  1. Good evening, Brunsfield. I hope you're all keeping well and continue to survive this period of our pandemic and lockdown.

  2. It's a great privilege to be with you this evening and also a great privilege to be joining you in your series in the book of Isaiah.

  3. For what a wonderful book that is, Isaiah, full of prophecies to do with our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  4. Prophecies that truly build our faith.

  5. But if we're very honest, Isaiah is also often a book that gets picked over a little, where we jump from nice passage to nice passage.

  6. So it is good for us this evening to look perhaps to a passage that is maybe not as well known.

  7. Certainly a passage that is a dark and sad chapter in this whole book of Isaiah.

  8. We're told at the beginning of our passage in verse 89 that this is a prophecy concerning the northern kingdom.

  9. Even though Isaiah's main ministry is to the south, he does address things to do with the northern kingdom,

  10. partly so that the south may respond accordingly to the warnings that are spoken to the northern kingdom.

  11. We know this because Samaria would have been the capital city of the northern kingdom,

  12. and Ephraim and Manasseh would have been the two largest tribes.

  13. Also, our prophecy, or our section, continues.

  14. The prophecy already started in chapter 8, verse 19 and following.

  15. So I think you looked at that last week.

  16. Our section very handily falls into four parts.

  17. It's a poem.

  18. And every time, every section finishes with these incredibly powerful words,

  19. where God says through Isaiah his prophet,

  20. For all this, his anger has not turned away.

  21. His hand is outstretched still.

  22. We find this in verse 12, verse 17, verse 21, and also in chapter 10, verse 4.

  23. So the first thing we really need to consider this evening is the reality of God's anger expressed in these words.

  24. For all this, his anger has not turned away.

  25. Now, anger is a tricky thing, is it not?

  26. I grew up being told that to be angry is always wrong, bad.

  27. For anger, as Ed Welch puts it so beautifully,

  28. specializes in indicting others,

  29. but is unskilled at both self-indictment and love.

  30. So it's true that certainly human anger is broken and easily self-serving.

  31. And yet the Bible is clear that, yes, on the one hand,

  32. we need to watch ourselves when it comes to anger and be self-controlled.

  33. Yet we're not to repress it either.

  34. And my personal experience with anger is one that I've wrestled with anger,

  35. particularly when I was younger,

  36. in a way that my anger would be best described as nearly uncontrollable temper

  37. or that rage or, you know, the red flag to the bull,

  38. ready to hurt someone.

  39. This particularly came out on the sports field,

  40. where I did find it hard sometimes not to have a go at my opposite player.

  41. I guess the good news is, and praise be to God,

  42. that he has been at work in me

  43. and that the fruit of his spirit has become more evident in my life since then.

  44. But that's human anger.

  45. God's anger is different.

  46. God's anger is a good anger,

  47. a righteous, sinless indignation,

  48. a holy wrath.

  49. And it's an anger against the crimes committed against him.

  50. These crimes deserve to be punished.

  51. God has made this clear from the very beginning.

  52. So for some who think that the Old Testament always speaks of a God of anger

  53. and the New Testament, great, it's about a God of love.

  54. Actually, this is not true.

  55. For as much as in Genesis,

  56. as well as the Gospels and the Epistles like Romans,

  57. it is very clear that the anger of God is a reality.

  58. But we're also told that God's anger is not only a righteous anger

  59. and a good anger, but also a slow anger.

  60. I guess an obvious question to ask when we come to this passage in Isaiah,

  61. how do we get here?

  62. What has happened so far?

  63. Well, in many ways, what happened is that God

  64. in his generous, amazing love

  65. chose to create this earth and this world and us in it.

  66. For him to share what he has enjoyed for all eternity with mankind.

  67. His love even went so far as to call

  68. and to choose a particular individual called Abraham.

  69. And for Abraham to be invited into this life with God,

  70. which would be filled with blessing, blessing of offspring, blessing of land.

  71. And God even went as far as securing those promises

  72. in a loving covenant with Abraham.

  73. And then we find that when Abraham's descendants end up in Egypt,

  74. which sounds like a nice holiday destination,

  75. but in those days ended him in and subjected to slavery,

  76. God rescues his people.

  77. Again, incredible love.

  78. Again, a powerful display of what his covenantal love looks like.

  79. But sadly, despite the fact that God's people were loved,

  80. were rescued, were protected,

  81. time and time again throughout history,

  82. mankind chooses to walk away,

  83. to rebel, to complain,

  84. even to defy God's wisdom.

  85. We see that as soon as they've come out of Egypt,

  86. the people of God complain.

  87. We see it particularly in the time of the judges,

  88. where people continuously,

  89. from generation to generation,

  90. chose what was right in their own eyes.

  91. And we see it again in the times of the kings.

  92. And really, there's perhaps only one good king,

  93. King David,

  94. and maybe a little bit of Solomon when he started off well.

  95. But after that,

  96. and particularly when the kingdom split to the north and the south,

  97. it seems a downward spiral,

  98. including the current king of the north,

  99. King Ahaz,

  100. who even sacrificed his own son

  101. in the religion,

  102. and to be like the nations around them.

  103. And so when you reflect on the whole time,

  104. from creation up till now,

  105. we see a God who is patient,

  106. who is indeed very slow to anger,

  107. very patient indeed,

  108. giving his people chance after chance after chance

  109. for nearly 1,300 years have elapsed

  110. after God's promise to Abraham

  111. by the time Isaiah proclaims this message

  112. that we read today.

  113. So let it be clear that God is rightly angry,

  114. even after all,

  115. and especially after all this time,

  116. and that his anger is a good anger,

  117. for it is part of his love,

  118. not the opposite of.

  119. It is part of his love for his creation

  120. to reign with justice.

  121. The Bible is very clear that God hates sin

  122. for its opposite of everything that he is himself,

  123. and therefore he will not choose to ignore sin.

  124. Now sometimes that seems very harsh,

  125. but if you've ever been the victim

  126. of any type of injustice,

  127. however small or big that may be,

  128. it is truly good news that there will be a day

  129. in which justice will truly reign.

  130. Justice will one day set everything right,

  131. and actually one day there will be no more sin

  132. in the world that we will share for eternity

  133. with our God.

  134. And so we find that one day God's generous love

  135. will actually do all these things for his people.

  136. Now again, sometimes we think that really what we want

  137. is a God who only loves,

  138. in the idea of never being angry with us.

  139. But that's like imagining a family

  140. in which parents never become angry

  141. and only love their children,

  142. and we can only guess the result.

  143. We would have to spoil children,

  144. maybe even neglected children.

  145. For loving parents,

  146. at times,

  147. because of their love,

  148. will be angry.

  149. And so God's love likewise

  150. is so great

  151. that he won't hold back

  152. discipline

  153. which he knows

  154. would bring about

  155. good in our lives.

  156. So God's anger is real.

  157. God's anger is good.

  158. God's anger is slow,

  159. but it is also

  160. incredibly frightening.

  161. As verse 14 and 15

  162. tell us, for example,

  163. that the Lord

  164. here

  165. speaks his anger

  166. as saying

  167. he will cut off from Israel

  168. head and tail,

  169. palm branch,

  170. and reed

  171. in one day.

  172. With these words,

  173. he's dealing with Israel's leaders

  174. and also with God's spokespeople,

  175. the prophets.

  176. And his anger

  177. will very much

  178. make these

  179. give account

  180. for what they have done

  181. with the responsibility

  182. given to them.

  183. they will be dealt

  184. accordingly.

  185. For these were people

  186. who had not only

  187. neglected their responsibility,

  188. but actually

  189. had abused it

  190. and led the people

  191. under their care

  192. astray.

  193. And the picture

  194. of the branch

  195. and reed

  196. gives us

  197. even a picture

  198. of totality

  199. that actually

  200. God will deal

  201. with the most eminent

  202. to the most lowly.

  203. Actually,

  204. in many ways,

  205. in verse 17,

  206. it gives us

  207. a picture

  208. of what is

  209. perhaps the most

  210. frightening thing

  211. of what God

  212. will do in his anger.

  213. Not only keeping

  214. us to account,

  215. but it also tells us

  216. that God's joy

  217. and compassion

  218. will be withdrawn.

  219. Indeed,

  220. actually,

  221. the most frightening

  222. part of God's anger

  223. is when

  224. he withdraws

  225. and leaves us

  226. to the consequences

  227. of our choices.

  228. And that is

  229. exactly the picture

  230. that we see

  231. in verse 18

  232. and following

  233. where it reads

  234. that wickedness

  235. burns like a fire.

  236. It consumes

  237. briars

  238. and thorns.

  239. It kindles

  240. the thickets

  241. of the forest

  242. and they roll upwards

  243. in a column of smoke.

  244. And through the wrath

  245. of the Lord

  246. of hosts,

  247. the land is scorched

  248. and the people

  249. are like fuel

  250. for the fire.

  251. No one

  252. spares

  253. another.

  254. Wickedness

  255. burns

  256. like fire.

  257. Do you remember

  258. that song,

  259. It Only Takes

  260. a spark?

  261. Well,

  262. that's the same

  263. of evil.

  264. Spreads

  265. like wildfire.

  266. And when it says

  267. that by the wrath

  268. of Jehovah

  269. of hosts

  270. the land is scorched,

  271. it means that actually

  272. the wrath of God

  273. allows it to happen,

  274. but it's clear

  275. that that's not

  276. the fuel

  277. that makes it happen.

  278. And the end result

  279. when God

  280. lets go

  281. and lets the people

  282. fall into the consequences

  283. of their own choices

  284. is ultimate civil war

  285. where we find

  286. that the people

  287. from the north

  288. turn against

  289. their fellow brother

  290. down south

  291. in Judah.

  292. Wow.

  293. So God's anger

  294. is slow,

  295. God's anger

  296. is real,

  297. and it certainly

  298. is frightening.

  299. So let's move on

  300. to the next thing

  301. that we ought to see

  302. from this passage.

  303. Secondly,

  304. let us see

  305. what causes God

  306. to be angry.

  307. So we've looked

  308. at the reality

  309. of God's anger.

  310. Now let's see

  311. what causes

  312. Him to be angry.

  313. Look with me

  314. to verse 17.

  315. Verse 17 tells us,

  316. For everyone

  317. is godless

  318. and an evildoer,

  319. and every mouth

  320. speaks folly.

  321. I want us to note

  322. how wrath

  323. is not being inflicted

  324. without the reasons

  325. for wrath

  326. being made clear.

  327. There's grace

  328. right there.

  329. So God's wrath

  330. is not being inflicted

  331. without the reasons

  332. of wrath

  333. being made clear.

  334. Well,

  335. what are these reasons?

  336. Well,

  337. in verse 17,

  338. it speaks of the godless.

  339. And the godless,

  340. this word refers

  341. to apostasy.

  342. So people who

  343. walk away

  344. from God.

  345. Or perhaps

  346. it can cover

  347. those who

  348. bring upon

  349. themselves

  350. defilement

  351. through disobedience.

  352. And evildoers,

  353. well,

  354. evildoers in the Bible

  355. refer to those

  356. who break

  357. the moral law,

  358. who violate

  359. the moral law.

  360. So both these terms

  361. actually cover

  362. not only the whole

  363. of the Ten Commandments,

  364. but the whole

  365. of God's will.

  366. That it's those

  367. who have stopped

  368. loving the Lord

  369. their God

  370. with all their heart,

  371. mind,

  372. and strength,

  373. and soul,

  374. and also those

  375. who do not love

  376. their neighbor

  377. as their self,

  378. the two greatest

  379. commandments

  380. as Jesus

  381. had taught us.

  382. Now it's interesting

  383. that in Scripture

  384. evil

  385. is not

  386. just the very bad,

  387. but actually

  388. describes all

  389. who sin.

  390. It's very clear

  391. that when we're not

  392. children of God,

  393. we are enemies

  394. of God.

  395. And this strong language

  396. which we often

  397. struggle with,

  398. for we often

  399. compare ourselves

  400. to others

  401. and think actually

  402. I'm not that bad.

  403. But this strong language

  404. which we naturally

  405. associate with

  406. the greatest wickedness

  407. and darkness

  408. out there

  409. reveals to us

  410. God's perspective

  411. on sin

  412. which often

  413. isn't ours.

  414. Anything

  415. other than God

  416. is darkness.

  417. All aspects

  418. astray from God

  419. is the opposite

  420. of light.

  421. this is backed up

  422. by the use

  423. of Isaiah's

  424. phrase there

  425. of the mouth

  426. and folly.

  427. The word folly

  428. comes up a lot

  429. in wisdom literature,

  430. for example,

  431. in Proverbs.

  432. And you'll find

  433. that folly

  434. doesn't mean

  435. silly or foolish

  436. or funny.

  437. Actually,

  438. folly

  439. is very much

  440. in the meaning

  441. of all people

  442. who choose

  443. to live

  444. life

  445. without God.

  446. those people

  447. are

  448. the people

  449. who are

  450. the folly

  451. in the Bible.

  452. Now,

  453. that's not the only reason.

  454. We also find

  455. in verse 10

  456. that perhaps

  457. the cause

  458. of all of this

  459. is pride

  460. and arrogance.

  461. We read there

  462. that they say

  463. in their pride

  464. and arrogance

  465. of heart

  466. meaning great

  467. arrogance

  468. that the bricks

  469. have fallen

  470. but we will build

  471. with dressed stones

  472. and the sycamores

  473. have been cut down

  474. but we will put

  475. cedars

  476. in their place.

  477. Their pride

  478. was what I would

  479. call a defiant

  480. pride.

  481. It's as if they're

  482. saying

  483. peace,

  484. peace

  485. when there is

  486. no peace.

  487. They're fixing it

  488. rather than

  489. listening to

  490. God

  491. and paying attention

  492. to his warnings.

  493. It's as if

  494. they're saying

  495. well disaster

  496. has come upon us

  497. but we will sort it

  498. and we will rebuild

  499. even better

  500. than what it was.

  501. this is not only

  502. defiant

  503. arrogance

  504. and pride

  505. it is dangerous

  506. and it is blind

  507. even stubborn

  508. self-confidence.

  509. We especially

  510. probably see this

  511. this pride

  512. in their whole

  513. empty religion

  514. already addressed

  515. by the prophet Isaiah

  516. and by God

  517. through him.

  518. In the opening chapters

  519. we get this picture

  520. that in that time

  521. perhaps Israel

  522. and the people

  523. of God

  524. were busier

  525. than ever

  526. visiting the temple

  527. bringing all their

  528. sacrifices

  529. doing all the

  530. right things

  531. and yet with a heart

  532. that was far

  533. from God

  534. empty religion

  535. fueled

  536. and an expression

  537. of this arrogant

  538. pride.

  539. But on top

  540. of all of this

  541. we then read

  542. in verse 13

  543. that there is

  544. no repentance.

  545. So

  546. everyone is

  547. evildoers

  548. everyone is

  549. godless

  550. they're all

  551. full of pride

  552. and arrogance

  553. but then there's

  554. no repentance

  555. the people did not

  556. turn to him

  557. who struck them

  558. nor inquire

  559. of the lord

  560. of hosts.

  561. Surely a result

  562. of their pride

  563. but also revealing

  564. just how

  565. conscious

  566. their decision

  567. is

  568. to not only

  569. ignore God's

  570. message

  571. but to ignore

  572. God himself

  573. while pretending

  574. that all

  575. is

  576. well.

  577. That's the situation

  578. that Isaiah

  579. speaks

  580. into.

  581. But I guess

  582. before we

  583. tut-tut the

  584. northern kingdom

  585. and point our

  586. finger and say

  587. how bad they are

  588. we do well

  589. to remember

  590. perhaps Paul's

  591. words in Romans

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  592. chapter 3

  593. or just simply

  594. look at our

  595. own lives

  596. and think

  597. we may pretend

  598. that all

  599. things are

  600. well

  601. but we also

  602. fall short

  603. of the glory

  604. of God.

  605. How many of us

  606. do not struggle

  607. with pride

  608. with arrogance

  609. with actually

  610. saying

  611. maybe perhaps

  612. not in such

  613. words

  614. but even in

  615. our actions

  616. that we know

  617. better

  618. than God

  619. in particular

  620. areas

  621. in our lives.

  622. It is certainly

  623. a scary thing

  624. that even

  625. many serious

  626. Christians

  627. can fall

  628. into a

  629. practical

  630. atheism

  631. maybe proclaiming

  632. God with

  633. their mouth

  634. but denying

  635. him with

  636. their actions.

  637. I certainly

  638. find Proverbs

    Proverbs 3:5

  639. chapter 3

  640. verse 5

  641. one that can

  642. be very

  643. challenging

  644. to put into

  645. practice

  646. where we're

  647. called to

  648. trust in the

  649. Lord with

  650. all our

  651. heart

  652. and not to

  653. lean on

  654. our own

  655. understanding.

  656. How often

  657. do we not

  658. do the

  659. opposite?

  660. And if we're

  661. still not

  662. convinced that

  663. we're no

  664. better than

  665. the northern

  666. kingdom

  667. what about

  668. those greatest

  669. commandments?

  670. Do we truly

  671. love God

  672. with all our

  673. heart,

  674. mind,

  675. soul and

  676. strength?

  677. And do we

  678. love our

  679. neighbor as

  680. ourself

  681. the way that

  682. Christ loved

  683. his father

  684. and loved

  685. us

  686. dying on

  687. the cross

  688. for us?

  689. So people

  690. actually

  691. not only is

  692. God's anger

  693. a reality

  694. not only is

  695. God rightly

  696. angry

  697. with the

  698. northern

  699. kingdom

  700. with his

  701. own people

  702. but God

  703. is rightly

  704. angry

  705. even with

  706. us.

  707. But thirdly

  708. let us then

  709. understand how

  710. Israel could

  711. have known

  712. that God

  713. was angry.

  714. How could

  715. Israel have

  716. known?

  717. Because you

  718. may say

  719. well the

  720. anger may

  721. have been

  722. there,

  723. may have

  724. even been

  725. fair,

  726. but perhaps

  727. they didn't

  728. know.

  729. Well here

  730. we can truly

  731. see God's

  732. grace at

  733. work.

  734. For first

  735. God

  736. clearly

  737. and directly

  738. spoke to

  739. his own

  740. people.

  741. We see

  742. that again

  743. in verse

  744. 8 and

  745. verse 9

  746. it says

  747. that the

  748. Lord has

  749. sent a

  750. word against

  751. Jacob.

  752. This is a

  753. wonderful

  754. reference to

  755. the ministries

  756. of two

  757. prophets

  758. Hosea

  759. and Amos

  760. who both

  761. inward

  762. as well as

  763. with visual

  764. aids

  765. declared

  766. God's

  767. warnings

  768. and

  769. invitation

  770. to

  771. return.

  772. They were

  773. without

  774. excuse

  775. in that

  776. sense.

  777. But not

  778. only did

  779. God speak

  780. directly

  781. through

  782. his

  783. prophets

  784. to them,

  785. God also

  786. spoke to

  787. them through

  788. adversaries.

  789. In verse

  790. 11 and

  791. 12 we

  792. see that

  793. the Lord

  794. raises the

  795. adversaries

  796. of resin

  797. against them

  798. and stirs

  799. up his

  800. enemies.

  801. Now what's

  802. happening here

  803. is that the

  804. hostile nations

  805. became tools

  806. in the hands

  807. of God

  808. almost like

  809. a megaphone

  810. to try to

  811. get through

  812. to them.

  813. And this

  814. wasn't the

  815. first time

  816. that he

  817. has done

  818. that either.

  819. Think for

  820. example the

  821. young Joseph

  822. who had

  823. his dreams

  824. and was

  825. also struggling

  826. with pride.

  827. God actually

  828. used his

  829. adversaries,

  830. his brothers,

  831. to ultimately

  832. protect him

  833. from himself

  834. and actually

  835. through all of

  836. that ended

  837. up protecting

  838. his brothers

  839. and his

  840. family from

  841. dying of

  842. hunger by

  843. sending him

  844. to Egypt.

  845. So in

  846. some ways

  847. if that

  848. hadn't

  849. happened

  850. maybe the

  851. story wouldn't

  852. have continued

  853. after him.

  854. But the

  855. same of course

  856. happened in

  857. the time of

  858. the judges.

  859. That on the

  860. one hand

  861. God allows

  862. as a

  863. consequence

  864. of people's

  865. sin these

  866. adversaries

  867. to come and

  868. raise themselves

  869. up but

  870. actually it

  871. was also

  872. God's tool

  873. to bring

  874. them back

  875. to return

  876. to him

  877. to cry

  878. out to

  879. him.

  880. And

  881. unfortunately

  882. it seems

  883. that often

  884. that is

  885. what is

  886. needed

  887. for God

  888. to be able

  889. to get

  890. our

  891. attention.

  892. But almost

  893. when all

  894. these seem

  895. to fail

  896. for even

  897. in the

  898. phase of

  899. adversity

  900. the people

  901. of God

  902. were adamant

  903. that they

  904. were okay

  905. God then

  906. also spoke

  907. through direct

  908. action.

  909. And we've

  910. looked already

  911. at this verse

  912. but in verse

  913. 14 we see

  914. that after all

  915. this God

  916. then cut

  917. off from

  918. Israel

  919. head and

  920. tail or

  921. certainly

  922. promised to

  923. do that as

  924. we're not

  925. totally clear

  926. of all these

  927. things have

  928. already taken

  929. place.

  930. Now these

  931. direct actions

  932. can at times

  933. feel very

  934. harsh.

  935. Think for

  936. example of

  937. Acts chapter

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  938. 5 where

  939. Ananias and

  940. Sapphira both

  941. are killed

  942. due to their

  943. sin

  944. being

  945. hypocritical

  946. and

  947. untrue

  948. about

  949. their

  950. donation

  951. to the

  952. church

  953. and what

  954. they're

  955. holding

  956. back to

  957. themselves.

  958. Or even

  959. the Old

  960. Testament

  961. example

  962. of

  963. Yuzah

  964. who

  965. stretched

  966. out his

  967. hand

  968. to

  969. stabilize

  970. the ark

  971. and yet

  972. he was

  973. killed

  974. on the

  975. spot.

  976. We struggle

  977. with this

  978. and yet

  979. very often

  980. these were

  981. necessary

  982. to stem

  983. the flow

  984. of ongoing

  985. sinfulness

  986. and at

  987. the same

  988. time always

  989. left room

  990. for a

  991. remnant

  992. to respond.

  993. These things

  994. were in many

  995. ways never

  996. final.

  997. And so

  998. again here

  999. although

  1000. difficult and

  1001. challenging

  1002. to think of

  1003. a God who

  1004. would even

  1005. raise

  1006. adversaries

  1007. and in

  1008. direct action

  1009. would confront

  1010. his own

  1011. people we

  1012. must see

  1013. God's grace.

  1014. We must

  1015. see God's

  1016. grace in

  1017. that there's

  1018. grace before

  1019. action.

  1020. that the

  1021. word

  1022. came before

  1023. the direct

  1024. action.

  1025. And there's

  1026. even grace

  1027. in action

  1028. where God

  1029. in what

  1030. he does

  1031. has only

  1032. one purpose

  1033. in mind

  1034. and that

  1035. is for

  1036. his people

  1037. to come

  1038. back

  1039. to him.

  1040. God

  1041. deals

  1042. in that

  1043. sense

  1044. rightly

  1045. with those

  1046. who are

  1047. responsible.

  1048. He deals

  1049. with those

  1050. who are

  1051. not innocent.

  1052. He deals

  1053. with them

  1054. who have

  1055. been warned.

  1056. He deals

  1057. with them

  1058. who have

  1059. had time

  1060. to repent.

  1061. He deals

  1062. with those

  1063. who have

  1064. been

  1065. good

  1066. joled

  1067. by the

  1068. enemies

  1069. and he

  1070. speaks

  1071. before

  1072. acting.

  1073. What an

  1074. amazing

  1075. loving God

  1076. even

  1077. gracious

  1078. in his

  1079. anger.

  1080. And people

  1081. in the exact

  1082. same way

  1083. you and I

  1084. can know

  1085. the reality

  1086. of God's

  1087. anger

  1088. in our

  1089. lives.

  1090. Through

  1091. God's word

  1092. just like

  1093. them

  1094. that similarly

  1095. we get

  1096. to hear

  1097. direct

  1098. warnings

  1099. as well

  1100. as

  1101. examples

  1102. and there's

  1103. plenty

  1104. in the

  1105. Bible

  1106. of

  1107. examples

  1108. not to

  1109. follow

  1110. and in

  1111. many ways

  1112. we are

  1113. incredibly

  1114. privileged

  1115. aren't we

  1116. for the

  1117. fact that

  1118. we don't

  1119. just have

  1120. Hosea

  1121. and Amos

  1122. but we

  1123. have the

  1124. whole

  1125. of

  1126. scripture

  1127. including

  1128. the teachings

  1129. of Jesus

  1130. himself.

  1131. But I

  1132. also believe

  1133. that even

  1134. adversaries

  1135. and direct

  1136. action

  1137. can be

  1138. ways

  1139. in which

  1140. God

  1141. still

  1142. tries to

  1143. get through

  1144. to us

  1145. and explains

  1146. his anger

  1147. to us.

  1148. Now I've

  1149. got to pause

  1150. here for a

  1151. moment

  1152. and speak

  1153. very sensitively

  1154. regarding this

  1155. for it must

  1156. be clear to

  1157. all of us

  1158. that I'm

  1159. not saying

  1160. that all

  1161. opposition

  1162. or disaster

  1163. are a sign

  1164. of God's

  1165. anger

  1166. yet all

  1167. of what

  1168. happens in

  1169. our lives

  1170. are always

  1171. an opportunity

  1172. even a

  1173. spurring on

  1174. to that

  1175. repentance

  1176. for us

  1177. to

  1178. and for

  1179. us

  1180. to

  1181. start

  1182. seeking

  1183. after him

  1184. yet again.

  1185. So his

  1186. anger

  1187. whether that

  1188. is in

  1189. our lives

  1190. or not

  1191. is not

  1192. the final

  1193. word

  1194. but may

  1195. it drive

  1196. us back

  1197. to him.

  1198. Like I said

  1199. I do want

  1200. to be

  1201. sensitive

  1202. because I

  1203. acknowledge

  1204. that perhaps

  1205. there is

  1206. pain out

  1207. there in

  1208. your life

  1209. of things

  1210. that you've

  1211. been wrestling

  1212. pain that

  1213. you have

  1214. been facing.

  1215. Perhaps

  1216. you do

  1217. know full

  1218. well

  1219. God's

  1220. warnings

  1221. for choices

  1222. that you've

  1223. made and

  1224. yet you

  1225. still made

  1226. them.

  1227. Perhaps

  1228. you're dealing

  1229. with guilt

  1230. or even

  1231. uncertainty

  1232. of some

  1233. kind.

  1234. Maybe you

  1235. have a

  1236. sense that

  1237. God is

  1238. far away

  1239. that God's

  1240. blessing

  1241. has been

  1242. withdrawn in

  1243. your work

  1244. in your

  1245. life

  1246. or in

  1247. your

  1248. relationships.

  1249. Perhaps

  1250. you're

  1251. experiencing

  1252. adversary

  1253. adversary

  1254. or

  1255. opposition.

  1256. Does that

  1257. mean that

  1258. God is

  1259. angry?

  1260. That his

  1261. hand is

  1262. outstretched

  1263. still in

  1264. your life?

  1265. Well it

  1266. can be.

  1267. But as I

  1268. said

  1269. whatever it

  1270. may be

  1271. for your

  1272. opposition

  1273. may also

  1274. be simply

  1275. the result

  1276. of Satan

  1277. who goes

  1278. around like

  1279. a roaring

  1280. and prowling

  1281. lion seeking

  1282. who he may

  1283. devour.

  1284. and actually

  1285. he's trying

  1286. to seek

  1287. us out

  1288. because

  1289. actually

  1290. we are

  1291. following

  1292. God

  1293. and serving

  1294. him

  1295. wholeheartedly.

  1296. It may be

  1297. God's

  1298. discipline

  1299. rather than

  1300. his anger

  1301. that he

  1302. wants to

  1303. teach us

  1304. and to

  1305. guide us

  1306. at this

  1307. stage in

  1308. our lives

  1309. mold and

  1310. mature us

  1311. so that we

  1312. become more

  1313. and more

  1314. like him

  1315. and reflect

  1316. his character

  1317. in all

  1318. that we

  1319. do.

  1320. Or perhaps

  1321. it could

  1322. simply just

  1323. be the

  1324. consequences

  1325. of choices

  1326. that we

  1327. have made.

  1328. But

  1329. whatever

  1330. as I

  1331. said it

  1332. may be

  1333. we do

  1334. well to

  1335. read the

  1336. lessons of

  1337. our experience

  1338. and in

  1339. all circumstances

  1340. to turn

  1341. to God.

  1342. If it's

  1343. for wisdom

  1344. if it's

  1345. for wisdom

  1346. but if it's

  1347. for repentance

  1348. certainly

  1349. repent.

  1350. And may

  1351. it be a

  1352. sincere

  1353. repentance

  1354. and a

  1355. sincere

  1356. seeking

  1357. after him.

  1358. And do

  1359. it without

  1360. delay.

  1361. Do it

  1362. tonight.

  1363. These are

  1364. important

  1365. things

  1366. for us

  1367. to hear.

  1368. God's

  1369. anger

  1370. is real.

  1371. We know

  1372. the reasons

  1373. why he's

  1374. angry.

  1375. We also

  1376. understand

  1377. that he

  1378. makes it

  1379. clear to

  1380. us

  1381. through

  1382. his

  1383. word.

  1384. For

  1385. example

  1386. through

  1387. his

  1388. word

  1389. here

  1390. through

  1391. Isaiah.

  1392. So

  1393. may we

  1394. respond

  1395. and turn

  1396. to him

  1397. tonight.

  1398. But

  1399. there's

  1400. one more

  1401. thing

  1402. that we

  1403. must think

  1404. about.

  1405. And so

  1406. fourthly

  1407. after looking

  1408. at the

  1409. reality

  1410. of God's

  1411. anger

  1412. as well

  1413. as the

  1414. reason

  1415. for his

  1416. anger

  1417. as well

  1418. as how

  1419. we are

  1420. to know

  1421. about his

  1422. anger

  1423. we must

  1424. hear how

  1425. we can

  1426. truly be

  1427. saved

  1428. from God's

  1429. anger.

  1430. See when

  1431. you read

  1432. this chapter

  1433. there is

  1434. an ultimate

  1435. question

  1436. that the

  1437. chapter raises

  1438. and I believe

  1439. that the

  1440. Israelites

  1441. should have

  1442. asked.

  1443. And that's

  1444. this.

  1445. what can

  1446. turn

  1447. God's

  1448. anger

  1449. away

  1450. and stop

  1451. his arm

  1452. from being

  1453. outstretched?

  1454. How can

  1455. we all

  1456. face

  1457. the day

  1458. of reckoning

  1459. mentioned

  1460. in chapter

  1461. 10 verse

  1462. 3?

  1463. Is repentance

  1464. truly the

  1465. answer?

  1466. Well,

  1467. yes and

  1468. no,

  1469. but only a

  1470. temporary one.

  1471. Repentance

  1472. is the right

  1473. response

  1474. and yet

  1475. it doesn't

  1476. necessarily

  1477. deal with

  1478. the deeper

  1479. underlying

  1480. problem.

  1481. And that is

  1482. the problem

  1483. of the

  1484. heart,

  1485. the human

  1486. heart,

  1487. and the

  1488. injustice

  1489. that still

  1490. needs to

  1491. be set

  1492. right.

  1493. Therefore,

  1494. listen carefully.

  1495. May we

  1496. tonight

  1497. be assured

  1498. that God

  1499. is not

  1500. and never

  1501. has been

  1502. content

  1503. to show

  1504. wrath

  1505. no matter

  1506. how holy

  1507. it is.

  1508. But that

  1509. because of

  1510. that God

  1511. sent

  1512. his very

  1513. own son,

  1514. Jesus Christ,

  1515. who himself

  1516. was the

  1517. word and

  1518. who took

  1519. upon himself

  1520. the wrath

  1521. of God

  1522. for us.

  1523. It was

  1524. Jesus who

  1525. willingly

  1526. allowed himself

  1527. to be

  1528. cut off

  1529. from the

  1530. Father so

  1531. that we

  1532. don't have

  1533. to.

  1534. It was

  1535. Jesus who

  1536. defeated the

  1537. greatest

  1538. adversary,

  1539. the greatest

  1540. enemy of

  1541. all,

  1542. so that

  1543. we can

  1544. no longer

  1545. be devoured

  1546. by them.

  1547. And it

  1548. is through

  1549. Christ's

  1550. sacrifice of

  1551. himself,

  1552. the innocent

  1553. Son of

  1554. God,

  1555. that God's

  1556. anger was

  1557. satisfied,

  1558. that justice

  1559. was fulfilled,

  1560. and now

  1561. in God's

  1562. hand is

  1563. the gift

  1564. of Christ's

  1565. righteousness

  1566. righteousness

  1567. that will

  1568. be bestowed

  1569. on all

  1570. who bend

  1571. the knee

  1572. and acknowledge

  1573. and accept

  1574. Jesus as

  1575. their Lord

  1576. and their

  1577. Savior.

  1578. And so I

  1579. hope we can

  1580. see that

  1581. even a dark

  1582. and sad

  1583. chapter

  1584. teaches us

  1585. something

  1586. crucially

  1587. important.

  1588. For let

  1589. us,

  1590. unlike the

  1591. people of

  1592. God then,

  1593. understand

  1594. and see

  1595. the reality

  1596. of God's

  1597. anger,

  1598. whether we

  1599. like it or

  1600. not,

  1601. but he is

  1602. angry against

  1603. all evil,

  1604. including our

  1605. own pride

  1606. and arrogance.

  1607. Let us

  1608. never trifle

  1609. with God

  1610. or trivialize

  1611. his love,

  1612. for we will

  1613. never stand

  1614. in awe

  1615. of being

  1616. loved by

  1617. God until

  1618. we reckon

  1619. with the

  1620. seriousness of

  1621. our sin

  1622. and the

  1623. justice of

  1624. his

  1625. wrath

  1626. against us.

  1627. So let us

  1628. heed the

  1629. warning,

  1630. let us

  1631. repent

  1632. and seek

  1633. the Lord

  1634. and may

  1635. we then

  1636. know that

  1637. in the

  1638. Lord Jesus

  1639. Christ,

  1640. God will

  1641. once again

  1642. rejoice

  1643. over us

  1644. with joy.

  1645. May God

  1646. bless his

  1647. word to us

  1648. tonight

  1649. and may we

  1650. respond to

  1651. him without

  1652. delay.

  1653. Amen.

  1654. So let's

  1655. stay

  1656. there

  1657. again

  1658. for
