  1. Well folks, it's wonderful to see you this morning after about four or five months of

  2. preaching to an empty building.

  3. This is refreshing to my soul even just to see you today.

  4. And welcome to those who are joining us online as well.

  5. Why don't we just pray, just really quickly as we come to God's Word.

  6. Isaiah chapter 66, God says, but this is the one to whom I will look, to the humble and

    Isaiah 66 chapter mention

  7. contrite in spirit who trembles at my Word.

  8. And Father, we just ask that you would help give us that spirit today as we come to your Word.

  9. Father, help us, challenge us, mould us, convict us, encourage us and spur us on, Father, as

  10. we turn to your Word this morning.

  11. We ask in Jesus' precious name.

  12. Amen.

  13. Amen.

  14. Well folks, let me encourage you to grab a Bible and turn back to Leviticus chapter 17.

    Leviticus 17 chapter mention

  15. So we are ambitiously this morning going to finish our series that we've been in in this

  16. book of Leviticus.

  17. And we're taking our 11 chapters this morning.

  18. So buckle up, cowboys and cowgirls.

  19. It's going to be a heavy ride, but I hope we'll get there.

  20. But this is the thing that we need to see that kind of holds this together.

  21. Here today is the call that this holy God makes upon the lives of his people.

  22. And you can think about it a bit like this.

  23. Okay, our little girl Grace, something that I've learned about her that she loves doing.

  24. She loves a spot the difference puzzle.

  25. And there was a spell certainly during lockdown where we read every night her Biff and Chip books.

  26. If you remember these things when you were school, they're still going, Biff and Chip books.

  27. And amazingly, they're still the same age, the characters in it.

  28. But we read these every night, most of the nights.

  29. And they often finish with a spot the difference puzzle.

  30. So she loves doing these little puzzles.

  31. So we'll be sitting there doing them.

  32. And you know how it works.

  33. You've got two pictures that are right next to each other.

  34. And one's the normal one, one's got the differences in it.

  35. So the two of us are looking at this.

  36. And she's concentrating really hard.

  37. And she's looking at it really hard.

  38. And she says, Daddy, Daddy, there's a difference.

  39. There's a difference.

  40. Same routine again.

  41. Daddy, Daddy, Daddy.

  42. There's a difference.

  43. There's a difference.

  44. And then she turns to me and she would often say, Daddy, can you see any differences?

  45. And there's never a more humbling moment in life, honestly, when as an adult, you look at some of these pictures.

  46. And you cannot fathom it.

  47. You have been defeated by a child's puzzle, right?

  48. It's why we don't do Where's Wally anymore in our house at bedtime.

  49. A humbling experience when you are defeated.

  50. But she loves these spot the difference puzzles.

  51. And we keep on going until we've seen all the differences.

  52. And there's a ton of things going on in these chapters.

  53. But here's the big thing that kind of holds it together.

  54. This holy, holy, holy God is calling his people to be different.

  55. If you remember one thing from today, remember that a holy God calls his people to be different.

  56. And the key word in this section is the word holy.

  57. Probably picked it up from the themes this morning.

  58. Holy.

  59. We get it 28 times in these chapters.

  60. So if you want to think about it like this, if these chapters are like a stick of Blackpool rock,

  61. okay, I'm the son of a dentist.

  62. We're never allowed it.

  63. But this is what I'm told.

  64. Cut into it anywhere, these chapters.

  65. And you'll find the holiness theme running all the way through the middle.

  66. Now come with me to chapter 20 and verse 22.

  67. And let me show you how this works.

  68. Chapter 20 and verse 22.

  69. Here's what God says to his people.

  70. Verse 22.

  71. Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them.

  72. So that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out.

  73. You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you.

  74. Because they did all these things, I abhorred them.

  75. But I said to you, you will possess the land.

  76. I will give it to you as an inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey.

  77. I am the Lord your God who has set you apart from the nations.

  78. You therefore must make a distinction between clean and unclean animals and between unclean and clean birds.

  79. Do not defile yourselves by any animal or bird or anything that moves along the ground.

  80. Those that I have set apart as unclean for you.

  81. And here is verse 26.

  82. And if you've not followed the reading so far, jump in at verse 26 of chapter 20.

  83. You are to be holy to me because I, the Lord, am holy and have set you apart from the nations to be my own.

  84. So hold on to verse 26 there.

  85. What we're going to do is we're going to use it almost as our base camp verse from which we're going to explore the rest of these chapters.

  86. So God is calling his people to be different.

  87. To be holy.

  88. And the challenge is going to come at us today as God's people is to consider whether we are embracing his holy call in our lives.

  89. And verse 26 gives us the two sides of the holiness coin.

  90. And these will be our two points for today.

  91. Here's the first side of this coin.

  92. Holiness is something that we're called to take in.

  93. Now here's what I mean by that.

  94. Verse 26 could easily be translated,

  95. You are to be holy to me because I, the Lord, am holy and I have holied you from the nations to be my own.

  96. In other words, to be holy is firstly a verb that's describing an action that God has done for us.

  97. Before it's an adjective, this is to describe how we live.

  98. And maybe at this point we need to tap back into the Bible story.

  99. God has made a promise to Abraham way back in Genesis 12.

  100. It's a massive chapter in the Bible.

  101. That through him and his offspring, God is going to bless the nations of the world.

  102. This God has a missionary heart to reach the peoples of the world.

  103. And if you want evidence of that, look around at us.

  104. And so here are Israel, the people who God has chosen to be the people that he will use,

  105. to be the vehicle by which this blessing is going to come to the world.

  106. Not because they are great or special or better than anyone else,

  107. but because this God is so good and great and abounding in steadfast love.

  108. And he's rescued them from Egypt.

  109. He's called out his people.

  110. And he's led them to Sinai.

  111. And here is the way that he calls them to live as his people.

  112. You know, my favorite creatures are in those little TV shows.

  113. You know, the nature programs you get on telly.

  114. I love the chameleons.

  115. Love the chameleons.

  116. Right? Chilled out little dudes, aren't they?

  117. Never seen a chameleon in a rush.

  118. But what are chameleons known for?

  119. They're known just for blending in.

  120. To their background, right?

  121. Just blending.

  122. And what we need to see is that God's people are called to be the exact opposite.

  123. From the Egyptians, right?

  124. The people that they've just come from.

  125. Remember, they've seen that way of life.

  126. They've been brought out of it.

  127. And from the Canaanites who are in the land,

  128. who they will rub shoulders with in the not-so-distant future,

  129. who, if you look at the beginning of chapter 20,

  130. the Canaanites are all out in worship of Molech.

  131. Right?

  132. You see, you get it quite a lot of times at the beginning of chapter 20.

  133. Molech, Molech, Molech.

  134. This is what the Canaanites worship.

  135. And God, in his goodness and sovereignty,

  136. knows that when the people go into the land,

  137. this is the God that they're going to come up against.

  138. These are the people who are worshiping.

  139. And there's child sacrifice and all sorts of things caught up in the worship of Molech.

  140. And in contrast, Israel are called to worship the Lord alone.

  141. Okay?

  142. The Lord, our God, is one.

  143. Right?

  144. We've only got eyes for him.

  145. We worship him alone.

  146. In contrast to the nations round about who are worshiping all sorts of different gods,

  147. we worship the Lord, our God, alone in the way that he has told us to worship him.

  148. Or just any way.

  149. Or our way.

  150. The way that he has told us to worship him.

  151. And as they do this,

  152. what's meant to happen is the people from the nations round about,

  153. the people from the world,

  154. and I hope you see where this applies to us.

  155. Okay?

  156. The peoples from the world round about are supposed to look in at Israel

  157. and they're meant to say,

  158. how lucky are Israel,

  159. how lucky are God's people that they have their God dwelling right in the middle of them.

  160. He dwells with them.

  161. He's not somewhere out there.

  162. He is right in the middle of his people.

  163. He lives with them.

  164. How lucky are Israel.

  165. How lucky are they to have the laws of this God

  166. and be able to walk in them

  167. to see the goodness of the way that God has called them to live.

  168. Israel are to live with,

  169. and this is Chris Wright,

  170. what he calls a missional magnetism.

  171. Love that phrase, missional magnetism.

  172. It's not just me that likes to alliterate, right?

  173. Missional magnetism.

  174. The world round about is supposed to see something

  175. and be drawn towards it goodness.

  176. In other words, the nations are like the moth

  177. and they're to be drawn to Israel's flame.

  178. And God's taken his people to the promised land

  179. and it's why the Canaanites who are currently occupying the land

  180. can't live there anymore

  181. because they've defiled it with their practices against this God.

  182. Because if God's people are to dwell with God,

  183. in God's place, under God's rule, to God's glory,

  184. enjoying him forever,

  185. which is where the trajectory of the Bible story is going,

  186. then holiness needs to be everywhere in the land.

  187. Everywhere in the land.

  188. And so bring that all together, friends.

  189. To be holy by God,

  190. to be his,

  191. to be called apart for him,

  192. by him and for him,

  193. is a privilege.

  194. Maybe you want to take stock to remember that this morning.

  195. As a Christian,

  196. it's not just you made a call to make a lifestyle choice,

  197. but you did make a call to put your faith in Jesus.

  198. God has called you out

  199. to be his own.

  200. You are his treasured possession.

  201. You are chosen in love by God the Father

  202. before the foundation of the world.

  203. To be his is a privilege.

  204. So holiness, you see,

  205. is something that first and foremost,

  206. we are called to take in.

  207. And secondly,

  208. the other side of the coin,

  209. holiness is something

  210. that God's people are to live out.

  211. So here's the repeated frame

  212. that you get in this section.

  213. You shall be holy

  214. because I,

  215. the Lord,

  216. your God,

  217. am holy.

  218. So God's people are called

  219. like a mirror,

  220. sun shining off it,

  221. radiating it to the world,

  222. called to reflect the holiness of their God

  223. and the way that they live.

  224. And what is striking

  225. as you read these chapters through

  226. is just how comprehensive a call this is

  227. on every person

  228. in society,

  229. in every area of their lives.

  230. Right?

  231. There's a big Asda

  232. just down the road from us

  233. at Straighten.

  234. I remember being amazed,

  235. thinking that it was open 24-7.

  236. You got one of those around about you?

  237. Maybe it's,

  238. doesn't need to be an Asda,

  239. but something that's open 24-7, right?

  240. I'm getting my head around that.

  241. It's open all the time.

  242. That is open all the time.

  243. I can go there anytime I want.

  244. You can go there anytime you want.

  245. Never closes.

  246. Never off duty.

  247. Never stops.

  248. Never ceases.

  249. Always open.

  250. God, do you see,

  251. in such a greater way,

  252. is calling his people

  253. to 24-7 holiness.

  254. Every day of their lives

  255. and every area of their lives,

  256. he's calling them

  257. to 24-7 radical holiness.

  258. And so here's what we're going to attempt to do

  259. is dip in and out of these chapters.

  260. And there's so much going on here.

  261. You'll appreciate it.

  262. You don't get time to do any of it.

  263. Tons of justice.

  264. But let me just pick out four ways

  265. that God's people really quickly

  266. are going to be different

  267. from the world around them.

  268. Four ways,

  269. four marks would be like

  270. of this holy community.

  271. Here's number one,

  272. mark one.

  273. The poor will be loved.

  274. The poor will be loved.

  275. So God lays out commands,

  276. like the one we read,

  277. Hannah just read,

  278. chapter 19, verse 9.

  279. When you bring in the harvest,

  280. your crops and your fruit,

  281. what's God saying?

  282. He says,

  283. if you own the land,

  284. don't plow all the way to the edges.

  285. Leave a bit.

  286. Right?

  287. Leave a bit.

  288. Why have you to leave a bit?

  289. So that the poor can come in.

  290. Those who aren't as well off as you.

  291. And they can be provided for.

  292. Because remember,

  293. the land is the Lord's.

  294. Land is the Lord's.

  295. Do you see in that way,

  296. the poor are cared for.

  297. God has got the poor in his heart,

  298. in this community.

  299. Or take the year of Jubilee.

  300. You get that in 25,

  301. chapter 25.

  302. This year that happened,

  303. every 50th year.

  304. The cancellation of debts,

  305. the release of slaves,

  306. the reallocation of property

  307. to its original owners,

  308. that they can buy it back.

  309. Again, what's at the heart

  310. of the year of Jubilee?

  311. This year that almost acted

  312. like the great reset

  313. in the life of God's people.

  314. So that there doesn't,

  315. surely it's this,

  316. if you think about it,

  317. so that there doesn't become

  318. a huge gap

  319. between the rich and the poor.

  320. So that there doesn't exist

  321. a society where the rich

  322. are getting richer

  323. and the poor are getting poorer.

  324. And because of that,

  325. envy is existing

  326. between these two groups.

  327. And who primarily benefits

  328. from the year of Jubilee?

  329. Surely it's the poor.

  330. Who's given opportunities?

  331. Who's given options?

  332. Who's provided for?

  333. It's the poor.

  334. Do you see how God's community

  335. are to care for the poor?

  336. Or to do right by them?

  337. Or to have an eye for them?

  338. They care for the poor.

  339. The poor are in God's heart.

  340. So way number one,

  341. mark number one,

  342. the poor are loved.

  343. Mark number two,

  344. sex is honored.

  345. God calls his people

  346. to have a different sexual ethic

  347. from the nations,

  348. the peoples of the earth

  349. round about them.

  350. As God reaffirms

  351. that to engage in sexual activity

  352. outwith the good contours

  353. of a marriage between one man

  354. and one woman is sinful.

  355. And yes,

  356. homosexuality is mentioned here.

  357. Got to see it.

  358. But let's ensure that

  359. because of the times

  360. in which we happen to be existing

  361. at this moment,

  362. we're not so drawn to see it

  363. that we miss out on everything else

  364. that God is saying

  365. because he's got so much more

  366. to say in this regard,

  367. in this area.

  368. Because if you read it through,

  369. he's got stuff to say

  370. about adultery amongst his people,

  371. polygamy,

  372. incest,

  373. sex with animals,

  374. and uncovering another person's nakedness

  375. probably means just to sleep with them casually,

  376. could just mean looking at them lustfully.

  377. As God said,

  378. you will be different

  379. from the peoples round about

  380. in the way you think about sex.

  381. And I take it, friends,

  382. that we all need to feel the weight of that.

  383. And I'm very conscious

  384. that two things will be happening

  385. as I'm mentioning that.

  386. Number one

  387. is that the Holy Spirit,

  388. as he moves amongst us,

  389. will be challenging us

  390. in ways that we need to be different.

  391. The things that we need to repent,

  392. the things we need to say sorry for,

  393. the things that we need to stop doing

  394. and start doing.

  395. I'm also aware

  396. that the devil will be prowling around

  397. looking for people to devour.

  398. And maybe right now,

  399. even as I mentioned that,

  400. there's a lot of pain

  401. that's coming back to mind

  402. or mistakes

  403. or shame.

  404. And that's why I want us

  405. just at this point

  406. to come to John chapter 8

    John 8 chapter mention

  407. and marvel,

  408. all of us,

  409. because we have all fallen short here

  410. at some point in our lives,

  411. marvel at the grace of Jesus Christ.

  412. Marvel at what God is like

  413. as we see God in the flesh

  414. in his person.

  415. For all of us have failed here.

  416. The Pharisees,

  417. what do they do in John chapter 8?

    John 8 chapter mention

  418. They bring a woman

  419. who's been caught in adultery

  420. and it's almost like

  421. they bring her to Jesus

  422. and they gang up on her.

  423. I'm always reading that,

  424. thinking to myself,

  425. where is the guy?

  426. Right?

  427. It takes two to tangle.

  428. Where is the guy?

  429. They're not interested.

  430. I love how Jesus treats women

  431. with such dignity.

  432. He should meet them in the Gospels.

  433. What do they say about this woman?

  434. She has broken what?

  435. The law of Moses.

  436. They take Jesus right here.

  437. She is guilty.

  438. What are you going to do about it?

  439. What does he say?

  440. He says,

  441. let he who is without sin

  442. cast the first stone.

  443. And one by one,

  444. they start dropping off.

  445. Love it how it's the elders

  446. who start dropping off first

  447. as if to say,

  448. we know we cannot throw that stone.

  449. Jesus doesn't condone the woman

  450. for what she's done,

  451. but neither does he condemn her

  452. for what she's done.

  453. He meets her with grace

  454. and he says,

  455. sin no more.

  456. Sin no more.

  457. Change.

  458. Do you see, friends,

  459. repentance is always a response

  460. to Jesus,

  461. the grace that we find in him.

  462. It's almost as if Jesus

  463. steps into this woman's situation

  464. and says,

  465. yes, she deserves to die.

  466. We all deserve to die.

  467. I'm going to take her death.

  468. I'll take it.

  469. That's what he does

  470. as he goes to the cross.

  471. Those, all of us,

  472. who deserve to die,

  473. I'm going to die in their place.

  474. I'm going to die in their place.

  475. Friends, God's kindness

  476. is meant to lead us to repentance.

  477. This is Jesus.

  478. Feel his heart here in this moment.

  479. The heart of God

  480. for people to come

  481. to put their faith in him.

  482. He changed.

  483. And all that you see,

  484. if you look at chapter 18,

  485. all the different people

  486. and relationships

  487. that you get in Leviticus 18,

  488. this list of people

  489. who you are not to uncover

  490. their nakedness.

  491. There's that phrase.

  492. The reason

  493. is that these people

  494. belong to somebody else.

  495. Do you see it?

  496. Verse 16, chapter 18,

  497. for example,

  498. do not have sexual relations

  499. with your brother's wife

  500. that would dishonor

  501. your brother.

  502. In other words,

  503. there's other people

  504. involved here

  505. who are going to be hurt

  506. by your actions.

  507. People are not just

  508. your playthings

  509. to satisfy your appetites.

  510. People are image bearers

  511. of God's.

  512. And you need to understand

  513. that because of that,

  514. they are worthy

  515. of the greatest dignity

  516. and respect

  517. as you love your neighbor

  518. as yourself.

  519. Let me just say,

  520. that is the culture

  521. that we always want

  522. to be creating here.

  523. Right?

  524. Just a culture

  525. where we view people

  526. differently.

  527. Differently.

  528. Where we talk about

  529. the other sex

  530. differently.

  531. And as you think

  532. about everything

  533. that's going on

  534. in our world

  535. over the last number

  536. of months,

  537. friends,

  538. we should be setting

  539. the pace here

  540. in how we relate

  541. to one another

  542. as people.

  543. Setting the pace.

  544. Striving to create

  545. a safe place

  546. where people can come in

  547. and not be judged

  548. but can heal

  549. and be loved

  550. and know

  551. the grace

  552. of Jesus Christ.

  553. Where we can be honest

  554. with our struggles.

  555. Where we have a safe place

  556. to practice repentance

  557. as together

  558. we deny self,

  559. take up cross,

  560. and follow Jesus.

  561. God's community

  562. will be a place

  563. where sex

  564. is honoured.

  565. And Mark 3,

  566. and these will be

  567. a lot quicker,

  568. these two.

  569. Mark 3,

  570. God's community

  571. is a place

  572. where justice

  573. is done.

  574. Right?

  575. Did you hear it

  576. as Hannah read it?

  577. Do not steal.

  578. Do not defraud

  579. your neighbour.

  580. Don't cheat

  581. in your weights

  582. and your scales.

  583. Pay your labourers

  584. their wages.

  585. Verse 15,

  586. you shall not render

  587. an unjust judgment

  588. that benefits

  589. either the rich

  590. or the poor.

  591. In other words,

  592. God really cares

  593. that justice

  594. is done

  595. amongst his people.

  596. Why?

  597. Because again,

  598. it just reflects

  599. his character.

  600. He is a God

  601. of justice.

  602. And Mark number 4,

  603. real quick,

  604. the days are special.

  605. Days are special.

  606. Chapter 23

  607. and into 25,

  608. the times of year

  609. that are to be special

  610. to the Israelites.

  611. the Passover,

  612. the Sabbath,

  613. the festival of weeks,

  614. the day of atonement,

  615. these rhythms of life

  616. that God tells them

  617. to build into their calendar,

  618. many of which

  619. will only happen

  620. once they're in the land

  621. where they're going.

  622. These days are designed

  623. to help them remember

  624. who their God is

  625. and what he's done for them

  626. and to be able to pass it on

  627. to the next generation.

  628. This is who our God is.

  629. This is who he is.

  630. Right?

  631. One of the reasons,

  632. if you want an example,

  633. chapter 23,

  634. sorry we're jumping about here

  635. but it's the nature

  636. of the exercise.

  637. Chapter 23,

  638. verse 43.

  639. One of the reasons

  640. they are to celebrate

  641. the Feast of Booths,

  642. 23, 43.

  643. So your descendants

  644. will know

  645. that I had the Israelites

  646. live in temporary shelters

  647. when I brought them

  648. out of Egypt.

  649. I am the Lord your God.

  650. You picture that.

  651. You're celebrating

  652. that one together.

  653. Child,

  654. ask the parent,

  655. why are we doing this?

  656. Why are we living in a tent?

  657. What is going on?

  658. Because this is who our God is.

  659. This is what he's done for us.

  660. This is what happened.

  661. This is what he did.

  662. This is how good he is.

  663. Let's worship him

  664. and celebrate him together.

  665. You see,

  666. they're just built

  667. into the life

  668. of God's people,

  669. passing on to the next generation

  670. so that they don't forget

  671. this is who our God is.

  672. In chapters 26 and 27

  673. that kind of end the book here,

  674. chapter 26,

  675. God saying,

  676. I will bless you

  677. if you live a life

  678. of covenant faithfulness.

  679. You will be fruitful

  680. and multiply.

  681. There will be an abundance

  682. of grain,

  683. verse 12,

  684. chapter 26,

  685. and I will walk

  686. among you.

  687. Now,

  688. if you're on the ball,

  689. biblical theology,

  690. you'll feel there

  691. in that language,

  692. echoes of Eden.

  693. Yeah,

  694. I will walk among you.

  695. What was God doing

  696. in the garden?

  697. He was walking amongst them.

  698. Be fruitful and multiply.

  699. Again,

  700. you hear the echoes of Eden

  701. in the language.

  702. This is where God

  703. is taking his people.

  704. But you will incur

  705. the covenant curses

  706. if you don't.

  707. Most importantly,

  708. I think for the story,

  709. verse 33,

  710. God is saying,

  711. I will scatter you

  712. among the nations.

  713. I will expel you

  714. from the land

  715. where I am taking you

  716. just like I did

  717. the Canaanites

  718. because if you're

  719. going to live

  720. as my people,

  721. my place,

  722. you must be holy.

  723. And I think just as we

  724. maybe bring the chapters

  725. to a close,

  726. friends,

  727. we need to see

  728. how seriously

  729. God takes the holiness

  730. of his people.

  731. If you're going to

  732. represent me,

  733. you need to be holy.

  734. I remember when I was

  735. a lawyer,

  736. one of the clients

  737. that we had

  738. was an apple reseller.

  739. Not as in an apple,

  740. as in apple.

  741. Apple got in contact,

  742. I remember,

  743. and sent us

  744. this hugely detailed

  745. document of everything

  746. that they expected us

  747. to do if we were

  748. going to sell

  749. their products.

  750. Everything from the

  751. texture of the surfaces,

  752. the type of marble

  753. they had to be made of,

  754. the gaps between

  755. the products

  756. as you put them

  757. on display,

  758. and how the shop

  759. was to be set up

  760. and the lighting.

  761. I have never seen

  762. so much attention

  763. to detail in my life.

  764. But it is why

  765. when you go to

  766. an apple store,

  767. you will see the same

  768. layout all the way

  769. through.

  770. Because they are saying,

  771. if you are going to

  772. represent our brand,

  773. this is what we expect

  774. of you.

  775. And in the same way,

  776. friends,

  777. these chapters

  778. exclaim to us

  779. as we read about

  780. incident after incident

  781. of people just

  782. abusing God's holiness.

  783. And what happened

  784. to them,

  785. just how much it

  786. matters to a holy

  787. God,

  788. what kind of people

  789. represent him.

  790. because this God,

  791. the Lord,

  792. who is three times

  793. holy,

  794. he will not be

  795. mocked.

  796. He will not be

  797. mocked.

  798. And you want proof

  799. of that when Jesus

  800. turns up 2,000 odd

  801. years later?

  802. The tragedy is

  803. that Israel

  804. have swerved

  805. off the track

  806. so far

  807. that they are

  808. no longer

  809. being this

  810. holy people.

  811. You know,

  812. I never,

  813. you make these

  814. connections as you

  815. read scripture

  816. through.

  817. I'd never noticed

  818. before in Mark 11.

  819. Mark 11.

  820. You know,

  821. Jesus is into the

  822. temple and he's

  823. flipping the tables.

  824. What's one of the

  825. things that he sees

  826. there?

  827. What's one of the

  828. things that causes

  829. such holy anger

  830. in his heart?

  831. What are the people

  832. selling?

  833. They're selling

  834. doves.

  835. What is it in

  836. Leviticus we learned

  837. at the start?

  838. What do the poor

  839. people who can't

  840. afford a bull,

  841. what did they come

  842. bringing for their

  843. sacrifice?

  844. They bring a dove

  845. or a pigeon,

  846. but a dove.

  847. And so here are the

  848. people in the

  849. temple selling

  850. these things

  851. and trying to

  852. make money.

  853. And who are they

  854. making money

  855. off?

  856. The poor.

  857. Do you see it?

  858. And there's money

  859. changers there as

  860. well.

  861. People from

  862. outside coming in

  863. to worship God

  864. need to change

  865. their currency.

  866. Again,

  867. probably people

  868. making money

  869. off of that.

  870. Who are they

  871. exploiting?

  872. The foreigner.

  873. The outsider

  874. who's coming in

  875. to worship the Lord.

  876. Do you see how

  877. Israel at this

  878. point have gone

  879. so far,

  880. so far off

  881. the tracks?

  882. Matthew 5,

  883. the Pharisees

  884. are teaching

  885. that we're

  886. keeping the

  887. law because

  888. we are not

  889. committing adultery.

  890. What does

  891. Jesus say in

  892. the Sermon on

  893. the Mount?

  894. Yeah, but you're

  895. burning with lust

  896. in your hearts.

  897. They say we're

  898. keeping the law

  899. because we are

  900. not murdering.

  901. What does

  902. Jesus say?

  903. Yeah, but anger

  904. rages inside of

  905. you.

  906. You've missed it.

  907. You've missed the

  908. point.

  909. I love the analogy

  910. that Jesus uses for

  911. them.

  912. What does he call

  913. them?

  914. He calls them

  915. whitewashed tombs.

  916. I just picture a

  917. cave where the

  918. body would go

  919. and they've

  920. painted it white,

  921. given the

  922. impression of

  923. life, but

  924. inside is

  925. death.

  926. Whitewashed

  927. tombs.

  928. I love how,

  929. and we should

  930. see this,

  931. that Jesus has

  932. some of his

  933. strongest words

  934. for religious

  935. hypocrites.

  936. And he has

  937. some of his

  938. sweetest words

  939. for those who

  940. are religious

  941. failures.

  942. When he says,

  943. do not think

  944. that I have

  945. come to abolish

  946. the law of

  947. the prophets.

  948. I have not

  949. come to

  950. abolish them,

  951. I have come

  952. to fulfill

  953. them.

  954. Now, what

  955. does he

  956. mean?

  957. Fulfill them.

  958. What does he

  959. mean?

  960. How do we

  961. understand the

  962. law?

  963. What are we

  964. supposed to

  965. do with

  966. this?

  967. Well,

  968. commentators

  969. generally agree

  970. that you can

  971. divide the

  972. law into

  973. three categories.

  974. You've got the

  975. ceremonial laws,

  976. the rituals that

  977. Israel were told

  978. to do.

  979. So, sin

  980. offerings, etc.

  981. The kind of

  982. things that make

  983. you unclean and

  984. clean, like

  985. eating prawns,

  986. all those kind

  987. of things,

  988. right?

  989. Which were all

  990. pointing to

  991. Jesus and his

  992. work on the

  993. cross, what he

  994. would do.

  995. Dies on the

  996. cross, atones

  997. for our sin.

  998. He is the

  999. atoning sacrifice

  1000. that we need.

  1001. He's the one

  1002. that can make us

  1003. clean.

  1004. And therefore,

  1005. because we stand

  1006. at this point in

  1007. the story, we

  1008. don't need to go

  1009. back.

  1010. Now that we've

  1011. got the full

  1012. picture, we

  1013. don't go back

  1014. to the play

  1015. thing.

  1016. We don't go

  1017. back the way.

  1018. And the

  1019. civil law, the

  1020. things that

  1021. specifically apply

  1022. to the nation

  1023. of Israel,

  1024. particularly when

  1025. they're in the

  1026. land, keeping

  1027. up special

  1028. days, etc.

  1029. All these

  1030. things fulfilled

  1031. in Jesus.

  1032. Paul in the

  1033. New Testament

  1034. talks about

  1035. Christ as our

  1036. Passover lamb.

  1037. Jesus is the

  1038. one who gives

  1039. us rest.

  1040. That is

  1041. everything the

  1042. Sabbath was

  1043. pointing to.

  1044. And moreover,

  1045. God's people are

  1046. no longer one

  1047. nation in the

  1048. land.

  1049. We are now

  1050. people from

  1051. every nation.

  1052. Every nation.

  1053. But friends, the

  1054. third category is a

  1055. lot more

  1056. interesting.

  1057. It's the moral

  1058. law.

  1059. In other words,

  1060. this is God's

  1061. heart.

  1062. And not only do

  1063. we see so much

  1064. of this picked up

  1065. in the New

  1066. Testament, all

  1067. these things that

  1068. God requires us

  1069. to do, he wants

1070. us to do as his

  1071. people, but there's

  1072. another way that

  1073. Jesus fulfills the

  1074. law.

  1075. And if you want

  1076. to see what a

  1077. holy life

  1078. looks like, if

  1079. you want to see

  1080. what a life of

  1081. joyful obedience

  1082. and glad

  1083. submission to

  1084. God the Father

  1085. looks like, if

  1086. you want to see

  1087. what a perfect

  1088. law keeper looks

  1089. like, whether

  1090. that makes you

  1091. sad or happy,

  1092. look at Jesus.

  1093. Look at Jesus.

  1094. And in that

  1095. sense, you see

  1096. how he has

  1097. fulfilled the

  1098. law.

  1099. It's often what

  1100. people say about

  1101. Christianity, isn't

  1102. it?

  1103. It's just rules,

  1104. rules, rules.

  1105. You know, if I

  1106. wanted life in a

  1107. straitjacket, I

  1108. don't want it,

  1109. thank you very

  1110. much.

  1111. I remember

  1112. reading C.S.

  1113. Lewis's book

  1114. years ago, his

  1115. spiritual autobiography,

  1116. it's called

  1117. Mere Christianity.

  1118. He talked about

  1119. before he was a

  1120. Christian, he used

  1121. to view God as

  1122. a grand

  1123. interferer in

  1124. his life.

  1125. I viewed God

  1126. like that before I

  1127. became a Christian.

  1128. He was like a

  1129. referee.

1130. He was just out to

  1131. spoil my fun.

  1132. It would be so

  1133. much better if you

  1134. weren't there.

  1135. But that's not

  1136. what you see when

  1137. you look at

  1138. Jesus.

  1139. Not only is he

  1140. the perfect law

  1141. keeper whose

  1142. righteousness we

  1143. need, we can't

  1144. do this, he did

  1145. it.

1146. But if to be a

  1147. Christian, if to be

  1148. chosen by God the

  1149. Father, and to

  1150. have Jesus formed

  1151. in us through the

  1152. power of the

  1153. Spirit, friends,

  1154. and we should

  1155. begin to look more

  1156. like him.

  1157. You see, the

  1158. gospel of free

  1159. grace is never

  1160. about turning over

  1161. a new leaf and

  1162. saying, I'm going

  1163. to try harder.

  1164. It's about God by

  1165. his grace taking

  1166. out our heart of

  1167. stone and putting

1168. in a new heart of

  1169. flesh.

  1170. It's about being

  1171. given a new heart.

  1172. And therefore,

  1173. friends, if you

  1174. bring those together,

  1175. holiness should be

  1176. the desire of

  1177. every child of

  1178. God.

  1179. In the words of

  1180. William Cowper,

1181. to see the law by

  1182. Christ fulfilled,

  1183. and hear his

  1184. pardoning voice,

  1185. changes a slave

  1186. into a child,

  1187. and duty into

  1188. choice.

  1189. This is a privilege

  1190. to worship and

  1191. follow Jesus.

  1192. And so the

  1193. challenge to us

  1194. today as we

  1195. bring this to a

  1196. close as God's

  1197. people is are we

  1198. living in such a

  1199. way that the God

  1200. we claim to

  1201. worship attracts

  1202. admiration from the

  1203. world around us?

  1204. And I think back

  1205. just where we

  1206. started to spot

  1207. the difference.

  1208. Spot the

  1209. difference.

  1210. Friends, how are

  1211. we doing it

  1212. being different?

  1213. How are we

  1214. doing it being

  1215. different?

  1216. I remember hearing

  1217. a story of a guy

  1218. called Mark.

  1219. Mark got

  1220. baptized at

  1221. Charlotte Chapel

  1222. back in 2017,

1223. and how he came to

  1224. hear about Jesus

  1225. was simply that

  1226. somebody new

  1227. started at his

  1228. work.

  1229. She was called

  1230. Kirsty, and in

  1231. her Mark saw

  1232. something different.

1233. And he said this in

  1234. his testimony, because

  1235. I've got a transcript

  1236. of it.

  1237. He said,

  1238. she brought our

  1239. loving God to my

  1240. attention, and my

  1241. interest was

  1242. piqued.

1243. And so the two of

  1244. them get chatting,

  1245. they start reading

  1246. the Bible together,

  1247. Mark encounters

  1248. Jesus, he's

  1249. convicted of his

  1250. sin, and he

  1251. finds forgiveness

  1252. in life in

  1253. Jesus.

  1254. Why did it

  1255. start?

  1256. Because Mark saw

  1257. something different.

  1258. There's always God's

  1259. plan for holiness,

  1260. that we would make

  1261. him attractive to

  1262. the world.

  1263. Friends, how are we

  1264. doing at being

  1265. different?

  1266. Here is the call

  1267. that this holy God

  1268. makes on our lives,

  1269. as we respond to

  1270. his grace, to

  1271. be holy, to be

  1272. holy.

  1273. Holiness is

  1274. something that

  1275. we're called to

  1276. take in, and

  1277. holiness is

  1278. something that

  1279. we're called to

  1280. live out.

  1281. Let's pray

  1282. together.

  1283. Heavenly Father,

  1284. we just thank you

  1285. so much for your

  1286. grace.

  1287. Lord, where would

  1288. we be without your

  1289. great love for us?

  1290. And so we just

  1291. thank you for your

  1292. precious word,

  1293. Lord, and everything

  1294. that we've learned

  1295. this morning.

  1296. And I pray

  1297. particularly, Father,

  1298. for those who

  1299. are perhaps

  1300. struggling with

  1301. something that

  1302. we've read this

  1303. morning.

  1304. Or, Father, in

  1305. their heart are

  1306. feeling perhaps a

  1307. sense of guilt.

  1308. Lord, would you

  1309. just remind them

  1310. particularly, Father,

  1311. of your love for

  1312. them, of your

  1313. Son who gave your

  1314. life to save

  1315. them.

  1316. Father, we just

  1317. thank you for your

  1318. wonderful love for

  1319. us.

  1320. We thank you just

  1321. for this last

  1322. number of weeks

  1323. we were able to

  1324. study this book of

  1325. the Bible called

  1326. Leviticus and

  1327. seeing its

  1328. relevance and its

  1329. challenge for us

  1330. today.

  1331. And so, Father,

  1332. we pray that as

  1333. we leave this,

  1334. that this church,

  1335. this people that

  1336. gather here, would

  1337. continue to be a

  1338. light to the

  1339. nations, a city on

  1340. the hill, a

  1341. community of salt

  1342. that makes the

  1343. Lord Jesus

  1344. attractive to the

  1345. world.

  1346. Father, help us,

  1347. we pray, in Jesus'

  1348. worthy and precious

  1349. name.

  1350. Amen.
