  1. I want to start off this evening by asking you a question.

  2. What is your house like when you have guests?

  3. So we've just finished the few days of Christmas celebrations.

  4. Thousands upon thousands of houses across the UK would have been entertaining guests.

  5. Shopping done days in advance.

  6. Time taken to perfect the meal plan.

  7. Cleaning and tidying non-stop right up until the minute the doorbell goes.

  8. Restrictions maybe on which room occupants of the house can go into and which they can't.

  9. Does any of that sound familiar for you guys over the last few days?

  10. So when we have guests, my wife Sabina and I usually cook and tidy the house together.

  11. So we do the hoovering, the dusting, we fold the blankets on the couches in the living room,

  12. we puff up the pillows and then we set the table and so on.

  13. And once all of those preparations are done, we can't really sit on the couch just in case we make it look untidy again.

  14. Because everything needs to be in perfect order for our guests arriving.

  15. That's what it's like when we have guests, isn't it?

  16. We want to have a nice home.

  17. We want our guests to feel welcome.

  18. We want our guests to feel appreciated and things to go as well as possible.

  19. But if that's how we act when we have friends and family around for dinner,

  20. imagine how different the preparations would be and even more they would be

  21. if we had Jesus coming around to share a meal with us.

  22. Our preparations would be more than a hundred times that, wouldn't they?

  23. Well, that's the scene that we get an insight into this evening as we look at Luke chapter 10 together.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  24. And tonight we're going to see two different people, two different sisters,

  25. and how they respond to having Jesus as a guest in their home.

  26. So if you have a Bible, please turn with me to Luke chapter 10,

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  27. and we'll start reading from verse 38.

  28. Luke chapter 10, verses 38 to 42.

    Luke 10:38–42

  29. As Jesus and his disciples were on their way,

  30. he came to a town, to a village,

  31. where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.

  32. She had a sister called Mary who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said.

  33. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.

  34. She came to him and asked,

  35. Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself?

  36. Tell her to help me.

  37. Martha, Martha, the Lord answered,

  38. You are worried and upset about many things,

  39. but few things are needed, or indeed only one.

  40. Mary has chosen what is better,

  41. and it will not be taken away from her.

  42. Let's pray.

  43. Father, may the meditations of our hearts and the words of my mouth be pleasing to you,

  44. our rock and our redeemer.

  45. Amen.

  46. These verses are part of the traveling narrative of Jesus.

  47. So his public ministry has begun,

  48. and he's gathered a bit of a following now.

  49. His disciples are with him,

  50. and he has a big, big crowd.

  51. And you see that from the beginning of chapter 10,

  52. as he sends out the 72.

  53. But this is still early on in Jesus' ministry,

  54. and journey towards Jerusalem.

  55. Luke mentions that in chapter 9, verse 51,

  56. that Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem.

  57. Meaning that every step he took,

  58. he was walking towards the cross.

  59. All the while teaching his disciples,

  60. preparing them for the day that he would no longer be with them.

  61. And calling them to live lives which glorify God.

  62. And that's where our verses come in this evening.

  63. They're sandwiched between two exemplary sections of Luke's gospel.

  64. Directly before it, we have the well-known parable of the Good Samaritan,

  65. where Jesus is teaching his disciples,

  66. and calling them to love their neighbors.

  67. Calling his disciples to be caring,

  68. attentive, loving, and sacrificial to those around them.

  69. And then directly after our little passage,

  70. is the Lord's Prayer,

  71. where Jesus is teaching his disciples how to pray,

  72. saying that we pray to God and God alone.

  73. That we come before him with genuine hearts and rely on him.

  74. And that we come before him with reverence,

  75. because he is God and we are not.

  76. And we come before him in humility,

  77. acknowledging that all things come from him.

  78. And so maybe you're sitting there thinking,

  79. well, why on earth is he going on about all of this?

  80. Well, I'm mentioning all of this

  81. because it gives us the important context

  82. that we need to look at and understand our passage for this evening.

  83. Knowing the context helps us see

  84. the main point and focus of our passage,

  85. which is the priorities of a disciple.

  86. The priorities of a disciple.

  87. Now, I chose this passage this evening

  88. because I think

  89. that going into a new year,

  90. how different would our lives be?

  91. What are our goals?

  92. What are the things that we want

  93. to give our time to in 2020?

  94. The best thing for us to do

  95. is to have the priorities of a disciple, isn't it?

  96. The best we can do,

  97. the best way we can live

  98. is according to God's word

  99. and how it sets out the priorities of a disciple.

  100. So tonight we're going to see

  101. those two different responses

  102. to Jesus in this passage.

  103. So Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem

  104. and comes to the village

  105. where Mary and Martha live

  106. with their brother Lazarus.

  107. And we know that from other gospels.

  108. But Lazarus doesn't really appear

  109. in this section.

  110. We know the village as Bethany.

  111. It's on the main road

  112. between Galilee and Jerusalem,

  113. just a few miles away

  114. from Jesus' destination.

  115. And this was a family

  116. that Jesus held very dear.

  117. And so we can assume

  118. that he was a frequent guest

  119. at their table.

  120. Both of these sisters,

  121. Mary and Martha,

  122. are disciples of Jesus.

  123. Both of them seem to understand

  124. to an extent who he is.

  125. So Jesus walks into the town

  126. in verse 38.

  127. And you can already imagine

  128. the hustle and bustle

  129. as the news spreads

  130. like wildfire of his arrival,

  131. can't you?

  132. Jesus,

  133. the one who's been teaching

  134. and doing many signs

  135. and wonders through the whole of Israel,

  136. has now come to our little town

  137. of Bethany.

  138. All the people are wanting to gather

  139. and hear this famous teacher.

  140. And so he arrives

  141. and in verse 38,

  142. he's invited back

  143. to Mary and Martha's house

  144. by Martha.

  145. So let's think a little bit

  146. about Martha

  147. and her response

  148. to having Jesus

  149. as a house guest

  150. and see what it teaches us

  151. about the priorities

  152. of a disciple.

  153. Now having people around

  154. for dinner naturally means

  155. there's work to do,

  156. doesn't it?

  157. You've got all the preparations

  158. beforehand,

  159. the need doing,

  160. the cooking and the tidying,

  161. but on top of that,

  162. you've got the work

  163. that you need to put in

  164. when the guests

  165. are actually in the house.

  166. And remember that

  167. in Jesus' day,

  168. you couldn't exactly

  169. pick up the phone

  170. and tell people

  171. you were leaving the house

  172. so they knew

  173. approximately when you'd arrive.

  174. And you couldn't drop

  175. a text saying

  176. that you're five minutes away

  177. to do the last minute preparations.

  178. And so in this time,

  179. when the guests arrived,

  180. it would be straight

  181. into hostess mode.

  182. And that's what Martha does.

  183. She's willing to serve.

  184. She's maybe the hospitable type

  185. and enjoys making her guests

  186. happy and catered for.

  187. So she's running around

  188. getting things ready.

  189. But then the situation

  190. turns a little bit awkward

  191. in verse 40,

  192. doesn't it?

  193. Look what it says.

  194. But Martha was distracted

  195. by all the preparations

  196. that had to be made.

  197. She came to him,

  198. that is Jesus,

  199. and asked,

  200. Lord, don't you care

  201. that my sisters left me

  202. to do all the work

  203. by myself?

  204. Tell her to help me.

  205. Now at this point,

  206. people can be quite harsh

  207. on Martha

  208. and say that she was wrong

  209. because she was preparing

  210. things for Jesus

  211. and his followers.

  212. But the fact

  213. that she was preparing

  214. things is not bad at all.

  215. The negative thing

  216. about this situation

  217. is that she's let

  218. her preparations

  219. distract her

  220. from Jesus

  221. and his teaching.

  222. That's what Matthew

  223. draws our attention to

  224. in verse 40.

  225. The problem isn't

  226. that she's preparing things.

  227. The problem is

  228. that she's distracted.

  229. Martha is working

  230. so hard for Jesus

  231. that she's actually

  232. distracted from

  233. his presence

  234. in the house.

  235. So the problem

  236. isn't service.

  237. It's that she's

  238. been engulfed in it

  239. and she's taken

  240. her eyes off of Jesus.

  241. Now there obviously

  242. isn't a direct

  243. line of application

  244. here because

  245. I can't imagine

  246. any of us

  247. are having Jesus

  248. around for a meal

  249. in the new year.

  250. However,

  251. many of us

  252. are in Christian service

  253. to a degree.

  254. Maybe it's preaching.

  255. Maybe it's leading services.

  256. Maybe it's helping

  257. with children's work.

  258. Maybe it's leading

  259. the music.

  260. Maybe it's on the

  261. welcome team

  262. or tea and coffee.

  263. Maybe it's part of

  264. the food and events team.

  265. Whatever it is.

  266. Whatever kind of role

  267. you have in church

  268. you probably know

  269. how easy it is for us

  270. to get so involved

  271. in that service

  272. that we actually

  273. seem to forget

  274. that we're doing

  275. all of it for Jesus.

  276. We forget the very person

  277. we should be serving.

  278. It's so easy

  279. isn't it

  280. to dive into

  281. serving God

  282. and the church

  283. that we can become

  284. grumpy

  285. and grumble

  286. at those

  287. who don't serve

  288. as much as we do.

  289. But what exactly

  290. is the problem

  291. in that situation?

  292. Well often the problem

  293. is found

  294. in our own hearts

  295. because it reveals

  296. that we're

  297. maybe serving

  298. for the sake

  299. of serving

  300. rather than serving

  301. out of an act

  302. of devotion

  303. and worship

  304. to the Lord.

  305. Now don't get me wrong

  306. this is not an excuse

  307. for laziness

  308. in regards

  309. to serving God.

  310. This isn't a call

  311. for all of us

  312. to put down tools

  313. and do nothing

  314. but it is a call

  315. for us

  316. to ask ourselves

  317. the very important question

  318. in my service

  319. for Jesus

  320. what are my priorities?

  321. Am I serving Him

  322. out of love

  323. and devotion

  324. or am I serving Him

  325. because I want

  326. to be seen

  327. because I want

  328. to be recognized

  329. or out of some

  330. unwilling sense

  331. of duty?

  332. The reality is

  333. that all of our service

  334. for God

  335. and the church

  336. should be done

  337. out of devotion

  338. to Him

  339. out of a love

  340. for Him

  341. and His people.

  342. Martha's frustration

  343. with Mary

  344. is normal

  345. for those

  346. who so sacrificially

  347. serve with very

  348. good intentions

  349. but who sometimes

  350. forget that they too

  351. need to sit

  352. at the feet

  353. of Jesus.

  354. I read a missionary

  355. book a while back

  356. and in it

  357. the missionary

  358. was explaining

  359. how his ministry

  360. was growing

  361. and growing

  362. and thriving

  363. people coming

  364. to faith

  365. and it was wonderful

  366. but then he

  367. became really sober

  368. and he said

  369. ministry became

  370. an idol.

  371. He focused

  372. on the ministry

  373. as opposed

  374. to the master.

  375. He was so focused

  376. on doing things

  377. that it distracted

  378. him from Jesus

  379. and I think

  380. that that is

  381. a real danger

  382. that all of us

  383. need to be

  384. on the lookout

  385. for.

  386. Sometimes we need

  387. to take a step

  388. back

  389. and look

  390. at the big

  391. picture

  392. because we can

  393. keep ourselves

  394. so busy

  395. with church life

  396. can't we?

  397. We can fill

  398. our diaries

  399. and run around

  400. non-stop

  401. but how often

  402. do we recognize

  403. that we too

  404. need to sit

  405. at the feet

  406. of Jesus

  407. and just learn?

  408. The priorities

  409. of a disciple

  410. shouldn't be

  411. busyness

  412. and distraction

  413. from Jesus

  414. but they should

  415. be devotion

  416. to him

  417. and service

  418. out of a love

  419. for him.

  420. And that's

  421. what Jesus

  422. says to Martha

  423. in the most

  424. loving and gentle

  425. rebuke in verse 41.

  426. Jesus says

  427. Martha

  428. Martha

  429. you're worried

  430. and upset

  431. about many things

  432. but few things

  433. are needed

  434. or indeed

  435. only one.

  436. Mary has chosen

  437. what is better

  438. and it will not

  439. be taken away

  440. from her.

  441. Now Jesus

  442. isn't rebuking

  443. Martha harshly

  444. for not sitting

  445. at his feet

  446. and learning

  447. but he's

  448. encouraging her.

  449. You can imagine

  450. the scene

  451. can't you?

  452. Jesus sitting

  453. on a wooden

  454. bench

  455. in the garden

  456. surrounded

  457. by people

  458. keenly

  459. listening

  460. intently

  461. hanging on

  462. every single

  463. word that

  464. comes out

  465. of his mouth

  466. and then he

  467. sees Martha

  468. working away

  469. in the background

  470. and he catches

  471. her eye

  472. and says

  473. Martha

  474. everything's

  475. fine.

  476. Don't worry

  477. about the

  478. to-do list

  479. that you've

  480. set for

  481. yourself

  482. just come

  483. here

  484. sit

  485. join us

  486. I've saved

  487. you a seat.

  488. It's so easy

  489. for us to

  490. become engulfed

  491. in our working

  492. and serving

  493. that we become

  494. distracted.

  495. But imagine

  496. if going into

  497. this new year

  498. our priority

  499. wasn't filling

  500. our time

  501. with things

  502. that need

  503. doing

  504. imagine if

  505. we didn't

  506. have another

  507. year

  508. where we're

  509. distracted

  510. from Jesus

  511. because we're

  512. too busy

  513. to sit

  514. and learn

  515. imagine if

  516. we went

  517. into this

  518. year

  519. deliberately

  520. making time

  521. to sit

  522. at the feet

  523. of Jesus

  524. and learn

  525. that's what

  526. Mary did

  527. that's what

  528. the second

  529. sister did

  530. so let's

  531. think about

  532. Mary

  533. and what

  534. she can

  535. teach us

  536. about the

  537. priorities

  538. of a

  539. disciple

  540. now two

  541. things are

  542. mentioned in

  543. this passage

  544. about Mary

  545. firstly in

  546. verse 39

  547. we're given

  548. the detail

  549. that she's

  550. sitting at

  551. the Lord's

  552. feet listening

  553. to what he

  554. said

  555. and then

  556. secondly in

  557. verse 41

  558. Jesus says

  559. Mary has

  560. chosen what

  561. is better

  562. and none

  563. of it will

  564. be taken

  565. away from

  566. her

  567. now Mary

  568. is sat

  569. at the

  570. feet of

  571. Jesus

  572. a position

  573. of a

  574. student

  575. learning

  576. from their

  577. master

  578. this is the

  579. posture of a

  580. disciple who's

  581. learning from

  582. their Lord

  583. have you ever

  584. watched little

  585. children

  586. and how they

  587. copy those

  588. around them

  589. children learn

  590. to do everyday

  591. things by

  592. watching their

  593. parents in

  594. action all

  595. the time

  596. sure they need

  597. a little bit of

  598. help in the

  599. beginning in the

  600. early years but

  601. as time goes

  602. on they become

  603. more and more

  604. independent they

  605. become competent

  606. and able to

  607. copy what their

  608. parents have

  609. done that's how

  610. we learn that's

  611. why when children

  612. are young parents

  613. are even more

  614. careful than

  615. normal not to

  616. show any bad

  617. habits in front

  618. of them because

  619. they soak up

  620. everything like a

  621. sponge we're

  622. born with that

  623. natural instinct to

  624. sit and learn it

  625. is how we learn

  626. by default it

  627. is how we grow

  628. and develop and

  629. that's why one of

  630. the priorities of

  631. a disciple should

  632. be to sit at the

  633. feet of Jesus

  634. like a child

  635. listen to every

  636. single word that

  637. he says

  638. imitate at him

  639. as we live

  640. according to his

  641. priorities

  642. like children we

  643. need to soak in

  644. the word of God

  645. so that we can

  646. grow into mature

  647. believers whether

  648. you're nine or

  649. ninety there is

  650. always growth

  651. and that's what

  652. Mary's doing

  653. she is sitting at

  654. the feet of Jesus

  655. with the rest of

  656. his followers soaking

  657. in his teaching and

  658. wisdom

  659. so what does this

  660. convey about Mary

  661. well it shows us

  662. that she had faith

  663. and some kind of

  664. understanding of who

  665. Jesus is

  666. it shows us that

  667. she was willing to

  668. submit to his

  669. teaching and act

  670. on it

  671. willing to live

  672. out his teaching

  673. and it shows us

  674. that she loved

  675. Jesus and wanted

  676. to serve him

  677. she was one of

  678. his followers

  679. her posture

  680. sitting at the

  681. feet of Jesus

  682. shows us that

  683. Mary loved the

  684. Lord

  685. loved his word

  686. and wanted to be

  687. the best disciple

  688. that she could be

  689. now imagine if

  690. that was our

  691. priority as we

  692. look into the

  693. new year

  694. imagine if

  695. from the very

  696. beginning of

  697. 2020 we make

  698. a conscious

  699. decision to

  700. submit to the

  701. word of the

  702. Lord as revealed

  703. in the Bible

  704. and live in

  705. such a way that

  706. we give God

  707. all the glory

  708. imagine if we

  709. had just an

  710. ounce of what

  711. we see in

  712. Mary as she

  713. left all of her

  714. worries behind

  715. and just sat

  716. at the feet of

  717. Jesus

  718. if we did

  719. this I think

  720. our devotional

  721. lives would be

  722. healthier because

  723. we wouldn't be

  724. trying to squeeze

  725. in that five

  726. minute Bible

  727. reading and

  728. prayer in the

  729. morning but we

  730. consciously take

  731. time to reflect on

  732. God's word and

  733. submit to it even

  734. though it will make

  735. us uncomfortable

  736. if we actually

  737. take time to be

  738. listeners and doers

  739. of God's word then

  740. we will be more

  741. open and available

  742. for the Lord to use

  743. us to share the

  744. gospel to share the

  745. good news of Jesus

  746. with people to be

  747. his witnesses to

  748. the world and we

  749. will be more joyful

  750. in our service

  751. if we took a leaf

  752. out of Mary's book

  753. and invest time in

  754. listening to the

  755. Lord then I think

  756. we'd be more devoted

  757. to him

  758. again this doesn't

  759. mean that we only

  760. listen and do

  761. nothing

  762. it doesn't mean

  763. that we can sit

  764. back and relax

  765. but it means that we

  766. become active

  767. listeners of the

  768. word of the Lord

  769. though we come

  770. under the authority

  771. of the Bible and

  772. live

  773. life in such a

  774. way that glorifies

  775. him the life that

  776. we're called to

  777. live we are called

  778. to be perfect

  779. because he is

  780. perfect

  781. by doing that

  782. Jesus says we're

  783. doing a good thing

  784. in verse 42

  785. Jesus says of

  786. Mary Mary has

  787. chosen what is

  788. better and it

  789. will not be taken

  790. away from her

  791. now again this is

  792. part of that loving

  793. and gentle rebuke

  794. of Martha but it

  795. tells us a little

  796. bit about Mary's

  797. priorities and the

  798. priorities that

  799. Jesus wants for his

  800. disciples Mary chose

  801. what was better

  802. meaning that her

  803. decision to sit to

  804. listen and to learn

  805. from Jesus was a

  806. better choice than

  807. preparing him a meal

  808. it was better because

  809. Jesus was only with

  810. them for a short

  811. while because soon

  812. the day would come

  813. when he wouldn't be

  814. around anymore and

  815. the opportunity to

  816. learn from him would

  817. be gone it was

  818. better because Mary

  819. was spending time in

  820. the presence of Jesus

  821. God in the flesh and

  822. learning from him

  823. we've just come through

  824. a few busy days of

  825. celebration and we're

  826. going into what will

  827. undoubtedly be another

  828. busy year so why not

  829. take time take a few

  830. minutes this evening or

  831. tomorrow or whenever you

  832. get a chance and just

  833. sit under the Lord's

  834. teaching sit under the

  835. authority of the Bible

  836. ask for God to be at

  837. work in your life ask for

  838. his spirit to continue

  839. that transformational work

  840. in you and ask that God

  841. would help you submit to

  842. him ask for strength to

  843. live as a good disciple

  844. whose desire is to see

  845. God glorified pray for

  846. spiritual growth and

  847. maturity pray that you'd

  848. prioritize God and his

  849. kingdom in the year that

  850. is coming just take that

  851. little bit of time before

  852. the mayhem begins to sit at

  853. the Lord's feet and Jesus

  854. says that it will not be

  855. taken away now we can assume

  856. based on the context that

  857. Jesus is speaking about

  858. Mary listening to him and

  859. the relationship that she

  860. has with him he is saying

  861. that Mary isn't wasting her

  862. time because she is

  863. investing in her relationship

  864. with the Lord and that

  865. relationship will never be

  866. taken from her Mary's

  867. focusing and learning from

  868. Jesus and the things that

  869. she is learning are the

  870. very truths that will carry

  871. her through the difficulties

  872. of life they are the

  873. truths that point her to

  874. Jesus as God in the flesh

  875. and the truths these truths

  876. are the words of eternal

  877. life nobody can take that

  878. away from her and friends as

  879. you sit under the teaching

  880. of Jesus no one can take

  881. that from you either when we

  882. sit under the truths of the

  883. word of God as we sit at the

  884. feet of Jesus they are the

  885. truths that change our hearts

  886. they are the truths that fuel a

  887. life of devotion and service of

  888. God because if we know who he

  889. is then we will want to serve him

  890. then we will want to be the best

  891. disciples we can be for his

  892. glory a good indication of

  893. someone sitting at the feet of

  894. Jesus is someone who's being

  895. transformed by those words by the

  896. teaching and someone whose life is

  897. being changed you can never really

  898. know the scriptures until you're

  899. willing to be changed by them

  900. everyone seems to have a theory of

  901. what the problems are with the

  902. global church every Christian has had

  903. conversations about what the church

  904. needs to be a better place and every

  905. Christian has pondered how we can

  906. reach more people how we can be

  907. better equipped to live life in a

  908. fallen broken world but friends the

  909. answer is not in the newest strategy

  910. from the celebrity pastors it's not in

  911. the new ministries by the biggest

  912. churches around the answer is not

  913. found in programs or busyness the

  914. the answer is that we need to sit at

  915. the feet of Jesus and learn

  916. service is good but disconnected from

  917. fellowship it's useless we don't

  918. invite people over or go to people's

  919. houses to sit at their kitchen tables

  920. for them to be running around

  921. constantly making foods do we no we go

  922. there and we invite people so that we

  923. can have fellowship enjoy company build

  924. on relationships and it's the same

  925. with service

  926. without sitting at the feet of Jesus

  927. service is meaningless we can do all

  928. if we want but unless we have a

  929. meaningful relationship with the Lord

  930. and we're devoted to him then we're

  931. just ticking off our own checklist of

  932. to-dos service is important but it

  933. must come from a healthy relationship

  934. with the Lord and it must be born out

  935. of time sitting at his feet and

  936. learning friends as we draw to a close

  937. the thing that these two sisters teach

  938. us about the priorities of a disciple

  939. are that we should serve out of a

  940. devotion to the Lord but not let the

  941. busyness of life distract us from him

  942. and we need to sit under the teaching

  943. of Jesus and hear his word

  944. let me tell you that there is no better

  945. way to spend your time than in the

  946. presence and word of our wonderful

  947. savior Jesus Christ let's pray

  948. together

  949. father as we think of this new year

  950. coming our way

  951. we pray that you would be our

  952. priority

  953. we pray that we would be humble

  954. and Lord that we would submit to your

  955. word

  956. that we would set aside time to invest

  957. in our relationship with you to grow in

  958. our understanding of who you are of who

  959. we are in you because of the wonderful

  960. gospel of Jesus Christ

  961. father help us look to you help us

  962. focus on you and help us be good and

  963. better worshipers of you for your

  964. glory and for the upbuilding of your

  965. kingdom in Jesus name amen

  966. love you

  967. let's gather and

  968. help us

  969. guys

  970. we

  971. love you

  972. we

  973. love you

  974. you

  975. grace

  976. you

  977. the

  978. amazing
