of love,

  106. just as Christ loved us,

  107. and gave himself up for us,

  108. as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

  109. Are you living your life

  110. as a living sacrifice?

  111. to God?

  112. As well as the thoughts

  113. that this image of salt would have

  114. about sacrifices

  115. and about covenants,

  116. those listening would also think

  117. about their everyday life

  118. and what they used salt for.

  119. Now in Bible times,

  120. salt was the only way

  121. that they could preserve anything.

  122. In the modern world,

  123. refrigeration and freezing,

  124. we've lost this a little bit,

  125. but salt's still used in brining processes

  126. for meat and for fish,

  127. and it stops it going off,

  128. as well as being added into lots of different foods

  129. to increase the shelf life.

  130. So we can still relate to this image.

  131. Now we are to be preservers

  132. of the gospel message in the world.

  133. We are to prevent the corruption

  134. of Jesus' message

  135. and of Christian values.

  136. In an increasingly liberal

  137. and secular society,

  138. Christian values are under threat

  139. from popular opinion

  140. as well as the laws of the land.

  141. We are called to defend our faith,

  142. standing up for what we believe in

  143. and our freedom to share

  144. the good news of Jesus Christ.

  145. Are you standing up

  146. for what you believe in?

  147. Now salt

  148. also causes us to thirst.

  149. So that's good timing.

  150. We've all been there.

  151. You're driving home

  152. after the evening service,

  153. you stop off

  154. at the local Chinese takeaway

  155. for a honey-shredded chili chicken,

  156. and then you wake up

  157. on a Monday morning

  158. and you feel like you've slept

  159. in the desert.

  160. Yeah?

  161. Maybe just us.

  162. Anyway,

  163. we've all had the salty meal

  164. in the past,

  165. and for a while afterwards

  166. we find ourselves

  167. needing to drink a lot.

  168. Now we are called

  169. to make others thirsty

  170. for righteousness.

  171. By our conduct

  172. in our day-to-day lives,

  173. others are to see

  174. that we have something different

  175. and that we are to make them

  176. thirsty for that.

  177. As Christians,

  178. we are to point others

  179. to Christ

  180. and the righteousness

  181. which comes

  182. through our saving faith

  183. in him.

  184. We do so by

  185. studying his word

  186. so that we can learn

  187. and live out his teachings.

  188. We can't live out

  189. his teachings

  190. unless we study

  191. and submit to them.

  192. This is the importance

  193. of regular Bible reading

  194. and attendance at meetings

  195. such as this one

  196. where the Bible

  197. is taught or discussed.

  198. We need to learn

  199. Jesus' teachings

  200. to be conformed

  201. to them

  202. so that we can

  203. carry them out

  204. in our daily lives.

  205. Are you causing others

  206. to thirst for righteousness?

  207. Salt also gives flavor.

  208. I once turned to Corey

  209. and said,

  210. I don't really get

  211. the whole salt thing.

  212. I hardly use it.

  213. To which I got the reply,

  214. well, I put it in your food

  215. every day.

  216. You know,

  217. salt brings out

  218. the flavoring

  219. of the ingredients

  220. in order to make

  221. the whole meal better.

  222. I've been known

  223. to bake from time to time

  224. and almost every recipe

  225. has a bit of salt in it.

  226. And this might seem strange

  227. in a sweet dish,

  228. but it's an integral part

  229. of the process

  230. to bring out

  231. the other flavors,

  232. whether it's vanilla

  233. or chocolate,

  234. whatever it may be.

  235. Now, we are to season

  236. conversations

  237. and situations

  238. with wisdom

  239. from God.

  240. We are to bring out

  241. God's love

  242. and mercy

  243. from the dealings

  244. we have with people

  245. in our day-to-day lives.

  246. Our deeds

  247. and words

  248. are to point people

  249. to the goodness

  250. of God,

  251. not of ourselves.

  252. My sister,

  253. and you can't tell her this,

  254. but she once mixed up

  255. the salt

  256. and the sugar quantities

  257. in a cookie recipe.

  258. So we had one teaspoon

  259. of sugar

  260. and multiple tablespoons

  261. of salt.

  262. And as you can imagine,

  263. as soon as we took a bite,

  264. we just spat it back out again.

  265. Now, we aren't to draw

  266. praise and attention

  267. to ourselves.

  268. You don't put salt

  269. in to taste it.

  270. But we are to be

  271. constantly pointing people

  272. to God.

  273. We are to be

  274. representatives

  275. of the one who saves

  276. and who is truly good.

  277. Are you pointing people

  278. to God

  279. by your words

  280. and your deeds?

  281. It is at this point

  282. that we have a serious

  283. warning about the lives

  284. that we live.

  285. The rest of verse 13 says,

  286. But if the salt loses its flavor,

  287. how shall it be seasoned?

  288. It is then good for nothing

  289. but to be thrown out

  290. and trampled underfoot

  291. by men.

  292. Nowadays,

  293. we eat a refined salt,

  294. which is pure.

  295. But in biblical times,

  296. salt was impure

  297. and it had little vegetable

  298. and earthy parts

  299. mixed in.

  300. And if the salty bits

  301. or the saltiness

  302. had been lost,

  303. then they would use this

  304. for roads and paths,

  305. a kind of equivalent

  306. of gravel.

  307. This helps us to understand

  308. this image slightly better

  309. of salt that has lost

  310. its flavor.

  311. Now we are to take this

  312. as a serious warning.

  313. We are called,

  314. as Jesus' followers,

  315. to be salt,

  316. representing the new covenant,

  317. preserving,

  318. causing thirst

  319. and flavoring.

  320. If we are not doing so,

  321. then we are not being subject

  322. to our king

  323. and following his teachings.

  324. If we are not true

  325. to our calling,

  326. then we are good

  327. for nothing

  328. but to be thrown out

  329. and trampled

  330. underfoot by men.

  331. If we are not true

  332. to our calling,

  333. then we will be trampled

  334. in the world

  335. as hypocritical,

  336. self-righteous people

  337. who do not practice

  338. what we preach.

  339. This is a serious warning

  340. and it should motivate us

  341. to radical change

  342. in our lives.

  343. Jesus also says

  344. in verse 14

  345. that you are the light

  346. of the world.

  347. Light in the Bible,

  348. it's often associated

  349. with goodness,

  350. righteousness

  351. and life.

  352. Whereas darkness

  353. in the Bible

  354. is often associated

  355. with evil,

  356. sin and death.

  357. We are to shine

  358. for Jesus

  359. in the world.

  360. In John 8 verse 12

    John 8:12

  361. we read,

  362. I am the light

  363. of the world.

  364. Whoever follows me

  365. will never walk

  366. in darkness

  367. but will have

  368. the light

  369. of life.

  370. Jesus is the source

  371. of the light.

  372. We are the reflection

  373. of that light.

  374. Have you ever thought

  375. about the moon?

  376. Following the moon

  377. theme of the week

  378. and of the day

  379. and of the walls.

  380. You know,

  381. the moon is just

  382. a grey lump of rock

  383. rotating around the earth.

  384. There is nothing

  385. of itself

  386. that is beautiful

  387. or gives any joy.

  388. However,

  389. when the sun shines on it,

  390. it glows brightly

  391. and beautifully

  392. and it gives light

  393. to the earth

  394. during the night.

  395. We are like the moon.

  396. We have nothing bright

  397. or attractive

  398. about us on our own

  399. but with Jesus

  400. we have his light

  401. to share

  402. and to illuminate

  403. the darkness.

  404. First of all,

  405. we need to realise

  406. that the world

  407. is a dark place.

  408. Darkness

  409. is the absence

  410. of light.

  411. As we look out

  412. into the world

  413. we can see

  414. that the world

  415. is a place

  416. without God.

  417. The world

  418. is a sinful place

  419. with many living

  420. without God

  421. and the peace

  422. that comes

  423. through our saving

  424. faith in him.

  425. The darkness

  426. is great.

  427. However,

  428. the smallest light

  429. can dispel

  430. the greatest

  431. of darkness.

  432. I always remember

  433. as a child

  434. we would get

  435. power cuts

  436. during the night.

  437. The street lights

  438. would be out,

  439. the hall light

  440. would be off

  441. and the house

  442. would be pitch black.

  443. I would be blindly

  444. trying to find

  445. the door out of my room

  446. when my parents

  447. would come in

  448. holding a small torch

  449. or a candle

  450. and the whole room

  451. would light up

  452. with a warm glow.

  453. This is how we are

  454. to be in the world.

  455. We are to go

  456. through life

  457. dispelling darkness

  458. and shedding light

  459. in the darkest

  460. of places.

  461. We are not strong

  462. in ourselves

  463. but by relying

  464. on Christ.

  465. We can approach

  466. any situation

  467. with confidence

  468. and assurance.

  469. We do not just

  470. have a small light

  471. to shine though.

  472. We have the light

  473. shining through us

  474. of the very one

  475. who is light.

  476. This truth

  477. should compel us

  478. to go out

  479. into the world

  480. as shining

  481. representatives

  482. of Christ.

  483. This is not saying

  484. that we are to be

  485. of the world

  486. joining in sinful

  487. activities

  488. and going along

  489. with the crowd.

  490. We are to conform

  491. to Jesus' ways

  492. not to the ways

  493. of the world.

  494. But on the other

  495. end of the scale

  496. we are not to

  497. shut ourselves off

  498. from the world

  499. and live in a

  500. Christian bubble.

  501. We are to live

  502. in the world

  503. but be so different

  504. in the way

  505. that we live

  506. that people

  507. can't help

  508. but notice.

  509. Are you a shining

  510. representative

  511. of Christ?

  512. We are also

  513. drawn to think

  514. of light

  515. in natural terms

  516. as well.

  517. You know light

  518. allows us

  519. to see the way.

  520. As city dwellers

  521. most of us

  522. there is very

  523. little darkness

  524. even in the depths

  525. of night.

  526. But if you take

  527. a trip out

  528. to the countryside

  529. you can appreciate

  530. real darkness.

  531. If you're on a walk

  532. on a cloudy night

  533. you wouldn't be able

  534. to see a thing

  535. and you'd be

  536. stumbling and tripping

  537. on your root.

  538. You know we are

  539. to shine for Jesus

  540. in our daily lives

  541. showing others

  542. the path

  543. and illuminating

  544. the way.

  545. We are to show

  546. people who are

  547. still in darkness

  548. those who are

  549. not yet Christians

  550. the way that is

  551. good and true

  552. and leads to

  553. eternal life.

  554. We are to share

  555. the good news

  556. of Jesus

  557. with everyone

  558. we meet

  559. be it close

  560. friends,

  561. family or those

  562. who we are

  563. just passing by.

  564. God gives us

  565. opportunities to do

  566. so.

  567. We need to be

  568. brave enough

  569. to take them.

  570. A challenge

  571. might be to go

  572. away and pray

  573. for opportunities

  574. to show others

  575. who you encounter

  576. in your daily

  577. lives

  578. the way.

  579. Furthermore

  580. we can help

  581. other Christians

  582. through our

  583. words and deeds.

  584. We can be

  585. shining examples

  586. of how to live

  587. in a world

  588. that is

  589. increasingly

  590. difficult to

  591. navigate and

  592. full of bumps

  593. in the road.

  594. Are you praying

  595. for and taking

  596. opportunities to

  597. share the good

  598. news of Jesus

  599. with others?

  600. The rest of

  601. verse 14 and

  602. 15 if you want

  603. to look back

  604. is a warning

  605. not to hide

  606. our light.

  607. It says

  608. a city that is

  609. set on a hill

  610. cannot be hidden

  611. nor do they

  612. light a lamp

  613. and put it

  614. under a basket

  615. but on a

  616. lamp stand

  617. and it gives

  618. light to all

  619. who are in

  620. the house.

  621. With this

  622. image I always

  623. think of

  624. Edinburgh Castle.

  625. I cycle to

  626. work near the

  627. bypass on the

  628. south side of

  629. the city

  630. and at one

  631. point I can

  632. look left

  633. back across

  634. the city

  635. and I can

  636. see cranes

  637. I can see

  638. tops of

  639. buildings

  640. you can see

  641. Arthur's seat

  642. but the one

  643. thing that

  644. always sticks

  645. out is the

  646. castle built

  647. on the

  648. crags above

  649. the city.

  650. You know

  651. Edinburgh Castle

  652. cannot be hidden

  653. it is there

  654. for all to

  655. see.

  656. This is our

  657. responsibility

  658. as guardians

  659. of the

  660. light.

  661. We are to

  662. shine forth

  663. into the

  664. world as

  665. witnesses of

  666. the one

  667. who is

  668. light.

  669. As with

  670. the salt

  671. though this

  672. is not

  673. about us.

  674. Verse 16

  675. says let

  676. your light

  677. so shine

  678. before men

  679. that they

  680. may see

  681. your good

  682. works and

  683. glorify your

  684. father in

  685. heaven.

  686. This is not

  687. saying that we

  688. are to be

  689. boastful and

  690. showy

  691. in what

  692. we do.

  693. We are to

  694. be

  695. representatives

  696. of God

  697. not advertisers

  698. of ourselves.

  699. Further on

  700. in the

  701. sermon and

  702. I won't

  703. encroach on

  704. what someone

  705. will speak

  706. on in a

  707. few weeks

  708. but there's

  709. a warning

  710. not to do

  711. things so

  712. that others

  713. will see

  714. and give

  715. us praise.

  716. We should

  717. remember this

  718. as we seek

  719. to serve

  720. God in

  721. what we

  722. do.

  723. Jesus he

  724. was the

  725. ultimate

  726. example of

  727. humility

  728. and meekness

  729. and it

  730. is his

  731. example that

  732. we should

  733. follow.

  734. Now you've

  735. probably heard

  736. many a story

  737. about a

  738. celebrity who's

  739. had their

  740. reputation

  741. tarnished.

  742. One of the

  743. ones that

  744. came to my

  745. mind was

  746. Lance Armstrong

  747. the infamous

  748. cyclist who

  749. was central

  750. of the

  751. biggest doping

  752. scandal in

  753. cycling history.

  754. One day he

  755. was the most

  756. successful cyclist

  757. in the world.

  758. He was loved

  759. for his success

  760. but also his

  761. charitable work

  762. but the next

  763. day he was

  764. labelled a

  765. fraud and a

  766. liar who

  767. cheated his

  768. way to the

  769. top.

  770. Suddenly all

  771. the top

  772. brands they

  773. were all

  774. running away

  775. from him.

  776. They didn't

  777. want anything

  778. to do with

  779. him.

  780. And this

  781. isn't unique.

  782. Tiger Woods,

  783. Maria Sharapova,

  784. Mike Tyson all

  785. suffered the

  786. same fate.

  787. These people

  788. were giving

  789. the brand a

  790. bad name by

  791. what they had

  792. done and how

  793. they had

  794. acted.

  795. They as

  796. representatives of

  797. the brand

  798. had tarnished

  799. it in an

  800. instant all

  801. the good

  802. work that

  803. had built

  804. up over

  805. many years.

  806. We are

  807. representatives

  808. of Jesus

  809. reflecting his

  810. light into

  811. the world

  812. in word

  813. and deed.

  814. As we've

  815. heard over

  816. the last

  817. two weeks

  818. being a

  819. Christian is

  820. something that

  821. we behave as

  822. well as we

  823. believe.

  824. Being a

  825. Christian is

  826. about our

  827. attitudes and

  828. our actions.

  829. There are

  830. many well-known

  831. figures who are

  832. Christians and

  833. use their

  834. position to

  835. defend the

  836. Christian faith.

  837. I recently

  838. heard Jeremy

  839. Balfour,

  840. MSP for

  841. Lothian,

  842. speak about

  843. living as a

  844. Christian in

  845. the political

  846. world.

  847. He has a

  848. history of

  849. making challenges

  850. in Parliament

  851. to motions and

  852. rulings which go

  853. against his

  854. faith.

  855. He's a great

  856. example of

  857. someone who

  858. is doing what

  859. he can in the

  860. position that he

  861. has, albeit to

  862. the potential

  863. detriment of his

  864. career.

  865. Now there are

  866. many other

  867. examples that will

  868. come to your

  869. mind of

  870. Christians who

  871. are doing

  872. likewise.

  873. Some of you

  874. might know that

  875. I'm part of

  876. the Edinburgh

  877. Street Pastors.

  878. In case people

  879. don't know what

  880. that is, every

  881. Friday night of

  882. the month and

  883. two Saturdays of

  884. the month, people

  885. from churches all

  886. over Edinburgh

  887. go out into the

  888. streets between

  889. the hours of

  890. 11pm and

  891. 4am.

  892. The tagline is

  893. listen, care and

  894. help, as that is

  895. what we are there

  896. to do.

  897. We go around

  898. seeing if anyone

  899. is in a difficult

  900. or a vulnerable

  901. situation.

  902. We're there for

  903. people who maybe

  904. just need someone

  905. to listen to them

  906. or people who

  907. need practical

  908. help.

  909. It might be

  910. finding lost

  911. friends, getting

  912. home safely or

  913. getting a warm

  914. drink for the

  915. cold night.

  916. As we meet

  917. people living on

  918. the streets or

  919. spilling out from

  920. pubs and clubs,

  921. the most common

  922. questions are who

  923. are you and why

  924. on earth are you

  925. here at this time

  926. of the night?

  927. Once we explain

  928. who we are and

  929. why we do it,

  930. people are often

  931. amazed that it's

  932. a volunteer service

  933. and that we don't

  934. get anything out

  935. of it.

  936. We do it because

  937. as we go around

  938. Edinburgh we are

  939. shining the light

  940. of Jesus into the

  941. darkest of places

  942. and proclaiming

  943. that his kingdom

  944. come.

  945. This is an example

  946. of being radically

  947. different in the

  948. world we live in.

  949. It's counter-cultural

  950. in today's society

  951. to give up your

  952. time and your

  953. resources in such

  954. a way to serve

  955. others.

  956. But street pastors

  957. is just one example

  958. and I would also

  959. just add that good

  960. deeds are not just

  961. limited to Christians.

  962. Drew a few weeks

  963. ago he talked

  964. about how Basics

  965. Bank which is run

  966. by the church is

  967. such a great way

  968. to care for people

  969. holistically,

  970. physically and

  971. spiritually.

  972. People here also

  973. volunteer with the

  974. Bethany Care van

  975. feeding the homeless

  976. or those who are

  977. struggling.

  978. CAP, Christians

  979. Against Poverty,

  980. also does great work

  981. across the country

  982. and many people

  983. come to faith

  984. through their work.

  985. Practically speaking

  986. it can be great

  987. to be part of groups

  988. who carry out

  989. such activities

  990. in a regular

  991. and organised fashion.

  992. However,

  993. we can be radically

  994. different and reflect

  995. the light of Christ

  996. in our daily lives

  997. whether that's at home,

  998. at work,

  999. or on the sports field.

  1000. We are to be

  1001. salt and light

  1002. representatives

  1003. of Jesus

  1004. through his power

  1005. and for the glory

  1006. of our Father

  1007. in heaven.

  1008. There are many ways

  1009. we can serve God

  1010. and use our gifts

  1011. and skills

  1012. to witness for Jesus.

  1013. This is our call.

1014. Will we take it up?

  1015. It's too easy

  1016. and I stress

  1017. that I'm challenging

  1018. myself here

1019. to sit and nod along

  1020. when we hear

  1021. from God's word

1022. and then not to put

  1023. it into action.

1024. But we need to act.

  1025. We're God's representatives

1026. and we need to act

  1027. accordingly.

  1028. In the morning series

  1029. recently we've been

  1030. going through the Psalms

  1031. and it's been great

  1032. to hear how

  1033. different hymns

  1034. and choruses

  1035. have really brought

  1036. to light the passages

  1037. that we've been studying.

  1038. And you know

  1039. as I was thinking

  1040. about this

  1041. if you're going home

  1042. and you're humming a tune

1043. I would like it to be this one

  1044. and we all

  1045. probably all sang it

1046. as we were a kid.

  1047. It was

1048. This little light of mine

1049. I'm going to let it shine.

1050. This little light of mine

1051. I'm going to let it shine.

1052. This little light of mine

1053. I'm going to let it shine.

  1054. Let it shine.

  1055. Let it shine.

  1056. Let it shine.

1057. And then the second verse

  1058. Jesus is the light

1059. I'm going to let him shine.

  1060. And it finishes

  1061. let him shine.

  1062. Let him shine.

  1063. Let him shine.

1064. I'm just going to pray to close

  1065. and then we'll

  1066. we'll have some questions

  1067. for us to discuss.

  1068. God and Father

1069. we thank you for your word.

1070. We thank you for the teachings

  1071. of the Lord Jesus

  1072. and how

1073. even though they were so

  1074. many years ago

  1075. they are so relevant

  1076. to today's world

  1077. and to us

1078. as we sit here tonight.

1079. We pray that we will

1080. really take these things on board

1081. that we will think about

  1082. this passage

1083. that we have looked at tonight

1084. and that as we go home

1085. we will put these things

  1086. into action

1087. and that we will act

  1088. and that we will

  1089. live radical lives

1090. and really make a difference

1091. in the world that we live in.

  1092. That people will see

  1093. that we are different

  1094. and want to know

  1095. why that is

1096. and that we will be

  1097. representatives of Jesus

1098. no matter what we are doing

1099. or where we find ourselves.

1100. We pray that as we

1101. open up for a discussion

  1102. that we will have

  1103. good discussions

  1104. and that

  1105. you'll bless the rest

  1106. of this evening.

  1107. We pray this

  1108. in Jesus name.

  1109. Amen.

  1110. We've got a couple

  1111. of questions up there

1112. but if you just want

1113. to get a tea or a coffee

1114. if you want one first

  1115. bring them back

  1116. to your table

1117. and then in a few minutes

  1118. if your table

  1119. is back together again

  1120. you can just discuss

  1121. the questions.

  1122. So we've got

  1123. how does the picture

  1124. of the church

1125. as Jesus presents it here

  1126. challenge us

  1127. considering how we are

  1128. often portrayed

  1129. and the second one

  1130. is what are some

  1131. of the opportunities

  1132. you have

1133. to be salt and light

  1134. representatives of Jesus

  1135. in your daily life.

  1136. and that

  1137. I know

  1138. you

  1139. I know

  1140. it

  1141. I know

  1142. I know
