  1. Well, folks, great to see you this morning.

  2. Why don't we just join our hearts together and let's pray as we come to this passage.

  3. Paul would write in Romans 12, the call to these Christians who live in Rome,

  4. the call to be transformed by the renewing of their minds.

  5. And Holy Spirit, we ask that you would come and help us as we seek to do that this morning.

  6. What we see not, we ask that you would show us.

  7. Lord, where we understand not, we ask that you would help us.

  8. And what we are not, we ask that you would make us.

  9. All for the glory of our three-in-one brilliant God.

  10. In his name we pray. Amen.

  11. Well, let me just invite you to have that passage in Genesis 1 in front of you.

  12. It's so important that we have God's words in front of us so that you have nothing else.

  13. You can see that what I'm saying, hopefully, and this will be my prayer all week, is what this passage is saying.

  14. As you're turning to Genesis 1, let me tell you about a pantomime I was watching with my two little girls,

  15. not this Christmas, last Christmas.

  16. The pantomime was on CBeebies and the pantomime was called Thumbelina.

  17. So everyone needs to hold out their thumbs.

  18. This is Thumbelina.

  19. Thumbelina, the thumb-sized girl.

  20. And this whole pantomime was the story of Thumbelina traveling around her little world, bumping into different characters.

  21. And she would ask different characters questions about life and about them and about her

  22. because she wanted to understand where she had come from.

  23. Because she lived her life in her little world.

  24. As she flew around, she realized that there was nobody quite like her.

  25. So she's asking questions like, how did I get here?

  26. Right?

  27. Where did I come from?

  28. Who is like me?

  29. How did I get like this?

  30. Where am I going?

  31. What should I be doing?

  32. Because she figures that if she can get the answers to those kind of questions,

  33. then she'll be able to derive from those things some kind of purpose for her life

  34. as she continues to exist.

  35. And I'm watching this thinking, I don't know if you're an avid CBeebies watcher.

  36. Okay, this is my stage of life.

  37. Watching this thinking, who knew that CBeebies could be so postmodern?

  38. Because the questions that Thumbelina was asking are kind of the questions that we ask about life,

  39. don't we, at times?

  40. We ask ourselves those kind of questions.

  41. Who are we?

  42. How did we get here?

  43. What are we doing?

  44. Except here's the thing for us.

  45. We realize that life isn't a CBeebies show.

  46. We realize that we don't live in Disneyland.

  47. So we kind of step out the CBeebies bubble,

  48. and we watch the real world being presented to us

  49. as we see it and as we see it on, say, the 6 o'clock news.

  50. And we hear about how human beings around the world

  51. are doing some of the most wonderful and sacrificial things.

  52. And yet, in the same broadcast,

  53. we hear about human beings who are committing

  54. some of the most horrific atrocities imaginable.

  55. Right?

  56. Or we're watching David Attenborough.

  57. We're watching him document some of nature's most incredible things.

  58. As our world ticks, as it does its thing.

  59. We're blown away.

  60. And yet, at the same time, we turn on the news.

  61. And when that program begins to tell us about the world,

  62. we hear about the natural disasters which are going on.

  63. And we hear about the forest fires in Australia.

  64. And we wonder, what is going on?

  65. What's this all about?

  66. Now, let me ask you, as you sit here today

  67. and as you think about all of that,

  68. how do you process that?

  69. Right?

  70. How do you understand that in your mind?

  71. As you interact with the world in which we live,

  72. however you make sense of that,

  73. is what is known as your worldview.

  74. Right?

  75. How you understand the world.

  76. Your answer to those questions.

  77. How did I get here?

  78. Where am I going?

  79. Why did these things happen?

  80. What is it ultimately about?

  81. That is your worldview.

  82. Right?

  83. How you understand the world.

  84. And it affects how you live your life in the world

  85. because you understand this is why I'm here.

  86. This is where I've come from.

  87. This is why I exist.

  88. And you live your life matching up

  89. with what you believe that to be.

  90. And there are tons of worldviews out there.

  91. Right?

  92. People often come to you.

  93. They say this to me.

  94. I wish I had your faith.

  95. Right?

  96. I wish I had your faith.

  97. To which my question is,

  98. you've got faith.

  99. If we're defining faith as trust based on evidence,

  100. what you believe to be true,

  101. every single human being has faith,

  102. trusting in something.

  103. Your question is,

  104. you have faith in something different

  105. to what I have faith in.

  106. Right?

  107. We're all basing our lives on something.

  108. Tons of worldviews exist around the table.

  109. And the thing is,

  110. what we're going to look at over the next few weeks

  111. is that into this worldview arena,

  112. God speaks in the book of Genesis.

  113. You see, we're not the first question

  114. asking these kind of questions.

  115. You've got to do justice to this text

  116. that the first readers of Genesis

  117. are most likely the generation of God's people

  118. who find themselves having come out of Egypt,

  119. heading for the promised land,

  120. journeying in the desert.

  121. What they realize is that they realize

  122. they're living in a big world.

  123. Right?

  124. They look up.

  125. They're intelligent human beings.

  126. They look up.

  127. They can see.

  128. And they can realize that it's not all about them.

  129. And they're surrounded by people

  130. from different nations

  131. who are living lives completely differently

  132. to how they are living

  133. and who are worshiping and living for different things.

  134. And the purpose of this book of Genesis

  135. that Moses wrote

  136. is to help his generation

  137. grasp a God-shaped worldview.

  138. Grasp a God-shaped worldview.

  139. Because here's how this works out for me.

  140. Right?

  141. I think in my life that I am the sun.

  142. And everything revolves around me.

  143. Right?

  144. I am the center of my universe.

  145. That's what I think.

  146. And yet here is a book

  147. that just smashes into that.

  148. And says,

  149. you are not the sun.

  150. You are not the sun.

  151. And it causes us

  152. to lift our eyes off of ourselves

  153. and throw them into the air

  154. and say,

  155. actually,

  156. this world is about the God who made it.

  157. And if we can understand

  158. the God who made this world,

  159. then we've got a chance of understanding

  160. who we are.

  161. And so this book is written

  162. to help a generation of God's people

  163. understand the world in which they live.

  164. This book means beginnings.

  165. This is what the title means.

  166. Answering the questions,

  167. who am I?

  168. Why am I here?

  169. What am I doing?

  170. I love this quote.

  171. C.S. Lewis, right, said this.

  172. I believe in Christianity

  173. as I believe that the sun has risen,

  174. not only because I see it,

  175. but because by it,

  176. I see everything else.

  177. So as we come to this book,

  178. we need to appreciate

  179. that those are the questions

  180. that it is trying to answer.

  181. But primarily the how question,

  182. right,

  183. how long were the days of creation?

  184. It's not trying to answer that.

  185. Or the when question,

  186. how old is the earth?

  187. What about the dinosaurs?

  188. Let me just say,

  189. if there are the questions in your mind

  190. that are only natural questions

  191. to ask as we come to this text,

  192. and you can come to me afterwards

  193. or chat amongst yourselves.

  194. We can recommend people

  195. who are way smarter than me

  196. who've studied this stuff.

  197. They can help you understand,

  198. wrestle with those questions.

  199. But Genesis is interested

  200. in addressing the who

  201. and the why questions.

  202. Right, you ready for this?

  203. Will we dive into this text?

  204. Yeah, for this,

  205. come with me to verse one.

  206. And let's allow Genesis

  207. to tell us firstly

  208. about the God who is there.

  209. The God who is there.

  210. The God who makes himself known.

  211. And come with me

  212. to the very first words of the Bible

  213. and to the words that

  214. maybe you know William Anders

  215. read out to the world

  216. from Apollo 8

  217. as they orbited the moon

  218. on Christmas Eve 1968,

  219. which I believe,

  220. I think I'm right,

  221. I'm ad-libbing here,

  222. was the most watched television program

  223. up to that point.

  224. In the beginning,

  225. God created.

  226. The heavens and the earth.

  227. Who is this God?

  228. I'm just honing in two things

  229. that this passage would tell us

  230. for the sake of time.

  231. Who is this God?

  232. Firstly, he is eternal.

  233. Right, meaning that God

  234. has always been.

  235. There was never a time

  236. when he wasn't.

  237. In fact, he has always existed

  238. as a loving community

  239. of Father, Son and Spirit.

  240. One God, three persons

  241. who have,

  242. since before time began,

  243. been doing nothing other

  244. than mutually delighting

  245. in one another.

  246. And that's why we can say

  247. for sure that this God is love.

  248. Because that's what he's been doing

  249. and will be doing

  250. for all eternity.

  251. That's who this God is.

  252. Is your mind blown yet?

  253. Right?

  254. Word for of the Bible,

  255. we're at.

  256. There's a lot of words

  257. to go after this.

  258. This is who this God is.

  259. Meaning that what he did next

  260. wasn't because there was

  261. anything lacking in him.

  262. He did out of the overflow

  263. of his greatness.

  264. What did he do?

  265. Come with me.

  266. This is the second thing

  267. that we see that he created.

  268. He is powerful.

  269. This God is powerful.

  270. Verse two,

  271. the earth was without form

  272. and void.

  273. And you see how this God speaks

  274. and things come into being

  275. through the power

  276. of his words.

  277. Now we always say that

  278. in our day,

  279. don't we?

  280. That you can tell

  281. who's in charge

  282. as you walk into a situation

  283. by watching what happens

  284. when people speak.

  285. Yeah?

  286. You know that's been true

  287. in some of your workplaces.

  288. Yeah?

  289. The boss speaks,

  290. things get done.

  291. Somebody down here speaks,

  292. things don't happen.

  293. Yeah?

  294. Give you a little example

  295. of this.

  296. Over Christmas,

  297. we went back to my parents.

  298. My parents have a little

  299. parson terrier dog

  300. called Charlie.

  301. Right?

  302. I said I had to go at this.

  303. I went,

  304. Charlie, sit.

  305. Right?

  306. And the dog looks at me

  307. as if to say,

  308. yeah,

  309. not a chance, son.

  310. But dad walks in the room.

  311. He says,

  312. Charlie, sit.

  313. Quick as a flash,

  314. down Charlie goes.

  315. This God has authority.

  316. You see,

  317. this God speaks

  318. and things happen.

  319. He effortlessly

  320. commands

  321. and creates.

  322. Days one,

  323. two,

  324. and three,

  325. if you like,

  326. he forms the world.

  327. Right?

  328. If you've got it there,

  329. day and night,

  330. light, land,

  331. and waters,

  332. land,

  333. and plants,

  334. he forms it.

  335. Or if you like,

  336. he creates his stage.

  337. And in days four,

  338. five,

  339. and six,

  340. he fills that stage

  341. with actors.

  342. Do you see how we get

  343. the sun,

  344. the moon,

  345. and the stars,

  346. the birds,

  347. and the fish,

  348. land,

  349. animals,

  350. and humans.

  351. And God,

  352. what does he think of this?

  353. I love this.

  354. What does he think?

  355. After each day is complete,

  356. do you see the repeated refrain?

  357. Verse four,

  358. and God saw that it was what?

  359. Good.

  360. Right?

  361. Track with me in the verses.

  362. Verse 10,

  363. and God saw that it was good.

  364. Verse 12,

  365. verse 18,

  366. verse 21,

  367. verse 25,

  368. and God saw that it was good.

  369. Right?

  370. In other words,

  371. God is not like us.

  372. He's having a shot at DIY.

  373. Like,

  374. he creates something.

  375. He looks at it.

  376. He thinks,

  377. it wasn't quite what I intended,

  378. but it will do.

  379. Right?

  380. I've got a mirror in our bedroom at home,

  381. just above.

  382. I've got a fireplace in the room,

  383. just above the fire.

  384. And my father-in-law,

  385. when we put it up,

  386. we measured it.

  387. We looked at each other.

  388. We verified that these measurements were correct.

  389. We drilled holes in each side.

  390. We looked at each other.

  391. Is it still correct?

  392. Yes,

  393. it is.

  394. And it's a centimeter out.

  395. And it looks at me every night,

  396. as if to say,

  397. you were so close.

  398. Do you see how this God,

  399. creation happens,

  400. it exists,

  401. it fits,

  402. it works,

  403. and it does exactly

  404. as he intended it to do.

  405. That's what the word good means.

  406. It's good,

  407. but it gets even better.

  408. Do you see how that phrase

  409. comes a seventh time,

  410. except it's got extra levels

  411. of goodness to it.

  412. What does God declare

  413. about his creation?

  414. Verse 31.

  415. What is it now?

  416. It is very good.

  417. Why?

  418. Why?

  419. Well,

  420. let's allow Genesis to tell us

  421. about the humans who are here.

  422. Okay,

  423. look at verse 26.

  424. This is incredible stuff.

  425. Then God said,

  426. let us make mankind in our image,

  427. in our likeness,

  428. so that they may rule

  429. over the fish in the sea

  430. and the birds in the sky,

  431. over the livestock

  432. and all the wild animals,

  433. and over all the creatures

  434. that move along the ground.

  435. So Genesis tells us

  436. that human beings are made

  437. God's blueprint,

  438. male and female,

  439. in the image of this

  440. three-in-one loving community

  441. that is God.

  442. And he declares it's very good

  443. over no other created thing

  444. does God say that.

  445. we bear as human beings,

  446. we bear his image,

  447. meaning that in some way

  448. we reflect,

  449. we resemble him,

  450. which explains,

  451. if you want to tease that out,

  452. that explains

  453. our inbuilt desire

  454. for community.

  455. Does it know that we're made

  456. in the image of the God

  457. who is a three-in-one

  458. loving community?

  459. It explains our desire

  460. for other human beings

  461. to have that relationship

  462. with them.

  463. Explains our longing

  464. for love,

  465. we're made in the image

  466. of this God.

  467. I'll just follow

  468. the ripples

  469. of application here.

  470. Let me just

  471. kind of tease this out

  472. a little bit.

  473. What does this say

  474. about human beings?

  475. Firstly,

  476. it pronounces

  477. the dignity over them.

  478. Right?

  479. One,

  480. and this is so important

  481. that we see this,

  482. one that is inherent

  483. to every single human life

  484. without exception,

  485. simply because they exist.

  486. Right?

  487. It's why we can pray,

  488. isn't it,

  489. for,

  490. we're praying for that

  491. newborn baby earlier,

  492. but those days,

  493. every single day

  494. of that child's life

  495. known by the God

  496. who created her

  497. in his image.

  498. Every human being

  499. valued,

  500. known,

  501. precious,

  502. and of worth.

  503. Is this not

  504. a beautiful description

  505. and understanding

  506. of human beings?

  507. It's why the American

  508. Declaration of Independence

  509. starts with these words,

  510. we hold these truths

  511. to be self-evident,

  512. that all men

  513. are created equal,

  514. right,

  515. all people are created equal,

  516. that they are endowed

  517. by their creator

  518. with certain

  519. unalienable rights.

  520. And it's why

  521. people like

  522. William Wilberforce

  523. in the past

  524. took the stand

  525. they did against

  526. racism and slavery

  527. because they had

  528. this understanding

  529. of what it means

  530. to be a human being.

  531. It's why we should care,

  532. if you just follow this again,

  533. it's why we should care

  534. about child poverty.

  535. It's why we should care

  536. about domestic abuse.

  537. It's why we should care

  538. about discrimination.

  539. And it's why as Christians,

  540. with this understanding

  541. of human beings,

  542. it should cause us

  543. to speak for those

  544. who cannot speak

  545. for themselves.

  546. Right?

  547. It's why we care

  548. about beginning

  549. of life issues.

  550. And it's why we care

  551. about end of life issues.

  552. because all life

  553. matters to God.

  554. You see,

  555. I live in here,

  556. it's a desk

  557. that said,

  558. I think,

  559. therefore I am.

  560. And this understanding

  561. of what it means

  562. to be a human being

  563. says that cannot be true.

  564. Because the definition

  565. of what it means

  566. to be a person

  567. cannot be that you think.

  568. Right?

  569. I'm trained as a lawyer,

  570. I'm trained to ask questions

  571. because my question is,

  572. what does it mean?

  573. What do you mean by think?

  574. How do you understand that?

  575. And what are you saying

  576. about those people

  577. who cannot think

  578. by your definition?

  579. Do you understand

  580. that the Christian worldview

  581. says?

  582. Not,

  583. I think,

  584. therefore I am.

  585. The Christian worldview

  586. says,

  587. I exist,

  588. therefore I am precious

  589. in God's sight.

  590. So we've come to see

  591. the love,

  592. the very goodness

  593. in God's design.

  594. Right?

  595. And you understand

  596. what Paul was saying

  597. in Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  598. Be transformed

  599. by the renewing

  600. of your mind.

  601. The way that you

  602. understand life.

  603. I recognize

  604. that we've waded in

  605. just even there

  606. to maybe painful waters

  607. for some of us.

  608. Friends,

  609. let me just encourage you

  610. to run to Jesus.

  611. The one who forgives

  612. all of our sins.

  613. The one who knows us.

  614. The one who,

  615. as we were singing about earlier,

  616. we can run to

  617. and cast our cares

  618. and our burdens

  619. upon our Savior.

  620. And run to him

  621. who knows

  622. and who forgives.

  623. This pronounces

  624. over humanity

  625. a dignity.

  626. And it pronounces

  627. over humanity

  628. a responsibility.

  629. Right?

  630. God created man.

  631. Do you see it?

  632. And gave

  633. them

  634. the job

  635. of ruling

  636. as his vice regents

  637. over his

  638. creation.

  639. Right?

  640. He is king.

  641. We are subject.

  642. We are ruling

  643. over this.

  644. What a responsibility.

  645. And we're charged,

  646. you see,

  647. given the privilege

  648. of cultivating that

  649. for his glory.

  650. And it's why,

  651. again,

  652. just follow the ripples

  653. of application.

  654. It's why we should care

  655. about this planet.

  656. And we should be

  657. looking after it

  658. because it displays

  659. God's glory.

  660. And do you see

  661. how God looks

  662. on what he has made

  663. and he declares

  664. that it is

  665. very good.

  666. and we

  667. have come to love

  668. and to understand

  669. God's very goodness

  670. in his creation.

  671. And what we've got to see,

  672. God rules over this

  673. as king.

  674. And what we've also

  675. got to see is that

  676. this text has been

  677. so beautifully

  678. put together.

  679. Right?

  680. And let me just,

  681. this blew my mind

  682. this week, okay?

  683. Let's share this with you.

  684. I'm sharing it with you.

  685. Let's do it.

  686. Right?

  687. This has been so beautifully

  688. put together

  689. and done in such a way

  690. is to draw our attention

  691. to the number seven.

  692. Right?

  693. Stay with me.

  694. The number in the Bible

  695. that represents

  696. speaks of perfection.

  697. Okay?

  698. So,

  699. in Genesis 1,

  700. there are,

  701. the number seven

  702. or multiples of seven

  703. come up all the time.

  704. All the time.

  705. Just,

  706. just casting us

  707. to the seventh day.

  708. Right?

  709. So,

  710. the original Hebrew

  711. opening sentence,

  712. how many words

  713. do you think?

  714. Seven words.

  715. Right?

  716. The phrase,

  717. God saw that it was good

  718. seven times.

  719. Heavens comes

  720. 21 times,

  721. right?

  722. Seven times three.

  723. Elohim,

  724. God,

  725. comes 35 times.

  726. So,

  727. this passage

  728. is screaming at us

  729. seven,

  730. seven,

  731. seven,

  732. seven,

  733. seven.

  734. Perfect,

  735. perfect,

  736. perfect,

  737. perfect,

  738. perfect,

  739. which should tell us

  740. automatically

  741. that the mess

  742. that we see today

  743. must have come

  744. from somewhere else

  745. because it didn't exist

  746. when God created it.

  747. But now,

  748. see that this chapter

  749. has been put together

  750. in such a way

  751. that the reader

  752. is drawn to look

  753. at the mountaintop

  754. moment of day seven.

  755. Okay,

  756. and we get it.

  757. Come with me.

  758. Verse two of chapter two.

  759. By the seventh day,

  760. God had finished

  761. the work that he had

  762. been doing.

  763. So,

  764. on the seventh day,

  765. he rested

  766. from all his work.

  767. So,

  768. what happens?

  769. On the seventh day,

  770. God finishes.

  771. What do we learn

  772. about this God?

  773. This God is a

  774. finisher.

  775. Okay,

  776. he finishes things.

  777. How often do we

  778. start out with

  779. good intentions

  780. about doing jobs

  781. and we never

  782. see it through,

  783. right?

  784. I love this.

  785. What is it in

  786. Carleton Hill

  787. that we see?

  788. We look at it

  789. every day.

  790. We see the monument.

  791. What is it known as?

  792. It's known as

  793. Edinburgh Shame

  794. because somebody

  795. started it

  796. and he didn't

  797. finish it.

  798. This God

  799. finishes things.

  800. This God speaks

  801. and he finishes.

  802. This God always

  803. gets done

  804. what he says

  805. he will get done.

  806. So important

  807. for people

  808. in the desert

  809. wondering,

  810. can our God

  811. do what he said

  812. he would do

  813. and get us

  814. to the promised land?

  815. This God finishes.

  816. And what else

  817. did God do?

  818. He rested.

  819. Which doesn't mean

  820. that he was

  821. goosed,

  822. right?

  823. That he was

  824. out of resources,

  825. that he was spent,

  826. that he ran out of puff,

  827. that he had nothing

  828. left in the tank.

  829. Love how creative

  830. we get when we're

  831. trying to express

  832. to people

  833. that we're done.

  834. But God's not like us.

  835. He is

  836. omnipotent,

  837. right?

  838. Omni-potent.

  839. Omni-all-potent-powerful.

  840. This God is

  841. all-powerful.

  842. So what does that mean?

  843. It means that God,

  844. like a master artist,

  845. finished his masterpiece

  846. and he stood back

  847. and he looked at it

  848. and he loved it.

  849. He loved it

  850. and he basks

  851. in his goodness

  852. as creator.

  853. And what a picture

  854. we have here

  855. of the world

  856. that God made

  857. as creator

  858. and creation

  859. exist

  860. in glorious

  861. and perfect harmony.

  862. And where there exists

  863. nothing that would ever

  864. impede

  865. that rest

  866. because it's very good.

  867. It's 77777.

  868. It's perfect.

  869. And yet you're probably

  870. thinking to yourself,

  871. I'd imagine

  872. what the people

  873. first reading this

  874. were thinking to themselves

  875. that this isn't the world

  876. that we live in.

  877. And you're right

  878. and we'll see this

  879. in the weeks to come

  880. as we try and explore

  881. these opening chapters

  882. of Genesis

  883. and understand

  884. what it's telling us

  885. about the world.

  886. The story goes on.

  887. Adam and Eve

  888. as God creatures,

  889. they rebel

  890. against the very goodness

  891. of their creator.

  892. The creatures

  893. rebel against the creator.

  894. They reject his kingly rule.

  895. And every single human being

  896. ever since

  897. has followed suit

  898. in that rebellion

  899. and rejection.

  900. We don't want

  901. our creator.

  902. We don't want anything

  903. to do with him.

  904. And that's the very essence

  905. of sin.

  906. And what that means,

  907. and you can follow

  908. the logic of that

  909. is that we have

  910. incurred our creator's

  911. anger of our sin

  912. and we have forfeited

  913. our right to enter

  914. God's rest.

  915. And that should have

  916. been the end

  917. of the story.

  918. If it were not

  919. for the fact

  920. that God is

  921. this kind of God,

  922. that he is gracious

  923. and he is good

  924. and he's determined

  925. to make a way

  926. for his people

  927. to enter

  928. and enjoy

  929. and know

  930. that rest.

  931. And in the fullness

  932. of time,

  933. God would send forth

  934. his son

  935. into this world

  936. to do what?

  937. To save,

  938. to seek

  939. and to save

  940. and to make a way

  941. for his people

  942. to enter

  943. that rest.

  944. Right?

  945. As Jesus dies

  946. on the cross

  947. bearing the judgment

  948. of this holy God,

  949. the one that creatures

  950. like you and I

  951. deserve

  952. on himself

  953. and winning

  954. them for himself

  955. so that we can be

  956. declared righteous

  957. in him.

  958. What did we say

  959. about this God?

  960. He promises

  961. and he does

  962. and he finishes

  963. things.

  964. And what was

  965. the last phrase

  966. of Jesus

  967. as he hung

  968. on the cross?

  969. Tetelestai.

  970. It is

  971. finished.

  972. This God

  973. is a finisher.

  974. And Jesus

  975. rises again.

  976. He defeats death

  977. meaning that death

  978. will not have

  979. the lost word

  980. over his people.

  981. He will.

  982. Do you see

  983. how he deals

  984. with my sin

  985. and he defeats

  986. death?

  987. The two enemies

  988. that had barred me

  989. and you

  990. from entering

  991. God's rest.

  992. And so we hear

  993. him declaring

  994. Matthew 11

  995. to a world

  996. full of broken

  997. burdens,

  998. struggling,

  999. confused and rebellious

  1000. human beings.

  1001. Come to me

  1002. all you who are

  1003. weary and burdened

1004. and I will give you

  1005. rest.

  1006. rest.

  1007. Jesus came

  1008. to make a way

  1009. for you and I

  1010. to know the rest

  1011. of our creator.

  1012. Right?

  1013. That shalom,

  1014. that rightness

  1015. with him.

  1016. Rest that we can

  1017. know now

  1018. and the rest

1019. that we will one day

  1020. gloriously know

  1021. in God's new

  1022. heavenly city.

1023. The one that we read

  1024. about in Revelation 21

  1025. where everything again

  1026. is perfect.

  1027. So Jesus says

  1028. come to me.

  1029. Maybe for some

  1030. of us today,

  1031. maybe for the first

  1032. time you need to

  1033. go to him.

  1034. You need to run

  1035. to him for the

  1036. forgiveness of your

  1037. sins.

  1038. You need to run

  1039. to him for

  1040. wholeness and

  1041. newness of life

  1042. and to run to

  1043. him who knows

  1044. and who came

  1045. to seek and to

  1046. save.

  1047. And just as we

  1048. finish,

  1049. let me take it

  1050. back to

  1051. Thumbelina,

  1052. watching this

  1053. program.

  1054. She's on this

  1055. journey of

  1056. self-discovery

  1057. and she's

  1058. meeting different

  1059. characters.

  1060. One of the

  1061. characters she

  1062. bumps into is

  1063. called Mrs.

  1064. Blue Swallow.

  1065. And Mrs.

  1066. Blue Swallow

  1067. didn't just speak

  1068. to Thumbelina,

  1069. this was a

  1070. pantomime,

  1071. she sang to

  1072. Thumbelina.

  1073. So I had to

  1074. go on iPlayer

  1075. and scroll the

  1076. thing and rewind

  1077. and write down

  1078. the words of

  1079. what she said

  1080. so I could

  1081. bring them to

  1082. you.

  1083. So I

  1084. appreciate this.

  1085. This is what

  1086. she said.

  1087. She said,

  1088. go where you

  1089. will,

  1090. free as a

  1091. bird,

  1092. just follow

  1093. your heart

  1094. to find your

  1095. way in the

  1096. world.

  1097. Just close

  1098. your eyes

  1099. and dream

  1100. of places

  1101. perhaps your

  1102. home is on

  1103. the way.

  1104. Right?

  1105. Two thoughts

  1106. as I heard

  1107. that.

  1108. Firstly,

  1109. what a

  1110. lovely song.

  1111. Okay,

  1112. and as the

  1113. camera panned

  1114. around you

  1115. could see that

  1116. there was not

  1117. a dry eye

  1118. in the house.

  1119. Second thought,

  1120. what terrible

  1121. advice.

  1122. the call of

  1123. God in

  1124. Genesis

  1125. to a world

  1126. trying to

  1127. understand

  1128. itself,

  1129. full of

  1130. people trying

  1131. to understand

  1132. themselves,

  1133. is not to

  1134. look in,

  1135. not to look

  1136. in,

  1137. but to fall

  1138. on your knees

  1139. and look up

  1140. to the God

  1141. who loves us

  1142. and to the

  1143. God who made

  1144. us and to

  1145. the God who

  1146. sent his

  1147. son to save

  1148. us.

  1149. Friends,

  1150. run to

  1151. Jesus.

  1152. Run to

  1153. him.

  1154. Maybe just

  1155. in the silence

  1156. now as we

  1157. close,

  1158. let me just

  1159. invite you to

  1160. offer your

  1161. prayers to

  1162. this God

  1163. who hears

  1164. and knows.

  1165. And then I'll

  1166. close in prayer

  1167. and we'll stand

  1168. to sing our

  1169. final song.

  1170. But friends,

  1171. don't rush

  1172. this moment.

  1173. I trust that

  1174. God's word has

  1175. gone forth.

  1176. God's spirit

  1177. has been putting

  1178. his finger on

  1179. people's lives

  1180. and hearts.

  1181. And I encourage

  1182. you just to go

  1183. with that.

  1184. So let's just

  1185. have a few

  1186. moments of

  1187. silence and

  1188. then I'll

  1189. pray.

  1190. The

  1191. psalmist

  1192. would write,

  1193. as I consider

  1194. the works of

  1195. your hands,

  1196. the things

  1197. that you have

  1198. made,

  1199. who am I

  1200. that you are

  1201. mindful of

  1202. me?

  1203. And so

  1204. gracious and

  1205. loving heavenly

  1206. Father, we

  1207. ask Lord that

  1208. as we

  1209. finish this

  1210. morning,

  1211. that you

  1212. would help

  1213. us

  1214. by your

  1215. spirit to

  1216. be transformed

  1217. by the

  1218. renewing of

  1219. our minds.

  1220. That as we

  1221. look at this

  1222. book together

  1223. over the next

  1224. weeks, that

  1225. you would help

  1226. us to love

  1227. you more and

  1228. to delight in

  1229. you more.

  1230. As we see

  1231. ourselves, as we

  1232. see the beauty

  1233. and yet the

  1234. brokenness, and

  1235. as we see our

  1236. world that is

  1237. also beauty and

  1238. full of brokenness,

  1239. that you would

  1240. help us to run

  1241. to you.

  1242. Father, thank

  1243. you that you

  1244. love us.

  1245. We don't need to

  1246. doubt that, we

  1247. don't need to

  1248. question that, we

  1249. just need to

  1250. look at the

  1251. cross and

  1252. know that you

  1253. love us.

  1254. So Father, thank

  1255. you for today.

  1256. We just commit

  1257. it to you, Lord,

  1258. in Jesus'

  1259. precious name.

  1260. Amen.
