  1. Thank you very much, Alistair. Good morning, everyone. Good morning here in the hall and good morning to you watching from home or from wherever you may be.

  2. It's a joy to be with you this morning. And please do keep your Bibles open at that passage that Alistair just read to us there in Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  3. One of the additional, possibly unrecognized physical manifestations of COVID is going to be larger ears.

  4. We're all going to end up with cauliflower ears with these masks that we're having to wear.

  5. I'm very conscious of the fact that my ears are coming out like that.

  6. My wife actually said that she quite prefers the mask.

  7. She thinks it brings its own air of mystique and it might be a bit of an improvement me wearing a mask,

  8. but it's definitely having an impact on the lugs. They're getting larger the more I wear the mask.

  9. So that's probably in years to come. They're going to do studies into this.

  10. Either our hearing will be improved or dissipated through it. Certainly it doesn't improve the looks, I don't think.

  11. But there we are. I get to take mine off. You're stuck with yours for a little while longer.

  12. But of course, there is a serious side to where we are at the moment.

  13. The government's around the United Kingdom today worrying about the possibility of another COVID spike.

  14. But I think we need to issue another health warning, a more serious one this morning.

  15. There is the potential of there being a spiritual pandemic that has come as a result of the physical pandemic.

  16. There is something that seems to be affecting those who appear to be committed Christians.

  17. And this is impacting, it's not killing them physically, it's not affecting them physically,

  18. but it might be doing significant spiritual damage.

  19. I've heard from pastors all over the UK and even some further flung places around the world

  20. who tell me that some of their church family are not in a big hurry to return again to physical assembly,

  21. to being together, even with the restrictions that we have at the moment.

  22. They're just a sort of a deterioration in the desire of people to get there.

  23. And it's not for the reasons we might expect.

  24. It's not for the kind of good reasons that there might be those in a certain age group

  25. or with some form of compromised health that might make it more dangerous and difficult for them to gather,

  26. although amazingly every provision is made to make this safer than almost anything.

  27. But it's not for any of these reasons.

  28. It's because, and I know nothing about your own situation.

  29. Nobody has told me anything about your situation.

  30. So I'm not trying to be smart when I say this.

  31. I'm just telling you about an observation I'm making around the country and around the world.

  32. It's because that in a relatively short period, when we weren't able physically to gather,

  33. for some of our brothers and sisters, the Sunday habit has been displaced by other habits.

  34. And those in spiritual danger now would say, actually, they prefer just to watch online from home.

  35. It's a lot less hassle than having to get the family ready and get down to the hall and get a parking place

  36. and get them in and get them marshalled and get them to keep their masks on and all that kind of stuff.

  37. They report that they're enjoying a huge time saving because they can budget for maybe an hour or just less than an hour

  38. for viewing an online meeting.

  39. And they might not even do it on Sunday.

  40. They might bank it and do it some night lying in bed on the iPad before they fall asleep.

  41. So that ticks the box without them having to get on with all that's involved in being with the people of God.

  42. And it frees them up to do other things.

  43. They suddenly realize they have a whole extra day in their week that they didn't used to have on a conventional Christian Sunday.

  44. And they can get so much more done or they can just have a pajama day.

  45. Now who doesn't like a pajama day?

  46. And I would admit I've had to catch myself on with this myself.

  47. I certainly found that I missed being with my church family during lockdown.

  48. But it was amazing how attractive on a Saturday the thought of a leisurely breakfast on a Sunday morning was.

  49. And the fact that we were having our lunch at half past one instead of three o'clock.

  50. It really was lovely.

  51. And of course there's nothing wrong with enjoying the upside of that very weird season we went through during the peak of lockdown this year.

  52. But brothers and sisters what's happening is that with some in the church families and it might be you and it might be me and it might be people in my church family and it might be people in your church family.

  53. What is happening to some in our church families the world over is that the Lord Jesus and his day and his word and his family are being devalued.

  54. And that's happening because of a sight problem.

  55. That's happening because we're losing sight of the wonder of the Lord Jesus.

  56. We're losing sight of the Lord and what he's done for us historically and what he's doing in us as his people, his church in the present day.

  57. The word is being choked and making it unfruitful because other desires are coming in.

  58. Where it once seemed to have been bearing fruit in our lives.

  59. Now the good news is that none of this takes the Lord Jesus by surprise.

  60. He warns us about this doesn't he?

  61. In the passage I've just quoted to you about other things coming in, other desires choking the word and making it unfruitful.

  62. He warns us for example in Mark chapter 4.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  63. Or he warns us in Matthew chapter 24 verse 12 that because of lawlessness, the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold.

    Matthew 24:12

  64. So he pleads with his people.

  65. He reaches out to his people.

  66. He says be warned about this.

  67. Be warned about your love growing cold.

  68. And I don't think Paul would be at all surprised to know that it's possible for Christians who know and love the Lord to begin to lose sight of the Lord and lose sight of what he's done for us.

  69. A sight that dominates our lives.

  70. And lose sight of what he is doing among us.

  71. A sight that ought to order our lives.

  72. I don't think Paul would be surprised that that is beginning to happen.

  73. Because he prays for his readers in Ephesians chapter 1 verse 16.

    Ephesians 1:16

  74. Have a look at it with me.

  75. He says I don't cease to give thanks for you.

  76. Remembering you my prayers.

  77. And here's what he prays.

  78. That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom.

  79. Oh that he would make us wise.

  80. And revelation in the knowledge of him.

  81. That you'd increasingly know him.

  82. Verse 18.

  83. Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened.

  84. In other words, having the eyes of your hearts with their cataracts removed so that the light, the truth, the reality of the Lord Jesus and his gospel floods your life.

  85. The lamp of the body is the eye.

  86. Your heart has eyes.

  87. It sees.

  88. It assesses.

  89. It appreciates.

  90. It longs for.

  91. And here's Paul praying that the eyes of our hearts would be enlightened.

  92. That we would know the hope to which he has called us.

  93. And the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.

  94. And the immeasurable greatness of his power towards us who believe.

  95. See when the eyes of our hearts have cataracts removed.

  96. And see to focus again on ultimate reality like that.

  97. When our eyes are open to see the endless hope.

  98. And the glorious wealth.

  99. And the immeasurable power that belongs to our God.

  100. And that he deploys for his church.

  101. Then nothing else in the world takes the place of that treasure in our lives.

  102. And we're safe again.

  103. We're safe again.

  104. Nothing else comes in to displace his lordship.

  105. And it is so that our eyes can be freshly and constantly enlightened.

  106. That Paul then goes on in the chapter that we are looking at today.

  107. In chapter 2.

  108. To show us the very things that we so easily.

  109. And so disastrously potentially lose sight of.

  110. So that's what we're looking at today.

  111. The first 10 verses of chapter 2.

  112. And that's why we're looking at it.

  113. We're sitting in behind Paul.

  114. He was praying for the Ephesians.

  115. That their eyes would be illumined.

  116. That their eyes would be enlightened.

  117. That light would flood into the eyes of their hearts.

  118. And it would change them again.

  119. And that's what I want for myself.

  120. And that's why we're looking at this today.

  121. Now how are we going to tackle it?

  122. Well twice in these verses.

  123. Once in verse 5.

  124. Once in verse 8.

  125. Paul writes the phrase.

  126. By grace you have been saved.

  127. So let's pray that the eyes of our hearts will be freshly enlightened.

  128. As we think about what this means to be saved by grace.

  129. And there are three main things I want to draw your attention to this morning.

  130. Number one.

  131. Why we need saved.

  132. Number two.

  133. How we are saved.

  134. And number three.

  135. Why we are saved.

  136. So let's look at the first of these together.

  137. Why we need saved.

  138. So you might be a Christian listening to this.

  139. Many of you are I'm sure.

  140. You might not be a Christian listening to this.

  141. So why do we need saved?

  142. Why this talk in the Bible?

  143. Well there are three answers.

  144. In this passage at the beginning of chapter 2.

  145. The first of them is this.

  146. We need saved because number one.

  147. We were dead.

  148. Chapter 2 verse 1.

  149. And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you used to walk.

  150. I'm using ESV.

  151. I know you read from NIV.

  152. Transgressions.

  153. Trespasses.

  154. We'll come to that in a moment.

  155. But here's the big idea.

  156. Why do we need saved?

  157. Because we were dead.

  158. Now we talk about dead in an unusual way, don't we?

  159. We sometimes go.

  160. You may have been to a restaurant during lockdown when the restrictions lifted.

  161. And had a nice meal.

  162. Maybe paid half price for it.

  163. And then next day you're talking to someone on the phone or on yet another Zoom call.

  164. And they say, did you go to that restaurant last night?

  165. And you say, yeah.

  166. And did you have a good time?

  167. Yeah.

  168. And what was it like?

  169. Well it was a bit dead.

  170. It was a bit dead.

  171. Now a restaurant can be a bit dead.

  172. A bit quiet maybe.

  173. That's what we mean by that.

  174. But a person can't be a bit dead.

  175. The doctor doesn't go to the bedside and do what he does and then say, well he's a bit dead.

  176. Paul says, you were dead.

  177. Not just a bit dead.

  178. You were dead.

  179. Not poorly.

  180. Not, you know, spiritually struggling a little bit.

  181. No, dead.

  182. Not could be better.

  183. No, dead.

  184. Not suboptimal.

  185. No, dead.

  186. We had no knowledge of our spiritual condition and no concern for our spiritual condition and no power to improve our spiritual condition.

  187. We were dead.

  188. That's why we needed saved.

  189. Now this is spiritual death, not physical death.

  190. It's death to God.

  191. Just no link there at all.

  192. No connection at all.

  193. Just as if he doesn't exist.

  194. As though we exist totally without him.

  195. Dead to him.

  196. Dead to all that he is to us and all that he's done for us.

  197. Dead.

  198. And this condition of spiritual death, it does point to us being inactive and unresponsive towards God.

  199. But it points beyond that.

  200. It points us downright towards us being downright offensive to God.

  201. We were dead in our trespasses or transgressions in the NIV and sins.

  202. Trespasses.

  203. Transgression is when we deliberately cross a set of boundaries.

  204. I remember as a young boy, my mom and dad taking us on holiday down to that beautiful town in the Thames, Henley.

  205. And as we walked along the banks of the River Thames, just a few days after the regatta, if I remember rightly, and the schools were still in.

  206. That was always a big treat for me being in holiday in England when the schools were still on, when I was running about enjoying the freedom of that.

  207. And we saw a guy in a school uniform sitting under a tree.

  208. And we got talking to him and my dad said to him, is this part of the school grounds?

  209. And he said, no, no, I'm out of bounds.

  210. He said it in a much more posh voice than that.

  211. But he said, no, I'm out of bounds.

  212. And I thought, age seven, I thought, oh, I can't wait to go back to school and go out of bounds.

  213. That sounds really, really cool.

  214. Made it sound attractive to me.

  215. But the whole of humanity is out of bounds.

  216. Since the Garden of Eden.

  217. That's what transgression is.

  218. That's what trespass is.

  219. And sin is not quite the same.

  220. So there is an active part of this and there is an inactive part of this.

  221. And the inactive part is this idea that we just fall short of the mark.

  222. That God has said, this is how you should live.

  223. And we just always fall short of it.

  224. So these two things, transgressions, trespasses, and sins, point to the activity that comes with this spiritual death.

  225. That's why we needed saved.

  226. Number one, we were dead.

  227. Number two, we were duped.

  228. Still in verse two, here we are.

  229. Dead in the trespasses and sins of which we once walked, following the course of this world,

  230. following the prince of the power of the air.

  231. The spirit that's now at work in the sons of disobedience,

  232. among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh,

  233. carrying out the desires of the body and the mind.

  234. Now have a look at this with me.

  235. Because if our deadness was just described by verse three,

  236. we might get the impression that we were at least enjoying our existence.

  237. At least we were enjoying our complete independence of thought and action.

  238. We were really doing what we wanted to do.

  239. We were dead to God, took everything he had to give us and ignored him.

  240. But at least we were carrying out all our passions.

  241. Everything that we desired in the body and mind, we just did.

  242. If that was the only description of what it was like to be a dead person walking,

  243. spiritually speaking, then we might get the impression,

  244. well, at least there was some real liberty there.

  245. And of course, that's a huge attraction to people in not being a Christian.

  246. One of the reasons our friends that we're trying to reach with the gospel

  247. are very suspicious and don't want to get too close to this is

  248. they think they'll lose this amazing freedom they have.

  249. But it's a complete illusion.

  250. We are, verse two, following the course of this world.

  251. Following.

  252. Just zoning in on it.

  253. Following the prince of the power of the air,

  254. the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.

  255. People who celebrate and cherish their apparent freedom

  256. from having to love and serve God

  257. are blinded to the reality that they're actually,

  258. according to verse two,

  259. they're actually enslaved followers

  260. of demonic spiritual currents in the world.

  261. Whether they realize it or not,

  262. they're just like,

  263. they're just following the current of the river

  264. in the way that dead fish follows the current of the river.

  265. They follow the course of the world in rebellion to God.

  266. And whether the world, meaning not the planet,

  267. but the whole system,

  268. the whole of humanity instinctively ignoring our maker

  269. and rebelling against them,

  270. whether the world realizes it or not,

  271. we do not live like this entirely by ourselves.

  272. It may appear to suit us at times,

  273. but we nonetheless take the lead of another.

  274. We are being led.

  275. And we are duped.

  276. And we are following a current.

  277. And we are following a spirit of disobedience

  278. who is as prevalent as the air we breathe.

  279. What was it?

  280. I was thinking about it coming through in the car this morning.

  281. Was it the Hollies who wrote the song,

  282. Sometimes All I Need Is The Air That I Breathe?

  283. And the devil, that's all he needs,

  284. is the air that we breathe.

  285. Because anywhere there is air,

  286. he can be there.

  287. And he can be there with a spirit of disobedience.

  288. He can be there polluting the air, as it were, spiritually.

  289. And we're all rightly concerned about air pollution and air quality.

  290. But nobody cares about this.

  291. That there is a spiritual enemy of the human soul,

  292. that there is a spiritual enemy of God Almighty

  293. who pollutes the planet and pollutes the universe

  294. and pollutes the air, as it were, spiritually speaking.

  295. So that disobeying God is as natural and comfortable

  296. and almost as essential to life as breathing.

  297. And the only clue that we're given here,

  298. that we're not as free as we think we are,

  299. in verse 3,

  300. comes into view when we take stock of the havoc

  301. that our freedom unintentionally causes us.

  302. Why do we so invariably hurt our loved ones

  303. as we pursue our own agenda,

  304. as we do our own thing,

  305. not believing that we're being duped by anyone?

  306. Why is it then,

  307. if we're not duped,

  308. if we're not following someone else,

  309. if we're not marching to the beat of another

  310. drama, demonic influence,

  311. why then is it that doing our own thing

  312. involves hurting our loved ones

  313. and often harming ourselves?

  314. That's the clue that we're not really achieving what we want,

  315. that we're not really just doing what we want,

  316. that we are in the thrall of another.

  317. And to be as successful as he has been,

  318. Satan needs to be prepared himself,

  319. not to be believed in.

  320. And that's perfect for him.

  321. He masquerades as an angel of light.

  322. He doesn't need people to believe in him

  323. for him to be most effective.

  324. Humanity is dead to God,

  325. duped by Satan,

  326. hopelessly in his throne.

  327. That's why we need saved.

  328. We need saved because we're dead,

  329. because we're duped,

  330. thirdly because we're doomed.

  331. Verse,

  332. the very end of verse 3,

  333. we were by nature children of wrath

  334. like the rest of mankind.

  335. We were,

  336. the believers.

  337. This is meant to be opening our eyes

  338. to something glorious God has done.

  339. And this element of our desperate need

  340. to be saved takes us beyond this life,

  341. however it may work out for us,

  342. and into the eternity that lies ahead

  343. of every human soul,

  344. either cut off from God in hell

  345. or with him in glory.

  346. And Paul underscores the offense

  347. of our rebellion against the God

  348. who's given us life and breath

  349. and everything else.

  350. And he points us to the catastrophic impact

  351. of our deadness to him,

  352. of our trespasses,

  353. of our sins.

  354. It means that we're children of wrath.

  355. That doesn't just mean we've got a temper on us.

  356. That may or may not be true.

  357. It means that we inherit

  358. the just, pure,

  359. undeniably deserved wrath of God upon us.

  360. His wrath is not an outburst

  361. of his bad temper.

  362. His wrath is his,

  363. part of his perfection.

  364. It is his permanent,

  365. steady state,

  366. invariable,

  367. settled hostility

  368. to the rebellion

  369. against him of those

  370. to whom he has given life

  371. and everything.

  372. And because we've rebelled

  373. against an infinitely glorious being,

  374. our sin is infinitely offensive

  375. and grievous.

  376. It is an infinite crime

  377. and therefore the final experience

  378. of that wrath upon us

  379. is infinite punishment.

  380. More dreadful than we can even think of.

  381. And we are the children of wrath.

  382. NIV, I think,

  383. says the objects of wrath.

  384. We attract his wrath

  385. in the way that a magnet

  386. attracts iron filings.

  387. Or a way,

  388. in the way that a friend of mine

  389. seems to attract wasps.

  390. Friend of ours,

  391. she hates wasps,

  392. but she just seems to attract them.

  393. We are wrath magnets, friends.

  394. This is part of the wonder

  395. of the gospel.

  396. We are wrath magnets

  397. and we wouldn't even know about that.

  398. We wouldn't believe in it.

  399. We wouldn't care about it

  400. unless God told us about it

  401. in his word as he does.

  402. Now, it doesn't get any darker than this

  403. in understanding what we are

  404. basically like dead

  405. and duped

  406. and doomed

  407. to face the wrath of God.

  408. Paul wants our eyes

  409. to be open to this afresh.

  410. Why we need to be saved,

  411. there's the answer.

  412. We're dead.

  413. We're duped.

  414. We're doomed.

  415. Now then,

  416. that's why we need saved.

  417. How are we saved?

  418. Well, there could hardly be

  419. a greater contrast.

  420. Such a blessing

  421. to get out of the tunnel

  422. into the daylight,

  423. the stunning daylight

  424. of verse 4.

  425. But,

  426. God being rich in mercy,

  427. because of the great love

  428. with which he loved us,

  429. pause there.

  430. There's the first answer

  431. to how we're saved.

  432. The first thing to notice

  433. is that we're saved

  434. because God treated us

  435. with love.

  436. He treated us with love.

  437. His love of wrath magnets,

  438. sinful, ungrateful,

  439. rebellious,

  440. dismissive sinners

  441. against him.

  442. His love for us

  443. is the engine room

  444. that powered our salvation.

  445. He is rich in mercy.

  446. Notice verse 4.

  447. He's rich in mercy

  448. because of the great love

  449. with which he loved us.

  450. There's so much in that for us.

  451. So he loved us

  452. and he loved us

  453. with a great love.

  454. And that great love

  455. resulted in

  456. glorious riches of mercy

  457. towards us.

  458. We are saved

  459. because he has the capacity

  460. to infinitely love

  461. those who

  462. infinitely

  463. disrespect

  464. and hate him.

  465. How are we saved?

  466. Number one,

  467. God treated us

  468. with love.

  469. Number two,

  470. God gifted us

  471. with life.

  472. Verse 5.

  473. Even when we were dead.

  474. We've talked about that.

  475. In our trespass.

  476. We've talked about that.

  477. He made us alive

  478. together with Christ.

  479. By grace

  480. you have been saved.

  481. How are we saved?

  482. He treated us

  483. with love.

  484. He gifted us

  485. with new life.

  486. New spiritual life.

  487. And he did it

  488. by grace.

  489. I've already pointed out

  490. that Paul uses

  491. this phrase again

  492. in verse 8.

  493. By grace

  494. you've been saved.

  495. But it's as though

  496. with his forensic mind,

  497. his amazing forensic mind,

  498. led by the Holy Spirit.

  499. He wants us

  500. to understand

  501. when I talk about grace,

  502. this is the picture

  503. you've got to have in mind.

  504. And he does that

  505. by the language

  506. and the imagery

  507. that he's used

  508. about our deadness

  509. and our dupedness,

  510. not that there is

  511. such a word,

  512. and our doomedness,

  513. not that there is

  514. such a word.

  515. But they're the pictures

  516. he uses

  517. to make it crystal clear

  518. that we are saved

  519. entirely by God's initiative.

  520. It's a thing

  521. that God did

  522. for the dead

  523. and duped

  524. and doomed.

  525. That's what God's

  526. grace is.

  527. It's the unearned,

  528. undeserved action

  529. of God

  530. to treat us

  531. in the opposite way

  532. to how we would be.

  533. He would be

  534. entirely justified

  535. in treating us.

  536. And it's necessarily,

  537. entirely at his instigation.

  538. It has to be

  539. because we were dead

  540. entirely by his execution.

  541. It couldn't be more clear,

  542. could it?

  543. When we were dead,

  544. he did something

  545. to make us alive.

  546. That's grace.

  547. We didn't long for him

  548. until he awoke

  549. that longing within us.

  550. So you might be thinking,

  551. I don't know about that.

  552. I think there was something

  553. in me that began

  554. to reach out to God

  555. and then he responded

  556. to that.

  557. No, it's the other way around.

  558. Yes, you did begin

  559. to long for him.

  560. Something did awaken in you,

  561. but it wasn't you

  562. that awakened it.

  563. We didn't feel

  564. the conviction of our sin

  565. until he blessed us

  566. with that conviction

  567. by the work of his Holy Spirit.

  568. We didn't decide

  569. to follow Jesus

  570. in and of ourselves.

  571. We were dead.

  572. We were duped.

  573. We were doomed.

  574. He did the work.

  575. He brought to life

  576. our spiritual corpse.

  577. We had no part in this.

  578. Verse 8,

  579. By grace you've been saved

  580. through faith,

  581. and this is not your own doing.

  582. And this refers to both

  583. the grace by which

  584. you've been saved

  585. and the faith

  586. that connects us

  587. to that grace.

  588. We didn't even have it in us

  589. to work up the faith

  590. to act towards God.

  591. Both the grace that saves

  592. and the faith

  593. that by his grace

  594. connects us to his grace

  595. is not our doing.

  596. It is the gift of God.

  597. It is not the result

  598. of our works,

  599. my works,

  600. my dead,

  601. duped,

  602. doomed works

  603. so that no one may boast.

  604. Friends,

  605. are our eyes open

  606. to this wonder?

  607. Are our eyes open

  608. to this wonder?

  609. Do you see how stunning

  610. this work of grace

  611. is in your life?

  612. But we need to know

  613. how we are saved

  614. a bit more.

  615. We need to know

  616. the mechanics of salvation.

  617. What was it he did?

  618. How did he make

  619. wrath magnets

  620. love magnets?

  621. How did that happen?

  622. Did he just change

  623. his mind on a whim?

  624. Well, I hope not

  625. because he might

  626. change it back

  627. on a whim.

  628. Of course he did.

  629. Did he begin

  630. to recalibrate

  631. his feelings

  632. of appalled

  633. abhorrence

  634. towards our rebellion?

  635. Did he begin

  636. to sort of just

  637. move things

  638. that were crimes

  639. into not being crimes?

  640. Did he decriminalize

  641. some stuff

  642. just to give us

  643. a bit of a pass?

  644. No.

  645. He achieved

  646. something stunning

  647. in and by his son,

  648. the Lord Jesus.

  649. He treated us

  650. with love,

  651. he gifted us

  652. with life,

  653. and he seated

  654. us with Christ.

  655. There's the third answer,

  656. verse 6.

  657. This is how he did it.

  658. He raised us up

  659. with him

  660. and seated us

  661. with him

  662. in the heavenly places

  663. in Christ Jesus.

  664. Now this is

  665. theological shorthand.

  666. Paul expects us

  667. to remember

  668. what he's already said.

  669. God didn't just

  670. make us alive.

  671. He didn't just

  672. gift us with life.

  673. Notice verse 5.

  674. Even when we were

  675. dead in our trespasses,

  676. he made us alive

  677. together with Christ.

  678. Together with Christ.

  679. There is something here

  680. about the way

  681. that he has connected us

  682. to his son,

  683. the Lord Jesus,

  684. that makes this gift

  685. of life a reality

  686. for us.

  687. Why did his son,

  688. the Lord Jesus,

  689. need to be made alive

  690. as well?

  691. Why did he need

  692. to be made alive?

  693. Well, remember

  694. chapter 1,

  695. what you've already seen.

  696. Chapter 1, verse 6,

  697. to the praise

  698. of his glorious grace,

  699. with which he has

  700. blessed us

  701. in the beloved.

  702. That's Jesus.

  703. In him,

  704. we have redemption

  705. through his blood,

  706. meaning through

  707. his blood shed,

  708. meaning through

  709. the giving of his life,

  710. through his death.

  711. We have redemption

  712. through his blood,

  713. through his death,

  714. the forgiveness

  715. of our trespasses,

  716. according to the riches

  717. of his grace,

  718. which he lavished upon us

  719. in all wisdom

  720. and insight.

  721. God sent his perfect son,

  722. who was entirely alive

  723. to him,

  724. unlike me,

  725. who's dead to him,

  726. who was never duped

  727. by Satan,

  728. unlike me,

  729. who was entirely unworthy

  730. of God's wrath,

  731. unlike me,

  732. and he sent his son

  733. to join us

  734. in death

  735. by bearing our sin,

  736. the awful offense

  737. of it on the cross,

  738. and bearing the wrath

  739. of God for it

  740. on the cross.

  741. Listen to this little poem

  742. written by

  743. Lance Pibworth.

  744. You may not have heard

  745. of him,

  746. but listen to this.

  747. All my sin of every kind,

  748. all the thoughts

  749. that stain the mind,

  750. all the evils

  751. I design,

  752. laid on him.

  753. All the ways

  754. my feet have strayed,

  755. all the idols

  756. I have made,

  757. all the times

  758. I have not prayed,

  759. laid on him.

  760. All the told

  761. and acted lies.

  762. All success

  763. and all the tries,

  764. sins that I legitimize,

  765. laid on him.

  766. All that sinks me

  767. in the mire,

  768. all the times

  769. of base desire,

  770. all that needs

  771. a cleansing fire,

  772. laid on him.

  773. All my misdirected powers,

  774. all my many wasted hours,

  775. all my dreams

  776. of ivory towers,

  777. laid on him.

  778. All that makes

  779. my spirit cold,

  780. all that keeps me

  781. from the fold,

  782. all that dims

  783. my father's gold,

  784. laid on him.

  785. All the times

  786. I've grieved the spirit,

  787. all the nature

  788. I inherit,

  789. all the punishment

  790. I merit,

  791. laid on him,

  792. laid on him,

  793. God's own dear son,

  794. laid on him,

  795. the holy one,

  796. blotting out

  797. the noonday sun.

  798. when laid on him.

  799. That's the reality

  800. of what happened.

  801. That's why Jesus

  802. had to be raised

  803. from death,

  804. because that's the death

  805. he died.

  806. And we already know

  807. chapter one,

  808. what is the immeasurable

  809. greatness of his power

  810. towards us who believe,

  811. according to the working

  812. of his great might.

  813. Verse 20,

  814. are you following?

  815. that he worked in Christ

  816. when he raised him

  817. from the dead

  818. and seated him

  819. at his right hand

  820. in the heavenly places.

  821. Job done.

  822. Forever.

  823. God's wrath

  824. satisfied

  825. because it was laid

  826. on him,

  827. poured out on him.

  828. His love for sinners

  829. upheld

  830. so the wrath

  831. magnets

  832. could become

  833. love magnets

  834. because the wrath

  835. was transferred

  836. onto Jesus.

  837. And the perfection

  838. of the Lord Jesus

  839. was put onto those

  840. who would put their

  841. trust in him,

  842. who were awakened

  843. to have the faith

  844. to trust in his grace.

  845. That's us

  846. if we're in him.

  847. And so his death

  848. was my death.

  849. His grave

  850. was my grave.

  851. His resurrection

  852. will be my resurrection.

  853. And when he sits

  854. in glory

  855. at the right hand

  856. of the Father,

  857. he makes it possible

  858. for me one day

  859. to sit in glory

  860. at the right hand

  861. of the Father.

  862. So in effect,

  863. now that has happened

  864. because he has done

  865. everything for me.

  866. Everything that he's done

  867. is what has been done

  868. in the name of those

  869. who trust in him

  870. by his grace.

  871. And therefore,

  872. because God has raised him

  873. and seated him

  874. at his right hand,

  875. that's us.

  876. Who are there,

  877. a man in the glory,

  878. keeping our seat.

  879. No social distancing.

  880. So we're saved

  881. by our union

  882. in death

  883. and resurrection

  884. and kingly reign

  885. with the Lord Jesus.

  886. Now as we close

  887. this morning,

  888. why are we saved?

  889. Why we need saved,

  890. how we are saved,

  891. why we're saved.

  892. Very briefly,

  893. two reasons

  894. that this passage gives us.

  895. A future reason

  896. and a present reason.

  897. The future reason

  898. is verse 7.

  899. So that in the coming ages

  900. he might show the kindness,

  901. sorry,

  902. show the immeasurable riches

  903. of his grace

  904. and kindness towards us

  905. in Christ Jesus.

  906. It's amazing, isn't it,

  907. how Ephesians takes us

  908. from eternity past

  909. when we were chosen in Christ

  910. before the foundation

  911. of the world

  912. to eternity to come.

  913. Verse 7 just about explains

  914. why everything is

  915. the way it is.

  916. It is so that

  917. in the coming ages

  918. he might show

  919. the immeasurable riches,

  920. immeasurable riches

  921. of his grace

  922. and kindness

  923. towards us

  924. in Christ Jesus.

  925. Our eternal,

  926. ever-increasing delight

  927. and satisfaction

  928. will be in him.

  929. That's why we're saved.

  930. God wants people

  931. to be able to

  932. adore that forever

  933. and flourish in that.

  934. And it's not just

  935. that we won't get tired of it.

  936. You know how sometimes

  937. you go to somewhere lovely

  938. and the person who lives there

  939. in a beautiful place

  940. they tell you

  941. how every morning

  942. they get up

  943. and they open the curtains

  944. and they see the view

  945. and they say,

  946. I never tire of it.

  947. Well, that's a lovely thing.

  948. But this picture here

  949. in verse 7

  950. is not just saying

  951. don't worry,

  952. you'll never tire of it.

  953. It's saying the opposite.

  954. It's saying

  955. you will never cease

  956. to be increasingly

  957. thrilled by it

  958. for all of eternity

  959. because it's immeasurable.

  960. Why are we saved?

  961. We're saved for his glory.

  962. And we are most,

  963. most happy

  964. when he is glorified.

  965. We are fed

  966. and nourished

  967. and satisfied

  968. eternally.

  969. Every longing

  970. satisfied.

  971. Everything we long for now

  972. that we are sure

  973. is not found in God

  974. when we get to glory

  975. we'll find it was

  976. always found in God.

  977. Why are we saved?

  978. Verse 7

  979. the eternal perspective

  980. and then verse 10

  981. the present thing.

  982. Where is workmanship?

  983. Interesting,

  984. at the end of verse 9

  985. not saved by works

  986. so that no one can boast.

  987. It's almost as though

  988. Paul says now.

  989. Funnily enough,

  990. talking about works,

  991. talking about works

  992. that don't save you.

  993. We are his workmanship.

  994. We are the output

  995. of God's work.

  996. He had some corpses

  997. and not only

  998. were they spiritual corpses,

  999. they were duped.

  1000. They were completely

  1001. in the thrall

  1002. of Satan

  1003. and demonic forces.

  1004. and they were doomed.

  1005. They were under

  1006. my wrath,

  1007. says God,

1008. and I had this mess.

  1009. And now look,

1010. they're going to spend forever.

  1011. Magnify my son,

  1012. glorying in

1013. my eternal kindness to them.

  1014. We are his workmanship.

  1015. But he has work

  1016. cut out for us.

  1017. Notice verse 10.

  1018. Created in Christ Jesus

  1019. for good works

  1020. which God prepared beforehand

1021. that we should walk in them.

  1022. You know that phrase,

  1023. you've got your work

  1024. cut out for you.

  1025. Well,

1026. God has got your work

  1027. cut out for you,

  1028. sisters and brothers.

1029. If you belong to him,

1030. if this gospel is yours,

1031. if this experience is yours,

1032. if you read this this morning

  1033. and hear this

  1034. unpacked and say,

  1035. yeah,

  1036. that's me,

  1037. that's exactly

  1038. what God has done.

  1039. If he's begun

1040. to open your eyes again to it,

  1041. there's work for you

  1042. to do now.

  1043. And we're told

  1044. in this passage

1045. that we're saved by grace

  1046. and we're also told

1047. that we serve by grace.

  1048. There's work to do.

  1049. But the work

  1050. does not

  1051. pay God off

1052. for his grace to us.

1053. The work that we do

  1054. for him

  1055. is by his grace.

  1056. It is as though

  1057. if I take out

  1058. my debit card,

  1059. I wouldn't do this

  1060. in Aberdeen,

1061. but I'll do it in Edinburgh.

  1062. I'll take the risk.

1063. I'll take out my debit card.

  1064. It's as though

  1065. rather than me

  1066. trying to do things

  1067. for God

  1068. to pay him

1069. and to respond to him

  1070. for what he's done,

  1071. I'm actually putting myself

  1072. further in his debt

  1073. because the bill

  1074. goes to him

  1075. every month

  1076. for the grace

  1077. that I need

  1078. to serve him.

  1079. And he delights

  1080. to pay it.

  1081. He doesn't hold me

  1082. accountable for that.

  1083. So we're saved

  1084. by grace.

  1085. I'll now put this

  1086. carefully away.

  1087. We're saved by grace

  1088. and we serve

  1089. by grace.

1090. And God has good works

  1091. prepared for us.

1092. We just need to rescue

1093. that as we close from,

  1094. we need to rescue

  1095. good works

  1096. from the bad books,

  1097. don't we?

  1098. Isn't it strange

1099. that we live in a world

  1100. where being a do-gooder

  1101. is a negative thing?

1102. But it has that kind

  1103. of horrible,

  1104. prickly person

  1105. who thinks they're

  1106. better than everybody else

  1107. and goes through life

  1108. doing good

  1109. to make it look

  1110. how good they are,

1111. to show their own goodness.

  1112. That's not what

  1113. this is about.

1114. That's not gospel good works.

  1115. As you crack on

  1116. through the book

  1117. of Ephesians,

  1118. especially when you get

  1119. to chapter four,

1120. to the end of it

  1121. you're going to see

  1122. a list

  1123. of supernatural

  1124. ways to live,

  1125. being kind

  1126. to one another,

  1127. forgiving one another,

  1128. submitting to one another,

  1129. husbands and wives,

  1130. children and parents,

  1131. and slaves and masters,

  1132. employees and employers,

1133. and all the rest of it

  1134. that's there.

  1135. That's what Paul's

  1136. pointing to

  1137. in Embryo now.

1138. And when you get there,

  1139. maybe you'll remember

  1140. that we're as workmanship,

1141. we're created in Christ Jesus

  1142. for good works

  1143. that God prepared beforehand

  1144. that we should walk

  1145. in them.

  1146. So my friends,

  1147. I'm finishing now.

  1148. And I wonder

  1149. where you are

  1150. with this this morning

1151. as we draw it to a close.

  1152. I wonder,

  1153. have you seen that

1154. just as I came in

  1155. this morning

  1156. and was asked,

  1157. have you any

  1158. COVID symptoms?

  1159. And I was gladly

  1160. able to say,

  1161. no I don't.

  1162. But I wonder

  1163. some of the other

1164. symptoms of the whole season.

  1165. Are you beginning

  1166. to find your eyes

  1167. growing dim with cataract

  1168. towards the Lord

  1169. and what he's done

1170. and what he is doing?

  1171. Your heart growing cold

  1172. towards him.

  1173. It's interesting

  1174. that the whole book

  1175. ends like this.

  1176. Grace be with all

1177. who love our Lord Jesus Christ

  1178. with a love

  1179. incorruptible.

  1180. Incorruptible.

  1181. that can't be corrupted

  1182. by all that life

  1183. can throw at it

  1184. to take our eyes

  1185. off the ball.

1186. May that be true of us.

  1187. And for anyone

  1188. who doesn't know

  1189. the Lord Jesus

  1190. this morning

  1191. who by his grace

  1192. might recognize

  1193. themselves

  1194. in this passage

  1195. because of the fact

  1196. that,

  1197. because of what

  1198. Paul says here,

  1199. that the potential

  1200. is amazing.

  1201. you're now listening

  1202. to someone

  1203. who was by nature

  1204. an object of wrath

  1205. like the rest

  1206. of mankind.

  1207. I once was lost

  1208. but now I'm found.

  1209. I was blind

  1210. but now I see

  1211. and that can happen

  1212. to you.

  1213. And if you sense

  1214. that God is

  1215. doing a work

  1216. in your heart,

  1217. if you sense

  1218. that there is

  1219. just the beginnings

  1220. of a stirring,

  1221. then by his grace

  1222. get hold of that.

  1223. and move towards

  1224. the Lord Jesus

  1225. for salvation.

  1226. Father,

  1227. please,

  1228. we pray,

  1229. help us,

  1230. have mercy on us.

  1231. We so easily

  1232. become calcified.

  1233. We so easily

  1234. become dead

  1235. and blind

  1236. to the wonders

  1237. of what you've done.

  1238. We so easily

  1239. become enthralled

  1240. by nothing

  1241. of any lasting

  1242. consequence.

  1243. We lose our

  1244. footing.

  1245. Our hearts

  1246. grow cold

  1247. towards you.

  1248. Please rekindle

  1249. in us

  1250. by the eyes

  1251. of our hearts

  1252. being enlightened

  1253. to see these things.

  1254. For the glory

  1255. of our Savior

  1256. we ask it.

  1257. Amen.

  1258. a

  1259. to

  1260. a

  1261. another

  1262. move.

  1263. To

  1264. a

  1265. two

  1266. are

  1267. going to monitor

  1268. and

  1269. to
