  1. Well, good evening. Great to be here. Thanks for your invite. I was really excited that I was able to get out of Glasgow for work reasons, of course, as a minister tonight.

  2. But just very exciting to actually be able to get in the car and use it after so long of being very, very local at home.

  3. It's great to be back at Brunsfield to see some familiar faces, and I pray that God will bless us tonight.

  4. Let me bring you some greetings just from the constituency of FIEC churches that I work for and represent across Scotland and beyond.

  5. We've been trying to support churches over this strange time, over the last eight months, with some weekly webinars for church leaders across the UK,

  6. trying to update them on the kind of various developments, but also just some of the challenges of leadership at a time like this.

  7. And we've had a few separate Scottish webinars to update churches on particular guidance.

  8. And I've been trying to send out some summary papers to pastors and others, which hopefully Graeme Shanks and others might have received here as well.

  9. But God's work is going on, despite all the restrictions and limitations.

  10. We're delighted that we welcomed into FIC family the new church plant out at South Queensferry, which I know you'll be very familiar with, Christ Church there.

  11. The work in Aviemore is moving forward.

  12. Of course, like everything else, it's been sort of strange and changed in many ways.

  13. But it was great that Kenny Rogan and Leslie Rogan, the church planting family there, were able to buy a house in the town this summer.

  14. That was a great prayer point for us.

  15. And as Kenny said to me, he said, it's exactly where you would buy a house if you're looking at a map of Aviemore and wanted to plant a church.

  16. So that's been a huge provision of God.

  17. And we pray that will help them to make contacts and to get settled in the community.

  18. And we've also been able this year to support revitalisation work in Mary Hill in Glasgow and a cross-cultural worker at Harper Church,

  19. along with the just day-to-day and week-to-week kind of pastoral support and connecting of churches and ministries.

  20. I just wanted to let you know that despite all the limitations, God is still at work, and I'm sure he is as well, in lots of ways.

  21. Well, please do have your Bible open at that passage in 2 Corinthians chapter 8.

    2 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  22. We'll probably flick over to chapter 9 as well, because both chapter 8 and 9 deal with the subject of giving.

  23. You've been doing a topical series, I believe, and tonight's subject is we need to talk about giving.

  24. So we're dealing with a taboo subject.

  25. So maybe just as well as no children here tonight.

  26. Indeed, it's a subject that the Times newspaper once called the last taboo in an article which was subtitled,

  27. Why it's okay to talk about sex and death, but never salaries.

  28. Or in other words, why talking about personal wealth is one of the last no-go areas in polite society.

  29. It's a subject, of course, that we can feel uncomfortable about when we come to discussing it.

  30. And to preach on the subject of giving, believe you me, feels like entering a bit of a potential minefield.

  31. Listeners perhaps feel an edge waiting for the guilt trip or the high-pressure appeal.

  32. Don't worry, there's not going to be one of those tonight.

  33. And speakers feel anxious about looking self-interested and not least their own shortcomings.

  34. And there are some good reasons why we might have that kind of discomfort as we come to a subject like this.

  35. One of the great evils of the Western Church in recent decades has been the exporting of the prosperity gospel to Africa

  36. and other parts of the developing world.

  37. It's ministers on the God channels promising riches for those who just have enough faith.

  38. It's a Christianity, of course, that ultimately produces guilt and, worst of all, disillusionment with Jesus.

  39. And ministries, incidentally, that don't even believe their own theology.

  40. They tell us that whatever you give, you will get back 10, 20, 30, 100-fold.

  41. Which begs the question, why don't they just do that with their own money in the first place?

  42. Get back that great increase and save us all the appeals.

  43. As John Stott said, we have to have the courage to reject the health and wealth gospel.

  44. Absolutely.

  45. It's a false gospel.

  46. So we're rightly cautious then to avoid any sense of a preoccupation with money.

  47. But the other danger, of course, if we go to the other extreme,

  48. is that we make money a kind of no-go area in church.

  49. But money is a big issue in the world.

  50. It's a big issue in our lives, let's face it.

  51. It is a key component in everyday living.

  52. So we would expect the Bible to have something to say about it.

  53. And it does.

  54. Lots, in fact.

  55. Jesus talked five times as much, or rather the New Testament has five times as much teaching on money

  56. as it does in the subject of prayer.

  57. Jesus talked far more about money in his ministry than he did about sex.

  58. So a church without regular teaching on money would be as negligent as a church who never taught about prayer.

  59. So as we go into this subject, and we're going to just pick a few of the kind of main points out of these passages in 2 Corinthians tonight,

  60. let's just clear the undergrowth a little bit and establish a few basic truths from the Bible.

  61. And the first one is that the material world was created by God and is a gift to be enjoyed.

  62. That means that having things and resources and being able to acquire things is legitimate.

  63. Indeed, it is a blessing.

  64. 1 Timothy chapter 4 and verse 4.

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  65. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.

  66. God, of course, blessed Israel with material things, good lands, crops, prosperity.

  67. Heaven will be a real place.

  68. There will be great plenty there to enjoy.

  69. So there is nothing wrong with the appropriate possession and use and enjoyment of material things.

  70. That's the first point.

  71. The second point is that being rich is not wrong, neither is poor to be glorified.

  72. There are many godly men and women in the Bible who were wealthy.

  73. However, Abraham, Job, Philemon, contrastingly, the ungodly poor are never set up as role models.

  74. As Andrew Boner Law very well put it,

  75. far better a rich man seeking God than a poor man seeking riches.

  76. But of course, wealth does, in a fallen world, present some real dangers to us.

  77. It's one of the primary reasons that people turn away from God.

  78. Wealth can easily create a self-reliance, a pride, a love of comfort that displaces God in people's lives.

  79. And so we need to be wary of it and careful and cautious in our use of it and where our hearts go in relation to it.

  80. But being rich in itself is not wrong, neither is poverty some great virtue in and of itself.

  81. And then the third and final point as we go into this subject is that the New Testament sees financial giving as a barometer of spiritual health.

  82. We saw something of that in the passage that was read to us by Ailey on the screen.

  83. Paul writes,

  84. I'm not commanding you in this area of giving, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others.

  85. Paul is making a link there between their attitude to giving, their earnestness in giving,

  86. and to the spiritual temperature, we might say, of their hearts.

  87. Luke chapter 12 and verse 34 says,

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  88. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  89. That is, where your money goes tells you something about where your heart is.

  90. That's the word of Jesus himself.

  91. But not the order of that verse, which we'd had it on the screen,

  92. but the order of the verse says, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  93. And in closer reading, we might think, is that not a little bit back to front?

  94. Shouldn't the order be, where your heart is, there your treasure will be also.

  95. After all, surely our money will follow our hearts and not vice versa,

  96. as seems to be what Jesus says in Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  97. But of course, Jesus never fumbles his words.

  98. And I think there is something very practical in this about the order that Jesus puts it in.

  99. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  100. That is, where we put our money will influence and shape our concerns.

  101. That is, our hearts.

  102. If I choose to give money to a mission in India, then guess what?

  103. I'm likely to find I'm a lot more interested and concerned about mission in India

  104. than I might otherwise have been.

  105. If I give a gift to the youth group, you know what?

  106. The youth group is probably likely to nudge its way up my prayer list

  107. because I've suddenly got a bit of an investment in it.

  108. You see, one of the ways that you can start to shape your heart around heavenly things

  109. is by making the very cold and practical decision to put some of your cash into them.

  110. Where your treasure is, your heart will be also.

  111. Now, God isn't some heavenly sheriff of Nottingham.

  112. He is not obsessed with your wallets or just taking your cash for its own sake.

  113. God, of course, owns the cattle on a thousand hills.

  114. And as somebody has said, he owns the hills as well.

  115. He is the self-sufficient one.

  116. Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  117. He has no need of anything.

  118. He's the one who has made and gives everything to everyone.

  119. In 1 Corinthians, Paul asked the question,

  120. what do you have that you did not receive?

  121. It's a rhetorical question, of course, isn't it?

  122. Because the answer is nothing.

  123. We enter the world naked and one day we will leave everything behind.

  124. So God isn't interested obsessively in some kind of unhealthy way about your bank balance,

  125. but he is interested in your heart.

  126. He's interested in the kind of people that you and I are.

  127. You see, the world around us sees the accumulation of money and possessions

  128. as the yardstick of measuring somebody's worth and significance and value and importance.

  129. We know that, don't we?

  130. We see that all the time.

  131. If you've got cash, you will get attention and status and prestige.

  132. If you're poor, nobody's that interested in what you think or who you are.

  133. But Jesus calls in his people to have a very different set of values.

  134. Now notice at the centre of the passage that we read in 2 Corinthians chapter 8,

    2 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  135. right at the heart of it,

  136. where Paul is encouraging and indeed expecting that Christians will give of themselves financially,

  137. he traces it all back to the gospel itself.

  138. chapter 8 and verse 9.

  139. We know this verse so well, don't we?

  140. It's a great verse to memorise.

  141. Paul says,

  142. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  143. that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor,

  144. so that you, through his poverty, might become rich.

  145. Jesus gave up his riches unselfishly, generously, out of love for us.

  146. Our God is the great giver,

  147. giving up even his own son, that indescribable gift,

  148. as he has described at the end of chapter 9, for our welfare.

  149. Our saviour and Lord Jesus Christ gave up even his own life for your sake and mine.

  150. Think of it this way.

  151. Your life and my life, if we're Christians tonight,

  152. were rescued and turned around because someone who was rich

  153. gave up that wealth in order to intervene in our lives.

  154. Isn't that amazing?

  155. There we were in spiritual rags,

  156. and the richest person in the universe gave away his money

  157. that we might be showered with blessings

  158. and raised up to heavenly places.

  159. Paul says it is this gospel truth

  160. that should shape and direct us in how we use our wealth.

  161. How amazing to be able to give away the resources,

  162. the finance that we have,

  163. so that other people might have their lives transformed.

  164. That is the privilege and the purpose,

  165. the prize of the money that you and I give to gospel work.

  166. People hear the gospel.

  167. They see the love of Christ in action,

  168. and through that investment,

  169. by the grace of God,

  170. they too can move from spiritual ruin

  171. to spiritual riches.

  172. You see, when you give,

  173. you are living out the gospel.

  174. So if we think of Christian giving

  175. as just another unwelcome tax,

  176. if giving becomes a reluctant duty,

  177. as Paul describes it in chapter 9,

  178. verse 7,

  179. something which is done kind of grudgingly

  180. under some kind of compulsion,

  181. if it's resented,

  182. then we have totally lost sight of the gospel.

  183. That's why Christian giving

  184. isn't based on legalistic commands.

  185. That's why Paul says there in verse 8,

  186. I'm not commanding you.

  187. This isn't something that you're going to be

  188. dragged kicking and screaming to do.

  189. But if you get the gospel,

  190. if you get verse 9,

  191. if you understand how God has used his riches

  192. to transform your life,

  193. then all of a sudden,

  194. giving becomes something which is a privilege

  195. and a joy and a blessing

  196. to be invited to do.

  197. Now, in 2 Corinthians,

  198. Paul writes to encourage

  199. and advise Christians

  200. about their financial giving.

  201. And in the instance of chapter 8

  202. and chapter 9,

  203. it was organizing a gift

  204. to help struggling Christians elsewhere,

  205. poor churches back in Judea.

  206. But we also know from Corinthians

  207. that Paul expected

  208. that Christians would give financially

  209. for other causes too,

  210. such as the support of gospel workers.

  211. that it was right

  212. that appropriately gifted

  213. and godly people

  214. could be set aside

  215. for gospel work

  216. and paid for

  217. by those they served

  218. for the work that they did.

  219. That is a good biblical principle.

  220. Well, very practically,

  221. just in the time that we have,

  222. let me just highlight

  223. three practical points

  224. about giving

  225. from these verses.

  226. So very briefly then.

  227. Firstly,

  228. plan your giving.

  229. Plan your giving.

  230. Be organized.

  231. Chapter 9, verse 4,

  232. Paul says to them,

  233. he says,

  234. For if any Macedonians

  235. come with me

  236. and find you unprepared

  237. in this matter

  238. of organizing a gift,

  239. we, not to say anything about you,

  240. would be ashamed

  241. of having been so confident.

  242. So I thought it necessary

  243. to urge the brothers

  244. to visit you in advance

  245. and finish the arrangements

  246. for the generous gift

  247. you have promised.

  248. You see, Paul is saying,

  249. you know,

  250. get organized in this area.

  251. You know,

  252. do a bit of preparation.

  253. You know,

  254. plan ahead here

  255. so it's not just

  256. a complete disaster

  257. or kind of muddle

  258. when the time comes

  259. to collect this money.

  260. Because the fact is,

  261. as you and I well know,

  262. that if our giving isn't planned,

  263. it probably won't amount

  264. to that much.

  265. You know,

  266. a kind of piecemeal approach

  267. of what have I got on me

  268. on a Sunday morning?

  269. Well,

  270. it's not going to deliver much,

  271. is it really?

  272. Never good.

  273. Or,

  274. just, well,

  275. what's left over

  276. at the end of the month?

  277. Well,

  278. that's probably not going

  279. to be very much,

  280. is it?

  281. That kind of approach

  282. to giving,

  283. kind of haphazard,

  284. last minute,

  285. you know,

  286. end of the list,

  287. is not,

  288. verse 7,

  289. to excel

  290. in this grace

  291. of giving,

  292. is it?

  293. That's why,

  294. let me say,

  295. practically,

  296. a standing order

  297. is really good.

  298. It prioritizes

  299. your giving.

  300. Verse 5,

  301. it kind of makes

  302. that statement

  303. that giving

  304. for gospel work

  305. is your first priority

  306. or one of your first priorities.

  307. It's first

  308. to the Lord

  309. there in verse 5.

  310. To get that,

  311. it doesn't have to be

  312. everything you give,

  313. but it might just be

  314. that base amount

  315. that you know

  316. is regularly established

  317. and will go out

  318. come what may.

  319. Likewise,

  320. let me just say,

  321. signing the gift aid form.

  322. Please,

  323. if you're a taxpayer,

  324. do that

  325. for your Christian giving.

  326. It's not getting

  327. a gift from the government,

  328. it's just getting

  329. some of your own money

  330. back

  331. that can then be used

  332. for gospel work.

  333. So plan your giving,

  334. be organized.

  335. Maybe that's the one

  336. take-home thing

  337. that somebody needs

  338. to take away tonight

  339. or somebody

  340. who's watching this

  341. online

  342. is simply

  343. to get onto

  344. their laptop

  345. later on

  346. or tomorrow

  347. and to set up

  348. a standing order.

  349. That would be

  350. a great outcome

  351. from this

  352. in this area.

  353. As simple as that.

  354. But secondly,

  355. let me say,

  356. stretch yourself

  357. in giving.

  358. You see that

  359. in verse 3.

  360. He writes of these

  361. Christians,

  362. the Macedonian Christians,

  363. for I testify

  364. that they gave

  365. as much as they were able

  366. and even beyond

  367. their ability.

  368. Our culture

  369. is often one of

  370. great self-indulgence,

  371. isn't it?

  372. I'm worth it.

  373. Me time.

  374. It's 5 o'clock

  375. somewhere.

  376. I see that

  377. in Facebook sometimes.

  378. You know,

  379. somebody puts a Facebook

  380. post on,

  381. you have stacked

  382. the dishwasher,

  383. time to open

  384. the wine

  385. and to chill out.

  386. Wow,

  387. that's quite

  388. an undertaking,

  389. isn't it?

  390. we're very quick

  391. to justify

  392. ourselves

  393. with all sorts

  394. of luxuries

  395. and treats.

  396. And there's nothing

  397. wrong with some

  398. luxuries and treats

  399. in life,

  400. but we have to keep

  401. that in perspective,

  402. don't we?

  403. Because you see,

  404. there's a real sense

  405. in the Bible

  406. that this life,

  407. this side of heaven

  408. is wartime

  409. for the Christian,

  410. for the spiritual

  411. battle that we're

  412. engaged in.

  413. There is so much need,

  414. so much gospel work

  415. needing resourced.

  416. We live in a world

  417. heading for judgment,

  418. the clock is ticking,

  419. and everywhere

  420. Christian work

  421. is cash-strapped.

  422. The writer Craig Blomberg

  423. in his book on giving

  424. neither poverty

  425. nor riches

  426. quotes a survey

  427. that was done

  428. of Christians

  429. in the United States

  430. and Christians

  431. were asked

  432. if they knew

  433. that their income

  434. next year

  435. would be 10% less

  436. than it was this year,

  437. where would they cut back

  438. in terms of outgoings

  439. and their finances?

  440. And the number one answer,

  441. and I appreciate this

  442. is the United States,

  443. but the number one answer

  444. was they would

  445. eat out less.

  446. Well, why not

  447. miss one of those meals now?

  448. Not all of them,

  449. but maybe one or two now,

  450. and give the money

  451. to a Christian cause,

  452. to Christian ministry.

  453. I think there's lots

  454. of examples of my own life,

  455. and I'm not standing here

  456. as some great guru

  457. in the subject of giving.

  458. There are lots of examples

  459. in my own life

  460. where I could be

  461. a little bit more modest

  462. and use the savings

  463. to invest in gospel work

  464. that will last for eternity.

  465. So stretch yourself.

  466. Thirdly,

  467. give spontaneously.

  468. It's great to have

  469. a standing order.

  470. I want to just

  471. underline that point.

  472. It's very sensible.

  473. It's very helpful.

  474. The church

  475. or Christian ministry

  476. can then plan

  477. on the basis

  478. of a stable income.

  479. But there are times,

  480. of course,

  481. when we can make

  482. that extra special gift,

  483. isn't there?

  484. Maybe we have a windfall

  485. or some savings

  486. come to fruition.

  487. And before we just

  488. splurge it

  489. on some big extra treat,

  490. just think about

  491. who could be helped

  492. by that gift

  493. or perhaps a share

  494. of that gift.

  495. The missionary

  496. who needs a new car.

  497. The ministry

  498. that needs

  499. a new data projector.

  500. The repair

  501. in the church

  502. that never has

  503. been able

  504. to get done.

  505. And let me say

  506. that in those

  507. kind of spontaneous

  508. extra gifts,

  509. there is something

  510. very liberating,

  511. something particularly

  512. joyful about them.

  513. Those are the gifts,

  514. I think,

  515. when we really learn

  516. the truth

  517. of that old saying,

  518. giving will never

  519. impoverish you

  520. nor withholding

  521. enrich you.

  522. Or,

  523. as Paul puts it

  524. in verse 15,

  525. the one who gathered

  526. much did not

  527. have too much

  528. and the one

  529. who gathered

  530. little

  531. did not

  532. have too

  533. little.

  534. Now,

  535. giving generously

  536. and sacrificially,

  537. this is an important

  538. qualification to the above,

  539. is not about,

  540. however,

  541. giving irresponsibly

  542. or recklessly.

  543. We have to live

  544. within our means.

  545. You see that

  546. in verse 12

  547. of chapter 8.

  548. He talks about

  549. there,

  550. the end of verse 11.

  551. Now,

  552. finish the work

  553. so that your eagerness,

  554. so that your eager

  555. willingness to do it

  556. may be matched

  557. by your completion

  558. of it

  559. according to

  560. your means.

  561. For if the willingness

  562. is there,

  563. the gift is acceptable

  564. according to what

  565. one has,

  566. not according to

  567. what one

  568. does not have.

  569. That means

  570. that we should

  571. never get into debt

  572. in order to give.

  573. And we should

  574. never neglect

  575. our primary commitments

  576. in order to give.

  577. Our children

  578. should never

  579. go hungry,

  580. put it that way,

  581. because we're giving

  582. to some other

  583. Christian mission.

  584. But all of this

  585. in proportion

  586. to our wealth

  587. and our income

  588. can give something,

  589. even if it's just

  590. the widow's mite.

  591. In the Old Testament,

  592. the Israelites

  593. were commanded

  594. to give 10%

  595. of their income

  596. to God.

  597. That was to the

  598. temple

  599. and the priests

  600. and all the things

  601. that were needed

  602. to resource

  603. God's worship

  604. and work

  605. in the world.

  606. Now there is no

  607. such legalistic

  608. commandment

  609. as we've already

  610. noted for Christians.

  611. But many Christians

  612. have nonetheless

  613. found it quite a good

  614. guide for giving.

  615. Indeed, if anything,

  616. we are so much

  617. more blessed

  618. as Christians,

  619. so much more aware

  620. of God's goodness

  621. that it would be

  622. strange in one sense

  623. to want to be

  624. less generous

  625. than an Old Testament

  626. Israelite

  627. was asked to be.

  628. That, of course,

  629. is very much

  630. for your conscience

  631. and your heart.

  632. Of course,

  633. not everything

  634. that you might

  635. give financially

  636. to the Lord's work

  637. might just go

  638. to one particular

  639. ministry

  640. or one particular

  641. place.

  642. You might give

  643. directly to support

  644. a particular

  645. Christian organisation

  646. that you have

  647. a heart for

  648. or an interest in

  649. or a particular

  650. missionary

  651. that you have

  652. a relationship to.

  653. That's good

  654. and fine.

  655. But let me

  656. encourage you

  657. just as we

  658. come to the end

  659. to make the

  660. local church

  661. a priority

  662. for your giving.

  663. Make that

  664. the heart

  665. of your giving

  666. for the simple

  667. reason

  668. that the local

  669. church will

  670. only be supported

  671. by its members.

  672. The world

  673. will help

  674. fund many

  675. good charitable

  676. causes

  677. but it won't

  678. fund the local

  679. church.

  680. It won't fund

  681. the gospel.

  682. Only Christians

  683. will do that.

  684. We can't expect

  685. local churches

  686. elsewhere to fund

  687. what we could

  688. pay for

  689. here.

  690. Greenview,

  691. my home church,

  692. is my primary

  693. responsibility

  694. when it comes

  695. to my giving

  696. along with

  697. the other

  698. members there.

  699. Let me finish

  700. by quoting

  701. a great

  702. Christian author

  703. of the last

  704. century,

  705. A.W. Tozer.

  706. And we'll

  707. close with this

  708. and just the

  709. final verse

  710. from verse

  711. 7 of the

  712. passage.

  713. Tozer says

  714. this,

  715. As base

  716. a thing

  717. as money

  718. often is,

  719. yet it can

  720. be transmuted

  721. into everlasting

  722. treasure.

  723. It can be

  724. converted into

  725. food for the

  726. hungry and

  727. clothing for the

  728. poor.

  729. It can keep a

  730. missionary actively

  731. winning lost men

  732. to the light of

  733. the gospel and

  734. thus transmute

  735. itself into

  736. heavenly values.

  737. Any temporal

  738. possession can be

  739. turned into

  740. everlasting wealth.

  741. Whatever is

  742. given to

  743. Christ is

  744. immediately

  745. touched with

  746. immortality.

  747. faith in

  748. faith, in

  749. speech, in

  750. knowledge, in

  751. all earnestness

  752. and in our

  753. love for you.

  754. See that you

  755. excel in this

  756. act of grace

  757. also.

  758. And may God

  759. bless these

  760. thoughts from

  761. his words.

  762. to

  763. wie

  764. you

  765. can

  766. see that

  767. here's a
