  1. Well, good morning, everyone. My name is Graham. I'm the pastor here at the church,

  2. and it's a real joy to welcome you to our Easter Sunday service, the day that Christians around

  3. the world and down the ages know and celebrate as being the greatest day in history. Now,

  4. you might be wondering why on earth would somebody think that? Well, why don't you grab a Bible and

  5. come with me to the Gospel of John and to chapter 20. This is where we're going to be this morning.

  6. John chapter 20. And as you're turning there, let me read to you some lyrics taken from one of the

    John 20 chapter mention

  7. best-selling songs that was on one of the best-selling albums that came out in the UK in 2005.

  8. And see if you recognize the song. The lyrics go like this. When the tears come streaming down your

  9. face, when you lose something that you can't replace, when you love someone,

  10. but it goes to waste. Could it be worse? Fix You by Coldplay. 1.25 million people in the UK

  11. apparently bought that single when it first came out. Many more bought the album as well.

  12. 1.25 million people. That's a lot of people. Which tells you something, doesn't it, about something of the song.

  13. 1.25 million people. That it was resonating deep within human hearts. Let me just ask you as you

  14. maybe think on that today. When was the last time that tears came streaming down your face?

  15. We cry for all sorts of reasons, don't we, as human beings? The person who cries tears of

  16. jubilation when their team have just won the Premier League. The child who cries tears of pain when they

  17. fall off their bike. The parent who cries tears of joy when they have just witnessed the birth of

  18. their first child. There's all sorts of reasons that we cry in life.

  19. but I guess the thing to see is that that song is talking about another type of tears isn't it

  20. you know rumor has it that Chris Martin wrote that song to help his wife at the time Gwyneth

  21. Paltrow process the death of her father and we know that to be true don't we that's a pain that

  22. we all know in our own lives and I imagine it's a pain that that many people around our world at the

  23. minute know for themselves right now and maybe it's a pain that you know in your life even as you watch

  24. this the tears that we shed when death so cruelly takes from us somebody that we love and we're left

  25. with that feeling deep down in our souls that this isn't the way it was supposed to be

  26. now whoever you are here today wherever this video catches you whatever you believe about this God

  27. the God of the Bible let me just pitch you a question one question to take us through the sermon today

  28. and it's in those moments where do you run

  29. where do you go as the tears come streaming down your face you see the thing is about

  30. the original Easter Sunday just as we tap into John chapter 20 today the curtain opens on this

    John 20 chapter mention

  31. chapter the first Easter Sunday morning and you see how we see a woman who's crying her eyes out

  32. in fact you might notice we're told four times if you've got your Bibles there four times in

  33. these verses that this lady is weeping she's heartbroken she's distraught she's confused

  34. she's inconsolable here is Mary Magdalene now Magdalene's not her surname okay Magdala is the

  35. name of the little fishing village where it's most likely she comes from so Mary Magdalene's kind of

  36. like her nickname the one that the disciples gave her to differentiate her from the other Marys who were on

  37. the scene Mary Magdalene there's all sorts of trashy rumor mill stories that are circulating even

  38. today about Mary Magdalene we don't know an awful lot about her and her past but there's one thing we

  39. know about her past and it's the fact that she has a very troubled past you see when we first meet this

  40. woman in the gospels we're told that demons previously tormented her now whatever that means

  41. what we can say is that she was a really poor soul right she was a really troubled soul

  42. there was no glittering career prospects ahead for Mary there was no Mr. Darcy coming over the hill to

  43. pick her up to take her to the prom there's no provision of a health care system that's going to

  44. help her in her time of need there's no knight in shining armor who's coming over the hill who can

  45. make things better for Mary that's what she doesn't have but you know what she probably does have she

  46. probably does have people in her village thinking that she's the crazy lady every time they see her

  47. crossing the road

  48. and while the world turned away from Mary from Magdala

  49. in her life Jesus turned toward her in compassion and love

  50. while the world walked by Jesus reached out and he lifted this woman up he freed Mary from her demons

  51. and he forgave Mary of her sin Jesus gave Mary life

  52. and flowing from that deep sense of gratitude and love deep within her heart Mary joins the

  53. the close circle of disciples who traveled with Jesus on his long journeys and so as we come to

  54. John 20 Mary Magdalene here's what we need to take in about what she's seen

  55. she's seen Jesus triumphantly enter Jerusalem on Palm Sunday she's standing there by the cross as he's

  56. crucified on Good Friday she witnesses his body being taken down and placed in a tomb and she sees the

  57. stone that's rolled in front of it and to compound her misery

  58. she goes to the tomb early on Sunday morning and that same stone

  59. has been rolled away

  60. now what Mary probably thinks has happened is that a band of grave robbers have been and gone

  61. not uncommon in this day for people to try and rob tombs to try and get the clothes off the body

  62. to make a really quick buck

  63. so here's Mary and this is where we kick into our verses today at verse 11

  64. right it's early on the first Easter Sunday Mary's outside the tomb

  65. and she's bawling her eyes out do you see how she's right there in those cold play lyrics

  66. truly she has lost somebody who she can't replace this is her this is where she is

  67. and she looks into the tomb and there's two angels inside now notice in the text that they are at either

  68. end of where Jesus's body was now given that on the Friday Jesus is crucified with two men on either

  69. side of him as he dies on a cross maybe we get a little taste here of what's going on

  70. as God the Father is vindicating the work of his son on the cross

  71. but Mary sees these angels they ask her why she is crying they've taken my Lord she says

  72. and she turns around and she sees the risen Jesus in his resurrection body

  73. and it seems that she doesn't recognize his face

  74. and verse 15 Jesus asks her do you see it why are you weeping

  75. who is it that you are looking for

  76. now here's the thing is if you pause and think about it the thing about those questions

  77. it's not as if Jesus doesn't know the answer

  78. oh it was me you're looking for oh why didn't you just say

  79. he knows the answers to these questions

  80. so what's going on

  81. well here is Jesus lovingly drawing out Mary's heart here

  82. and allowing her in this moment to see the earth

  83. shattering significance of this moment

  84. she doesn't recognize him here's what I love

  85. what does she think who does she think he is

  86. she thinks he is the gardener

  87. which I always think is quite funny

  88. right I wonder if if Jesus was carrying a pitchfork and wearing a John Deere tractor sweatshirt

  89. I doubt it

  90. on one level maybe so wrong why would she think this

  91. and why would it be recorded but on another level

  92. whether she meant this or not

  93. what she thought was so utterly profound

  94. you see the Bible story begins in a garden

  95. it's a garden full of abundance and goodness

  96. it's a beautiful place which tells us

  97. everything that we need to know about the God who created it

  98. God put Adam and Eve there to work it

  99. to enjoy it

  100. to develop it and to steward it

  101. for his glory

  102. all the while living in that perfect relationship with their creator

  103. things are great

  104. in fact the things are more than great

  105. they are very good

  106. and God gives them one rule

  107. he says don't eat from that tree

  108. and yet the bully

  109. the Adam and Eve buy the lie of Satan

  110. and they do

  111. and chaos reigns

  112. as sin enters the human condition

  113. sin

  114. spreads to every human heart

  115. sin

  116. is more than just bad behavior

  117. the things that you and I

  118. do and don't do all the time

  119. is deeper than that

  120. it's an inner disposition

  121. that we all have

  122. that wants to reject God

  123. doesn't love him

  124. doesn't honor him

  125. as he deserves to be loved and honored

  126. and instead forces our own way

  127. and our sin

  128. it offends God

  129. and it's separated us from him

  130. and it's left us deserving to be

  131. on the wrong end of his righteous judgment

  132. our sin

  133. humanity's sin

  134. has put us

  135. out of the garden

  136. separated from God

  137. away from him

  138. that's mankind's predicament

  139. outwith

  140. faith

  141. in the person

  142. and in the work

  143. of Jesus

  144. and yet here in John 20

  145. what is Mary

  146. thinking

  147. what is going on

  148. the dots are being joined

  149. Mary

  150. maybe identifying

  151. Jesus

  152. as the one

  153. who is making a way

  154. for there to be

  155. as it were

  156. a new garden

  157. where we can know

  158. God's presence

  159. through his

  160. work

  161. knowing the

  162. peace

  163. of being right

  164. with our creator

  165. basking in the joy

  166. of fully knowing him

  167. as we were designed

  168. to know him

  169. you see

  170. Adam's life

  171. brought death

  172. and guilt

  173. for us

  174. Jesus' death

  175. paid the penalty

  176. for our sin

  177. and brought us

  178. life

  179. and forgiveness

  180. and so as he rises

  181. and as God

  182. installs him

  183. as heaven's king

  184. the one to whom

  185. all

  186. knees will one day bow

  187. so the sun rises

  188. on a brand new world

  189. where all those

  190. who in faith

  191. would take

  192. this Jesus

  193. to be their savior

  194. and their king

  195. would know life

  196. eternal

  197. with this great

  198. God

  199. yes now

  200. but gloriously

  201. fully one day

  202. in this new creation

  203. and in that sense

  204. Mary's

  205. bang on the money

  206. Jesus is

  207. the gardener

  208. par excellence

  209. and so it's time

  210. for Jesus

  211. to reveal himself

  212. to Mary

  213. and let me just draw

  214. out in the remaining

  215. time we have left

  216. three quick things

  217. from these verses

  218. which I hope

  219. encourage your heart

  220. no end

  221. this Easter Sunday

  222. and so here's the first

  223. of these

  224. firstly

  225. notice how

  226. Jesus calls

  227. Mary out

  228. and I love this

  229. this is wonderful

  230. see what Jesus

  231. calls

  232. her

  233. do you see

  234. how Jesus

  235. doesn't go casual

  236. he doesn't say

  237. hey

  238. oi

  239. look

  240. he doesn't go

  241. generic

  242. he doesn't say

  243. woman

  244. he goes

  245. personal

  246. you see it

  247. goes personal

  248. Mary

  249. he uses

  250. her name

  251. so

  252. lovely in life

  253. isn't it

  254. when people

  255. use our names

  256. like in Starbucks

  257. when they

  258. take your order

  259. and they write

  260. your name

  261. on the side

  262. of the cup

  263. seeking to add

  264. just that little

  265. personal touch

  266. to it

  267. and I've had

  268. all sorts of

  269. weird and wonderful

  270. spellings with

  271. Graham

  272. down the years

  273. let me tell you

  274. one time

  275. it just said

  276. on the cup

  277. G-R-I-M

  278. Grim

  279. which if I'm honest

  280. perfectly

  281. captured my mood

  282. that day

  283. but they write

  284. your name

  285. on the cup

  286. but as nice

  287. as it is

  288. they don't know

  289. you

  290. they don't know

  291. me

  292. no that's true

  293. in life isn't it

  294. just because

  295. somebody uses

  296. your name

  297. doesn't mean

  298. that they know

  299. you

  300. but that is

  301. not the case

  302. with Jesus

  303. what's going

  304. on here

  305. here is the

  306. good shepherd

  307. in action

  308. John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  309. Jesus called

  310. himself

  311. the good

  312. shepherd

  313. here he is

  314. how is he

  315. the good shepherd

  316. well he knows

  317. and he calls

  318. his sheep

  319. each

  320. individually

  321. by their

  322. name

  323. and so

  324. contained in

  325. this one

  326. word

  327. is Jesus

  328. saying

  329. Mary my

  330. child

  331. I'm here

  332. take heart

  333. be comforted

  334. know that I

  335. hold your

  336. life in

  337. my hands

  338. you see that

  339. is the kind

  340. of relationship

  341. that Jesus

  342. has with

  343. his people

  344. he calls

  345. us by name

  346. and we

  347. respond to

  348. his voice

  349. we know

  350. his voice

  351. in our

  352. lives

  353. do you

  354. notice

  355. that while

  356. Mary doesn't

  357. recognize his

  358. face

  359. she knows

  360. his voice

  361. here is the

  362. good shepherd

  363. calling to

  364. one of his

  365. sheep

  366. and saying

  367. I'm here

  368. and friends

  369. you and I can

  370. know his voice

  371. today as we

  372. open the pages

  373. of our

  374. Bibles

  375. and I

  376. wonder if

  377. some of

  378. us need

  379. to take

  380. great comfort

  381. from that

  382. truth

  383. this Easter

  384. Sunday

  385. Jesus

  386. calls

  387. her out

  388. secondly

  389. notice very

  390. quickly that

  391. Jesus welcomes

  392. her in

  393. you see her

  394. life might

  395. in many ways

  396. look insignificant

  397. but Jesus

  398. wants her to

  399. grasp the

  400. truth that

  401. because of

  402. him

  403. she is now

  404. part of

  405. something truly

  406. magnificent

  407. verse 17

  408. and notice

  409. in this little

  410. section and

  411. what Jesus

  412. says here

  413. notice the

  414. vertical and

  415. the horizontal

  416. dimensions to

  417. what he's

  418. saying

  419. because Jesus

  420. explains to her

  421. doesn't he that

  422. he's going to

  423. ascend and hear

  424. the language in

  425. his voice he's

  426. going to ascend

  427. to his father

  428. and her

  429. father

  430. he's going to

  431. ascend to his

  432. God and

  433. her God

  434. and so Mary

  435. who was once a

  436. stranger to

  437. God

  438. because of

  439. her sin

  440. because of

  441. what Jesus

  442. has done on

  443. the cross

  444. for her

  445. is now

  446. beckoned to

  447. come and

  448. know this

  449. wonderful

  450. privilege of

  451. knowing her

  452. creator God

  453. as her

  454. father

  455. in the same

  456. way that

  457. Jesus knows

  458. him as

  459. his father

  460. what an

  461. incredible

  462. blessing

  463. one that

  464. is the

  465. right of

  466. every single

  467. Christian

  468. the world

  469. over down

  470. the ages

  471. how dare we

  472. use this

  473. how dare we

  474. call God

  475. our father

  476. yes because

  477. of Jesus

  478. Christ and

  479. his work for

  480. us

  481. oh what a

  482. wonderful

  483. privilege and

  484. then you see

  485. Jesus telling

  486. her that she

  487. has to go

  488. tell his

  489. brothers

  490. Jesus'

  491. brothers

  492. there's a

  493. new family

  494. relationship

  495. being established

  496. here

  497. so Mary

  498. is now part

  499. of this

  500. new global

  501. family of

  502. faith

  503. as Jesus

  504. gathers for

  505. himself

  506. through the

  507. ages a

  508. people from

  509. all corners

  510. of the earth

  511. a people from

  512. all walks

  513. of life

  514. a people doing

  515. all sorts of

  516. different jobs

  517. a people with

  518. all sorts of

  519. different interests

  520. a people from

  521. all different

  522. generations

  523. a people from

  524. every tribe

  525. tongue and

  526. nation called

  527. to be Jesus'

  528. one church

  529. and who Jesus

  530. says brothers

  531. and sisters

  532. to incredible

  533. privileges

  534. Jesus calling

  535. his people out

  536. with the

  537. express purpose

  538. of living for

  539. and worshipping

  540. him and

  541. thirdly notice

  542. how Jesus

  543. sends Mary

  544. on

  545. you know

  546. there are many

  547. privileges in

  548. life

  549. Maggie who was

  550. on just a

  551. few moments

  552. ago

  553. I always remember

  554. got chosen last

  555. year to go and

  556. meet the queen

  557. at Buckingham

  558. Palace

  559. what an

  560. incredible

  561. privilege that

  562. is

  563. but even the

  564. greatest privilege

  565. is nothing

  566. compared to

  567. the one that

  568. is bestowed

  569. on Mary

  570. here

  571. as she

  572. becomes the

  573. first witness

  574. to the

  575. risen Jesus

  576. what an

  577. honor

  578. what a

  579. privilege

  580. and you have

  581. to say what a

  582. surprise in many

  583. ways that

  584. Mary would be

  585. the first

  586. witness

  587. but then again

  588. this is the

  589. God of the

  590. Bible

  591. he is the

  592. God who is in

  593. the business of

  594. lifting up

  595. the humble

  596. and casting

  597. down the

  598. proud

  599. the God

  600. who uses

  601. the weak

  602. and the

  603. seemingly

  604. insignificant

  605. things of

  606. this world

  607. to shame

  608. the strong

  609. and so the

  610. God who

  611. chose the

  612. shepherds to

  613. be the first

  614. messengers of

  615. the news about

  616. the birth of

  617. his son

  618. now chooses

  619. this Mary

  620. who if we're

  621. honest has not

  622. got a lot going

  623. for in many

  624. ways except a

  625. devoted and a

  626. loving heart

  627. to be the

  628. first herald

  629. about the

  630. news of his

  631. risen son

  632. and she

  633. runs and she

  634. proclaims the

  635. theme that has

  636. been the anthem

  637. of the church

  638. down the ages

  639. and the one

  640. which fuels

  641. Christian mission

  642. across the

  643. globe that

  644. Christ is

  645. risen

  646. he is risen

  647. indeed and

  648. that is great

  649. news

  650. that is the

  651. gospel that is

  652. that the the

  653. message that's at

  654. the heart of the

  655. Christian faith

  656. Jesus lived

  657. he died

  658. he rose

  659. and one day he

  660. will return

  661. the famous words

  662. of Christian

  663. missionary Jim

  664. Elliott

  665. he is no fool

  666. who gives what

  667. he cannot keep

  668. to gain that

  669. which he cannot

  670. lose

  671. and so here is

  672. Mary Magdalene

  673. and we don't know

  674. what happened to

  675. her after this

  676. point you go on

  677. Google you'll find

  678. all sorts of weird

  679. and wonderful

  680. attempts at it

  681. but the truth

  682. is we just

  683. don't know

  684. but what's

  685. almost for

  686. certain is

  687. that life

  688. wouldn't have

  689. been all

  690. rainbows and

  691. unicorns for

  692. Mary after this

  693. point I mean if

  694. you're carrying

  695. this message to

  696. a world about

  697. the guy who the

  698. world wanted

  699. dead it ain't

  700. gonna go well

  701. for you I'd

  702. imagine imagine

  703. that life for her

  704. would have been

  705. the same as it

  706. was for the

  707. other disciples

  708. who took the

  709. message of the

  710. risen Jesus to

  711. the world

  712. it's funny I

  713. was reminded of

  714. this the other

  715. night as I

  716. was reading

  717. do you know

  718. what I was

  719. reading I was

  720. reading where's

  721. Wally with my

  722. kids a lad but I

  723. was reading where's

  724. Wally on one of

  725. the pages she had

  726. to find Wally in

  727. the in the

  728. Coliseum in

  729. Rome so we're

  730. sitting there the

  731. three of us looking

  732. for him and the

  733. girls say to me

  734. daddy daddy what

  735. does it say at

  736. the top and I

  737. read to them the

  738. caption at the

  739. top and it

  740. simply read here

  741. in Rome are the

  742. Christians being

  743. thrown to the

  744. lions and so

  745. they they're off

  746. they're trying to

  747. look for Wally

  748. they're trying to

  749. look for the

  750. wizard and I'm

  751. struck by that

  752. comment and I'm

  753. led to think of

  754. the first disciples

  755. I'm led to think of

  756. my brothers and

  757. sisters who first

  758. carried the torch

  759. for Christ because

  760. that was the reality

  761. for those who

  762. follow Jesus sure

  763. that would have

  764. been the reality

  765. for Mary but

  766. what's for certain

  767. is that Mary

  768. would have known

  769. pain in her life

  770. she would have

  771. known the loss of

  772. loved ones she

  773. would have known

  774. herself what it

  775. is like to feel

  776. that you are on

  777. your way out of

  778. this world that

  779. you are dying she

  780. would have died

  781. let me ask you

  782. where do you run

  783. in those moments

  784. when the tears

  785. come streaming

  786. down your face

  787. when you lose

  788. someone something

  789. thing you can't

  790. replace when you

  791. lose someone but

  792. it goes to waste

  793. what could be

  794. worse where do

  795. you go answer

  796. the invitation as

  797. we look at Mary

  798. here and as you

  799. look at the risen

  800. Jesus is we have

  801. got nowhere else to

  802. run but to the man

  803. who has defeated

  804. death and is alive

  805. forever more we

  806. are called to run

  807. to the risen

  808. Jesus Mary's

  809. saviour lives he

  810. lives you see

  811. Mary's not got

  812. hope Mary's got

  813. Christ and Christ

  814. is her living hope

  815. and because he

  816. died and because

  817. he now lives she

  818. one day too no

  819. matter what happens

  820. to her even though

  821. she dies will one

  822. day live with Jesus

  823. forever he is our

  824. living hope he is

  825. the hope of every

  826. single Christian

  827. down the ages in

  828. this world

  829. Jesus Christ

  830. crucified

  831. risen

  832. returning the one

  833. who we read at the

  834. end of the Bible is

  835. the one who will make

  836. all things new

  837. the one who will

  838. wipe away every

  839. tear the one who

  840. will banish death

  841. forever for we will

  842. be in God's perfect

  843. kingdom

  844. kingdom

  845. here is Jesus

  846. standing victorious

  847. having conquered the

  848. grave having atoned

  849. for our sin here is

  850. the lamb that was

  851. slain and here is

  852. the roaring lion of

  853. Judah who has

  854. defeated the power of

  855. sin and death

  856. and so even in our

  857. darkest moments and

  858. friends we don't know

  859. what's going to happen

  860. over the next few

  861. months but what we

  862. can know is that even

  863. in the shadow of the

  864. valley of death here

  865. is a shepherd who

  866. walks close with his

  867. people and here is a

  868. shepherd who has given

  869. his life so that his

  870. people could go free

  871. and here is a shepherd

  872. who even in our

  873. darkest moments invites

  874. us to come and put

  875. our faith in him and

  876. join in the chorus the

  877. one that's been the

  878. anthem of the church

  879. down the ages and with

  880. this we close it goes

  881. like this God sent

  882. his son they called

  883. him Jesus he came to

  884. love heal and forgive

  885. he lived and died to

  886. buy my pardon an empty

  887. grave is there to prove

  888. my savior lives because

  889. he lives I can face

  890. tomorrow because he

  891. lives all fear is gone

  892. because I know I know he

  893. holds the future and life

  894. is worth the living just

  895. because he lives let me

  896. pray for us as we close

  897. heavenly father we thank

  898. you so much for today and

  899. that even as we journey

  900. through the uncertainty of

  901. this life that as we look

  902. at the crucified risen and

  903. one day returning Jesus we

  904. can have hope and so

  905. father we ask that you

  906. would help us to look to

  907. him and have our eyes

  908. fixed on him father thank

  909. you that you love us and

  910. we pray these things in

  911. Jesus's precious and

  912. perfect name amen

  913. sight of him and

  914. three

  915. words point

  916. I

  917. think of

  918. him for

  919. me

  920. for

  921. long

  922. H
