  1. Well, thank you so much, Al, and to everyone who's participated in our service thus far.

  2. Folks, great to have you with us this morning.

  3. Let me encourage you to have those verses in Ephesians chapter 5 and 6 open in front of you.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  4. And let me just begin by telling you about a mate that I had in halls at uni.

  5. His name is Dave.

  6. We call him Army Dave, right?

  7. Differentiate him from all the other Daves that were in the halls, right?

  8. We call him Army Dave.

  9. And you can probably guess from that what the defining feature of Dave's life was, right?

  10. He was almost a poster boy of the OTC, right?

  11. So the Officer's Training Corps, which is kind of like the student branch of the Army.

  12. Dave is a poster boy of the OTC, and Dave loved it, right?

  13. Loved it.

  14. If I remember being out one day playing football with my mates in the park,

  15. and seeing, spotting the OTC in another part of the park doing their thing.

  16. Now, I say I spotted them.

  17. Before I spotted them, I heard them.

  18. Heard them.

  19. I remember looking, and there was a man in the middle with a whistle, which was strange.

  20. But what was even more strange is that these people were doing exactly what he was telling them to do, right?

  21. He would say jump, and they'd jump.

  22. He would say march, and they'd march.

  23. He would say drop, and what was it?

  24. Give me 20, and down they'd go.

  25. And I remember looking at these guys, thinking to myself,

  26. wooft, that's pretty hardcore, isn't it?

  27. Here's the thing.

  28. To sign up to follow Jesus,

  29. to be his disciple,

  30. is to sign up for something way more hardcore than that.

  31. To be a disciple is to sign your entire life over to Christ calling the shots.

  32. And not just over part of your life,

  33. all of your life.

  34. And not just on one day of the week,

  35. but every day of the week.

  36. All of it.

  37. To have Christ call the shots.

  38. And that's true individually,

  39. and it's true corporately for the church.

  40. And for us as a local church,

  41. as local believers,

  42. called to, in our lives together,

  43. express and show

  44. the lordship of Jesus

  45. over every area of our lives.

  46. And we're going to see today,

  47. including those

  48. most personal of our relationships,

  49. that Jesus is king.

  50. Now, if you track back with me in the letter,

  51. to chapter 1, verse 10.

  52. This is kind of the theme sentence, if you like,

  53. that runs over the book of Ephesians.

  54. What God is doing in the world.

  55. His chapter 1, verse 10,

  56. his plan for the future,

  57. to unite everything in heaven and on earth,

  58. in Jesus Christ,

  59. and Jesus as his risen king,

  60. the plan is to have everything under his lordship.

  61. That's the plan for the fullness of time.

  62. It's where the future's going.

  63. And as the church today,

  64. the call for us

  65. is to be a community

  66. where in our relationships with one another,

  67. we submit to Jesus Christ

  68. as he rules us through his words.

  69. Have Christ call the shots

  70. in our community.

  71. And so with Army Dave

  72. and all his wee hardcore mates

  73. in your minds,

  74. come with me to verse 21 of chapter 5,

  75. which is the headline verse

  76. containing the headline verb

  77. of this whole little section.

  78. You ready for this?

  79. Come with me.

  80. Submitting to one another

  81. out of reverence for Christ.

  82. Now you catch that?

  83. What's the verb submitting?

  84. Right?

  85. And sometimes our headings in our Bibles,

  86. remember they're not inspired,

  87. the word is.

  88. Those headings are sometimes in the wrong place.

  89. This might be one of those examples

  90. where the divisions don't help us

  91. because that word submitting

  92. goes with the section just before.

  93. Now the Greek word there

  94. means to voluntarily put yourself

  95. under the control of another.

  96. Right?

  97. That's what it means to submit.

  98. And do you see how

  99. that is the fruit

  100. of being filled with the Spirit?

  101. Now do you see how

  102. it's the last of the four verbs

  103. at verse 18

  104. which Paul pulls out

  105. as being the hallmarks

  106. of a Spirit-filled community?

  107. Addressing one another

  108. in Psalms and hymns

  109. and spiritual songs.

  110. Here's number one.

  111. Addressing.

  112. Singing and making melody

  113. to the Lord with your heart

  114. is number two.

  115. Giving thanks.

  116. Here's number three

  117. and here's number four.

  118. Submitting to one another

  119. out of reverence for Christ.

  120. So to submit

  121. is to be somebody

  122. who is filled with the Spirit.

  123. I love that.

  124. It's not in ecstatic things.

  125. It's in the nitty-gritty details

  126. of your life.

  127. Filled with the Spirit.

  128. So to submit to Jesus

  129. is to allow Him

  130. to recalibrate

  131. how we think

  132. in terms of our relationships

  133. with one another.

  134. Right?

  135. So this is what

  136. we're going to see today.

  137. To have Jesus

  138. as the Lord of your life.

  139. To have Him

  140. calling the shots.

  141. He's going to call you

  142. to be a different kind of wife.

  143. And He's going to call you

  144. to be a different kind of husband.

  145. And a different kind of young person.

  146. And a different kind of parent.

  147. And a different kind of slave.

  148. And a different kind of master.

  149. Now remember,

  150. all these relationships

  151. are going on

  152. in the one church.

  153. But most likely,

  154. all of these relationships

  155. might be going on

  156. in the one home.

  157. And it's as if Jesus is,

  158. Paul is getting into picture,

  159. He's,

  160. Jesus is walking up

  161. to the door of your home.

  162. And He's ringing the doorbell.

  163. Ding dong, ding dong.

  164. And the call is to open the door

  165. and let Him walk into your family life.

  166. Walk into your home.

  167. Let Christ call the shots

  168. in your lives.

  169. Now,

  170. let me just deal with Dumbo.

  171. Okay?

  172. Who is the elephant

  173. in the room

  174. of this section.

  175. Right?

  176. Always good to deal with Dumbo.

  177. And to acknowledge

  178. that this couldn't be

  179. any more

  180. counter-cultural.

  181. You don't need me

  182. to tell you that.

  183. But we're just dealing with Dumbo.

  184. This couldn't be any more

  185. counter-cultural.

  186. In our day,

  187. this stuff about

  188. husbands and wives

  189. and family and work,

  190. it runs so deeply

  191. against the grain

  192. of how our society

  193. thinks and operates.

  194. But here's the thing

  195. that we need to appreciate.

  196. That what Paul writes here

  197. is equally as

  198. counter-cultural

  199. in his day.

  200. In fact,

  201. I would go so far

  202. as to say that

  203. this is revolutionary

  204. at the time of when

  205. he's writing.

  206. But we need to appreciate

  207. that the cultural

  208. pendulum,

  209. generally speaking,

  210. is on the other side.

  211. Right?

  212. To the one that we

  213. maybe find ourselves

  214. in today.

  215. So this Greco-Roman

  216. first century culture

  217. where this letter

  218. is written,

  219. the individuals

  220. who were considered

  221. lowest down

  222. the social ladder,

  223. women,

  224. children,

  225. and slaves.

  226. So notice with me

  227. who,

  228. when he addresses

  229. these three relationships,

  230. notice who he addresses

  231. first.

  232. Wives,

  233. children,

  234. and slaves.

  235. Do you see it?

  236. Do you see it?

  237. How counter-cultural

  238. that is.

  239. I've got

  240. lots of friends

  241. who've worked for

  242. big companies

  243. in their lives.

  244. Right?

  245. Kind of Amazons,

  246. your direct line

  247. call centers,

  248. that kind of thing.

  249. And what they always

  250. said to me

  251. at the time was,

  252. you know,

  253. when it comes to

  254. my work there,

  255. just a number.

  256. I'm just a number.

  257. No one's asking me.

  258. No one cares

  259. if I'm there.

  260. No one's looking

  261. at what I'm doing.

  262. I'm just kind of

  263. caught up

  264. in the collective.

  265. Right?

  266. Nobody cares.

  267. I love how

  268. Paul

  269. addresses

  270. wives,

  271. children,

  272. and slaves

  273. as individuals.

  274. Right?

  275. It's almost as if

  276. he was here,

  277. if he was walking

  278. around this church,

  279. these churches,

  280. he would be

  281. addressing them

  282. by name.

  283. Right?

  284. To you,

  285. this is what it says.

  286. To you,

  287. this is what this says.

  288. See what it's saying.

  289. But do you see

  290. how Paul is,

  291. in doing this,

  292. he's bestowing

  293. on these individuals

  294. a real counter-cultural

  295. dignity.

  296. And he's massaging

  297. home the truth

  298. that we saw

  299. earlier in this letter,

  300. that they are all

  301. part of Jesus'

  302. one body,

  303. and together

  304. in the way

  305. that they relate

  306. to one another,

  307. they are called

  308. to live in such

  309. a way that

  310. demonstrates to

  311. Ephesus

  312. that Jesus

  313. is Lord here.

  314. So,

  315. let's get into this,

  316. shall we?

  317. And first up,

  318. friends,

  319. we have got

  320. a Valentine's Day

  321. special.

  322. How about this?

  323. Look what he says,

  324. first of all.

  325. He goes for the marriage.

  326. See it?

  327. Let Christ call the shots

  328. in your marriage.

  329. Come with me

  330. to verse 32.

  331. I think this is key

  332. for us to see

  333. if we're to grasp

  334. what he's saying

  335. and we don't lapse

  336. into moralism.

  337. Okay?

  338. We need to see

  339. that as he talks

  340. and addresses

  341. and thinks about

  342. husbands and wives

  343. that Paul has got

  344. the ultimate

  345. marriage in mind.

  346. Okay?

  347. The marriage

  348. between Christ

  349. the groom

  350. and the church,

  351. his bride.

  352. Now,

  353. do you see that?

  354. It's not

  355. our marriages

  356. down here

  357. that the reality

  358. and that's a useful

  359. metaphor to call upon.

  360. It is completely

  361. the other way around.

  362. And this has always

  363. been God's

  364. created intention.

  365. I think that is

  366. why he quotes

  367. from Genesis 2 there.

  368. So,

  369. this is God's design.

  370. This is what it's

  371. been all about.

  372. About Christ

  373. and the church.

  374. There's a much bigger

  375. game that you're

  376. playing in.

  377. And so,

  378. the way husbands

  379. and wives,

  380. the way I'm praying,

  381. the way I want you

  382. to live,

  383. relate to one another,

  384. love one another,

  385. you have to do it

  386. in such a way

  387. that spotlights

  388. and showcases

  389. and reflects

  390. the ultimate marriage.

  391. The one that's

  392. eternal,

  393. the one that's

  394. permanent,

  395. the one that's

  396. glorious.

  397. And so,

  398. to the married

  399. woman in this

  400. church,

  401. he says,

  402. in the same way

  403. that the church

  404. submits to Christ,

  405. I urge you

  406. to reflect that

  407. by choosing

  408. to submit

  409. to your husband.

  410. Now,

  411. let me just clarify

  412. before we get on to

  413. what that does mean.

  414. Let me just clarify

  415. what it doesn't mean.

  416. Okay?

  417. It's good.

  418. Grandpa used to use

  419. this phrase,

  420. hee-haw,

  421. right?

  422. Meaning nothing.

  423. Hee-haw to do

  424. with a wife's

  425. inferiority,

  426. right?

  427. And you,

  428. the people have

  429. horribly abused this

  430. over the years.

  431. Nothing to do

  432. with that.

  433. And that's clear

  434. if you want an

  435. example of this.

  436. If you look at

  437. the life of Jesus,

  438. I love how he is

  439. almost the model

  440. for both the wife

  441. and the husband here.

  442. The one fully

  443. and equally with God,

  444. and yet what do we

  445. see him doing

  446. in John's Gospel

  447. in the Garden of

  448. Gethsemane?

  449. What are the words

  450. from his mouth?

  451. Not my will,

  452. Father,

  453. not my will,

  454. but yours be done.

  455. Submits himself

  456. to the will of his

  457. father.

  458. And equally,

  459. it's nothing to do

  460. with the husband's

  461. superiority,

  462. right?

  463. And Paul's going

  464. to make that

  465. crystal clear

  466. about what he says

  467. next.

  468. What this is,

  469. is husbands and

  470. wives both equally

  471. and wonderfully

  472. made in God's

  473. image and called

  474. to play their

  475. distinctive and

  476. complementary parts

  477. in showcasing

  478. the ultimate

  479. marriage.

  480. And so Paul says,

  481. this one does mean,

  482. I think,

  483. wives bring all

  484. your gifts and

  485. abilities that God

  486. has given you

  487. to your marriage.

  488. And in the same

  489. way that the church

  490. submits to Christ,

  491. I want you to

  492. choose to submit

  493. to affirm

  494. and support

  495. and encourage

  496. and look to

  497. and respect

  498. the loving

  499. and sacrificial

  500. leadership

  501. of your husbands.

  502. And I love this,

  503. it was Elizabeth

  504. Elliott who,

  505. I love this quote,

  506. right?

  507. She said,

  508. the fact that I'm

  509. a woman does

  510. not make me a

  511. different kind of

  512. Christian.

  513. But the fact that

  514. I'm a Christian,

  515. it does make me a

  516. different kind of

  517. woman.

  518. And Paul's calling

  519. Christian husbands

  520. to be equally as

  521. radical here.

  522. Okay?

  523. Husbands in this

  524. time,

  525. you read around in

  526. this,

  527. household codes of

  528. the day,

  529. husbands would

  530. never have expected

  531. to be addressed

  532. here.

  533. and certainly

  534. wouldn't have

  535. been asked,

  536. wouldn't have

  537. expected to be

  538. asked to do

  539. what Paul tells

  540. them to do.

  541. It's probably why

  542. they get a bit

  543. more air time

  544. in this section.

  545. Because husbands,

  546. the command,

  547. what he writes,

  548. is to love

  549. your wives.

  550. And it's in the

  551. same way that

  552. Christ

  553. sacrificially

  554. loved

  555. and shed

  556. his blood

  557. on the cross

  558. to win,

  559. to redeem,

  560. to buy for

  561. himself his

  562. bride.

  563. That's how

  564. you're to do

  565. it.

  566. Wow.

  567. Wow.

  568. And I take it

  569. if you're a

  570. husband listening

  571. in today,

  572. friends,

  573. all of us,

  574. we need to

  575. feel the beauty

  576. and the weight

  577. of what he

  578. calls us to

  579. do.

  580. Now,

  581. we don't have

  582. time to do

  583. justice to

  584. kind of every

  585. glorious detail

  586. and image there.

  587. You do that

  588. in your own

  589. time.

  590. But let me

  591. just pick out

  592. one.

  593. Okay?

  594. Verse 28 and

  595. 29.

  596. In the same

  597. way,

  598. husbands should

  599. love their

  600. wives as

  601. their own

  602. bodies.

  603. Flowing into

  604. verse 29.

  605. For no one

  606. ever hated

  607. his own

  608. flesh,

  609. but he

  610. nourishes

  611. it and

  612. cherishes

  613. it.

  614. Now,

  615. husbands,

  616. think about

  617. how you

  618. love your

  619. own body.

  620. Right?

  621. Doing it

  622. on the

  623. car on

  624. the way

  625. in today.

  626. Doing a

  627. wee health

  628. checklist of

  629. how I've

  630. got on

  631. over the

  632. last 24

  633. hours.

  634. Right?

  635. Good sleep?

  636. Tick.

  637. Hearty

  638. breakfast?

  639. Tick.

  640. Hair done?

  641. Tick.

  642. Teeth done?

  643. Tick.

  644. Banana just

  645. before I

  646. left for that

  647. little bit of

  648. added energy?

  649. Tick.

  650. Run this

  651. week?

  652. Tick.

  653. Tick,

  654. tick,

  655. tick,

  656. tick,

  657. tick.

  658. Friends,

  659. looking after my

  660. own body comes

  661. very naturally

  662. to me and I'm

  663. sure I'm not

  664. the only one.

  665. Paul says that's

  666. how a Christian

  667. husband should

  668. love his wife.

  669. Which means,

  670. friends,

  671. husbands,

  672. listen to this.

  673. We stop what

  674. we're doing and

  675. we sacrifice

  676. time to listen

  677. to our wives.

  678. We stop what

  679. we're doing,

  680. we listen well.

  681. We stop what

  682. we're doing,

  683. we go out of

  684. our way to

  685. encourage her.

  686. We go the

  687. extra mile to

  688. care for her

  689. and we make it

  690. our job to

  691. lead in such

  692. a way that

  693. we see her

  694. flourish in

  695. terms of being

  696. the person

  697. that God

  698. has made her

  699. to be.

  700. This is a call

  701. to sacrifice

  702. for the life

  703. of your wife.

  704. Husbands,

  705. love her like

  706. you do your

  707. own body.

  708. You know,

  709. I played a little

  710. game this week.

  711. It's called

  712. the Vanity

  713. Challenge.

  714. What I tried

  715. to do is every

  716. minute I spent

  717. looking in the

  718. mirror,

  719. I would try and

  720. spend a minute

  721. listening to

  722. and trying to

  723. act this out

  724. with Alex.

  725. And do you

  726. know what,

  727. friends?

  728. I failed

  729. miserably.

  730. Here is the

  731. call for the

  732. Christian husband

  733. to love

  734. your wife.

  735. And do you

  736. see how Paul

  737. is saying,

  738. husband and

  739. wife,

  740. as you do

  741. this together,

  742. you are

  743. displaying the

  744. ultimate

  745. marriage,

  746. the ultimate

  747. marriage.

  748. And it's so

  749. important that

  750. we've got that

  751. ultimate marriage

  752. in mind because

  753. if we look for

  754. satisfaction,

  755. whoever we are

  756. watching this

  757. today,

  758. we look for

  759. satisfaction in a

  760. marriage relationship,

  761. then we're in

  762. for a massive

  763. fall.

  764. Now, one of

  765. the most popular

  766. Christmas films of

  767. the last 20

  768. years, and some

  769. of you love

  770. this, it's

  771. called Love

  772. Actually,

  773. and it contains

  774. one of the

  775. most cheesy

  776. rom-com lines,

  777. and Hollywood

  778. loves it.

  779. And it's when the

  780. character played

  781. by Andrew

  782. Lincoln, some

  783. of you will

  784. know this scene,

  785. he's there,

  786. he's standing

  787. in the freezing

  788. cold, he's

  789. pretending to be

  790. a carol singer,

  791. he's at the

  792. door, and the

  793. character played

  794. by Keira Knightley

  795. is looking at

  796. him, and he's

  797. holding up signs,

  798. right?

  799. And one of the

  800. signs he holds

  801. up, and this is

  802. the scene, and it

  803. says, to me, you

  804. are perfect.

  805. There's the sign.

  806. Now, let me just

  807. give you five

  808. seconds to have a

  809. little moment

  810. thinking about that,

  811. and enjoying that,

  812. and then let me

  813. burst the bubble.

  814. Friends, do not

  815. buy the lie that

  816. any person can

  817. complete you.

  818. Okay, it's

  819. absolute nonsense.

  820. You know, I'm so

  821. conscious that for

  822. some of us watching

  823. this today, your

  824. experience of

  825. marriage will have

  826. been so painfully

  827. the opposite of

  828. what Paul outlines

  829. here.

  830. And maybe you're

  831. watching this, and

  832. maybe you're

  833. struggling in your

  834. marriage, or you're

  835. struggling thinking,

  836. will I ever be

  837. married?

  838. And do you know

  839. what?

  840. Perhaps lockdown

  841. has just brought

  842. all those things,

  843. all those feelings,

  844. to light again.

  845. But let me

  846. encourage us to

  847. see, as we think

  848. about that scene

  849. in Love Actually,

  850. that the role of

  851. the perfect spouse

  852. has already been

  853. taken.

  854. And newsflash,

  855. it ain't me,

  856. and it ain't you.

  857. Friends, we need

  858. to look to Jesus

  859. Christ.

  860. Whoever you are

  861. here today, if

  862. your trust is in

  863. him, would you

  864. know that you are

  865. in on, and will

  866. one day be gloriously

  867. and fully part

  868. of the ultimate

  869. marriage.

  870. And I love, this

  871. is one of the

  872. things that drew

  873. me to Jesus when

  874. I read about him

  875. in the gospel,

  876. for the first time

  877. when I was young,

  878. that I looked at

  879. him, not a romantic

  880. relationship in sight,

  881. right?

  882. It doesn't matter

  883. what the Da Vinci

  884. Code or the like

  885. says, nothing like

  886. that going on, and

  887. yet here is a man

  888. who is living life

  889. to the full.

  890. Here is a man who

  891. is full of joy as

  892. he basks in knowing

  893. the glory of his

  894. father.

  895. And it was C.T.

  896. Stud to encourage

  897. his wife to say a

  898. little poem to

  899. herself every day.

  900. Dear Lord Jesus,

  901. you are to me

  902. dearer than Charlie

  903. ever could be.

  904. You see, friends,

  905. let Christ call the

  906. shots in your

  907. marriage.

  908. And let him, and

  909. these last two

  910. points will be

  911. quicker, let him

  912. call the shots in

  913. your family.

  914. Right?

  915. Verse 1 of

  916. chapter 6, here is

  917. Paul's plea to the

  918. family children.

  919. He goes, first of

  920. all, again, thinking

  921. what we thought of

  922. earlier, children, and

  923. I think we're to

  924. picture children living

  925. at home and following

  926. Jesus for themselves.

  927. What does he say?

  928. He says, obey your

  929. parents.

  930. And he roots it in

  931. the fifth commandment

  932. as a way of life that

  933. he has orchestrated,

  934. which will see them

  935. flourish and please

  936. us as the Lord.

  937. So young people, if

  938. you're watching this,

  939. know that you can

  940. worship Jesus, you can

  941. honor him simply by

  942. the way that you

  943. love and you obey

  944. your parents.

  945. Isn't that amazing?

  946. You can do that

  947. whoever you are.

  948. And fathers, verse

  949. 4, I take it speaking

  950. to them as the one

  951. that he wants to

  952. take the sacrificial

  953. and loving lead in

  954. the home because if

  955. you read around in

  956. this one, men in

  957. this culture have a

  958. habit of being

  959. domineering.

  960. Paul says, do not

  961. provoke your

  962. children or

  963. discourage them

  964. because you've put

  965. heavy burdens and

  966. expectations on them.

  967. But rather encourage

  968. and love and

  969. nurture and

  970. instruct and

  971. pray for and

  972. invest in and

  973. get to know

  974. your children.

  975. And the challenge

  976. is, parents

  977. watching this

  978. today, do we

  979. love our children

  980. like this?

  981. I'll tell you the

  982. little challenge in

  983. my heart over the

  984. last season.

  985. And it's to do with

  986. the comparison game.

  987. You know, I don't

  988. know who started

  989. these things, but

  990. you know how every

  991. year you get those

  992. family newsletters

  993. through the post or

  994. you get them online.

  995. I love reading all

  996. of them, but you

  997. read some of them

  998. and you think to

  999. yourself, that is

  1000. just a brag about

  1001. your children.

  1002. Right?

  1003. You know the kind

  1004. of thing.

  1005. Julie's doing

  1006. classics at

  1007. Cambridge and Mark

  1008. has been made

  1009. captain of the

  1010. football team and

  1011. baby Dave spoke

  1012. his first word last

  1013. month and that word

  1014. had 16 syllables in

  1015. it.

  1016. You know that kind

  1017. of thing.

  1018. And I find my

  1019. heart can be so

  1020. easily dragged away

  1021. from my primary

  1022. calling as a

  1023. Christian parent.

  1024. Then all of a

  1025. sudden my little

  1026. girl goes to play

  1027. her first ever

  1028. tennis lesson and

  1029. in my head I'm

  1030. thinking her first

  1031. shot, why is she

  1032. not Serena

  1033. Williams?

  1034. Come on!

  1035. How my heart can

  1036. get dragged away

  1037. from something as

  1038. simple as a photo

  1039. on Facebook.

  1040. Do you see the

  1041. call here,

  1042. friends, as

  1043. Christian parents

  1044. that our primary

  1045. objective, our

  1046. primary desire for

  1047. our children should

  1048. be that they come

  1049. to know Jesus,

  1050. that they love

  1051. him, that they

  1052. know him.

  1053. And flowing from

1054. that, my job as a

  1055. parent is to put

  1056. all the Jesus

  1057. shaped kindling

  1058. around the fire

  1059. that I can of

  1060. their hearts and

  1061. live out in front

  1062. of them a vibrant

  1063. love for and need

  1064. for the Lord

  1065. Jesus saying sorry

  1066. to my children when

  1067. I've got it wrong

  1068. and praying that

  1069. the Holy Spirit

  1070. would take the

  1071. kindling around the

  1072. fire and

  1073. ignite it.

  1074. That's our desire

  1075. for our children.

  1076. You know, I love

  1077. John Wesley who

  1078. famously said about

  1079. his mum,

  1080. Susanna,

  1081. he said about her

  1082. looking back on his

  1083. life that he

  1084. meant he learned

  1085. more about

  1086. Christianity from

  1087. her than he did

  1088. from all the

  1089. theologians in

  1090. England.

  1091. Let Christ call

  1092. the shots in your

  1093. family.

  1094. And lastly, let

  1095. Christ call the

  1096. shots in your

  1097. work.

  1098. As you see in

  1099. verse 5, he

  1100. speaks to slaves.

  1101. And you can

  1102. understand that

  1103. that's kind of a

  1104. broad term that's

  1105. describing, can

  1106. describe any person

  1107. who's under the

  1108. authority of

  1109. another.

  1110. And I guess in

  1111. this culture it's

  1112. important for us

  1113. maybe to discern

  1114. that this is a

  1115. different thing

  1116. from what we'd

  1117. imagine and we

  1118. see in scenes like

  1119. 12 years a slave

  1120. or Selma.

  1121. it's a different

  1122. thing.

  1123. You've got a

  1124. whole economy

  1125. here built on

  1126. the kind of

  1127. master-slave

  1128. relationship.

  1129. You have up

  1130. to, it's

  1131. estimated up

  1132. to two-thirds

  1133. of a Roman

  1134. empire were

  1135. slaves.

  1136. And slaves

  1137. could be well

  1138. educated professionals

  1139. that could be

  1140. trained individuals.

  1141. You've bankers

  1142. are slaves.

  1143. You've got

  1144. doctors who

  1145. are slaves.

  1146. So though it's

  1147. not identical,

  1148. I think we can

  1149. draw a lot of

  1150. parallels to our

  1151. employee-employer

  1152. relationships that

  1153. we have today.

  1154. And look what he

  1155. writes to slaves

  1156. and see that this

  1157. is a heart thing.

  1158. It's a heart thing.

  1159. Verse 5, what does

  1160. he write?

  1161. He says, obey.

  1162. Obey your

  1163. masters.

  1164. Work well.

  1165. Be known for

  1166. your reliability.

  1167. Be known for

  1168. your integrity.

  1169. Be known for

  1170. your diligence.

  1171. And his

  1172. wording, gain a

  1173. good reputation

  1174. in the eyes of

  1175. your master.

  1176. Be working,

  1177. not just when

  1178. they are watching,

  1179. but be working

  1180. all the time.

  1181. All the time.

  1182. And if you do

  1183. this, you're

  1184. going to show

  1185. to the world

  1186. that you serve

  1187. a greater

  1188. master, Christ,

  1189. who has claimed

  1190. you and

  1191. changed you.

  1192. Knowing that

  1193. from him you

  1194. will receive

  1195. the ultimate

  1196. inheritance when

  1197. he comes back.

  1198. A question to

  1199. ask at this

  1200. point, isn't

  1201. it, is,

  1202. friends, if we

  1203. think about

  1204. our jobs,

  1205. what it is we

  1206. do with our

  1207. lives, those

  1208. kind of employee-employer

  1209. relationships,

  1210. wherever you

  1211. happen to

  1212. fall in that.

  1213. Do people at

  1214. work know and

  1215. do they see it

  1216. in us that we

  1217. serve a higher

  1218. master?

  1219. You know, I

  1220. love, I was

  1221. reading with my

  1222. kids the other

  1223. day about

  1224. Johann Sebastian

  1225. Bach and how

  1226. he signed off

  1227. every bit of

  1228. music that he

  1229. wrote with the

  1230. letters SDG,

  1231. sold the

  1232. Gloria, to

  1233. God be the

  1234. glory.

  1235. That's why he

  1236. was working,

  1237. not for pay,

  1238. not for the

  1239. plaudits, he

  1240. was writing,

  1241. composing for

  1242. the glory of

  1243. God.

  1244. Take that with

  1245. you this week,

  1246. SDG, SDG.

  1247. Right, as you

  1248. send that email

  1249. that nobody will

  1250. see, SDG.

  1251. Right, as you're

  1252. in the hospital,

  1253. SDG, you know,

  1254. all these things,

  1255. to God be the

  1256. glory.

  1257. Christ has

  1258. changed how you

  1259. understand what

  1260. you do in your

  1261. work.

  1262. Right, into

  1263. masters, he

  1264. says, verse 9,

  1265. he says, remember

  1266. that Christ is

  1267. your master

  1268. too, and you

  1269. need to treat

  1270. your slaves

  1271. well.

  1272. You know, I

  1273. love it, back

  1274. in 2015, the

  1275. online magazine

  1276. 24-7 Wall

  1277. Street, it

  1278. published a

  1279. list of the

  1280. top ten

  1281. companies in

  1282. America to

  1283. work for, and

  1284. the only

  1285. restaurant that

  1286. made it in

  1287. there was

  1288. Chick-fil-A.

  1289. Right, many of

  1290. you might know

  1291. that that's a

  1292. restaurant run

  1293. by evangelical

  1294. Christians, and

  1295. they've got a

  1296. reputation for

  1297. paying well for

  1298. listening to

  1299. what their

  1300. employees are

  1301. saying, to

  1302. have a bit

  1303. of flexibility

  1304. in terms of

  1305. work-life

  1306. balance, and

  1307. because of

  1308. that, people

  1309. love working

  1310. there.

  1311. They love

  1312. working there.

  1313. So, friends,

  1314. let Christ

  1315. call the

  1316. shots in

  1317. your work.

  1318. And how

  1319. different,

  1320. friends, this

  1321. community then

  1322. that Paul is

  1323. describing, how

  1324. different then

  1325. it's going to

  1326. look to the

  1327. watching world.

  1328. This is a

  1329. place where

  1330. Jesus rules,

  1331. and this is

  1332. a place where

  1333. he is transforming

  1334. our relationships

  1335. and the whole

  1336. goal of our

  1337. relationships is

  1338. to glorify him.

  1339. Just as we

  1340. close, let me

  1341. just give you

  1342. two thoughts

  1343. that have been

  1344. in my mind as

  1345. I've been

  1346. praying about

  1347. this this

  1348. week.

  1349. Two thoughts

  1350. for you, and

  1351. I'll give you

  1352. two song lyrics

  1353. as well.

  1354. Here's thought

  1355. number one,

  1356. and song

  1357. number one.

  1358. It's a song

  1359. that I used to

  1360. listen to a lot

  1361. when I was

  1362. growing up.

  1363. My dad used

  1364. to love it on

  1365. the radio,

  1366. and it was

  1367. called

  1368. Oolalab

  1369. of the

  1370. Faces.

  1371. Some of you

  1372. won't have a

  1373. clue what I'm

  1374. talking about,

  1375. some of you

  1376. will love it.

  1377. You can Google

  1378. it afterwards.

  1379. The chorus

  1380. went, I wish

  1381. that I knew

  1382. what I know

  1383. now when I

  1384. was younger.

  1385. I wish

  1386. that I knew

  1387. what I know

  1388. now when I

  1389. was younger.

  1390. Here's what I

  1391. know now.

  1392. Having done

  1393. this work

  1394. thing, marriage

  1395. thing, parenting

  1396. thing for a

  1397. little season

  1398. of my life

  1399. now, nothing

  1400. has revealed

  1401. my own sinful

  1402. heart and

  1403. my need

  1404. for God's

  1405. gracious

  1406. help, quite

  1407. like marriage,

  1408. parenthood,

  1409. and work.

  1410. I take it,

  1411. friends, all

  1412. of us are

  1413. going to respond

  1414. to this like

  1415. that, just

  1416. feeling, wow,

  1417. as we look

  1418. at this.

  1419. This isn't

  1420. easy.

  1421. The question

  1422. that you're

  1423. probably asking

  1424. is how do

  1425. we do this?

  1426. The answer

  1427. here is not

  1428. to roll up

  1429. our sleeves.

  1430. That might

  1431. work for a

  1432. day or two,

  1433. but it's

  1434. certainly not

  1435. going to

  1436. last long.

  1437. It's not

  1438. going to

  1439. result in

  1440. transformative

  1441. change.

  1442. The answer

  1443. is not

  1444. to roll

  1445. up our

  1446. sleeves.

  1447. The answer

  1448. is to get

  1449. on our

  1450. knees.

  1451. And remember

  1452. that this

  1453. word submitting

  1454. is the work

  1455. of the Holy

  1456. Spirit in

  1457. our lives.

  1458. This is the

  1459. fruit of

  1460. his work.

  1461. God's

  1462. God's

  1463. children.

  1464. The Spirit

  1465. who is

  1466. called the

  1467. helper.

  1468. Friends, I

  1469. take it if we

  1470. want to see

  1471. light in

  1472. our marriages,

  1473. in our

  1474. families,

  1475. in our

  1476. work, we

  1477. see the

  1478. light as we

  1479. come closer

  1480. to the

  1481. flame of

  1482. Jesus

  1483. Christ.

  1484. He's given

  1485. us the

  1486. Holy Spirit

  1487. and he's

  1488. given us

  1489. one another

  1490. to help.

  1491. friends, if

  1492. you've got

  1493. questions about

  1494. anything that's

  1495. been said this

  1496. morning or

  1497. anything that

  1498. you've read,

  1499. get in touch.

  1500. As a community

  1501. we do this

  1502. together.

  1503. We help one

  1504. another and it

  1505. would be our

  1506. joy to be able

  1507. to do that.

  1508. Here's the

  1509. second thought

  1510. then and with

  1511. this we close.

  1512. And I want to

  1513. take you back

  1514. to Army Dave.

  1515. Remember Army

  1516. Dave and his

  1517. OTC buddies?

  1518. The thing that

  1519. struck me about

  1520. Army Dave

  1521. every time I saw

  1522. him was that

  1523. he loved the

  1524. OTC.

  1525. And I mean

  1526. loved the

  1527. OTC.

  1528. Friends, as we

  1529. see this, as we

  1530. think about

  1531. Christ as our

  1532. master, as we

  1533. think about

  1534. submitting and

  1535. letting his

  1536. word rule over

  1537. us, I want

  1538. to remind us

  1539. just at the

  1540. close of the

  1541. goodness of

  1542. this.

  1543. And to see

  1544. the goodness

  1545. in this.

  1546. But then to

  1547. see beyond

  1548. that and see

  1549. the beauty

  1550. of the

  1551. Christ who

  1552. is our

  1553. master.

  1554. And here's

  1555. the second

  1556. lyrics and

  1557. with this we

  1558. close.

  1559. There's joy in

  1560. serving Jesus.

  1561. The words of

  1562. the old hymn,

  1563. as I journey

  1564. on my way,

  1565. joy that

  1566. fills my

  1567. heart with

  1568. praises every

  1569. hour and

  1570. every day.

  1571. There is

  1572. joy, joy,

  1573. joy in

  1574. serving Jesus.

  1575. Joy that

  1576. throbs within

  1577. my heart every

  1578. moment, every

  1579. hour as I

  1580. draw upon his

  1581. power.

  1582. There is

  1583. joy, joy,

  1584. joy that

  1585. shall never

  1586. depart.

  1587. Friends, there

  1588. is joy in

  1589. serving Jesus.

  1590. Let me pray

  1591. as we close.

  1592. Oh, Heavenly

  1593. Father, all of

  1594. us here will

  1595. feel the weight

  1596. of what we've

  1597. read this

  1598. morning.

  1599. We'll see

  1600. both its

  1601. glory and

  1602. its weight.

  1603. And so,

  1604. Father, I pray

  1605. for whoever is

  1606. watching this and

  1607. whatever is

  1608. going on in

  1609. their lives.

  1610. Some of the

  1611. questions and

  1612. some of the

  1613. pains that

  1614. will be wrapped

  1615. up in all of

  1616. this stuff.

  1617. Father, I pray

  1618. that your spirit

  1619. would be at

  1620. work in each

  1621. of our hearts

  1622. and in each

  1623. of our

  1624. situations.

  1625. Lord, that you

  1626. would help us

  1627. submit our

  1628. lives to the

  1629. lordship of

  1630. Jesus.

  1631. And we thank

  1632. you, Father,

  1633. that there is

  1634. none like him.

  1635. And so,

  1636. Father, we pray

  1637. for your help

  1638. this week as

  1639. we seek to

  1640. put this into

  1641. action.

  1642. In Jesus'

  1643. precious name

  1644. we pray.

  1645. Amen.
