  1. John chapter 9 verses 1 to 12. As he went along he saw a man blind from birth.

    John 9:1–12

  2. His disciples asked him, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?

  3. Neither this man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

  4. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me.

  5. Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

  6. After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva and put it on the man's eyes.

  7. Go, he told him, washing the pool of Siloam, this word means sent.

  8. So the man went and washed and came home seeing.

  9. His neighbours and those who had formerly seen him begging asked,

  10. Isn't this the same man who used to sit and beg?

  11. Some claimed that he was.

  12. Others said, No, he only looks like him.

  13. But he himself insisted, I am the man.

  14. How then were your eyes opened, they asked.

  15. He replied, The man they called Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes.

  16. He told me to go to Siloam and wash.

  17. So I went and washed and then I could see.

  18. Where is this man, they asked him.

  19. I don't know, he said.

  20. They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.

  21. Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man's eyes was a Sabbath.

  22. Therefore, the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.

  23. He put mud on my eyes, the man replied.

  24. And I washed and now I see.

  25. Some of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.

  26. But others asked, How can a sinner perform such signs?

  27. So they were divided.

  28. Then they turned again to the blind man.

  29. What had you to say about him?

  30. It was your eyes he opened.

  31. The man replied, He is a prophet.

  32. They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received the sight until they sent for the man's parents.

  33. Is this your son?

  34. They asked.

  35. Is this the one you say was born blind?

  36. How is it that he can now see?

  37. We know he is our son, the parents answered.

  38. And we know he was born blind.

  39. But how he can see or who opened his eyes, we don't know.

  40. Ask him.

  41. He is of age.

  42. He will speak for himself.

  43. His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders,

  44. who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.

  45. That was why his parents said, He is of age.

  46. Ask him.

  47. The second time they summoned the man who had been blind.

  48. Give glory to God by telling the truth, they said.

  49. We know this man is a sinner.

  50. He replied, Whether he is a sinner or not, I don't know.

  51. One thing I do know, I was blind but now I see.

  52. Then they asked him, What did he do to you?

  53. How did he open your eyes?

  54. He answered, I've told you already and you do not listen.

  55. Why do you want to hear it again?

  56. Do you want to become his disciples too?

  57. Then they hurled insults at him and said, You are this fellow's disciple.

  58. We are disciples of Moses.

  59. We know that God spoke to Moses.

  60. But as for this fellow, we don't even know where he is coming from.

  61. The man answered, Now that is remarkable.

  62. You don't know where he comes from.

  63. Yet he opened my eyes.

  64. We know that God does not listen to sinners.

  65. He listens to the godly person who does his will.

  66. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.

  67. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.

  68. To this they replied, You were steeped in sin at birth.

  69. How dare you lecture us.

  70. And they threw him out.

  71. Jesus heard that they had thrown him out.

  72. And when he found him, he said, Do you believe in the Son of Man?

  73. Who is he, sir?

  74. The man asked.

  75. Tell me so that I may believe in him.

  76. Jesus said, You have now seen him.

  77. In fact, he is the one speaking with you.

  78. Then the man said, Lord, I believe.

  79. And he worshipped him.

  80. Jesus said, For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see, and those who see will become blind.

  81. Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, What, are we blind too?

  82. Jesus said, If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin.

  83. But now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.

  84. Shall we just pray?

  85. Lord, we come before you now.

  86. We thank you for the means to meet together in an online way.

  87. And despite the fact that we are distanced physically, we can still gather together around your word, which unites us.

  88. We thank you for the people who make it possible for these sermons to go ahead and for the skills that you give them.

  89. And we thank you for these words, that your son came so that the blind might see.

  90. Lord, would you open our eyes to what you are saying to us today?

  91. We ask that Alistair's sermon will speak to us all, that your words through him will teach us, encourage us, and point us to Christ in whom salvation is found.

  92. We ask all these things in Jesus' name. Amen.

  93. Good morning, everyone.

  94. My name is Alistair, and I have the privilege of being the assistant pastor here at Brunsfield.

  95. And it is my joy this morning to open up John chapter 9 to us.

    John 9 chapter mention

  96. But let me just start with a little bit of an observation.

  97. I'm sure some of us have really enjoyed the good weather that we've been having during this time of lockdown,

  98. particularly in the months of April and May.

  99. The sun has been shining, the shorts and the t-shirt have been on,

  100. and maybe you even enjoyed a walk in the park, or you enjoyed soaking up the sun in the garden.

  101. But my wife Sabina and I have found something quite interesting about the sun during this lockdown period.

  102. So during our normal Scottish weather of overcast clouds and grey-tinted skies,

  103. we can look out our windows and see clearly the wind blowing the trees to and fro.

  104. We can look down and see our neighbours running to get out of the rain.

  105. But during the sunny days of lockdown,

  106. we've realised that our windows aren't actually as clean as we thought they were.

  107. The sun has revealed that our windows are full of dirt and dust.

  108. Now without the light revealing this dirt, we would be none the wiser.

  109. But when the light shines on the windows, it reveals the extent of dirt that's there.

  110. The sun reveals things.

  111. But at the same time, the sun can be blinding.

  112. For example, you can be driving down the motorway, going 70 miles per hour,

  113. and suddenly that one cloud moves out the way, shooting that sunbeam directly at your eyes.

  114. And it takes you a second to pull down the sun flap or put on your sunglasses.

  115. The sun can both reveal and it can blind.

  116. Now we all know this.

  117. It's not any rocket science.

  118. But it's very relevant for the passage that we're looking at this morning in John chapter 9.

    John 9 chapter mention

  119. Because in this passage, Jesus is reiterating the truth about himself that he mentioned in John 8 verse 12.

    John 8:12

  120. Where Jesus said this,

  121. And Jesus says the same thing in our passage for this morning in verse 5.

  122. I am the light of the world.

  123. This seems like a small detail in quite a long passage.

  124. So why am I drawing attention to it now?

  125. Well, because the identity of Jesus as the light of the world is fundamental to our understanding of this passage.

  126. This chapter tells us when the light shines,

  127. some people are made to see,

  128. whilst others are blinded.

  129. The light is the same,

  130. but the reactions to it,

  131. the effects of that light are very different.

  132. Just as the sun can both reveal and blind,

  133. so too does Jesus,

  134. the light of the world,

  135. when shone into the darkness,

  136. reveal the truth to some

  137. and blind others.

  138. Jesus says that himself in John chapter 9 verse 39.

    John 9:39

  139. For judgment I have come into this world,

  140. so that the blind will see,

  141. and those who see will become blind.

  142. So we're going to see in this passage

  143. how the blind receive sight,

  144. and how the seeing are made blind.

  145. We're going to be jumping in and out of the passage this morning,

  146. so it would be great if you have your Bible open in front of you

  147. to follow along.

  148. So the first thing we see in this passage

  149. is the blind receive sight.

  150. The blind receive sight.

  151. In verse 1,

  152. we see that Jesus is walking along,

  153. and he sees a man who's been blind from birth.

  154. And Jesus' disciples ask in verse 2,

  155. Rabbi, who sinned?

  156. This man?

  157. Or his parents that he was born blind?

  158. The disciples assume,

  159. like many people did at that time,

  160. that sin and suffering are connected.

  161. And that is a right assumption to make to an extent.

  162. The Bible says that our bodies,

  163. our world,

  164. and everything in it has been stained,

  165. and broken by sin.

  166. So in general terms,

  167. sin and suffering are connected.

  168. But when we move from the general principle

  169. of suffering and sin,

  170. and apply that same truth

  171. to individuals,

  172. and to very specific

  173. and bad situations,

  174. and say that they result from a specific sin,

  175. we're going beyond what the Bible teaches.

  176. In many cases,

  177. we don't know why we suffer.

  178. And God's intention

  179. is hidden from us.

  180. But we cannot,

  181. and we should not,

  182. conclude that every suffering

  183. is a result of a specific sin.

  184. That is a dangerous road to take.

  185. And it can hurt many people.

  186. And it is simply not what the Bible says.

  187. In most cases,

  188. suffering is not the result of a specific sin.

  189. Sometimes we might not even know

  190. the reason for our sufferings.

  191. There is no point on us speculating.

  192. That's true in the case of this blind man.

  193. His blindness was not a result of sin.

  194. But Jesus tells us the purpose

  195. behind this man's blindness in verse 3.

  196. Jesus says,

  197. Neither this man nor his parents sinned,

  198. but this happened so that

  199. the works of God might be displayed in him.

  200. The purpose of this man's blindness

  201. was so that the works of God

  202. may be seen and revealed.

  203. That's what Jesus has come to do.

  204. To reveal the works of God.

  205. That is what he says in verses 4 and 5.

  206. Jesus has come into the world,

  207. and whilst he is still with them,

  208. with his disciples,

  209. this light must be shown to the entire world.

  210. Jesus sees this man who is physically blind,

  211. and through an amazing miracle in verse 6,

  212. he puts mud and spit on his eyes,

  213. sends him to a pool to wash,

  214. and he is healed.

  215. What a wonderful miracle.

  216. This blind man can suddenly see

  217. for the first time in his life.

  218. His whole life has been completely changed.

  219. He was a beggar.

  220. He had no possibility to work.

  221. Bound to a life on the street,

  222. asking for money,

  223. depending on other people.

  224. No hope of getting better

  225. until Jesus comes

  226. and turns his life upside down.

  227. Imagine for a second that walk home.

  228. Imagine his joy,

  229. being able to see for the very first time.

  230. He can look up and see the sun,

  231. which up until now has only warmed his face.

  232. He can see the birds flying,

  233. the trees swaying in the breeze.

  234. He can see his parents' face

  235. for the first time.

  236. Suddenly, the world takes on a whole new light

  237. because his eyes have been opened

  238. and he can see.

  239. He would have been skipping home with joy.

  240. So that's the physical side of it.

  241. But there is also a spiritual revealing of sight

  242. that happens to this man.

  243. As we journey through the passage,

  244. he understands more and more of who Jesus is.

  245. And then we see another miracle.

  246. Not only has this man received his sight,

  247. but at the very end of the passage,

  248. in verse 38,

  249. we see that he receives spiritual sight.

  250. The identity of Jesus is revealed to him

  251. and he worships.

  252. Well, this isn't a light bulb, isolated moment

  253. where he suddenly sees Jesus

  254. and falls on his face in adoration.

  255. He comes to the conclusion of who Jesus is

  256. by miraculously receiving his sight

  257. and by coming up against severe opposition.

  258. So in verse 7,

  259. the man washes at the well and is healed.

  260. He goes home

  261. and his neighbors are confused

  262. because they've only ever known him

  263. as the blind man.

  264. And so they ask in verse 10,

  265. how then were your eyes opened?

  266. He responds,

  267. the man they called Jesus

  268. made me,

  269. made some mud and put it on my eyes.

  270. He told me to go to Siloam

  271. and wash.

  272. So I went and washed

  273. and then I could see.

  274. Currently,

  275. he sees Jesus as a man.

  276. But as we travel through this chapter,

  277. this blind man

  278. is met with opposition

  279. from religious leaders

  280. and he's growing in his understanding

  281. of who Jesus is.

  282. In verse 11,

  283. he calls Jesus a man.

  284. In verse 17,

  285. he says that Jesus is a prophet,

  286. a spokesperson

  287. sent from God

  288. to deliver his message

  289. and to do his works.

  290. And then,

  291. in verse 33,

  292. he says that Jesus is from God.

  293. This man's eyes

  294. are being opened wider.

  295. He's beginning to see more clearly.

  296. And it comes to a conclusion

  297. in verses 35 to 38.

  298. In verse 35,

  299. Jesus goes out

  300. searching for this man.

  301. Now,

  302. do you see

  303. the amazing grace,

  304. the abounding love

  305. and compassion

  306. that Jesus has

  307. for this man?

  308. This man has just been

  309. kicked out

  310. from the Jewish community,

  311. excommunicated

  312. from the religious establishment

  313. that he's known

  314. his whole life.

  315. And Jesus seeks him out

  316. in his pain,

  317. in his confusion

  318. and finds him.

  319. Jesus has compassion

  320. for the whole person.

  321. He brought physical healing.

  322. But Jesus

  323. is also interested

  324. in this man's

  325. spiritual state

  326. before God.

  327. For this man

  328. to truly

  329. receive his sight,

  330. he must believe

  331. in Jesus

  332. and follow him.

  333. Jesus,

  334. full of compassion,

  335. searches for

  336. and finds this man.

  337. And asks him

  338. in verse 35,

  339. do you believe

  340. in the son of man?

  341. A name that

  342. speaks of Jesus'

  343. identity as God

  344. and his identity

  345. as the one

  346. who will judge

  347. the world.

  348. The blind man,

  349. having never seen

  350. Jesus up until

  351. this point,

  352. asks,

  353. well,

  354. who is this

  355. son of man?

  356. And Jesus says

  357. in verse 38,

  358. you have now

  359. seen him.

  360. In fact,

  361. he is the one

  362. speaking with you.

  363. This man has received

  364. his physical sight,

  365. but now

  366. he understands

  367. who Jesus is.

  368. He grasps

  369. what exactly

  370. has happened

  371. to him

  372. and who it is

  373. that stands

  374. before him.

  375. And he receives

  376. spiritual sight.

  377. upon realizing

  378. who Jesus is,

  379. this man cannot

  380. help but have

  381. the right response

  382. to Jesus.

  383. He responds

  384. in adoration,

  385. confesses Jesus

  386. as Lord

  387. and worships him.

  388. If you're a Christian

  389. this morning,

  390. this should be

  391. our response

  392. every single time

  393. we ponder the person

  394. of Jesus Christ,

  395. who displays

  396. the wonderful

  397. works of God

  398. to the world.

  399. We should worship

  400. him in adoration.

  401. Maybe you're familiar

  402. with this passage.

  403. Maybe you've read it

  404. a hundred times.

  405. Maybe you've become

  406. numb

  407. to the wondrous

  408. works of God

  409. that Jesus displays.

  410. Well,

  411. I'd encourage you

  412. to look at this passage

  413. and to look at Jesus

  414. afresh

  415. and marvel

  416. at his wonderful

  417. works.

  418. Rejoice in the fact

  419. that you too

  420. have

  421. received

  422. spiritual sight.

  423. That the

  424. wonderful works

  425. of God

  426. have been revealed

  427. to you.

  428. We see who Jesus

  429. truly is.

  430. Rejoice that we've

  431. been brought out

  432. of the darkness

  433. and into the light.

  434. We worship

  435. a Savior

  436. who is

  437. compassionate

  438. and who

  439. pursues

  440. people

  441. and who

  442. calls us

  443. to be lights

  444. in the world.

  445. Therefore,

  446. we too

  447. should pursue

  448. people with

  449. compassion.

  450. Help

  451. practically

  452. where we can

  453. in situations,

  454. but we should

  455. always be willing

  456. and ready

  457. to share

  458. the good news

  459. of Jesus

  460. so that they

  461. too

  462. can receive

  463. spiritual sight.

  464. That they

  465. can recognize

  466. Jesus

  467. and respond

  468. to him

  469. in worship.

  470. Friends,

  471. that is the

  472. right response

  473. to Jesus.

  474. The journey

  475. that this blind

  476. man has been

  477. on is the

  478. same journey

  479. that many

  480. of us

  481. have been

  482. on through

  483. already in

  484. life.

  485. we heard

  486. about Jesus

  487. maybe from

  488. an early

  489. age,

  490. maybe as

  491. an adult,

  492. and we

  493. read stories

  494. of what

  495. he did

  496. and what

  497. he taught,

  498. and maybe

  499. we thought

  500. that he

  501. was a good

  502. guy,

  503. a good

  504. moral teacher.

  505. But as

  506. his light

  507. is revealed,

  508. as we see

  509. his miracles,

  510. we hear more

  511. about his

  512. teaching,

  513. we must

  514. conclude

  515. that he

  516. is sent

  517. from God.

  518. Some

  519. confess

  520. Jesus

  521. as a

  522. prophet,

  523. but if

  524. we stop

  525. there,

  526. we have

  527. completely

  528. missed the

  529. mark.

  530. Because

  531. once we

  532. hear about

  533. how Jesus

  534. died

  535. on the

  536. cross to

  537. make

  538. forgiveness

  539. of sins

  540. possible,

  541. and how

  542. he rose

  543. triumphant

  544. from the

  545. grave,

  546. and that

  547. he is now

  548. seated at

  549. the right

  550. hand of

  551. God the

  552. Father,

  553. we cannot

  554. come to

  555. any other

  556. conclusion

  557. than Jesus

  558. is Lord,

  559. and we

  560. must humble

  561. ourselves and

  562. worship him.

  563. Have your

  564. eyes been

  565. opened this

  566. morning,

  567. or are you

  568. still blind

  569. to the

  570. identity of

  571. Jesus?

  572. If you're

  573. not a

  574. Christian this

  575. morning,

  576. I would

  577. urge you to

  578. investigate

  579. this.

  580. look into

  581. this

  582. eyewitness

  583. account of

  584. the life

  585. of Jesus

  586. and wrestle

  587. with what

  588. is really

  589. happening

  590. here.

  591. Jesus is

  592. not just

  593. a good

  594. guy.

  595. He is

  596. not a

  597. moral

  598. teacher.

  599. Jesus is

  600. the light

  601. of the

  602. world,

  603. who can

  604. open the

  605. eyes of

  606. the blind

  607. both

  608. physically

  609. and

  610. spiritually.

  611. the blind

  612. receive

  613. sight.

  614. Have you

  615. received that

  616. sight this

  617. morning?

  618. Jesus is

  619. the light

  620. of the

  621. world,

  622. who opens

  623. the eyes

  624. of the

  625. blind.

  626. And the

  627. second thing

  628. we see in

  629. this passage

  630. is that

  631. those who

  632. are seeing

  633. are blinded.

  634. The seeing

  635. are blinded.

  636. the man is

  637. taken to

  638. the Pharisees

  639. in verse

  640. 13 and

  641. it is here

  642. that we

  643. realize the

  644. extent of

  645. spiritual

  646. blindness

  647. that is

  648. found among

  649. the religious

  650. elite of

  651. this day.

  652. To be

  653. spiritually

  654. blind means

  655. to be

  656. oblivious to

  657. the things

  658. of God.

  659. It means

  660. that someone

  661. can be

  662. presented with

  663. the works

  664. of God,

  665. can be

  666. told about

  667. the identity

  668. of Jesus

  669. and can

  670. have the

  671. good news

  672. explained to

  673. them and

  674. yet they

  675. continue to

  676. reject God.

  677. That is

  678. the spiritual

  679. blindness of

  680. the religious

  681. leaders here.

  682. The Pharisees

  683. hear in

  684. verse 15

  685. how this

  686. man was

  687. blind but

  688. now he

  689. sees because

  690. Jesus put

  691. mud on

  692. his eyes.

  693. But instead

  694. of rejoicing

  695. at the

  696. wonderful work

  697. that God

  698. has done,

  699. they conclude

  700. in verse

  701. 16 that

  702. Jesus is

  703. not from

  704. God because

  705. this miracle

  706. happened on

  707. a Sabbath.

  708. They even

  709. dare to

  710. call Jesus

  711. a sinner.

  712. He is

  713. the only

  714. perfect one,

  715. the sinless

  716. son of

  717. God but

  718. they refuse

  719. to admit

  720. that.

  721. They are

  722. blind.

  723. The Pharisees

  724. in this

  725. next little

  726. section

  727. question the

  728. man and

  729. his parents

  730. and they

  731. conclude

  732. that this

  733. blind man

  734. is a liar

  735. contrary to

  736. all the

  737. evidence

  738. and they

  739. conclude that

  740. Jesus is

  741. a sinner.

  742. They are

  743. given all

  744. the evidence

  745. they need

  746. to see that

  747. this miracle

  748. is authentic.

  749. They have

  750. the neighbor's

  751. testimony,

  752. the testimony

  753. of the blind

  754. man that he

  755. was born

  756. blind and

  757. now he

  758. sees

  759. and they

  760. hear from

  761. this man's

  762. parents and

  763. still they

  764. refuse to

  765. acknowledge what

  766. is before

  767. their very

  768. eyes.

  769. Why?

  770. Because

  771. although they

  772. see they

  773. are spiritually

  774. blind.

  775. Adam and in

  776. their denial of

  777. the facts the

  778. religious leaders

  779. turn back to

  780. the man in

  781. verse 24 and

  782. say give glory

  783. to God by

  784. telling the

  785. truth.

  786. we know

  787. this man is

  788. a sinner.

  789. The irony of

  790. that verse is

  791. beyond measure.

  792. They are

  793. urging this

  794. man to

  795. glorify God

  796. by calling

  797. God's son a

  798. sinner.

  799. They are not

  800. telling the

  801. man to give

  802. glory to God

  803. by thanking

  804. God for this

  805. healing.

  806. They are

  807. saying tell

  808. the truth

  809. before God.

  810. But they

  811. don't want the

  812. truth.

  813. They want

  814. to hear

  815. what they

  816. have already

  817. concluded in

  818. their minds.

  819. And just as a

  820. side note,

  821. if you're not a

  822. Christian and

  823. you're tuning

  824. into this,

  825. have you

  826. reflected on

  827. why it is

  828. you believe

  829. what you do?

  830. If you don't

  831. believe the

  832. gospel, do you

  833. know exactly

  834. what it is

  835. that you're

  836. rejecting?

  837. Can you say

  838. with a good

  839. conscience that

  840. you have

  841. earnestly looked

  842. at all the

  843. evidence?

  844. And you

  845. don't believe

  846. it?

  847. Or are you

  848. rejecting something

  849. that you

  850. haven't properly

  851. wrestled with

  852. yet?

  853. And this

  854. blind man

  855. who now

  856. sees,

  857. realizes that

  858. these supposed

  859. men of God

  860. aren't willing

  861. to recognize

  862. the truth that

  863. is very clearly

  864. before them.

  865. And he ends

  866. this meeting

  867. with a conclusion

  868. in verse 33.

  869. If this man

  870. referring to

  871. Jesus were

  872. not from

  873. God, he

  874. could do

  875. nothing.

  876. And this

  877. sends the

  878. Pharisees into

  879. a rage.

  880. And they

  881. throw him out

  882. of the

  883. community.

  884. The light of

  885. the world has

  886. been presented

  887. to them.

  888. And they are

  889. being blinded.

  890. As Jesus

  891. says, this is

  892. why he came

  893. in verse 39.

  894. For judgment

  895. I have come

  896. into the

  897. world so

  898. that the

  899. blind will

  900. see and

  901. those who

  902. see will

  903. become blind.

  904. And some

  905. Pharisees hear

  906. this.

  907. And they ask

  908. a very important

  909. and very

  910. telling question

  911. in verse 40.

  912. are we

  913. blind too?

  914. Jesus

  915. responds, if

  916. you were

  917. blind, you

  918. would not be

  919. guilty of

  920. sin.

  921. But now

  922. that you

  923. claim to

  924. see, your

  925. guilt remains.

  926. Jesus is

  927. saying that

  928. they've had

  929. God's law.

  930. They should

  931. be aware of

  932. their sin and

  933. their need for

  934. forgiveness.

  935. But they

  936. reject the

  937. light because

  938. they don't think

  939. they need it.

  940. They think

  941. that their

  942. religious deeds

  943. will make them

  944. right with

  945. God.

  946. They think

  947. that they are

  948. good enough.

  949. They are the

  950. very definition

  951. of self-righteousness.

  952. They think

  953. that their

  954. windows are

  955. squeaky clean

  956. when the sun

  957. shines in on

  958. them.

  959. But it

  960. isn't.

  961. The

  962. scriptures make

  963. it abundantly

  964. clear that man

  965. cannot be

  966. made right

  967. with God

  968. apart from

  969. Jesus Christ.

  970. The gospel,

  971. the good news

  972. of Jesus,

  973. the light of

  974. the world is

  975. shining on

  976. these men

  977. and they're

  978. being blinded.

  979. The sun is

  980. shining right at

  981. them and they

  982. just don't get

  983. it.

  984. They refuse the

  985. light of the

  986. world and they

  987. want to stay in

  988. their spiritual

  989. darkness.

  990. Friends, this is

  991. what happens when

  992. the good news of

  993. Jesus is held

  994. out to a

  995. watching world.

  996. Some turn in

  997. belief and

  998. rightly worship

  999. God,

  1000. recognizing their

  1001. sin and utter

  1002. dependence on

  1003. Jesus for

  1004. forgiveness whilst

  1005. others are

  1006. blinded,

  1007. mistakenly

  1008. thinking that

  1009. they are good

  1010. enough to be

  1011. in God's

  1012. good books

  1013. and they

  1014. refuse to

  1015. acknowledge the

  1016. truth that

  1017. Jesus is

  1018. Lord.

  1019. Let me be

  1020. clear this

  1021. morning.

  1022. We can never

  1023. do enough

  1024. or be good

  1025. enough to be

  1026. made right with

  1027. God by

  1028. ourselves.

  1029. It is solely

  1030. through Jesus

  1031. Christ that

  1032. people find

  1033. forgiveness and

  1034. are made right

  1035. with God.

  1036. God.

  1037. This is

  1038. important for

  1039. Christians to

  1040. know because

  1041. our job is to

  1042. spread the good

  1043. news of Jesus

  1044. in the world and

  1045. leave the responses

  1046. to God.

  1047. He knows who

  1048. his people are.

  1049. He knows who

  1050. will respond to

  1051. him and who

  1052. will reject

  1053. him.

  1054. And as

  1055. Christians,

  1056. our response

  1057. always should

  1058. be to have

  1059. the same

  1060. reaction now

  1061. as we did

  1062. when we first

  1063. became Christians.

  1064. to bow down

  1065. in adoration

  1066. and out

  1067. and out

  1068. worship

  1069. of Jesus

  1070. for who he

  1071. is, the

  1072. light of

  1073. the world.

  1074. Christians are

  1075. called to be

  1076. lights in

  1077. this dark

  1078. world and

  1079. share the

  1080. forgiveness that

  1081. Jesus offers

  1082. to those who

  1083. walk in

  1084. darkness.

  1085. And if

  1086. you're not a

  1087. Christian this

  1088. morning, the

  1089. Bible says

  1090. that you're

  1091. spiritually blind,

  1092. the message

  1093. of Jesus,

  1094. the light of

  1095. the world

  1096. reveals that

  1097. reality in

  1098. your life.

  1099. The light

  1100. reveals the

  1101. problem, but

  1102. the light is

  1103. the solution

  1104. to that very

  1105. problem.

  1106. Because it

  1107. was Jesus

  1108. himself who

  1109. went to the

  1110. cross, bearing

  1111. the full wrath

  1112. and judgment

  1113. of God

  1114. so that

  1115. sinners, so

  1116. that spiritually

  1117. blind people

  1118. like you and

  1119. me can receive

  1120. sight.

  1121. And Jesus

  1122. rose from the

  1123. dead proving

  1124. that to be

  1125. true.

  1126. It is only by

  1127. confessing our

  1128. sin to Jesus

  1129. and crying out

  1130. to him for

  1131. forgiveness

  1132. that we receive

  1133. spiritual sight.

  1134. how will you

  1135. respond to

  1136. this light of

  1137. the world?

  1138. Will you

  1139. recognize Jesus

  1140. as Lord and

  1141. worship him?

  1142. Or will you

  1143. refuse and

  1144. continue to

  1145. walk in

  1146. darkness?

  1147. Think back to

  1148. the sun and

  1149. the power that

  1150. it has to both

  1151. reveal and to

  1152. blind.

  1153. Well, my

  1154. prayer is this

  1155. morning.

  1156. as the good

  1157. news of Jesus

  1158. has been read,

  1159. has been

  1160. proclaimed, as

  1161. the identity of

  1162. Jesus, as the

  1163. light of the

  1164. world, has been

  1165. made known, that

  1166. you would have

  1167. your eyes opened

  1168. and that you

  1169. would run to

  1170. him for

  1171. forgiveness and

  1172. worship him.

  1173. Let's pray

  1174. together.

  1175. Father, we

  1176. thank you that

  1177. you sent your

  1178. son, the light

  1179. of the world

  1180. that reveals

  1181. the reality of

  1182. our lives.

  1183. Father, forgive

  1184. us for the

  1185. times that we've

  1186. thought that we

  1187. can be made

  1188. right with you by

  1189. ourselves, that we

  1190. are good enough.

  1191. Lord, we confess

  1192. that we are not.

  1193. But we thank you

  1194. that you have

  1195. revealed the

  1196. truth and that

  1197. you sent your

1198. son to die on a

  1199. cross, meaning

1200. that we can now be

  1201. made right with you,

  1202. that we can be

  1203. forgiven and receive

  1204. spiritual sight.

  1205. Father, give us

  1206. boldness to

  1207. proclaim the

  1208. gospel and trust

  1209. you with the

  1210. results.

  1211. We ask this in

  1212. Jesus' name.

  1213. Amen.
