  1. Good morning everyone. I'm Ian and our first Bible reading is Psalm 130, which was originally sung by pilgrims going to the temple in Jerusalem.

  2. Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord. Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.

  3. If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?

  4. But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

  5. I wait for the Lord. My whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope.

  6. I wait for the Lord. More than watchmen wait for the morning.

  7. More than watchmen wait for the morning.

  8. Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love, and with him is full redemption.

  9. He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.

  10. Hello, church. My name is Lisa, and I'll be bringing us our second reading today, which is from the book of John, chapter 7, verse 53, through to chapter 8, verse 11.

    John 7:53

  11. After the reading, I will invite you to join me in prayer before David brings us his sermon.

  12. So, John, chapter 7, verse 53.

    John 7:53

  13. Then each went to his own home, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

  14. At dawn, he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered round him, and he sat down to teach them.

  15. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery.

  16. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus,

  17. Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.

  18. In the law, Moses commanded us to stone such woman.

  19. Now, what do you say?

  20. They were using this question as a trap in order to have a basis for accusing him.

  21. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.

  22. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them,

  23. If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.

  24. Again, he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

  25. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first,

  26. until only Jesus was left with the woman still standing there.

  27. Jesus straightened up and asked her,

  28. Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?

  29. No one, sir, she said.

  30. Then neither do I condemn you, Jesus declared.

  31. Go now and leave your life of sin.

  32. Let us pray.

  33. Father God, as we draw around your word today,

  34. my prayer is that each of us would learn more of who Jesus is

  35. and the love he showers on every individual,

  36. regardless of how broken they are.

  37. I pray that you would use David for your heavenly purposes as he preaches today

  38. and that the message he brings us would be centred on the truth of the gospel

  39. and that it would resonate with all who are listening,

  40. regardless of where they are in their journey.

  41. Be near to us all, I pray.

  42. Amen.

  43. I wonder, do any of you have friends who are pranksters?

  44. The famous novelist Mark Twain seems to have been one.

  45. He once decided to play a trick on a dozen of his friends.

  46. He arranged for each of them to receive a telegram that bore this simple message.

  47. Flee at once.

  48. All is discovered.

  49. Twain reports that upon receiving this telegram,

  50. all 12 of them left town immediately.

  51. Now, it's a funny story, but it also raises some serious questions.

  52. What were they so afraid of?

  53. What did they have to hide?

  54. You may not be like Mark Twain, the prankster,

  55. but I suspect that there might be something of those 12 friends in each of us.

  56. Imagine for a second that you, one morning, wake up,

  57. you check the post and you find there's a letter.

  58. You open up the letter and you see that there is a message written on nice fancy notepaper.

  59. The message reads,

  60. All is discovered.

  61. Flee.

  62. What comes into your mind that that could possibly be referring to in your life,

  63. in your business?

  64. I suspect that all of us, if we're honest,

  65. have some skeletons or at least a bone or two lurking in the back of our closets.

  66. Things that we've locked away.

  67. Things that we've tried to forget about.

  68. Things that we've hoped no one will ever discover and find out about us.

  69. Nevertheless, the Bible tells us that there is someone who sees all things.

  70. Who knows about all the things that have happened behind closed doors and in the secret places.

  71. Someone who is not deceived by any of our cover-ups.

  72. He is God.

  73. But he's also the only one who can help us.

  74. The goodness I've got to share with you this morning is that if you ever wonder,

  75. could an almighty and holy God love me after what I've said,

  76. after what I've thought,

  77. after what I've done or not done,

  78. then the answer can be found in John's gospel.

  79. If you ever want to know what God is like,

  80. what God thinks,

  81. then all you have to do is look at the person of Jesus,

  82. who is the face and the heart of God,

  83. fleshed out for all the world to see.

  84. Today we're going to be looking at a passage in John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  85. It's the famous story of Jesus' encounter with a woman caught in adultery.

  86. To help us get inside this story

  87. and to witness the wonderful way that Jesus relates to a sinner

  88. who has been just caught in the act,

  89. I'm going to preach this message to you as a narrative sermon.

  90. That means that we're going to imagine that we're listening to someone who was there that day,

  91. someone in the crowd,

  92. and we're going to take that person's first person perspective

  93. and hear what they heard

  94. and see what they saw.

  95. The next voice that you hear in a moment

  96. will be the voice of someone,

  97. one of the men who was in the crowd that day.

  98. That day is still crystal clear in my memory.

  99. I was there in the temple courtyard with Jesus.

  100. Not as a Jesus follower.

  101. In those days,

  102. I was a Jesus hater.

  103. He was infuriating.

  104. Going around calling himself the Son of God.

  105. Maybe if he had stuck to the title Messiah,

  106. then we could have lived with that.

  107. But he dared to make himself equal with God,

  108. calling God his Father.

  109. That was blasphemy to my Jewish ears.

  110. After all, every day we recite the Shema from Deuteronomy.

  111. Shema'i Israel.

  112. Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad.

  113. Hear, O Israel,

  114. the Lord our God,

  115. the Lord is one.

  116. Even my kids knew that

  117. from the very first day of Sabbath school in the synagogue.

  118. Who did Jesus think he was?

  119. There was something else deeply unsettling about Jesus.

  120. Whenever you spent time around him,

  121. you came away feeling dirty, unclean.

  122. He always showed you up like a white glove

  123. that's just being rubbed over the top of your wardrobe.

  124. It's not that Jesus pranced around

  125. pretending to be holier than thou.

  126. Leave that to the Pharisees.

  127. They had that covered.

  128. It was instead that Jesus just

  129. radiated holiness effortlessly.

  130. I disciplined myself for a lifetime of

  131. Torah obeying,

  132. Sabbath keeping,

  133. tithe giving,

  134. kosher eating.

  135. But it all felt so empty,

  136. so inadequate compared with Jesus.

  137. What did he have

  138. that we didn't have?

  139. After two and a half years of that,

  140. many of us were fed up.

  141. We'd had enough.

  142. We were determined to put an end to Jesus,

  143. to silence him

  144. one way or another.

  145. We had to find some way to catch him out

  146. and destroy him.

  147. And that's when we found out about her.

  148. I didn't know her name.

  149. She was nothing to me.

  150. She was disposable,

  151. a means to an end.

  152. Our wives had heard the gossip

  153. on the grapevine

  154. of a local woman engaged

  155. in an adulterous affair.

  156. And so as we schemed and plotted,

  157. she became the bait

  158. for our trap to ensnare Jesus.

  159. Then the fateful day came

  160. when we knew that this woman

  161. could be found

  162. in an illicit rendezvous

  163. with her lover.

  164. As soon as our lookouts

  165. give the signal,

  166. signal we got to work,

  167. breaking in through the door.

  168. We took them by surprise.

  169. Without a moment to think

  170. or hide or run,

  171. we grabbed her.

  172. We dragged her through the streets,

  173. kicking up dust in the air,

  174. screaming at the top of her lungs

  175. for someone to help her.

  176. As we dragged her through

  177. the marketplace,

  178. she was humiliated

  179. in the eyes of her friends,

  180. her neighbors,

  181. her family.

  182. People started to shout

  183. slurs at her.

  184. Her state of undress

  185. revealed just what kind of woman

  186. she really was.

  187. Arriving in the temple courtyard,

  188. we marched straight up to Jesus

  189. and we threw her headfirst

  190. down at his feet.

  191. Then we formed

  192. an impenetrable ring

  193. around the two of them.

  194. There was going to be no way

  195. for them to escape.

  196. Not either of them.

  197. The trap was set.

  198. We were ready.

  199. A few of us had even brought along

  200. our own stones

  201. for the occasion.

  202. Jesus looked around at us

  203. as if he was demanding

  204. we explain the reason

  205. for all the commotion.

  206. And so one of the scribes

  207. spoke up,

  208. Teacher,

  209. this woman has been caught

  210. in the act of adultery.

  211. At this there was a hiss

  212. from the crowd

  213. caused her to hide her face

  214. in shame and terror.

  215. And then our spokesperson

  216. pressed his attack

  217. against Jesus.

  218. Now in the law,

  219. Moses commanded us

  220. to stone such women.

  221. But what do you say,

  222. Jesus?

  223. Silence descended.

  224. The dust in the air

  225. began to settle

  226. and every eye

  227. was on Jesus.

  228. What would he do next?

  229. In that tense moment

  230. I rubbed my hands with glee.

  231. We had got him.

  232. We had caught him

  233. between a rock

  234. and a hard place.

  235. He acts like he's

  236. the world's greatest

  237. humanitarian.

  238. Healing the sick,

  239. showing compassion

  240. to the poor,

  241. drinking and eating

  242. with tax collectors

  243. and sinners.

  244. Yet he also claims

  245. he's the son of God.

  246. The word of God

  247. in human form.

  248. And our test

  249. was going to play

  250. those two things

  251. off against each other.

  252. If in compassion

  253. Jesus sided with this woman

  254. over and against

  255. the word and law of God,

  256. well so much for his claim

  257. to be the son of God.

  258. However,

  259. if instead he endorsed

  260. the law of God

  261. and called for her

  262. to be killed,

  263. well then he was

  264. defying Rome

  265. and Rome's prohibition

  266. against us

  267. executing anyone.

  268. Either way,

  269. discredited in Jewish eyes

  270. or dangerous in Roman eyes,

  271. surely Jesus was finished.

  272. But as we waited

  273. with bated breath

  274. for him to reply,

  275. Jesus did something

  276. rather unexpected.

  277. He bent down

  278. and began to write

  279. in the sand.

  280. The crowd started

  281. to murmur.

  282. People started pushing

  283. and jostling to see

  284. and I'm not the tallest

  285. of people.

  286. I was at the back

  287. of the crowd.

  288. I couldn't quite see

  289. what he was writing.

  290. In the years since,

  291. I've often wondered

  292. what was he writing?

  293. Was it perhaps

  294. the law,

  295. the Ten Commandments

  296. that he was writing

  297. out with his finger,

  298. literally preparing

  299. the ground

  300. for what came next?

  301. Or perhaps did he write

  302. out the words

  303. of Leviticus chapter 20

    Leviticus 20:20

  304. verse 20?

  305. If a man commits adultery

  306. with another man's wife,

  307. both the adulterer

  308. and the adulteress

  309. are to be put to death.

  310. You see,

  311. the law recognizes

  312. that it takes two

  313. to tango.

  314. We were acting unjustly

  315. by condemning this woman

  316. while we had let

  317. the man off the hook.

  318. Or maybe,

  319. just maybe,

  320. Jesus was just doodling.

  321. Wouldn't put it past him.

  322. Either way,

  323. what mattered

  324. was not what Jesus wrote,

  325. but rather,

  326. where he was

  327. as he wrote.

  328. You see,

  329. Jesus was kneeling

  330. down on the ground.

  331. He was down

  332. on the same level

  333. as that woman.

  334. He was in close proximity

  335. to her

  336. as she cowered in fear.

  337. It was as if he was

  338. reassuring her

  339. with his presence,

  340. you're not alone.

  341. I'm here with you.

  342. You don't have

  343. to be afraid.

  344. Jesus had made himself

  345. her personal shield

  346. and defender.

  347. While we looked down

  348. on this woman

  349. with moral condescension

  350. and condemnation,

  351. Jesus instead

  352. physically condescended

  353. to her

  354. to show her

  355. mercy

  356. and grace.

  357. And then Jesus

  358. suddenly turned

  359. the tables on us.

  360. Decisively,

  361. he stood up for her

  362. as her advocate,

  363. this nameless voice,

  364. this powerless woman,

  365. fearlessly looking us

  366. in the eyes.

  367. He issued the challenge.

  368. Let him who is

  369. without sin among you

  370. be the first

  371. to throw a stone

  372. against her.

  373. A shiver went down

  374. my spine.

  375. It seemed to shudder

  376. through the whole crowd.

  377. Those words pierced us

  378. through with conviction.

  379. Sure,

  380. we all try to be

  381. good people,

  382. but none of us

  383. could pretend

  384. to be perfect.

  385. But even more unnerving

  386. was the look

  387. in his eyes.

  388. It was like he was

  389. reading us

  390. like a scroll,

  391. shining a light

  392. into the darkest

  393. recesses of our minds

  394. and our hearts.

  395. And I remember

  396. how he looked at me

  397. in that moment.

  398. In that moment,

  399. I felt so naked

  400. and ashamed.

  401. I was exposed.

  402. It was as if Jesus

  403. could see through

  404. my righteous exterior

  405. and he could search

  406. the darkest recesses

  407. of my mind.

  408. All of my past

  409. sins and shames,

  410. they were all exposed

  411. to in his sight.

  412. The scriptures tell us

  413. in Psalm 44

  414. that only God

  415. knows the secret

  416. things of the heart.

  417. And yet here was Jesus

  418. and he seemed

  419. to be able to know

  420. the things

  421. that only God

  422. could know.

  423. All the times

  424. I've looked at a woman,

  425. not lovingly,

  426. but lustfully,

  427. wanting to use her

  428. for my own gratification.

  429. All the times

  430. in my imagination

  431. when I've mentally

  432. undressed a woman

  433. as she passed by

  434. in the street.

  435. All the times

  436. when I've compared

  437. and preferred

  438. other women

  439. to my wife.

  440. Somehow,

  441. Jesus could see it all.

  442. And in Jesus' sight,

  443. I was exposed.

  444. Suddenly,

  445. it came back

  446. into my mind

  447. what I had read

  448. in the news papyrus

  449. some years before,

  450. a quote from Jesus

  451. in his sermon

  452. on the mount.

  453. At the time I dismissed it,

  454. it just sounded like

  455. some more crazy,

  456. extreme Jesus talk.

  457. But now I had

  458. new insight

  459. into his words.

  460. You've heard it said,

  461. you shall not

  462. commit adultery.

  463. But I say to you

  464. that everyone

  465. who looks at a woman

  466. with lustful intent

  467. has already committed

  468. adultery with her

  469. in his heart.

  470. It began to dawn on me

  471. in that moment

  472. that in God's sight

  473. I was no better than her,

  474. that I was as much

  475. a sexual sinner

  476. as she was.

  477. You have a saying

  478. in your country,

  479. don't you,

  480. that people who live

  481. in glass houses

  482. shouldn't throw stones?

  483. Well, here I was

  484. with a stone in my hand

  485. ready to throw it at her.

  486. But suddenly,

  487. the strength to throw it

  488. had ebbed away

  489. out of my arm.

  490. It was weighed down

  491. with guilt.

  492. That stone had

  493. my name on it,

  494. not hers.

  495. Having said

  496. all that needed

  497. to be said,

  498. Jesus then

  499. bent down again

  500. and resumed

  501. drawing in the sand.

  502. All around

  503. with disgruntled murmurs,

  504. the crowd began

  505. to disperse.

  506. First,

  507. some of the old boys

  508. slinked off,

  509. perhaps because

  510. the longer you've lived,

  511. the more regrets

  512. you have to look back on

  513. and remember.

  514. I didn't want to be

  515. the first to admit defeat,

  516. but neither did I want

  517. to be the last

  518. standing around

  519. looking like an idiot.

  520. And so I retreated too,

  521. finding a nearby pillar

  522. in the courtyard I hid,

  523. embarrassed,

  524. ashamed,

  525. convicted.

  526. But I was still close enough

  527. to hear what happened next.

  528. After we'd all left,

  529. Jesus looked up.

  530. He and the woman

  531. were now left alone.

  532. Like a good rabbi

  533. sees in a teachable moment,

  534. he asked her a question.

  535. Woman,

  536. where are they?

  537. Has no one condemned you?

  538. At first,

  539. all she could do

  540. was sob.

  541. And when she

  542. found the breath

  543. to speak,

  544. she just sounded like

  545. someone waking up

  546. from a horrible nightmare.

  547. She couldn't believe

  548. it herself.

  549. She replied,

  550. no one, Lord.

  551. But perhaps there was

  552. a lingering question

  553. in her mind.

  554. What was Jesus

  555. going to do

  556. with her?

  557. If anyone

  558. was sinless,

  559. if anyone

  560. was justified

  561. to condemn her,

  562. surely it was him.

  563. But without a pause,

  564. Jesus delivered

  565. his verdict

  566. in a voice

  567. that sounded like

  568. the judge

  569. of the living

  570. and the dead.

  571. He said,

  572. neither do I condemn you.

  573. Now go

  574. and sin no more.

  575. Her face lit up.

  576. Her death sentence

  577. was pardoned.

  578. A fresh start

  579. in life

  580. had been granted.

  581. Like King Solomon

  582. of old,

  583. Jesus had rendered

  584. his judgment

  585. with the perfect balance

  586. of grace

  587. and truth.

  588. He didn't minimize

  589. her sin

  590. and yet he urged

  591. her to live

  592. in grateful repentance.

  593. But although

  594. Jesus let her go,

  595. that didn't mean

  596. that he let her sin go.

  597. I didn't realize

  598. that at the time.

  599. But with the benefit

  600. of hindsight,

  601. now I see that

  602. what Jesus did

  603. that day,

  604. the reason why

  605. Jesus was able

  606. to say,

  607. neither do I condemn you

  608. and let her go,

  609. was because Jesus

  610. was willing to stay

  611. behind and be condemned

  612. in her place

  613. and satisfy the demands

  614. of the law

  615. that she had broken.

  616. You see,

  617. that day in the temple

  618. courtyards was just

  619. a little preview

  620. of the events

  621. that would follow

  622. just months down the road

  623. at the next Passover.

  624. When Jesus risked

  625. his life bending down

  626. and drawing alongside

  627. that condemned woman,

  628. it was a rehearsal

  629. of all that he had come

  630. to do for all of us.

  631. Now I see that

  632. in coming down

  633. into this world

  634. as a human,

  635. God was coming down

  636. onto our level.

  637. He was drawing

  638. alongside us

  639. as the friend,

  640. not the judge of sinners.

  641. Now I see that

  642. Jesus condemned

  643. to death on the cross.

  644. He was dying

  645. in our place,

  646. suffering the penalty

  647. that we deserve

  648. so that we might live.

  649. Now I see that

  650. Jesus died

  651. and rose again

  652. not only to save

  653. this adulterous woman,

  654. but to save

  655. a hypocrite like me.

  656. And if there's hope

  657. for her,

  658. then there's hope

  659. for me.

  660. There's hope

  661. for all of us.

  662. Now many years later

  663. as an old man

  664. I need to tell my story

  665. one last time.

  666. It's too good

  667. to be forgotten

  668. in the sands of time.

  669. That day in the temple

  670. with Jesus

  671. changed my life forever.

  672. And now as I come

  673. to the end

  674. of life's journey,

  675. I know that he

  676. who waits for me

  677. beyond death's door

  678. waits to greet me

  679. with those same sweet words

  680. that I heard that day.

  681. I do not condemn you.

  682. My regrets

  683. cannot imprison me

  684. to the grave.

  685. My sins cannot

  686. sink me down to hell.

  687. For I have a saviour

  688. in Jesus

  689. who has saved me

  690. from all my sins.

  691. And I pray that my story

  692. will help you too.

  693. Although your life

  694. in this world

  695. will be marked

  696. by ups and downs,

  697. joys and regrets,

  698. successes and shames,

  699. I pray that you will

  700. take hold of Jesus' promise too.

  701. For God so loved the world

  702. that he gave us

  703. his one and only son,

  704. that whoever believes

  705. in him should not perish

  706. but have eternal life.

  707. For God did not

  708. come into the world

  709. to condemn the world,

  710. but so that the world

  711. might be saved through him.

  712. That's my story.

  713. Shalom and amen.
