  1. Good evening. For those of you who do not know me, my name is Luca, and I'm one of the members here at Bransfield Evangelical Church.

  2. As you might know, we're beginning a new series of sermons on the book of 1 Peter tonight.

  3. 1 Peter is a letter, it's in the New Testament, and it's a really powerful letter which has so much encouragement for us, I think,

  4. as we strive to live out our Christian lives in a broken world.

  5. Today, as you know, we're going through the first 12 verses in the letter, and I think these first 12 verses in particular,

  6. they really overflow with positive language.

  7. I think perhaps Peter has carefully chosen his words to set the tone in these first verses of the whole book,

  8. because the passages that we will be looking at in the coming Sundays, they do have some very direct challenges for us.

  9. So I think this is probably why Peter opens the letter the way he does, as if he was saying,

  10. this is what I'm reminding you of in these first 12 verses.

  11. This is the reason why you should do what I'm going to tell you later.

  12. As I studied this passage, I was reminded of a painting by a French painter, Paul Gauguin.

  13. He lived in the 1800s.

  14. And it's one of the many paintings that this art teacher of mine made a study back in school in great detail.

  15. I'm really no art expert.

  16. And the reason why this painting came to mind as I read the passage and studied the passage is its title,

  17. which is quite a peculiar one.

  18. It's really long, and it's made up of three questions.

  19. So the title of the painting is, where do we come from?

  20. What are we?

  21. Where are we going?

  22. You might notice a running theme if you were here this morning with existential questions today,

  23. as Graham preached this morning.

  24. But I think, as Graham said, if we're honest, we've probably asked ourselves these questions.

  25. Maybe we still come back to them, perhaps from a different perspective every time I know I do, at least.

  26. And Gauguin's answers to these questions seem to be in this allegoric, quite enigmatic picture.

  27. No one really knows what all the different elements in the picture symbolize, so to speak.

  28. But the most common interpretation is that this is where we come from, the baby on the far right.

  29. And this is what we are, just people going about their lives in the middle, maybe picking fruits.

  30. And that's where we're going, the older lady crouching on the far left.

  31. So why the painting?

  32. Because I think in these verses that we're looking at today, I think they give us the answers to these three huge questions.

  33. But I'm convinced also that we will come to some wildly different conclusions than the painter.

  34. Because unlike the painting, there's really nothing enigmatic in these verses.

  35. In fact, I think the answers we're going to find are quite clear and transparent for us.

  36. Now, before we dive in, because this is our first Sunday in 1 Peter,

  37. I thought we would spend a couple of minutes just looking at the background of the book.

  38. So the apostle Peter writes the letter.

  39. He's one of the 12.

  40. And he's possibly the apostle that we often remember because he denied Jesus in a moment of weakness.

  41. But let's make sure that we don't let this event in his life define the whole of his life.

  42. In fact, I think if any of us today are skeptical about the difference that the gospel can make in a person's life,

  43. then Peter's biography is a really good place to go.

  44. We read in Matthew 26, as we said, how he hits rock bottom and he denies Jesus, who is about to be killed.

  45. But then just a few pages later in the Bible, in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  46. the same Peter is preaching to thousands of people in public, out loud,

  47. and 3,000 people that day after he preached or as he preached join the church.

  48. That's how powerful the gospel is.

  49. And that's the same gospel that Peter is telling us about in these verses.

  50. As he writes the letter, Peter is in Rome, and he is writing to Christians who belong to different churches,

  51. churches in Asia Minor, which is modern-day Turkey.

  52. And these people are being persecuted.

  53. Nero is the Roman emperor of the time, but his systematic persecution, which we might know of

  54. because it culminates in the great fire of Rome, that hasn't started yet.

  55. It's likely that 1 Peter would have been written just a couple of years before that, around 63 AD.

  56. But going by a few hints in the letter,

  57. it is likely that these Christians are victims of non-systematic persecution.

  58. Because they live in provinces of the Roman Empire, therefore a pagan world,

  59. and therefore they stick out.

  60. They do not conform to the society that they live in.

  61. This society that is becoming more and more hostile towards Christianity,

  62. this new philosophy that is getting more and more disciples.

  63. So people are skeptical, people don't trust Christians,

  64. and therefore Christians end up suffering at the hand of those in power.

  65. Now I wonder, does any of this sound familiar to us?

  66. People around us, skeptical of Christians and Christianity?

  67. People around us, hostile even?

  68. This feeling of sticking out because of our beliefs,

  69. maybe at work or among family or among friends?

  70. I'm sure it does probably for many of us.

  71. And so I think we can understand at least to a certain extent,

  72. probably what these Christians would have been going through.

  73. And that is great because this is a letter which will show us

  74. what it is like to live as Christians in a difficult world,

  75. just like we do.

  76. So I think it's safe to assume that these Christians that he is writing to,

  77. they are discouraged.

  78. They're probably wondering, what is the point of it all?

  79. Has God forgotten about them?

  80. Does God even care about us?

  81. Well, I think God clearly does because he works through Peter

  82. so that they can receive this incredible letter,

  83. which is a letter of encouragement

  84. and a letter which reminds them of their identity as children of God.

  85. But it's also a challenging letter,

  86. which will exhort them to behave as children of God.

  87. So thinking about us,

  88. I'm hoping that this is going to be for us a letter of encouragement,

  89. which will remind us of our identity as people of God

  90. and which will exhort us to behave as such.

  91. And also before we dive in,

  92. I just wanted to say if any of us today don't think they're children of God,

  93. if any of us today are unsure as to what that possibly even means,

  94. then I'm hoping that we will find the answer in this book together.

  95. So if we go back to the three questions,

  96. the first one we're going to begin with,

  97. and the first one we're going to look at is,

  98. where do we come from?

  99. And I think Peter gives us the answer to these questions

  100. in the opening and closing verses of the passage.

  101. So verses 1 and 2,

  102. and then verses 10, 11, and 12.

  103. Let's read verse 1 together again.

  104. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

  105. to God's elect,

  106. exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus,

  107. Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia.

  108. I'll read it again.

  109. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

  110. to God's elect.

  111. This is who Peter says he is writing to.

  112. It's very fast words that he uses,

  113. God's elect.

  114. Do you see what he is doing here?

  115. He's telling these Christians from the very start,

  116. God knows you personally.

  117. He always has.

  118. Imagine the power of a statement like that

  119. for someone who's feeling neglected by God.

  120. Let's think about those moments in our life,

  121. for instance,

  122. when we asked ourselves if our life mattered to God.

  123. With just one word,

  124. Peter takes us right back to where we really belong.

  125. We are God's elect.

  126. In verse 2, he says,

  127. chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father.

  128. So where do we come from is the question.

  129. Well, says Peter,

  130. we come from the family of God.

  131. God the Father,

  132. the Spirit,

  133. and Jesus Christ,

  134. see the Trinity,

  135. here in verses 1 and 2,

  136. they work together,

  137. and are still working together,

  138. so that these Christians may be saved,

  139. so that we can be saved.

  140. So if that doesn't make us the opposite of neglected,

  141. then I really don't know what does.

  142. The triune God of the universe has chosen us,

  143. and he has made us his family.

  144. Something that we will see as we go through the letter

  145. is that it is full of Old Testament language.

  146. As he writes to these Christians,

  147. Peter wants them to feel part of the family of God,

  148. despite the fact that they are Gentiles.

  149. They're non-Jewish people.

  150. So it needs to be clear to them

  151. that through Jesus,

  152. as he says in verse 2,

  153. having been sprinkled with Jesus' blood,

  154. they are now part of God's people.

  155. Christians are all part of God's family,

  156. whether they were born Jewish or not.

  157. And this probably sounds quite straightforward to us,

  158. but in the context of the first century,

  159. using words like this for Gentiles,

  160. it takes on a lot of significance.

  161. What they're hearing is,

  162. you are not nobodies.

  163. You are not less important than the Jewish people around you,

  164. because you are God's elect.

  165. And then we have all of these Old Testament references throughout the letter,

  166. but in these verses we're looking at tonight,

  167. and in particular 10, 11, and 12,

  168. then he,

  169. Peter addresses even more directly this link

  170. between the Old Testament,

  171. the people of Israel,

  172. and these Christians.

  173. Sorry, yeah,

  174. these Christians,

  175. these Gentiles,

  176. who lived after Christ.

  177. Because he's telling them that the prophets

  178. that God sent to the people of Israel

  179. hundreds and thousands of years earlier,

  180. these prophets who foretold the coming of Jesus,

  181. just like Isaiah,

  182. just like the passage we read,

  183. they were serving them.

  184. They were not serving themselves.

  185. They were talking about things

  186. that would have happened

  187. in their time.

  188. So you unimportant

  189. non-Jewish Christians in Asia

  190. who are going

  191. about your ordinary lives,

  192. who are being looked on

  193. by the people around you,

  194. God himself,

  195. he sent prophets

  196. who would speak of things

  197. which were going to happen

  198. in your time,

  199. events which even angels

  200. long to look into,

  201. he says in verse 12.

  202. The gospel

  203. is for you.

  204. There is one last little word

  205. in these verses

  206. which has a lot to say

  207. about where we're from

  208. and it's exiles

  209. in verse 1.

  210. These Christians feel like

  211. they do not belong

  212. where they live

  213. and there is a reason

  214. for this.

  215. There is a reason

  216. why they feel like outsiders

  217. and why they are being persecuted

  218. and the reason is

  219. because they actually

  220. really do not belong.

  221. The same way that we don't.

  222. Paul says in Philippians 3,

  223. our citizenship is in heaven.

  224. Jesus says in John 17,

  225. we are in the world

  226. but not of the world.

  227. We might have a British passport

  228. for many of you

  229. or an Italian one for me

  230. but these are just

  231. earthly temporary citizenships

  232. while we are on exile

  233. on this broken planet,

  234. while we wait to go

  235. back to our real home.

  236. So I think it's quite easy

  237. to see how everything

  238. that Peter has said so far

  239. to these Christians

  240. is actually so, so relevant

  241. to us too.

  242. When our faith is causing us

  243. to feel uncomfortable,

  244. it's causing us to feel

  245. out of place.

  246. Well, of course it does.

  247. We need to pause

  248. and remember where we come from.

  249. Yes, we're here.

  250. Yes, we have families

  251. and friends and work

  252. but we are children of God.

  253. We've been saved

  254. by the God of the universe.

  255. His own son died for us

  256. and his spirit

  257. is at work in us now.

  258. And as Peter points out

  259. at the end of the passage,

  260. we're so fortunate

  261. to live on this side of history,

  262. to be able to hold this book

  263. in our hands

  264. and to witness

  265. God's grace

  266. through Jesus' death

  267. for us.

  268. So when we are discouraged

  269. like the original readers

  270. of the letter,

  271. then let's look into this book

  272. and let's be thankful

  273. that God loves us so much

  274. that he sent Jesus

  275. to die for us.

  276. Let's look up

  277. to him

  278. and marvel

  279. at his love

  280. instead of focusing

  281. on our difficulties here.

  282. Thank you.

  283. Question number two

  284. is where are we going?

  285. And we're going to look

  286. at verses three to five

  287. from this.

  288. These three verses

  289. in the NIV

  290. are split into sentences

  291. but in the original

  292. they are one long sentence

  293. and as I read them

  294. I thought

  295. this really is

  296. the gospel

  297. in one long sentence.

  298. So I thought

  299. I imagined

  300. if any of us

  301. were chatting

  302. to some stranger

  303. at the bus stop

  304. and we end up

  305. talking about Christianity

  306. and then the question

  307. comes up

  308. they have no idea

  309. what Christianity is

  310. so they go like

  311. what is the gospel?

  312. And you think

  313. well this is my opportunity

  314. I can tell someone

  315. what the gospel is

  316. and then you turn around

  317. and you see their bus coming

  318. so they need to hop on

  319. on their bus

  320. maybe you have 20 to 30 seconds

  321. how do you answer

  322. a question like that?

  323. You read these three verses.

  324. Let's do it together

  325. but more slowly

  326. so let's break it up a bit

  327. if you follow in your Bibles

  328. starting in verse 3

  329. so God

  330. who is the father of Jesus

  331. in his great mercy

  332. and we'll come back to this

  333. he has given us

  334. new birth

  335. how has he done that?

  336. Through the resurrection

  337. of Jesus Christ

  338. and what is the result

  339. of this new birth?

  340. That we have access

  341. to our inheritance

  342. which is kept in heaven

  343. for us

  344. and what does

  345. this inheritance look like?

  346. This inheritance

  347. can never perish

  348. can never spoil

  349. can never fade

  350. and when are we going

  351. to get it?

  352. We're in verse 5 now

  353. in the last time

  354. at the coming of

  355. the salvation

  356. so when Jesus comes back

  357. there you go

  358. summary of the whole gospel

  359. So where are we going

  360. is the question

  361. this is where we're going

  362. it's the place

  363. where Jesus has already gone

  364. and where we are headed

  365. as children of God

  366. it's our inheritance

  367. we are family

  368. part of the family of God

  369. and that's what happens

  370. with family

  371. you get an inheritance

  372. it's such a

  373. it's a world

  374. with such a strong

  375. sense of belonging

  376. we are going

  377. to heaven

  378. I don't know

  379. if we say it to ourselves

  380. often enough

  381. I know

  382. I don't think about it

  383. as much as I should

  384. we are going

  385. to heaven

  386. heaven is being

  387. kept for us

  388. Jesus did say

  389. didn't he

  390. that he is preparing

  391. a place for us

  392. a place so so different

  393. from where we are now

  394. so so different

  395. that Peter uses

  396. these three amazing words

  397. to describe it

  398. in verse 4

  399. and I realized

  400. as I studied the passage

  401. particularly the first few times

  402. it was just so easy

  403. to read quickly over it

  404. and overlook

  405. these three attributes

  406. so I thought

  407. we should stop

  408. and look at all three

  409. of them tonight

  410. and try and

  411. savour them

  412. I thought of

  413. just small

  414. sort of illustrations

  415. for each of them

  416. heaven is

  417. imperishable

  418. what does that mean?

  419. it means that there's

  420. no expiry date

  421. on it

  422. it's there

  423. to stay

  424. it isn't going

  425. anywhere

  426. heaven is

  427. waiting for us

  428. always

  429. and forever

  430. so we're trying to think

  431. what is like that?

  432. is there anything

  433. in the world

  434. that we can all relate to

  435. that's always been there

  436. and will always be there

  437. and the best I could

  438. come up with

  439. maybe you will come up

  440. with something better

  441. but the best I could

  442. come up with

  443. was the sun

  444. I think no matter

  445. how far back

  446. in history you go

  447. we all take for granted

  448. that the sun

  449. was already there

  450. and if we think

  451. about the future

  452. probably

  453. we will always

  454. assume that the sun

  455. is there

  456. but even

  457. the sun

  458. we do know

  459. is burning away

  460. I think

  461. at the moment

  462. the estimate

  463. has got

  464. a few billion years

  465. to burn

  466. but heaven

  467. will survive

  468. even that

  469. it's really difficult

  470. to even comprehend

  471. and then still

  472. in verse 4

  473. our inheritance

  474. in heaven

  475. is undefiled

  476. there is nothing

  477. anyone can do

  478. to spoil it

  479. to damage it

  480. to ruin it

  481. there's so much

  482. focus at the moment

  483. on our planet

  484. on how

  485. we are destroying it

  486. how

  487. humankind

  488. is spoiling it

  489. and

  490. the damage

  491. that we can make

  492. is so visible

  493. isn't it

  494. well

  495. not in heaven

  496. because no one

  497. can do

  498. the same

  499. to our

  500. inheritance

  501. whatever expects us

  502. is going to be

  503. pristine when we get there

  504. and it will

  505. remain intact

  506. we won't have to worry

  507. about sustainability

  508. in heaven

  509. our inheritance

  510. it cannot spoil

  511. unlike the earth

  512. we're on just now

  513. heaven is exactly

  514. like God

  515. intended it

  516. and then the third

  517. attribute Peter uses

  518. is unfading

  519. heaven

  520. doesn't fade

  521. it will not

  522. lose

  523. radiance

  524. it won't be like

  525. going to a party

  526. everyone's really excited

  527. at the start

  528. you meet your friends

  529. there's a lot to catch up on

  530. maybe you meet new people

  531. where are you from

  532. what do you do

  533. but then by then

  534. the party sort of peaked

  535. and then people start

  536. to get bored

  537. they start leaving

  538. and then the party dies

  539. well not the party

  540. that God has prepared

  541. for us

  542. heaven will not fade

  543. what a complete picture

  544. that Peter has painted

  545. for us

  546. do we see

  547. do we realize

  548. the grandiosity

  549. of what awaits us

  550. this description of heaven

  551. should really lift our eyes

  552. from our everyday lives

  553. and have us marvel

  554. as the beauty

  555. of what awaits us

  556. it's a place

  557. that's been designed

  558. by God himself

  559. it's a place

  560. that is being kept

  561. by God himself

  562. it's a place

  563. that hasn't been spoiled

  564. by sin

  565. so Peter is telling

  566. these Christians

  567. you come from

  568. the family of God

  569. and because

  570. that's your identity

  571. then this

  572. is where you're going

  573. so do not let

  574. what is happening

  575. here and now

  576. discourage you

  577. distract you

  578. just drag you down

  579. and forget

  580. where you belong

  581. you are on exile here

  582. your citizenship

  583. is not

  584. on this earth

  585. but look up instead

  586. that's where you belong

  587. and that

  588. is where you're going

  589. again here

  590. I think there's

  591. one little word

  592. that we need to

  593. pay attention to

  594. and it's mercy

  595. in verse 3

  596. great mercy

  597. Peter says

  598. because the description

  599. of such an astonishing

  600. inheritance

  601. it can be overwhelming

  602. it can make us wonder

  603. what on earth

  604. can I possibly do

  605. to deserve it

  606. well the answer

  607. is nothing

  608. we can accept it

  609. in fact we have

  610. if we want to

  611. enter this inheritance

  612. at all

  613. but we can't

  614. possibly deserve

  615. what God has prepared

  616. for us

  617. we are not going

  618. where we're going

  619. because we've been

  620. ticking off a few boxes

  621. on a to-do list

  622. we are going

  623. because God

  624. infinitely loves us

  625. simple as that

  626. verse 3 reads

  627. he has given us

  628. new birth

  629. into a living hope

  630. how has he done it

  631. is it maybe

  632. through our actions

  633. no it's not

  634. it's through

  635. Christ's death

  636. and resurrection

  637. nothing

  638. we can do

  639. will ever change

  640. the extent

  641. of God's mercy

  642. the last question

  643. that we need

  644. to answer then

  645. if we put it

  646. in Goggins words

  647. is

  648. what are we

  649. we're going to look

  650. at verses 6 to 9

  651. here

  652. so we've seen

  653. where we come from

  654. as children of God

  655. we've seen

  656. what inheritance

  657. expects us

  658. where we are going

  659. but

  660. what about

  661. the here and now

  662. what happens

  663. in the meantime

  664. what about

  665. all of those moments

  666. when we wonder

  667. why am I having

  668. to suffer

  669. for my

  670. suffer

  671. for my faith

  672. does the Bible

  673. have any answer

  674. any answers

  675. for us

  676. in this passage

  677. let's

  678. look at verse 6

  679. together

  680. though now

  681. for a little while

  682. you may have had

  683. to suffer grief

  684. in all

  685. kind of trials

  686. Peter tells us

  687. that we

  688. suffer grief

  689. and maybe

  690. we're thinking

  691. thank you Peter

  692. I noticed

  693. and

  694. why would we

  695. be

  696. suffering grief

  697. why would

  698. we be

  699. enduring trials

  700. if not

  701. because we're

  702. broken people

  703. because there's

  704. something

  705. inherently

  706. broken

  707. with us

  708. and I think

  709. we all

  710. simply

  711. know that

  712. we're broken

  713. don't we

  714. I mean

  715. we have to

  716. live with

  717. ourselves

  718. every moment

  719. of our lives

  720. and I'm

  721. pretty

  722. confident

  723. we can

  724. probably

  725. think of

  726. even a few

  727. examples

  728. from just

  729. the past

  730. couple of

  731. hours

  732. which

  733. point

  734. to

  735. our

  736. brokenness

  737. and this

  738. is quite

  739. simply

  740. what we

  741. are

  742. we are

  743. broken

  744. people

  745. and we

  746. live

  747. in a

  748. broken

  749. world

  750. and as

  751. Christians

  752. these

  753. subjects

  754. us

  755. to

  756. all

  757. kinds

  758. of

  759. trials

  760. don't

  761. we

  762. know it

  763. all too

  764. well

  765. in a

  766. world

  767. which

  768. was

  769. so hostile

  770. to

  771. Christianity

  772. in Peter's

  773. times

  774. and still

  775. is in

  776. our

  777. times

  778. we can

  779. think of

  780. outright

  781. persecution

  782. in countries

  783. like China

  784. for instance

  785. but also

  786. closer to

  787. home

  788. there's

  789. less violent

  790. or direct

  791. forms of

  792. persecution

  793. in our

  794. western

  795. countries

  796. in the

  797. form of

  798. stigma

  799. against

  800. Christianity

  801. maybe

  802. or the

  803. controversial

  804. topic of

  805. freedom of

  806. speech

  807. when it

  808. comes to

  809. certain

  810. issues

  811. I

  812. know of

  813. some of

  814. you who

  815. regularly

  816. face these

  817. problems

  818. in the

  819. workplace

  820. but there

  821. are two

  822. things

  823. that Peter

  824. points out

  825. for us

  826. about these

  827. trials

  828. there's

  829. good news

  830. for us

  831. the number

  832. one is

  833. for a little

  834. while

  835. in verse

  836. six

  837. our trials

  838. on this

  839. earth

  840. are

  841. temporary

  842. they're

  843. only for

  844. a time

  845. and we

  846. must not

  847. make the

  848. mistake

  849. of thinking

  850. that Peter

  851. is trivializing

  852. what Christians

  853. go through

  854. of all people

  855. he would be

  856. the last

  857. person to

  858. do that

  859. what Peter

  860. does with

  861. these verses

  862. instead is

  863. he is

  864. helping us

  865. lift our

  866. eyes

  867. let's think

  868. back to

  869. one of

  870. those

  871. three

  872. attributes

  873. of our

  874. inheritance

  875. in heaven

  876. we said

  877. imperishable

  878. now compare

  879. that

  880. this heaven

  881. that will

  882. survive

  883. the sun

  884. to

  885. what we

  886. go through

  887. on earth

  888. don't

  889. our human

  890. mortal

  891. lives

  892. pale in

  893. comparison

  894. and so

  895. should

  896. our

  897. trials

  898. if we

  899. look at

  900. things

  901. from the

  902. perspective

  903. of

  904. eternity

  905. eternity

  906. with God

  907. and then

  908. the second

  909. piece

  910. of good

  911. news

  912. is that

  913. these

  914. trials

  915. are

  916. necessary

  917. he says

  918. in verse

  919. six

  920. you may

  921. have had

  922. to suffer

  923. and then

  924. in verse

  925. seven

  926. he says

  927. these

  928. the trials

  929. have come

  930. so that

  931. and then

  932. he gives

  933. us an

  934. explanation

  935. which we're

  936. going to

  937. look at

  938. in a

  939. minute

  940. but just

  941. to say

  942. these

  943. words

  944. the way

  945. he

  946. words

  947. things

  948. that means

  949. that they

  950. are

  951. necessary

  952. what

  953. these

  954. Christians

  955. are

  956. enduring

  957. what we

  958. have to

  959. endure

  960. is no

  961. accident

  962. yes you

  963. have

  964. trials

  965. yes it

  966. is horrible

  967. yes it

  968. is frustrating

  969. yes it

  970. is difficult

  971. but they're

  972. not let's

  973. not make

  974. the mistake

  975. of thinking

  976. that these

  977. trials are

  978. the inevitable

  979. consequence

  980. of this

  981. world that's

  982. been forgotten

  983. by this

  984. God who's

  985. looking the

  986. other way

  987. God is

  988. in control

  989. they are

  990. part of

  991. God's

  992. plan and

  993. as such

  994. they are

  995. necessary

  996. because and

  997. he gives

  998. us the

  999. reason these

  1000. trials serve

  1001. a purpose

  1002. just like

  1003. Jesus'

  1004. death on

  1005. the cross

  1006. did he

  1007. didn't die

  1008. in vain

  1009. did he

  1010. so where

  1011. is this

  1012. purpose

  1013. verse 7

  1014. to test

  1015. our faith

  1016. to prove

  1017. the genuineness

  1018. of our

  1019. faith and

  1020. by doing

  1021. so ultimately

  1022. to strengthen

  1023. it these

  1024. trials strengthen

  1025. our faith in

  1026. a way that

  1027. results in

  1028. praise glory

  1029. and honor when

  1030. Jesus will be

  1031. revealed that's

  1032. in verse 7

  1033. and then to

  1034. top it all

  1035. off it's not

  1036. in today's

  1037. passage but

  1038. Peter will

  1039. say in

  1040. chapter 4

  1041. verse 14

  1042. if you're

  1043. insulted

  1044. because of

  1045. the name

  1046. of Christ

  1047. you are

  1048. blessed

  1049. for the

  1050. spirit of

  1051. glory and

  1052. of God

  1053. rests on

  1054. you

  1055. so these

  1056. trials

  1057. what we

  1058. undergo for

  1059. being children

  1060. of God

  1061. they are

  1062. a blessing

  1063. because they

  1064. strengthen our

  1065. faith

  1066. so when we're

  1067. at work

  1068. tomorrow

  1069. and we're

  1070. faced with

  1071. what we can

  1072. call persecution

  1073. let's

  1074. remember

  1075. that this

  1076. is part

  1077. of God's

  1078. plan

  1079. and not

  1080. because God

  1081. acts like

  1082. this mean

  1083. fitness instructor

  1084. who pushes us

  1085. to our limits

  1086. for the sake

  1087. of it

  1088. but because he

  1089. knows the

  1090. fruit that

  1091. these trials

  1092. will bring

  1093. to our

  1094. faith

  1095. and to

  1096. his kingdom

  1097. so we're

  1098. broken people

  1099. who endure

  1100. temporary

  1101. and necessary

  1102. trials due

  1103. to our

  1104. Christian

  1105. faith

  1106. but it

  1107. doesn't

  1108. stop there

  1109. because what

  1110. is the

  1111. flip side

  1112. of all

  1113. of this

  1114. it's that

  1115. we have

  1116. hope

  1117. because we

  1118. are believers

  1119. because our

  1120. hope is not

  1121. in whatever

  1122. is happening

  1123. to us

  1124. here on

  1125. this earth

  1126. our hope

  1127. is in that

  1128. inheritance

  1129. to come

  1130. and this

  1131. hope

  1132. Peter says

  1133. in verses

  1134. 6 and

  1135. 8

  1136. it produces

  1137. in us

  1138. great joy

  1139. inexpressible

  1140. and glorious

  1141. joy

  1142. we have

  1143. faith

  1144. in the

  1145. triune

  1146. God

  1147. of the

  1148. first

  1149. three

  1150. verses

  1151. we have

  1152. faith

  1153. in a

  1154. God

  1155. who is

  1156. our

  1157. father

  1158. in his

  1159. plan of

  1160. salvation

  1161. through

  1162. Jesus

  1163. and in

  1164. the

  1165. God

  1166. whose

  1167. spirit

  1168. is

  1169. working

  1170. in

  1171. us

  1172. this is

  1173. all back

  1174. in verses

  1175. 1 and

  1176. 2

  1177. and so

  1178. Peter

  1179. tells us

  1180. what this

  1181. faith looks

  1182. like

  1183. in verse

  1184. 8

  1185. these

  1186. Christians

  1187. have never

  1188. seen

  1189. Jesus

  1190. and yet

  1191. they love

  1192. him

  1193. that's

  1194. faith

  1195. and the

  1196. end result

  1197. of it

  1198. of this

  1199. faith

  1200. in verse

  1201. 9

  1202. is

  1203. the

  1204. salvation

  1205. of their

  1206. souls

  1207. nothing less

  1208. so

  1209. what are we

  1210. we are

  1211. broken people

  1212. in a broken

  1213. world

  1214. who have to

  1215. endure trials

  1216. because of

  1217. our faith

  1218. and therefore

  1219. lead

  1220. miserable

  1221. lives

  1222. no

  1223. because

  1224. this same

  1225. faith

  1226. which caused

  1227. the trials

  1228. in the

  1229. first place

  1230. it makes

  1231. us

  1232. overflow

  1233. with joy

  1234. at the

  1235. thought

  1236. of the

  1237. salvation

  1238. that it

  1239. produced

  1240. in us

  1241. so as we

  1242. wrap up

  1243. I have a

  1244. couple of

  1245. applications

  1246. for us all

  1247. to think

  1248. about

  1249. of the

  1250. back

  1251. of all

  1252. of this

  1253. the first

  1254. one

  1255. for any

  1256. of us

  1257. who are

  1258. struggling

  1259. with the

  1260. idea

  1261. of faith

  1262. in the

  1263. gospel

  1264. if we're

  1265. thinking

  1266. yeah okay

  1267. I'll believe

  1268. it when

  1269. I see

  1270. it

  1271. these

  1272. Christians

  1273. that Peter

  1274. is writing

  1275. to they

  1276. are proof

  1277. that faith

  1278. is enough

  1279. though you

  1280. have not

  1281. seen him

  1282. you love

  1283. him

  1284. Peter is

  1285. telling us

  1286. that this

  1287. book

  1288. the bible

  1289. is all

  1290. we need

  1291. it is

  1292. enough

  1293. evidence

  1294. maybe we're

  1295. doubting and

  1296. we're thinking

  1297. if only I

  1298. had a sign

  1299. but again

  1300. here is our

  1301. sign

  1302. Jesus

  1303. died for

  1304. us

  1305. and that's

  1306. all we

  1307. need

  1308. and then

  1309. for those

  1310. of us

  1311. who do

  1312. believe

  1313. then my

  1314. challenge

  1315. for us

  1316. is

  1317. where is

  1318. our joy

  1319. if I'm

  1320. honest with

  1321. myself

  1322. as someone

  1323. looks at

  1324. me from

  1325. the outside

  1326. do they

  1327. see a

  1328. joy in

  1329. Peter's

  1330. words so

  1331. great in

  1332. my salvation

  1333. and the

  1334. inheritance

  1335. which awaits

  1336. me that I

  1337. can't even

  1338. express it

  1339. as we

  1340. go about

  1341. our life

  1342. are the

  1343. truths of

  1344. the gospel

  1345. what we

  1346. focus on

  1347. what is it

  1348. the challenges

  1349. that our

  1350. Christian life

  1351. produce and

  1352. how sorry we

  1353. feel for

  1354. ourselves is

  1355. that what we're

  1356. focusing on

  1357. instead are

  1358. we using the

  1359. bible as a

  1360. compass to

  1361. lift our

  1362. eyes towards

  1363. the God

  1364. who chose

  1365. us these

  1366. amazing loving

  1367. God that

  1368. we're going to

  1369. go back to

  1370. for the rest

  1371. of eternity

  1372. and if the

  1373. answer to

  1374. these questions

  1375. is no

  1376. then can I

  1377. invite you to

  1378. grab someone

  1379. maybe at the

  1380. end of this

  1381. service and

  1382. just pray

  1383. together

  1384. let's pray

  1385. together and

  1386. ask God to

  1387. direct our

  1388. attention to

  1389. the greatness

  1390. of salvation

  1391. and the

  1392. greatness of

  1393. what is to

  1394. come

  1395. let's ask

  1396. him to

  1397. give us

  1398. perspective

  1399. let's go

  1400. back to

  1401. the

  1402. painting

  1403. as we

  1404. conclude

  1405. so I

  1406. ask myself

  1407. in the light

  1408. of everything

  1409. that Peter

  1410. tells us

  1411. what is the

  1412. problem with

  1413. this painting

  1414. and I think

  1415. it's that it

  1416. begins and

  1417. end on

  1418. earth

  1419. it doesn't

  1420. show us

  1421. where we

  1422. come from

  1423. the foreknowledge

  1424. of God the

  1425. father and it

  1426. certainly doesn't

  1427. show us where

  1428. we are going

  1429. eternity in

  1430. the presence

  1431. of God

  1432. perhaps it

  1433. partly shows

  1434. us where

  1435. we are

  1436. this broken

  1437. confusing

  1438. world but

  1439. it doesn't

  1440. show us the

  1441. joy that

  1442. we have in

  1443. the hope of

  1444. what is to

  1445. come as

  1446. Christians

  1447. how much

  1448. bigger and

  1449. just fuller

  1450. and more

  1451. beautiful is

  1452. the picture

  1453. that Peter

  1454. has painted

  1455. for us in

  1456. these 12

  1457. verses it's

  1458. infinitely

  1459. bigger

  1460. so as we

  1461. study the

  1462. rest of the

  1463. book in

  1464. the coming

  1465. Sundays

  1466. can I

  1467. encourage you

  1468. to try and

  1469. remind

  1470. yourselves of

  1471. what these

  1472. 12 verses

  1473. are all

  1474. about

  1475. is where

  1476. we are

  1477. from and

  1478. where we're

  1479. going really

  1480. is the

  1481. premise for

  1482. everything that

  1483. is to

  1484. follow and

  1485. it's the

  1486. only way that

  1487. we can find

  1488. the strength

  1489. that we need

  1490. to lift our

  1491. eyes and to

  1492. rejoice despite

  1493. our trials in

  1494. a God who

  1495. is in

  1496. control

  1497. rejoice in

  1498. our new

  1499. birth through

  1500. Jesus and

  1501. in the

  1502. salvation that

  1503. it brings

  1504. us

  1505. let's pray

  1506. father we

  1507. come to you

  1508. confessing that

  1509. we more

  1510. often than not

  1511. probably look

  1512. down rather

  1513. than up

  1514. we focus

  1515. on our

  1516. problems on

  1517. the here and

  1518. now rather

  1519. than on

  1520. your glory

  1521. and what

  1522. awaits us

  1523. so we

  1524. ask you to

  1525. forgive us

  1526. and we ask

  1527. for your

  1528. help to

  1529. just lift our

  1530. eyes and

  1531. be joyful

  1532. because we're

  1533. part of your

  1534. family and

  1535. because you've

  1536. saved us

  1537. father so we

  1538. just thank you

  1539. because you're

  1540. in control we

  1541. thank you for

  1542. your amazing

  1543. plan and we

  1544. thank you for

  1545. Jesus'

  1546. sacrifice and

  1547. the salvation

  1548. that it's

  1549. given us

  1550. amen
