  1. Well, good evening, everyone. The last time I preached in this church, I preached to one person, so this is a huge advance.

  2. So Gary gets full credit for listening in person to that sermon over the summer, but it's a great privilege to be with you tonight.

  3. We heard the song, How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds, and it reminds me of a story told of John Newton.

  4. John Newton exercised a long ministry in the city of London, and John Newton preached until his early 80s.

  5. And at that particular point, his sight had failed, his memory had gone, and when he preached, he would have an assistant in the pulpit with him to point at the manuscript as to where he should continue to read.

  6. And at one point, Newton said the phrase, Jesus Christ is precious.

  7. He paused.

  8. Newton then said again, Jesus Christ is precious.

  9. His servant to his left said, Mr. Newton, you've said that again.

  10. He said, I know I said it again, and I'll say it a third time.

  11. Jesus Christ is precious.

  12. Now let us sing how sweet the name of Jesus sounds, a hymn that he himself had written many years earlier.

  13. And as we commence our time together, I'd like us to remind ourselves of how precious Jesus is to us.

  14. Because if we understand how precious he is, if we value him, if we appreciate him, if we have recognized who he is and what he has done,

  15. when we come to the various commands of Scripture, they will be joyful commands, not burdens.

  16. They will be a pleasure and not a trial.

  17. Because this evening, Graham has asked me if I would speak to you on the text at the very end of Matthew's Gospel,

  18. Matthew 28 and verses, well, I'll read verses 16 to 20.

  19. But before I read that passage, let me just remind you of a statement that I heard many years ago.

  20. When I was going to church, not yet a Christian, I would go to Buclue Free Church in the morning,

  21. which is just across the meadows from here, and I would go to Holy Root Abbey at night,

  22. which was along London Road.

  23. And the minister there was James Phillip.

  24. He exercised a very long ministry in Edinburgh.

  25. And one thing that Mr. Phillip often said, he said,

  26. the imperatives of the faith are based on the indicatives of grace.

  27. So imperatives are commands.

  28. But indicatives are statements.

  29. And if we understand the statements of faith, of grace,

  30. what we believe, that Jesus Christ died, that he was buried, that he rose on the third day,

  31. and that he is therefore to be proclaimed to all the nations.

  32. So the foundations are not how well we keep the commands of God,

  33. but the foundations are what God has done for us.

  34. And if we recognize what God has done for us, we will then naturally want to tell others,

  35. share this good news.

  36. So this command at the very end of the gospel comes in the light of the death of Jesus,

  37. the burial of Jesus, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  38. So that is our foundation, what Jesus has done, who he is, and what we now enjoy as his people.

  39. Matthew 28 at verse 16.

  40. Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.

  41. But when they saw him, they worshipped him, but some doubted.

  42. Then Jesus came to them and said,

  43. We had two readings earlier.

  44. We had that remarkable reading from Isaiah chapter 45, which contains verse 22,

    Isaiah 45 chapter mention

  45. Look unto me, and be ye saved all the ends of the earth, for I am God, and there is none else.

  46. We had the parable of the great banquet from Luke, which tells us that all is now ready,

  47. and that the multitude is to be invited to this table, to this table of blessing,

  48. to this overflowing table of bounty.

  49. So there you have these two pictures of a worldwide invitation, of a worldwide celebration,

  50. in the Old Testament, in the New Testament, that there is something that God has done

  51. that relates to every man, woman, and child, every nation, every tribe, every tongue.

  52. So it's not surprising, therefore, when Jesus leaves this earth,

  53. that he leaves us his people with this command,

  54. that we are to go and tell this world that they are invited,

  55. that they are welcome, that there is a banquet that is prepared,

  56. that there is an invitation that is set out,

  57. and that we, like the servants in that parable,

  58. we are to follow the master's commands,

  59. to go wherever, to go wherever he sends us,

  60. and to tell that the invitation is out,

  61. to the highways, to the hedges,

  62. you know, to the lame, to the blind,

  63. to whoever we meet,

  64. here, and to the ends of the earth.

  65. I just want to introduce you to a famous character from history.

  66. I'm a student of history,

  67. that's why I came here as it was many years ago.

  68. I wanted to study the history of Scotland,

  69. and it's taken me so long, I've just decided to stay.

  70. There was a man called Robert Morrison.

  71. Morrison was half English and half Scottish,

  72. he had a Scottish name,

  73. and he grew up in Northumberland,

  74. and he felt a profound call to go to China.

  75. So, now, let me just put you in context here.

  76. At this particular stage, William Carey had already gone to India,

  77. that was a first,

  78. but no Protestant missionary had ever gone to China.

  79. Just didn't happen.

  80. There were no British ships that would carry a missionary to China.

  81. You see, the trade with China was so valuable,

  82. the last thing you would want is Christians to get in the way of making money.

  83. You know, opium, for example, was a great way of making money.

  84. You don't want Christians to come into the equation,

  85. and the last thing that you would want, of course,

  86. would be Chinese people to become Christians.

  87. That would really spoil a good business venture.

  88. But Morrison had this sense of call,

  89. and he was undiminished.

  90. So, instead of, he couldn't travel from Britain to China,

  91. but he could travel to the United States,

  92. and he could travel from the United States to China.

  93. And when he bought his ticket and explained what he was going to do,

  94. the booking agent asked him this.

  95. He said,

  96. Do you really expect to make an impression on the idolatry of the great Chinese empire?

  97. To which he replied,

  98. No, sir, but I expect God will.

  99. So here was a man who had faith,

  100. and he said he prayed a prayer,

  101. and this is,

  102. I would caution you against the prayers that you pray,

  103. because you need to be very careful about the prayers that you pray,

  104. because if you pray certain prayers,

  105. watch out for the way in which they might be answered.

  106. He prayed,

  107. God, send me to that part of the mission field,

  108. where the difficulties are the greatest,

  109. and to all human appearances the most insurmountable.

  110. God answered that prayer,

  111. sent Robert Morrison to Canton, China.

  112. We know it as Guangzhou.

  113. It's one of the coastal cities right near Hong Kong in southern China.

  114. Now, at this point,

  115. no Protestant missionary had ever been sent to China,

  116. and Morrison goes and spends 27 years in China.

  117. And you might think,

  118. Wow, that's a long time to go.

  119. He taught himself Chinese.

  120. He wrote a Chinese-English dictionary,

  121. a six-volume Chinese-English dictionary.

  122. He translated the Bible into Chinese.

  123. But 27 years,

  124. he saw only 10 converts.

  125. And you might think,

  126. at the end of 27 years,

  127. not too much to show for it.

  128. Not too much fruit.

  129. Not too much blessing.

  130. We'll come back to Morrison in a moment.

  131. But there was a man who heard the call and went.

  132. He heard the Great Commission

  133. and recognized it for what it was,

  134. a command.

  135. And you see,

  136. when we read the Bible,

  137. we need to read the Bible

  138. and understand what is being said to us.

  139. If there's a statement,

  140. we need to believe it.

  141. If there's a promise,

  142. we need to cherish it.

  143. But if there's a command,

  144. we need to obey it.

  145. And here we have an impossible command.

  146. But notice that the impossible command

  147. comes in a greater context.

  148. Because this impossible command

  149. to go and make disciples of all nations

  150. comes within the greater impossibility

  151. of the early part of chapter 28 of Matthew.

  152. After Sabbath at dawn on the first day of the week,

  153. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary

  154. went to look at the tomb.

  155. There was a violent earthquake.

  156. For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven

  157. and going to the tomb,

  158. rolled back the stone and sat on it.

  159. His appearance was like lightning

  160. and his clothes were white as snow.

  161. The guards were so afraid of him,

  162. they shook and became like dead men.

  163. The angel said to the women,

  164. And do not be afraid,

  165. for I know that you are looking for Jesus

  166. who was crucified.

  167. He is not here.

  168. He has risen,

  169. just as he said.

  170. So in order to appreciate the impossible command,

  171. let us first appreciate the impossible event.

  172. That Jesus Christ died,

  173. he was buried,

  174. and on the third day of the week,

  175. he rose from the dead.

  176. Now, I'm not a medical doctor,

  177. but dead people have a tendency to stay dead.

  178. Dead people have a tendency to stay silent.

  179. But Jesus rose from the dead,

  180. and the risen living Jesus is now speaking.

  181. Dead people tended to stay dead 2,000 years ago.

  182. It's not a modern phenomenon.

  183. It tended to occur that way,

  184. that when people died, they were buried.

  185. That was the end of the story.

  186. But in Jesus' case,

  187. in each of the gospel accounts,

  188. Matthew 27, the crucifixion,

  189. is followed by Matthew 28.

  190. Mark 15, the crucifixion,

  191. is followed by Mark 16.

  192. Luke 23, crucifixion,

  193. is followed by Luke 24.

  194. And John chapter 19

    John 19 chapter mention

  195. is followed by John chapter 20 and 21.

    John 20 chapter mention

  196. Jesus died,

  197. and yet there is another chapter.

  198. That's impossible.

  199. And yet God delights in doing the impossible.

  200. And that's our indicative.

  201. Jesus Christ is alive.

  202. Jesus Christ is risen.

  203. And the risen living Jesus speaks.

  204. And he speaks with all power,

  205. and he speaks with all authority.

  206. So the impossible event

  207. is the foundation for this impossible command.

  208. And let's look more closely

  209. exactly at what Jesus is saying here.

  210. Because it really comes down

  211. to three different statements.

  212. We have this impossible command,

  213. which we'll call the Great Commission,

  214. but it's comprised of three

  215. different propositional statements.

  216. We have a great claim,

  217. we have a great command,

  218. and we have a great companion.

  219. Verse 18, the great claim.

  220. All authority in heaven

  221. and on earth has been given to me.

  222. The Bible makes quite clear

  223. that Jesus is the one

  224. through whom all things are created.

  225. Jesus is the one

  226. through whom all things are sustained.

  227. Jesus is the redeemer of mankind,

  228. and it will ultimately redeem all things.

  229. And he therefore can say

  230. with honesty and with integrity

  231. that all power,

  232. all authority rests with him.

  233. So when he gives a command,

  234. he has the resources

  235. to carry that command out.

  236. When he commissions,

  237. he has the resources

  238. to make certain

  239. that those who are commissioned

  240. are equipped, enabled.

  241. There's never a time

  242. where Jesus makes a command

  243. where he doesn't accompany

  244. the command with the resources.

  245. That indeed would be

  246. completely impossible.

  247. But Jesus has all power.

  248. Jesus has all authority.

  249. He's the king of kings.

  250. He's the lord of lords.

  251. And we know who he is.

  252. And we know what he has done.

  253. So the work of the gospel

  254. has been done.

  255. All that is left to us

  256. is to say and to tell

  257. and to show.

  258. So the great claim,

  259. and then that's followed

  260. by the great command.

  261. Therefore, go.

  262. And that connection word,

  263. therefore.

  264. We go because of who he is.

  265. We go because of what he has done.

  266. We go because of the authority

  267. that has been invested in him.

  268. And therefore, he can tell us

  269. to go forth in his name.

  270. But notice the scope.

  271. Go and make disciples

  272. of all the nations.

  273. Not some, not most.

  274. Not those that are near at hand.

  275. Not those that are inclined

  276. to the message.

  277. But all peoples.

  278. All nations.

  279. All tribes.

  280. All tongues.

  281. That we are to go

  282. and not make converts.

  283. But this word disciple

  284. is a much bigger word

  285. than a convert.

  286. We're not just trying

  287. to persuade people

  288. to think certain things

  289. or to accept certain propositions.

  290. But we want to see followers

  291. of Jesus

  292. in every land,

  293. in every nation.

  294. We want to see men and women

  295. and young and old.

  296. We want to see them

  297. consecrated to Christ.

  298. Trusting in him.

  299. Believing in him.

  300. And walking in his footsteps.

  301. That's what we are.

  302. If you're a Christian here tonight,

  303. you're a disciple.

  304. He's the teacher.

  305. You're the learner.

  306. He's the king.

  307. You're the subject.

  308. He is the one

  309. who has offered sacrifice

  310. on your behalf

  311. so that you can be made pure.

  312. You can be made clean.

  313. He's in charge.

  314. He's in control.

  315. So we make disciples

  316. of all the nations.

  317. And you think,

  318. Jesus, don't you realize

  319. who you're talking to?

  320. Don't you realize

  321. that you're talking

  322. to the disciples?

  323. These are the people

  324. that are slow to understand.

  325. These are the people

  326. that are so inconsistent.

  327. in their Christian witness.

  328. They get it wrong so often.

  329. They stumble so regularly.

  330. And doesn't Jesus realize

  331. what we are like?

  332. We're not the wise.

  333. We're not the strong.

  334. We're not the consistent.

  335. Is he indeed entrusting

  336. the evangelism of the world

  337. into the hands of us,

  338. his people?

  339. Because you would think,

  340. well, he's placing it

  341. in very unsteady hands.

  342. He's placing it

  343. on a very insecure footing.

  344. Or is he doing something

  345. that he knows

  346. what he's doing?

  347. Does he actually know

  348. what he's doing?

  349. Because, you see,

  350. when he uses instruments

  351. like us,

  352. when he uses weak instruments

  353. to accomplish strong purpose,

  354. it becomes obvious

  355. that it's not about us.

  356. It must be about the one

  357. that we are speaking of.

  358. When he uses foolish instruments

  359. like we so often are

  360. to accomplish his all-wise plans,

  361. it must be his wisdom.

  362. And when he can take

  363. a small group of people,

  364. 11 disciples at that particular time,

  365. and when they can turn

  366. the world upside down,

  367. when they can transform

  368. the existing Roman Empire,

  369. when they can bring the gospel

  370. to the very heart

  371. of the empire in Rome,

  372. and from Rome to everywhere.

  373. And we see today

  374. that throughout the world today,

  375. the 21st century

  376. is the century

  377. that has witnessed

  378. the greatest advance

  379. of the Christian gospel.

  380. Today, there are more people

  381. in the world

  382. who are Christians

  383. than ever at any point

  384. in the past.

  385. There's also greater levels

  386. of persecution

  387. in the 21st century

  388. than at any point

  389. in the past.

  390. The 20th century

  391. was the most dangerous century

  392. to be a Christian.

  393. That will be eclipsed

  394. by the 21st century.

  395. The 20th century

  396. was the greatest century

  397. of advance

  398. in the Christian gospel.

  399. That will, too,

  400. be eclipsed

  401. in this,

  402. the 20th, 21st century.

  403. So the great claim

  404. that he has all authority

  405. in heaven and on earth,

  406. this great command

  407. where he says,

  408. go and make disciples

  409. of all nations,

  410. baptizing them

  411. in the name

  412. of the Father,

  413. the Son,

  414. and the Holy Spirit.

  415. And this word name

  416. is so important

  417. because whenever the Bible

  418. speaks of the name of God,

  419. what is included there

  420. is everything.

  421. When we speak of his name,

  422. we speak of his authority,

  423. we speak of his dignity,

  424. we speak of his honor,

  425. we speak of his character,

  426. we speak of his nature.

  427. All of this is tied up

  428. in his name.

  429. That's why the commandments

  430. are so clear

  431. that we are not to misuse

  432. the name of God.

  433. We are not to disrespect God

  434. or disrespect his name.

  435. Why?

  436. Because his name

  437. encapsulates his nature

  438. and his character.

  439. So the name of the Father,

  440. Son,

  441. and Holy Spirit

  442. is a powerful name.

  443. You see,

  444. when the name of God

  445. goes forth,

  446. watch out.

  447. Watch out

  448. because people

  449. that previously

  450. were hostile

  451. might come to find themselves

  452. embracing this gospel.

  453. Those who previously

  454. may have been indifferent

  455. may find their hearts

  456. strangely warmed

  457. to believe in this message.

  458. it doesn't seem to make sense,

  459. does it?

  460. How is it possible

  461. that even in that first century

  462. that this message

  463. would even go beyond

  464. the walls of Jerusalem,

  465. let alone beyond

  466. the confines of Judea,

  467. let alone into Samaria,

  468. the neighboring district?

  469. But how could it possibly

  470. get into Europe?

  471. How could it possibly

  472. reach the Gentiles

  473. who know nothing

  474. about the Old Testament?

  475. And yet,

  476. here we are,

  477. 21st century,

  478. Brunsfield,

  479. Edinburgh.

  480. How is it possible

  481. that we've come to this point?

  482. How is it possible

  483. that the gospel

  484. still continues

  485. to change hearts

  486. and change lives?

  487. Maybe that comes

  488. to our final point

  489. in the Great Commission,

  490. namely the Great Companion.

  491. Because not only

  492. do we have a claim

  493. that Jesus makes,

  494. not only do we have

  495. a command that Jesus gives,

  496. but he says that

  497. he will accompany us

  498. on this journey.

  499. That when we go,

  500. we never go alone.

  501. He always goes with us.

  502. But I think, sadly,

  503. the opposite

  504. can also be the case.

  505. If we don't go,

  506. if we don't obey,

  507. then we're left

  508. on our own.

  509. We're left

  510. on our own devices,

  511. we're left

  512. on our own resources,

  513. we're left

  514. with our own wisdom,

  515. because if we obey

  516. this command,

  517. he promises to be with us.

  518. But if we disregard

  519. or disobey this command,

  520. we cannot take for granted

  521. that he will be with us,

  522. guiding us,

  523. leading us,

  524. protecting us.

  525. So the claim,

  526. the command,

  527. and the companion,

  528. powerful and transformative.

  529. But I'd like to notice

  530. the,

  531. and this is taking us

  532. to the very end

  533. of the Bible,

  534. is if we have

  535. the impossible event,

  536. the impossible command,

  537. we have the impossible

  538. fulfillment.

  539. You see, John,

  540. if you think of the book

  541. of Revelation

  542. as a curtain

  543. that is drawn back,

  544. just briefly,

  545. the curtain is drawn back

  546. and you get a sight

  547. into what's behind

  548. or into what's ahead.

  549. And John the Apostle

  550. is given encouragement

  551. because the people of God

  552. are experiencing persecution.

  553. The curtain is pulled back

  554. in Revelation 7

  555. and verse 9.

  556. After this I looked

  557. and there before me

  558. was a great multitude

  559. that no one could count.

  560. A great multitude.

  561. You think of the great banquet.

  562. You think of the great invitation

  563. in Isaiah 45, 22.

  564. Look unto me

  565. and be ye saved

  566. all the ends of the earth

  567. for I am God

  568. and there is none.

  569. And now John sees

  570. a multitude.

  571. But where does this multitude

  572. come from?

  573. Oh, well, it comes

  574. from every nation,

  575. every tribe,

  576. every people,

  577. and every language.

  578. Now where are they gathered?

  579. They're gathered

  580. in front of the throne.

  581. And what are they doing?

  582. They are gathering there,

  583. celebrating and rejoicing

  584. that salvation belongs

  585. to our God

  586. who sits on the throne

  587. and to the Lamb.

  588. You see,

  589. there is an impossible conclusion

  590. or an impossible fulfillment

  591. that God has this command

  592. that he gives to his church

  593. and he pulls back the curtain

  594. and says,

  595. this is what it's going

  596. to look like.

  597. This is what it's going

  598. to look like

  599. when all the nations

  600. are gathered,

  601. when all the tribes

  602. are gathered,

  603. when all the tongues

  604. are represented.

  605. They will be gathered

  606. together in heaven

  607. worshiping the Lamb.

  608. Why?

  609. Because the people of God

  610. have taken this command

  611. seriously.

  612. They have gone

  613. and they have told.

  614. Let me give you

  615. a bit of the setting

  616. that we find ourselves

  617. in in the 21st century.

  618. Statistics tell us

  619. that every year

  620. in Scotland,

  621. 120 churches

  622. shut their doors.

  623. In 1966,

  624. the year that I was born,

  625. the Church of Scotland

  626. had a membership

  627. of 1.2 million people.

  628. That membership

  629. has dropped

  630. up to 325,000

  631. in the year 2018.

  632. That just gives you

  633. an idea

  634. that the Christian cause

  635. seems to be receding

  636. in Scotland.

  637. So when we say

  638. to go,

  639. that's not just

  640. to go to the ends

  641. of the earth,

  642. but that's to go

  643. to your corner,

  644. your street corner,

  645. to your neighborhood,

  646. to your family,

  647. to your friends,

  648. to your colleagues.

  649. Why?

  650. Because the cause

  651. of Scotland

  652. is at a low ebb

  653. right now.

  654. 120 churches

  655. shutting their doors

  656. each and every year.

  657. But let me give you

  658. one story of encouragement.

  659. Back in 2000,

  660. we had a church

  661. on the Royal Mile.

  662. The Free Church

  663. has a church

  664. on the Royal Mile

  665. called St. Columbus

  666. Free Church.

  667. Year 2000,

  668. the congregation

  669. reduced to about

  670. 30 people.

  671. There were no children.

  672. There was one elder.

  673. And the conventional wisdom

  674. said,

  675. this church is too small.

  676. This church is too old.

  677. Let's combine

  678. this small congregation

  679. with one of the other

  680. Edinburgh congregations

  681. and shut the door.

  682. Well, there was a friend

  683. of ours,

  684. of mine,

  685. who I know very well,

  686. and he spoke

  687. and he persuaded

  688. the church

  689. to give it one more try.

  690. 2001,

  691. they call

  692. a young man

  693. at the time,

  694. Derek Lament,

  695. from up north.

  696. Now, Derek left

  697. a very large,

  698. thriving congregation

  699. in Easter Ross

  700. to come down

  701. to this small gathering

  702. in Edinburgh.

  703. It doesn't really

  704. make much sense,

  705. does it?

  706. To leave a large church

  707. that's thriving,

  708. come to a small church.

  709. To leave a church

  710. where you have

  711. an unlimited appointment,

  712. you can stay there

  713. for as long as you want,

  714. and to be told,

  715. well, you might get

  716. five years out of this

  717. if you're lucky.

  718. Well, the rest

  719. of the story,

  720. of course,

  721. is not so much

  722. about the people

  723. or the personalities,

  724. but it's about

  725. the God who was preached

  726. and the gospel

  727. that was proclaimed.

  728. So today,

  729. more than 200 people

  730. would gather

  731. at the same church

  732. on the Royal Mile,

  733. but from that church,

  734. three new churches

  735. have been planted.

  736. And if you sum up

  737. all those four churches,

  738. now over 700 worshipers

  739. may be gathering

  740. every Sunday

  741. worshiping Jesus.

  742. So it just goes

  743. to show what you can do

  744. if you have

  745. a Great Commission mentality

  746. for Edinburgh.

  747. You'll say to yourself,

  748. okay, we've got

  749. a small gathering

  750. here today,

  751. but let's say

  752. all the folks

  753. of Brunsfield

  754. were gathered together

  755. in this church.

  756. You would say,

  757. well, there's a healthy church

  758. here, right,

  759. in the heart of one

  760. of the neighborhoods

  761. in Edinburgh.

  762. And it wouldn't make

  763. much sense, would it,

  764. to send some people

  765. out of this congregation

  766. to another place

  767. in town,

  768. because that would

  769. make this church weaker.

  770. That would mean

  771. there'd be fewer people.

  772. So, you know,

  773. you don't need

  774. to be an accountant

  775. to kind of put that together,

  776. but God has a way

  777. of making up deficits.

  778. God has a way

  779. of replacing people.

  780. And God has a way

  781. of making certain

  782. that he is

  783. no person's debtor.

  784. When we go forth

  785. in faith,

  786. he has a way

  787. of multiplying things

  788. in a way

  789. that we cannot imagine.

  790. And I'd like to encourage us

  791. to consider

  792. the Great Commission.

  793. And maybe for that

  794. means some of you

  795. that might mean

  796. to consider

  797. leaving your place,

  798. your place of birth,

  799. leaving the place

  800. of comfort,

  801. maybe going

  802. to a distant place.

  803. But for many of us,

  804. it might mean

  805. going to a different

  806. neighborhood.

  807. It might mean

  808. considering,

  809. well, actually,

  810. you know,

  811. there's quite a few of us

  812. in a particular

  813. part of town.

  814. Maybe we could

  815. start a church there.

  816. Maybe we could

  817. reverse this 120 churches

  818. closing each year.

  819. Maybe we could see

  820. 120 new churches

  821. starting each year

  822. or more.

  823. But if you're interested

  824. in the global situation,

  825. we're told in

  826. Revelation 7

  827. that a great multitude

  828. from every nation,

  829. tribe, people,

  830. and language

  831. was gathered.

  832. The missiologists

  833. tell us

  834. that 17,441

  835. people groups

  836. exist in the world,

  837. of which 7,414

  838. are unreached.

  839. That means

  840. people from those groups

  841. don't know about Jesus.

  842. They have no means

  843. of knowing about Jesus.

  844. They were like

  845. the Chinese people

  846. 200 or so years ago

  847. when Robert Morrison

  848. left the UK

  849. to go to China.

  850. They had previously

  851. no knowledge of Jesus.

  852. Now, I mentioned earlier

  853. that Morrison left,

  854. spent 27 years,

  855. died in China,

  856. and at the end

  857. of the story,

  858. he had only 10 people

  859. who had come to faith.

  860. But I tell you

  861. what he did

  862. was he laid a foundation.

  863. So in just a generation later,

  864. a man called Hudson Taylor

  865. founded the China Inland Mission.

  866. And scores of missionaries

  867. went out from the UK

  868. and throughout the world

  869. to China

  870. with the gospel

  871. and brought the message

  872. of the gospel

  873. not just to the coastal areas

  874. like Canton,

  875. but brought it

  876. into the inland districts

  877. of China.

  878. So many,

  879. that by 1939,

  880. I think the high water mark

  881. was there were over 1,300

  882. China Inland Missionaries

  883. in China.

  884. The story continues

  885. until after the war.

  886. Remember Chairman Mao?

  887. He expelled

  888. all the foreign missionaries,

  889. all the foreign missions.

  890. Christianity

  891. was a Western religion

  892. and if we get rid

  893. of the Westerners,

  894. we'll get rid of Christianity.

  895. Probably in 1949,

  896. there were about

  897. a million Chinese believers.

  898. And Mao succeeded

  899. in a sense

  900. that there were no longer

  901. a million Chinese Christians.

  902. But he succeeded

  903. in a way that he never expected

  904. because there's 100 million

  905. Chinese Christians today.

  906. But it all began

  907. with a man called

  908. Robert Morrison

  909. who felt a call

  910. to go to China.

  911. He wrote a dictionary,

  912. translated the Bible,

  913. laid the foundation

  914. for all future

  915. missionary work

  916. in China.

  917. And God blessed

  918. that work,

  919. God blessed that worker

  920. so that today,

  921. China is one of the

  922. great sources

  923. of missionaries now.

  924. Not just receiving,

  925. but sending people

  926. all over.

  927. And what you find

  928. in any city center

  929. congregation

  930. in the United States

  931. or in the United Kingdom,

  932. that there are Chinese people

  933. that are coming to faith.

  934. They're coming to church.

  935. They want to share

  936. their faith

  937. with their families,

  938. with their friends.

  939. Why?

  940. Because 200 years ago,

  941. a man heard the call,

  942. went to China,

  943. gave his life

  944. in the service of Jesus.

  945. So the great command

  946. is to go,

  947. to make disciples

  948. of all nations.

  949. Jesus says,

  950. all authority

  951. on heaven and on earth

  952. rests on him.

  953. And when we go

  954. to our neighbors,

  955. to our friends,

  956. to the ends of the earth,

  957. we are guaranteed

  958. that Jesus Christ

  959. goes with us.

  960. Watch out

  961. what happens

  962. when we take

  963. that command

  964. seriously.

  965. Hudson Taylor,

  966. the great missionary

  967. to China,

  968. said,

  969. the great commission

  970. is not an option

  971. to be considered.

  972. It is a command

  973. to be obeyed.

  974. Let us pray.

  975. Father,

  976. I thank you

  977. for each one of us

  978. gathered here today.

  979. And I pray

  980. for this church.

  981. I give you thanks

  982. for its vitality.

  983. We give you thanks

  984. for the many lives

  985. that it has already touched.

  986. And I pray

  987. that you might give

  988. this congregation

  989. of your people wisdom

  990. to see how they may

  991. contribute to

  992. the work

  993. of the great commission.

  994. How they might give,

  995. how they might pray,

  996. how they might go.

  997. Maybe that work

  998. might be in the city

  999. of Edinburgh.

  1000. Maybe it might be

  1001. into surrounding districts

  1002. of this city.

  1003. Maybe it might be

  1004. to different areas

  1005. of the country

  1006. of Scotland.

1007. But maybe it might be

1008. that some from this place

  1009. might go forth

  1010. to some of those

  1011. 7,400 people groups

  1012. who know nothing

  1013. about Jesus

1014. to go and to tell them

1015. that there is a banquet

  1016. that is prepared.

1017. To go and tell them

  1018. that there's an invitation

  1019. that is given

1020. by the King of Heaven

1021. that they are to look

  1022. to Jesus.

1023. And in looking to Jesus

  1024. they will be saved.

  1025. So I pray

  1026. for this congregation.

1027. I pray for its leadership.

1028. I pray for its membership.

  1029. And I pray, Lord,

1030. that you might be pleased

  1031. to bless this people,

  1032. to multiply them,

  1033. that they in turn

  1034. might be a blessing

1035. in the lives of others.

1036. For we pray in Jesus' name.

  1037. Amen.
