  1. Our reading for today is the book of Isaiah, chapter 54, verses 4 to 8.

    Isaiah 54:4–8

  2. Do not be afraid, you will not suffer shame.

  3. Do not fear disgrace, you will not be humiliated.

  4. You will forget the shame of your youth, and remember no more the reproach of their widowhood.

  5. For your maker is your husband, the Lord Almighty is his name, the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer.

  6. He is called the God of all the earth.

  7. The Lord will call you back as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit.

  8. A wife who married young, only to be rejected, says your God.

  9. For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back.

  10. In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment,

  11. but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you, says the Lord, your Redeemer.

  12. Our second Bible reading today is taken from John, chapter 2, verses 1 to 11.

    John 2:1–11

  13. On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.

  14. Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

  15. When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him,

  16. They have no more wine.

  17. Dear woman, why do you involve me?

  18. Jesus replied,

  19. My time has not yet come.

  20. His mother said to the servants,

  21. Do whatever he tells you.

  22. Nearby stood six stone water jars,

  23. the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,

  24. each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

  25. Jesus said to the servants,

  26. Fill the jars with water.

  27. So they filled them to the brim.

  28. Then he told them,

  29. Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.

  30. They did so,

  31. and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.

  32. He did not realise where it had come from,

  33. though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

  34. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said,

  35. Everyone brings out the choice wine first,

  36. and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink.

  37. But you have saved the best till now.

  38. This, the first of his miraculous signs,

  39. Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee.

  40. He thus revealed his glory,

  41. and his disciples put their faith in him.

  42. Let's pray.

  43. Dear Lord God,

  44. We thank you for your word,

  45. and for the truth that it contains.

  46. We pray,

  47. that as Graham speaks to us now,

  48. you would speak through him,

  49. and that you would open our hearts and our minds

  50. to hear from your word.

  51. In Jesus' name I pray.

  52. Amen.

  53. Well, good morning folks.

  54. It's so lovely to have you with us today.

  55. Here's what we're going to do

  56. over the next number of weeks.

  57. We're going to spend time in John's gospel.

  58. This account of Jesus' life

  59. that was penned by one of his closest friends and followers,

  60. written so that everyday people of John's generation

  61. and of every generation ever since

  62. would be able to pick it up,

  63. read, understand about Jesus,

  64. believe, and have life in his name.

  65. And it's a gospel full of encounters

  66. that Jesus had with people,

  67. different people.

  68. Different people with different stories,

  69. people doing different things,

  70. people from different places,

  71. people with all sorts of different stuff

  72. going on in their lives.

  73. And they each meet Jesus,

  74. and an encounter with him

  75. flips the whole way

  76. that they understand themselves,

  77. and they understand the world

  78. in which they live,

  79. and the lives that they are living

  80. on its head.

  81. So let me invite you to grab a Bible

  82. and come with me to John chapter 2.

    John 2 chapter mention

  83. We're going to dive into the first of these today.

  84. And as we come to John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

  85. let me go all Dr. Pepper on you.

  86. Right, a wedding.

  87. What's the worst that could happen?

  88. Are you got any good stories

  89. about car crash moments from weddings?

  90. Let me tell you about one

  91. that I was reading about recently

  92. that will, I think,

  93. really take the biscuit

  94. when it comes to car crash moments.

  95. Right, everyone is getting ready

  96. for what do they call it?

  97. The big day.

  98. It's going great.

  99. The service is brilliant.

  100. The dinner is exquisite.

  101. Everybody's having a ball.

  102. And the moment in the day

  103. comes for the speeches.

  104. Now, speeches are always a highlight

  105. of any wedding day, aren't they?

  106. Well, on this wedding day,

  107. the bride's father goes first.

  108. And like any good father of the bride,

  109. he gushes with pride at his daughter

  110. and on a dry eye in the house.

  111. And the groom's up next.

  112. He showers his bride with compliments.

  113. I mean, well played, boys.

  114. Well played.

  115. And then it comes to the best man

  116. who sits down at the end of his speech

  117. and thinking he's nailed it.

  118. Only for somebody a few moments later

  119. to whisper in his ear

  120. and inform him

  121. that he's actually used the name

  122. of the groom's ex-girlfriend

  123. all the way through his speech.

  124. I'm no expert,

  125. but that's, in my opinion,

  126. what they'd kind of call

  127. a Dr. Pepper moment, right?

  128. That is an absolute howler

  129. from the best man.

  130. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall

  131. the first time he went round

  132. to the newlyweds house for dinner

  133. in the years to come.

  134. John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

  135. here's what we're doing.

  136. We're joining a wedding

  137. that is on the verge

  138. of a Dr. Pepper moment itself.

  139. All right, here is a wedding

  140. in John chapter 2

    John 2 chapter mention

  141. that almost all went wrong.

  142. You see, in the first century,

  143. Jewish culture,

  144. a culture that centers

  145. on honor and shame,

  146. the worst thing

  147. that could happen

  148. at a wedding

  149. is that the guests

  150. run out of food and drink, right?

  151. The worst thing imaginable.

  152. Now, we're in the days

  153. before outside caterers here.

  154. We're in the days

  155. before wedding planners

  156. when that job

  157. is kind of someone else's responsibility.

  158. In this day,

  159. it is one person's responsibility

  160. and that person's solely

  161. to make sure

  162. that the food and drink

  163. keeps flowing

  164. for the entirety

  165. of the feast,

  166. which in this culture

  167. could last for days.

  168. Whose job is that?

  169. It is the job of the groom.

  170. So you've got two jobs, bro.

  171. Firstly, you need to say,

  172. I do.

  173. And secondly,

  174. you need to make sure

  175. that everyone at this feast

  176. has enough to eat and drink, right?

  177. You can nail this one.

  178. But at this wedding in Cana,

  179. do you see,

  180. if you've got the text there,

  181. how our groom learns

  182. at verse three,

  183. that he is staring

  184. a Dr. Pepper moment

  185. right in the face.

  186. Now, why is he staring

  187. that moment right in his face?

  188. Four words.

  189. Verse three,

  190. the wine ran out.

  191. The wine ran out.

  192. I mean, he is,

  193. he is never going to live

  194. this one down.

  195. The shame that he is about

  196. to bring on his family,

  197. on his bride,

  198. and most importantly,

  199. himself.

  200. What's he going to do?

  201. And it's not like there's

  202. an offie just down the road

  203. that he can go down to,

  204. saying,

  205. boys,

  206. if you come down with me,

  207. we can get a crate load

  208. and bring it back.

  209. It might still be open.

  210. No,

  211. here is a groom

  212. who is living

  213. his worst nightmare.

  214. This must have been

  215. the stuff in the days

  216. before the wedding

  217. that kept him up at night.

  218. And there ain't nothing

  219. he can do

  220. about this situation.

  221. And Jesus and his disciples

  222. are at this wedding.

  223. Do you know,

  224. as a side,

  225. I love,

  226. I love

  227. that Jesus was the kind of man

  228. who got invited to

  229. and attended weddings.

  230. Right?

  231. How many of us

  232. have a picture of Jesus

  233. in our minds?

  234. A bit like Ned Flanders

  235. from The Simpsons,

  236. except he's slightly meaner

  237. and he's slightly stricter.

  238. Right?

  239. He is kind of a

  240. kind of a Santa Claus

  241. kind of figure.

  242. Right?

  243. Not that he gives you presents,

  244. but it is his job

  245. to make sure

  246. and discern

  247. who has been naughty

  248. and who has been nice.

  249. Right?

  250. But that's not the Jesus

  251. who we encounter

  252. in the pages of Scripture.

  253. In fact,

  254. later in John's Gospel,

  255. Jesus is

  256. talking about himself.

  257. He's talking about

  258. why he has come.

  259. And he talks about,

  260. and this is John chapter 10,

    John 10:10

  261. verse 10,

  262. he's talking about

  263. how he's come

  264. that his people

  265. may have abundant life.

  266. You see,

  267. that's what's on offer

  268. by believing

  269. in the name of Jesus Christ.

  270. And that abundant life,

  271. we have to understand,

  272. is the life

  273. that he is currently living

  274. in joyful communion

  275. with God his Father.

  276. So,

  277. what that means,

  278. in other words,

  279. if you and I want to know

  280. what a fully human,

  281. joyful,

  282. loving human experience

  283. life is,

  284. then we need to look

  285. no further

  286. than to Jesus.

  287. Which is an incredible claim,

  288. is it not,

  289. if you stop and think about it?

  290. An incredible claim.

  291. And yet,

  292. this is the one

  293. that Jesus makes.

  294. And of course,

  295. in the life of the Christian,

  296. this is the business

  297. that God is into

  298. as he,

  299. by his Spirit,

  300. who's indwelling us,

  301. is transforming us more

  302. as we behold

  303. the glory of Jesus Christ

  304. into his image.

  305. Restoring

  306. that full humanity

  307. that has been broken

  308. by the sin of the fall.

  309. Jesus is living

  310. a fully human life.

  311. Into celebration,

  312. do you see him here?

  313. Into celebration,

  314. knowing friendship,

  315. knowing joy,

  316. and enjoying

  317. the good creation

  318. according to its good design.

  319. And Jesus is at this wedding.

  320. And he learns,

  321. doesn't he?

  322. Do you see from his,

  323. from his mom,

  324. he learns about

  325. the looming nightmare

  326. that's facing the groom?

  327. And the question in the text

  328. is what is he going to do?

  329. What's he going to do

  330. with this information, right?

  331. Is he going to get

  332. his smartphone out?

  333. Probably not in this day,

  334. but go with me.

  335. Is he going to get

  336. his smartphone out

  337. and film this?

  338. Probably what you and I

  339. would have done, right?

  340. If this happened in our day.

  341. I mean, imagine how many people

  342. would watch that on Facebook.

  343. How many views,

  344. how many likes that would get.

  345. You would be an overnight sensation.

  346. But not Jesus.

  347. Because this episode here

  348. is about him displaying

  349. his glory

  350. to the world

  351. that his disciples

  352. and those watching

  353. might see and believe in him.

  354. As we get a glimpse

  355. into who he is

  356. and

  357. why he has come.

  358. Now in the text,

  359. you see verse six.

  360. This is where we are.

  361. John tells us

  362. that there are six stone

  363. water jars there.

  364. The type used

  365. for ceremonial washing, right?

  366. Basically the ones

  367. that people would use

  368. to make themselves clean

  369. before they eat.

  370. And what does John say?

  371. Verse six,

  372. that each of those jars

  373. holds 20 or 30 gallons.

  374. Now these are really

  375. important details

  376. in the text.

  377. And Jesus asks,

  378. here's another detail,

  379. that each of these

  380. be filled

  381. to the brim.

  382. Right?

  383. Now maths was never

  384. my strong point

  385. at school.

  386. But even I can

  387. deduce

  388. that that is

  389. a huge

  390. amount of water.

  391. Way more

  392. than I'd imagine

  393. they would actually

  394. ever need

  395. at this

  396. wedding.

  397. Here are all these

  398. stone water jars

  399. filled to the brim

  400. and Jesus turns

  401. every single

  402. drop of it

  403. into wine.

  404. Right?

  405. You read around here

  406. some commentators

  407. they speculate

  408. that that is somewhere

  409. of being our equivalent

  410. of a thousand

  411. bottles

  412. of wine.

  413. A thousand bottles.

  414. Get your head

  415. around that.

  416. Now I don't know

  417. if you've ever been

  418. on a tour

  419. of a vineyard before.

  420. Right?

  421. And learned

  422. how they make wine.

  423. The only time

  424. I've ever done

  425. something like that

  426. was in Stellenbosch.

  427. I was there

  428. in South Africa

  429. a number of years ago

  430. and I don't remember

  431. an awful lot

  432. from that trip

  433. except

  434. for the fact

  435. that I learned

  436. that there's a lot

  437. more to making wine

  438. than for example

  439. there is to making

  440. Ribena.

  441. Okay?

  442. This isn't

  443. 20% cordial

  444. 80% water

  445. and hey presto

  446. there you go

  447. kind of thing.

  448. Right?

  449. Making wine

  450. takes time

  451. and it's

  452. a complicated

  453. process.

  454. So here's a question

  455. that you may be

  456. asking from this

  457. text

  458. and it's a great

  459. question to ask

  460. how?

  461. How was Jesus

  462. able

  463. to do this?

  464. I mean H2O

  465. doesn't just turn

  466. into C2H5OH

  467. ethanol

  468. right?

  469. What a bizarre

  470. thing to believe.

  471. True.

  472. But

  473. what if Jesus

  474. the one who

  475. stepped in here

  476. is actually

  477. the one who

  478. controls

  479. the laws

  480. of chemistry?

  481. What if

  482. he is the one

  483. who controls

  484. the whole

  485. scene here?

  486. What if

  487. he is the creator

  488. who is able

  489. to do all things

  490. who stepped

  491. into the human

  492. equation

  493. and here he is.

  494. You see here's

  495. what John

  496. has already said

  497. about Jesus

  498. back in chapter

  499. one.

  500. If you want

  501. to flip back

  502. a page.

  503. Rightly off

  504. he said

  505. all things

  506. were made

  507. through him.

  508. That he is

  509. God in the

  510. flesh.

  511. This is Jesus

  512. and therefore

  513. this is exactly

  514. the kind of

  515. thing that we'd

  516. expect someone

  517. making that

  518. claim would be

  519. able to do.

  520. Here's a confession.

  521. I think I would

  522. struggle more

  523. with this.

  524. If Jesus

  525. made these

  526. claims about

  527. himself and he

  528. wasn't able to

  529. do things like

  530. this.

  531. Jesus has

  532. this kind

  533. of power.

  534. The question

  535. is what will

  536. Jesus do

  537. with this

  538. power?

  539. It's interesting

  540. isn't it?

  541. It's a question

  542. that maybe

  543. as a society

  544. and as a

  545. world that

  546. we're asking

  547. ourselves right

  548. now about

  549. those people

  550. who are in

  551. positions of

  552. power.

  553. Right?

  554. In those

  555. positions of

  556. influence.

  557. Having those

  558. platforms.

  559. What will

  560. they do

  561. with the

  562. power that's

  563. been given

  564. to them?

  565. What will

  566. they do

  567. with the

  568. power that

  569. they have?

  570. Now part of

  571. the question

  572. and we'll

  573. come back

  574. to it.

  575. What would

  576. Jesus do

  577. with the

  578. power that

  579. he has?

  580. But there's

  581. a question

  582. you might

  583. have in

  584. your mind.

  585. How is

  586. Jesus able

  587. to do

  588. this?

  589. Secondly,

  590. you might

  591. be thinking

  592. well people

  593. back then

  594. didn't know

  595. as much

  596. about science

  597. as we do

  598. today.

  599. I mean

  600. Einstein

  601. didn't come

  602. up with

  603. the equals

  604. mc squared

  605. until 1905.

  606. What do

  607. these guys

  608. know?

  609. Well true.

  610. But these

  611. people probably

  612. knew enough

  613. about the

  614. way things

  615. work in the

  616. world to

  617. know that

  618. this isn't

  619. normally how

  620. you make

  621. wine.

  622. In other

  623. words these

  624. people who

  625. taste, it's

  626. important to

  627. see that as

  628. well, the

  629. taste is

  630. included here,

  631. they taste the

  632. water turned

  633. into wine,

  634. these people

  635. aren't fools.

  636. Right?

  637. They know how

  638. this process

  639. normally goes,

  640. they aren't

  641. fools.

  642. In fact, do

  643. you see how

  644. the proof is

  645. in the pudding

  646. here?

  647. Which is

  648. probably completely

  649. the wrong

  650. metaphor to

  651. use here but

  652. we'll go with

  653. it.

  654. Do you see

  655. at verse 9

  656. how the

  657. master of

  658. the ceremonies

  659. comes on

  660. the scene?

  661. Right?

  662. He's probably

  663. been to a

  664. wedding or

  665. two, I'd

  666. imagine in

  667. his lifetime

  668. he tastes

  669. the wine.

  670. Right?

  671. Another detail

  672. important to

  673. see here, he

  674. tastes the

  675. wine, a

  676. physical thing.

  677. Right?

  678. He doesn't

  679. get his wine

  680. app out on

  681. his phone and

  682. say it looks

  683. to me like a

  684. Pinot

  685. Noir.

  686. He doesn't

  687. do the smell

  688. test that we

  689. all do with

  690. wine, pretending

  691. we know what's

  692. going on when

  693. actually we don't

  694. and saying it

  695. smells like the

  696. good stuff.

  697. This man tastes

  698. the wine and

  699. his palate can

  700. detect when wine

  701. is wine and it

  702. can detect when

  703. wine is bad and

  704. it can detect when

  705. wine is good and

  706. when it is good.

  707. wine.

  708. And he tastes this

  709. wine and you

  710. see how he

  711. concludes that

  712. this wine is

  713. the best.

  714. This is wonderful

  715. stuff that's been

  716. brought out here.

  717. I mean this is

  718. the first century

  719. equivalent of the

  720. Screaming Eagle

  721. Cabernet Sauvignon

  722. which somebody paid

  723. $500,000 for

  724. recently at a

  725. charity auction.

  726. This stuff is the

  727. best.

  728. Here's the point.

  729. Jesus hasn't just

  730. provided quantity.

  731. Jesus has provided

  732. quality.

  733. Do you see it?

  734. Both of those

  735. things.

  736. His provision in

  737. other words is

  738. extravagantly

  739. abundant.

  740. Way more than

  741. anything we could

  742. possibly conceive

  743. of.

  744. And verse 10

  745. here's what's

  746. going on.

  747. The MC calls for

  748. the groom because

  749. the usual

  750. thing to do in

  751. this culture is to

  752. bring out the good

  753. wine first.

  754. And once your

  755. guests were tired

  756. and they're full you

  757. bring out the cheap

  758. stuff because they

  759. won't really notice.

  760. But not so this

  761. groom.

  762. So thinks the MC.

  763. This groom has done

  764. the opposite.

  765. He's not gone for the

  766. downward curve on the

  767. day.

  768. He's gone for the

  769. upward curve.

  770. To quote Vanessa

  771. Williams he's gone

  772. and saved the best

  773. to last.

  774. And you see maybe

  775. zooming out here

  776. what's going on.

  777. This groom

  778. he hasn't just

  779. been spared

  780. shame.

  781. Actually

  782. he's been given

  783. honor

  784. in the wedding

  785. that almost

  786. all went

  787. wrong.

  788. But you see

  789. there's way

  790. more going on

  791. here

  792. than simply

  793. Jesus pulling

  794. off a neat

  795. trick.

  796. right like

  797. some kind of

  798. first century

  799. David Blaine.

  800. More going on

  801. here and

  802. to see it

  803. and I pray

  804. that we see

  805. it and

  806. savor it.

  807. A good question

  808. to ask ourselves

  809. from the text

  810. is who is

  811. Jesus standing

  812. in for

  813. here at this

  814. wedding.

  815. Now the

  816. culture vultures

  817. out there might

  818. know that

  819. that huge

  820. painting of

  821. this scene by

  822. Paolo Veronese

  823. hangs proudly

  824. in the

  825. Louvre

  826. in Paris.

  827. Some of you

  828. might have

  829. gone and

  830. seen it.

  831. And it's

  832. a huge

  833. picture.

  834. And if you

  835. look carefully

  836. at it there's

  837. something really

  838. strange actually

  839. about this

  840. scene.

  841. And the

  842. strange part

  843. of it is

  844. when you look

  845. at the head

  846. of the table

  847. the positions

  848. of honor.

  849. And the

  850. strange thing

  851. is it's not

  852. the groom

  853. that's sitting

  854. in that

  855. position

  856. where you

  857. normally

  858. expect him

  859. to be

  860. sitting.

  861. Actually is

  862. Jesus sitting

  863. in that

  864. position?

  865. Now I've

  866. got no idea

  867. whether Veronese

  868. meant that

  869. or not.

  870. But that is

  871. profoundly the

  872. point of the

  873. passage.

  874. Who is

  875. Jesus standing

  876. in for here

  877. friends?

  878. He's standing

  879. in for the

  880. groom.

  881. Isn't he?

  882. And when you

  883. add to that

  884. the fact that

  885. this little

  886. episode and

  887. as it

  888. follows John

    John 1 chapter mention

  889. chapter 1

  890. and on

  891. to John

    John 2 chapter mention

  892. chapter 2

  893. as he

  894. presents it

  895. it takes

  896. place at

  897. the end

  898. of the

  899. first week

  900. of Jesus'

  901. public

  902. ministry

  903. as John

  904. records it

  905. here i.e.

  906. it happens

  907. on the

  908. seventh day

  909. the perfect

  910. day

  911. you begin

  912. to see that

  913. there's more

  914. going on here

  915. than we might

  916. first see.

  917. you know

  918. I want you

  919. to think

  920. back

  921. did you

  922. catch the

  923. reading from

  924. Isaiah that

  925. we heard

  926. earlier

  927. what God

  928. had said to

  929. his people

  930. centuries before

  931. Jesus arrived

  932. God calling

  933. his people to

  934. turn back to

  935. him to stop

  936. running their

  937. way their

  938. sinful way

  939. following and

  940. worshipping idols

  941. to turn back

  942. to him and to

  943. trust him

  944. why?

  945. What will God

  946. do for them

  947. and be for

  948. them in the

  949. years to

  950. come?

  951. Here's what

  952. Isaiah records

  953. God says

  954. do not be

  955. afraid

  956. you will not

  957. be put to

  958. shame

  959. do not fear

  960. disgrace

  961. you will not

  962. be humiliated

  963. you will forget

  964. the shame of

  965. your youth

  966. and remember

  967. no more

  968. the reproach

  969. of your

  970. widowhood

  971. for your

  972. maker is

  973. your husband

  974. the Lord

  975. Almighty

  976. is his name

  977. the Holy

  978. One of

  979. Israel is

  980. your redeemer

  981. he is

  982. called the

  983. God of

  984. all the

  985. earth

  986. so God

  987. is promising

  988. to come

  989. and rescue

  990. his people

  991. and be for

  992. them

  993. a perfect

  994. husband

  995. and here

  996. is Jesus

  997. the perfect

  998. divine groom

  999. who has come

  1000. for that

  1001. express

  1002. reason

  1003. to rescue

  1004. his bride

  1005. his people

  1006. because the

  1007. wedding that

  1008. almost all

  1009. went wrong

  1010. it points us

  1011. to consider

  1012. the wedding

  1013. where all

  1014. will be

  1015. right

  1016. because the

  1017. Bible story

  1018. it ends

  1019. with a

  1020. wedding

  1021. it ends

  1022. with Jesus

  1023. the groom

  1024. and his

  1025. people

  1026. the bride

  1027. God

  1028. finally

  1029. and fully

  1030. dwelling

  1031. with his

  1032. people

  1033. which has

  1034. been his

  1035. intention

  1036. all along

  1037. dwelling with

  1038. them fully

  1039. in his

  1040. new creation

  1041. and we get

  1042. the scene

  1043. there in

  1044. revelation

  1045. of a

  1046. great

  1047. multitude

  1048. of people

  1049. are there

  1050. from every

  1051. tribe

  1052. from every

  1053. tongue

  1054. from every

  1055. nation

  1056. gathered

  1057. together

  1058. singing

  1059. one song

  1060. glory

  1061. to the

  1062. lamb

  1063. who was

  1064. slain

  1065. worshipping

  1066. their

  1067. heavenly

  1068. father

  1069. gathered

  1070. together

  1071. as one

  1072. people

  1073. of faith

  1074. and feasting

  1075. with

  1076. Jesus

  1077. in his

  1078. new

  1079. and in

  1080. his

  1081. perfect

  1082. kingdom

  1083. now let me

  1084. ask you

  1085. is a

  1086. wonderful

  1087. thing

  1088. to consider

  1089. and know

  1090. to be

  1091. true

  1092. in light

  1093. of everything

  1094. that's

  1095. gone on

  1096. in recent

  1097. days

  1098. a

  1099. people

  1100. many

  1101. people

  1102. of

  1103. different

  1104. tribes

  1105. tongues

  1106. and

  1107. nations

  1108. gathered

  1109. together

  1110. what a

  1111. wonderful

  1112. scene

  1113. and I want

  1114. you to know

  1115. that if you're

  1116. a Christian

  1117. I want you

  1118. to be

  1119. edified

  1120. as you

  1121. think about

  1122. this scene

  1123. because

  1124. in all your

  1125. difficulties

  1126. that you

  1127. might be

  1128. facing

  1129. right now

  1130. and all the

  1131. questions

  1132. that you

  1133. might have

  1134. all the

  1135. anxiety

  1136. that might

  1137. be lingering

  1138. in your

  1139. heart

  1140. as you

  1141. view

  1142. the world

  1143. and as you

  1144. live your

  1145. life

  1146. in it

  1147. that right

  1148. here

  1149. is your

  1150. untouchable

  1151. hope

  1152. the one

  1153. that you

  1154. have

  1155. for the

  1156. future

  1157. and how

  1158. will Jesus

  1159. bring this

  1160. about

  1161. it's a

  1162. wonderful

  1163. picture

  1164. but how

  1165. will he

  1166. bring it

  1167. about

  1168. well do you

  1169. see how

  1170. Jesus is

  1171. like the

  1172. groom in

  1173. this episode

  1174. but in a

  1175. sense

  1176. friends we

  1177. all too

  1178. are like the

  1179. groom in

  1180. this episode

  1181. world

  1182. because we

  1183. deserve

  1184. shame

  1185. for our

  1186. failure to

  1187. do something

  1188. for our

  1189. failure to

  1190. honour our

  1191. creator God

  1192. as he

  1193. deserves to

  1194. be honoured

  1195. and our

  1196. desire to

  1197. our hearts

  1198. kind of bent

  1199. inward on

  1200. themselves

  1201. our natural

  1202. inclination to

  1203. want to honour

  1204. ourselves

  1205. rather than

  1206. him

  1207. it's the

  1208. very essence

  1209. of sin

  1210. the plagues

  1211. deep inside

  1212. of all of

  1213. us

  1214. and with that

  1215. in mind

  1216. do you see

  1217. how there's a

  1218. wonderful picture

  1219. of the good

  1220. news of the

  1221. gospel here

  1222. as we see

  1223. Jesus standing

  1224. in for

  1225. this groom

  1226. taking the

  1227. shame that

  1228. should have

  1229. been rightfully

  1230. his and

  1231. instead

  1232. bestowing on

  1233. him

  1234. honour

  1235. in fact it's

  1236. essentially what

  1237. the rest of

  1238. John's gospel

  1239. is about

  1240. for what does

  1241. he say

  1242. to see Jesus

  1243. back at verse

  1244. four what does

  1245. he say has

  1246. not yet come

  1247. his hour

  1248. in fact you'll

  1249. get that phrase

  1250. repeatedly in

  1251. John's gospel

  1252. all the way

  1253. through Jesus

  1254. saying my

  1255. hour has not

  1256. yet come

  1257. my hour has

  1258. not yet come

  1259. my hour has

  1260. not yet come

  1261. until he's on

  1262. the verge of

  1263. his death on

  1264. the cross and

  1265. he says my

  1266. hour has

  1267. come

  1268. the cross

  1269. the place

  1270. where he

  1271. goes to

  1272. bear our

  1273. shame

  1274. on himself

  1275. as he hangs

  1276. there as he

  1277. sheds his

  1278. blood as he

  1279. bears the

  1280. wrath of God

  1281. on himself

  1282. the one that

  1283. we deserve

  1284. so that we

  1285. through faith

  1286. in him

  1287. and purely

  1288. by faith

  1289. in him

  1290. as he brings

  1291. us to

  1292. himself and

  1293. as he makes

  1294. us his own

  1295. can know

  1296. the status

  1297. the privilege

  1298. the right

  1299. of being

  1300. honored in

  1301. the eyes of

  1302. our creator

  1303. because our

  1304. lives are

  1305. found in

  1306. the son

  1307. because what

  1308. will Jesus

  1309. do with

  1310. the power

  1311. that he

  1312. has

  1313. answer

  1314. he will

  1315. use it

  1316. to serve

  1317. he will

  1318. use it

  1319. to serve

  1320. the beating

  1321. heart

  1322. of a

  1323. loving

  1324. heavenly

  1325. father

  1326. for a

  1327. world

  1328. that is

  1329. turned

  1330. against

  1331. him

  1332. the

  1333. devotion

  1334. and the

  1335. desire

  1336. and the

  1337. determination

  1338. of Jesus

  1339. the son

  1340. to win

  1341. his bride

  1342. for himself

  1343. as he goes

  1344. to the cross

  1345. this is what's

  1346. driving this

  1347. Jesus will

  1348. use his

  1349. power

  1350. not to

  1351. lord it

  1352. but to

  1353. serve

  1354. you know

  1355. I was

  1356. reflecting

  1357. with

  1358. somebody

  1359. recently

  1360. on the

  1361. phone

  1362. in our

  1363. church

  1364. and

  1365. we were

  1366. talking about

  1367. everything that's

  1368. going on in our

  1369. world just now

  1370. and we were

  1371. mentioning that as we

  1372. look at everything

  1373. that's happening in our

  1374. world at the

  1375. minute the

  1376. uncertainty

  1377. the

  1378. pain

  1379. the sense of

  1380. helplessness

  1381. the

  1382. abuse that's

  1383. going on

  1384. when you behold

  1385. the world

  1386. and in you

  1387. behold

  1388. God's king

  1389. we reflected

  1390. that at perhaps

  1391. no other time

  1392. in our lives

  1393. has following

  1394. Jesus

  1395. being his

  1396. disciple

  1397. both

  1398. made more

  1399. sense

  1400. and

  1401. felt

  1402. more

  1403. attractive

  1404. here is

  1405. God's king

  1406. here is

  1407. Jesus

  1408. so friends

  1409. a wedding

  1410. what's the worst

  1411. that could

  1412. happen

  1413. well according

  1414. to John

  1415. it's

  1416. as he records

  1417. this wedding

  1418. here

  1419. actually the worst

  1420. thing that you

  1421. and I could do

  1422. is that we

  1423. could

  1424. read of this

  1425. wedding

  1426. and we would

  1427. fail to see

  1428. the glory

  1429. of

  1430. and believe

  1431. in

  1432. Jesus

  1433. the perfect

  1434. divine

  1435. groom

  1436. so my question

  1437. as we finish

  1438. is do you

  1439. know him

  1440. as your

  1441. lord

  1442. and king

  1443. and saviour

  1444. and if not

  1445. what a wonderful

  1446. opportunity

  1447. you have

  1448. now

  1449. to

  1450. believe in

  1451. the name

  1452. of Jesus

  1453. and have

  1454. life in his

  1455. name

  1456. so why don't I

  1457. pray

  1458. and

  1459. during this

  1460. time

  1461. why don't you

  1462. just use it

  1463. to reflect

  1464. on everything

  1465. that we've

  1466. spoken about

  1467. just in the

  1468. silence

  1469. before I

  1470. pray

  1471. from heaven

  1472. you came

  1473. helpless

  1474. babe

  1475. entered our

  1476. world

  1477. your glory

  1478. veiled

  1479. not to be

  1480. served

  1481. but to

  1482. serve

  1483. and give

  1484. your life

  1485. that we

  1486. might live

  1487. this is our

  1488. God

  1489. the servant

  1490. king

  1491. he calls

  1492. us now

  1493. to follow

  1494. him

  1495. to bring

  1496. our lives

  1497. as a daily

  1498. offering

  1499. of worship

  1500. to

  1501. the servant

  1502. king

  1503. and so

  1504. father we

  1505. thank you so

  1506. much for your

  1507. precious word

  1508. oh help us

  1509. to savor

  1510. and see

  1511. Jesus

  1512. more

  1513. off the

  1514. back of this

  1515. today

  1516. may these

  1517. words linger

  1518. long

  1519. in our

  1520. hearts

  1521. and in our

  1522. minds

  1523. in Jesus

  1524. precious name

  1525. we pray

  1526. and ask

  1527. amen

  1528. well I

  1529. trust that as

  1530. we've heard

  1531. God's word

  1532. this morning

  1533. and as

  1534. we've responded

  1535. to it

  1536. individually

  1537. in our

  1538. own

  1539. lives

  1540. that it's

  1541. caused us

  1542. to think

  1543. to stop

  1544. in our

  1545. tracks

  1546. and to

  1547. consider

  1548. both the

  1549. world in

  1550. which we

  1551. live

  1552. and the

  1553. lives that

  1554. we are

  1555. currently

  1556. leading

  1557. our day

  1558. to day

  1559. lives

  1560. let me

  1561. just

  1562. encourage

  1563. you

  1564. if you

  1565. want

  1566. to read

  1567. John's

  1568. gospel

  1569. if you've

  1570. never read

  1571. it before

  1572. and you're

  1573. thinking

  1574. that may be

  1575. something

  1576. you might

  1577. want to

  1578. do

  1579. or you

  1580. can think

  1581. of a

  1582. friend

  1583. or family

  1584. member

  1585. who might

  1586. be interested

  1587. in doing

  1588. that

  1589. let me

  1590. just

  1591. encourage

  1592. you

  1593. to

  1594. consider

  1595. the

  1596. words

  1597. one-to-one

  1598. this is

  1599. John's

  1600. gospel

  1601. is designed

  1602. in a really

  1603. accessible

  1604. format

  1605. to be read

  1606. one-to-one

  1607. with somebody

  1608. with the aim

  1609. of introducing

  1610. them to the

  1611. Jesus that

  1612. we meet

  1613. in the

  1614. Bible

  1615. so if you'd

  1616. be interested

  1617. in that

  1618. again just

  1619. email

  1620. questions

  1621. at

  1622. Brunsfield

  1623. we would

  1624. love to be

  1625. able to

  1626. do that

  1627. with you

  1628. you know

  1629. one of the

  1630. things that

  1631. we've been

  1632. doing over

  1633. the last

  1634. few Sundays

  1635. and has been

  1636. a great

  1637. encouragement

  1638. to many of

  1639. us is to

  1640. hear from

  1641. different people

  1642. in our

  1643. congregation

  1644. and to hear

  1645. them tell us

  1646. their stories

  1647. about how they

  1648. came to meet

  1649. Jesus and

  1650. know him as

  1651. their Lord

  1652. and as their

  1653. king and as

  1654. their saviour

  1655. and what it

  1656. means for them

  1657. to follow him

  1658. be his disciple

  1659. as they live

  1660. their daily

  1661. lives

  1662. and to hear

  1663. a bit about

  1664. what the Lord

  1665. has been teaching

  1666. them during

  1667. this season

  1668. of lockdown

  1669. so I'm

  1670. delighted to

  1671. say we're

  1672. going to

  1673. hear now

  1674. from one

  1675. of our

  1676. members

  1677. called

  1678. Bobby

  1679. and Bobby

  1680. is just

  1681. going to

  1682. tell us a

  1683. little bit

  1684. about his

  1685. story

  1686. and after

  1687. Bobby has

  1688. spoken to

  1689. us we will

  1690. have our

  1691. final song

  1692. hi there

  1693. my name is

  1694. Bobby

  1695. and my

  1696. wife

  1697. Joanna

  1698. and I

  1699. are

  1700. members

  1701. here

  1702. at

  1703. Brunsfield

  1704. in Edinburgh

  1705. I wanted

  1706. to take

  1707. just a

  1708. short amount

  1709. of your

  1710. time to

  1711. let you

  1712. know what

  1713. we've

  1714. learned

  1715. faith-wise

  1716. during the

  1717. lockdown

  1718. and also

  1719. a reminder

  1720. of a story

  1721. that happened

  1722. to us

  1723. about a

  1724. year ago

  1725. which I

  1726. think is

  1727. very relevant

  1728. right now

  1729. now obviously

  1730. we've found

  1731. this time

  1732. a little

  1733. odd

  1734. and I guess

  1735. not exactly

  1736. as we'd

  1737. imagined

  1738. especially

  1739. because we're

  1740. expecting our

  1741. first child

  1742. in around

  1743. a month

  1744. so it's

  1745. been an

  1746. exciting

  1747. time

  1748. but also

  1749. an anxious

  1750. time

  1751. I guess

  1752. like many

  1753. of you

  1754. being stuck

  1755. inside

  1756. one thing

  1757. that's important

  1758. to note

  1759. is that

  1760. we find

  1761. ourselves

  1762. very fortunate

  1763. and blessed

  1764. at the moment

  1765. I've remained

  1766. in work

  1767. and within

  1768. a job

  1769. we haven't

  1770. been furloughed

  1771. we haven't

  1772. lost our

  1773. jobs

  1774. and Joanna

  1775. has been

  1776. safe at

  1777. home

  1778. at the

  1779. moment

  1780. which is

  1781. great

  1782. so I guess

  1783. in the large

  1784. scheme of

  1785. things we

  1786. have very

  1787. few worries

  1788. which we

  1789. can be

  1790. thankful to

  1791. God for

  1792. and this

  1793. uncertain

  1794. time has

  1795. made me

  1796. think a

  1797. little bit

  1798. about

  1799. trust

  1800. what it

  1801. means to

  1802. trust in

  1803. God in

  1804. good times

  1805. and what it

  1806. means to

  1807. trust in

  1808. God in

  1809. bad times

  1810. as well

  1811. or in

  1812. uncertain

  1813. times

  1814. and this

  1815. whole

  1816. situation

  1817. we're in

  1818. has reminded

  1819. me of a

  1820. difficult

  1821. time for

  1822. our family

  1823. which happened

  1824. around this

  1825. time last

  1826. year

  1827. it was

  1828. the day

  1829. before my

  1830. birthday

  1831. and I'd

  1832. woken up to

  1833. about 20

  1834. missed calls

  1835. from my

  1836. mum

  1837. and upon

  1838. calling her

  1839. back she

  1840. said to

  1841. me

  1842. your brother

  1843. is really

  1844. unwell

  1845. your brother

  1846. David

  1847. we think

  1848. he's going

  1849. to die

  1850. and obviously

  1851. this was

  1852. devastating

  1853. he took the

  1854. rug out from

  1855. underneath us

  1856. and what

  1857. happened was

  1858. my brother

  1859. had gone

  1860. into work

  1861. a normal day

  1862. at work

  1863. and soon

  1864. after had

  1865. collapsed

  1866. an infection

  1867. in his tooth

  1868. had spread

  1869. to his heart

  1870. and caused

  1871. the condition

  1872. called endocarditis

  1873. now this

  1874. condition pumps

  1875. blood clots

  1876. around the

  1877. body

  1878. and had

  1879. pumped

  1880. two blood

  1881. clots

  1882. either side

  1883. of his

  1884. head

  1885. which

  1886. subsequently

  1887. had caused

  1888. an aneurysm

  1889. on both sides

  1890. of his head

  1891. so two

  1892. explosions

  1893. within his

  1894. head

  1895. and then

  1896. short after

  1897. in the hospital

  1898. we found out

  1899. that the

  1900. doctors

  1901. the consultants

  1902. the surgeons

  1903. at the Glasgow

  1904. Queen Elizabeth

  1905. told us to

  1906. expect the worst

  1907. that people

  1908. don't survive

  1909. these things

  1910. and that

  1911. if he did

  1912. recover

  1913. which is

  1914. super unlikely

  1915. that they

  1916. don't normally

  1917. see

  1918. that he

  1919. wouldn't be

  1920. himself

  1921. he'd be a

  1922. vegetable

  1923. he'd be

  1924. unresponsive

  1925. and this

  1926. was obviously

  1927. devastating news

  1928. for us

  1929. but it's

  1930. important to

  1931. note that

  1932. the story

  1933. didn't end

  1934. there

  1935. there were

  1936. months of

  1937. prayer

  1938. there were

  1939. months of

  1940. uncertainty

  1941. and heartbreak

  1942. while David

  1943. remained on

  1944. a ventilator

  1945. unresponsive

  1946. we would go

  1947. to visit him

  1948. and there

  1949. would be

  1950. nothing there

  1951. and it

  1952. was hard

  1953. to remain

  1954. positive

  1955. and upbeat

  1956. and hard

  1957. to keep

  1958. trusting God

  1959. during that

  1960. time

  1961. but he

  1962. pulled through

  1963. I'm pleased

  1964. to say

  1965. and rather

  1966. than give

  1967. the full

  1968. story here

  1969. I thought

  1970. it would

  1971. be nice

  1972. if we

  1973. heard from

  1974. David

  1975. directly

  1976. now

  1977. he's got

  1978. a strong

  1979. Glaswegian

  1980. accent

  1981. and speaks

  1982. pretty quickly

  1983. so I thought

  1984. it'd be nice

  1985. to put some

  1986. subtitles below

  1987. because it's

  1988. really important

  1989. that people

  1990. understand his

  1991. story

  1992. firstly

  1993. thanks for

  1994. agreeing to

  1995. do this

  1996. David

  1997. I'm sure

  1998. a lot of

  1999. people at

  2000. Brunsfield

  2001. and in other

  2002. places that have

  2003. been praying for

  2004. you will

  2005. love to put a

  2006. face to the

  2007. name

  2008. I guess

  2009. firstly it's a

  2010. miracle that

  2011. you're here

  2012. right

  2013. I mean the

  2014. doctors didn't

  2015. think you would

  2016. make it

  2017. my brother

  2018. I mean it's

  2019. crazy to think

  2020. that they'd

  2021. written you

  2022. off

  2023. I mean it's

  2024. definitely a

  2025. miracle

  2026. and the

  2027. beard

  2028. am I

  2029. right

  2030. in saying

  2031. that's

  2032. going to

  2033. be

  2034. shaving

  2035. off

  2036. when you

  2037. go back

  2038. to work

  2039. yeah

  2040. you know

  2041. when this

  2042. had all

  2043. first kicked

  2044. off

  2045. and you

  2046. know we'd

  2047. heard what

  2048. happened to

  2049. you

  2050. I didn't

  2051. know what

  2052. to do

  2053. and I'd

  2054. sent a text

  2055. to a few

  2056. people at

  2057. Brunsfield

  2058. telling them

  2059. the situation

  2060. and asking

  2061. for prayer

  2062. and at that

  2063. point you

  2064. know it was

  2065. when the

  2066. doctors said

  2067. that you

  2068. wouldn't

  2069. survive

  2070. so things

  2071. weren't

  2072. looking great

  2073. for you

  2074. how does

  2075. it feel

  2076. that hundreds

  2077. of people

  2078. in Edinburgh

  2079. in Perth

  2080. and around

  2081. the world

  2082. were praying

  2083. for you

  2084. it is humbling

  2085. to just think

  2086. about it

  2087. because it's

  2088. one of the

  2089. ones that I

  2090. don't I

  2091. can't entirely

  2092. sort of

  2093. fathom the

  2094. amount of

  2095. people that

  2096. they've not

  2097. even met me

  2098. they don't

  2099. know me

  2100. but have

  2101. prayed for me

  2102. because they've

  2103. heard so much

  2104. about me

  2105. and all that

  2106. and I think

  2107. that's amazing

  2108. I can't put it

  2109. in the words

  2110. how grateful

  2111. I am that

  2112. these people

  2113. have actually

  2114. taken their

  2115. time out to

  2116. think about me

  2117. and to pray

  2118. for me

  2119. I was in

  2120. death's door

  2121. and it was

  2122. because people

  2123. were praying

  2124. for me

  2125. and people

  2126. were like

  2127. it was

  2128. because of

  2129. that

  2130. that I

  2131. became better

  2132. it's nothing

  2133. to do with

  2134. me

  2135. I was just

  2136. lying around

  2137. my thumb

  2138. for about

  2139. two of

  2140. it was to

  2141. do with

  2142. everyone

  2143. who was

  2144. praying for

  2145. me

  2146. got me

  2147. better

  2148. and brought

  2149. me to

  2150. where I'm

  2151. now

  2152. so it's a

  2153. big thank you

  2154. to each and

  2155. every one of

  2156. them

  2157. yeah

  2158. amazing

  2159. and I

  2160. guess

  2161. what did

  2162. the people

  2163. who had

  2164. looked after

  2165. you early

  2166. on in your

  2167. illness

  2168. think of

  2169. your recovery

  2170. am I right

  2171. in saying

  2172. that you met

  2173. one of the

  2174. nurses

  2175. from early

  2176. on

  2177. you know

  2178. I had

  2179. the

  2180. medicine

  2181. I was in

  2182. with my

  2183. dad

  2184. and it was

  2185. a woman

  2186. who was

  2187. kind of

  2188. looking after

  2189. a few of

  2190. the other

  2191. residents

  2192. or a few

  2193. of the

  2194. patients

  2195. and she

  2196. told me

  2197. to stay

  2198. at me

  2199. for about

  2200. five minutes

  2201. and I was

  2202. around

  2203. and she

  2204. was one

  2205. of the

  2206. nurses

  2207. who was

  2208. there

  2209. when they

  2210. were told

  2211. I wasn't

  2212. going to

  2213. make it

  2214. and she

  2215. she

  2216. would

  2217. phone

  2218. up

  2219. 20

  2220. thousand

  2221. people

  2222. to

  2223. tell

  2224. David

  2225. saw

  2226. out

  2227. basically

  2228. miracle

  2229. well

  2230. thanks for

  2231. taking the

  2232. time David

  2233. it's been

  2234. good

  2235. to interview

  2236. to hear

  2237. just a

  2238. small part

  2239. of your

  2240. journey

  2241. and your

  2242. story

  2243. so thanks

  2244. for taking

  2245. the time

  2246. to do

  2247. this

  2248. not a

  2249. problem

  2250. now from

  2251. that short

  2252. interview with

  2253. David

  2254. it's clear

  2255. that God

  2256. had answered

  2257. our prayer

  2258. David's living

  2259. proof of

  2260. that

  2261. but thinking

  2262. back to the

  2263. time

  2264. it was hard

  2265. for us as a

  2266. family to

  2267. trust in God

  2268. we had so

  2269. many questions

  2270. why is this

  2271. happening God

  2272. but ultimately

  2273. I think we knew

  2274. that God was in

  2275. control

  2276. and for Joanna

  2277. and I

  2278. the faith

  2279. and the trust

  2280. that my mum

  2281. and my stepdad

  2282. Robert had in

  2283. God during

  2284. this time

  2285. was really

  2286. inspiring

  2287. you know

  2288. and this whole

  2289. situation proved

  2290. to me that

  2291. you know

  2292. if God was at

  2293. work then

  2294. he can still

  2295. be at work

  2296. now

  2297. he can answer

  2298. prayers now

  2299. and he can be

  2300. with us

  2301. he can be with

  2302. you in a

  2303. difficult situation

  2304. now

  2305. just like he

  2306. was with us

  2307. last year

  2308. so

  2309. trust in God

  2310. and remember

  2311. that prayer

  2312. works and that

  2313. he still

  2314. answers prayers

  2315. may be

  2316. you

  2317. you

  2318. you

  2319. you
