  1. Well, a very good morning, Brunsfield.

  2. It is wonderful to be part of your service this morning.

  3. I'm very sorry that we're not able to meet physically together,

  4. but I hope you're keeping well, and not just physically, but spiritually,

  5. and that God is really using this time to speak to you as a church,

  6. but also to you as individuals.

  7. So this time is going to be a time of transformation

  8. and a deepened devotion to Him and everything that happens.

  9. So we're going to be looking at this passage in Matthew 26,

    Matthew 26:36

  10. verse 36 and onwards.

  11. And if you have a Bible, I encourage you to have it open wherever you are,

  12. because we'll be looking at that together in a moment or two.

  13. But let me take you back first to 1945.

  14. On April 9th, the German pastor, Dietrich Bonhoeffer,

  15. who was associated with an attempt on taking Hitler's life,

  16. faced the gallows just outside of his prison cell

  17. in the Flossenberg concentration camp.

  18. Now, his famous last words are actually debated whether they are authentic or not,

  19. but they are quite impressive.

  20. He possibly could have said,

  21. this is not the end for me, as he faced his death,

  22. but it's the beginning of life.

  23. But even so, whether it was authentic or not,

  24. he certainly seemed, according to eyewitnesses,

  25. totally at peace and serene.

  26. And it's interesting that when you look up the different famous or lesser famous martyrs,

  27. that's often the description you find.

  28. Some even faced their death with utter joy.

  29. So how different when we read about Jesus' agony and sorrow

  30. and his pleading with the Father,

  31. how different the picture seems to be as Jesus faces his own death.

  32. Now, just to give you a little bit of context,

  33. it's nearly what we would call Good Friday,

  34. but the week has been tough.

  35. Ever since the triumphal entry,

  36. Jesus had opposition growing against him time and time again.

  37. He's also spent a lot of time with his disciples,

  38. trying to get as much teaching and training into them

  39. before it was time for him to die on the cross.

  40. And of course, the cross itself was looming larger and larger over that week.

  41. And events described here in our text describe Thursday night.

  42. Jesus had time with his disciples celebrating the Passover

  43. and actually giving it a completely new meaning,

  44. some of which will have only been fulfilled by Jesus' death on the cross

  45. and maybe only would have made sins afterwards to the disciples.

  46. But afterwards, we now find ourselves in a garden,

  47. very appropriately called Gethsemane,

  48. which meant the oil press,

  49. which may have been a hint to what lay ahead for Jesus

  50. as he would trod the wine press of the anger of his Father.

  51. One certainly can't help but think of another garden,

  52. the very first garden,

  53. which was the garden where the rebellion all began.

  54. But here in this second garden,

  55. it would lead to restoration,

  56. paradise restored,

  57. paradise made completely new.

  58. And Jesus came here to this garden to pray.

  59. And people, this morning, I want us to see three things

  60. as we look at this passage together.

  61. First, I want us to see what leads Jesus to pray

  62. and see how actually Christ's agony

  63. reveals to us Christ's love.

  64. for us.

  65. Secondly, we should also listen to what Jesus prays

  66. and very much see that Christ trusts the Father in his suffering.

  67. Thirdly, though,

  68. we must also see the lack of prayer of those who are with him

  69. and see how this passage also confronts us

  70. with how the disciples are found wanting.

  71. So let's first look at what led Jesus to pray.

  72. And I wonder if there's ever been a time

  73. where you have faced something

  74. very challenging,

  75. very scary, perhaps,

  76. maybe something very difficult.

  77. May have been an exam,

  78. maybe a driving test,

  79. your third or fourth attempt.

  80. But it might have been also an operation.

  81. Or maybe you've even faced death itself.

  82. Whatever it may have been,

  83. you know what it can be like

  84. and how it can really hit your stomach

  85. and it can give you sleepless nights.

  86. What we find in verse 37 and verse 38,

  87. the description that Jesus is becoming more

  88. and more sorrowful and troubled.

  89. It says,

  90. he says to them,

  91. my soul is overwhelmed with sorrow

  92. to the point of death.

  93. It's very much like how Psalm 42 puts it,

  94. how his soul seems to be downcast

  95. and disturbed within him.

  96. And it even leads him to pray to the Father,

  97. if it is at all possible,

  98. may this cup be taken from me.

  99. Now, let's not misunderstand Jesus.

  100. He's not having second thoughts.

  101. He's certainly not afraid of the abuse,

  102. the insults or the lashes

  103. which are going to confront him.

  104. It's something much deeper.

  105. The Greek here literally means

  106. astonished or amazed.

  107. Now, you may think this is impossible

  108. for an all-knowing and an all-powerful God

  109. to be astonished or amazed at anything.

  110. But people, it's the realization,

  111. it's the first experience

  112. that Jesus has of the horror

  113. of what lay ahead.

  114. As one commentator puts it,

  115. all Jesus can see right now

  116. before him is the evil,

  117. the wrath,

  118. the abyss,

  119. the chasm,

  120. the nothingness of the cup

  121. that he was about to drink,

  122. which meant exclusion from God

  123. and with that,

  124. the exclusion of his love

  125. and his light.

  126. And people,

  127. let's remember that this is

  128. really only a foretaste

  129. by Jesus' staggers.

  130. See, people,

  131. the cup

  132. is a reference

  133. to God's wrath.

  134. For example,

  135. Isaiah chapter 51,

    Isaiah 51:17

  136. verse 17

  137. tells us,

  138. Now,

  139. this notion of God

  140. being angry

  141. and God's wrath

  142. is not something

  143. that many of us like.

  144. It might be exactly

  145. the aversion you have

  146. to Christianity.

  147. See,

  148. I told you

  149. that Christian God

  150. is always angry.

  151. But part of our problem

  152. is seeing anger

  153. from a human perspective

  154. and in that sense

  155. from a human

  156. broken perspective.

  157. Where we see anger

  158. the way we've experienced

  159. it ourselves

  160. as something uncontrolled,

  161. explosive,

  162. often disproportionate

  163. and a violent reaction

  164. and very much

  165. the opposite of love.

  166. However,

  167. it is actually possible

  168. to be angry

  169. not as opposite of love

  170. but as part of love.

  171. Something I can get

  172. really angry about

  173. almost in a helpless way

  174. is abuse.

  175. You just have to open

  176. the pages of the newspaper

  177. and you'll find

  178. abuse of all kinds

  179. but particularly

  180. child abuse.

  181. And I guess

  182. it is motivated

  183. by love for me

  184. because as a father,

  185. as a parent myself,

  186. it's the last thing

  187. I would ever want

  188. to see happen

  189. to my very own children.

  190. And so similarly,

  191. God's love

  192. actually demands

  193. his anger at sin

  194. for him to ignore it

  195. or not to do anything

  196. about it

  197. would be unloving indeed.

  198. And Jesus

  199. would drink

  200. God's anger,

  201. his judgment,

  202. all due to our filth

  203. in our place.

  204. And to put it

  205. in other words,

  206. Jesus actually

  207. would experience

  208. the death

  209. that is due

  210. to sinners.

  211. And people,

  212. that's why

  213. on the one hand

  214. we should by all means

  215. fear death

  216. yet at the same time

  217. we don't have to.

  218. I remember growing up

  219. somebody saying,

  220. do you know

  221. that where Jesus

  222. hung on the cross

  223. is really where

  224. you should have

  225. been hanging?

  226. But I want to take it

  227. one step further

  228. because not only

  229. should we have hung

  230. where Christ hung

  231. on the cross,

  232. we should have also

  233. been where Christ

  234. was in the garden

  235. where we would have

  236. like Jesus

  237. been absolutely

  238. troubled

  239. by the sinfulness

  240. of man

  241. especially our own.

  242. Yet because Jesus

  243. came

  244. out of his very

  245. own free will

  246. and placed himself

  247. into this agony

  248. that he experienced

  249. in this garden

  250. our prayer

  251. can actually

  252. be different

  253. from Jesus' prayer.

  254. And so rather

  255. than praying

  256. to Father

  257. God

  258. if it is at all

  259. possible

  260. may this cup

  261. that we deserve

  262. pass from us

  263. we can actually

  264. pray to the Father

  265. and say thanks

  266. to your grace

  267. and your mercy

  268. this cup

  269. has passed

  270. to Jesus

  271. and I no longer

  272. have to fear

  273. death.

  274. And so people

  275. this is the love

  276. we want

  277. this is actually

  278. the love

  279. that we need

  280. it's a love

  281. that no one

  282. else can give us.

  283. It meant

  284. that the cup

  285. of judgment

  286. could become

  287. a cup of blessing

  288. which we still

  289. rejoice

  290. and celebrate

  291. today.

  292. It also means

  293. that we have

  294. a high priest

  295. who not only

  296. fully understands

  297. anything that we

  298. go through

  299. but also

  300. continues to pray

  301. for us today

  302. bringing each

  303. one of us

  304. before our

  305. Heavenly Father.

  306. Can I encourage you

  307. that if you do

  308. not yet know

  309. this love

  310. that you may

  311. today

  312. commit your

  313. heart and

  314. your life

  315. to this

  316. Jesus

  317. and may

  318. you trust

  319. in him

  320. and know

  321. his love

  322. in what we

  323. see here

  324. today

  325. for Jesus

  326. agony

  327. reveals

  328. Jesus

  329. love

  330. for us.

  331. Now secondly

  332. we also want

  333. to see

  334. that Christ

  335. trusts the

  336. Father

  337. in his

  338. suffering.

  339. Verse 39

  340. doesn't just

  341. tell us

  342. Jesus

  343. praying to

  344. the Father

  345. if it's

  346. possible

  347. may this

  348. cup pass

  349. from me

  350. but he also

  351. says yet

  352. not as I

  353. will

  354. but as

  355. you

  356. will.

  357. People may

  358. be very

  359. clear that

  360. Jesus does

  361. wrestle

  362. and yet

  363. he obeys.

  364. Sometimes

  365. we don't

  366. share that

  367. enough with

  368. one another

  369. but it's

  370. okay to

  371. wrestle

  372. to wrestle

  373. with the

  374. things in

  375. life that

  376. we find

  377. difficult

  378. or find

  379. hard to

  380. understand.

  381. Isn't that

  382. what most

  383. of the

  384. Psalms are

  385. about?

  386. People

  387. wrestling

  388. with God

  389. and yet

  390. the wrestling

  391. must always

  392. end with

  393. a submissive

  394. and a

  395. joyful

  396. obedience

  397. because this

  398. is exactly

  399. why Jesus

  400. prays not

  401. just to

  402. wrestle but

  403. also how

  404. he prays

  405. because Jesus

  406. as we'll

  407. see is

  408. when he

  409. prays he

  410. calls God

  411. his Father

  412. and it

  413. shows us

  414. so many

  415. things.

  416. Doesn't it

  417. remind us

  418. that Jesus

  419. knows exactly

  420. who he's

  421. talking to

  422. and isn't

  423. it also a

  424. reflection of

  425. their relationship

  426. and isn't

  427. Jesus knowing

  428. that God

  429. his Father

  430. is good

  431. and cares

  432. and is not

  433. only all

  434. powerful but

  435. also all

  436. wise

  437. and Jesus

  438. knows that

  439. he's loved

  440. hence he

  441. dares to

  442. say in

  443. pure

  444. submission

  445. not my

  446. will

  447. but yours

  448. that

  449. submission

  450. is even

  451. beautifully

  452. demonstrated

  453. by Jesus

  454. actually falling

  455. face down

  456. before the

  457. Father

  458. what a

  459. picture of

  460. humility

  461. and submission

  462. and that

  463. submission again

  464. is seen in

  465. the movement

  466. in his

  467. prayer

  468. where once

  469. he prayed

  470. if this

  471. cup could

  472. pass

  473. later on

  474. in verse

  475. 42

  476. he says

  477. but if

  478. it's not

  479. possible

  480. I'm ready

  481. people

  482. Jesus

  483. trust

  484. the

  485. Father

  486. in his

  487. suffering

  488. I wonder

  489. how we

  490. react

  491. when we

  492. face

  493. any

  494. challenges

  495. or any

  496. fear

  497. or any

  498. suffering

  499. I think

  500. a lot

  501. of us

  502. either try

  503. to run

  504. away

  505. we try

  506. to avoid

  507. discomfort

  508. at all

  509. means

  510. we maybe

  511. even put

  512. our head

  513. in the

  514. sand

  515. or we

  516. try to

  517. sort it

  518. out

  519. ourselves

  520. we place

  521. the trust

  522. in us

  523. and if

  524. we pray

  525. we don't

  526. necessarily

  527. wrestle

  528. in prayer

  529. we might

  530. just

  531. chuck it

  532. towards

  533. God

  534. and even

  535. if we

  536. wrestle

  537. we might

  538. only

  539. wrestle

  540. without

  541. the

  542. submission

  543. to follow

  544. in that

  545. sense

  546. I do

  547. wonder

  548. how much

  549. this virus

  550. and all

  551. the fear

  552. that many

  553. have

  554. experienced

  555. in the

  556. anxiety

  557. has it

  558. changed

  559. us at

  560. all

  561. I mean

  562. how easy

  563. do we

  564. find it

  565. today

  566. to truly

  567. pray

  568. not my

  569. will

  570. but yours

  571. but this

  572. people

  573. this trust

  574. that Jesus

  575. had

  576. is the

  577. trust

  578. that we

  579. need

  580. people

  581. we ought

  582. to be

  583. praying

  584. far more

  585. than we

  586. do

  587. and when

  588. we pray

  589. we must

  590. know

  591. that we're

  592. coming

  593. to our

  594. heavenly

  595. father

  596. who is

  597. good

  598. who is

  599. generous

  600. who longs

  601. to bless

  602. and works

  603. all things

  604. for the

  605. good

  606. of those

  607. who love

  608. him

  609. and people

  610. like

  611. Jesus

  612. we must

  613. also come

  614. in that

  615. submissive

  616. humility

  617. what I would

  618. consider true

  619. worship

  620. falling face

  621. down

  622. and in many

  623. ways isn't

  624. this what the

  625. Lord's prayer

  626. is all about

  627. you may have

  628. heard this

  629. suggestion already

  630. but the

  631. hand washing

  632. for 20

  633. seconds can

  634. be accompanied

  635. by singing

  636. happy birthday

  637. twice but

  638. it's also

  639. the time

  640. you can use

  641. much better

  642. by praying

  643. the Lord's

  644. prayer

  645. because there

  646. we pray

  647. just like

  648. Jesus

  649. our father

  650. and then

  651. we pray

  652. who art

  653. in heaven

  654. and then

  655. we worship

  656. him and say

  657. hallowed be

  658. your name

  659. that is like

  660. coming to

  661. him face

  662. down to

  663. before him

  664. and then

  665. we say

  666. your kingdom

  667. come and

  668. then

  669. exactly

  670. your will

  671. be done

  672. on earth

  673. in my

  674. life

  675. as it is

  676. in heaven

  677. people will

  678. we like

  679. Jesus

  680. trust the

  681. father

  682. in our

  683. suffering

  684. but thirdly

  685. sadly we do

  686. find a real

  687. contrast

  688. to Christ's

  689. prayerfulness

  690. in the

  691. disciples

  692. prayerlessness

  693. verse 40

  694. and verse 41

  695. tells us that

  696. Jesus returns

  697. to the disciples

  698. and finds them

  699. sleeping

  700. and he says

  701. could you men

  702. not keep

  703. watch with

  704. me for

  705. one hour

  706. he asked

  707. Peter

  708. watch and

  709. pray

  710. so that you

  711. will not

  712. fall into

  713. temptation

  714. for the

  715. spirit is

  716. willing

  717. but the

  718. body

  719. is weak

  720. I found

  721. it quite

  722. tempting

  723. to nearly

  724. overlook

  725. this

  726. or certainly

  727. underestimate

  728. its importance

  729. I mean we

  730. can make

  731. excuses

  732. can't we

  733. for the

  734. disciples

  735. it's late

  736. the middle

  737. of the night

  738. it's been

  739. an intense

  740. week

  741. I mean

  742. wouldn't

  743. you

  744. have

  745. fallen

  746. asleep

  747. yourself

  748. of course

  749. it's sad

  750. that they

  751. weren't

  752. more supportive

  753. but if you're

  754. anything like

  755. me I start

  756. yawning from

  757. about 930

  758. onwards

  759. I remember

  760. in my college

  761. days somebody

  762. had organized

  763. an all night

  764. prayer meeting

  765. boy did I

  766. struggle

  767. through that

  768. indeed

  769. and yet people

  770. in the context

  771. it's very clear

  772. that the

  773. disciples

  774. sleepiness

  775. is understood

  776. first of all

  777. as disobedience

  778. disobedience

  779. to Christ's

  780. call to

  781. watch

  782. and later

  783. to watch

  784. and pray

  785. I even

  786. wonder if

  787. it's the

  788. initial form

  789. of denial

  790. that Jesus

  791. predicted

  792. not only

  793. Peter but

  794. also his

  795. disciples

  796. to be

  797. guilty of

  798. later

  799. Matthew

  800. particularly

  801. mentions that

  802. it happened

  803. three times

  804. that they

  805. fell asleep

  806. and so even

  807. though there's

  808. no crow

  809. remember Peter

  810. had just said

  811. to Jesus

  812. I will never

  813. leave you

  814. nor forsake

  815. you

  816. but here's

  817. the beginning

  818. of him

  819. already

  820. starting to

  821. give in

  822. and give up

  823. and deny

  824. his very

  825. savior

  826. his lord

  827. but Jesus

  828. also points

  829. out that it's

  830. not just

  831. disobedience

  832. it's not

  833. just some

  834. form of

  835. denial

  836. it's actually

  837. that prayerlessness

  838. is actually

  839. dangerous

  840. he is calling

  841. to watch

  842. and pray

  843. so that they

  844. will not

  845. fall into

  846. temptation

  847. well what

  848. temptation

  849. may this

  850. be

  851. it's

  852. probably the

  853. temptation

  854. of

  855. unfaithfulness

  856. the disciples

  857. are found

  858. wanting

  859. and people

  860. I do wonder

  861. how the church

  862. compares

  863. to them

  864. how we

  865. compare

  866. for we

  867. like the

  868. disciples

  869. have also

  870. been called

  871. to watch

  872. and pray

  873. and it's

  874. interesting

  875. that in

  876. 1st Peter

  877. chapter 5

  878. verse 6

  879. through 8

  880. and I wonder

  881. if Peter

  882. might have

  883. even thought

  884. back of that

  885. moment in

  886. Gethsemane

  887. he writes

  888. humble yourselves

  889. therefore under

  890. God's mighty

  891. hand

  892. that he

  893. may lift

  894. you up

  895. in due

  896. time

  897. cast all

  898. your cares

  899. on him

  900. because he

  901. cares for

  902. you

  903. be self-controlled

  904. and alert

  905. your enemy

  906. the devil

  907. prowls around

  908. like a roaring

  909. lion

  910. people how often

  911. do we find

  912. that combination

  913. of watching

  914. and praying

  915. of being alert

  916. because of the

  917. devil our enemy

  918. again in

  919. Ephesians chapter 6

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  920. it reads

  921. and pray in the

  922. spirit on all

  923. occasions

  924. keep alert

  925. and always

  926. keep on

  927. praying

  928. one commentator

  929. says no

  930. prayer

  931. no power

  932. people not

  933. only is

  934. prayer the

  935. secret to

  936. faithfulness

  937. and fruitfulness

  938. in our life

  939. to God

  940. but it's also

  941. the defense

  942. people insufficient

  943. prayer and a

  944. prayerless frame

  945. of mind

  946. if we're not

  947. vigilant

  948. we will be

  949. ensnared

  950. also

  951. by

  952. temptation

  953. and into

  954. temptation

  955. people were

  956. told that

  957. Jesus

  958. his

  959. Jesus Christ

  960. his soul

  961. was heavy

  962. and the

  963. disciples eyes

  964. were heavy

  965. but people

  966. even if our

  967. eyes are heavy

  968. actually

  969. exactly because

  970. our eyes are

  971. heavy

  972. we must

  973. watch

  974. and pray

  975. there is too

  976. much

  977. at stake

  978. I guess

  979. part of the

  980. problem

  981. their problem

  982. as well as

  983. our problem

  984. was just

  985. simple

  986. incomprehension

  987. of all that

  988. was going

  989. on

  990. not fully

  991. realizing

  992. what Jesus

  993. was about

  994. to do

  995. they hadn't

  996. fully grasped

  997. the love

  998. of Christ

  999. which was

  1000. on display

  1001. now the

  1002. tiredness

  1003. wouldn't

  1004. have helped

  1005. but all

  1006. this

  1007. incomprehension

  1008. even of

  1009. what was

  1010. at stake

  1011. would not

  1012. have helped

  1013. them

  1014. in their

  1015. lack

  1016. in trust

  1017. in the

  1018. good father

  1019. so people

  1020. may

  1021. this

  1022. scene

  1023. and the

  1024. agony

  1025. that Jesus

  1026. went through

  1027. for us

  1028. be a great

  1029. reminder

  1030. not only of

  1031. the great

  1032. love that

  1033. Christ had

  1034. for us

  1035. that even

  1036. though

  1037. he had

  1038. a picture

  1039. of what

  1040. he was

  1041. still to

  1042. go through

  1043. and he

  1044. went through

  1045. with it

  1046. and for

  1047. it for

  1048. us

  1049. may it

  1050. also

  1051. encourage

  1052. and challenge

  1053. each one

  1054. of us

  1055. to like

  1056. him

  1057. put our

  1058. trust

  1059. fully in

  1060. the father

  1061. whatever we

  1062. may be

  1063. suffering

  1064. today

  1065. and ultimately

  1066. may we

  1067. always be

  1068. watching and

  1069. praying

  1070. like Jesus

  1071. it's so

  1072. encouraging to

  1073. see that

  1074. that even

  1075. when the

  1076. disciples fail

  1077. Jesus

  1078. Jesus doesn't

  1079. fail the

  1080. father

  1081. how wonderful

  1082. to see the

  1083. depth the

  1084. height the

  1085. width and

  1086. the length

  1087. of the

  1088. love of

  1089. God even

  1090. before we

  1091. get to

  1092. the cross

  1093. may it

  1094. encourage you

  1095. may it

  1096. challenge you

  1097. and change

  1098. you forever

  1099. let me pray

  1100. with you

  1101. just now

  1102. heavenly

  1103. father we

  1104. thank you

  1105. again for

  1106. your word

  1107. we thank

  1108. you that

  1109. it's

  1110. relevant

  1111. thank you

  1112. that it

  1113. can speak

  1114. right into

  1115. our situation

  1116. in 2020

  1117. but thank

  1118. you lord

  1119. that you've

  1120. taken us

  1121. back this

  1122. morning to

  1123. that moment

  1124. in which

  1125. Jesus Christ

  1126. saw the

  1127. death which

  1128. really we

  1129. as sinners

  1130. are due

  1131. thank you

  1132. that you

  1133. put your

  1134. trust in

  1135. the father

  1136. and said

  1137. not my

  1138. will but

  1139. yours

  1140. and so

  1141. you willingly

  1142. took your

  1143. place on the

  1144. cross for

  1145. each one of

  1146. us

  1147. we thank you

  1148. for that

  1149. great love

  1150. and we ask

  1151. you to help

  1152. us now

  1153. to put our

  1154. trust in

  1155. the father

  1156. also just

  1157. like you

  1158. and to be

  1159. a church

  1160. and to be

  1161. a people

  1162. who watch

  1163. and pray

  1164. so that we

  1165. will not fall

  1166. into that

  1167. temptation

  1168. of unfaithfulness

  1169. for your

  1170. glory

  1171. in Jesus

  1172. name

  1173. amen
