  1. Good afternoon everyone, I'm Ian. Well done Jonathan and Corey. When you're asked to read, I think that's probably the last passage that you want, but beautifully done, thank you.

  2. The world is changing at a pace that's never been seen before.

  3. Urbanisation and ease of transport and travel mean that there's a lot more connected than there's ever been.

  4. Humans are harnessing the power of nature to make their lives better.

  5. The arts are flourishing. Technology is bringing about an ease of life that previous generations could hardly have dreamed of.

  6. And yet, marriage is being devalued.

  7. Anger and violence and pride are rife.

  8. Human life is valued cheaply.

  9. And the world's heading towards a climate catastrophe.

  10. Welcome to Genesis 4.

  11. Now I've tried to make it sound fairly modern, and obviously it's not.

  12. We're talking early Iron Age here.

  13. And yet many of the themes of what we see here are still very relevant today.

  14. And this passage, these two chapters that look full of names and genealogies, I think still have quite a lot to teach us and to help us to understand how God wants us to live in our day.

  15. Some theologians call the period that goes broadly from Adam to Noah as the dispensation of conscience.

  16. Now whether you agree with that theology or not, I think it's actually a helpful description.

  17. Because what's happening in this period is that by and large, human beings have very little knowledge of God.

  18. The law hasn't been given.

  19. The covenant promises through Noah and Abraham are still in the future.

  20. And largely, men and women are living by conscience of what we'd call today their moral compass.

  21. And we know, of course, that human conscience is flawed.

  22. It does not always get things right.

  23. I think that is very much a link with where we are today.

  24. By and large, people around us, even the people who are making our laws, don't really take God into account when they do it.

  25. They're going by what they want to think is right.

  26. But actually, very often, it's not in accordance with the Bible.

  27. And that, I think, brings Genesis 4 very much into the kind of territory we're in today.

  28. The title of Given Who Do You Think You Are, of course, is taken from the BBC genealogy program.

  29. But it may be relevant to what God thinks and what God thought in Genesis 4 about humans.

  30. Who do you think you are that you can go your own way and you can forget about my instructions?

  31. And in Genesis 4, it is personified in this family of Lamech.

  32. I think we could describe it as a very dysfunctional family in many ways, and yet a family of high achievers.

  33. And again, that's something that maybe is quite current in our day.

  34. That often the families where the people are the greatest achievers in the terms of this world they do the most,

  35. actually behind the scenes there are all sorts of problems.

  36. Sometimes they come out, sometimes they don't.

  37. But Lamech and his family, I think, really helpfully bring out the contrast in Genesis 4.

  38. I've called it civilization question mark.

  39. So on the one hand, you can see that mankind is progressing.

  40. That things are, from that point of view, getting better.

  41. So at the start of our reading, we had the first city being built, the start of urbanization.

  42. We then have this man, Jabal, the first of Lamech's sons.

  43. It says he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.

  44. Now in his own way, living in tents was probably almost as significant as building cities.

  45. Building cities meant you could group together and people could live together and help each other.

  46. But building, having tents meant they could move around and they could go to the best places,

  47. in this case the best places for pasture for their flocks.

  48. Lamech also was the one who started farming, systematic farming,

  49. rather than just having lots of beasts breeding and so on, seemed to go back to him.

  50. Then the second son, Jubal, who was the musician.

  51. I don't think it was violins and trumpets, but to get the idea.

  52. He was the one who first started making music and seeing that as part of human life

  53. and something that people could enjoy and benefit from.

  54. And then the third son was Jubal Cain, and he was the one who made tools.

  55. He got bronze and he got iron, and he made things that would make life easier.

  56. And all of these things are presented to us as mankind, humankind, really progressing.

  57. Civilization is growing and developing, and that's a good thing.

  58. But at the same time, we're told a number of things about Lamech that would make us pause

  59. and think, well, perhaps it's not all good.

  60. The first thing we see is that he had two wives.

  61. Now, it's not uncommon in the Old Testament to have more than one wife.

  62. Many of the leading characters in the Old Testament, like David, indeed did.

  63. But this is beginning to get away from God's plan for marriage.

  64. Remember God's plan for marriage?

  65. One husband, one wife, they become one flesh.

  66. And as soon as you introduce the third person into that, it's kind of going.

  67. You don't have the same value being placed on marriage and on the intimacy of relationship,

  68. which is a one-to-one thing.

  69. And then in Lamech, you have violence.

  70. Violence like you had with Cain, and perhaps in some ways even worse.

  71. Now, the poem that Lamech gives us in the passage is quite interesting.

  72. I've killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.

  73. If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech 77 times.

  74. What's he saying?

  75. On the surface, I think maybe he's saying,

  76. my crime is not as bad as Cain's crime.

  77. Cain killed Abel in cold blood, if you like.

  78. It was murder.

  79. Lamech is saying, well, it wasn't murder in my case.

  80. Someone came and attacked me.

  81. I defended myself, and I killed them.

  82. And if Cain has God's protection seven times,

  83. then I deserve even more.

  84. I deserve 77 times.

  85. But of course, in it all, he is really just boasting in himself and in his power.

  86. He has no concern for the young man he killed.

  87. Doesn't sound like that young man had done him great harm.

  88. Maybe had some kind of feud with him.

  89. He'd come and attacked him.

  90. And Lamech had responded.

  91. He over-responded.

  92. And he had ended up killing the man.

  93. And he thinks, well, that's okay.

  94. If someone comes up against me and does things I don't like

  95. and hurts me in some kind of way,

  96. I'll get back at them,

  97. and I'll do it much worse than they did to me.

  98. Sound familiar?

  99. In our day, that kind of thing happens as well.

  100. And this thing of seven times and 77 times is interesting as well.

  101. So Lamech is saying, I deserve extra protection compared with Cain.

  102. Now, actually, Cain received God's grace,

  103. which he didn't deserve as a murderer.

  104. However, Lamech is assuming that he can have the same grace

  105. and that he in some way deserves it.

  106. He has totally misunderstood a God

  107. and the kind of relationship we should have with him.

  108. And it's interesting also because the Lord Jesus picks up on it

  109. in the New Testament.

  110. Jesus has a conversation with Peter

  111. where Peter says, well, how often should I forgive somebody?

  112. Should I forgive them as many as seven times?

  113. Peter's thinking, this is really good.

  114. I'm showing him a really good follower of Jesus.

  115. I'm willing to forgive even up to seven times.

  116. And Jesus says, no, not seven times, but 77 times,

  117. or perhaps it's 70 times seven times

  118. that people disagree on that.

  119. But I'm sure he was echoing what Lamech said.

  120. But instead of talking about vengeance and about getting revenge,

  121. Jesus is talking about the love that we should show

  122. and the forgiveness that we should offer.

  123. So the world under Lamech is regressing.

  124. It's going backwards because although technology

  125. and everything else is doing fine,

  126. in the human heart, things are getting worse

  127. and the pride of life and the desire to have more for ourselves

  128. and to do whatever we need to to other people

  129. is greater and greater.

  130. So what's the application for today?

  131. Well, the first thing I think is

  132. we should celebrate the achievements of our generation.

  133. We should celebrate the fact that in most of our lifetimes,

  134. man has made so much progress

  135. in understanding our environment,

  136. in using it for our good,

  137. in developing technology,

  138. that even 20 years ago,

  139. certainly 50, 100 years ago,

  140. people could hardly have dreamed of.

  141. And we should celebrate it

  142. because we're using the talents that God has given us

  143. to find out more about his world

  144. and about his universe.

  145. As someone said,

  146. we're thinking God's thoughts after him.

  147. And we shouldn't despise technology

  148. or the arts

  149. or the way man harnesses the world

  150. as long as it's done in a positive way.

  151. That is something to be celebrated

  152. and to be enjoyed.

  153. It's something that God wants us

  154. to rejoice in

  155. and to benefit from

  156. and to give him the glory for

  157. because he has given us the minds,

  158. the mental capacity

  159. to be able to do these things

  160. and to appreciate them.

  161. So there definitely is an element

  162. as we look at this

  163. that we should rejoice in God

  164. and rejoice in what is happening,

  165. that his universe is so marvellous

  166. and we're just now finding out

  167. what's always been there

  168. and which is beyond our comprehension

  169. in many ways.

  170. But at the same time,

  171. we need to recognise

  172. that we're living in a world

  173. which is in many ways

  174. regressing.

  175. Marriage.

  176. I don't think bigamy

  177. is a big issue

  178. in this country

  179. in our day.

  180. But perhaps that's because

  181. people don't think

  182. you need to bother

  183. to get married

  184. if you want to have

  185. an intimate relationship

  186. with someone.

  187. You can have two women

  188. or you can have two men

  189. and that's okay.

  190. You don't have to tie the knot

  191. for that.

  192. And just one example

  193. of the way in which marriage

  194. is being devalued

  195. and we're getting further

  196. and further away

  197. from God's plan for us.

  198. And then you look at attitudes.

  199. And you see in many ways

  200. a real pride

  201. and arrogance

  202. about many people.

  203. We see it in our leaders.

  204. We see it perhaps also

  205. in ourselves

  206. and those we come into contact with.

  207. And some of the great things

  208. that we're finding

  209. that we're inventing

  210. are also doing great harm.

  211. So the internet is wonderful.

  212. The way that we have access

  213. to information

  214. that no one in any generation

  215. before has ever had.

  216. I want to find something out.

  217. I go into Google.

  218. I go into Wikipedia

  219. or somewhere

  220. and it's there

  221. and it's great.

  222. And yet the internet

  223. has fuelled

  224. the rise in pornography

  225. and in people

  226. interacting with their computers

  227. rather than

  228. with one another.

  229. Mobile phones are great.

  230. We are more connected

  231. with each other

  232. than ever before.

  233. Even if we're out and about

  234. we can easily talk

  235. to each other by phone

  236. or we can text each other

  237. or we can use social media

  238. or whatever.

  239. And yet how often

  240. is social media

  241. used in a way

  242. that's inappropriate?

  243. That's intemperate.

  244. We've seen the example

  245. of that in our own country

  246. this week.

  247. We could go to America

  248. and some of the things

  249. the president there

  250. has said on social media

  251. and we look at it

  252. and say

  253. yes, social media

  254. is a great thing

  255. but man is not using it

  256. in the way

  257. that we should.

  258. Our world is

  259. in many ways

  260. regressing

  261. even as it is

  262. progressing.

  263. What shall response be

  264. to that?

  265. Well right at the end

  266. of Genesis 4

  267. in this chapter

  268. full of names

  269. and this family

  270. which has so many problems

  271. we have the birth

  272. of another child

  273. a man named Seth

  274. and then his son

  275. Enosh

  276. and at the end it says

  277. at that time

  278. people began to call

  279. on the name

  280. of the Lord.

  281. Even in this world

  282. where God was

  283. largely forgotten about

  284. and was glorying

  285. in his developments

  286. and in his power

  287. rather than

  288. in God.

  289. There were people

  290. who recognized

  291. that they couldn't do

  292. without God.

  293. The name of the Lord

  294. that's used here

  295. if you've got a Bible

  296. in front of you

  297. you'll see it's in

  298. capital letters.

  299. It's the covenant name

  300. of God

  301. later in the Old Testament

  302. Yahweh.

  303. Not sure how much

  304. the people then

  305. would have understood

  306. exactly what that meant.

  307. But it is calling

  308. on the God

  309. who is personal

  310. and the God

  311. who is interested.

  312. And there were some people

  313. perhaps not many

  314. who recognized

  315. the importance

  316. of that.

  317. And for us today

  318. if we're Christians

  319. we call on the name

  320. of the Lord.

  321. And we give thanks

  322. for all the great things

  323. that are happening

  324. in his wonderful world.

  325. But we should also

  326. be on our knees

  327. as we see around us

  328. that people are getting

  329. further and further

  330. away from God

  331. and from his standards.

  332. We are called

  333. to call upon

  334. the name

  335. of the Lord.

  336. So that's Genesis 4.

  337. What do we make

  338. of Genesis 5

  339. which is even more

  340. a long list

  341. of names

  342. and of dates.

  343. Well genealogies

  344. in the Bible

  345. are quite important.

  346. And this particular

  347. genealogy

  348. is the introduction

  349. to a new section

  350. in Genesis

  351. which runs

  352. basically through

  353. the account of Noah.

  354. So we finish off

  355. in chapter 4

  356. essentially

  357. the creation narrative

  358. and we're now

  359. coming on to

  360. the Noah narrative.

  361. And as a link

  362. in that

  363. the writer positions

  364. where the two

  365. sit together.

  366. So it takes us

  367. from Adam

  368. down to Noah.

  369. If we keep going

  370. through the Bible

  371. we can get that list

  372. taken right down

  373. and it ends up

  374. with Jesus.

  375. The key genealogy

  376. in the Bible

  377. starts with Adam

  378. or starts actually

  379. with God

  380. if you read it

  381. in Luke's Gospel

  382. and it ends

  383. with Jesus.

  384. The writer is

  385. positioning here

  386. where Adam

  387. and Noah

  388. sit together.

  389. But I think

  390. there's more to it

  391. than that.

  392. Quite a lot of people

  393. are into family history

  394. I am myself

  395. and it can be

  396. quite fascinating.

  397. Now when you do

  398. family history

  399. you have two things

  400. that you look at.

  401. One is

  402. you get a long list

  403. of names

  404. and of dates.

  405. So you go through

  406. your ancestors

  407. you go through

  408. the record office

  409. and the birth

  410. and marriage

  411. and death certificates

  412. and the censuses

  413. and everything else

  414. that's available

  415. and you end up

  416. with a big chart

  417. which has lots

  418. of names of people

  419. and lots of ages

  420. or dates on it.

  421. And that in a sense

  422. is the core

  423. of doing

  424. your family tree.

  425. It is looking

  426. at the lives

  427. of ordinary people

  428. but actually

  429. just looking at

  430. their names

  431. and a small amount

  432. of information

  433. about them.

  434. But when you do

  435. family history

  436. very often

  437. you find someone

  438. you think

  439. that person

  440. looks interesting.

  441. Perhaps I can find

  442. out a little bit

  443. more about them.

  444. Now in my family tree

  445. there's no one

  446. who's particularly famous.

  447. I don't think

  448. there's anyone

  449. you could Google

  450. and find much

  451. information about them

  452. before my grandfather.

  453. Previous generations

  454. largely forgotten.

  455. But there are

  456. interesting people.

  457. There are some

  458. very strong women.

  459. There are some

  460. families which went

  461. through really

  462. difficult times.

  463. And there are

  464. some people

  465. who think

  466. well it would be

  467. good to find

  468. out a bit more

  469. about them.

  470. They look

  471. quite interesting.

  472. And that's what

  473. the writer does

  474. in this chapter.

  475. There's a long

  476. list of what I've

  477. called ordinary

  478. lives.

  479. And then he has

  480. a couple of

  481. examples of what

  482. we might call

  483. extraordinary lives.

  484. lives.

  485. So I've called

  486. this one

  487. lives well lived.

  488. As I said

  489. there are

  490. ordinary lives

  491. and there are

  492. extraordinary lives.

  493. Now you might

  494. look at Genesis 5

  495. and say there are

  496. no ordinary lives

  497. here.

  498. Almost everyone

  499. on this list

  500. lived to be

  501. over 900 years

  502. old.

  503. That's kind of

  504. not normal

  505. in our day.

  506. So let's just

  507. deal with that

  508. one quickly

  509. before we look

  510. in more detail

  511. at the genealogy.

  512. There are a number

  513. of different views

  514. about what

  515. the ages here

  516. mean.

  517. Some people

  518. think it could

  519. be dynasties

  520. that are being

  521. talked about.

  522. So when it

  523. talks about Adam

  524. or it talks

  525. about Methuselah

  526. whoever,

  527. it's not talking

  528. about an

  529. individual,

  530. it's talking

  531. about a

  532. dynasty was

  533. started with

  534. that person.

  535. And so having

  536. dynasties for

  537. 900 odd years

  538. isn't out of

  539. the question.

  540. The problem

  541. with that is

  542. at least a

  543. couple of

  544. people on

  545. this list

  546. are definitely

  547. presented as

  548. being real

  549. individuals.

  550. They're not

  551. just a dynasty,

  552. they are real

  553. people who

  554. had real

  555. lives.

  556. So that is

  557. slightly difficult.

  558. Second possibility

  559. is it says

  560. years.

  561. Actually does it

  562. mean months

  563. or does it

  564. mean something

  565. different?

  566. So is the

  567. time period

  568. the same

  569. as ours?

  570. Again quite

  571. difficult because

  572. if you look at

  573. the ages of

  574. the people

  575. when they had

  576. children and

  577. when they

  578. died,

  579. if they had

  580. kind of normal

  581. lifespans we

  582. think of today,

  583. there were things

  584. like they became

  585. a father when

  586. they were seven

  587. years old and

  588. that really

  589. doesn't work.

  590. There's

  591. genealogy a few

  592. chapters on where

  593. it says people

  594. had children

  595. that kind of

  596. what we think

  597. were normal

  598. ages like

  599. 30 and so

  600. on but not

  601. in this one

  602. and I think

  603. it is difficult

  604. to think that

  605. it could just

  606. be months

  607. rather than

  608. years.

  609. So could it

  610. be really

  611. people living

  612. for that

  613. long?

  614. Well maybe

  615. it could.

  616. We are pre-flood

  617. and we are in

  618. a different

  619. environment from

  620. what we have

  621. now.

  622. Perhaps some

  623. remnant of the

  624. tree of life

  625. that Adam

  626. and Eve

  627. had originally

  628. eaten from

  629. before they

  630. were thrown

  631. out of the

  632. garden of

  633. Eden.

  634. Perhaps that

  635. was still

  636. affecting things.

  637. Maybe they

  638. had a very

  639. long life.

  640. That has its

  641. own difficulties.

  642. Why would

  643. you wait

  644. hundreds of

  645. years before

  646. you had

  647. your first

  648. child?

  649. Things like

  650. that.

  651. But maybe

  652. it's the

  653. best explanation.

  654. I don't

  655. know.

  656. I'll leave

  657. that to

  658. you.

  659. But actually

  660. although the

  661. writer undoubtedly

  662. means us to

  663. notice the

  664. ages,

  665. they're not

  666. the key

  667. point of

  668. this passage.

  669. The key

  670. thing in

  671. this chapter

  672. is that

  673. people were

  674. born,

  675. they had

  676. children,

  677. and they

  678. died.

  679. They were

  680. born,

  681. they had

  682. children,

  683. they died

  684. generation

  685. after generation.

  686. That is

  687. ordinary

  688. life.

  689. You're

  690. born,

  691. you may

  692. not have

  693. family,

  694. and you

  695. die.

  696. That for

  697. virtually every

  698. human who

  699. has ever

  700. lived,

  701. that is the

  702. pattern of

  703. life.

  704. That is the

  705. pattern of

  706. our lives

  707. unless the

  708. Lord should

  709. return before

  710. we die.

  711. And the

  712. writer is

  713. saying to

  714. us,

  715. this is the

  716. curse that

  717. came on

  718. Adam,

  719. the death

  720. that came

  721. through

  722. Adam,

  723. this is

  724. it in

  725. practice.

  726. People were

  727. born,

  728. they lived,

  729. they perhaps

  730. had families,

  731. and then they

  732. died,

  733. and they

  734. were gone.

  735. They had

  736. ordinary

  737. lives.

  738. And then

  739. in the

  740. middle of

  741. that,

  742. there are

  743. a couple

  744. of

  745. extraordinary

  746. lives.

  747. Now we

  748. have at the

  749. beginning,

  750. Seth, I'm

  751. not going to

  752. talk in

  753. any detail

  754. about Seth,

  755. notice Seth

  756. in the

  757. likeness of

  758. Adam,

  759. Adam in

  760. the likeness

  761. of God.

  762. Does that

  763. mean Seth

  764. in the

  765. likeness of

  766. God?

  767. To some

  768. extent,

  769. yes,

  770. but also

  771. affected by

  772. the fall.

  773. But the

  774. two are

  775. really

  776. interesting,

  777. Enoch

  778. and Noah.

  779. And these

  780. are the

  781. two men in

  782. the Old

  783. Testament where

  784. it says they

  785. walked with

  786. God or

  787. they walked

  788. faithfully

  789. with God.

  790. Noah, that

  791. is mentioned

  792. in chapter

  793. six.

  794. Enoch is

  795. before us

  796. in this

  797. chapter.

  798. And these

  799. are held

  800. up to us

  801. as examples

  802. of people

  803. who were

  804. different.

  805. They weren't

  806. just ordinary,

  807. lived, had

  808. family, died.

  809. They were

  810. people in

  811. their lives

  812. lived

  813. differently

  814. and behaved

  815. differently.

  816. And so

  817. at the

  818. end, they

  819. were treated

  820. differently.

  821. Enoch, it

  822. says, never

  823. died.

  824. God took

  825. him.

  826. Noah was

  827. saved from

  828. the flood.

  829. And both

  830. of them, when

  831. we come to

  832. the New

  833. Testament, are

  834. seen as

  835. important

  836. characters.

  837. Particularly in

  838. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  839. 11, we have

  840. that great list

  841. of men of

  842. faith.

  843. Then prominent

  844. among them

  845. are Enoch

  846. and Noah.

  847. and a

  848. reminder in

  849. that chapter

  850. that these

  851. were men

  852. who trusted

  853. in God

  854. and who

  855. sought to

  856. live their

  857. lives for

  858. God.

  859. Enoch, the

  860. shortest lived

  861. of all the

  862. people in

  863. this chapter,

  864. but only

  865. because God

  866. took him.

  867. Noah, the

  868. one who

  869. out-survived

  870. all the

  871. others, he

  872. was the

  873. only one

  874. in the

  875. list who

  876. came through

  877. the flood.

  878. Methuselah,

  879. just passing

  880. aside, Methuselah

  881. died in the

  882. year of the

  883. flood, if you

  884. count up the

  885. number of

  886. years.

  887. Noah was

  888. the only

  889. one who

  890. came through

  891. the flood.

  892. And Noah

  893. is presented,

  894. and we're

  895. going to look

  896. at Noah

  897. over the

  898. next couple

  899. of weeks

  900. in more

  901. detail, he

  902. is presented

  903. by his

  904. father as

  905. someone, he

  906. says, who

  907. will comfort

  908. us in

  909. labour and

  910. painful toil

  911. of our

  912. hands caused

  913. by the

  914. ground God

  915. has cursed.

  916. Now you

  917. wouldn't think

  918. of Noah and

  919. comfort necessarily

  920. together.

  921. Noah was the

  922. preacher of

  923. doom.

  924. He was the

  925. one who

  926. alone with

  927. his family

  928. was saved

  929. when the

  930. world was

  931. destroyed.

  932. But if we

  933. jump forward

  934. to Genesis

    Genesis 8 chapter mention

  935. chapter 8,

  936. in Genesis

    Genesis 8 chapter mention

  937. chapter 8,

  938. God does

  939. give us that

  940. comfort through

  941. Noah as

  942. he sends

  943. Noah out

  944. to manage

  945. the earth

  946. and as he

  947. promises there

  948. will never be

  949. another flood.

  950. But what do we

  951. make of Enoch

  952. and Noah?

  953. They are important

  954. characters in

  955. their own right,

  956. but a lot

  957. of their

  958. significance is

  959. that they

  960. point forward

  961. to Jesus.

  962. There are

  963. people in

  964. the Old

  965. Testament who

  966. displayed the

  967. kind of

  968. characteristics

  969. that we

  970. look for

  971. from Jesus

  972. in the

  973. New Testament.

  974. Enoch

  975. walked with

  976. God.

  977. And Jesus

  978. walked with

  979. God.

  980. In his life

  981. on earth,

  982. he was

  983. completely

  984. obedient to

  985. God his

  986. father,

  987. and he

  988. was dependent

  989. on God

  990. his father.

  991. And he

  992. had that

  993. intimate

  994. relationship,

  995. but he

  996. knew his

  997. father's

  998. will and

  999. was able

  1000. to pass

  1001. it on to

  1002. others and

  1003. to live

  1004. a perfect

  1005. life.

  1006. Jesus

  1007. walked

  1008. with God.

  1009. I know

  1010. in the Old

  1011. Testament it

  1012. is a picture

  1013. of Jesus

  1014. as one

  1015. who is

  1016. able to

  1017. save.

  1018. He is

  1019. saved by

  1020. God,

  1021. but a

  1022. picture of

  1023. God's

  1024. salvation.

  1025. As God

  1026. in his

  1027. mercy

  1028. spares

  1029. this

  1030. small

  1031. family

  1032. and takes

  1033. them

  1034. through

  1035. the

  1036. flood

  1037. and

  1038. brings

  1039. them

  1040. out

  1041. the

  1042. other

  1043. side.

  1044. And

  1045. knowing

  1046. that

  1047. gives us

  1048. a picture

  1049. of what

  1050. happens

  1051. with

  1052. Jesus.

  1053. Those who

  1054. are willing

  1055. to believe

  1056. the message

  1057. that Jesus

  1058. brings us,

  1059. those who

  1060. are willing

  1061. to put

  1062. their trust

  1063. in him,

  1064. are saved

  1065. from their

  1066. sin and

  1067. from all

  1068. the filth

  1069. that is in

  1070. our lives,

  1071. the things

  1072. we were

  1073. talking about

  1074. earlier,

  1075. through the

  1076. death of

  1077. the Lord

  1078. Jesus,

  1079. we are

  1080. able to

  1081. be brought

  1082. into a

  1083. relationship

  1084. with God.

  1085. So Enoch

  1086. and Noah

  1087. pictures

  1088. of Jesus.

  1089. But what

  1090. does it

  1091. mean to

  1092. walk

  1093. with God?

  1094. Let me

  1095. just bring

  1096. you three

  1097. verses from

  1098. the New

  1099. Testament that

  1100. I think

  1101. will help

  1102. us with

  1103. that.

  1104. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1105. chapter 11

  1106. is the

  1107. passage about

  1108. Enoch,

  1109. and it

  1110. says that

  1111. faith means

  1112. you believe

  1113. that God

  1114. exists and

  1115. that he

  1116. rewards those

  1117. who earnestly

  1118. seek him.

  1119. So the

  1120. first thing

  1121. of walking

  1122. with God,

  1123. what we

  1124. learn from

  1125. Enoch,

  1126. is we

  1127. need to

  1128. seek God,

  1129. we need

  1130. to look

  1131. to do

  1132. his will,

  1133. we need

  1134. to have

  1135. a faith

  1136. in him.

  1137. We need

  1138. to know

  1139. God and

  1140. to know

  1141. him in

  1142. our lives.

  1143. The Old

  1144. Testament book

  1145. of Micah,

  1146. it says,

  1147. what does

  1148. the Lord

  1149. require of

  1150. you?

  1151. To act

  1152. justly and

  1153. to love

  1154. mercy and

  1155. to walk

  1156. humbly

  1157. with your

  1158. God.

  1159. Very significant

  1160. word there,

  1161. humbly.

  1162. If we walk

  1163. with God,

  1164. we need to

  1165. recognize how

  1166. great he is

  1167. and how

  1168. insignificant by

  1169. comparison we

  1170. are.

  1171. As we see

  1172. our great

  1173. God, that

  1174. should be

  1175. something that

  1176. humbles us

  1177. and helps us

  1178. to understand

  1179. how much

  1180. greater he

  1181. is than

  1182. we could

  1183. ever think

  1184. or imagine

  1185. and by

  1186. comparison how

  1187. insignificant we

  1188. are but

  1189. still in our

  1190. insignificance

  1191. loved by

  1192. God.

  1193. And then

  1194. the Apostle

  1195. John, in

  1196. his first

  1197. letter, he

  1198. says, if we

  1199. walk in the

  1200. light as he,

  1201. that is Jesus,

  1202. is in the

  1203. light, God

  1204. is in the

  1205. light, we

  1206. have fellowship

  1207. with one

  1208. another and

  1209. the blood of

  1210. Jesus, his

  1211. son, purifies

  1212. us from

  1213. all sin.

  1214. So walking

  1215. means walking

  1216. in the

  1217. light.

  1218. It means

  1219. trying to

  1220. do the

  1221. things that

  1222. are right

  1223. and to

  1224. recognize what

  1225. God's pattern

  1226. for life is

  1227. and not to

  1228. walk in the

  1229. darkness, ignoring

  1230. God as all

  1231. these people in

  1232. Genesis 4 seem

  1233. to have done,

  1234. but to walk

  1235. with him and

  1236. to seek to

  1237. be obedient

  1238. to him.

  1239. Faith,

  1240. humility,

  1241. light.

  1242. these are

  1243. things that

  1244. should

  1245. characterize

  1246. our walk

  1247. with God.

  1248. So, who

  1249. do you

  1250. think you

  1251. are?

  1252. I hope

  1253. from what

  1254. we've seen

  1255. that for

  1256. most of

  1257. us, we

  1258. are going

  1259. to be, in

  1260. this world's

  1261. terms, pretty

  1262. insignificant.

  1263. I might

  1264. think my

  1265. life is

  1266. important just

  1267. now, give

  1268. it a hundred

  1269. years, and

  1270. I'll be doing

  1271. well if anyone

  1272. remembers me as

  1273. more than a

  1274. name.

  1275. In this

  1276. world, all

  1277. of us

  1278. ultimately are

  1279. fairly

  1280. insignificant,

  1281. and we

  1282. will be,

  1283. whether we

  1284. like it or

  1285. not, we

  1286. will be

  1287. largely

  1288. forgotten

  1289. very soon

  1290. after our

  1291. death.

  1292. And yet

  1293. the Bible

  1294. would tell

  1295. us that

  1296. although that

  1297. is absolutely

  1298. true, we

  1299. also have a

  1300. wonderful

  1301. status before

  1302. God.

  1303. Who do you

  1304. think you

  1305. are?

  1306. Who do I

  1307. think I

  1308. am?

  1309. I am a

  1310. child of

  1311. God.

  1312. I'm a

  1313. sinner.

  1314. I don't

  1315. deserve

  1316. anything, but

  1317. because of

  1318. God's grace, I

  1319. have this

  1320. wonderful status

  1321. of being his

  1322. child, and

  1323. because of my

  1324. faith in

  1325. Jesus, being

  1326. able to look

  1327. forward and

  1328. to know that

  1329. one day I'll

  1330. go to be

  1331. with him

  1332. forever.

  1333. And when you

  1334. think of that,

  1335. what happens

  1336. in this world,

  1337. and what people

  1338. might think of

  1339. me when I'm

  1340. gone, actually

  1341. doesn't matter

  1342. that much.

  1343. What matters

  1344. is the

  1345. relationship I

  1346. have with

  1347. God and

  1348. the confidence

  1349. I can have

  1350. in him,

  1351. knowing that

  1352. I matter to

  1353. him, and

  1354. if my trust

  1355. is in him,

  1356. in the

  1357. Lord Jesus,

  1358. then my

  1359. future is

  1360. secure.

  1361. And I'm

  1362. not looking

  1363. at 70,

  1364. 80,

  1365. 90,

  1366. maybe even

  1367. 100 years

  1368. in this

  1369. world.

  1370. I'm looking

  1371. at an

  1372. eternity spent

  1373. with Jesus

  1374. and enjoying

  1375. his presence

  1376. and understanding

  1377. more of his

  1378. greatness and

  1379. the wonderful

  1380. world he's

  1381. made and

  1382. the wonderful

  1383. grace that

  1384. he has shown

  1385. in dying

  1386. for me on

  1387. that cross

  1388. and giving

  1389. me my

  1390. relationship

  1391. with God.

  1392. So we should

  1393. go away this

  1394. morning perhaps

  1395. reflecting on

  1396. the world

  1397. round about

  1398. us, on

  1399. the great

  1400. advances that

  1401. are being

  1402. made, but

  1403. also the

  1404. issues that

  1405. we see

  1406. everywhere we

  1407. look, reflecting

  1408. perhaps on

  1409. our own

  1410. sinfulness, our

  1411. own failure, our

  1412. own insignificance.

  1413. But knowing

  1414. that in God's

  1415. sight we're

  1416. important, we

  1417. matter, and

  1418. he wants all

  1419. of us to

  1420. have a real

  1421. relationship with

  1422. him as we

  1423. walk with

  1424. him, as we

  1425. call on him,

  1426. as we know

  1427. him as our

  1428. father.

  1429. If you're not

  1430. in that position

  1431. yet, I'd

  1432. urge you to

  1433. think about

  1434. your relationship

  1435. with God, the

  1436. things that

  1437. really matter

  1438. in life.

  1439. And if you

  1440. are, let's

  1441. go out, let's

  1442. pray for our

  1443. world, let's

  1444. walk the way

  1445. that Jesus

  1446. walked, let's

  1447. be God's

  1448. people in

  1449. our generation,

  1450. not just

  1451. ordinary lives,

  1452. but extraordinary

  1453. lives, because

  1454. they're lived

  1455. for God.

  1456. Let's pray

  1457. together.

  1458. Father, we

  1459. thank you for

  1460. your word.

  1461. We thank you

  1462. for this rather

  1463. obscure passage,

  1464. which nevertheless

  1465. has so much

  1466. to teach us.

  1467. We thank you

  1468. that you are a

  1469. great God, and

  1470. when we see all

  1471. that man is

  1472. able to achieve

  1473. now, we

  1474. should recognize

  1475. that all he is

  1476. doing is

  1477. thinking your

  1478. thoughts after

  1479. you, uncovering,

  1480. unraveling some

  1481. of the marvelous

  1482. intricacies of

  1483. your creation.

  1484. But we do

  1485. grieve for the

  1486. world around us.

  1487. We grieve for the

  1488. sin, for the

  1489. devaluing of

  1490. marriage, for

  1491. the way that

  1492. pride affects

  1493. all of our

  1494. lives, for the

  1495. conflict that

  1496. there is, for

  1497. the things that

  1498. are done that

  1499. are wrong.

  1500. Help us to be

  1501. in prayer to

  1502. you about

  1503. them.

  1504. But help us

  1505. above all, each

  1506. of us, to make

  1507. sure that we are

  1508. in a living

  1509. relationship with

  1510. you and with

  1511. the Lord Jesus,

  1512. and that in our

  1513. lives we seek to

  1514. walk with God

  1515. so that we

  1516. become not

  1517. ordinary lives,

  1518. but extraordinary

  1519. lives as

  1520. children of God

  1521. shining as

  1522. lights in our

  1523. world.

  1524. We give you

  1525. thanks and we

  1526. commit ourselves

  1527. to you in the

  1528. name of the

  1529. Lord Jesus.

  1530. Amen.
