  1. Hello and welcome and let's just pray before we begin.

  2. God and Father we thank you for your word, that we have it in our language, that we can openly read it.

  3. And we pray that you will speak to each one tonight as we open it up.

  4. We pray these things in the name of the Lord Jesus. Amen.

  5. So to get us going, I want you to go with me.

  6. So we're in a spaceship, we're on our way to the International Space Station.

  7. And we get there, we look down on the earth for the very first time from space.

  8. We see its fullness. We see the light, the colours of it.

  9. We see the vastness of the space.

  10. We also see the stillness.

  11. You know, nothing could prepare you for that sight of seeing that for the first time.

  12. No matter how many pictures you'd seen or videos you'd watched, I don't think anything could prepare you for that sight.

  13. You know, this is actually called the overview effect.

  14. There is a term for this phenomena.

  15. And it really changes astronauts' lives.

  16. There's many reported instances where astronauts return completely changed.

  17. Whether it's their priorities or their perspective on life.

  18. They come back, change people.

  19. They see the fragility of life on this small planet.

  20. They see themselves as being so small.

  21. They also see themselves as global citizens rather than individual nations.

  22. You know, seeing the earth in this full way, it shatters what the astronauts previously thought about life.

  23. It causes a change of their priorities and their perspective.

  24. Why are we talking about this?

  25. Well, tonight, Isaiah sees a vision which is far greater and more life-changing than seeing the earth.

  26. To have a bit of a catch-up, so we are in Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  27. Isaiah is written around 700 BC.

  28. The nation of Israel is split into the kingdom of Israel in the north, whose capital is Samaria.

  29. And the kingdom of Judah in the south, whose capital is Jerusalem.

  30. Isaiah is speaking in this book predominantly to God's people.

  31. God's covenant people, the line of Abraham, the people of Israel.

  32. And we've had five chapters before this, which we've gone through in the last few weeks.

  33. And these are really like summary of the prophecies in this book.

  34. You can imagine them like a sky full of heavy, dark clouds.

  35. And yet, you know, when you get those little rays of light shining through these dark clouds,

  36. this is what the first five chapters are like.

  37. Because we see the judgment, this dark judgment on this faithless nation of Judah.

  38. Some words quoting from the first five chapters, we see that they have rebelled.

  39. They are sinful.

  40. They have stumbled.

  41. They have fallen.

  42. That the Lord will strike.

  43. But we also see these glimmering bits of light.

  44. There is hope in this judgment.

  45. We see that the house of the Lord shall be established.

  46. That they will be lifted up.

  47. That they will be the people of Zion.

  48. So where does that leave us?

  49. Well, in chapter six, we see Isaiah's commissioning.

  50. It marks a new section of this book.

  51. We're going to split it into three different sections.

  52. First of all, we're going to look at the glory of the Lord in verses one to four.

  53. Secondly, we're going to look at the redemption of Isaiah in five to eight.

  54. We're also then thirdly going to look at the judgment and hope of God's people in verses nine to 13.

  55. So first of all, the glory of the Lord.

  56. Verses one to four.

  57. Please have it open in front of you and go with it through me.

  58. Through it with me.

  59. So we see that King Uzziah dies.

  60. Now we can date this as 740 BC.

  61. This is recorded elsewhere.

  62. He was called the last godly king of Judah.

  63. And yet many years before his death, he had gone against God.

  64. He had lost his way.

  65. And this is typical of the nation of Judah.

  66. They had started on this moral and cultural decline, which never recovered.

  67. They were on a downward spiral.

  68. That's the situation we're in.

  69. Now we're going to look at the glory of the Lord.

  70. So what does glory mean?

  71. Well, I love a dictionary definition.

  72. First of all, the dictionary says that glory means exaltation, praise and honour.

  73. Second meaning is something that brings or is worthy of praise.

  74. The third definition is thanksgiving, adoration or worship.

  75. And the example is glory be to God.

  76. It can also mean splendor.

  77. So that's what glory means according to the dictionary.

  78. But how do we see God's glory here?

  79. Well, Isaiah sees the Lord, a glorious image.

  80. In verse one here, we see the Lord in a place of excellence.

  81. Follow with me through the words and the phrases that is used here.

  82. High and exalted speaks of his power.

  83. Seated on a throne.

  84. The Lord is the king of kings.

  85. He has a throne.

  86. And unlike Judah's ruling kings, the king of kings is permanent.

  87. He is king forever.

  88. We also see that the train of his robe filled the temple.

  89. You know, clothes show power.

  90. They show status.

  91. Royalty across the world have different garments that they wear for special occasions to show who they are.

  92. Even us, we wear designer goods to show our status or our wealth.

  93. And you know, the Lord's robe filled the temple.

  94. It shows his fullness and who he is.

  95. We have this in two to four, we see the seraphim.

  96. And these are heavenly beings.

  97. And we see that they have six wings.

  98. Two of which covered their faces.

  99. It speaks of reverence for the Lord.

  100. Complete reverence to him.

  101. Two of which covered their feet.

  102. It shows their humility.

  103. Their humbleness.

  104. And the other two they used for flying.

  105. They were ready and willing to do God's work.

  106. As we see.

  107. You know, we see that they are calling to one another.

  108. Holy, holy, holy.

  109. You know, this repetition is used for emphasis to show the Lord's purity.

  110. To emphasize his holiness.

  111. He is the Lord Almighty.

  112. This is his authority that he has.

  113. He is the glory of creation.

  114. The whole earth is full of his glory.

  115. He is glorious through creation.

  116. We see that the temple, the post shook.

  117. And that it filled with smoke.

  118. This is God's presence.

  119. God's presence fills the temple.

  120. Think of all that imagery.

  121. What a marvelous image that is created in our minds.

  122. What a marvelous image that Isaiah saw.

  123. Try to grasp the glory of the Lord here.

  124. The respect.

  125. The honor.

  126. The majesty.

  127. A modern word may be the awesomeness of God.

  128. But you know, words are not enough.

  129. And put yourself in Isaiah's shoes here.

  130. You know, this is in the days before CGI.

  131. This is in the days before blockbuster movies and the Marvel Empire.

  132. Even before virtual reality.

  133. You can see why Isaiah responded the way he did.

  134. Why he was so shocked.

  135. You know, we can never fully see God.

  136. But we would do well to ponder on his greatness and his majesty.

  137. Is this the God here described that we hold in our minds?

  138. These four verses are to fill us with awe and wonder at our great big God.

  139. Our God is a great big God.

  140. Our God is a great big God.

  141. Do we sometimes make God little in our minds and do we doubt God?

  142. Our God is a big God.

  143. We see how the seraphim acted here.

  144. They were in complete reverence to him.

  145. And they were ready to serve.

  146. Look at how the posts acted.

  147. If the posts were moved, then we should be as well.

  148. You know, like the astronauts seeing the earth in this new full vastness,

  149. in this new way, God is shown in this way.

  150. And it is to have a life changing effect on us.

  151. And you know what happened to Isaiah who's seeing this firsthand?

  152. Well, he responds in the appropriate way.

  153. That takes us to our second section, verses 5 to 8,

  154. the redemption of Isaiah.

  155. The redemption of Isaiah.

  156. God's glory, his worthiness,

  157. it throws Isaiah into personal confession of his own unworthiness.

  158. We see this in verse 5.

  159. Isaiah says,

  160. Woe to me.

  161. This reminds us of what Luca was going through last week

  162. with all the woes of chapter 5.

  163. Now this woe is a legal term for being ruined or for being dead.

  164. He follows it up by saying,

  165. I am ruined.

  166. I am a man of unclean lips.

  167. Isaiah is saying here that he is not worthy,

  168. that he has sinned.

  169. It's a personal confession of his own position.

  170. You know,

  171. Moses actually uses this same phrase.

  172. He uses,

  173. he says that he is a man of unclean lips

  174. when he is arguing with God

  175. why he should not go to Pharaoh.

  176. He's saying,

  177. Moses was saying that I am not good enough

  178. to do this for you.

  179. We see that Isaiah says,

  180. he lives among a people of unclean lips.

  181. And his eyes have seen the King,

  182. the Lord Almighty.

  183. You know,

  184. seeing God is associated with death in the Old Testament.

  185. Moses,

  186. again,

  187. he asked to see the Lord's glory.

  188. And yet what God does

  189. is that God

  190. puts him in a cleft of a rock

  191. and God passes by.

  192. And Moses was only allowed

  193. to glimpse the Lord's back

  194. to see his glory.

  195. Exodus 33,

  196. in this episode,

  197. it says,

  198. you cannot see my face

  199. for no one shall see me and live.

  200. So you can see Isaiah's fear

  201. and his worry here,

  202. his unworthiness.

  203. You think of the New Testament,

  204. Saul or Paul was blinded

  205. in Acts chapter nine

  206. because the Lord's presence

  207. came upon him.

  208. He was blinded

  209. until made well again.

  210. Grasping the glory

  211. of the Lord

  212. should cause personal confession

  213. of our own unworthiness,

  214. our own sinfulness,

  215. our own hopelessness.

  216. How often,

  217. myself included,

  218. do we think we're okay,

  219. that we're not that bad?

  220. It's only with comparison

  221. to the holy,

  222. holy,

  223. holy Lord Almighty,

  224. do we see

  225. how we really are.

  226. A colleague the other day

  227. was describing

  228. how during homeschooling,

  229. as many people are doing

  230. at the moment,

  231. that his son keeps

  232. finishing his maths work

  233. in the record time

  234. that it's so quick

  235. and he's chuffed,

  236. he's chuffed

  237. that he's done it so quickly.

  238. But you know,

  239. it's only when the answers

  240. are compared to

  241. and he's actually got them

  242. all wrong

  243. because he's rushed them,

  244. do we see

  245. how he really got on.

  246. For us,

  247. it's only in comparison

  248. to the holy,

  249. almighty Lord

  250. that we realise

  251. that we are ruined.

  252. This personal confession

  253. leads to Isaiah's sin

  254. being atoned for

  255. by grace

  256. in verses 6 and 7.

  257. we see that

  258. a live coal

  259. is taken

  260. from the altar

  261. and that his guilt

  262. is taken away

  263. and his sin

  264. is atoned for.

  265. This altar

  266. that this coal

  267. was taken from

  268. would have been

  269. where the blood sacrifices

  270. were burnt

  271. in the temple.

  272. The blood sacrifices

  273. atoned for the sin.

  274. You know,

  275. Jesus' blood

  276. was shed

  277. 2,000 years ago

  278. and this act

  279. can reconcile us

  280. to God.

  281. Jesus has paid

  282. the price

  283. through his

  284. sacrificial death

  285. so that our guilt

  286. can be taken away

  287. so that our sin

  288. can be atoned for.

  289. We need to

  290. have this personal

  291. confession

  292. as Isaiah did

  293. of our own

  294. sinfulness,

  295. our own

  296. unworthiness

  297. before God.

  298. You'll notice here

  299. that Isaiah

  300. didn't do the work.

  301. He didn't do anything.

  302. It was done

  303. for him.

  304. The coal

  305. was brought to him

  306. and put upon

  307. his own lips.

  308. That is like us.

  309. The Lord Jesus

  310. has done the work

  311. we need to

  312. accept

  313. and confess.

  314. And you know,

  315. Isaiah's name,

  316. it means salvation

  317. is from the Lord.

  318. Salvation is not

  319. from within.

  320. It is from the Lord.

  321. In verse 8,

  322. we see

  323. that Isaiah

  324. responds to

  325. God's call

  326. of service.

  327. The Lord says,

  328. whom shall I send

  329. and who will go

  330. for us?

  331. God calls

  332. Isaiah here.

  333. He was chosen

  334. to see this vision.

  335. He was chosen

  336. here.

  337. What does Isaiah

  338. do?

  339. Well,

  340. he says,

  341. here am I.

  342. Send me.

  343. The willing

  344. servant

  345. responds in love

  346. to the call.

  347. You know,

  348. Isaiah can only

  349. respond in this way

  350. because of what

  351. has happened to him,

  352. because his guilt

  353. has been taken away.

  354. because his sin

  355. is atoned for.

  356. His newfound

  357. position in God's

  358. eyes

  359. means that he can

  360. respond in love

  361. to go and speak

  362. to the nation

  363. of Judah,

  364. to God's people.

  365. We are called

  366. to serve God

  367. also,

  368. and not out of

  369. a sense of

  370. repayment

  371. or some sense

  372. of duty,

  373. but in response

  374. and love

  375. to what the Lord

  376. has done for us

  377. already.

  378. And you see

  379. that Isaiah

  380. responded.

  381. He didn't negotiate.

  382. He didn't know

  383. what was coming.

  384. It wasn't

  385. conditional.

  386. Like Moses,

  387. who argued,

  388. who negotiated,

  389. they said he

  390. wasn't good

  391. enough.

  392. Isaiah

  393. just answers

  394. the call

  395. faithfully.

  396. You know,

  397. back in primary

  398. school,

  399. we used to have

  400. a particular

  401. teacher who

  402. quite often

  403. used to ask,

  404. right,

  405. who wants to

  406. do something

  407. for me?

  408. You know,

  409. most people,

  410. including myself,

  411. would volunteer,

  412. me, me, me, me, me,

  413. me, I want to do it.

  414. Most of the time

  415. because it involved

  416. getting out of the

  417. class so you could

  418. muck about in the

  419. corridors for a while

  420. en route.

  421. You know,

  422. the teacher would

  423. always say,

  424. you don't even know

  425. what it is yet

  426. that I'm asking you

  427. to do.

  428. And she was right.

  429. And you know,

  430. as years went on,

  431. the response became

  432. less enthusiastic

  433. with age and it

  434. turned into a few

  435. mumbles going,

  436. well,

  437. depends,

  438. depends what it is.

  439. You know,

  440. this is not the case

  441. for Isaiah.

  442. He says,

  443. here I am,

  444. send me.

  445. We are called

  446. to do God's work.

  447. Whether or not

  448. it suits us

  449. or whether it

  450. piques our interest.

  451. We are to do so

  452. out of love

  453. and thankfulness

  454. to our Lord

  455. and Saviour.

  456. We have been

  457. chosen.

  458. So finally,

  459. we see the

  460. judgment and hope

  461. of God's people

  462. in verses 9 to 13.

  463. We see the

  464. judgment for Judah,

  465. the disbelieving

  466. people.

  467. In verses 9 to 13a,

  468. 13 and a half.

  469. Judgment for Judah,

  470. the disbelieving

  471. people.

  472. Isaiah is called

  473. to be God's voice

  474. to Judah.

  475. You know,

  476. the people of Judah

  477. were God's covenant

  478. chosen people.

  479. people.

  480. And yet,

  481. this is a really

  482. bleak picture.

  483. When reading this

  484. for the first time,

  485. I wrote beside it

  486. bleak.

  487. Isaiah is told

  488. that his ministry

  489. here will not be

  490. successful.

  491. The people are

  492. completely opposite

  493. to Isaiah's

  494. new position.

  495. The people are

  496. deaf.

  497. They are blind.

  498. They do not

  499. understand.

  500. Whereas Isaiah,

  501. he has seen,

  502. he has heard,

  503. and he understands.

  504. Isaiah has seen

  505. the Lord.

  506. The people do

  507. not see.

  508. The people are in

  509. the dark.

  510. He is in the

  511. light.

  512. Judah were a

  513. nation of

  514. hardened hearts.

  515. You know,

  516. there was

  517. continual

  518. disbelief from

  519. Judah.

  520. This wasn't

  521. their first

  522. chance.

  523. It was

  524. continual

  525. rejection of

  526. God.

  527. This shows

  528. the hardening

  529. effect here

  530. of the

  531. gospel.

  532. And it is

  533. the same

  534. for us

  535. nowadays.

  536. But this

  537. is actually

  538. should be an

  539. encouragement

  540. to us.

  541. Stay with me.

  542. We aren't to

  543. be downhearted

  544. or we aren't

  545. to be,

  546. see ourselves

  547. as failures

  548. when the

  549. gospel doesn't

  550. reach people,

  551. when they do

  552. not respond to

  553. what we are

  554. trying to say

  555. or when we

  556. invite them

  557. along to

  558. various events.

  559. It is God

  560. who saves.

  561. We are to

  562. faithfully do

  563. his work,

  564. to witness,

  565. to speak his

  566. word,

  567. but it is

  568. God who

  569. saves.

  570. in verse

  571. 11,

  572. in pain,

  573. Isaiah

  574. says,

  575. for how

  576. long,

  577. Lord?

  578. You know,

  579. these were

  580. his people,

  581. this was

  582. his nation.

  583. He would

  584. want them

  585. to see

  586. and believe

  587. like him.

  588. We should

  589. want those

  590. around us,

  591. those whom

  592. we love,

  593. to see

  594. and believe

  595. like we

  596. do.

  597. we see

  598. that Judah

  599. will be

  600. ruined,

  601. this word

  602. ruined again.

  603. You know,

  604. after this

  605. in chapter

  606. seven onwards,

  607. we see

  608. that the

  609. nation of

  610. Judah is

  611. in war.

  612. They go

  613. into captivity

  614. in Babylon

  615. and there

  616. is destruction

  617. for Judah

  618. ahead.

  619. But there

  620. is this

  621. glimmer of

  622. hope in

  623. verse 13b,

  624. 13,

  625. the second

  626. half of

  627. that verse.

  628. There's

  629. this glimmer

  630. of hope

  631. like those

  632. light beams

  633. shining through

  634. the dark

  635. clouds.

  636. There's this

  637. strange image

  638. of stumps

  639. being left

  640. after trees

  641. are chopped

  642. down.

  643. If you've

  644. ever been

  645. up on

  646. Forestry

  647. Commission land,

  648. you'll have

  649. seen vast

  650. areas where

  651. the whole

  652. trees have

  653. been felled

  654. and yet

  655. they leave

  656. the stumps.

  657. And you

  658. know,

  659. these two

  660. types of

  661. trees that

  662. are mentioned,

  663. these grow

  664. again from

  665. that stage.

  666. Branches and

  667. roots come

  668. out again.

  669. There is

  670. regeneration.

  671. There is

  672. new birth.

  673. Judgment

  674. will take

  675. place on

  676. this unbelieving

  677. nation and

  678. yet there is

  679. hope.

  680. Grace will

  681. abound.

  682. This nation

  683. does not

  684. deserve God's

  685. grace and

  686. yet they get

  687. it anyway.

  688. And you

  689. know,

  690. there will

  691. be a

  692. remnant,

  693. this holy

  694. seed.

  695. A remnant

  696. will return

  697. from Babylonian

  698. captivity.

  699. They will

  700. not all be

  701. destroyed.

  702. You know,

  703. Jesus comes

  704. from this

  705. holy seed.

  706. He is the

  707. holy seed who

  708. is our

  709. hope.

  710. In Isaiah

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  711. chapter 11,

  712. which we will

  713. come on to in

  714. a few weeks

  715. time, it

  716. says a

  717. shoot will

  718. come up

  719. from the

  720. stump of

  721. Jesse.

  722. From his

  723. roots, a

  724. branch will

  725. bear fruit.

  726. The Lord

  727. Jesus is our

  728. hope.

  729. You know,

  730. to finish,

  731. like the

  732. astronauts who

  733. were changed

  734. by what they

  735. saw in

  736. space when

  737. they looked

  738. down, we

  739. are to be

  740. transformed by

  741. beholding the

  742. Lord and

  743. his majesty,

  744. his greatness,

  745. his awesomeness.

  746. We are to

  747. have this big

  748. view of God.

  749. We should

  750. keep in our

  751. minds, we

  752. should ponder

  753. on his

  754. greatness, on

  755. the glory of

  756. the Lord.

  757. This is to

  758. cause us to

  759. respond in

  760. confession of

  761. our unworthiness

  762. and cause us

  763. to respond in

  764. willing service

  765. to him.

  766. Jesus'

  767. sacrifice allows

  768. us to do

  769. so.

  770. Allows our

  771. sin to be

  772. atoned for

  773. by grace.

  774. It allows

  775. us to serve

  776. him.

  777. And we are

  778. to go and

  779. we are to

  780. do as God

  781. wants us to.

  782. And not just

  783. on our own

  784. terms, not

  785. what suits

  786. us, not

  787. what piques

  788. our interest.

  789. You know, our

  790. ministry will

  791. not always be

  792. fruitful, but

  793. we have our

  794. hope and are

  795. to remain

  796. faithful and

  797. do his work

  798. even in

  799. bleak, bleak

  800. times.

  801. When we

  802. truly see the

  803. Lord, we

  804. can't help but

  805. speak of him.

  806. I'm aware

  807. that I feel

  808. like I've

  809. just touched

  810. the surface

  811. of these

  812. verses and

  813. also of the

  814. glory of the

  815. Lord, but I

  816. really hope that

  817. this has piqued

  818. your interest

  819. and you want

  820. to go away

  821. and ponder

  822. on his

  823. greatness, on

  824. his glory.

  825. Let's pray

  826. for us as

  827. we finish.

  828. God and

  829. Father, we

  830. just thank you

  831. for your

  832. glory, your

  833. majesty, your

  834. awesomeness.

  835. Words just

  836. don't do it

  837. justice, but

  838. we just pray

  839. that as we

  840. think on these

  841. things as we

  842. go through

  843. this week,

  844. that we will

  845. respond in

  846. love to who

  847. you are and

  848. what you have

  849. done for us.

  850. Personal

  851. confession of

  852. our own

  853. unworthiness,

  854. our own

  855. position before

  856. you, and

  857. yet thankfulness

  858. in what the

  859. Lord Jesus

  860. has done, and

  861. that we will

  862. respond in

  863. love and do

  864. your work.

  865. Not that

  866. suits us,

  867. but what

  868. you would

  869. have us

  870. to do.

  871. We pray

  872. that we

  873. will be

  874. encouraged

  875. that it

  876. is you

  877. who save,

  878. that we

  879. are to

  880. faithfully

  881. witness and

  882. to speak

  883. your word,

  884. and yet

  885. you are

  886. the one

  887. who saves.

  888. Salvation

  889. is from

  890. the Lord.

  891. So we

  892. ask your

  893. blessing as

  894. we think

  895. on these

  896. things further.

  897. We pray

  898. that you

  899. will speak

  900. to us as

  901. we think

  902. on these

  903. things

  904. throughout

  905. this week

  906. and beyond.

  907. So we

  908. just pray

  909. all these

  910. things in

  911. Jesus'

  912. name.

  913. Amen.
