  1. For around 30 years after we moved into this building, I think for actually quite a long time before as well,

  2. our church secretary or correspondent was Mr David Eard.

  3. David Eard was the father of David Eard, who is now an elder in the church here.

  4. And one of the duties of the church correspondent was that every Sunday at the end of the breaking of bread service,

  5. which in those days was the one everyone attended, he would bring us the intimations, the notices.

  6. And it's fair to say that Mr Eard had a unique style of doing it, what he sometimes lacked in brevity,

  7. certainly made up for in warmth and wit.

  8. But sometimes he had a more difficult duty to perform.

  9. When someone who was a member of the church had passed away, a mystery was informing us about their death.

  10. And in just a few sentences, he needed to sum up what had characterised their life.

  11. And he had a wording that he used very often.

  12. I'm not sure if he always used it, but certainly he used it very often.

  13. And he would say, she loved the Lord, she loved the Word, and she loved the assembling of God's people.

  14. She loved the Lord, she loved the Word, and she loved the assembling of God's people.

  15. And in a sense, that said it all, there would, of course, be a funeral service,

  16. and someone, quite often my father, would pay more of a personal tribute about the individual's character.

  17. But actually, when you've said what Mr Eard said, you have probably given as high accommodation

  18. of someone's involvement in the church as you could.

  19. They loved the Lord, they loved the Word, and they loved God's people.

  20. And in Hebrews chapter 10, in this passage we've read, there are three exhortations that the writer brings to us.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  21. And they are about the Lord, the Word, and the Lord's people.

  22. So in verse 22, the writer says,

  23. Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith.

  24. Our relationship with the Lord.

  25. Verse 23, he says,

  26. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we possess, for he who promised is faithful.

  27. God's promises, his word.

  28. And then from verse 24, he says,

  29. Let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds.

  30. God's people.

  31. I want to look very briefly at these three relationships this evening,

  32. and what the writer to the Hebrews has to say about them.

  33. But before that, just a little bit of background and the earlier verses that we read.

  34. Quite a few of the New Testament letters can quite conveniently be divided into two sections.

  35. There's a doctrinal section which takes up usually about half the letter, sometimes a bit more.

  36. And then there's a practical section which comes after it.

  37. And the doctrinal sections always have practical implications, and the practical sections include great doctrine.

  38. But I think it's a valid differentiation to make in many of the letters.

  39. And often in the middle, there's a kind of linking passage that links the two sections together,

  40. that closes off one and that introduces the other.

  41. So for instance, in Romans, Romans chapter 12 and verse 1, Paul says,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  42. Therefore, looking back, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy,

  43. to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice.

  44. Or in Colossians chapter 3, Paul writes,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  45. Since then, and again looking back,

  46. Since then you have been raised with Christ,

  47. set your heart on things above where Christ is,

  48. seated at the right hand of God.

  49. And in both cases, he then goes on to some very practical instructions for the Christians.

  50. And I think in the book of Hebrews, this is that linking passage.

  51. It takes what the writer has been bringing us in the early part of the book,

  52. particularly from chapter 4 onwards,

  53. and it links it into the latter part of the book,

  54. which is full of exhortations and also of examples that we should follow.

  55. And this little passage, towards the end of chapter 10,

  56. links the two together, summarizes one, and prepares us for the other.

  57. So what does the writer say?

  58. So looking back, the writer says two things.

  59. First of all, he says we have confidence to enter the most holy place by the blood of Christ,

  60. Jesus.

  61. And then he says we have a great high priest over the house of God.

  62. We have access to God's presence,

  63. and we have someone who stands before God and who represents us to him.

  64. Now the picture, of course, is from the Old Testament,

  65. and it is of the tabernacle or later of the temple.

  66. And within the tabernacle and the temple,

  67. there was an area which was called the Holy of Holies,

  68. or the most holy place, the writer calls it here.

  69. And only one person, the high priest, could go into that area

  70. and only once a year on the Day of Atonement.

  71. The normal people, even the normal priests,

  72. would never get to see inside the most holy place.

  73. That is where the presence of God was,

  74. within the camp of the Israelites,

  75. or within the temple of the Israelites.

  76. And only one person could go in,

  77. only once a year,

  78. and only having followed various rituals

  79. to make sure he was in the right condition to go there.

  80. And the writer here is saying,

  81. that was the old position.

  82. But the new position is that all of us

  83. can go into the presence of God.

  84. That barrier, that curtain that used to be there,

  85. has gone.

  86. And if we are trusting in the Lord Jesus,

  87. if he is our great high priest,

  88. then we have access into the very presence of God.

  89. And the reason for that is the two things

  90. we'll be thinking about later on

  91. as we take communion together.

  92. It's the blood and the body of the Lord Jesus.

  93. So before the priest went in,

  94. the animal had to be sacrificed,

  95. his blood had to be sprinkled,

  96. and the reparation for sin had to be made.

  97. The writer says,

  98. we can enter the most holy place,

  99. not through the blood of animals,

  100. as the high priest used to,

  101. but through the blood of the Lord Jesus,

  102. through the sacrifice that he made for us

  103. when he died on the cross.

  104. And he says,

  105. the curtain that used to be there is gone.

  106. Now you remember,

  107. at the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus,

  108. the curtain in the temple

  109. that separates the most holy place

  110. from the holy place was torn in two.

  111. That barrier to entrance to God had gone.

  112. And the writer here says,

  113. the barrier is still gone for us as well.

  114. And what is represented by that

  115. is the body of the Lord Jesus,

  116. which was figuratively,

  117. or literally in many ways,

  118. torn apart for us.

  119. When the Lord Jesus' body

  120. was nailed to the cross,

  121. when he took our sins on himself.

  122. That is what opened up

  123. the way of access to God.

  124. Jesus, who stands between us and God,

  125. has given us access

  126. into the presence of God.

  127. So the writer says,

  128. we have a new and living way

  129. open for us.

  130. New and as it was previously unavailable,

  131. those who didn't know Jesus,

  132. as those who had come before,

  133. even the believing Jews,

  134. they couldn't come

  135. in the way that we can.

  136. It's new.

  137. And it's living.

  138. It's real.

  139. It's active.

  140. And it is based on a saviour

  141. who has died

  142. and has risen again.

  143. What a wonderful privilege it is

  144. that we can come

  145. into the presence

  146. of the most holy God

  147. without fear

  148. through the blood

  149. of the Lord Jesus.

  150. Alongside that,

  151. the writer says,

  152. we also have a great priest

  153. over the house of God.

  154. What is the function of the priest?

  155. It is to make sacrifices.

  156. It is to represent men

  157. before God.

  158. And we, of course,

  159. are a kingdom of priests

  160. that we can come directly

  161. into God's presence

  162. and intercede for others

  163. to him.

  164. But the Lord Jesus

  165. is the great priest

  166. or the great high priest,

  167. the one who stands

  168. before the Father

  169. and as the hymn said,

  170. the song we listened to earlier said,

  171. whoever lives

  172. and pleads for us.

  173. And we have someone

  174. in the very presence of God

  175. who is our representative there,

  176. who is our high priest

  177. and who is presenting

  178. his own sacrifice to God

  179. as the basis

  180. on which we can come

  181. into the presence of God.

  182. And these two descriptions

  183. very succinctly sum up

  184. what's gone before

  185. in the book of Hebrews.

  186. And of course,

  187. there's lots more there,

  188. but in terms of a summary,

  189. these two really sum it up.

  190. The sacrifice of the Lord Jesus

  191. greater than the sacrifices

  192. in the Old Testament.

  193. The priesthood of the Lord Jesus

  194. greater than the priesthoods

  195. in the Old Testament.

  196. And so the writer says,

  197. given that,

  198. given what we've thought about,

  199. given what's gone before,

  200. given what we know

  201. about our position before God,

  202. here are three things

  203. to think about.

  204. Here are three things

  205. that as Christians

  206. should mark us.

  207. And the first of these

  208. is verse 22,

  209. let us draw near to God

  210. with a sincere heart

  211. and full assurance of faith,

  212. having our hearts sprinkled

  213. to cleanse us

  214. from a guilty conscience

  215. and having our bodies washed

  216. with pure water.

  217. So this is about our relationship

  218. with the Lord

  219. and it is characterized

  220. by faith.

  221. By the faith that we have

  222. in the Lord Jesus

  223. and the confidence

  224. that that gives us

  225. to come into the presence

  226. of God.

  227. And we can come without fear,

  228. knowing that the Lord Jesus

  229. has taken all our sin

  230. on himself

  231. and that God,

  232. on that basis,

  233. is happy to accept us,

  234. to accept us indeed

  235. as his children

  236. and to have us come freely

  237. into his presence

  238. to bring our praise,

  239. our thanksgiving,

  240. our confessions

  241. and our requests to him.

  242. And we can come with confidence.

  243. We can come with the full assurance

  244. of faith,

  245. says the writer,

  246. as we come with sincere hearts.

  247. But he also says something

  248. about our condition,

  249. our confidence

  250. and our condition

  251. as we come.

  252. He says,

  253. having our hearts sprinkled

  254. to cleanse us

  255. from a guilty conscience

  256. and having our bodies

  257. washed

  258. with pure water.

  259. Now I think the immediate reference

  260. in this verse

  261. is to the Old Testament.

  262. It is to the fact

  263. that the blood

  264. had to be sprinkled

  265. and the priest

  266. had to go through

  267. the ritual

  268. of cleansing,

  269. of washing himself

  270. in the exact form

  271. stipulated

  272. before he had come

  273. into the presence

  274. of God.

  275. But perhaps it is appropriate

  276. for us to look at it

  277. in a similar kind of way

  278. to the way we looked

  279. at John 13

  280. a couple of weeks ago

  281. in terms of us

  282. being made clean.

  283. And our hearts

  284. have been cleansed

  285. by the blood

  286. of the Lord Jesus

  287. by his sacrifice

  288. for us.

  289. And that's been symbolized

  290. for many,

  291. if not all of us,

  292. by going through

  293. the waters of baptism.

  294. Our bodies in that sense

  295. being washed.

  296. And baptism

  297. is a representation

  298. of something

  299. that's happened

  300. internally

  301. and is showing

  302. to the world

  303. that we are different.

  304. And perhaps the writer,

  305. at least as a secondary thought

  306. in these verses,

  307. is thinking about

  308. the cleansing internal

  309. of our hearts

  310. and the way

  311. that is represented

  312. when we are baptized.

  313. But the key thing

  314. is we come to God,

  315. we come to him

  316. in faith,

  317. and we come to him

  318. with real confidence.

  319. Then in verse 23,

  320. the writer moves on,

  321. we've got a second exhortation,

  322. let us hold

  323. unswervingly

  324. to the hope

  325. we profess

  326. for he who promised

  327. is faithful.

  328. And I've characterized

  329. that as being

  330. about God's word,

  331. God's promises

  332. to us.

  333. And the key thing

  334. that should mark us

  335. as we think about them

  336. is hope.

  337. That we know

  338. that our God

  339. is faithful,

  340. that he is reliable,

  341. that he keeps

  342. his promise.

  343. And so when we come

  344. to him,

  345. we come with a confidence

  346. that he holds us

  347. in our hands

  348. and that he will do

  349. whatever is best

  350. for us.

  351. we should hold

  352. unswervingly,

  353. it says.

  354. That's quite a strong word

  355. that's used,

  356. the adverb there,

  357. unswervingly.

  358. We should have a firm

  359. and steadfast hope

  360. and faith

  361. in the Lord Jesus.

  362. Doesn't mean

  363. we'll never have doubts?

  364. I think probably

  365. all of us

  366. at times

  367. have doubts.

  368. But nevertheless,

  369. our faith,

  370. our hope

  371. in the Lord Jesus

  372. should be something

  373. that sustains us

  374. through the hard times

  375. as well as

  376. through the easy times.

  377. And certainly

  378. the last few months

  379. for all of us

  380. in differing ways

  381. have been

  382. very hard.

  383. And I hope

  384. for all of us

  385. that something

  386. of the hope

  387. that we have

  388. in the Lord Jesus

  389. and our knowledge

  390. of him

  391. has been able

  392. to sustain

  393. and strengthen us.

  394. Knowing that

  395. whatever may happen

  396. in our world,

  397. we are in his hands.

  398. He is ultimately

  399. in control.

  400. And we have this

  401. marvellous hope in him,

  402. not just for this world

  403. and looking for things

  404. to get better,

  405. but beyond this world

  406. we have the hope

  407. of eternal life

  408. through the Lord Jesus.

  409. And we should be aiming

  410. to hold unswervingly

  411. to that hope

  412. and in the most

  413. difficult times

  414. lay hold of it

  415. as the thing

  416. that helps us through

  417. as we think about

  418. our relationship

  419. with the Lord Jesus.

  420. our relationship

  421. with the word

  422. characterised by hope.

  423. And then finally

  424. in verses 24 and 25

  425. there is our relationship

  426. with God's people

  427. and I would suggest

  428. that that is characterised

  429. by love.

  430. So the writer says

  431. let us consider

  432. how we may spur

  433. one another on

  434. towards love

  435. and good deeds.

  436. Notice the main verb here.

  437. This writer doesn't say

  438. let us spur

  439. one another on.

  440. That's true,

  441. we should be spurring

  442. one another on,

  443. we should be encouraging

  444. one another.

  445. But the writer says

  446. let us consider

  447. how we may spur

  448. one another on.

  449. I think consider

  450. is an adequate

  451. translation here

  452. but perhaps it doesn't

  453. get across the full force

  454. of what the writer

  455. is saying.

  456. And I found

  457. a couple of paraphrases

  458. quite helpful in this.

  459. the Passion Translation

  460. says that we should

  461. discover creative ways

  462. to spur one another on.

  463. The message says

  464. let's see how inventive

  465. we can be.

  466. Now there are paraphrases

  467. that are going beyond

  468. what the original text says

  469. but I think they get

  470. something of the flavour

  471. of it.

  472. We should be

  473. consciously thinking

  474. how can I best

  475. encourage my Christian

  476. brothers and sisters

  477. in their walk

  478. with the Lord Jesus.

  479. How can I

  480. take every opportunity

  481. to support them

  482. and to give them

  483. encouragement

  484. to keep going

  485. and to follow Jesus

  486. and to love one another

  487. and to do good

  488. in our world.

  489. And perhaps at times

  490. we have a bit of a kind of

  491. one size fits all

  492. mentality

  493. in terms of how we think

  494. people should be acting.

  495. But we should be looking

  496. as a church

  497. of what is appropriate

  498. for us

  499. but also for individuals

  500. as we come alongside them

  501. and we seek to encourage them

  502. in their faith.

  503. Can we consider

  504. what are the things

  505. that are going to be

  506. most effective

  507. in building them up

  508. in the Lord Jesus.

  509. And of course

  510. we will point them

  511. to his word

  512. we may well be reading

  513. God's word with them

  514. and encouraging them

  515. through that

  516. but doing it

  517. not on a kind of

  518. rote basis

  519. this is what you do

  520. if you're a Christian

  521. rather thinking through

  522. well what is it

  523. that people need

  524. what is this going

  525. to most encourage them

  526. spur them on

  527. and let's think

  528. how we can do that.

  529. I think over the last few months

  530. a good number of people

  531. in this church

  532. have been very good

  533. at doing that

  534. at thinking about

  535. the needs of

  536. particular individuals

  537. and at looking

  538. to meet these needs

  539. and to encourage them

  540. in their faith

  541. and in their walk

  542. with the Lord Jesus.

  543. And all of us

  544. should have that

  545. as our goal

  546. that we work together

  547. that we serve together

  548. that we encourage

  549. one another

  550. in our faith.

  551. And then the last verse

  552. verse 25

  553. I suspect

  554. I didn't discuss

  555. with Graham and Nasser

  556. but I suspect

  557. this may be the verse

  558. that particularly determined

  559. that this would be

  560. the passage

  561. we looked at

  562. this evening.

  563. Let us not give up

  564. meeting together

  565. as some are in the habit

  566. of doing

  567. but let us encourage

  568. one another

  569. and all the more

  570. as you see

  571. the day approaching.

  572. Let us not give up

  573. meeting together.

  574. There's an awful lot

  575. you can do

  576. by phone

  577. or by Zoom

  578. as we've discovered

  579. over the last few months

  580. but equally

  581. there's an awful lot

  582. you can't do

  583. remotely.

  584. Being able to sit

  585. with someone

  586. presumably distance

  587. at the moment

  588. to talk things through

  589. to see

  590. their reactions

  591. and their body language

  592. and how they're feeling

  593. and how things are going

  594. and to have a much more

  595. in-depth

  596. conversation with them

  597. than you can

  598. over the phone.

  599. When things are

  600. a bit more relaxed

  601. than they are now

  602. to be able to put your hand

  603. around the shoulder

  604. of a brother or sister

  605. who is struggling

  606. as you encourage them

  607. in their faith.

  608. To be able to pray together

  609. as we meet together.

  610. And we need as Christians

  611. to recognise

  612. we're not just

  613. a collection

  614. of solitary individuals

  615. worshipping Jesus

  616. and serving him.

  617. Rather we're the church

  618. of the Lord Jesus

  619. that meets

  620. at Brunsfield

  621. and we have responsibilities

  622. towards one another

  623. that can only really

  624. be fully discharged

  625. in person

  626. when we see

  627. one another.

  628. And we're wonderful,

  629. won't it,

  630. when we're all able

  631. to be back together

  632. as a church

  633. and to share together

  634. in the way

  635. that we've been used to

  636. in the past.

  637. But I think there's

  638. a real encouragement there

  639. as we are able to

  640. over the coming weeks.

  641. To meet together

  642. whether it's outside

  643. or whether it's in houses

  644. to be distanced

  645. to meet together

  646. and to be able

  647. to share together

  648. the things

  649. of the Lord Jesus.

  650. Particularly to look

  651. for those who perhaps

  652. need that word

  653. of encouragement

  654. and whether they're

  655. feeling a bit down

  656. or whether they're

  657. perhaps slipping away

  658. a bit in their

  659. Christian faith.

  660. But to encourage them

  661. and to strengthen them

  662. in the Lord Jesus.

  663. What is the final incentive

  664. for that?

  665. The writer says

  666. all the more

  667. as you see

  668. the day approaching.

  669. The Lord is coming back.

  670. We don't know

  671. when it will be.

  672. It could be

  673. very soon.

  674. And the writer says

  675. that is a real incentive

  676. for us to encourage

  677. and strengthen

  678. one another

  679. in our faith

  680. and in our walk

  681. with the Lord Jesus.

  682. It's a real incentive

  683. not to absent ourselves

  684. from meetings

  685. of God's people

  686. but where we can

  687. where it's appropriate

  688. and I realize

  689. for everyone

  690. it's not for everyone

  691. it's not appropriate

  692. at the moment

  693. to meet like this

  694. but where we can

  695. to meet with others

  696. and to encourage

  697. one another

  698. and strengthen

  699. one another

  700. in our faith.

  701. So three relationships.

  702. A relationship

  703. with the Lord

  704. that should be

  705. characterized

  706. by our faith

  707. in him

  708. and thinking

  709. about our access

  710. to God the Father.

  711. Let's make good use

  712. of the access

  713. that the Lord Jesus

  714. has given us.

  715. A relationship

  716. with the word

  717. characterized

  718. by our hope

  719. and by the certainty

  720. of God's promises

  721. and strengthening us

  722. through difficult times.

  723. And a relationship

  724. with each other

  725. characterized by love

  726. and bringing

  727. mutual support

  728. and encouragement

  729. in walking

  730. with the Lord Jesus.

  731. It may be able

  732. to be said

  733. of all of us

  734. he loves the Lord

  735. he loves the word

  736. and he loves

  737. the gatherings

  738. of God's people.

  739. Let me pray briefly.

  740. Father we thank you

  741. for your word

  742. to us this evening.

  743. We thank you

  744. for the writer

  745. to the Hebrews

  746. and the great concern

  747. he had for those

  748. he wrote to.

  749. People were going

  750. through difficult times

  751. and we thank you

  752. it is still relevant

  753. to us today

  754. that we need to

  755. remember that we have

  756. access into your presence

  757. through the Lord Jesus

  758. and what a wonderful

  759. privilege that is.

  760. That we need to

  761. cling on to the hope

  762. that we have

  763. steadfastly

  764. as we go through

  765. life's trials

  766. and that we need

  767. to consider

  768. how we can best

  769. encourage

  770. and strengthen

  771. one another

  772. in our faith

  773. in our love

  774. in our works.

  775. Help us to learn

  776. these lessons

  777. we pray

  778. and be with us now

  779. as in a few minutes

  780. we come together

  781. to share

  782. the communion

  783. to share the Lord's Supper

  784. may we do it

  785. in a way that is

  786. worthy of our Saviour.

  787. We give you thanks

  788. in Jesus name.

  789. Amen.
