  1. Well, folks, maybe you want to turn to Hebrews chapter 12 now.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  2. This is where we've got to in our little series that we've been in.

  3. Since we've been back in the building in the evenings,

  4. looking at the Christian life as it's been described to us

  5. by the author of Hebrews,

  6. who's encouraging his generation to keep on keeping on for Jesus Christ.

  7. So we took in 40 verses last week,

  8. which was a big task, but I think we got there.

  9. What we're going to do maybe mercifully this week

  10. is we're going to hone in on just two verses.

  11. We're just maybe going to slow the pace down,

  12. which is ironic given what we're looking at,

  13. but we're going to slow the pace down a little bit

  14. and just focus on these couple of verses,

  15. which are so key to the letter.

  16. So let's just read them.

  17. This is verses one and two of Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  18. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,

  19. let us throw off everything.

  20. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,

  21. fixing our eyes on Jesus,

  22. the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

  23. For the joy set before him,

  24. he endured the cross,

  25. scorning its shame,

  26. and sat down at the right hand

  27. of the throne of God.

  28. Amen.

  29. And I'm sure God will bless the reading of his words

  30. and it will not return to him without accomplishing the purposes

  31. which he has for it.

  32. So,

  33. if anybody sees me ever going near a boat again,

  34. you've got my permission to shoot me.

  35. You said that?

  36. Steve Redgrave.

  37. Sorry, I shouldn't have asked you to speak.

  38. Steve Redgrave said it, right?

  39. Steve Redgrave, the roar.

  40. Do you know when he said it?

  41. He said it rhetorical.

  42. He said it seconds after winning the gold medal

  43. at the Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia in 1992, right?

  44. Guy was in absolute agony.

  45. You feel that in his words.

  46. Every bone in his body aching,

  47. every muscle aching.

  48. I always love it how reporters

  49. just put the microphone straight in an athlete's face

  50. straight after they finished the race,

  51. which is probably why they get the lines that they do,

  52. don't they?

  53. But this is what he did.

  54. And here's the reality behind his words, right?

  55. Sprinting.

  56. I used to do it all the time at school.

  57. Sprinting is easy.

  58. Right?

  59. Easy.

  60. It's why you watch UC and Bolton

  61. doing the 100 meters back in the day.

  62. Hardly ever broke a sweat, did he?

  63. Right?

  64. Sprinting is easy.

  65. But endurance running,

  66. endurance racing,

  67. is unbelievably hard.

  68. Some of you might know that

  69. if you've done any kind of marathons in your time.

  70. Unbelievably hard.

  71. And here is what we're being told

  72. about the Christian life tonight.

  73. Right?

  74. It's an endurance race.

  75. Now let me just pause for a second, right?

  76. And just ask you the question

  77. I was asking myself all week.

  78. Do you think of your Christian life like that?

  79. Right?

  80. Do you see it in the context of it being a race?

  81. Because here's what I was thinking this week.

  82. How often I view my life

  83. as almost a series of many, many sprints.

  84. Right?

  85. I think to myself,

  86. if I can get from one holiday

  87. to the next holiday,

  88. if I can get from one weekend

  89. to the next weekend,

  90. if I can get from the morning

  91. to the evening,

  92. then I'll be okay.

  93. Right?

  94. Hardly do I ever stop

  95. and think about my life

  96. as a race?

  97. And as I said,

  98. ironically,

  99. this passage really helped me

  100. slow down this week

  101. and regain something

  102. of the bigger picture

  103. of the Christian life.

  104. think about it.

  105. Okay?

  106. This,

  107. this,

  108. this,

  109. this,

  110. this,

  111. I hope tonight

  112. will be extremely freeing

  113. to think of our lives like this.

  114. What does being in a race tell you?

  115. It tells you two things.

  116. First of all,

  117. that you can expect

  118. periods of pain.

  119. Okay?

  120. If you've ever done

  121. any running in Edinburgh,

  122. you'll know

  123. what that's like.

  124. Because what is Edinburgh not?

  125. It is not flat.

  126. Okay?

  127. One minute you're going downhill

  128. and you're thinking,

  129. I'm loving this.

  130. I could do this all day.

  131. Sign me up for the Berlin Marathon.

  132. And the next minute

  133. before you know it,

  134. you're going uphill.

  135. Your calves are tightening.

  136. Your thighs are burning.

  137. And you're thinking to yourself,

  138. I just want this to end.

  139. Now,

  140. how often is that

  141. the Christian experience

  142. in the Christian life?

  143. Okay?

  144. Some of us will be here tonight

  145. and we're flying

  146. with the Lord.

  147. Right?

  148. Every conversation you have

  149. with somebody

  150. somehow gets to the God.

  151. You're on fire for the Lord.

  152. And some of us will be here

  153. and we're in really tough

  154. periods of our lives.

  155. Okay?

  156. We're dealing with

  157. some really painful stuff.

  158. We're asking some

  159. really big questions.

  160. And if truth be told,

  161. we are thinking about

  162. tapping out.

  163. Or in some kind of way,

  164. just dropping the pace

  165. a little bit.

  166. Can expect periods of pain

  167. in the race?

  168. And secondly,

  169. there's a prize at the end.

  170. Okay?

  171. We're not running aimlessly.

  172. We're not,

  173. we're running somewhere.

  174. There's a goal.

  175. There's an end.

  176. There's a heavenly city.

  177. There's a resurrection future.

  178. There's a risen savior.

  179. That's the prize.

  180. Him.

  181. And so verse one,

  182. here's what our author writes.

  183. Let us run with perseverance

  184. the race which is marked out for us.

  185. You see in the text?

  186. Let us run with perseverance.

  187. Here's what's going on

  188. in Hebrews 11.

  189. Background to Hebrews here.

  190. When these folks,

  191. this generation of Christians,

  192. when they first came to know Jesus,

  193. they came flying out the traps.

  194. Okay?

  195. What did Linford Christie used to say?

  196. He used to go in the B of the bank,

  197. didn't he?

  198. Right?

  199. That was these guys flying out the traps for Jesus.

  200. If you want to flick back to verse 32 of chapter 10,

  201. if you've got it there,

  202. you'll see this.

  203. Our author writes,

  204. verse 32 of chapter 10,

  205. he says,

  206. recall the former days.

  207. Right?

  208. Verse 32 of chapter 10,

  209. recall the former days.

  210. In other words,

  211. remember back to what it was like

  212. when you first came to know Jesus.

  213. Right?

  214. You were standing with those

  215. fellow brothers and sisters

  216. who were going to prison.

  217. Right?

  218. You were standing with,

  219. I'm with them.

  220. That's what you were saying.

  221. You were looking out for those

  222. who were struggling in the fight

  223. and to get them back on their feet again.

  224. Some of you might know what that was like.

  225. Remember back when you first came to know Jesus.

  226. Right?

  227. Boom.

  228. Flying out the traps.

  229. That was these guys.

  230. But now,

  231. the pace has dropped

  232. massively.

  233. Right?

  234. They've been rejected

  235. probably by their

  236. Jewish community

  237. that used to be part of.

  238. Ridiculed by a world

  239. that thinks Jesus is offensive.

  240. All of a sudden,

  241. they began to drop

  242. the pace.

  243. And he writes,

  244. you're in an endurance race.

  245. Why does that come as a surprise?

  246. This stuff is happening to you.

  247. You've got to see.

  248. You've got to keep going.

  249. You've got to keep going.

  250. You're in an endurance race.

  251. Do you see the word,

  252. therefore,

  253. at verse 1?

  254. Right?

  255. Every time you see a therefore,

  256. we've got to ask,

  257. what is it there for?

  258. And it connects this invitation

  259. back to everything

  260. that's come before

  261. in chapter 11.

  262. This great cloud

  263. that he's talking about here

  264. is every single person

  265. that has been mentioned

  266. in chapter 11.

  267. As if to say,

  268. these guys were in the same race

  269. that you're in.

  270. Right?

  271. What does he call them?

  272. He calls them witnesses.

  273. Love that word.

  274. Witnesses.

  275. Two meanings here probably.

  276. Firstly,

  277. their lives.

  278. Everyone in Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  279. Their lives are testifying

  280. to the fact

  281. that the race

  282. is worth persevering in.

  283. Right?

  284. First image.

  285. Second image.

  286. These people,

  287. as it were,

  288. they finished the race.

  289. They're now either

  290. watching on from the stands

  291. or maybe they've even

  292. made it down the side

  293. of the track

  294. and they're cheering you on

  295. saying,

  296. keep on going.

  297. Keep on going.

  298. You know,

  299. I loved a bit this week

  300. hanging out with Abraham.

  301. Right?

  302. As I read about him,

  303. remember we met him

  304. in chapter 11

  305. hanging out with Abraham

  306. this week.

  307. You could feel him.

  308. Keep on going.

  309. Keep on going.

  310. Keep on going.

  311. Friends,

  312. we're in a race.

  313. We're in a race,

  314. an endurance race.

  315. Now,

  316. the what of that race,

  317. what we encounter

  318. is going to look different

  319. for each of us.

  320. Right?

  321. The unique things

  322. that we'll

  323. come up against

  324. while we're on this race,

  325. the things that the Lord

  326. knows about

  327. that he's sovereignly put there

  328. and the where

  329. will be different

  330. for each of us.

  331. Where we are

  332. in this race.

  333. Right?

  334. We've got no idea

  335. where we are

  336. in this race

  337. for all I know

  338. I was thinking about

  339. I could hit the finishing line

  340. tonight

  341. when I go home.

  342. Right?

  343. But make no mistake

  344. of what might be different,

  345. the where might be different,

  346. but the race is exactly

  347. the same

  348. and the goal is

  349. exactly the same

  350. and the goal is

  351. to finish the race.

  352. Finish the race.

  353. And so just

  354. in the time we have remaining

  355. let me just ask us

  356. two questions

  357. from this text

  358. to help us

  359. think about

  360. our race.

  361. Okay?

  362. Here's the first one.

  363. Friends,

  364. what might be

  365. slowing us down?

  366. Okay?

  367. What might be

  368. slowing us down?

  369. You see this

  370. halfway through verse 1.

  371. What does he say?

  372. Let us throw off

  373. everything that hinders

  374. and the sin

  375. that so easily

  376. entangles.

  377. And here's the cultural image

  378. that the author's tapping into.

  379. One that every single reader

  380. of this

  381. would have been

  382. very familiar with.

  383. So what you did

  384. if you were an athlete

  385. in the day,

  386. if you were serious

  387. about competing,

  388. serious about winning,

  389. what you used to do

  390. is to run stark naked.

  391. That's what you did.

  392. So that nothing

  393. held you back.

  394. Now don't dwell

  395. on the visual for too long,

  396. okay?

  397. Except to make,

  398. see the two

  399. spiritual realities

  400. that I think that image

  401. is actually really helpful for.

  402. Okay?

  403. Is there anything,

  404. friends,

  405. that we need to

  406. strip back

  407. from our life

  408. so that we can run better

  409. in the Christian life,

  410. in the Christian race?

  411. Okay?

  412. Stuff that's

  413. getting in the way.

  414. Okay?

  415. That's just clogging up

  416. our

  417. spiritual life.

  418. You know,

  419. I found out this week

  420. did it with our Hoover,

  421. right?

  422. It was Hoover

  423. and all of a sudden

  424. the thing cut out

  425. wasn't working anymore.

  426. Thinking to myself,

  427. get me that guarantee,

  428. get me that customer service

  429. number,

  430. I'm going to give them

  431. a piece of my mind.

  432. Do you know what it was?

  433. The thing was just clogged up.

  434. Right?

  435. Just spent ages

  436. just trying to,

  437. pulling out hairs

  438. and bits of couscous,

  439. that's always nice,

  440. isn't it?

  441. Pulling things out

  442. of the Hoover

  443. and all of a sudden

  444. once I got everything out,

  445. put it back together,

  446. hey Presto,

  447. it was working again.

  448. Friends,

  449. stuff that's

  450. clogging us up,

  451. right?

  452. It could be anything.

  453. So many good things

  454. can do this,

  455. right?

  456. I uninstalled Twitter

  457. on my phone last night

  458. because I realised

  459. it's just eating up my time.

  460. It's just eating up my time.

  461. Right?

  462. It could be anything.

  463. A DVD box set,

  464. a place and a committee,

  465. a do-it-up house,

  466. a job that's demanding

  467. all your hours,

  468. a relationship that you're in

  469. that's just not helpful.

  470. Friends,

  471. what is clogging up

  472. your walk with

  473. and your love for Jesus?

  474. I remember a good friend

  475. of mine

  476. phoning me

  477. and telling me

  478. that he just stopped

  479. going to the gym.

  480. Because he realised

  481. that it was eating up

  482. all his time

  483. and it was doing more

  484. than that.

  485. Actually,

  486. it was obsessing him

  487. with how he was looking

  488. and he thought,

  489. do you know what?

  490. It's nonsense.

  491. And here's the other

  492. spiritual truth

  493. about the athlete,

  494. right?

  495. I was trying to think

  496. about it this week.

  497. To run naked

  498. is to open yourself up,

  499. isn't it,

  500. in the eyes

  501. of the watching world

  502. and to make yourself

  503. very vulnerable.

  504. And let's just give you

  505. an example

  506. of what I mean here.

  507. Remember,

  508. we were on holiday

  509. down in Cornwall

  510. a few years ago

  511. and we went to

  512. just Google churches.

  513. The first one

  514. that came up

  515. with a New Frontiers one,

  516. which was a couple

  517. of miles away,

  518. so we went there.

  519. They gave us

  520. a wonderful welcome.

  521. But the thing

  522. that struck me

  523. when I was there

  524. struck me most,

  525. it was the notices,

  526. right?

  527. Hear me out,

  528. it was the notices.

  529. because the pastor

  530. stood up

  531. and he gave out

  532. the notices

  533. for the week

  534. and he talked

  535. about the guys

  536. who meet

  537. at the Tesco Cafe

  538. on Tuesday mornings.

  539. I thought,

  540. what on earth

  541. is that notice about?

  542. So I got chatting

  543. to him after the service

  544. and what it was,

  545. it was a group

  546. of people in the church

  547. who met up regularly

  548. with one another

  549. to help one another

  550. in their battle

  551. with pornography,

  552. right?

  553. And this is what they did.

  554. They just met up

  555. in Tesco Cafe

  556. on a Tuesday morning,

  557. right?

  558. Committed

  559. to sharing struggles,

  560. right?

  561. Determined to help

  562. one another

  563. in their Christian race,

  564. right?

  565. Committed to speaking

  566. the gospel to one another,

  567. right?

  568. You've fallen this week,

  569. get back up,

  570. remember,

  571. we're saved by grace,

  572. keep your eyes on Jesus,

  573. right?

  574. No condemnation

  575. because of his blood.

  576. Okay, okay, okay.

  577. And they start going again,

  578. right?

  579. This is what they did.

  580. They met up in this cafe

  581. to talk this stuff out.

  582. Get the stuff on the computer,

  583. anything you need to do

  584. to just to cut it out.

  585. This is a sin

  586. that so easily entangles

  587. and they did this

  588. in front of the church.

  589. The church didn't need

  590. to know who went.

  591. Okay, it was a kind of

  592. what happens in Tesco Club,

  593. stays in Tesco Club

  594. kind of thing.

  595. But everyone in the church

  596. knew this went on

  597. and it was inspiring them

  598. to take the action

  599. that they needed

  600. in their lives

  601. to deal with a sin

  602. that so easily entangles.

  603. And I remember thinking,

  604. how great is that?

  605. My friends,

  606. maybe some of us today

  607. it will be Tesco Club,

  608. right?

  609. Right?

  610. And let's make that happen.

  611. Let's get in touch

  612. and see if we can meet up

  613. to chat things out,

  614. to help one of us.

  615. But whatever that looks like

  616. in your life,

  617. that is the call

  618. of this passage

  619. to make yourself vulnerable,

  620. right?

  621. Whatever it is, friends,

  622. in our lives

  623. that we struggle with

  624. to come forward

  625. and say,

  626. Lord Jesus,

  627. I need you.

  628. Right?

  629. Think of it like this.

  630. What is the first thing

  631. that we read happens

  632. when Adam and Eve sin?

  633. Right?

  634. What do they do

  635. after they sin?

  636. They hide their nakedness.

  637. Right?

  638. Think about it.

  639. They hide their nakedness.

  640. But here's what the gospel does.

  641. It frees us

  642. from having to pretend

  643. and live a life

  644. of empty religion

  645. and covering up

  646. and pretending

  647. that we're sorted.

  648. Right?

  649. Because if we were sorted,

  650. then Jesus would not need to,

  651. would not have needed

  652. to die on the cross

  653. for us.

  654. Okay?

  655. Jesus bore our shame.

  656. He bore it all.

  657. He paid every penny

  658. of the ransom

  659. to buy us.

  660. And you see how

  661. this invites us

  662. to admit our struggles

  663. and to run to him

  664. for fresh grace.

  665. I know I read somebody

  666. on the internet this week.

  667. They put up,

  668. I think it was on Facebook,

  669. they said,

  670. what is your favorite line

  671. from a hymn?

  672. Right?

  673. And just boom, boom, boom,

  674. all these comments.

  675. It was wonderful to read.

  676. Do you know what my favorite line

  677. from a hymn is?

  678. It's these words

  679. from Horatius Bonar.

  680. I penned these

  681. all these years ago.

  682. He said,

  683. I heard the voice

  684. of Jesus say,

  685. come unto me

  686. and rest.

  687. Lay down,

  688. thou weary one,

  689. lay down,

  690. thy head upon my breast.

  691. I came to Jesus

  692. as I was,

  693. weary,

  694. worn,

  695. and sad,

  696. and I found in him

  697. a resting place,

  698. and he has made me glad.

  699. You know,

  700. so thankful

  701. that that is the Jesus

  702. that we encounter

  703. day after day after day.

  704. Friends,

  705. what is

  706. holding us back?

  707. What is slowing us down?

  708. It's a great question

  709. to ask ourselves.

  710. Here's the second question then.

  711. What's slowing us down?

  712. Second question,

  713. just really simply,

  714. are we looking

  715. to Jesus?

  716. Okay,

  717. tell you about

  718. something Alex and I found

  719. happened a few weeks ago

  720. with our girls.

  721. we would ask them

  722. to do something,

  723. right,

  724. just wash your hands

  725. before dinner,

  726. or just put your knife

  727. and fork away

  728. at the end of the meal,

  729. something like that,

  730. and every time

  731. we used to ask this,

  732. right,

  733. they would just go,

  734. huh,

  735. huh,

  736. right?

  737. Somebody told me

  738. this is like living

  739. with a three-nager,

  740. that's what it is,

  741. but huh,

  742. every time we asked,

  743. huh,

  744. I would look to each other

  745. thinking,

  746. where did they learn

  747. this from?

  748. Right,

  749. I don't think they've

  750. learned it from others,

  751. but I don't know,

  752. right?

  753. Do you know where

  754. they'd learned it from?

  755. They'd seen it

  756. in this little cute,

  757. innocent little TV program

  758. that they watched

  759. just before dinner,

  760. and they picked it up

  761. from one of the characters,

  762. right?

  763. The character would just go,

  764. huh,

  765. huh,

  766. anytime she had to do

  767. something,

  768. so this is what they do.

  769. Here's the real simple

  770. truth of life,

  771. friends,

  772. that what we look at

  773. affects the way we live,

  774. right?

  775. What we look at

  776. affects the way we live.

  777. So do you see

  778. where we're invited

  779. to look here,

  780. right?

  781. Do you see

  782. as we run the race,

  783. verse 3,

  784. fixing

  785. our eyes

  786. on Jesus.

  787. That's how we're to run,

  788. by looking at Him,

  789. looking at Him.

  790. What is it about Him?

  791. Let me just give you

  792. three quick things,

  793. okay?

  794. Here's the plea,

  795. in the race,

  796. never stop looking at Christ,

  797. never stop gazing at Him,

  798. breathe Him in,

  799. savour Him,

  800. take hold of Him.

  801. What do you need to take in

  802. and hold of?

  803. Three quick things.

  804. Firstly,

  805. that He's our Saviour,

  806. okay?

  807. Follow with me in the language here,

  808. the pioneer

  809. and the perfecter

  810. of our faith,

  811. right?

  812. Notice that those two

  813. are both perfect words,

  814. okay?

  815. In terms of Jesus being

  816. our perfect Saviour,

  817. that He has ran the race

  818. perfectly,

  819. that His righteousness

  820. is ours,

  821. it is done,

  822. okay?

  823. Those words,

  824. it is done,

  825. not it will be done.

  826. It's not like the

  827. John Lewis crane,

  828. right?

  829. Down near the Omniscientor

  830. that says this will be done

  831. and what's it say,

  832. like summer 2022,

  833. just bear with us

  834. while this work goes on.

  835. It's not like that

  836. with Jesus,

  837. right?

  838. His work is done.

  839. It's done.

  840. These are perfect,

  841. finished words.

  842. That's why we get

  843. at the beginning

  844. of this letter,

  845. we're thinking about

  846. this morning as well,

  847. weren't we?

  848. What is Jesus doing

  849. in heaven?

  850. He is sitting.

  851. He's sitting.

  852. This is done.

  853. We are His,

  854. His perfect life,

  855. His righteousness,

  856. we claim as ours,

  857. which means that

  858. when we stumble

  859. in the race

  860. and we stumble

  861. all the time,

  862. friends,

  863. what gets us back

  864. on our feet

  865. is not legalism,

  866. right?

  867. It's not,

  868. I want to do better.

  869. What gets us back

  870. on our feet

  871. is who Jesus is for us,

  872. His grace.

  873. Right?

  874. When sin does

  875. entangle us

  876. and we trip,

  877. we always come back

  878. to who He is

  879. for us

  880. and He is the pioneer

  881. and the perfecter

  882. of our faith

  883. and that's who we are.

  884. Right?

  885. I love what

  886. Scottish minister

  887. Robert Murray McShane

  888. used to say

  889. to his congregation

  890. and he would have said

  891. it in the city here.

  892. He said,

  893. for every one look

  894. at your sin,

  895. I want you to take

  896. ten looks at Christ.

  897. Right?

  898. Just do that

  899. next time in your head.

  900. You fall,

  901. look to Jesus,

  902. look to Jesus,

  903. look to Jesus,

  904. look to Jesus,

  905. look to Jesus,

  906. look to Jesus,

  907. look to Jesus.

  908. I look at Jesus,

  909. look to Jesus,

  910. look to Jesus

  911. and our eyes

  912. are fixed on Him.

  913. He's our Savior.

  914. What is He secondly?

  915. He's our example.

  916. Do you see in the text,

  917. for the joy set before Him,

  918. He endured the cross,

  919. scorning its shame.

  920. So the question is,

  921. what made Jesus

  922. endure the cross?

  923. Answer,

  924. it was the joy

  925. set before Him.

  926. What was that joy?

  927. Going back to being

  928. in the very presence

  929. of His Father

  930. that He'd left

  931. to take on our flesh.

  932. And because of His work,

  933. the presence

  934. that He will one day

  935. bring all His ransomed

  936. people into

  937. that we might enter into

  938. and share

  939. in the joy

  940. of the Father,

  941. the Son,

  942. and the Spirit.

  943. And that joy

  944. saw Him endure

  945. the most horrific

  946. of deaths.

  947. And I hope that encourages us

  948. wherever we're at

  949. right now

  950. that when we feel

  951. the pain of suffering

  952. in this life,

  953. right,

  954. whether it's suffering

  955. in general

  956. or suffering

  957. because we stand

  958. for Jesus

  959. and something in us

  960. in that moment

  961. longs for that day,

  962. friends,

  963. in a really profound way,

  964. we are sharing

  965. in something

  966. of the life

  967. and the death

  968. of our Savior.

  969. And I often think

  970. what often gets me

  971. through a run

  972. and I run home

  973. from the office

  974. during the week

  975. and did it this week.

  976. When you're running

  977. in the rain,

  978. what gets me

  979. to the other side,

  980. right,

  981. the joy that's set

  982. before me

  983. so often

  984. is a warm shower.

  985. Right,

  986. we'll go through anything

  987. because I know

  988. the warm shower is there.

  989. And this challenged me,

  990. how much more

  991. should the joy

  992. set before me

  993. eternally

  994. cause me

  995. to keep running

  996. the race

  997. with my eyes

  998. fixed on Christ.

  999. Friends,

  1000. he's our Savior,

  1001. he's our example

  1002. and thirdly,

  1003. he's our helper.

  1004. He's our helper

  1005. and sat down

  1006. at the right hand

1007. of the throne of God.

  1008. See,

  1009. the author here

  1010. brings the attention

  1011. to where Jesus is.

  1012. He's seated

  1013. at the right hand

1014. of the throne of God.

  1015. What's he doing there?

1016. Is he twiddling his thumbs

  1017. wondering what time

  1018. am I coming back?

  1019. No,

  1020. he ever lives

  1021. to plead for us.

  1022. He's praying for us.

  1023. Isn't that a magnificent thought?

  1024. He's praying for us.

  1025. We thought this morning

1026. if you tuned into that

1027. how often our prayer lives

  1028. are substandards,

  1029. they're up and they're down.

  1030. Christ's prayer life

  1031. for us

  1032. is people

  1033. that never falters.

  1034. He's given us

  1035. the spirit,

  1036. the very presence

  1037. of God

  1038. living and working

  1039. in us

  1040. and he promises

  1041. to equip us

  1042. with everything

  1043. that we need

  1044. to live

  1045. a life

  1046. for his glory.

  1047. But friends,

1048. just as we finish here,

  1049. we're in a race.

  1050. We're in a race.

  1051. You know,

1052. there were two other guys

  1053. in the boat

  1054. with Steve Redgrave

1055. when he won his race.

  1056. Right?

  1057. You had Matthew Pinson,

1058. he was the other guy.

  1059. The two of them

  1060. got all the limelight.

  1061. Right?

1062. Fast forward a little bit

  1063. and there's a knighthood

  1064. in there as well

  1065. as gold medals.

  1066. The third guy

1067. that was in the boat

  1068. was the cocks.

  1069. Right?

  1070. His job

  1071. is just to know

  1072. his roars inside out,

  1073. is to know

1074. what they need to hear

  1075. and to know

  1076. when they need

  1077. to hear it

  1078. and keep them going

1079. right to the finish line.

  1080. Right?

  1081. And that's what

  1082. the author

  1083. to the Hebrews

  1084. is doing

  1085. right here

  1086. to a tired

  1087. and to a battered

  1088. generation

1089. who are on the verge

  1090. of giving up.

  1091. He's saying,

  1092. come on guys.

  1093. Come on,

  1094. we can do this.

  1095. Come on.

  1096. Let's keep going.

  1097. Let's keep running.

  1098. Oh,

  1099. that you would know

1100. what's at the other side

  1101. of the finish line

  1102. and you would know

  1103. that that is worth

  1104. enduring

  1105. every single strain,

  1106. every single insult,

  1107. every single sleepless night,

  1108. every single hardship

  1109. because that prize,

  1110. oh,

  1111. it's so good.

  1112. one thing to do

  1113. practically

1114. just as we finish this.

  1115. Friends,

1116. I want us to think about,

  1117. maybe some of us

  1118. know right now,

  1119. those in the race

  1120. who are really struggling

  1121. at the minute.

  1122. Right?

1123. It's one of the beauties

1124. of being a church family.

  1125. Right?

  1126. Those in the race

  1127. who are really struggling

  1128. to keep going

  1129. at the minute.

  1130. You know,

  1131. I love those scenes

  1132. in the marathon,

  1133. you know,

  1134. when somebody's struggling

  1135. and somebody comes in

  1136. from the crowd

  1137. or whatnot

  1138. and they just go

  1139. under the shoulder,

  1140. don't they?

  1141. Just take them around

1142. and they just carry them,

  1143. help them keep going,

  1144. carry them on.

  1145. Well,

  1146. maybe that's something

  1147. that all of us

  1148. could do this evening

  1149. as we go home,

  1150. as we leave here.

  1151. Maybe it's even somebody

  1152. that's sitting here,

  1153. you know what they're

  1154. going through.

  1155. Friends,

1156. could you be the cocks

  1157. in their life?

  1158. Could you be

  1159. Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1160. the one who just

  1161. helps lift our eyes

  1162. to who Jesus is?

1163. So if anyone sees me

  1164. going anywhere near

  1165. a boat again,

  1166. you've got my permission

  1167. to shoot me.

  1168. Friends,

  1169. in all the pain

  1170. that's in that quote,

  1171. don't miss the fact

1172. that the context of it

  1173. is that the guy

  1174. who's just won

  1175. the gold medal.

  1176. Christian,

  1177. you're in a race,

  1178. we're in a race,

  1179. let's fix our eyes

  1180. on Jesus

  1181. and let's run it

  1182. with perseverance.

  1183. Let me pray.

  1184. And Father,

  1185. in the silence now,

  1186. we would just maybe

  1187. bring to you

  1188. our own prayers.

  1189. Father,

  1190. of the ways

  1191. that where we know

  1192. we are struggling

  1193. right now

  1194. and Father,

1195. thank you for that promise

  1196. that in Christ Jesus,

  1197. Lord,

1198. you promised to give us

  1199. the power to live

  1200. a life of godliness

  1201. and so Lord,

  1202. I pray,

  1203. Lord,

  1204. wherever we're at

  1205. that the grace

1206. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  1207. would be so precious

  1208. to each of us

  1209. and that your spirit

  1210. would be at work

1211. in each of our lives.

  1212. Father,

1213. help us fix our eyes

  1214. on Jesus,

  1215. the founder

  1216. and the perfecter

  1217. of our faith.

  1218. And we pray

  1219. in his precious name.

  1220. Amen.

  1221. Amen.

  1222. Amen.

  1223. Amen.

  1224. Amen.

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Amen.

  1227. Amen.

  1228. Amen.

  1229. Amen.

  1230. Amen.

  1231. Amen.

  1232. Amen.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Amen.

  1235. Amen.

  1236. Amen.

  1237. Amen.

  1238. Amen.

  1239. Amen.

  1240. Amen.

  1241. Amen.
