  1. Good morning, my name is Jill and our reading today is taken from Psalm chapter 16 verses 1 to 8.

    Psalms 16:1–8

  2. Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.

  3. I say to the Lord, you are my Lord. Apart from you I have no good thing.

  4. I say of the holy people who are in the land, they are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.

  5. Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.

  6. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips.

  7. Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup, you make my lot secure.

  8. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places. Surely I have a delightful inheritance.

  9. I will praise the Lord who counsels me. Even at night my heart instructs me.

  10. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand I shall not be shaken. Amen.

  11. Good morning, my name is Alistair. Our second reading this morning comes from Acts chapter 17 verses 16 to 34.

    Acts 17:16–34

  12. While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols.

  13. So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks,

  14. as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there.

  15. A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him.

  16. Some of them asked, what is this babbler trying to say?

  17. Others remarked, he seems to be advocating foreign gods.

  18. They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.

  19. Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him,

  20. may we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting?

  21. You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears and we would like to know what they mean.

  22. All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.

  23. Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said,

  24. People of Athens, I see that in every way you are very religious.

  25. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship,

  26. I even found an altar with this inscription to an unknown God.

  27. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship.

  28. And this is what I am going to proclaim to you.

  29. The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth

  30. and does not live in temples built by human hands.

  31. And he is not served by human hands as if he needed anything.

  32. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.

  33. From one man he made all the nations that they should inhabit the whole earth.

  34. And he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.

  35. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him,

  36. though he is not far from any one of us.

  37. For in him we live and move and have our being.

  38. As some of your own poets have said, we are his offspring.

  39. Therefore, since we are God's offspring,

  40. we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone,

  41. an image made by human design and skill.

  42. In the past God overlooked such ignorance,

  43. but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

  44. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice

  45. by the man he has appointed.

  46. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.

  47. When they heard about the resurrection of the dead,

  48. some of them sneered, but others said,

  49. we want to hear you again on this subject.

  50. At that, Paul left the council.

  51. Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed.

  52. Among them was Dionysus, a member of the Areopagus,

  53. also a woman named Demaris, and a number of others.

  54. Amen.

  55. Thank you for God's word.

  56. So let's just pray for Alistair as he comes to speak to us

  57. on what we've just read this morning.

  58. Father God, we just thank you for your word.

  59. And we just pray for Alistair as he comes to share with us this morning.

  60. We pray that you are with him

  61. and that you can just help him to deliver what's on his heart.

  62. We just thank you for all of the work he's done

  63. in preparing your message.

  64. And we just pray for him now as he comes to speak to us.

  65. In Jesus' name.

  66. Amen.

  67. Good morning, everyone, and welcome to this service.

  68. Let me add my welcome to Graham's.

  69. My name is Alistair.

  70. I have the privilege of being the assistant pastor

  71. here at Brunsfield.

  72. And the privilege of leading us through

  73. that passage that was just read to us

  74. from Acts chapter 17, verses 16 to 34.

    Acts 17:16–34

  75. But to start off, I want you to imagine

  76. that you're on holiday in a new city,

  77. one of the cultural capitals of the world.

  78. It's probably a wonderful dream that many of us are having

  79. during this lockdown.

  80. But when you go on holiday,

  81. when you visit a large, prominent city,

  82. what is it that grabs your attention?

  83. Prior to my wife, Sabina, and I moving to Edinburgh,

  84. we lived in Vienna for a few years.

  85. And when we used to walk around,

  86. I would constantly be looking up.

  87. Because we were walking past buildings

  88. that were hundreds of years old.

  89. You'd look up and you would see intricate wreaths

  90. made of stone.

  91. And you would almost think that they were made

  92. of real leaves and flowers.

  93. And then you'd see sculptures and statues

  94. that were so lifelike.

  95. With every step, you couldn't help but be drawn

  96. into the beauty of the city.

  97. And on top of that, you'd walk past opera halls.

  98. You'd hear masterful artists playing their instruments.

  99. Talented opera singers belting out tunes

  100. in the middle of the city centre.

  101. And you'd walk past birthplaces of famous composers.

  102. And you couldn't help but marvel

  103. at the beauty of a city like that.

  104. Most of us are probably like this

  105. when we go and visit somewhere new.

  106. We walk around and the things that grab our attention

  107. are the architecture, the culture,

  108. the atmosphere of the city, right?

  109. Well, this morning we're going to go on a journey

  110. with the Apostle Paul back in time

  111. to the ancient city of Athens

  112. at the height of its cultural significance.

  113. It was a prominent city.

  114. A place where philosophers would gather

  115. and debate and discuss the newest ideas.

  116. An intellectual hub for the greatest minds

  117. of the ancient world.

  118. An ancient city filled with hustle and bustle.

  119. But we're going to focus on two things this morning.

  120. Firstly, what the Apostle Paul saw

  121. as he wandered around Athens.

  122. And then secondly, what he did because of that.

  123. So the first thing that we see in this passage

  124. is seeing the reality.

  125. In verses 16 to 21.

  126. Seeing the reality.

  127. So Paul, Silas and Timothy have just been in Berea.

  128. A town where the Jews listened to Paul's message.

  129. And they examined the scriptures every day

  130. to see whether what he was saying was right.

  131. And we see that from verse 11 in chapter 17.

  132. But then people from Thessalonica came

  133. and caused a riot and made trouble

  134. so that Paul had to leave.

  135. And he was taken to this city of Athens.

  136. A city that, as far as we know,

  137. he had never visited before.

  138. And he was to wait there

  139. until Silas and Timothy would join him.

  140. So what would you do

  141. if you had a few days to kill

  142. in a city you'd never been to before?

  143. Well, you'd go sightseeing.

  144. You'd go and check out the local hotspots.

  145. You'd try the local food.

  146. You'd look at the tourist attractions, right?

  147. If you go to Paris,

  148. you're going to try your hardest

  149. and bend over backwards almost

  150. to get the whole Eiffel Tower

  151. into your picture frame.

  152. 30 attempts later

  153. and 28 fake smiles

  154. and you finally get the picture you wanted.

  155. But what does Paul see

  156. as he walks around Athens?

  157. Well, look with me at verse 16.

  158. Paul's eyes aren't drawn to the architecture

  159. or to the culture

  160. or the sophistication

  161. or the philosophical significance

  162. of the people in Athens.

  163. His eyes are drawn to the idolatry

  164. and he is deeply, deeply distressed.

  165. Now, Sabina and I spent a few weeks

  166. in the Middle East last year

  167. and we visited a number of touristy hotspots

  168. in the area.

  169. We stood next to and took pictures

  170. of ourselves in the ancient temples

  171. of Zeus, of Hercules and of Diana,

  172. just to name a few.

  173. But one day as we were in

  174. one of these temples,

  175. we were talking about how

  176. thousands of years ago

  177. that place would have been

  178. heaving with worshippers

  179. and stalls of people

  180. selling small household gods,

  181. people selling false gods

  182. and false hope.

  183. And we were amazed

  184. at the absurdity

  185. and the evil

  186. of the idolatry

  187. that we were now standing next to

  188. and taking pictures of.

  189. But Paul wasn't standing

  190. in an empty city.

  191. He was walking through a city

  192. that was full of idols,

  193. a new idol around every corner.

  194. It's as if they were drowning

  195. in a ton of false deities.

  196. And this upset.

  197. It provoked

  198. and it compelled Paul

  199. to see the reality

  200. of the situation

  201. and to preach the gospel to them.

  202. Paul sees the idolatry

  203. in the city

  204. and he knows

  205. the deeper reality

  206. that it conveys.

  207. That these people

  208. are giving glory

  209. and honour

  210. to created things

  211. instead of to God,

  212. the creator.

  213. But we can't look at this

  214. and think that we're any different

  215. or that somehow

  216. our world has overcome

  217. this problem of idolatry.

  218. Sure, our idols look different

  219. but just take a wonder

  220. down Princess Street

  221. here in Edinburgh.

  222. Or look at the advertisements

  223. on television

  224. and you will see

  225. what the idols are

  226. that we worship today.

  227. Popularity,

  228. material wealth,

  229. a good reputation,

  230. having the perfect body,

  231. relationships,

  232. sex,

  233. being liked by everyone

  234. and so on.

  235. None of these

  236. are bad things

  237. in and of themselves

  238. but

  239. they are terrible gods.

  240. Terrible things

  241. to worship.

  242. We are no different

  243. from the city of Athens.

  244. As John Calvin,

  245. the pastor and theologian

  246. from many years ago

  247. once said,

  248. man's mind

  249. is a perpetual

  250. factory

  251. of idols.

  252. Idols are the things

  253. that we,

  254. that take up our time,

  255. that take up our energy,

  256. our money,

  257. our effort.

  258. The things that we

  259. prioritize

  260. over God.

  261. Do you want to know

  262. what your idols are?

  263. think about

  264. what you miss most

  265. during this lockdown.

  266. Think about

  267. what your mind

  268. is consumed with

  269. and what you give

  270. all of your time to.

  271. Idols

  272. are the things

  273. in our lives

  274. that take the place

  275. that should be reserved

  276. only for God.

  277. And so Paul

  278. sees this

  279. and he is compelled

  280. to speak

  281. and he reasons

  282. with the Jews

  283. in the synagogue

  284. and goes into

  285. the marketplace

  286. and in verse 18

  287. it says that he

  288. preached the good news

  289. about Jesus

  290. and the resurrection.

  291. So Paul sees

  292. the reality

  293. of idolatry

  294. and he is compelled

  295. to preach.

  296. Friends,

  297. how do we respond

  298. to idolatry?

  299. we are surrounded

  300. in a world

  301. that is trying

  302. to find satisfaction

  303. and fulfillment

  304. and meaning

  305. in things

  306. that won't deliver.

  307. We try to find

  308. satisfaction

  309. in our jobs,

  310. in our university

  311. grades,

  312. in our material

  313. possessions,

  314. in our marital status

  315. and many more things.

  316. but in reality

  317. that points

  318. to one truth

  319. that humans

  320. are born

  321. worshippers

  322. and we are

  323. naturally born

  324. worshipping

  325. the wrong things.

  326. We shouldn't

  327. be worshipping

  328. things that are

  329. gone in a flash,

  330. things that can break

  331. and things that

  332. don't satisfy.

  333. Friends,

  334. we should only

  335. be worshipping

  336. God

  337. and in the face

  338. of idolatry

  339. our response

  340. shouldn't be

  341. apathy.

  342. We shouldn't

  343. walk away

  344. and not care

  345. at what people

  346. are doing

  347. but we should

  348. point people

  349. to the only person

  350. who is worth

  351. worshipping,

  352. the person

  353. who created us

  354. to worship

  355. and glorify him

  356. and that is

  357. God alone.

  358. When we see

  359. idolatry

  360. we need to see

  361. the reality

  362. of it

  363. and it must

  364. lead us

  365. it must

  366. lead us

  367. to boldly

  368. proclaim

  369. Jesus

  370. to a world

  371. that is hardwired

  372. to worship.

  373. The second thing

  374. that we see

  375. in this passage

  376. is speaking

  377. the truth

  378. in verses 22

  379. to 34

  380. speaking

  381. the truth.

  382. So Paul

  383. has preached

  384. to the people

  385. of Athens

  386. and they called

  387. him a babbler.

  388. They accused

  389. him of advocating

  390. foreign gods

  391. in verse 18

  392. and he was

  393. told that he

  394. was promoting

  395. strange ideas

  396. in verse 20

  397. but this

  398. doesn't deter him.

  399. Paul is still

  400. deeply distressed

  401. by the idolatry

  402. that he sees

  403. and now he's

  404. brought before

  405. a council

  406. a group of

  407. prominent people

  408. who were

  409. responsible for

  410. the moral

  411. for the education

  412. and for the

  413. religious act

  414. of Athens

  415. and he's

  416. asked to

  417. explain

  418. his message

  419. and look

  420. where he

  421. begins

  422. in verse

  423. 22

  424. read with me

  425. people

  426. of Athens

  427. I see

  428. that in

  429. every way

  430. you are

  431. very religious

  432. for as I

  433. walked around

  434. and looked

  435. carefully

  436. at your

  437. objects

  438. of worship

  439. I even

  440. found an

  441. altar

  442. with this

  443. inscription

  444. to an

  445. unknown

  446. God

  447. so you

  448. are ignorant

  449. of the

  450. very thing

  451. you worship

  452. and that

  453. is what

  454. I am going

  455. to proclaim

  456. to you

  457. now in

  458. this verse

  459. Paul isn't

  460. approving

  461. of their

  462. polytheism

  463. their love

  464. for a

  465. plethora of

  466. idols

  467. he isn't

  468. saying this

  469. unknown God

  470. that you

  471. worship I'm

  472. going to

  473. tell you

  474. about him

  475. and he

  476. isn't saying

  477. that there

  478. are multiple

  479. ways to

  480. God

  481. he's pointing

  482. out the

  483. absurdity

  484. that they

  485. are worshipping

  486. something they

  487. have no idea

  488. about

  489. and he

  490. goes on to

  491. proclaim to

  492. them the

  493. one true

  494. God

  495. who is

  496. deserving

  497. of worship

  498. Paul

  499. draws out

  500. five wonderful

  501. truths about

  502. God that I

  503. hope will

  504. encourage us

  505. all as

  506. Christians this

  507. morning

  508. that will

  509. comfort us

  510. and lead us

  511. to worship

  512. our all

  513. powerful

  514. our almighty

  515. and our

  516. amazing God

  517. God

  518. and this

  519. should

  520. encourage us

  521. because Paul

  522. doesn't do

  523. anything special

  524. in this

  525. passage

  526. you don't

  527. require a

  528. PhD in

  529. theology to

  530. do what he

  531. does here

  532. Paul simply

  533. explains who

  534. God is

  535. and he calls

  536. the people of

  537. Athens to

  538. repent

  539. every single

  540. Christian can

  541. do that

  542. and I

  543. hope that if

  544. you're listening

  545. to this

  546. service this

  547. morning and

  548. you're not a

  549. Christian

  550. that these

  551. five truths

  552. about God

  553. will challenge

  554. you to

  555. consider who

  556. he really

  557. is

  558. God is not

  559. some distant

  560. far off deity

  561. or a fairy

  562. tale

  563. but he is the

  564. one true God

  565. and he alone

  566. is worthy

  567. of our

  568. praise

  569. and so we

  570. get our

  571. first truth

  572. about God

  573. in verse 24

  574. read with me

  575. the God who

  576. made the

  577. world and

  578. everything in

  579. it is the

  580. Lord of

  581. heaven and

  582. earth and

  583. does not

  584. live in

  585. temples built

  586. by human

  587. hands

  588. God is

  589. creator

  590. he is the

  591. all powerful

  592. one who put

  593. the stars in

  594. their place

  595. the one who

  596. created this

  597. wonderful world

  598. that we live

  599. in as Psalm

  600. 97 so

  601. wonderfully puts

  602. it the heavens

  603. proclaim his

  604. righteousness

  605. and all

  606. peoples see

  607. his glory

  608. everyone is

  609. without excuse

  610. because when we

  611. look at the

  612. skies when we

  613. see the ocean

  614. when we see

  615. the snow

  616. capped mountains

  617. and the

  618. wonderful creation

  619. that God has

  620. made there

  621. should be no

  622. doubt in our

  623. minds that

  624. there is a

  625. creator

  626. and we are

  627. called to

  628. worship him

  629. and as if

  630. that wasn't

  631. amazing enough

  632. verse 25

  633. continues and

  634. says God is

  635. the sustainer

  636. of life

  637. God gives

  638. everyone life

  639. and breath

  640. and everything

  641. else

  642. as you woke

  643. up this morning

  644. you probably

  645. rubbed your

  646. eyes

  647. gave a wee

  648. stretch

  649. probably a

  650. little yawn

  651. and started

  652. your day

  653. like every

  654. other day

  655. but every

  656. single thing

  657. you have

  658. everything that

  659. you are

  660. is a gift

  661. from God

  662. even the

  663. breath that

  664. you breathe

  665. is a gift

  666. from the God

  667. who created

  668. you and the

  669. God who

  670. sustains you

  671. as verse 28

  672. says for in

  673. him we live

  674. and move

  675. and have our

  676. being

  677. God is the

  678. sustainer

  679. of life

  680. and in

  681. verse 26

  682. we see that

  683. God is the

  684. ruler of

  685. the nations

  686. he knows

  687. the rise

  688. and fall

  689. of all the

  690. nations that

  691. span throughout

  692. history

  693. the nations

  694. that once

  695. were mighty

  696. and powerful

  697. attributed their

  698. success to

  699. military might

  700. but God is

  701. the one

  702. who has

  703. appointed their

  704. times

  705. their success

  706. should not lead

  707. them to rely

  708. on themselves

  709. or think of

  710. how great

  711. they are

  712. but as

  713. verse 27

  714. says God

  715. did this

  716. so that they

  717. would seek

  718. him and

  719. perhaps reach

  720. out for him

  721. and find him

  722. though he is

  723. not far from

  724. any of us

  725. do you see

  726. that wonderful

  727. that mind

  728. blowing and

  729. that comforting

  730. truth at the

  731. end of that

  732. verse

  733. God is not

  734. far from

  735. any one

  736. of us

  737. maybe you're

  738. struggling

  739. during this

  740. lockdown

  741. period

  742. maybe you're

  743. lonely

  744. maybe you're

  745. hurting and

  746. afraid

  747. friends the

  748. wonderful truth

  749. is that God

  750. is not far

  751. from you

  752. call out

  753. to him

  754. call on him

  755. maybe even

  756. for the first

  757. time

  758. and hear the

  759. voice of the

  760. one true

  761. loving God

  762. who calls you

  763. to himself

  764. and he promises

  765. to be with

  766. you all

  767. the time

  768. and then

  769. Paul goes

  770. even further

  771. and he

  772. presents the

  773. next truth

  774. about God

  775. that shall

  776. blow our

  777. minds every

  778. single time

  779. we think

  780. about it

  781. God is the

  782. father of

  783. humanity

  784. verse 29

  785. says since

  786. we are God's

  787. offspring we

  788. should not

  789. think that the

  790. divine being

  791. is like gold

  792. or silver

  793. or stone

  794. an image

  795. made by

  796. human design

  797. and skill

  798. we are God's

  799. offspring

  800. and our

  801. response

  802. because of

  803. that should

  804. never be

  805. to worship

  806. anything else

  807. but God

  808. himself

  809. and God

  810. as the

  811. father of

  812. humanity

  813. is not

  814. some stern

  815. father standing

  816. with the rule

  817. book ready

  818. and eager to

  819. punish those

  820. who defy

  821. him

  822. he is a

  823. loving father

  824. who has

  825. made a

  826. way for

  827. us

  828. wayward

  829. sinful

  830. children

  831. to be

  832. made right

  833. with him

  834. through the

  835. death and

  836. resurrection

  837. of Jesus

  838. Christ

  839. and God

  840. is calling

  841. you home

  842. God is

  843. calling his

  844. people to

  845. himself

  846. will you

  847. listen to

  848. the call

  849. of a

  850. loving

  851. of a

  852. good

  853. of an

  854. almighty

  855. father

  856. God

  857. and repent

  858. how you

  859. respond to

  860. that question

  861. is important

  862. because of

  863. the final

  864. truth that

  865. Paul draws

  866. to our

  867. attention

  868. this morning

  869. in verse

  870. 31

  871. for he

  872. has set

  873. a day

  874. when he

  875. will judge

  876. the world

  877. with justice

  878. by the man

  879. he has

  880. appointed

  881. he has

  882. given proof

  883. of this

  884. to everyone

  885. by raising

  886. him from

  887. the dead

  888. the final

  889. truth

  890. this morning

  891. is that

  892. God is

  893. the judge

  894. of all

  895. the world

  896. there will

  897. be a day

  898. when every

  899. person who

  900. has ever

  901. lived will

  902. stand before

  903. God as

  904. he judges

  905. the world

  906. there is

  907. no naughty

  908. or nice

  909. list

  910. there will

  911. not be a

  912. final chance

  913. to say but

  914. God I was

  915. a good

  916. person

  917. as we all

  918. stand before

  919. God

  920. there will

  921. be those

  922. who are

  923. called to

  924. live in

  925. harmony

  926. with him

  927. forever

  928. in his

  929. perfect

  930. presence

  931. and then

  932. there are

  933. those who

  934. will be

  935. cast out

  936. of his

  937. presence

  938. who will

  939. spend

  940. eternity

  941. in his

  942. just

  943. judgment

  944. against

  945. sin

  946. so why

  947. would we

  948. worship

  949. idols

  950. because on

  951. that final

  952. day no

  953. no idol

  954. nothing

  955. will be able

  956. to save

  957. us as we

  958. stand before

  959. a holy

  960. God

  961. we shouldn't

  962. worship idols

  963. but we

  964. should only

  965. worship

  966. God

  967. because he

  968. alone is

  969. the one who

  970. can save

  971. us

  972. friends this

  973. is not a

  974. point that we

  975. can take

  976. lightly

  977. or a decision

  978. that we can

  979. put off to

  980. some future

  981. event

  982. we must take

  983. this seriously

  984. because God

  985. as just

  986. must punish

  987. sin

  988. and that

  989. starts

  990. with us

  991. he proved

  992. this by

  993. sending

  994. Jesus

  995. his perfect

  996. son

  997. who paid

  998. the punishment

  999. for every

  1000. Christian

  1001. on the

  1002. cross

  1003. so for all

  1004. those who

  1005. have repented

  1006. and put

  1007. their trust

  1008. in Jesus

  1009. we do not

  1010. await the

  1011. day of

  1012. judgment

  1013. with fear

  1014. and with

  1015. trembling

  1016. but we

  1017. await the

  1018. return of

  1019. the Lord

  1020. with eager

  1021. anticipation

  1022. because we

  1023. will be with

  1024. him forever

  1025. and that is

  1026. why Paul

  1027. is standing

  1028. before the

  1029. people of

  1030. Athens

  1031. and that is

  1032. why I am

  1033. standing here

  1034. before you

  1035. this morning

  1036. begging you

  1037. to listen

  1038. to the call

  1039. of a loving

  1040. father

  1041. to repent

  1042. and come to

  1043. him

  1044. to put your

  1045. trust in

  1046. Jesus

  1047. and be

  1048. forgiven

  1049. people will

  1050. respond

  1051. differently

  1052. to this

  1053. message

  1054. there were

  1055. those in

  1056. verse 32

  1057. who sneered

  1058. at Paul

  1059. and then

  1060. there were

  1061. those in

  1062. verse 34

  1063. who became

  1064. followers of

  1065. Jesus upon

  1066. hearing that

  1067. wonderful message

  1068. of who God

  1069. is

  1070. how will you

  1071. respond this

  1072. morning

  1073. think back

  1074. to where we

  1075. started off

  1076. traveling

  1077. in a new

  1078. city

  1079. looking at

  1080. the sights

  1081. and taking

  1082. in the

  1083. beautiful

  1084. scenery

  1085. our world

  1086. is just

  1087. like Athens

  1088. we can walk

  1089. around the

  1090. cultural centers

  1091. of the world

  1092. and see just

  1093. as many

  1094. idols as

  1095. Paul saw

  1096. Christian

  1097. how do you

  1098. respond at

  1099. the sight

  1100. of idolatry

  1101. do you see

  1102. the reality

  1103. of it and

  1104. speak into

  1105. that situation

  1106. we need

  1107. to take

  1108. the message

  1109. to the

  1110. world

  1111. that we

  1112. serve a

  1113. wonderful

  1114. God

  1115. who is

  1116. creator

  1117. sustainer

  1118. ruler

  1119. father

  1120. and judge

  1121. we need

  1122. to tell

  1123. people the

  1124. truth

  1125. because he

  1126. alone is

  1127. the one

  1128. who deserves

  1129. our worship

  1130. and we

  1131. should be

  1132. disturbed

  1133. and deeply

  1134. distressed

  1135. by idolatry

  1136. and if

  1137. we aren't

  1138. what does

  1139. that say

  1140. about our

  1141. lives

  1142. imagine if

  1143. God were

  1144. to take a

  1145. look into

  1146. our homes

  1147. into our

  1148. minds

  1149. into our

  1150. lives

  1151. what idols

  1152. would he

  1153. find

  1154. as we

  1155. engage with

  1156. our friends

  1157. we need to

  1158. be so grieved

  1159. by their

  1160. sin

  1161. distressed

  1162. by their

  1163. idolatry

  1164. that we

  1165. have a

  1166. burning

  1167. desire

  1168. and we

  1169. are burdened

  1170. to share

  1171. the gospel

  1172. with them

  1173. we need to

  1174. speak the

  1175. gospel of

  1176. Jesus

  1177. and not be

  1178. apathetic

  1179. in the light

  1180. of idolatry

  1181. and if you're

  1182. not a Christian

  1183. this morning

  1184. let me

  1185. challenge you

  1186. and say

  1187. that no

  1188. amount of

  1189. idols will

  1190. satisfy

  1191. no amount

  1192. of idols

  1193. will

  1194. fulfill

  1195. that hunger

  1196. that you

  1197. have

  1198. the only

  1199. person

  1200. that deserves

  1201. all of your

  1202. worship

  1203. is the

  1204. living God

  1205. and he

  1206. calls you

  1207. to come

  1208. to him

  1209. to repent

  1210. and to put

  1211. your trust

  1212. in his

  1213. son

  1214. Jesus

  1215. Christ

  1216. let's pray

  1217. together

  1218. heavenly

  1219. father we

  1220. ask for

  1221. forgiveness

  1222. for the

  1223. times that

  1224. we have

  1225. worshipped

  1226. idols

  1227. instead

  1228. of you

  1229. father

  1230. would you

  1231. reveal to

  1232. us the

  1233. idols of

  1234. our hearts

  1235. the things

  1236. that we

  1237. have put

  1238. above you

  1239. in our

  1240. lives and

  1241. the things

  1242. that we

  1243. prioritize over

  1244. you father

  1245. forgive us

  1246. and father

  1247. help us take

  1248. that wonderful

  1249. message to

  1250. the world

  1251. that we

  1252. serve an

  1253. almighty

  1254. God

  1255. a God

  1256. who is

  1257. creator

  1258. sustainer

  1259. ruler

  1260. father

  1261. and judge

  1262. and help us

  1263. call people

  1264. to repent

  1265. and believe

  1266. because the

  1267. kingdom of

  1268. God is at

  1269. hand

  1270. and we

  1271. pray this

  1272. in the

  1273. precious

  1274. and holy

  1275. name of

  1276. our

  1277. saviour

  1278. Jesus

  1279. Christ

  1280. amen

  1281. well thank

  1282. you so much

  1283. Alistair for

  1284. taking us

  1285. through that

  1286. passage and

  1287. I trust

  1288. that it's

  1289. caused all

  1290. of us to

  1291. just stop

  1292. and to

  1293. think about

  1294. the world

  1295. in which we

  1296. live and

  1297. perhaps the

  1298. things that

  1299. we are doing

  1300. and the

  1301. things that

  1302. we're

  1303. pursuing

  1304. in our

  1305. lives

  1306. one of the

  1307. things that

  1308. we've been

  1309. doing over

  1310. the last

  1311. few Sundays

  1312. is we've

  1313. just been

  1314. hearing from

  1315. people in

  1316. our church

  1317. family and

  1318. they've been

  1319. telling us

  1320. their stories

  1321. about how

  1322. they came

  1323. to first

  1324. meet Jesus

  1325. and it's

  1326. been so

  1327. encouraging to

  1328. hear so

  1329. many people

  1330. feedback to

  1331. us how

  1332. they've been

  1333. connecting with

  1334. these stories

  1335. as we've

  1336. just been

  1337. hearing from

  1338. people

  1339. and we

  1340. said this

  1341. is the

  1342. truth about

  1343. the church

  1344. of Jesus

  1345. that it's

  1346. made up of

  1347. many different

  1348. people who

  1349. are doing

  1350. many different

  1351. things all

  1352. with very

  1353. different

  1354. stories about

  1355. how we all

  1356. came to

  1357. meet the

  1358. one same

  1359. saviour

  1360. and so we're

  1361. going to hear

  1362. another story

  1363. now from one

  1364. of our members

  1365. who's called

  1366. Declan

  1367. Declan's going

  1368. to tell us a

  1369. little bit of

  1370. his story

  1371. and particularly

  1372. about how he

  1373. now seeks

  1374. to use the

  1375. everyday things

  1376. that he does

  1377. in his life

  1378. to lovingly

  1379. connect with

  1380. people and

  1381. tell them about

  1382. Jesus

  1383. and once

  1384. Declan's

  1385. finished we're

  1386. going to have

  1387. our final

  1388. song

  1389. hi my

  1390. name is

  1391. Declan

  1392. I'm a

  1393. member at

  1394. Brunsfield

  1395. Evangelical

  1396. Church

  1397. I'm 29

  1398. and an

  1399. air traffic

  1400. controller

  1401. I'm a

  1402. Christian

  1403. I believe

  1404. in God

  1405. I'm just

  1406. going to

  1407. take a

  1408. couple of

  1409. minutes

  1410. now to

  1411. explain a

  1412. little bit

  1413. about why

  1414. I do

  1415. and how

  1416. that happened

  1417. for me

  1418. so I

  1419. grew up in

  1420. a lovely

  1421. place called

  1422. Peebles in

  1423. a Christian

  1424. household and

  1425. we always

  1426. went to

  1427. church and

  1428. I had a

  1429. very positive

  1430. experience going

  1431. to church

  1432. growing up

  1433. there was

  1434. people who

  1435. leaked out

  1436. for me

  1437. and were

  1438. very good

  1439. for me

  1440. so growing

  1441. up I

  1442. always believed

  1443. in God

  1444. and as a

  1445. young teenager

  1446. I helped

  1447. out at a

  1448. holiday club

  1449. in Peebles

  1450. and there I

  1451. got to meet

  1452. some older

  1453. teenagers and

  1454. young adults

  1455. who were also

  1456. Christians

  1457. and that was

  1458. the first time

  1459. I'd met some

  1460. other young

  1461. Christians and

  1462. I got to make

  1463. some great

  1464. friendships and

  1465. get to know

  1466. them more

  1467. and I saw

  1468. that they were

  1469. quite cool and

  1470. there was

  1471. something different

  1472. about them

  1473. the way they

  1474. acted and

  1475. the way they

  1476. interacted with

  1477. each other

  1478. and just

  1479. their priorities

  1480. in life were

  1481. a bit different

  1482. and I liked

  1483. it I thought

  1484. it looked good

  1485. and I could

  1486. see that the

  1487. thing that was

  1488. different about

  1489. them was that

  1490. they were

  1491. Christians and

  1492. I decided then

  1493. you know I

  1494. want some of

  1495. that and so

  1496. I thought this

  1497. being a Christian

  1498. was a good

  1499. thing and so

  1500. when I was 16

  1501. I made a formal

  1502. commitment you could

  1503. say and I was

  1504. baptized and from

  1505. then on I would

  1506. always say I've

  1507. been a Christian

  1508. I've always

  1509. believed in God

  1510. but as I got

  1511. slightly older and

  1512. I went to

  1513. university I

  1514. maybe became what

  1515. you might call a

  1516. part-time Christian

  1517. I was still going

  1518. to church I was

  1519. still involved in

  1520. some church

  1521. activities but

  1522. outside of that I

  1523. wasn't really giving

  1524. God much respect I

  1525. wasn't considering

1526. him in the things I

  1527. was choosing to do

1528. and the way I was

  1529. living my life and

  1530. around about this

  1531. time I got involved

  1532. with an organization

  1533. called Christians in

  1534. Sport and when I

  1535. was at university I

  1536. was very sporty and

  1537. Christians in Sport

1538. was great for me I

  1539. got to meet other

  1540. like-minded individuals

  1541. who were Christian and

  1542. also into their sport

  1543. and we'd do little

  1544. Bible studies and

  1545. discuss issues that

  1546. were really specific

  1547. to being a Christian

1548. in sport and it was

1549. then I learned how to

  1550. match up having a

  1551. faith and living that

  1552. out and matching it

  1553. up with sport or

  1554. generally matching it

  1555. up with your lifestyle

1556. and it was someone I

  1557. met through Christians

1558. in Sport who was I

  1559. think aware of this

  1560. sort of part-time

  1561. Christian lifestyle that

1562. I was living and one

1563. day he just said to

1564. me what are you doing

  1565. and that was a

  1566. catalyst for me to

  1567. think about the way

1568. I was living my life

  1569. and I decided if I was

1570. going to be a Christian

1571. I wanted to do it

  1572. properly and so I

  1573. wanted to look into

  1574. the Bible more and

1575. see what it said and

1576. actually if it was true

1577. and so that was the

  1578. beginning of a process

1579. which is still going on

1580. for me where I studied

1581. the Bible and looked at

  1582. what it said and

  1583. scrutinized parts of it

1584. and I've come to the

  1585. point where you've

  1586. probably guessed it

  1587. that I really believe

1588. in God and the Bible

  1589. and I think it's all

  1590. true and I think it's

  1591. also good news which

  1592. might sound a little

1593. bit cheesy but I do

  1594. think it's good and

1595. the Bible tells us that

  1596. when we become a

  1597. Christian there is a

  1598. transformation we're

  1599. transformed from

  1600. before we're a

  1601. Christian until

  1602. afterwards and for me

  1603. that wasn't a sort of

  1604. instantaneous moment

  1605. it's taken years and

  1606. it's still ongoing but

1607. the more I study the

1608. Bible the more I get

1609. to know God and the

  1610. more I am transformed

1611. you could say and the

  1612. more I'm convinced that

1613. God exists and that the

1614. Bible is a good news

  1615. story and as I

  1616. mentioned Christians in

  1617. Sport was really

  1618. important for me and

  1619. knowing that the Bible

1620. is true and that God

  1621. exists and that it's

1622. good news I want to

  1623. share it and Christians

  1624. in Sport has been

  1625. really helpful for giving

1626. me a way to do that and

  1627. something we used to

  1628. speak about the

  1629. Christians in Sport

  1630. meetings was worshipping

1631. God and being a witness

1632. for God so in my sport

1633. and triathlon I can do

1634. that now when we're in

  1635. church and we're singing

  1636. we're all quite

  1637. comfortable that we're

  1638. worshipping God then

  1639. but I'm not a

  1640. particularly good singer

  1641. but I'm an okay

  1642. swimmer and when I'm

  1643. swimming I can still

  1644. worship God and the

  1645. Bible tells us that

  1646. actually anything that

  1647. we do and everything

1648. that we do we can

1649. worship God so when I'm

1650. doing my sport I can

1651. worship God but I can

1652. also be a witness for

  1653. God and through my

  1654. sport I get a chance

  1655. to make great

  1656. friendships and get

  1657. to know people and

  1658. that's really good and

  1659. I enjoy that but it's

1660. also a chance to share

  1661. sometimes a little bit

1662. and sometimes a lot of

1663. the gospel and some of

1664. what the Bible tells us

1665. and so through my sport I

1666. can worship God and I

1667. can be a witness for him

1668. and that's some of what

1669. God asks us to do and

  1670. so that's what I try and

1671. do each day and that

1672. more or less is my story

1673. and if you have any

  1674. questions about it then

1675. feel free to get in

  1676. touch
