  1. Now, Sabina, just before you sit down, I have one question for you.

  2. How can we best be praying for you this week?

  3. Well, I have a bit of a problem in that I really feel like I should donate to charity.

  4. And it's either £2,000 or £3,000.

  5. And I'm not quite sure.

  6. We're saving for a house, so I'm tending more towards the £2,000.

  7. But the charity does give you a lovely little emblem on their wall if you donate £3,000 or plus, which also sounds quite attractive.

  8. And also, I mean, maybe you can join me just fasting about this topic.

  9. It's weighing heavy on my heart.

  10. And I know that fasting is really difficult.

  11. And I'm not sure I'm even going to make it past the first day because it's just so exhausting with work and everything else that goes on.

  12. And, you know, we need the energy and the food.

  13. But maybe you'd like to join me in fasting too.

  14. So I'd really appreciate that.

  15. Now, I wonder if you were having that conversation with Sabina and she gave you that response.

  16. What would you think her motives are?

  17. So she's talking about doing good and doing right things, but for the wrong reasons.

  18. And that's what we see this evening in our passage in Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  19. People are doing the right things, but for the wrong reasons.

  20. So in chapter 5, Jesus was teaching the people about the law of God and correcting their misunderstandings and misapplications of the law.

  21. And that part of the Sermon of the Mount ended with the command in chapter 5, verse 48.

  22. You can look at there where it says,

  23. Be perfect therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  24. In the verses that we're looking at this evening, I hope that we will both be comforted and challenged.

  25. Because Matthew 6 acts like a mirror for our motives.

  26. We stand before it with all our religious and devotional practices.

  27. And we see that we're either doing things to serve the Lord,

  28. or we're doing them to be seen by others.

  29. What will we find this evening?

  30. Will we find a heart that desires to serve the Lord and therefore does the right things for the right reasons?

  31. Or will we find a heart that is stained by sin and that does the practices of giving,

  32. praying, and fasting, not for the glory and honor of God,

  33. but instead to receive honor and glory from mankind.

  34. So Jesus focuses on giving, praying, and fasting.

  35. And he is teaching that as Christians, as people who want to live lives that glorify him in every way,

  36. we need to do these things for the right reasons.

  37. But why does Jesus pick these things in particular?

  38. Why doesn't he focus on something else?

  39. I think Jesus picked these three topics because they were the religious practices of the day that were being abused.

  40. But these truths are timeless.

  41. These practices can be misused just as much today as they were back then.

  42. We can do and we should do the right things like giving, praying, and fasting,

  43. but we need to be doing them for the right reasons.

  44. And that is what Jesus is asking us this evening.

  45. Are you doing the right things for the right reasons?

  46. And look with me at verse 1.

  47. Jesus starts with an introductory comment that summarizes pretty much everything we're going to be speaking about this evening.

  48. In verse 1 he says,

  49. Now this is a sober warning for every Christian.

  50. The practices of righteousness that Jesus is speaking about are the religious act of devotion to God.

  51. These practices should not be done so that other people can see us and give us praise,

  52. but they are to be done for our Father in heaven.

  53. Now this doesn't mean that people won't see us doing these things.

  54. I hope that everyone on this earth sees or hears a Christian live out their faith during their everyday life.

  55. Jesus isn't telling us to go run to the hills and hide in caves away from everyone else,

  56. but he's shining light on our motives.

  57. These practices of righteousness are the good and right things that Christians should be doing,

  58. but we need to do them for the glory of our Heavenly Father.

  59. And so in verse 2, and in verses 2 to 4, Jesus speaks about giving.

  60. And he hones in on this topic, but do you notice he doesn't wade in gently.

  61. There is no sugarcoating on this teaching.

  62. It flies right in the face of the wrong motives and practices that were at play in his day and that are at play today.

  63. This week I had a quick search on the internet and discovered that the two topics that make most British people feel uncomfortable,

  64. the two topics that people try to avoid are religion and money.

  65. We spend so much of our lives working, saving, budgeting, worrying about how much money we need to save for that house,

  66. for that car, for that holiday.

  67. And those are all good things.

  68. But how often do we take time to think about giving?

  69. Now this isn't talking about just giving a few pounds to a homeless person as you walk to work.

  70. But this is calculated giving.

  71. You've sat down and you've thought about it properly.

  72. And notice how Jesus starts in verse 2.

  73. When you give.

  74. So Jesus expects people to give of their finances as a sign of their devotion to and love for the Lord.

  75. He could have started with if you give.

  76. But he started with when you give.

  77. And two kinds of giving are mentioned here.

  78. Religious giving in verse 2 and giving to the needy in verse 3.

  79. So for us you have giving to the church and giving to those in need.

  80. In verse 2, read along with me.

  81. He says,

  82. When you give, do not announce it with trumpets as the hypocrites do.

  83. Now why do they announce it with trumpets?

  84. To be honoured by others.

  85. We've all seen this, haven't we?

  86. Companies that have billions of billions of pounds in revenue

  87. hold a press conference to hand over a check to a charity.

  88. Celebrities take selfies in soup kitchens on Christmas day.

  89. Or more everyday examples.

  90. People bragging about how much they donate to charities

  91. or casually dropping it in a conversation here and there.

  92. Or people going forward during collection in a church,

  93. not once, not twice, but three times,

  94. making sure that people see them.

  95. Now these are all good things that we should be doing,

  96. but are they being done for the right reason?

  97. Jesus says that people do this to be honoured by others.

  98. And the original word there that the NIV translates as honoured

  99. is better translated as praise or worship.

  100. So these hypocrites want to be worshipped for their giving.

  101. They're seeking the attention and glory instead of giving it to God.

  102. But I think if we're all honest, we struggle with this one.

  103. Our sinful hearts want to receive all the praise from those around us.

  104. We don't want to naturally give it to God.

  105. In verses 3, Jesus says,

  106. When you give, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

  107. so that your giving may be in secret.

  108. Now people have used this verse to argue for absolute secrecy.

  109. But if you look at it in its context of the whole chapter,

  110. you see Jesus warning people not to glorify or draw attention to their giving.

  111. So it's not that we need to hide our giving and almost be ashamed of it,

  112. but we aren't to draw attention to it.

  113. Jesus is saying, forget about yourself when you give.

  114. Instead, give to and give for God.

  115. Do not glorify your service to God, but glorify God as you serve him.

  116. Now we can look at this passage and we can think,

  117. well, I never do any of those things.

  118. But how often do we walk past a homeless person

  119. or a person in need on the street without thinking?

  120. How often do we think more about our savings

  121. than we do our spendings for the kingdom of God?

  122. Or flip that on its head.

  123. Have you ever given thanks publicly

  124. for how God has been blessing you,

  125. maybe financially or spiritually,

  126. since you started giving more to the church?

  127. What are the real motives in our hearts at those times?

  128. Are we really doing the right things for the right reasons?

  129. All of our money comes from God.

  130. It is not our own.

  131. And so our attitude should be that of sacrificial giving

  132. for the good of the kingdom,

  133. for the good of people,

  134. and to glorify God in every single way.

  135. That's what giving for the right reason looks like.

  136. And then in verses five to eight,

  137. Jesus speaks about praying.

  138. Now notice again the same expectation

  139. that Jesus has of his followers in verse five.

  140. When you pray, do not.

  141. So Jesus is warning his listeners and us today

  142. of the dangers of doing the right things

  143. for the wrong reasons.

  144. There are some, like Jesus says in all three of these sections,

  145. who are hypocrites.

  146. They love to stand in the public eye

  147. and pray for all to see and hear.

  148. This doesn't mean that it's wrong to pray standing up

  149. or to pray in public.

  150. That was common practice among Jews in Jesus' time.

  151. A devout Jew would have prayed

  152. during three set times a day.

  153. And that would mean that you probably would see

  154. at some point people praying in the street.

  155. That isn't the problem.

  156. Jesus isn't condemning public prayer.

  157. But notice that four letter word in verse five, love.

  158. These hypocrites love to be seen praying publicly.

  159. They stand up and make themselves stand out

  160. to be praised by others.

  161. So the problem isn't public prayer,

  162. but it's the reason behind it.

  163. And the challenge for us is to reflect

  164. on our own prayer lives.

  165. Do you pray out loud in a church meeting

  166. so that you can use that new theological word

  167. that you've been sitting on for two weeks?

  168. Or to use that passage

  169. that you've just spent a month memorizing from scripture?

  170. Now, all of these are good things

  171. that we should be doing.

  172. But our motivation,

  173. if our motivation is to be praised by others,

  174. then we're doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

  175. One element of a healthy prayer life

  176. is submission to God

  177. and recognition that we can do nothing outside of him.

  178. And these hypocrites were doing the exact opposite.

  179. Their prayers didn't humble them,

  180. but they puffed them up.

  181. So we need to watch our motives

  182. because this is a very, very easy trap

  183. for us to fall into.

  184. We start to think

  185. how others are hearing our prayers

  186. rather than how our Heavenly Father

  187. is hearing our prayer.

  188. And in verse seven,

  189. look with me,

  190. you get another when you do not.

  191. Now this verse suggests

  192. that the hypocrites filled their prayers

  193. with worthless words.

  194. Jesus uses the illustration of pagans

  195. because when they prayed,

  196. they would have repeated the names

  197. of their gods and other words

  198. over and over and over again.

  199. We'd probably call it chanting today

  200. rather than praying.

  201. If you want an example of this,

  202. go home and read 1 Kings chapter 18,

    1 Kings 18 chapter mention

  203. where the prophets of Baal and Elijah

  204. are on top of a mountain

  205. and they're testing who has more power,

  206. the God of Israel

  207. or the false god Baal.

  208. And so they kill a bull

  209. and they put it on top of some wood

  210. and the prophets of Baal

  211. go in circles,

  212. chanting,

  213. beating themselves,

  214. calling and begging

  215. for their false gods

  216. to answer them

  217. for hours on end.

  218. But nothing happens.

  219. And Elijah throws water on the wood

  220. and prays

  221. and in seconds,

  222. God answers.

  223. There are religions today

  224. where people pray

  225. and repeat certain phrases

  226. or have certain stances

  227. when they pray.

  228. They raise their voice,

  229. they cut themselves,

  230. they make parades

  231. and hold huge feasts

  232. for false gods

  233. who have no ears to hear,

  234. who have no eyes

  235. to see what their people are doing

  236. and who have no mouths

  237. to eat or to speak to them.

  238. So the hypocrites of Jesus' day

  239. were piling tons of eloquent phrases

  240. into their prayer,

  241. almost mindlessly repeating things

  242. in order to be seen by others.

  243. But do you see

  244. how in this whole bit

  245. there is no mention

  246. of their private prayer life?

  247. They seem to only reserve their prayers

  248. for when they're in public,

  249. for when people are around

  250. and people can hear them.

  251. They're praying to people,

  252. they're not praying to God.

  253. And I don't think we can sit back

  254. and think that this is irrelevant for us.

  255. This should challenge

  256. the way we view

  257. and practice prayer.

  258. Prayer is the way we communicate

  259. with our Heavenly Father.

  260. And so our attitude to

  261. and our prayer lives

  262. should be one of devotion to God

  263. and a desire to glorify Him

  264. in every way.

  265. So how is your prayer life?

  266. It's easy, isn't it,

  267. to convince people around us

  268. that we're doing well

  269. and that we pray regularly.

  270. We tell people

  271. that we'll pray for them

  272. as we leave the Sunday services.

  273. But do we actually do it?

  274. Now maybe we don't fill our prayers

  275. with meaningless repetition,

  276. but how often do we use

  277. beautiful language

  278. that we know people want to hear?

  279. Instead of thinking

  280. how others see our prayer life,

  281. we should focus on

  282. how God sees our prayer life.

  283. That means that we shouldn't shy away

  284. from praying publicly

  285. because we maybe feel inadequate

  286. or we feel that we don't pray

  287. beautifully enough.

  288. Instead, we should focus on God

  289. and praying to Him

  290. like we would if we were sitting

  291. at our kitchen table at home

  292. reading our Bibles in the morning.

  293. We should be doing the right things

  294. for the right reasons.

  295. We should be praying to God

  296. because we are told to in His Word

  297. and we should be doing it

  298. both publicly and privately.

  299. And the two should be the same.

  300. We should not,

  301. we should be coming before the Lord,

  302. laying ourselves bare before Him,

  303. confessing our sins,

  304. praising Him for His goodness,

  305. bringing our daily needs before Him

  306. and in assurance,

  307. knowing that He is a Father

  308. who loves,

  309. who cares,

  310. and who listens to us.

  311. in the case of public prayer,

  312. we need to forget ourselves

  313. and focus on glorifying God.

  314. That is what it means

  315. to do the right thing

  316. for the right reason.

  317. And then in verses 16 to 18,

  318. Jesus speaks about fasting.

  319. Now fasting is a topic

  320. that seems to be sidelined

  321. in many churches today.

  322. And I wonder if the majority

  323. of Christians around the world

  324. live as if these verses don't exist.

  325. But fasting is a religious

  326. and devotional practice

  327. that we see in the Bible.

  328. We cannot ignore it.

  329. We see it in the Old Testament law.

  330. Israel were to fast

  331. for certain days a year.

  332. In Isaiah chapter 58,

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  333. God corrects Israel

  334. for how they had twisted fasting

  335. and used it to lord themselves

  336. over others.

  337. The Pharisees fasted twice a week.

  338. John the Baptist's followers

  339. fasted often.

  340. Jesus himself fasted for 40 days

  341. and 40 nights in the wilderness.

  342. He teaches on fasting

  343. in these verses

  344. and in Matthew 9,

    Matthew 9:14–17

  345. verses 14 to 17.

  346. In Acts and in the New Testament letters,

  347. we see examples

  348. of the apostles' fasting.

  349. So we cannot ignore this topic.

  350. And again,

  351. Jesus starts in verse 16

  352. with the same expectation.

  353. When you fast,

  354. do not.

  355. And it's very basic definition.

  356. Fasting is the abstinence from food.

  357. The Bible uses different ideas

  358. of why we should fast

  359. and its purpose.

  360. So we fast in eager anticipation

  361. of Jesus' return.

  362. We fast as an example

  363. of our self-discipline

  364. and self-denial.

  365. We fast as a way

  366. of humbling ourselves

  367. which leads us to rely

  368. and depend more on God.

  369. And we fast

  370. so that we can spend more time

  371. in God's word

  372. and praying to him.

  373. But the hypocrites

  374. that Jesus is speaking to

  375. had distorted fasting

  376. for their own glorification.

  377. read with me

  378. verse 16.

  379. When you fast,

  380. do not look somber

  381. as the hypocrites do

  382. for they disfigure their faces

  383. to show others

  384. they are fasting.

  385. The word used in the NIV

  386. for somber

  387. could be translated

  388. as gloomy.

  389. So the hypocrites

  390. were doing

  391. a religious

  392. act of devotion

  393. but you can imagine

  394. them walking down

  395. the street one day

  396. clutching their stomachs

  397. moaning

  398. every second

  399. until someone

  400. finally asked

  401. the question

  402. they've been waiting for.

  403. What's wrong

  404. with you today?

  405. And then they kick in.

  406. Oh, I'm just fasting.

  407. Don't you worry about me.

  408. I'm just giving up food

  409. as a sign

  410. of how holy I am

  411. and to prove to God

  412. that I can do it.

  413. And then come the comments.

  414. Oh, good for you.

  415. You're such a good Christian.

  416. I wish I could do that.

  417. I can't even go one hour

  418. without food.

  419. Never mind one day.

  420. But they took it even further.

  421. It appears from verse 17

  422. that they purposefully

  423. did not wash their face

  424. or make themselves presentable

  425. because they wanted people

  426. to ask them

  427. what was wrong.

  428. They wanted an excuse

  429. to toot their own horn

  430. about how holy they are.

  431. So instead of

  432. what we would normally do

  433. before we leave the house

  434. checking in the mirror

  435. making sure we're okay

  436. and we look presentable,

  437. they checked the mirror

  438. before they left

  439. to make sure

  440. they were scruffy enough.

  441. Much like the children's story

  442. of Snow White

  443. and the queen

  444. who had a mirror

  445. and that she looked in

  446. every day

  447. and asked mirror,

  448. mirror on the wall

  449. who is the fairest

  450. of them all.

  451. All is well

  452. as long as the mirror

  453. replies you are.

  454. But when the mirror

  455. responds one day

  456. with Snow White is,

  457. the truth comes out

  458. and reveals the wickedness

  459. and jealousy

  460. of the queen.

  461. The mirror revealed

  462. inner ugliness.

  463. And these hypocrites

  464. did the opposite.

  465. They looked in the mirror

  466. to make sure

  467. they did not look nice.

  468. To make sure

  469. that people could tell

  470. they were fasting.

  471. Their mirror

  472. would display

  473. outward signs

  474. of ugliness.

  475. But it revealed

  476. the same thing.

  477. They had ugliness

  478. of the heart.

  479. Their hearts

  480. were in the wrong

  481. and they focused

  482. on themselves

  483. not on God.

  484. Jesus says

  485. let your fasting

  486. go unseen

  487. by others

  488. because the only one

  489. who matters

  490. is God

  491. and he sees

  492. everything.

  493. Jesus says

  494. forget about yourself

  495. and fast

  496. for God

  497. and his glory.

  498. So the challenge

  499. here is

  500. do you fast?

  501. Jesus expects

  502. his followers

  503. to.

  504. Now he doesn't

  505. give us a timetable

  506. or a set period

  507. that we need

  508. to fast for

  509. but the truth

  510. is that he

  511. expects us to

  512. and that means

  513. we cannot ignore

  514. these verses.

  515. I'd encourage

  516. you to go home

  517. and think about this.

  518. Read Isaiah 58.

  519. Read Jesus' words

  520. in Matthew 9

  521. and with wisdom

  522. put into practice

  523. what Jesus

  524. is teaching us here.

  525. Now these are

  526. three big

  527. and practical

  528. topics

  529. that Jesus

  530. expects us

  531. to do

  532. as his followers.

  533. Giving

  534. praying

  535. and fasting

  536. are the right

  537. things for us

  538. to do as Christians

  539. but are we

  540. doing them

  541. for the right

  542. reasons?

  543. We should

  544. forget about

  545. ourselves

  546. and focus

  547. on God.

  548. Doing

  549. these things

  550. for the right

  551. reasons mean

  552. that we do

  553. them for God

  554. and not

  555. for the praise

  556. of others.

  557. But this

  558. also means

  559. that it is

  560. not our

  561. place to

  562. question

  563. other people's

  564. motives.

  565. Jesus is

  566. challenging

  567. every individual

  568. to look in

  569. themselves.

  570. It is not

  571. our place

  572. to stand

  573. in judgment

  574. of someone

  575. else's motives.

  576. The question

  577. that we need

  578. to walk away

  579. from this

  580. evening

  581. from Matthew

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  582. chapter 6

  583. is are we

  584. doing the

  585. right things

  586. for the

  587. right reasons?

  588. Let's pray

  589. together.

  590. Father, we

  591. come before

  592. you the

  593. God who

  594. sees, who

  595. knows all

  596. things.

  597. You know

  598. our thoughts,

  599. you know

  600. our actions

  601. and you know

  602. our motives.

  603. and we

  604. ask you

  605. for forgiveness

  606. for the

  607. times that

  608. we have

  609. done good

  610. things,

  611. right things

  612. for the

  613. wrong reasons.

  614. We pray

  615. that you

  616. would help

  617. us leave

  618. this building

  619. this evening

  620. encouraged by

  621. our discussions,

  622. uplifted by

  623. our prayer

  624. time,

  625. and with a

  626. new desire

  627. to do

  628. right things

  629. for the

  630. right reasons.

  631. that

  632. everything we

  633. do would

  634. be done

  635. for your

  636. glory,

  637. for the

  638. upbuilding

  639. of your

  640. kingdom,

  641. and for

  642. the praise

  643. of your

  644. holy and

  645. precious name.

  646. Amen.

  647. We're going

  648. to have a

  649. few minutes

  650. break now

  651. where you

  652. can grab a

  653. tea or

  654. coffee and

  655. then we're

  656. going to

  657. come back

  658. and have

  659. a discussion.

  660. So I've

  661. got two

  662. questions for

  663. us to think

  664. about when we

  665. come back

  666. and they

  667. are,

  668. why can

  669. these

  670. three topics

  671. be difficult

  672. to live

  673. out and

  674. which is

  675. most difficult

  676. for you

  677. and why?

  678. So I kind

  679. of cheated

  680. there's three

  681. questions in

  682. that one but

  683. we'll pass it

  684. off as one

  685. question.

  686. And then the

  687. second one,

  688. what are

  689. other righteous

  690. acts that we

  691. can do today

  692. for the wrong

  693. reasons?

  694. So just take a

  695. few minutes,

  696. go grab tea,

  697. coffee and I

  698. think there's

  699. still some

  700. nibbles back

  701. there and then

  702. I'll call us

  703. all back for

  704. discussion around

  705. our tables.
