  1. I'm pleased to have a seat and let me invite you now to grab a Bible if you have one there

  2. or look it out on your phone or whatever you need to do to get God's Word open in front of you and

  3. turn to, I guess we're going to be in Genesis 1 and 2 and 3 this evening. We might dot in and

  4. around elsewhere as well, but it's so important we have God's Word open in front of us. So tonight

  5. we're going to be thinking about what the Bible teaches about human beings. As we continue this

  6. series that we've been in over the last few weeks, and I really hope you found it helpful to think

  7. about some of these things, to think about what the Bible teaches us about humanity. And I guess

  8. since the idea of this series is it's designed to help us think biblically about some of the big

  9. issues of our day, as we unpack what God says in His Word, what I want to do as we think about

  10. humanity is through that lens. I want us to think about this whole issue of racism, to think

  11. biblically about it so that we are equipped both to understand it and then be able to articulate to

  12. the watching world our Christian response to this issue as it's presented itself in our day, right?

  13. And in so doing, offer to the world a beautiful picture of Jesus Christ, who is the great lover and

  14. transformer of human hearts. Because here's perhaps, just give you a little insight into my thinking

  15. behind this, what I've become increasingly convinced of over the years as I've journeyed with Jesus,

  16. is what the Bible says about human beings is both wonderfully dignifying and its holy

  17. realistic. And the gospel which we encounter, as we encounter Jesus in the Word, is the hope for

  18. our nation, is the hope for the people that we rub shoulders with every day, is Jesus Christ.

  19. So you with me on this one? Okay, you can give me some kind of nod or a, yeah, this has really

  20. excited me this week as I've prepared for it. So I really hope this thrills your heart as well as we

  21. think about humanity and what the Bible says about humanity. But let me start by taking you to the

  22. city of Rome. Okay, I don't know if any of you ever been to Rome. I've never been, it's on my kind of

  23. bucket list to go to. But by far the most famous landmark in that city that I reported 6.4 million

  24. people visited last year is the Roman Colosseum, right? I'm sure some of us in this room may be

  25. watching this online. I've been to the Roman Colosseum. Incredible when you think about it.

  26. Constructed in 70 AD, right? That is an old, old building. 70 AD. And in its heyday, it held

  27. something like 50 to 80,000 people, which is a huge number of people when you think about it.

  28. No wonder it's one of the most iconic structures ever built in human history, right? Incredible

  29. feat of architecture. But if you travel to Rome today, what you'll see, I guess, is what they call

  30. a glorious ruin, right? A glorious ruin. Because despite retaining the essence of its original beauty,

  31. the Colosseum has been marred to the extent that what exists today is but a shadow of the glory that it

  32. once had. And it's interesting because that is what C.S. Lewis, who's one of the great Christian

  33. thinkers from, I guess, the last few hundred years, C.S. Lewis, the great Christian thinker, as he observed

  34. people, said that we are exactly like the Roman Colosseum, right? Human beings. We are a glorious ruin.

  35. And so what I want to do tonight is just kind of latch onto those two words,

  36. that Lewis uses,

  37. and unpack a little bit of what the Bible story says about these things. A glorious ruin.

  38. And so here is what the Bible teaches us about humanity, right? Friends, we are glorious.

  39. Human beings, glorious. If you've got it there, Genesis 1 and 2,

  40. the opening chapters of the Bible

  41. exclaim this at us, that human beings are

  42. glorious. So we kind of tap into the Bible story at Genesis 1,

  43. in the beginning was God, this God who has eternally been there, this God who has chosen to reveal

  44. himself to us. We're introduced to this delightful God that we get in Genesis 1 and Genesis 2, who

  45. eternally exists

  46. as a community of one God in three persons,

  47. Father, Son,

  48. Son, and Spirit, who have always been eternally and lovingly delighting in one another.

  49. Okay? Our God is triune, right? He is three in one. And because he is three in one, he is relational.

  50. It's who he is. He's relational. He is love.

  51. Okay? Now,

  52. it's so important to park these kind of theological ideas because they're so important

  53. to what we'll come on to see in a little while.

  54. Okay? Our God is triune. He is relational.

  55. He is love.

  56. And this God creates the world. He didn't need to create the world.

  57. He wasn't lacking in anything.

  58. This God spoke and things came into being.

  59. This God spoke and beauty happens.

  60. Of an overflow of who he is, he creates the world.

  61. Days 1 to 3 that we get in the Genesis 1 and 2 account, God forms the world.

  62. Days 4 to 6, God fills the world.

  63. And as the climax of God's good design, he creates human beings.

  64. And he breathes life into them.

  65. He creates them, body and soul.

  66. He creates them intentionally and complementary as male and female.

  67. Friends, meaning that our bodies, our very bodies,

  68. carry inherent and wonderful dignity.

  69. Right? Have you ever thought about that?

  70. The body matters.

  71. Matters.

  72. Because, and this is the key phrase,

  73. God made us in his image.

  74. If you remember one thing from tonight,

  75. and I really hope you remember more than one thing,

  76. but if you're going to pick one, pick that one.

  77. Okay? God made us in his image.

  78. Here's what we get in Genesis 1.27.

  79. Here's our first pit stop tonight.

  80. So God created mankind in his own image.

  81. In the image of God, he created them.

  82. Male and female, he created them.

  83. It's a wonderful bit of intricate Hebrew poetry there.

  84. God made us in his image.

  85. And of no other created thing,

  86. in the opening account of the Bible,

  87. is that said to be true.

  88. No animal is made in the image of God,

  89. yet human beings are.

  90. And here's what that means.

  91. That means that human life,

  92. marvelous,

  93. every human life,

  94. marvelous,

  95. valued,

  96. known,

  97. bestowed with dignity,

  98. that is inherent,

  99. right,

  100. rather than earned.

  101. Why?

  102. Because each and every life,

  103. from the moment of conception,

  104. no matter how good or how bad,

  105. we might deem somebody to be,

  106. no matter how responsive,

  107. or useful,

  108. we might think someone is,

  109. is a life that is made in the very image of God.

  110. So the Bible teaches about what it fundamentally means

  111. to be a human being.

  112. Right?

  113. Maybe you're here tonight and you're thinking,

  114. I don't know,

  115. am I really worth anything?

  116. Is my life worth anything?

  117. Is it worth carrying on going?

  118. Because life's hard.

  119. We'll see that in a minute,

  120. why it's hard.

  121. But friends,

  122. this bestows,

  123. or pronounces dignity over you that is inherent.

  124. Right?

  125. This is who you are.

  126. You are fearfully and wonderfully made

  127. in His loving image.

  128. And it's no wonder,

  129. isn't it,

  130. that many of us have struggled during this season.

  131. Because if we're made in the image of our relational gods,

  132. friends,

  133. it shouldn't surprise us that we are made for relationships

  134. with one another.

  135. It's been difficult,

  136. hasn't it?

  137. But this is who our God is.

  138. And He pronounces dignity over each and every single human life.

  139. And from that,

  140. friends,

  141. I hope you can see

  142. why any kind of racism in our society,

  143. any kind of prejudice,

  144. any feeling of superiority,

  145. any mindset that devalues human beings

  146. for whatever reason that is,

  147. and fails to see all human life is precious.

  148. But as you see,

  149. it is so stomach-wretchingly wrong.

  150. It is sinful,

  151. it is sinful,

  152. and it's a very insult to our Maker who made us in His image.

  153. Because all life matters to God.

  154. all life matters to God.

  155. And do you know what that means?

  156. I was thinking about this week,

  157. if that's the kind of pebble in the ocean,

  158. if you like,

  159. in the pond,

  160. and all the ripples are coming out from it.

  161. If you think about what that means,

  162. friends,

  163. it means that when any human life is under threat,

  164. when inherent human rights are being overlooked,

  165. when people are hurting,

  166. when people are struggling,

  167. for the many,

  168. many reasons that you and I do in life,

  169. that we as Christians,

  170. friends,

  171. we should be the first ones on the scene to help.

  172. And speak up for those who can't speak for themselves,

  173. and act with compassion and love,

  174. because we have this understanding of what human life is.

  175. And we have this understanding of who our God is.

  176. You know,

  177. it's a conviction like this that prompted William Wilberforce

  178. to make a stand for people trafficking.

  179. Well,

  180. at the end of the 18th century,

  181. he said this,

  182. this is his famous line,

  183. God Almighty has set before me two great objects,

  184. the suppression of the slave trade,

  185. and the reformation of manners.

  186. Don't know how he got on with the second one,

  187. but he certainly succeeded with the first.

  188. You know,

  189. let's make it our prayer from tonight,

  190. that God would grant us something more of his heart for human beings.

  191. You know,

  192. recently Tim Farron,

  193. I don't know if some of you maybe picked this up,

  194. it was an interview that he did,

  195. Tim Farron's the MP for Westmoreland and Lonsdale,

  196. and from what I can understand,

  197. he's a believer,

  198. and he made what I thought was a huge challenge to the church

  199. in an interview that he gave recently,

  200. right?

  201. He said that too often,

  202. the only time that he hears passionately from Christians in his region,

  203. in his constituency,

  204. the only time he ever hears from them,

  205. is on the issues of abortion or euthanasia,

  206. right?

  207. Now,

  208. good and right that we have convictions about the beginning of life,

  209. and the end of life,

  210. but then he said,

  211. if only I heard from the same Christians on issues to do with child poverty,

  212. or single parents struggling to put food on the table,

  213. or families struggling to make ends meet,

  214. or people breaking down with mental health,

  215. all these different issues concerning humanity as they arise in my constituency,

  216. if only I heard from those Christians then.

  217. I think that's a huge challenge to us.

  218. Do you not think?

  219. As we think about what it means to shine forth the love of Jesus in our community,

  220. I think that's a huge challenge,

  221. to take our understanding,

  222. our biblical understanding of humanity,

  223. and our love for human beings made in God's image,

  224. and look for ways to apply it consistently across the board,

  225. as we serve our community,

  226. to think about how we could be salt and light in this city of ours.

  227. Human beings are glorious because they're made in God's image.

  228. Now,

  229. here's a thing to think about just as we park this,

  230. maybe sit on this for a moment.

  231. Here's the thing.

  232. Human beings are glorious,

  233. but I'd imagine that you and I will be hard-pressed to find people in our day-to-day lives

  234. who wouldn't affirm everything that I've just said there,

  235. regardless of whether they're Christian or not.

  236. Probably true, isn't it?

  237. Don't need to be a Christian to believe a lot of what I've just said.

  238. And we recognize, don't we,

  239. and we're so thankful for many non-Christian people and organizations

  240. who are doing wonderful work the world over.

  241. We're so thankful for everything that they do to help in so many situations.

  242. I remember when we traveled to Mozambique when I was a student,

  243. in the middle of nowhere,

  244. seeing Oxfam doing their thing,

  245. thinking that is brilliant.

  246. It's brilliant.

  247. So thankful for what they do the world over.

  248. But perhaps increasingly,

  249. in my conversations with people,

  250. having explained my Christian moorings,

  251. friends,

  252. here's how I always gently and lovingly probe people to think about their worldview

  253. and how they think about human beings.

  254. Just to ask good questions,

  255. lovingly.

  256. Okay?

  257. So,

  258. that sense of right and wrong that exists inside each one of us,

  259. that sense of right and wrong,

  260. we know that things are right,

  261. we know when things are wrong.

  262. Friends,

  263. where does that come from?

  264. Where does that come from?

  265. Human life,

  266. what is it?

  267. What is it?

  268. These human rights that we speak of,

  269. that are so important,

  270. I remember studying them in my legal days,

  271. these human rights that we speak of,

  272. when does somebody qualify for them?

  273. And when does somebody disqualify for them?

  274. And who decides that?

  275. And on what grounds do they decide that?

  276. She's just asking questions of people's worldview.

  277. How do we know?

  278. These are big questions, right?

  279. These are big, big questions,

  280. but it's so important that we think about these things,

  281. think about these things.

  282. You know,

  283. I find it fascinating,

  284. you know,

  285. you've heard of a guy called Jordan Peterson,

  286. right?

  287. It's big in our culture at the minute,

  288. Jordan Peterson,

  289. who,

  290. by his own admission,

  291. is not a follower of Jesus,

  292. but he was asked recently in an interview

  293. about this whole idea of human dignity,

  294. and he made this fascinating observation

  295. about the image of God.

  296. He said really simply,

  297. and I've kind of shortened it down,

  298. he said simply,

  299. this is the cornerstone of civilization,

  300. and we ignore it at our peril.

  301. It's not fascinating for somebody

  302. that doesn't believe in God at all,

  303. but understands that our Western culture,

  304. friends,

  305. is built on this understanding

  306. that human beings have an inherent dignity

  307. because they are made in the image of God.

  308. I find that incredible to think about.

  309. We've got to move on,

  310. our time is kind of speeding on.

  311. Friends,

  312. never lose sight of the fact

  313. that human beings are made glorious.

  314. They are glorious

  315. because they are made

  316. in the very image of God.

  317. Isn't that a wonderful worldview

  318. to have as a Christian?

  319. I think we should go on the offensive

  320. with that more.

  321. I'm trying to help people understand

  322. this is what the Bible teaches

  323. about human life.

  324. Human beings are glorious,

  325. but then think about the flip side of that,

  326. what I said earlier about the C.S. Lewis quote.

  327. It also teaches us

  328. that we are a ruin.

  329. We're a ruin.

  330. In the Bible story,

  331. after Genesis 1 and 2,

  332. we get Genesis 3.

  333. Adam and Eve in the garden,

  334. one rule.

  335. Don't eat from that tree.

  336. Don't eat from the tree.

  337. And unpack that.

  338. We really need to see

  339. what's going on there.

  340. God's saying to them,

  341. it's only by trusting me,

  342. by submitting to my gracious

  343. and my good kingship over you.

  344. In relationship with me

  345. is the place where you'll flourish,

  346. right, as human beings.

  347. It's in the sphere of grace

  348. that you will find your purpose

  349. and you will find joy

  350. as my creatures.

  351. Friends, which is why

  352. if we're looking to know

  353. blessing in our lives,

  354. we're looking to know

  355. what life to the full is.

  356. Do you see how it's to be found

  357. in exactly the same place here

  358. in a sphere of grace

  359. and relationship

  360. with this good God?

  361. But Adam fails to lead

  362. as God told him to.

  363. Eve fails to listen

  364. as God told her to.

  365. They believe the whispers of Satan

  366. who would just say,

  367. did God really say?

  368. Did God really say?

  369. Which underneath it

  370. is this question,

  371. is God really good?

  372. Is he really good?

  373. What happens?

  374. Eve takes the fruit

  375. and friends,

  376. it's an act of deliberate rebellion

  377. against God.

  378. It's the very definition of sin

  379. as it enters the human condition

  380. and mars each and every human heart.

  381. We are by nature rebels

  382. against this God,

  383. against our creator.

  384. We don't want his rule in our lives.

  385. We want our rule.

  386. And all of a sudden,

  387. after Genesis 3

  388. and the Bible story,

  389. you start to get words like shame

  390. and guilt and anger

  391. and envy

  392. and murder

  393. and pride.

  394. These weren't here

  395. in Genesis 1 and Genesis 2.

  396. The writer trying to show us

  397. the ripple effects of sin

  398. as it's affected

  399. each and every single human being

  400. and affected our world.

  401. And you get death.

  402. Death.

  403. It seems to me that

  404. we need to maybe re-grasp

  405. a sense of the fact

  406. that death wasn't the way

  407. that it was supposed to be.

  408. You know, each and every time

  409. figures are read out to us

  410. on our news at the minute,

  411. we should be grieving.

  412. Right?

  413. We should be thinking about

  414. those who have lost loved ones

  415. because death is anything

  416. but natural.

  417. This wasn't the way

  418. God designed it.

  419. And it seems to me

  420. that as Christians

  421. we should be

  422. modelling to the world

  423. what real joy looks like.

  424. What real joy looks like.

  425. And we should be modelling

  426. to the world

  427. what it is to truly mourn.

  428. Right?

  429. Truly mourn.

  430. And grieve.

  431. That death isn't the way

  432. it was supposed to be.

  433. None of these things, friends,

  434. were in God's good design.

  435. And so here,

  436. and I think this is really important

  437. if you want to grasp this

  438. for what we'll come back to

  439. in a minute,

  440. there's a three-way disruption

  441. going on here

  442. as sin enters the world.

  443. A three-way disruption

  444. to the harmony

  445. that exists in Genesis 1

  446. and Genesis 2.

  447. Think about it

  448. in three directions.

  449. Okay, there's an upward disruption

  450. that our sin has caused

  451. that severed the relationship

  452. between us and our Creator.

  453. There's an outward disruption

  454. between us

  455. and our fellow human beings.

  456. And there's an inward disruption

  457. in our hearts

  458. and in our minds

  459. as the whole of creation

  460. suffers the effects

  461. of the sin sickness.

  462. Okay?

  463. I find it amazing

  464. how many of these themes,

  465. there's only one of you

  466. that's ever thought about this.

  467. And once I've mentioned this

  468. you'll start seeing them everywhere, right?

  469. How many of these themes

  470. are reflected

  471. in some of our culture's

  472. most loved stories?

  473. Okay, do you know

  474. our girls love to watch,

  475. they love to watch

  476. Beauty and the Beast.

  477. You ever watched that,

  478. Beauty and the Beast?

  479. Okay, it's a catchy tune or two,

  480. Beauty and the Beast.

  481. If you haven't watched it,

  482. okay,

  483. Disney Plus,

  484. seven-day free trial,

  485. you can get it over half-term,

  486. knock yourself out, okay?

  487. Beauty and the Beast.

  488. The whole story is about this

  489. prince,

  490. who fails to be

  491. the person

  492. that he's called to be.

  493. And there's a curse

  494. over him

  495. and the castle.

  496. Right?

  497. The castle, him,

  498. and everything in it,

  499. all of the people

  500. are under this dark cloud

  501. of her curse.

  502. Why?

  503. Because of the beast's failure

  504. to be the person

  505. that he was called to be.

  506. And everything

  507. and everyone in the castle

  508. is longing one day

  509. to be freed from the curse.

  510. And the only way

  511. that that will happen

  512. is by an act

  513. of sacrificial love.

  514. And you begin to see

  515. these themes everywhere

  516. in our stories

  517. that we love

  518. in our culture.

  519. It's exactly the same

  520. with the sin sickness

  521. that the Bible

  522. is talking about.

  523. Friends,

  524. it's how we make sense

  525. of a world full of pain

  526. and hurt.

  527. Death,

  528. as I said,

  529. was never the way

  530. it was supposed to be.

  531. Friends,

  532. when it comes to

  533. racism,

  534. when it comes to prejudice,

  535. when it comes to sin,

  536. have you ever asked yourself

  537. why it's even here

  538. in the first place?

  539. You know,

  540. in a big lens,

  541. understanding of things,

  542. friends,

  543. these things exist.

  544. They originate from the sin

  545. in every human heart

  546. against God

  547. or sin against Him.

  548. Right?

  549. It's really popular

  550. for people to say,

  551. I cannot believe

  552. we're still talking

  553. about these things

  554. in 2020.

  555. And you know

  556. what they mean.

  557. Right?

  558. You know what people mean.

  559. And we're so thankful

  560. for the developments

  561. that we have made

  562. as a culture

  563. over the last

  564. kind of few decades

  565. on a lot of these issues.

  566. But in another sense,

  567. friends,

  568. heartbreakingly

  569. with this worldview,

  570. the fact that we are

  571. still talking about

  572. a lot of these things

  573. in 2020

  574. I don't think

  575. it should surprise us.

  576. Because the issue,

  577. the core of the issue,

  578. right,

  579. it's not primarily

  580. an educational one.

  581. It's not primarily

  582. about money.

  583. It's not a legal one.

  584. It's not about power.

  585. The heart of the issue,

  586. and these are all

  587. great secondary things

  588. that we want to use

  589. to see these things

  590. stamped out of our society.

  591. But the core of the issue,

  592. the Bible says,

  593. is the human heart.

  594. That's the problem.

  595. Human beings

  596. capable of tremendous goods

  597. and yet capable

  598. of terrible evil.

  599. And we know

  600. these things are true

  601. in our own hearts,

  602. but we know

  603. these things are true

  604. as we look out

  605. on the world.

  606. You know,

  607. I still remember

  608. the day that my dad

  609. first brought home

  610. our first family PC,

  611. right?

  612. Great day.

  613. We were growing up,

  614. right?

  615. We had dial-up internet,

  616. remember those glorious days,

  617. only one person

  618. on the phone at a time?

  619. Great days.

  620. But the internet

  621. is a case in point

  622. about what I'm talking

  623. about here,

  624. about humanity,

  625. right?

  626. Amazing invention.

  627. How would we have coped

  628. over the last six months

  629. without the internet?

  630. Think about it.

  631. What would we have done?

  632. I don't know.

  633. Send carrier pigeons

  634. to one another?

  635. I don't know what we would have done,

  636. right?

  637. How would we have coped?

  638. Amazing invention

  639. that human beings

  640. are using

  641. for incredible goods.

  642. But is it not true

  643. to say that the internet

  644. is the very source

  645. of some of the worst things

  646. about our world today?

  647. It's true, isn't it?

  648. Pornography

  649. and cyberbullying,

  650. money laundering,

  651. people trafficking,

  652. on and on and on

  653. the list could go.

  654. Human beings, friends.

  655. You see what the Bible is saying?

  656. A glorious ruin.

  657. A glorious ruin.

  658. Which is where the story

  659. would have stayed

  660. if this God

  661. isn't who he is.

  662. This is where the story

  663. would have stayed

  664. if it wasn't for

  665. this God

  666. who is in the habit

  667. of loving his enemies,

  668. of pursuing people

  669. who want nothing

  670. to do with him.

  671. If it weren't for the gospel,

  672. the message of Christ crucified,

  673. that God has acted in Christ

  674. out of his great love

  675. for a world lost

  676. and reveling in sin

  677. and darkness,

  678. offering great hope

  679. for humanity.

  680. humanity.

  681. Right?

  682. And there's two sides

  683. of this transforming hope

  684. that we have

  685. in the gospel.

  686. If you remember back

  687. to our kind of

  688. three-fold disruption,

  689. remember God,

  690. outward,

  691. inward.

  692. Right?

  693. Think about those things.

  694. Here's what the gospel does.

  695. Friends,

  696. there cannot be an act

  697. that more rubber stamps

  698. the dignity of humanity

  699. than the incarnation.

  700. That God would come down

  701. in the person of Jesus.

  702. that Jesus Christ,

  703. God eternal,

  704. took on flesh.

  705. And he is the very embodiment

  706. of perfect humanity,

  707. which means to be transformed

  708. more into his images,

  709. to become more human,

  710. as it were.

  711. He is what it means

  712. to live life to the full.

  713. He is what it is

  714. to live a fully joyous life.

  715. He is the true

  716. and better Adam,

  717. whose life would end

  718. at the cross

  719. where he takes the place

  720. of sinful humanity.

  721. Friends,

  722. we're all those

  723. who would trust in him

  724. for the forgiveness

  725. of their sin.

  726. How does this

  727. king conquer?

  728. He conquers through humility.

  729. And we in turn,

  730. friends,

  731. as we turn to him,

  732. are clothed

  733. with his perfect righteousness.

  734. We know mercy,

  735. we know grace,

  736. we know love abounding.

  737. You know,

  738. I was chatting to my friend

  739. Paul Rees,

  740. who's down at Charlotte Chapel.

  741. He was telling me

  742. a story recently

  743. about a funeral he took

  744. over the last couple of months

  745. for an older man

  746. and his congregation

  747. and just family

  748. clearing out the house

  749. and they found his old Bible,

  750. right,

  751. and gave it to Paul

  752. and Paul opens it

  753. and there was a huge circle

  754. around the opening verses

  755. of Psalm 130.

  756. Huge circle in this guy's Bible

  757. around the phrase,

  758. if you, Lord,

  759. kept a record of sins,

  760. Lord,

  761. who could stand?

  762. But with you,

  763. there is forgiveness

  764. so that we can,

  765. with reverence,

  766. serve you.

  767. And Paul said,

  768. that man knew the joy

  769. of sins forgiven,

  770. of being right with God.

  771. Friends,

  772. Jesus heals

  773. our upward separation.

  774. Heals our upward separation.

  775. We are reconciled to God.

  776. We are justified.

  777. We are adopted into his family

  778. because of his great love for us.

  779. And now,

  780. God has sent his spirit

  781. into our hearts

  782. to know his fatherly love.

  783. Jesus has reconciled us that way

  784. and he's reconciled us internally,

  785. transforming us internally

  786. by his grace

  787. as God breathes into us

  788. into spiritually dead corpses

  789. and is transforming us

  790. more into the image of Jesus.

  791. Jesus.

  792. Friends,

  793. it's almost like God

  794. is declaring over us

  795. that

  796. I made you,

  797. I created you in my image

  798. and I've redeemed you

  799. from the power of sin

  800. and death

  801. and I am transforming you

  802. more into the likeness of Jesus

  803. so that you can come

  804. increasingly

  805. to bear that image

  806. once again

  807. to the watching world.

  808. Jesus has reconciled us

  809. to God,

  810. transforming us internally

  811. and it changes us corporately

  812. as the church

  813. and here's the logic of it

  814. and follow with me

  815. if you're still tracking here,

  816. right?

  817. If the very core

  818. of who our God is

  819. is that he is triune,

  820. okay?

  821. He is loving unity

  822. in diversity.

  823. If that is who our God is,

  824. as this God claims for himself

  825. and changes his people,

  826. friends,

  827. not only should we expect

  828. to see something of that

  829. being reflected

  830. in the church,

  831. but surely it makes sense

  832. that we best image him

  833. to the world

  834. when we live out

  835. loving unity

  836. in diversity.

  837. And we have a saviour,

  838. don't we,

  839. who is all about crossing divides,

  840. who crossed the Jew

  841. and Samaritan one

  842. to reach the woman

  843. at the well,

  844. who crossed the clean

  845. versus the unclean one

  846. when he touched the leper.

  847. We've got a God,

  848. a king,

  849. who is all about

  850. crossing divides,

  851. who is all about

  852. bringing reconciliation.

  853. Friends,

  854. all of that is to say

  855. that reconciliation

  856. is the very heart

  857. of the gospel

  858. and the church is called

  859. to reflect it

  860. to the world.

  861. And that's why

  862. when it comes to displaying

  863. that unity

  864. and diversity,

  865. friends,

  866. I think we need to

  867. take more seriously

  868. the call

  869. to actively pursue it

  870. for the glory of God.

  871. Right?

  872. Particularly when it maybe

  873. comes to social

  874. and racial unity,

  875. friends,

  876. we need to get better

  877. at listening.

  878. And we need to get better

  879. at learning

  880. and entering into

  881. other people's stories

  882. and adapting.

  883. Right?

  884. Not the gospel,

  885. but entering into

  886. other people's lives

  887. and thinking,

  888. how can we help

  889. introduce these people

  890. to Jesus

  891. and love them

  892. and hearing from

  893. other people's experiences.

  894. And I think it might

  895. mean us needing

  896. to get a bit better

  897. at being uncomfortable.

  898. As we seek to display

  899. and take seriously

  900. what God has done

  901. in Jesus,

  902. as we reflect this God

  903. to the watching world,

  904. loving unity

  905. in diversity.

  906. And I love that picture

  907. that we get

  908. at the end of Revelation.

  909. Right?

  910. Chapters 4 and 5.

  911. You can check this out

  912. in your own time.

  913. Who is gathered

  914. around the throne

  915. worshiping God?

  916. Friends,

  917. it is a people

  918. from every tribe,

  919. tongue,

  920. and nation.

  921. This people

  922. who God

  923. has gathered together

  924. and made one

  925. through his spirit.

  926. This is God's

  927. very good design.

  928. His very good design.

  929. And this is what

  930. he is doing

  931. in the gospel.

  932. We saw that

  933. in Ephesians 1,

  934. didn't we?

  935. Chapter 10.

  936. About God's plan.

  937. God's plan.

  938. And how he is

  939. displaying his glory

  940. to the world.

  941. And our girls,

  942. we have got this little book

  943. called God's

  944. very good design.

  945. Right?

  946. Trying to explain

  947. this stuff

  948. to children.

  949. And it ends

  950. with these words,

  951. God made it,

  952. people ruined it,

  953. Jesus rescued it,

  954. and he will finish it.

  955. It is beautiful,

  956. isn't it?

  957. Friends,

  958. a glorious ruin.

  959. We started in Rome.

  960. Let's just finish

  961. in Geneva.

  962. Okay?

  963. Not too far from Rome,

  964. I guess.

  965. It's a city that

  966. 450 years ago

  967. was turned on its head

  968. by the knowledge

  969. of Jesus.

  970. Okay?

  971. At the beginning

  972. of the 16th century,

  973. the city's motto

  974. translated into English,

  975. after darkness,

  976. I hope for light.

  977. Right?

  978. It was a city's motto.

  979. Right?

  980. If ever there was

  981. a sentiment

  982. that captured the mood

  983. of our world right now,

  984. I think there it is.

  985. Right?

  986. After darkness,

  987. I hope for light.

  988. What's the headline,

  989. friends,

  990. that you and I

  991. hope to wake up to

  992. every single morning

  993. when we've done so

  994. for the last

  995. six to eight months?

  996. Yeah?

  997. Vaccine found.

  998. That's what we're

  999. hoping for,

  1000. isn't it?

  1001. Vaccine found.

  1002. Friends,

  1003. in the gospel

1004. we have a better hope

  1005. that's available

  1006. to us now.

1007. And do you know what?

  1008. The people of Geneva

  1009. encountered it.

  1010. After the Reformation

  1011. hit Geneva,

  1012. the city changed

  1013. its motto from

  1014. after darkness,

  1015. I hope for light.

  1016. Do you know what

  1017. they changed it to?

  1018. After darkness,

  1019. light.

  1020. Why?

  1021. Well,

  1022. the Reformation

  1023. had at its heart

  1024. all,

  1025. it was all about

  1026. heralding the glory

  1027. of Jesus,

1028. how you can be made

  1029. right with your creator.

  1030. And as the people

  1031. of that city

  1032. heard and responded

  1033. to it,

  1034. friends,

  1035. they truly believed

  1036. that they'd found

  1037. the hope

  1038. that they'd been

  1039. looking for as people.

  1040. As we truly believe

  1041. this,

  1042. that Jesus Christ

  1043. is the great hope

  1044. for humanity.

  1045. Jesus Christ

  1046. is the great hope

  1047. for the church,

  1048. the beautiful community

  1049. that we are called

  1050. to be,

  1051. that displays

  1052. the power of God

  1053. as we come together

  1054. in unity and diversity,

  1055. as we reflect him

  1056. to the world.

  1057. Jesus is the great

  1058. life for the people

  1059. in our city.

1060. And I guess the question

  1061. to end on,

  1062. friends,

  1063. is,

  1064. are you convinced

1065. of it in your own heart?

  1066. You know,

1067. what I want to do

  1068. just as we respond

  1069. to this tonight,

  1070. I realize there's been

1071. a lot of big things

  1072. in there,

  1073. and I definitely felt

  1074. the pressure

  1075. of not being able

1076. to do any of that

  1077. justice in,

  1078. what,

  1079. 25,

  1080. 30 minutes?

  1081. I don't know

  1082. what it's been.

  1083. But Jesus Christ

  1084. is the hope

  1085. for our nation,

  1086. and he's the great

  1087. restorer of life

  1088. and joy,

1089. and he is the giver

  1090. of life.

  1091. And so,

  1092. friends,

1093. I just want to maybe

1094. just pause for a moment

  1095. and allow us

  1096. just in our own,

  1097. our own quiet,

  1098. perhaps just to respond

  1099. to this.

  1100. Maybe you want to,

  1101. you're thinking of

  1102. particular issues

  1103. or particular people

  1104. in your minds

  1105. or maybe something

  1106. that's going on

  1107. in your own life

  1108. as we thought

  1109. about what the Bible

  1110. says about humanity.

1111. Maybe just in the quiet,

  1112. friends,

1113. maybe you want to offer

1114. your own prayers to God,

1115. and then we'll come back

1116. and we're going to pray

1117. for some of the stuff

  1118. that we've talked about

  1119. tonight,

  1120. particularly as it affects

1121. the people in our city

  1122. of Edinburgh.

1123. So why don't we just

1124. have a moment of quiet

1125. and then I'll bring us

  1126. back and we'll pray.

  1127. Amen.

  1128. Amen.

  1129. Amen.

  1130. Amen.

  1131. Amen.

  1132. Amen.

  1133. Amen.

  1134. Amen.

  1135. Amen.

  1136. Amen.

  1137. Amen.

  1138. Amen.

  1139. Amen.

  1140. Amen.

  1141. Amen.

  1142. Amen.

  1143. Amen.

  1144. Amen.

  1145. Amen.

  1146. Amen.

  1147. Amen.

  1148. Matthew chapter 9,

    Matthew 9:35–38

  1149. verses 35 to 38.

  1150. Jesus went through

1151. all the towns and villages,

  1152. teaching in their synagogues,

  1153. proclaiming the good news

  1154. of the kingdom

  1155. and healing every disease

  1156. and illness.

1157. When he saw the crowds,

1158. he had compassion on them

  1159. because they were harassed

  1160. and helpless like sheep

  1161. without a shepherd.

1162. Then he said to his disciples,

  1163. the harvest is plentiful,

1164. but the workers are few.

1165. Ask the Lord of the harvest,

  1166. therefore,

  1167. to send out workers

  1168. into his harvest field.

1169. May we just spend a few moments

1170. in prayer as we respond to this.

  1171. Heavenly Father,

  1172. we would pray tonight

  1173. as your people here

  1174. for Christ's heart

1175. for the people of our city.

1176. As we read there in Matthew 9

  1177. of Jesus having compassion

1178. as he looked on the people

1179. who made up the crowds.

  1180. Father,

  1181. that they were lost

1182. and that they were desperately

1183. in need of our shepherd.

  1184. And thank you

1185. that he didn't just look and leave,

  1186. but he looked

1187. and went to the cross

1188. so that the universal call

  1189. of the gospel

1190. could go out to people

  1191. to come to him

1192. and to have life in his name

1193. as they know forgiveness of sins.

1194. And we just praise you, Lord,

  1195. for who you are.

1196. Thank you just for the short time tonight

1197. gazing upon who you are,

1198. the God who is loving unity

  1199. and diversity.

  1200. And so, Father,

1201. we would just maybe want to bring

1202. to you our own prayers this evening.

  1203. Father,

  1204. for the times

  1205. perhaps in our lives

1206. where we have got this wrong,

  1207. Lord,

1208. we pray that you would help us, Lord,

1209. to grasp what you say

1210. is true of human beings.

  1211. Father,

1212. we think of our own city this evening

1213. and we would pray for Edinburgh.

1214. And we think of the many different people

1215. that we know in our circles,

  1216. the many different people

1217. who live in this city.

  1218. Father,

1219. we'd want to pray maybe tonight

1220. for the most vulnerable in our city

  1221. as we think about

1222. what you have said is true

1223. about every single human being

1224. as being made in the image of you.

  1225. Lord,

  1226. we would pray tonight

1227. for those who are on our streets

  1228. and who are homeless.

  1229. Father,

1230. we ask that they would get the support

1231. and the shelter that they need.

  1232. Father,

1233. we pray for different organisations

  1234. working so hard there

1235. that you would help them,

  1236. Father,

  1237. to provide social care

1238. and to provide physical help.

  1239. Lord,

1240. that we might see people

  1241. not having to resort

1242. to homelessness in our city.

  1243. Father,

  1244. we pray for those

  1245. who are struggling

  1246. with unemployment just now.

  1247. Lord,

  1248. we know the times

  1249. in which we live,

  1250. the recession

1251. in which we are currently in.

  1252. And so,

  1253. Father,

  1254. we pray for those

  1255. who are finding themselves

  1256. out of work

1257. that you would be near to them.

  1258. Father,

  1259. they would know you

  1260. as the great provider.

  1261. Lord,

1262. we would think of those

  1263. in our city

  1264. who are struggling

  1265. with loneliness

  1266. and depression.

  1267. Father,

  1268. who are struggling

  1269. with this season

1270. as a thought of perhaps

  1271. another lockdown

1272. looms large in the mind.

  1273. Father,

1274. we pray that you would be near

  1275. to these individuals,

  1276. that you surround them

  1277. with people

1278. who can care for them well.

  1279. Maybe particularly

  1280. those,

  1281. Father,

  1282. tonight who are struggling

  1283. with the very thought

1284. of keeping on going in life.

  1285. Father,

1286. that you would put people

  1287. around them

  1288. who can speak

1289. the truth of your word

  1290. into their lives,

1291. that they are of value,

  1292. that they are known,

  1293. that they are loved.

  1294. Father,

1295. we would think of the many

  1296. children in our city,

  1297. Lord,

  1298. who find themselves

  1299. in poverty,

  1300. those who are struggling,

  1301. Lord,

  1302. to go to school.

  1303. Father,

  1304. we pray for them

  1305. and particularly,

  1306. Lord,

  1307. we maybe pray

1308. for half term this week

1309. that you would give them

  1310. rest

1311. and you would give them

  1312. a break.

  1313. And Father,

  1314. that you would help

  1315. provide for families,

  1316. so that children

  1317. can be brought up

  1318. well in this city.

  1319. Father,

  1320. we think of those

  1321. who find themselves

1322. in care homes as well.

  1323. Lord,

  1324. realizing the heartbreaking

  1325. statistics

  1326. that we've maybe heard

  1327. over the last

  1328. number of months

  1329. as we thought about

  1330. those in care homes,

  1331. Lord,

1332. we pray that you would

1333. just be near to them.

  1334. Father,

  1335. for those who are

  1336. struggling with pain

  1337. and with hurts,

  1338. Father,

  1339. those who are grieving

  1340. the loss

  1341. of both family

  1342. and friends.

  1343. Lord,

  1344. that you would be

  1345. known as the great

  1346. comforter

  1347. in those situations.

  1348. And so,

  1349. Father,

  1350. we would just pray

  1351. tonight that you

  1352. would help us

  1353. to love people

  1354. well.

  1355. And so,

  1356. Father,

  1357. we just praise you

  1358. for your words,

  1359. your precious words.

  1360. Father,

  1361. where would we be

  1362. without your words?

  1363. And so,

  1364. Lord,

  1365. we just commit

  1366. ourselves to you

  1367. tonight.

  1368. and we just

  1369. praise you

  1370. that you hear us,

  1371. that our words

  1372. don't just bounce

  1373. off the ceiling,

  1374. that they don't

  1375. just echo

  1376. around the room,

  1377. but Father,

  1378. you hear us

  1379. because we pray

  1380. in Jesus'

  1381. precious name.

  1382. Amen.
