  1. Well, good morning, everyone. It is so lovely to have you with us.

  2. Let me encourage you to grab a Bible and come with me to the book of Leviticus and turn to chapter 16.

  3. And know that as you're turning there, you are turning to one of the most significant chapters in all of the Bible.

  4. Maybe you've picked this Sunday, you're joining us today, you're thinking, what is the good news right at the heart of Christianity?

  5. Maybe you're watching this today, you're feeling a million miles from wanting to worship the Lord.

  6. You've gone cold in your love for Jesus, you're laden with your guilt, and you're thinking, I'd rather not.

  7. Let me encourage you to tune in. What a Sunday you've picked. Leviticus chapter 16.

    Leviticus 16 chapter mention

  8. Wonderful chapter of the Bible. And here's what I want to do as we get into this today.

  9. Here's what I want you to picture. I want to picture that you're sitting there on the 1st of January, right, any year.

  10. 1st of January, you're sitting there. You're staring at that Cliff Richard calendar that your gran has got you for Christmas, right?

  11. We always end up with a Cliff Richard calendar somehow.

  12. And you're thinking, gran, you shouldn't have, you really shouldn't have.

  13. But there you are. You're looking at this calendar and you're circling your big dates.

  14. I don't know if you're the only, maybe we're the only family that does this.

  15. I don't know. Beginning of the year, there's the calendar.

  16. We're circling the dates that we're looking forward to.

  17. Here's my question for you as you're looking at that calendar.

  18. What dates are you circling?

  19. Okay.

  20. What for you are the biggest days of the year?

  21. So here's what I want you to do.

  22. Go on to the Zoom chat or the YouTube chat.

  23. Or 10 seconds.

  24. Turn to the person next to you on the sofa who you're watching this with.

  25. What for you are some of the biggest days of the year?

  26. 10 seconds.

  27. So personally, we've got our big days, don't we?

  28. Got our birthdays.

  29. Love our birthdays.

  30. Maybe for you, it's your wedding anniversary.

  31. Maybe for you, it's cup final day.

  32. Maybe for you, maybe yesterday you were Welsh.

  33. You thought that was the Grand Slam day.

  34. Didn't quite happen.

  35. I don't know.

  36. Maybe you're at school.

  37. The last day of term is the biggest day for you.

  38. Maybe you're a parent.

  39. You're thinking the first day of term is the biggest day for you.

  40. Personally, we've got our big days.

  41. Nationally, we have our big days.

  42. If you're Scottish, St Andrew's Day is a big day.

  43. Saw during the week, didn't we?

  44. Dublin, what did they do?

  45. They had a drone light show there for St Patrick's Day.

  46. Americans, they go crazy for Thanksgiving.

  47. And don't we all love Christmas Day?

  48. These big days that we're looking forward to.

  49. Here's the thing we need to understand as we come to Leviticus 16.

  50. That if you are an Old Testament Israelite, you're sitting there with your BC calendar open in front of you.

  51. This day is one of the first days that you're circling.

  52. Big day.

  53. This day that's called Yom Kippur.

  54. The Day of Atonement.

  55. Huge day if you're an Old Testament Israelite.

  56. Huge day.

  57. And if you come with me, get into the text.

  58. If you look at chapter 16 from verse 29, you'll see that this day happens once a year on the seventh day of the tenth month.

  59. This is an actual day.

  60. One day a year.

  61. And if you scan your eyes over verses 29 to 34, the rest of that little section, you'll see that this is a day of complete rest.

  62. So nobody's working on this day.

  63. Everybody's off.

  64. I guess it's the equivalent of what we would call a bank holiday.

  65. And it's interesting because on this one day, this is the one day of the year when God calls his people to fast.

  66. Presumably to prepare their hearts, focus their minds to celebrate and receive everything that this day is all about.

  67. This is a day of rejoicing.

  68. This is a day of reverence.

  69. And let me just say structurally, it's been placed right at the heart of the book of Leviticus so that future generations can see just how big a day this is.

  70. Why?

  71. Well, because this is the day when you can know that all of your sins are atoned for and they are gone forever.

  72. And because of that, you can know personally and as a nation, you can know that your God lives with you.

  73. Now, atonement is the key word that runs through this section.

  74. Atonement, sins paid for, sins dealt with, sins cleansed.

  75. Atonement, atonement, atonement, atonement.

  76. It keeps coming up in this chapter.

  77. It's a day of atonement.

  78. Huge day in the life of Israel.

  79. And maybe you're watching this.

  80. I don't know.

  81. You hear all that.

  82. You're kind of thinking to yourself, do you know what?

  83. I'll just stick with Black Friday.

  84. Thank you very much.

  85. That's my big day of the year.

  86. Well, let me just say to keep you involved.

  87. If we can understand what this day is all about and we can see and savour everything that it's pointing to,

  88. not only will we understand a bit more about why Easter is such a significant time of the year for Christians,

  89. but we'll understand why this is the best news that any of us can ever hope to hear.

  90. Here is the day of atonement.

  91. And with that goal in mind, let me give you the simplest sermon outline ever.

  92. Ready for it?

  93. One, two, three.

  94. One day, two goats, three words.

  95. One, two, three.

  96. So let's get into this, shall we?

  97. Here's what happens on this one day.

  98. The drama, as we jump into it at verse one, the drama centres on one man, right?

  99. The ones keep rolling, actually.

  100. The drama centres on one man.

  101. It's not just any man.

  102. It's a priest.

  103. Not just any priest.

  104. The high priest, who in this case is Aaron.

  105. He's the one man who's at the heart of this drama.

  106. And verse two, the ones keep on going.

  107. God invites Aaron in his role as representing the entire nation to come into one place.

  108. See it?

  109. One day, one man, one place.

  110. Now, where is this place?

  111. You'll see it in the text.

  112. Inside the curtain or behind the curtain.

  113. So Aaron's to come into this one place within the tabernacle called the Holy of Holies.

  114. Special because it is the place where the Ark of the Covenant is.

  115. It is sacred because it is the place where God has promised to meet with the high priest.

  116. This is where he lives.

  117. It's a glorious thing that God would choose to live in the midst of his people.

  118. It's a glorious thing.

  119. But remember the context.

  120. It's a frightening thing.

  121. See the context.

  122. Verse one and two.

  123. This has come straight after the time when Nadab and Abihu have just casually, complacently,

  124. just ran into this place and lost their lives.

  125. The nation, Aaron in particular, so aware that this is a glorious thing.

  126. And this is a holy thing.

  127. You can't just run into the presence of a holy God unless he invites you.

  128. Right?

  129. And to shelter the people from the fire of God's holiness, there is a massive curtain which is put up,

  130. which is effectively a no entry sign.

  131. It is not safe for you to come in here.

  132. And yet on this one day, God invites the high priest to come into his presence.

  133. Now all of these details are hugely significant, which we'll see at the end.

  134. But in this one day, God invites Aaron to come into his presence.

  135. You ever had that feeling?

  136. You ever had that experience when you've found yourself in the presence of greatness?

  137. I remember as a junior lawyer, within the first few weeks of me starting at my first firm,

  138. having to go into the senior partner's office to get something signed off.

  139. And so there I am, a fresh-faced 23-year-old, walking up to his door.

  140. His name is in a huge plaque on the door, senior partner.

  141. And all the letters after his name.

  142. I swear there was more letters after his name than there was in my name.

  143. And so there I am, knees trembling, palms sweating, and he asked me to come in.

  144. Have I had an experience like that?

  145. How much more would Aaron have felt that as he approaches the place where the holy God lives?

  146. The only way you would ever dream about going in there is if God ushers you to come in.

  147. What's interesting, again, a lovely detail here if you look at verse 4,

  148. is that God tells Aaron that he needs to get changed before he comes in.

  149. Now, we would expect, wouldn't we, just looking at that, this would be a dressing-up kind of affair.

  150. You ever got one of those invitations to a party and it just says black tie?

  151. Black tie means dress up, doesn't it?

  152. Everyone's looking out, their best dress and their dickie bow tie.

  153. But the invitation here, interestingly, is not to dress up, it's to dress down.

  154. Isn't that fascinating?

  155. It's to dress down.

  156. God says to Aaron, to come in here, you need to take off your kingly gear, take it off,

  157. and you have to put on this linen tunic, this linen outfit.

  158. In other words, if you're going to come in here, you need to dress like a servant.

  159. Because that's what you're doing in here.

  160. You're serving.

  161. In your capacity, it's the high priest.

  162. It's what you're doing.

  163. Because look what's happened.

  164. If you look at verse 16,

  165. the place where God dwells,

  166. because of all the people's sin,

  167. because of their uncleanness,

  168. is in need of a deep clean.

  169. Think about it like this.

  170. This is how I was trying to picture it this week.

  171. You ever had that experience where you've

  172. found yourself in the middle of a really busy city,

  173. and you happen to go out that morning,

  174. and you're wearing a brand spanking new white t-shirt?

  175. You ever had that experience?

  176. And you're going through the day,

  177. I don't know where you are,

  178. London, Beijing, whatever you are,

  179. and you get to the end of the day,

  180. and you look at your t-shirt,

  181. and you smell yourself,

  182. and you think to yourself,

  183. this thing is filthy.

  184. Take that concept and

  185. crank it up a few gears.

  186. Imagine it's not just a white t-shirt that you're wearing.

  187. Imagine you're wearing a white t-shirt,

  188. and you're living in an entirely white house.

  189. White carpets,

  190. white wallpaper,

  191. white sofas,

  192. white shaggy dog,

  193. and you happen to be living in your white house

  194. in the middle of a coal mining town.

  195. Okay, what's going to happen

  196. every time you open a window?

  197. What's going to happen every time

  198. you go out your front door?

  199. Dirt's going to come in,

  200. isn't it?

  201. Now,

  202. the cumulative effect of that,

  203. what's going to happen to your house

  204. over the space of a year?

  205. It's going to be filthy,

  206. isn't it?

  207. It's kind of like,

  208. kind of like,

  209. what's happening here.

  210. God lives in the midst of his people.

  211. He's right in the middle of his people.

  212. And their sin,

  213. their uncleanness,

  214. has polluted the place where he lives.

  215. So what needs to happen,

  216. verse 17,

  217. is that atonement needs to be made.

  218. Atonement needs to be made.

  219. So what the priest is about to do

  220. is going to atone for everything.

  221. Right?

  222. The sanctuary,

  223. the altar,

  224. the tent of meeting,

  225. the priests,

  226. and all the people.

  227. In other words,

  228. individual sacrifices

  229. covered individual sins.

  230. The atoning sacrifice here

  231. covers every one of God's people

  232. and everything that's going on

  233. and everything that they've ever done.

  234. So that this God

  235. can continue to live with his people.

  236. Because that's his heart.

  237. He loves.

  238. He's a God of love.

  239. He wants to dwell with his people.

  240. And this is the day

  241. when you can know

  242. that that has happened.

  243. Big day.

  244. Huge day.

  245. So we move from one day

  246. to consider two goals.

  247. Verse 6.

  248. And this is incredible.

  249. He comes to the tent of meeting.

  250. What is he bringing?

  251. He's bringing a bull

  252. to sacrifice for his own sin.

  253. And as well as that,

  254. verse 7,

  255. he's bringing two goats.

  256. Two goats.

  257. Cast lots, right?

  258. What goat's going to play what part?

  259. It falls.

  260. Verse 9.

  261. Goat number 1 is up.

  262. Goat number 1 is going to be

  263. killed to atone for,

  264. shed its blood for,

  265. die instead of,

  266. the people because of their sin.

  267. So verse 15.

  268. The high priest kills it

  269. then brings its blood

  270. inside the curtain

  271. and sprinkles it

  272. on the mercy seat.

  273. This is the place

  274. where God has explicitly said

  275. he will meet with his people.

  276. So think about

  277. what's going on there.

  278. This little goat,

  279. this little goat

  280. bearing the sins,

  281. dying instead of

  282. all of the people.

  283. Little goat,

  284. all of the people.

  285. That's what's happened.

  286. The fate of goat number 1.

  287. Died.

  288. Blood spilt.

  289. Atones for all the people.

  290. And the priest then

  291. turns his focus,

  292. Aaron turns his focus

  293. to think about goat number 2.

  294. Verse 10.

  295. There's a difference

  296. between the fates of the goats.

  297. Goat number 1 is dying.

  298. Goat number 2 is going to live.

  299. Have a look at the end of verse 10.

  300. Where is this goat going?

  301. What's going to happen to this goat?

  302. This goat is for Azazel.

  303. Now some take that Azazel

  304. as a place name.

  305. It's way out there

  306. in the wilderness.

  307. Somewhere that they've called

  308. the wilderness space.

  309. Way outside the camp.

  310. That's Azazel.

  311. It might be that.

  312. But it is probably more likely

  313. it's just the Hebrew word

  314. from which our translations

  315. get scapegoat.

  316. Scapegoat.

  317. Now that's the term we get.

  318. That's the term we use

  319. all the time.

  320. Have a think in your mind.

  321. Famous scapegoats

  322. from history.

  323. Some of you might be

  324. old enough to remember

  325. Yoko Ono

  326. who was John Lennon's wife.

  327. Rumors were going around

  328. at the time

  329. that apparently

  330. it was her influence

  331. that led to the breakup

  332. of the Beatles.

  333. And because of these rumors

  334. she was enemy number 1

  335. in the eyes of all the fans

  336. and reporters.

  337. Right?

  338. She was a scapegoat.

  339. I'm old enough to remember

  340. David Beckham

  341. getting sent off

  342. in the 1998

  343. France World Cup.

  344. He gets sent off.

  345. England go out.

  346. Back home

  347. people are burning strips.

  348. Beckham seven.

  349. Straw men

  350. chopping their heads off.

  351. He's the scapegoat.

  352. Some of you might just

  353. have seen in the news

  354. this week

  355. about a man called

  356. Tom Hayes

  357. just out of prison.

  358. He was the first banker

  359. back in 2008

  360. to be jailed

  361. for allegedly rigging

  362. the stock markets

  363. that resulted

  364. in the financial crash.

  365. He was in jail

  366. served his time

  367. he's just out

  368. and he's trying to

  369. prove his innocence

  370. before the court

  371. taking his case

  372. to appeal.

  373. What's he saying?

  374. He's saying in 2008

  375. people were just desperate

  376. for somebody to blame

  377. and I was that guy.

  378. He was a scapegoat.

  379. Somebody who

  380. takes the rap

  381. somebody onto whom

  382. all the blame goes

  383. well here's the

  384. original scapegoat.

  385. That's this goat.

  386. And try and get

  387. into this

  388. right?

  389. Verse 20

  390. Aaron is to get

  391. the goat.

  392. Now if you know

  393. anything about sheep

  394. or goats

  395. have you ever tried

  396. to catch one

  397. you know that they

  398. don't just kind of

  399. flop over and roll

  400. over and give

  401. themselves to you.

  402. No Aaron's got to

  403. catch this thing.

  404. Maybe he's running

  405. around I don't know

  406. he's got to wrestle

  407. it to the ground

  408. and then he's got to

  409. highly symbolically

  410. place both of his

  411. hands on its head.

  412. Do you see that?

  413. Both of his hands

  414. on its head

  415. and he has to

  416. confess over it

  417. all the sins

  418. of the people.

  419. Wonder how long

  420. he was there for?

  421. Confessing over it

  422. all the sins

  423. of the people

  424. and all the sins

  425. that phrase

  426. comes up again

  427. and again

  428. and again

  429. all the sins

  430. and there's

  431. thousands of them

  432. thousands of Israelites

  433. and each of them

  434. have got thousands

  435. of sins

  436. and all of their

  437. sin

  438. all their gossiping

  439. all their envy

  440. all their backstabbing

  441. all their lustful

  442. thoughts

  443. all their fights

  444. all their anger

  445. every single sin

  446. loaded onto the head

  447. of this little goat

  448. and after doing that

  449. Aaron brings the goat

  450. out

  451. so the people

  452. can see

  453. someone else

  454. has got the job

  455. of leading this goat

  456. out of the camp

  457. right

  458. imagine that job

  459. your job is to

  460. take the goat

  461. who's representing

  462. all your sins

  463. all the sins

  464. of your sins

  465. of your people

  466. including your own

  467. on its head

  468. get it out of here

  469. get it out

  470. you can imagine

  471. can't you

  472. the scene

  473. as the people

  474. line up

  475. making a way

  476. right

  477. make a way

  478. for this to happen

  479. get this goat

  480. out of here

  481. everyone's watching

  482. this moment

  483. some will be

  484. celebrating this

  485. moment

  486. some will be

  487. hugging

  488. embracing one

  489. another

  490. some will be

  491. weeping

  492. some will just be

  493. still in reverence

  494. as they respond

  495. to the goat

  496. who goes

  497. because they

  498. understand what

  499. is going on

  500. in this moment

  501. all of my sin

  502. atoned for

  503. and gone

  504. this is the goat

  505. that goes

  506. and as it goes

  507. you can know

  508. that you are

  509. never seeing

  510. your sin again

  511. never seeing

  512. it again

  513. and so having

  514. done all that

  515. the high priest

  516. verse 23

  517. having served

  518. goes back in

  519. takes off

  520. his linen

  521. garments

  522. and leaves

  523. them there

  524. he bathes

  525. makes himself

  526. clean

  527. puts back

  528. on his usual

  529. attire

  530. and a few

  531. more jobs

  532. and his

  533. work

  534. is

  535. finished

  536. until next

  537. year

  538. and then

  539. the year

  540. after that

  541. and the year

  542. after that

  543. every year

  544. this happens

  545. every year

  546. this big day

  547. every year

  548. you can know

  549. as you think

  550. about what's

  551. going on

  552. in this moment

  553. that your sins

  554. have been

  555. atoned for

  556. your sins

  557. have been

  558. dealt with

  559. the price

  560. has been

  561. paid

  562. and the goat

  563. has taken

  564. them away

  565. it's a big

  566. day

  567. as God

  568. engraves

  569. this way

  570. of thinking

  571. into the

  572. minds of his

  573. people

  574. why

  575. well because

  576. this man

  577. would pitch

  578. up many

  579. many years

  580. later

  581. and be the

  582. very fulfillment

  583. of everything

  584. that this day

  585. stood for

  586. so friends

  587. here's what

  588. we're going to

  589. do is we

  590. almost bring

  591. this to a

  592. close

  593. one day

  594. two goats

  595. three words

  596. and the

  597. three words

  598. are the last

  599. that Jesus

  600. uttered on the

  601. cross

  602. cried out

  603. what did he

  604. cry

  605. John chapter

    John 19 chapter mention

  606. 19

  607. we read it

  608. earlier

  609. he cried

  610. out

  611. it is

  612. finished

  613. three words

  614. one word

  615. in the Greek

  616. but you'll let

  617. me away

  618. with it

  619. three words

  620. it is

  621. finished

  622. and we have

  623. to ask

  624. what is

  625. finished

  626. it's not

  627. him that's

  628. finished

  629. something else

  630. is finished

  631. what's

  632. finished

  633. well

  634. the themes

  635. that we

  636. thought about

  637. today

  638. goat one

  639. goat two

  640. high priest

  641. all of them

  642. come gloriously

  643. together

  644. in the person

  645. and the work

  646. of Jesus

  647. let me just

  648. really quickly

  649. trace this

  650. theme through

  651. John's gospel

  652. love John's

  653. gospel

  654. been reading it

  655. for years

  656. still amazed

  657. at the things

  658. that you find

  659. out as you

  660. read it

  661. here's what's

  662. going on

  663. what happens

  664. in John

  665. chapter one

  666. what does

  667. John the

  668. Baptist

  669. declare

  670. as Jesus

  671. pitches up

  672. near the

  673. Jordan

  674. river

  675. what does

  676. he declare

  677. of him

  678. he says

  679. here is

  680. the Lamb

  681. of God

  682. who does

  683. what

  684. who takes

  685. away the

  686. sin of the

  687. world

  688. in other

  689. words

  690. here is

  691. the true

  692. scapegoat

  693. you know

  694. our oldest

  695. daughter is

  696. trying to

  697. learn compass

  698. directions

  699. just now

  700. right

  701. never eat

  702. shredded wheat

  703. go around the house

  704. saying it

  705. never eat

  706. shredded wheat

  707. never eat

  708. shredded wheat

  709. it was never

  710. eat soggy

  711. wheat

  712. to bixen

  713. my day

  714. but we'll

  715. get on our

  716. way with it

  717. never eat

  718. shredded wheat

  719. you remember

  720. learning directions

  721. when you were

  722. young

  723. remember learning

  724. that which way

  725. is west

  726. and you would

  727. look and

  728. this way is

  729. west and you

  730. would say to

  731. yourself where

  732. does west end

  733. and well it

  734. kind of doesn't

  735. end it's just

  736. kind of that

  737. way and you

  738. would turn

  739. where is east

  740. east is this

  741. way and you

  742. look over and

  743. say where does

  744. east end

  745. well it doesn't

  746. really it just

  747. kind of keeps

  748. on going

  749. I love that

  750. that's how

  751. God describes

  752. what's happened

  753. to our sins

  754. psalm 103

  755. we read it

  756. at the start

  757. as far as

  758. the east

  759. is from

  760. the west

  761. how far

  762. is that

  763. I can't get

  764. my head

  765. around that

  766. that's exactly

  767. the point

  768. as far as

  769. the east

  770. is from

  771. the west

  772. that's how

  773. far he

  774. has removed

  775. our transgressions

  776. from us

  777. never seeing

  778. it again

  779. the day

  780. the east

  781. meets the west

  782. is the day

  783. that you will

  784. see your sins

  785. again

  786. you will

  787. never see

  788. it again

  789. and Jesus

  790. is the reason

  791. that you can

  792. know that

  793. not just as

  794. a nice

  795. sentiment

  796. you can

  797. know that

  798. I can

  799. know that

  800. we can

  801. know that

  802. as a concrete

  803. truth in which

  804. we can build

  805. our lives

  806. as far as

  807. the east

  808. is from

  809. the west

  810. that's how

  811. far

  812. that's how

  813. far

  814. Christ has

  815. removed our

  816. sins from

  817. us

  818. he's removed

  819. all of our

  820. sin

  821. on him

  822. laid

  823. your past

  824. sin

  825. your present

  826. sin

  827. your future

  828. sin

  829. all of it

  830. on him

  831. because of his

  832. work

  833. on the cross

  834. think about

  835. what happens

  836. where is

  837. Jesus led

  838. as he carries

  839. the cross

  840. where is he led

  841. outside the city

  842. there goes

  843. on this man

  844. carrying the cross

  845. there he goes

  846. bearing my sin

  847. remember there's a

  848. hymn that we used to sing

  849. at primary school

  850. there is a green hill

  851. far away

  852. without a city wall

  853. where the dear

  854. Lord was

  855. crucified

  856. who died

  857. who died

  858. to save

  859. us all

  860. there goes

  861. the Lamb

  862. of God

  863. bearing my

  864. sin on the cross

  865. Jesus is everything

  866. that goat number

  867. two is pointing

  868. to and he's

  869. everything that goat

  870. number one is

  871. pointing to as

  872. well

  873. John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  874. as we move through

  875. John's gospel

  876. what does he declare

  877. of himself

  878. who is he

  879. he is the good

  880. shepherd

  881. who has come

  882. to do what

  883. lay down his

  884. life for the

  885. sheep

  886. tell you what

  887. the goat here

  888. is making a

  889. struggle

  890. probably having a

  891. fight

  892. but the shepherd

  893. of God

  894. lays down his

  895. life for the

  896. sheep

  897. willingly

  898. that's why the

  899. new testament

  900. keeps talking about

  901. Jesus' death on the

  902. cross as an atoning

  903. sacrifice for sin

  904. that's what atonement

  905. means

  906. Jesus absorbs and

  907. satisfies the wrath

  908. of God

  909. he takes the hit

  910. that I deserve

  911. he dies

  912. I live

  913. he is goat

  914. number one

  915. he is goat

  916. number two

  917. and friends

  918. in his personal

  919. work he is the

  920. high priest

  921. John chapter 20

    John 20 chapter mention

  922. Jesus is crucified

  923. spoiler alert

  924. he rises

  925. and Mary runs

  926. to the tomb

  927. and she's

  928. confused

  929. there is no

  930. body there

  931. what have they

  932. done with it

  933. so she runs

  934. back to get

  935. the others

  936. and Peter

  937. and John

  938. come running

  939. always love how

  940. John tells us

  941. that he won

  942. the race

  943. right

  944. get over it

  945. mate

  946. it's all right

  947. John won

  948. the race

  949. he was the

  950. first there

  951. but Peter

  952. looks in

  953. and Mary's

  954. right

  955. she's absolutely

  956. right

  957. there's no

  958. body there

  959. he doesn't

  960. see anything

  961. there but he

  962. does see

  963. something

  964. three times

  965. we get it

  966. in John

    John 20 chapter mention

  967. chapter 20

  968. in these

  969. verses

  970. verses 5

  971. and 7

  972. what's there

  973. eyewitness

  974. detail

  975. what's there

  976. what's rolled

  977. up and left

  978. there as

  979. Jesus exits

  980. the tomb

  981. the linen

  982. cloths that

  983. were on his

  984. body

  985. as if to

  986. say

  987. John's way

  988. of telling

  989. us

  990. that the

  991. work of the

  992. great high

  993. priest is

  994. done

  995. it's

  996. finished

  997. once and

  998. for all

  999. it is

  1000. finished

  1001. on this

  1002. day the

  1003. high priest

  1004. who only

  1005. once a

  1006. year

  1007. could come

  1008. into God's

  1009. very presence

  1010. and only upon

  1011. God's invitation

  1012. what happens

  1013. as Jesus

  1014. dies

  1015. he's crucified

  1016. outside

  1017. what's going

  1018. on in the

  1019. temple

  1020. the curtain

  1021. is torn in

  1022. two

  1023. hugely

  1024. significant

  1025. because of

  1026. the work

  1027. of this

  1028. high priest

  1029. because he

  1030. is atoned

  1031. once and

  1032. all for

  1033. our sin

  1034. if you're

  1035. a Christian

  1036. you can

  1037. know

  1038. that you

  1039. have

  1040. right now

  1041. what only

  1042. one man

  1043. and one

  1044. day a year

  1045. could do

  1046. you have

  1047. access to

  1048. a holy

  1049. God

  1050. as God

  1051. invites the

  1052. world to

  1053. trust in

  1054. his son

  1055. as that

  1056. curtain

  1057. is torn

  1058. in two

  1059. the way

  1060. to God

  1061. is open

  1062. through the

  1063. work of

  1064. the son

  1065. as God

  1066. invites the

  1067. world to

  1068. trust in

  1069. him and

  1070. come into

  1071. my very

  1072. presence

  1073. friends

  1074. one day

  1075. two

  1076. goals

  1077. three

  1078. words

  1079. what a

  1080. day

  1081. big day

  1082. everyone's

  1083. watching

  1084. in the

  1085. camp

  1086. everyone's

  1087. watching

  1088. some will

  1089. be

  1090. cheering

  1091. some will

  1092. be

  1093. celebrating

  1094. some will

  1095. be

  1096. hugging

  1097. some will

  1098. be crying

  1099. some will

  1100. just be

  1101. still in

  1102. reverence

  1103. as they

  1104. respond to

  1105. everything that

  1106. this day

  1107. represents

  1108. everything that's

  1109. going on

  1110. and I take

  1111. it friends

  1112. that right

  1113. now but maybe

  1114. particularly in a

  1115. couple of weeks

  1116. time as we

  1117. remember Christ

  1118. on the cross

  1119. as we remember

  1120. our great high

  1121. priest

  1122. I take it

  1123. that our

  1124. response should

  1125. be exactly

  1126. the same

  1127. let me just

  1128. close with the

  1129. words of the

  1130. Stuart Town

  1131. end song

  1132. now the

  1133. daylight

  1134. flees

  1135. now the

  1136. ground

  1137. beneath

  1138. quakes

  1139. as its

  1140. maker

  1141. bows

  1142. his head

  1143. curtain

  1144. torn in

  1145. two

  1146. dead

  1147. are raised

  1148. to life

  1149. finished

  1150. the

  1151. victory

  1152. power

  1153. victory

  1154. cry

  1155. this

  1156. the power

  1157. of the

  1158. cross

  1159. Christ

  1160. became

  1161. sin

  1162. for us

  1163. took

  1164. the

  1165. blame

  1166. bore

  1167. the

  1168. wrath

  1169. we

  1170. stand

  1171. forgiven

  1172. at the

  1173. cross

  1174. the day

  1175. of atonement

  1176. Leviticus 16

  1177. the glory

  1178. of the

  1179. gospel

  1180. let us

  1181. pray

  1182. together

  1183. father

  1184. thank you

  1185. for your

  1186. great love

  1187. for us

  1188. that love

  1189. that

  1190. that

  1191. saw your

  1192. son

  1193. come

  1194. and live

  1195. and die

  1196. and rise

  1197. thank you

  1198. that he

  1199. lives

  1200. because his

  1201. work is

  1202. done

  1203. and so

  1204. father

  1205. I pray

  1206. for any

  1207. watching this

  1208. today

  1209. who might

  1210. not know

  1211. who you

  1212. are

  1213. might not

  1214. understand

  1215. what you

  1216. have done

  1217. lord may

  1218. this be

  1219. the day

  1220. through the

  1221. power of

  1222. your spirit

  1223. that they

  1224. come to

  1225. trust in

  1226. Jesus

  1227. and have

  1228. life in

  1229. his name

  1230. father I

  1231. pray for

  1232. those who

  1233. are watching

  1234. this who

  1235. are just

  1236. burdened with

  1237. guilt

  1238. who are

  1239. feeling a

  1240. million miles

  1241. away from

  1242. you just

  1243. now lord

  1244. may they

  1245. know the

  1246. glory of

  1247. Jesus

  1248. the son

  1249. of God

  1250. who loved

  1251. us

  1252. and gave

  1253. himself for

  1254. us

  1255. lord we

  1256. just praise

  1257. you that

  1258. you are the

  1259. god of all

  1260. grace

  1261. and we

  1262. thank you

  1263. and we

  1264. pray these

  1265. things

  1266. confidently

  1267. in our

  1268. high priest's

  1269. name

  1270. Jesus

  1271. Christ

  1272. amen
