  1. Well, good morning everyone and let me add my welcome to Graham's. My name is Alistair.

  2. I have the privilege of being the Assistant Pastor of Brunsfield Evangelical Church

  3. and the privilege of walking us through a wonderful passage of Scripture this morning.

  4. But before we turn to God's Word, let's bow our heads and pray together.

  5. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the age in which we live where you've given us the technology

  6. to make this service possible, where we can get the Word of God into people's houses

  7. despite social isolation and despite distancing.

  8. Father, we pray that as we turn to your Word this morning, that you would still our hearts.

  9. And Father, we pray that the words of my mouth and the meditations of all of our hearts

  10. would be pleasing to you, our Rock and our Redeemer.

  11. In Jesus' name, we pray these things. Amen.

  12. How do you respond to temptation?

  13. I recently saw a social experiment video where children were in a room

  14. and on a table in front of them was a bar of chocolate.

  15. And they were instructed not to touch the bar of chocolate just for 10 more minutes.

  16. And if they did, they would receive an additional bar of chocolate to eat.

  17. 10 minutes of restraint.

  18. 10 minutes of minor temptation.

  19. 11 minutes of vacation.

  20. 12 minutes of invitation.

  21. 14 minutes of abortion.

  22. 14 minutes of temptation.

  23. 15 minutes of meditation.

  24. 16 minutes of meditation.

  25. 16 minutes of temptation.

  26. But the majority of children didn't last and just died straight in to the chocolate bar.

  27. Now, why?

  28. Well, because we can't last long in our own strength in the face of temptation.

  29. now it's all good and well to watch those funny videos and laugh but

  30. on a more serious note every single one of us faces temptation every single day don't we

  31. it could be that we're tempted during this time of uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus

  32. to get caught up in the the gossip and the bad news and to spiral into a pit of despair

  33. instead of focusing on our great God who is unchanging who is faithful and who is loving

  34. or maybe we're tempted to ignore everything the government and medical experts are telling us

  35. and instead we start speaking badly and thinking badly of those God has put over us

  36. at our own risk and to the risk of others or maybe it's once you've reached day three of your isolation

  37. you might be tempted to lose your temper your fuse gets just that little bit shorter

  38. you lash out at the children because they aren't listening or if you're a child maybe you're tempted

  39. to annoy your parents a little bit more just for some fun we are surrounded by temptation day to day

  40. and it isn't always the most obvious things in the world either it could be that hidden sin that no one

  41. knows about but that eats you up from the inside out every single time and you just can't stop

  42. temptation is all around and we fight it every single day and the passage we're going to look at this

  43. morning is all about temptation but it's not about our temptation it's about the temptation of our Lord

  44. Jesus Christ and the reality is that the opposite of temptation for the Christian is obedience to God

  45. so if you're obeying God in a specific with a specific thing or in a specific area

  46. you can't then be tempted at the same time with that thing obedience is key to temptation

  47. temptation this morning we will see how Jesus too faced the most severe temptations

  48. but most importantly we will see how Jesus stood firm in his perfect obedience to the will of his father

  49. temptation is all around us and we so easily succumb to it

  50. this is part of our fallen nature part of the sin that has dwelt in the hearts of mankind since

  51. Genesis 3 but this morning we're going to see why it is so important that Jesus was tempted

  52. how his temptation can help us and most importantly why it is so important that though he was tempted

  53. he remained sinless so turn with me if you will to Luke chapter 4 and we'll start reading

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  54. at verse 1 through to verse 13 Luke chapter 4 verse 1 says this

    Luke 4:1

  55. Jesus full of the Holy Spirit left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness

  56. where for 40 days he was tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and at the end

  57. of them he was hungry the devil said to him if you were the son of God

  58. tell this stone to become bread

  59. Jesus answered it is written man shall not live on bread alone

  60. the devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world

  61. and he said to him I will give you all their authority and splendor it has been given to me

  62. and I can give it to anyone I want to if you worship me it will all be yours

  63. Jesus answered it is written worship the Lord your God and serve him only

  64. the devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple

  65. if you are the son of God he said throw yourself down from here

  66. for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully

  67. they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone

  68. Jesus answered it is said do not put the Lord your God to the test

  69. when the devil had finished all this tempting he left him until an opportune time

  70. that is the Lord's word

  71. now there are two things that we need to be sure of as we come to a passage like this

  72. we need to see that this temptation is ordained by God

  73. but it is not God who tempts Jesus

  74. so look with me at verse 1

  75. it says Jesus full of the Holy Spirit left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness

  76. Satan is the one trying to entice Jesus to sin

  77. Satan is the voice trying to sow doubt and disobedience in Jesus' mind

  78. God is not doing the tempting but God has taken Jesus to the place where he will be tempted

  79. remember how in the book of Genesis that we've been studying together

  80. we were thinking about how Adam was tempted and yet he failed

  81. well Jesus in the New Testament is described as the second Adam

  82. therefore the temptation of Jesus is important because all of it is God's will

  83. God's will was for Jesus to be tempted

  84. but not be overcome by it

  85. he is the second Adam who came to save us from the sin

  86. which originated with Adam and Eve in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  87. and the second thing that we need to remember is that Jesus is both fully God and fully man

  88. this passage is not here so that we can know how to face our temptations today

  89. but this passage is here to show us the perfect obedience of the Son of God

  90. in this passage Jesus God in the flesh is tempted

  91. and his allegiance to God the Father

  92. and his obedience to the will of the Father is put to the test

  93. but he did what we never could

  94. he remained obedient

  95. this is an important message

  96. because if Jesus did not stand firm

  97. in his obedience to the will of the Father

  98. then forgiveness through the death of Jesus

  99. would not be possible for anyone today

  100. if Jesus would have sinned

  101. then he could not be our great high priest

  102. or the sacrificial lamb

  103. who takes away the sins of the world

  104. so please keep Luke chapter 4 open in front of you

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  105. and follow along with me in the passage

  106. as we see Jesus' perfect obedience to the Father

  107. so the first temptation that we see is in verse 3

  108. Jesus has just been baptized in the river Jordan

  109. in that wonderful scene

  110. where he identifies with mankind

  111. and God identifies Jesus as his Son

  112. so if you look over the page with me

  113. to Luke chapter 3 verse 22

    Luke 3:22

  114. God speaks and says about Jesus

  115. you are my Son

  116. with whom I love

  117. with you I am well pleased

  118. and it's from there

  119. that Jesus was led by the Spirit of God

  120. into the wilderness

  121. where he fasted for 40 days

  122. can you imagine

  123. how hungry

  124. and weak Jesus was at this point

  125. we have no idea

  126. the kind of hunger that Jesus must have felt

  127. he hasn't just

  128. skipped breakfast

  129. or skipped lunch

  130. so that his tummy would be rumbling a little bit

  131. he would be absolutely starving

  132. because no food has passed his lips

  133. for just under six weeks

  134. and so Satan takes the opportunity

  135. and comes in in verse 3

  136. and tempts Jesus by saying

  137. if you are the Son of God

  138. tell this stone to become bread

  139. if you're anything like me

  140. then you're already hungry after a few hours

  141. never mind 40 days

  142. and if I was in Jesus' position

  143. I wouldn't be tempted

  144. to turn a few stones into bread

  145. I'd be tempted to turn them

  146. into a whole bakery

  147. at first glance

  148. verse of verse 3

  149. we can think that Satan

  150. is trying to sow doubt

  151. in Jesus' mind

  152. of his identity

  153. it seems that Satan

  154. is contradicting

  155. what God has just said

  156. in chapter 3

  157. Satan says

  158. if you are the Son of God

  159. but a more accurate translation

  160. of the word if

  161. would actually be since

  162. and so the verse reads

  163. since you are the Son of God

  164. Satan is saying

  165. Jesus you are the Son of God

  166. you have rights

  167. you don't need to go hungry

  168. you have every right

  169. to change these stones into bread

  170. and look after yourself

  171. so if temptation

  172. is the appeal to do something

  173. that's morally wrong

  174. what's so wrong

  175. about Jesus

  176. turning rocks into bread

  177. later on in his ministry

  178. he would multiply bread

  179. and feed thousands of people

  180. but it's the heart behind it

  181. that would be wrong

  182. Satan isn't saying this

  183. out of a genuine concern

  184. for Jesus

  185. he is tempting Jesus

  186. with the subtle message

  187. Jesus you can do it yourself

  188. forget about God

  189. for a second

  190. you don't need God the Father

  191. you can do it yourself

  192. now we're not Jesus

  193. and we're not going to be tempted

  194. to turn stones to bread

  195. because that's impossible for us

  196. yet aren't we tempted

  197. to rely on our own strengths

  198. or to think that as Christians

  199. as children of God

  200. that we should be free

  201. from the pains

  202. and struggles

  203. of this life

  204. sin and temptation

  205. are constantly pulling

  206. at our thoughts

  207. constantly trying

  208. to distract us

  209. with the desires

  210. of the flesh

  211. constantly trying

  212. to draw our attention

  213. away from God

  214. from his goodness

  215. from his plan

  216. and instead focus

  217. on ourselves

  218. focus on our own means

  219. we're tempted to think

  220. that we can do it

  221. on our own

  222. to rely on our jobs

  223. our money

  224. our influence

  225. our social standing

  226. we're tempted

  227. to rely on everything else

  228. in this world

  229. but God

  230. but the reality is

  231. that we are called

  232. to live in accordance

  233. with the word of God

  234. to submit to

  235. and obey the Father

  236. so Satan was trying

  237. to trip Jesus up

  238. and get him

  239. to disobey the Father

  240. he wanted Jesus

  241. to take matters

  242. into his own hands

  243. but thankfully

  244. Jesus stood firm

  245. and he responds

  246. to Satan

  247. in verse 4

  248. read with me

  249. it is written

  250. man shall not live

  251. on bread alone

  252. now do you see

  253. how Jesus

  254. doesn't just say

  255. no and walk away

  256. but he resists

  257. the temptation

  258. by quoting

  259. from God's word

  260. and he does the same

  261. in all three temptations

  262. Jesus quotes here

  263. from Deuteronomy 8

    Deuteronomy 8:3

  264. verse 3

  265. which recounts

  266. the time

  267. when Israel

  268. was wandering

  269. in the wilderness

  270. for 40 years

  271. Israel's time

  272. of testing

  273. during those years

  274. how did the Israelites

  275. have food

  276. well the Lord

  277. miraculously

  278. and wonderfully

  279. provided for his people

  280. the Israelites

  281. didn't plant crops

  282. they didn't provide

  283. for themselves

  284. they needed to trust

  285. in the Lord God

  286. to trust in his provision

  287. because if God

  288. didn't provide

  289. then

  290. they were doomed

  291. to die

  292. of hunger

  293. in the wilderness

  294. so Jesus here

  295. is saying

  296. God is good

  297. God is faithful

  298. God will provide

  299. history proves it

  300. the Lord continues

  301. to provide

  302. physically

  303. for his people

  304. but he also

  305. provides spiritually

  306. through his word

  307. Satan's goal

  308. is to distract

  309. Jesus

  310. from his God

  311. ordained task

  312. on earth

  313. but Jesus resists

  314. by quoting scripture

  315. and trusting

  316. in God

  317. even when

  318. he is weak

  319. and hungry

  320. now it's important

  321. to note

  322. that even now

  323. in the midst

  324. of this temptation

  325. Jesus is fulfilling

  326. the will of God

  327. remember

  328. verse 1

  329. it was

  330. the spirit of God

  331. who led Jesus

  332. into the wilderness

  333. friends

  334. we need to know

  335. this

  336. we need to know

  337. that we can be

  338. walking in the

  339. perfect will

  340. of God

  341. walking obediently

  342. and trials

  343. and temptations

  344. will still come

  345. our way

  346. even in those

  347. times

  348. we are not

  349. immune to the

  350. attempts of Satan

  351. to draw our

  352. attention away

  353. from God

  354. and the goodness

  355. of the gospel

  356. and yet

  357. we know

  358. that he is a

  359. defeated

  360. foe

  361. and standing

  362. with us

  363. in our deepest

  364. in our darkest

  365. times of temptations

  366. is the Lord

  367. Jesus Christ

  368. who through

  369. his spirit

  370. enables us

  371. to deny

  372. ourselves

  373. and follow

  374. him

  375. obediently

  376. Satan

  377. will try

  378. to sow

  379. seeds

  380. of lies

  381. in your

  382. minds

  383. getting you

  384. to question

  385. God's goodness

  386. God's provision

  387. getting you

  388. to doubt

  389. God's good

  390. will

  391. and getting

  392. you to rely

  393. on your own

  394. means

  395. but they're

  396. all lies

  397. God

  398. from the

  399. very beginning

  400. of time

  401. has proven

  402. himself

  403. to be

  404. faithful

  405. trustworthy

  406. dependable

  407. God

  408. provided

  409. miraculously

  410. for his

  411. rebellious

  412. people

  413. in the

  414. wilderness

  415. for 40

  416. years

  417. and today

  418. we know

  419. that God

  420. provides

  421. because he

  422. has given

  423. us the

  424. greatest

  425. provision

  426. of all

  427. by sending

  428. his son

  429. to deal

  430. with the

  431. effect of

  432. Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  433. chapter 3

  434. Satan

  435. said to

  436. Adam and

  437. Eve

  438. take and

  439. eat

  440. and sin

  441. entered the

  442. world

  443. through their

  444. rebellion

  445. Satan

  446. said to

  447. Jesus

  448. take and

  449. eat

  450. and yet

  451. he stood

  452. firm

  453. trusting

  454. in our

  455. heavenly

  456. father

  457. but he

  458. did go

  459. on to

  460. taste

  461. poverty

  462. and death

  463. so that

  464. those words

  465. take and

  466. eat

  467. have now

  468. become

  469. symbols

  470. of our

  471. great

  472. salvation

  473. through

  474. his

  475. death

  476. and

  477. through

  478. his

  479. resurrection

  480. Jesus

  481. is the

  482. second

  483. Adam

  484. who

  485. stood

  486. firm

  487. in the

  488. face

  489. of

  490. temptation

  491. that

  492. is why

  493. the

  494. author

  495. of

  496. Hebrews

  497. can

  498. say

  499. in

  500. chapter

  501. 4

  502. verses

  503. 14

  504. to

  505. 15

  506. forward

  507. Jesus the son of God let us hold fast our confession for we do not have a high priest

  508. who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses but one who is able one who in every respect

  509. has been tempted as we are yet without sin friends when you are tempted take courage in the fact that

  510. your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ knows your struggle he has walked the path before you

  511. and he promises to be with you the second temptation is in verses 5 to 7 it says this

  512. follow along with me the devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the

  513. kingdoms of the world and he said to him I will give you all their authority and splendor it has

  514. been given to me so I and I can give it to anyone I want to Satan is tempting Jesus with power and

  515. authority and shows him all of the kingdoms of the world and offers all of their power and influence

  516. to him so you can imagine the scene Jesus can see all of the ancient equivalents of Washington DC

  517. New York London Brussels Tokyo Beijing Sydney Paris and all the other influential cities in our world today

  518. laid out before Jesus and Satan stands there with a grin on his face and says it's all yours Jesus

  519. it's all yours for the taking but there's a catch verse 7 Satan says if you worship me

  520. it will all be yours do you see Satan's devious plan he's trying to get the son of God the creator and

  521. sustainer of this world to bow down and worship him a created being Satan the lesser one is wanting

  522. Jesus to bow down to him but is this really something that Satan can offer Jesus has it all really been given

  523. to Satan we're tempted to think that is the case when we read passages like Ephesians chapter 2 verse 2

    Ephesians 2:2

  524. where Satan's described as the prince of the power of the air or passages like 1st John 5 19

  525. that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one but the reality is that Satan's at it again

  526. telling half truth sowing deceit and lies because there are plenty of passages in scripture that say that

  527. everything belongs to God he is the one who is in control for example just a few you've got Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  528. Ephesians 1 Colossians 2 there are plenty plenty more but Psalm 24 summarizes it so wonderfully

  529. the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof the world and all those who dwell therein for he has

  530. founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers Satan is spewing empty promises

  531. he could not follow through on what he's offering and so we might look at this and think well this really

  532. isn't a temptation at all is it Jesus being the son of God knows that everything belongs to God and so

  533. why would he even entertain this idea but this temptation is even greater than the first

  534. because Satan is tempting Jesus to have all the power all the authority that he deserves and is rightfully his

  535. without going to the cross

  536. Satan is saying Jesus you can have it all

  537. everything is at your fingertips without the pain

  538. without the suffering without the rejection and rebellion

  539. you can have it all without dying

  540. if you bow down and worship me

  541. Satan is offering Jesus a way out

  542. a path that doesn't lead to the cross a path

  543. that doesn't lead to him dying as an atoning sacrifice

  544. for the sins of the Lord's people Satan is offering Jesus an easy life

  545. and if we understand that then aren't we even more thankful that Jesus resisted temptation

  546. and didn't succumb to it because of his perfect obedience

  547. not only do we have a high priest who understands our struggles with temptation

  548. but we have a great high priest who deliberately went to the cross

  549. suffered was stricken smitten and afflicted

  550. so the sinful people like you and like me can be saved and brought back to God

  551. so Jesus responds to Satan's attempts in verse 8 read with me

  552. it is written Jesus said worship the Lord your God and serve him only

  553. Jesus is quoting from Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 13

    Deuteronomy 6:13

  554. a passage that speaks about the greatest commandment for the Lord's people to follow

  555. and yet a commandment that we fail to follow every single day

  556. but Jesus in his perfect obedience

  557. is able to resist the temptation to bow down and worship a created being

  558. now we're never going to be in this same position as Jesus

  559. to be tempted to bow down in order to gain power

  560. and authority of the whole world

  561. it's just not going to happen

  562. but aren't we tempted to forsake God

  563. and worship other things all the time

  564. it's so easy for us as Christians to take our eyes off of God

  565. and stop worshipping him and instead turn to material things

  566. lesser things, meaningless things

  567. we turn to money, fame, popularity, relationships, jobs, comfort

  568. good things in and of themselves

  569. but terrible things to worship

  570. John Calvin, a pastor and theologian from many years ago

  571. said that the human heart is an idol factory

  572. and we all know that to be true in our own lives, don't we?

  573. we are just as tempted to take the path that leads to comfort

  574. the path that leads to us being liked by everybody

  575. instead of standing firm in the truth of scripture

  576. and holding fast to our convictions

  577. friends, Jesus has not called you to comfort

  578. but he has called you to pick up your cross

  579. and follow him daily

  580. as Christians we will be mocked

  581. we will be tempted, we will be persecuted

  582. and we will suffer

  583. but let me encourage you that the eternal weight of glory

  584. that awaits those who persevere

  585. far, far outweighs any struggles that we face here on earth

  586. when you're tempted to take the easy way out

  587. remember

  588. that Jesus in perfect obedience

  589. chose the path which led to suffering and pain

  590. but the path that brought about our redemption

  591. the path that meant we went from being in darkness and death

  592. to being alive and in light

  593. therefore

  594. we can stand firm

  595. because he has gone before us

  596. because of the perfect obedience of the son of God

  597. to the will of the father

  598. we have a high priest

  599. who has been tempted in every way we have

  600. and yet is without sin

  601. which means that he is the sacrificial lamb

  602. to take away the sins of the world

  603. Jesus, thank you

  604. the third temptation is in verses 9 to 11

  605. follow along with me

  606. verses 9 to 11

  607. the devil led him to Jerusalem

  608. and had him stand on the highest point of the temple

  609. if you are the son of God

  610. he said

  611. throw yourself down from here

  612. for it is written

  613. he will command his angels concerning you

  614. to guard you carefully

  615. they will lift you up in their hands

  616. so that you will not strike your foot against a stone

  617. again

  618. Satan is appealing to Jesus' identity

  619. and saying

  620. since you are the son of God

  621. he is tempting Jesus to put God to the test

  622. saying

  623. because you are the son of God

  624. surely the father won't let any harm come to you

  625. prove it

  626. throw yourself off this temple

  627. and prove to the whole world

  628. who you are

  629. do you see how devious the devil is?

  630. he quotes from Psalm 91

  631. in an attempt to back up his claim

  632. that God will protect Jesus

  633. but this is why

  634. it is so important

  635. that we don't cherry pick

  636. Bible verses out of context

  637. or base our understanding on one verse

  638. because Satan's understanding

  639. of Psalm 91

  640. is absolutely atrocious

  641. Satan quotes from Psalm 91

  642. which speaks about the Lord's protection

  643. over his people

  644. how the Lord is a fortress

  645. and refuge for those

  646. who trust in him

  647. and in Luke chapter 4

    Luke 4:10

  648. verses 10 and 11

  649. Satan is quoting

  650. Psalm 91

    Psalms 91:11

  651. verses 11 and 12

  652. however

  653. he conveniently misses out

  654. Psalm 91 verse 13

    Psalms 91:13

  655. which says this

  656. you will tread on the lion

  657. and the adder

  658. the young lion

  659. and the serpent

  660. you will trample underfoot

  661. Satan is quoting from a psalm

  662. which tells about

  663. the Lord's strength

  664. for his people

  665. to overcome evil

  666. the devil's trying to distract

  667. Jesus from his mission

  668. to become the suffering servant

  669. and he's trying to get Jesus

  670. to test God's faithfulness

  671. Satan is twisting scripture

  672. and so Jesus responds

  673. with a quote from Deuteronomy 6

    Deuteronomy 6:6

  674. verse 6

  675. in verse 12

  676. read with me

  677. Jesus answered

  678. it is said

  679. do not put the Lord

  680. your God

  681. to the test

  682. Satan is telling Jesus

  683. that he doesn't have to suffer

  684. because God will protect him

  685. but Jesus knows

  686. that God's divine rescue

  687. only

  688. can only come through

  689. suffering

  690. and death

  691. but death will not have

  692. the final say

  693. friends

  694. we're never going to be

  695. in this same situation

  696. as Jesus

  697. but aren't we

  698. tempted to test God

  699. maybe it's

  700. that scripture is

  701. crystal clear

  702. on an issue

  703. and yet because

  704. we don't like it

  705. or because society

  706. doesn't

  707. doesn't sit well

  708. with them

  709. we're tempted

  710. to make wrong decisions

  711. we're tempted

  712. to deliberately

  713. go against

  714. God's word

  715. and yeah sure

  716. maybe we do say

  717. to God

  718. God I know

  719. this isn't

  720. perfect

  721. but if you help me

  722. through this

  723. I will give you

  724. all the glory

  725. I promise

  726. but the reality

  727. is that that's

  728. half-hearted obedience

  729. that's us

  730. putting our own

  731. will

  732. above God's

  733. and that's not

  734. us submitting

  735. to him

  736. or maybe you're

  737. not a Christian

  738. and you're listening

  739. in this morning

  740. maybe you've

  741. thought to yourself

  742. God if you give

  743. me a sign

  744. if you just

  745. do this

  746. or that

  747. then I promise

  748. you I'll believe

  749. in you

  750. but friends

  751. the Bible

  752. is enough

  753. no amount

  754. of signs

  755. can make this

  756. any more

  757. true

  758. the Bible

  759. is sufficient

  760. to know

  761. who God

  762. is

  763. and how

  764. to be made

  765. right with

  766. him

  767. that is all

  768. we need

  769. because it

  770. points us

  771. to our

  772. saviour

  773. Jesus

  774. as the

  775. perfect

  776. obedient

  777. one

  778. faced

  779. temptation

  780. that we

  781. couldn't even

  782. begin to

  783. imagine

  784. and yet

  785. every time

  786. he stood

  787. firm

  788. in the face

  789. of it

  790. because he

  791. knew that

  792. God's plan

  793. was good

  794. because

  795. God is

  796. good

  797. he knew

  798. that he

  799. needed to

  800. become

  801. the

  802. suffering

  803. servant

  804. and go

  805. to the

  806. cross

  807. the main

  808. point

  809. of this

  810. passage

  811. is

  812. Jesus

  813. perfect

  814. obedience

  815. it's not

  816. here to

  817. tell us

  818. about how

  819. we should

  820. fight against

  821. temptation

  822. but I

  823. think that

  824. that is a

  825. secondary

  826. application

  827. friends

  828. when we're

  829. faced with

  830. temptation

  831. we need

  832. to remember

  833. that Jesus

  834. was tempted

  835. and yet

  836. in his

  837. obedience

  838. he did

  839. not

  840. crumble

  841. but instead

  842. he used

  843. the word

  844. of God

  845. to defend

  846. himself

  847. one of

  848. the times

  849. we're most

  850. susceptible

  851. to temptation

  852. is when

  853. we're alone

  854. at home

  855. as many

  856. of us

  857. will be

  858. this week

  859. maybe the

  860. coming weeks

  861. let us

  862. dwell in

  863. the word

  864. of the

  865. Lord

  866. so that

  867. we can

  868. stand

  869. firm

  870. as we

  871. face

  872. temptations

  873. and let's

  874. live

  875. obedient

  876. lives

  877. we need

  878. to know

  879. scripture

  880. we need

  881. to have

  882. the word

  883. of God

  884. on our

  885. lips

  886. as our

  887. defense

  888. against

  889. the lies

  890. and

  891. attempts

  892. of Satan

  893. to distract

  894. us from

  895. God

  896. we cannot

  897. do this

  898. by our

  899. own

  900. strength

  901. but we

  902. must rely

  903. on the

  904. power

  905. and presence

  906. of the

  907. spirit

  908. of God

  909. to enable

  910. us

  911. to be

  912. obedient

  913. to the

  914. will

  915. of the

  916. father

  917. friends

  918. as we

  919. draw to

  920. a close

  921. think back

  922. to where

  923. we began

  924. with those

  925. children

  926. and that

  927. chocolate

  928. bar

  929. that just

  930. illustrates

  931. quite funnily

  932. but it just

  933. illustrates

  934. how easy

  935. we are to

  936. crumble

  937. in the face

  938. of temptation

  939. and yet

  940. knowing

  941. that Jesus

  942. went through

  943. temptation

  944. and stood

  945. firm

  946. should give

  947. us the

  948. confidence

  949. to live

  950. obediently

  951. to the

  952. will of

  953. God

  954. friends

  955. we need

  956. to be

  957. equipped

  958. to face

  959. temptation

  960. well

  961. we need

  962. to rely

  963. on Jesus

  964. and we

  965. need to

  966. give thanks

  967. that he

  968. did not

  969. succumb

  970. to temptation

  971. or to

  972. the schemes

  973. of the

  974. devil

  975. but instead

  976. he

  977. obediently

  978. went

  979. the way

  980. of the

  981. cross

  982. knowing

  983. that

  984. should

  985. give us

  986. confidence

  987. for us

  988. to take

  989. up our

  990. cross

  991. and follow

  992. him

  993. daily

  994. let's

  995. pray

  996. together

  997. heavenly

  998. father

  999. we thank

  1000. you so

  1001. much

  1002. for your

  1003. goodness

  1004. we thank

  1005. you for

  1006. your

  1007. faithfulness

  1008. we thank

  1009. you for

  1010. your love

  1011. and your

  1012. care

  1013. for your

  1014. people

  1015. father

  1016. forgive us

  1017. for the

  1018. times

  1019. when in

  1020. temptation

  1021. we doubt

  1022. you

  1023. forgive us

  1024. for the

  1025. times when

  1026. in temptation

  1027. we crumble

  1028. and we

  1029. forget to

  1030. live obedient

  1031. lives

  1032. but succumb

  1033. to our

  1034. temptations

  1035. father

  1036. would you

  1037. give us

  1038. strength

  1039. through the

  1040. enabling of

  1041. your holy

  1042. spirit to

  1043. stand firm

  1044. and jesus

  1045. we thank

  1046. you

  1047. that though

  1048. you were

  1049. tempted

  1050. in unbelievable

  1051. ways

  1052. you stood

  1053. firm

  1054. and obediently

  1055. went to the

  1056. cross which

  1057. means that

  1058. we can be

  1059. forgiven

  1060. jesus we

  1061. thank you so

  1062. much for the

  1063. great salvation

  1064. that you've

  1065. given to us

  1066. in jesus name

  1067. we pray

  1068. amen

  1069. and

  1070. please

  1071. you

  1072. your

  1073. sorry
