  1. Thanks very much, Al. Good evening, everyone.

  2. As Al and others have said, it is a real privilege to be back with a smallish but real congregation in the church this evening.

  3. I had the privilege at the end of the first lockdown of speaking on the Sunday evening we came back,

  4. and I'm delighted to be doing it again, although I hope there won't be a third time that I'll be saying that.

  5. But great Dota Deas, I think for all of us, it makes us look forward to a better day.

  6. Yes, it's good for some of us to be able to meet together tonight, and for others to be able to join us on Zoom.

  7. But one day, we'll all be together as a church in the building.

  8. One day, we won't be wearing face coverings and socially distancing.

  9. One day, we'll be able to sing heartily rather than just listen to songs.

  10. And on that day, we'll be able to greet one another with a hug or a handshake, whichever we prefer.

  11. We'll be able to be reunited with people who we haven't seen for many months, family and friends.

  12. And we'll be able to praise God as we look back at how he has taken us through the time of crisis,

  13. and as we look forward to the future.

  14. Life will be back to normal.

  15. But maybe on that day, we will then look forward to another day.

  16. A day when the Lord Jesus will return.

  17. A day when we'll go to be with him,

  18. and the troubles and trials of this life will be behind us.

  19. A day when there will be justice done on the earth.

  20. And in that day, we'll rejoice in our Savior and our salvation.

  21. In that day, we'll gaze on the face of our Savior,

  22. and be able fully to express our appreciation of him.

  23. In that day, things will really be back to how they should be.

  24. And I wonder if we look forward to that day,

  25. with as much excitement as we look forward to the day

  26. when life will return to what is called normal in our society.

  27. Are we really thrilled at the thought of the Lord Jesus returning,

  28. and going to be with him?

  29. So there's a day coming when things will be better,

  30. when we won't be so affected by the virus,

  31. and we'll be living life as we used to live it.

  32. But how much better that there's a day coming

  33. when everything will be returned to the way it should be,

  34. and when Jesus is seen to reign.

  35. And who knows?

  36. Maybe the day of Jesus' return will be sooner

  37. than the day when we're free from the virus.

  38. It could be any time.

  39. Why am I saying that?

  40. Because when we come to Isaiah chapters 11 and 12,

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  41. we have exactly the same situation.

  42. You may have noticed in the reading

  43. that several times it said,

  44. in that day.

  45. And it said it at key points in the passage.

  46. If you have your Bible in front of you,

  47. and you have a Bible that indents poetry,

  48. you may notice that verses 10 and 11 of chapter 11

  49. are actually prose.

  50. And actually, Archie told us a couple of weeks ago

  51. that when we see prose in the middle of poetry,

  52. as there was in his passage too,

  53. that is something that we should be paying

  54. particular attention to.

  55. So Isaiah is pointing out that

  56. that day is really important.

  57. And then in chapter 12,

  58. in verses 1 and 4,

  59. he talks about in that day

  60. and what people will say.

  61. Again, he's saying,

  62. here's something we look forward to,

  63. and it's going to be really important,

  64. and here's what's going to happen.

  65. And as with our illustration

  66. from current situation,

  67. there are the two perspectives

  68. of what that day means.

  69. There is a day in the time of Isaiah,

  70. actually probably a couple of hundred years later,

  71. but there is a day in the relatively short term

  72. when much of the prophecy

  73. in these chapters was fulfilled,

  74. particularly when the Israelites returned

  75. from their exile.

  76. But even then,

  77. even looking back on that,

  78. as they read Isaiah 11 and 12,

  79. they must have thought,

  80. is that it?

  81. Is there not more to it than this?

  82. It doesn't all seem to have been fulfilled.

  83. And of course,

  84. when we look at it,

  85. we see particularly

  86. the day when the Lord Jesus will return,

  87. and the day when everything

  88. will be under his rule,

  89. and everything will be perfect.

  90. So the perspective here,

  91. the ultimate perspective here,

  92. is exactly the same

  93. as the ultimate perspective

  94. I was talking about

  95. a few minutes ago.

  96. And the bulk of what we want to learn

  97. from this passage

  98. is looking forward

  99. to the Lord's return

  100. and what will happen then.

  101. But there is an immediate context,

  102. and let me just take a short time

  103. to talk about that.

  104. So you remember,

  105. in this section of Isaiah,

  106. what's happening is

  107. you've got the nation of Israel,

  108. the northern kingdom,

  109. the nation of Judah,

  110. the southern kingdom,

  111. now separate since the days

  112. of Rehoboam and Jeroboam.

  113. And round about,

  114. you've got quite a number

  115. of other small nation states.

  116. So you've got Aram,

  117. and you've got Philistine,

  118. and you've got Moab,

  119. and a number of others.

  120. And they're all relatively

  121. insignificant countries

  122. in terms of the world of their day.

  123. They get involved in skirmishes

  124. with each other,

  125. but they weren't nations

  126. at that time of great significance.

  127. Below them to the south,

  128. you have Egypt,

  129. but more significantly,

  130. to the northeast of these nations,

  131. you have the great nation of Assyria.

  132. And Assyria was a really scary superpower

  133. in its day.

  134. It was one of the most vicious powers

  135. in human history.

  136. It was treacherous,

  137. it was cruel,

  138. and it overran countries

  139. with no thought at all

  140. for their good.

  141. And Assyria had become a big threat

  142. to all these small nations

  143. sitting in the Middle East.

  144. And they had a choice to make.

  145. So Israel and Aram,

  146. seeing Assyria on their borders,

  147. they joined together,

  148. they joined forces,

  149. and they tried to raise Israel,

  150. tried to raise Judah rather,

  151. to join them.

  152. It seems that Judah said no,

  153. and so there was a bit of a skirmish

  154. between Israel and Aram and Judah.

  155. And in that situation,

  156. as the king of Judah,

  157. as Ahaz wondered what to do,

  158. Isaiah said to him,

  159. trust God.

  160. Don't enter into a pact with Assyria.

  161. Trust God for the future.

  162. And Ahaz didn't listen to him,

  163. and there are consequences in that

  164. for Judah,

  165. which are listed.

  166. And at the same time,

  167. because of Israel's sin,

  168. the northern country of Israel's sin,

  169. there was a judgment from God on it.

  170. So chapters 7 to 11 are about that,

  171. and we just put a little picture up.

  172. And this is kind of summary

  173. of where we've been

  174. over the last few weeks.

  175. So it's bookended by chapter 6,

  176. which is the call of Isaiah

  177. when the Lord appeared to him,

  178. and chapter 12,

  179. which is a celebration

  180. we'll look at later on.

  181. And then there's a section

  182. which is particularly

  183. about the kingdom of Judah,

  184. and there's one that's particularly

  185. about the kingdom of Israel.

  186. And we can say both of them

  187. have broadly the same pattern.

  188. There's a challenge,

  189. a decision to be made.

  190. Following on from that decision,

  191. there's a judgment from God,

  192. a judgment against Judah,

  193. a judgment against Israel,

  194. a judgment also against Assyria,

  195. described as God's tool.

  196. There's a remnant.

  197. There is a small number of people

  198. who don't turn away from God

  199. and provide hope for the future.

  200. And then there is

  201. the forward-looking ending of it.

  202. So chapter 9 is the chapter

  203. we're all so familiar with

  204. that points to the birth

  205. of the Lord Jesus,

  206. unto us a child is born,

  207. unto us a son is given.

  208. And chapter 11 was drawn

  209. at the bulk of the passage

  210. that we're looking at this evening.

  211. It looks forward,

  212. as I said, that bit further,

  213. and it looks forward

  214. especially to the return

  215. of the Lord Jesus.

  216. But the immediate context,

  217. what people would look at

  218. and perhaps in the centuries

  219. to come would take from it

  220. as having happened,

  221. was that after the exile,

  222. after Israel was taken over

  223. by the Assyrians

  224. and Judah by the Babylonians

  225. and the people were taken away,

  226. there would be a return

  227. which came under Ezra and Nehemiah,

  228. and there would be

  229. a partial fulfillment

  230. of what is said here.

  231. People were able to live

  232. in peace in the land

  233. and to, again,

  234. worship God as they wished to,

  235. but only a partial fulfillment.

  236. So let's spend the rest of the time

  237. thinking about what this has to say to us

  238. as we look forward from now.

  239. What is it that is the ultimate fulfillment

  240. of the prophecy here?

  241. And four things about that

  242. that I think we learn

  243. from these chapters.

  244. In that day, first of all,

  245. there will be a rain.

  246. So this is chapter 11

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  247. and the first five verses.

  248. It is about a king

  249. who is filled with God's spirit

  250. and who rules justly.

  251. And of course,

  252. it's about the Lord Jesus.

  253. So let's have a look at that

  254. and draw some thoughts from it.

  255. Chapter 11 and verse 1 says,

  256. a shoot will come up

  257. from the stump of Jesse.

  258. Now, if you remember way back

  259. to chapter 6,

  260. in chapter 6,

  261. because of the sins of the people,

  262. God had prophesied,

  263. Isaiah prophesied from God

  264. that the tree would be cut down.

  265. The tree that was Israel

  266. or Judah would be cut down

  267. and there would only be

  268. a stump left.

  269. Isaiah says,

  270. looking forward,

  271. that stump will produce a shoot.

  272. Just a shoot,

  273. but a shoot that will grow

  274. to be a branch

  275. and to bear fruit.

  276. And that fruit will come

  277. from the stump of Jesse.

  278. Now, Jesse, of course,

  279. was the father of King David

  280. in the Old Testament.

  281. Interestingly,

  282. he says from Jesse

  283. rather than David,

  284. perhaps something to do

  285. with the obscurity

  286. from which the Lord Jesus

  287. would come,

  288. perhaps also pointing to him

  289. being the second David,

  290. the great David's greater son.

  291. But Isaiah is saying

  292. there will be in the future

  293. a shoot that becomes a branch

  294. that bears fruit.

  295. And this person,

  296. this shoot,

  297. which will ultimately be the king,

  298. it will have some

  299. very special qualities.

  300. So verse 2,

  301. the spirit of the Lord

  302. will rest on him,

  303. the spirit of wisdom

  304. and of understanding,

  305. the spirit of counsel

  306. and of power,

  307. the spirit of knowledge

  308. and the fear of God,

  309. and he will delight

  310. in the fear of the Lord.

  311. He could perfectly

  312. be describing the Lord Jesus,

  313. couldn't he?

  314. Of course,

  315. with the eye of prophecy,

  316. he is.

  317. the one on whom

  318. the spirit of God

  319. came to rest

  320. at his baptism,

  321. but throughout his life

  322. who was filled

  323. with the spirit

  324. and who displayed

  325. the qualities

  326. that are those

  327. of someone

  328. who is truly

  329. spiritual.

  330. So Isaiah talks about

  331. a spirit of wisdom

  332. and understanding.

  333. So that is being able

  334. to see the world

  335. around about us

  336. and to see it

  337. for what it is

  338. and to know

  339. what to do

  340. in every situation.

  341. And is that not exactly

  342. what we see

  343. in the Lord Jesus?

  344. Whoever came to him,

  345. he could discern

  346. what was in their hearts,

  347. he could discern

  348. their needs,

  349. and he could act

  350. in a way

  351. that was for

  352. their good.

  353. For some people,

  354. it was to heal them

  355. physically.

  356. For some people,

  357. it was to assure them

  358. of salvation

  359. and of forgiveness.

  360. For some people,

  361. it was to condemn them

  362. because of their hypocrisy.

  363. But in every situation,

  364. the Lord Jesus,

  365. through the spirit,

  366. was able to discern

  367. what was the right thing

  368. to do

  369. and to do it.

  370. Spirit of counsel

  371. and of power,

  372. which is the next thing

  373. described here,

  374. would typically be

  375. the kind of expression

  376. that was used

  377. in terms of

  378. a king

  379. and managing

  380. the affairs

  381. of state.

  382. So it is

  383. understanding again,

  384. but understanding

  385. the big picture,

  386. being able to see

  387. everything

  388. in its context

  389. and what needs

  390. to be done

  391. and having the power

  392. to do it.

  393. And again,

  394. is that not exactly

  395. what we see

  396. in the Lord Jesus,

  397. both in his life

  398. on earth

  399. and now

  400. as he is our advocate

  401. in heaven

  402. with the Father.

  403. He understands

  404. our situation.

  405. He understands

  406. our world.

  407. He is able to

  408. guide us

  409. as we seek

  410. to navigate

  411. through it.

  412. And he has

  413. had in his life

  414. and has now

  415. the power

  416. to make a real

  417. difference

  418. in every situation.

  419. And of course,

  420. ultimately,

  421. as he went

  422. to the cross,

  423. he had the

  424. understanding

  425. and the wisdom

  426. to know

  427. that that was

  428. the only way

  429. of salvation

  430. for us.

  431. And he had

  432. the power,

  433. he had the

  434. desire

  435. and the ability

  436. to go to the cross

  437. and because

  438. he was sinless

  439. to take our sins

  440. on himself

  441. and to emerge

  442. victorious,

  443. to rise again

  444. on the third day.

  445. The spirit of wisdom

  446. and understanding,

  447. the spirit of counsel

  448. and power,

  449. and then thirdly,

  450. as the spirit

  451. of knowledge

  452. and of the fear

  453. of the Lord.

  454. So the Lord Jesus

  455. had a perfect knowledge

  456. in every situation.

  457. Not head knowledge

  458. really particularly

  459. being talked about here

  460. although that comes

  461. into it.

  462. It is the knowledge

  463. that comes from

  464. being able to see things

  465. the way they are

  466. and being able

  467. to act on them.

  468. And particularly

  469. knowing God

  470. and fearing him.

  471. Fear, of course,

  472. not being terror

  473. in this context.

  474. It is respect

  475. and reverence

  476. for God.

  477. And that is the description

  478. of the Lord Jesus.

  479. I wonder how well

  480. it describes us.

  481. We all have

  482. the spirit

  483. of the Lord.

  484. Unlike

  485. people in the Old Testament

  486. where the spirit

  487. would come and rest

  488. on someone for a while

  489. to do a specific task

  490. and would then

  491. not be with them.

  492. We have the spirit,

  493. the Holy Spirit

  494. in our hearts,

  495. in our lives,

  496. guiding,

  497. leading,

  498. directing us,

  499. helping us to live

  500. the way that

  501. Jesus does.

  502. Jesus did

  503. and Jesus would

  504. want us to.

  505. And do we then

  506. display wisdom

  507. and understanding,

  508. counsel, power,

  509. knowledge,

  510. and fear

  511. of the Lord?

  512. And then verses

  513. 3 to 5

  514. talks about

  515. what this shoot

  516. will do,

  517. what this king

  518. who is coming

  519. will do.

  520. And it is a message

  521. of judgment

  522. but of righteousness

  523. and of justice.

  524. Verse 5,

  525. I think,

  526. is key.

  527. Righteousness

  528. will be his belt

  529. and faithfulness

  530. the sash

  531. round his waist.

  532. The things,

  533. if you like,

  534. that hold him together,

  535. that make him complete

  536. are righteousness

  537. and faithfulness.

  538. Doing what is right,

  539. helping others

  540. to do what is right,

  541. enforcing justice

  542. where necessary,

  543. but always being

  544. faithful to God

  545. and to his word.

  546. This is the king

  547. that Isaiah

  548. is able to look

  549. forward to.

  550. This is the one

  551. who ultimately

  552. will reign.

  553. and this is the one

  554. who is our saviour

  555. and our lord

  556. and we should be

  557. serving him

  558. and seeking

  559. to follow

  560. his example.

  561. Him says,

  562. Sing we the king

  563. who is coming

  564. to reign.

  565. Glory to Jesus,

  566. the lamb

  567. that was slain.

  568. Righteousness,

  569. peace,

  570. then his empire

  571. shall bring.

  572. Joy to the nations

  573. when Jesus

  574. is king.

  575. So we look forward

  576. to the day

  577. when Jesus

  578. is seen to reign

  579. and restore

  580. righteousness

  581. and justice

  582. in our world.

  583. Let's move on though

  584. and look at

  585. the next few verses

  586. from verse 6

  587. to verse 9.

  588. And I've called

  589. these restoration.

  590. It is the return

  591. of creation

  592. to what it

  593. should be.

  594. Now like a lot

  595. of prophecy,

  596. we have a bit

  597. of a dilemma

  598. with these verses.

  599. Are we to take

  600. them literally

  601. or not?

  602. So will it

  603. really be the case

  604. that lions

  605. will start

  606. to eat straw

  607. rather than meat?

  608. Now it's possible,

  609. but it would require

  610. quite big

  611. biological changes.

  612. Obviously God

  613. could well do,

  614. but it may be

  615. that what

  616. the writer

  617. here is looking

  618. at,

  619. the prophecy

  620. here,

  621. is as much

  622. figurative

  623. as literal.

  624. That is,

  625. looking forward

  626. to a day

  627. when those

  628. who are strong,

  629. when those

  630. who like

  631. to exert

  632. their authority,

  633. have that

  634. taken away

  635. from them

  636. and they are

  637. brought down

  638. to the same

  639. kind of level

  640. as those

  641. who are weak

  642. and those

  643. who might seem

  644. helpless.

  645. So in terms

  646. of the world

  647. of Isaiah's day,

  648. it would be

  649. Israel and Judah

  650. having the same

  651. kind of strength

  652. and the same

  653. kind of relationship

  654. that Assyria did

  655. or Babylon would

  656. or that Egypt did.

  657. The big countries

  658. and the little countries

  659. being able to live

  660. at peace together.

  661. Now maybe that,

  662. or it's maybe

  663. to be taken literally

  664. if you two think

  665. that through

  666. for yourself.

  667. But the key thing is

  668. it is a world

  669. where creation

  670. has been restored

  671. to the way

  672. it should be.

  673. Where everything

  674. is peaceful

  675. and there is not

  676. a dogfight

  677. going on

  678. and everyone

  679. trying to get

  680. their own way.

  681. Where a little child

  682. can lead them.

  683. I think the contrast

  684. is between

  685. a great warrior king

  686. going out to battle

  687. and a little child

  688. being able to lead.

  689. Where there is no fear.

  690. Where the young child

  691. can put his hand

  692. into the nest

  693. of vipers

  694. and not worry

  695. about it.

  696. And how can this

  697. come about?

  698. What are the circumstances

  699. that are required

  700. for that?

  701. Well it's in verse 9

  702. isn't it?

  703. They will neither harm

  704. nor destroy

  705. on all my holy mountain

  706. for the earth

  707. will be full

  708. of the knowledge

  709. of the Lord

  710. as the waters

  711. cover the sea.

  712. How do the waters

  713. cover the sea?

  714. They cover it completely.

  715. You don't have

  716. bits of sea

  717. and then there's

  718. a bit of dry land

  719. and then there's

  720. another bit of sea

  721. and that is not

  722. what we would

  723. normally expect.

  724. The sea is full

  725. of water

  726. everywhere.

  727. And the prophet

  728. is saying here

  729. one day

  730. the earth

  731. will be full

  732. of the knowledge

  733. of God

  734. in that way.

  735. Not head knowledge

  736. not just knowing

  737. the facts about God

  738. but knowing God

  739. and seeking

  740. to do his will

  741. and to follow

  742. in his good purposes.

  743. One day

  744. everything will change

  745. and a world

  746. where there is

  747. very little knowledge

  748. of God now.

  749. A world where

  750. most people

  751. have no interest

  752. in God

  753. or in eternity.

  754. One day

  755. it will all be different

  756. and everyone

  757. will know

  758. that Jesus

  759. is Lord.

  760. Everyone will know

  761. that we have

  762. a just

  763. and a righteous

  764. God

  765. and creation

  766. will be back

  767. as it should have been

  768. if sin hadn't

  769. entered in it.

  770. Creation

  771. will be

  772. restored.

  773. Let me continue

  774. my hymn.

  775. Knowledge and fear

  776. of the Lord

  777. then shall be

  778. as the deep waters

  779. that cover the sea

  780. all things

  781. shall be

  782. in the splendor

  783. of spring

  784. and all harmonious

  785. when Jesus

  786. is King.

  787. restoration.

  788. Third thing

  789. we look at

  790. I've put under

  791. the heading

  792. of return.

  793. God's people

  794. are reunited.

  795. Interesting

  796. as we come

  797. to verse 10

  798. in verse 1

  799. we notice

  800. that there was

  801. a shoot

  802. coming from

  803. the stump

  804. of Jesse.

  805. In verse 10

  806. it talks about

  807. the root

  808. of Jesse.

  809. Now the root

  810. it needs to be there

  811. for a long time

  812. before the shoot

  813. can come up

  814. or before the tree

  815. can be established

  816. doesn't it?

  817. So we have this

  818. curious paradox

  819. which we can

  820. begin to understand

  821. now

  822. that the Lord

  823. Jesus

  824. who was great

  825. David's greater

  826. son

  827. also was the one

  828. who was there

  829. before David

  830. or before Abraham

  831. or before anything

  832. else existed.

  833. He is the one

  834. who is the root

  835. the source

  836. of everything

  837. in our lives.

  838. and he will

  839. be the banner

  840. says Isaiah

  841. that will attract

  842. people to him

  843. and that will

  844. bring them

  845. all together.

  846. If you're following

  847. on in verse 11

  848. there's a list

  849. of different places

  850. and nationalities

  851. there.

  852. The idea I think

  853. is just from

  854. every corner

  855. of the world.

  856. Some are east

  857. some are west

  858. some are north

  859. some are south

  860. God's people

  861. are being brought

  862. back

  863. from everywhere.

  864. these verses

  865. I think there are

  866. quite a lot of

  867. echoes of the

  868. exodus from Egypt

  869. and of God's

  870. people for the

  871. first time

  872. being brought

  873. to Israel

  874. and saying

  875. this will happen

  876. again a second

  877. time.

  878. That God's people

  879. who have been

  880. removed from

  881. their land

  882. will be brought

  883. back.

  884. Now as I say

  885. it's probably

  886. in the shortish

  887. term referring

  888. to the return

  889. from exile

  890. from Babylon.

  891. You might also

  892. want to depending

  893. on how you

  894. view things

  895. seeing it

  896. the return

  897. of the Jews

  898. to Israel

  899. in the middle

  900. of the 20th

  901. century

  902. something which

  903. people would

  904. never have

  905. forecast in

  906. previous years

  907. but wonderfully

  908. happened.

  909. But particularly

  910. I think it looks

  911. forward to the

  912. day when all

  913. God's people

  914. will be together

  915. united under

  916. the Lord Jesus.

  917. That those who

  918. were there in

  919. the first century

  920. BC when the

  921. Lord was on

  922. earth, those

  923. who have trusted

  924. him since,

  925. and the saints

  926. from Old

  927. Testament days

  928. who had their

  929. trust in God

  930. will all be

  931. united and

  932. will be together

  933. singing the

  934. praise of the

  935. Lord Jesus.

  936. All separation

  937. is gone.

  938. You may have

  939. noticed the end

  940. of chapter 11

  941. that the prophet

  942. talks about the

  943. seas drying up,

  944. the Euphrates

  945. and the Red Sea

  946. and so on,

  947. and the picture

  948. there of just

  949. everything that

  950. separates being

  951. removed.

  952. See in the Bible

  953. tends to talk

  954. about separation.

  955. So everything

  956. that would stop

  957. us being together

  958. as God's people

  959. is removed and

  960. we're all united

  961. and we're all

  962. together with

  963. the Lord who

  964. loved us and

  965. who died for

  966. us.

  967. And what a day

  968. that should be

  969. as we look

  970. forward to it

  971. when we're with

  972. the Lord and

  973. we're with all

  974. the saints from

  975. down the ages.

  976. All shall be

  977. well in this

  978. kingdom of

  979. priests.

  980. Freedom shall

  981. flourish and

  982. wisdom increase.

  983. Foe shall

  984. be friend when

  985. his triumph

  986. we sing.

  987. Sword shall

  988. be sickle when

  989. Jesus is

  990. king.

  991. And these

  992. skirmishes

  993. talked about

  994. between Israel

  995. and Judah

  996. and the other

  997. nation

  998. dragged about.

  999. They'll be

  1000. behind because

  1001. everyone who

  1002. knows the

  1003. Lord will be

  1004. brought together.

  1005. And finally

  1006. let's have a

  1007. look at

  1008. chapter 12.

  1009. So chapter

  1010. 12 as I've

  1011. said is one

  1012. of the

  1013. bookends of

  1014. the section

  1015. of Isaiah

  1016. I've been

  1017. looking at

  1018. from chapter

  1019. 6 to

  1020. chapter 12.

  1021. And it's a

  1022. song of

  1023. praise to

  1024. God.

  1025. Actually it's

  1026. two songs

  1027. of praise to

  1028. God.

  1029. But you've

  1030. noticed that

  1031. verse 1

  1032. says in

  1033. that day

  1034. you will

  1035. say and

  1036. verse 4

  1037. also says

  1038. in that

  1039. day you

  1040. will say.

  1041. What you

  1042. don't get in

  1043. the modern

  1044. translations but

  1045. would get in

  1046. the very old

  1047. ones is that

  1048. in verse 1

  1049. the you is

  1050. singular so it

  1051. would be thou in

  1052. some of the

  1053. old translations

  1054. in verse 4

  1055. it's plural so

  1056. it's ye in

  1057. the old

  1058. translations.

  1059. So the first

  1060. few verses are

  1061. an individual

  1062. song of

  1063. praise to

  1064. God and

  1065. the last few

  1066. verses are

  1067. the company of

  1068. God's people

  1069. joining together

  1070. in praise of

  1071. him.

  1072. But all

  1073. together

  1074. recognizing God's

  1075. goodness,

  1076. recognizing God's

  1077. wisdom,

  1078. recognizing the

  1079. reign of the

  1080. Lord Jesus

  1081. and praising

  1082. God for all

  1083. he has done

  1084. for us.

  1085. So in

  1086. verses 1

  1087. to 3

  1088. it is the

  1089. individual

  1090. praising God.

  1091. Now again

  1092. there's something

  1093. you probably

  1094. don't get from

  1095. your translation.

  1096. In two places

  1097. it talks about

  1098. God being

  1099. my salvation.

  1100. It's the

  1101. beginning of

  1102. verse 2

  1103. and it's also

  1104. at the end

  1105. of verse 2.

  1106. Now what you

  1107. don't get from

  1108. that is that

  1109. the name

  1110. Isaiah,

  1111. the name of

  1112. the prophet

  1113. here,

  1114. means God

  1115. is my

  1116. salvation.

  1117. So there's a

  1118. bit of a

  1119. pun if you

  1120. like going

  1121. on here.

  1122. This is Isaiah

  1123. as the prophet

  1124. saying,

  1125. yes my name

  1126. is true,

  1127. God is

  1128. my salvation.

  1129. And three

  1130. things that

  1131. particularly

  1132. strike him

  1133. as he thinks

  1134. about God

  1135. his salvation.

  1136. The first

  1137. in verse 1

  1138. is God's

  1139. forgiveness.

  1140. So God

  1141. has rightly

  1142. been angry

  1143. with his

  1144. people.

  1145. His people

  1146. have failed

  1147. him,

  1148. they deserve

  1149. to be judged.

  1150. But our

  1151. God is a

  1152. merciful and

  1153. gracious God.

  1154. And when the

  1155. people turn

  1156. back to him

  1157. then he will

  1158. forgive them

  1159. and they

  1160. will be restored

  1161. to fellowship

  1162. with him.

  1163. And that is

  1164. something too

  1165. that we should

  1166. be praising

  1167. God for.

  1168. We deserve

  1169. God's wrath.

  1170. We have

  1171. done wrong,

  1172. we are

  1173. sinners,

  1174. we don't

  1175. deserve

  1176. anything

  1177. from God.

  1178. But through

  1179. the death

  1180. of the Lord

  1181. Jesus and

  1182. through God's

  1183. grace to us

  1184. we have

  1185. come to

  1186. know him.

  1187. And we

  1188. know he is

  1189. no longer

  1190. angry with

  1191. us.

  1192. Because the

  1193. Lord Jesus

  1194. has taken

  1195. the punishment,

  1196. he has

  1197. turned away

  1198. the wrath

  1199. of God.

  1200. He has

  1201. atoned for

  1202. our sins

  1203. and we

  1204. have forgiveness

  1205. through him.

  1206. And Isaiah

  1207. praises God

  1208. for that.

  1209. In verse 2

  1210. he praises God

  1211. that he doesn't

  1212. need to be

  1213. afraid.

  1214. Actually a couple

  1215. of weeks ago

  1216. he was talking

  1217. about the

  1218. trust,

  1219. who do you

  1220. trust?

  1221. And I think

  1222. that is coming

  1223. out again

  1224. in this.

  1225. Surely God

  1226. is my salvation,

  1227. I will trust

  1228. and not be

  1229. afraid.

  1230. Isn't it

  1231. great that

  1232. for us as

  1233. Christians,

  1234. when we go

  1235. through the

  1236. trials of life,

  1237. when things

  1238. are difficult

  1239. and stressful

  1240. for us,

  1241. we know

  1242. that we

  1243. can trust

  1244. the Saviour

  1245. who loved

  1246. us and

  1247. gave his

  1248. life for

  1249. us.

  1250. We know

  1251. he is in

  1252. every situation,

  1253. that he is

  1254. in control,

  1255. and we can

  1256. commit things

  1257. to him

  1258. knowing that

  1259. he knows

  1260. what is

  1261. best for

  1262. us.

  1263. And then

  1264. in verse 3

  1265. there is

  1266. the joy

  1267. that comes

  1268. from

  1269. salvation.

  1270. Our sins

  1271. have been

  1272. forgiven.

  1273. We have a

  1274. God,

  1275. a Saviour,

  1276. who we

  1277. can trust

  1278. in.

  1279. And so

  1280. we can

  1281. live our

  1282. lives with

  1283. joy,

  1284. with the

  1285. well of

  1286. salvation

  1287. springing up

  1288. within us

  1289. and rejoicing

  1290. in all that

  1291. the Saviour

  1292. has done

  1293. for us.

  1294. I wonder

  1295. whether we

  1296. as individuals,

  1297. as we do

  1298. as a church,

  1299. thank God

  1300. regularly for

  1301. all these

  1302. things that

  1303. he has done

  1304. for us,

  1305. for our

  1306. salvation,

  1307. for his

  1308. daily

  1309. provision,

  1310. for the

  1311. joy that

  1312. we can

  1313. have in

  1314. the Lord

  1315. Jesus.

  1316. But then

  1317. there's also

  1318. in verses

  1319. 4 to 6

  1320. there's the

  1321. united

  1322. worship

  1323. together.

  1324. This is

  1325. addressed to

  1326. all God's

  1327. people and

  1328. encouraging

  1329. them to

  1330. praise God

  1331. and to

  1332. tell others

  1333. about him.

  1334. And the

  1335. two go

  1336. together.

  1337. We praise

  1338. God because

  1339. we want

  1340. to sing

  1341. his praises

  1342. and

  1343. celebrate

  1344. all that

  1345. he has

  1346. done

  1347. in our

  1348. lives.

  1349. But we

  1350. also praise

  1351. God and

  1352. proclaim him

  1353. so that

  1354. others may

  1355. come to

  1356. know him

  1357. and to

  1358. trust him

  1359. as well.

  1360. And Isaiah

  1361. says the

  1362. two very

  1363. much go

  1364. together.

  1365. As people

  1366. can see the

  1367. delight that

  1368. we have in

  1369. our God,

  1370. the relationship

  1371. that we have

  1372. with him,

  1373. then they

  1374. will be

  1375. attracted to

  1376. him and

  1377. will be

  1378. able to

  1379. proclaim his

  1380. goodness and

  1381. the salvation

  1382. that we have

  1383. through the

  1384. Lord Jesus.

  1385. And that's

  1386. true both

  1387. individually and

  1388. corporately.

  1389. We should be

  1390. rejoicing in

  1391. our God and

  1392. that should be

  1393. in a sense

  1394. infectious,

  1395. that people

  1396. around about

  1397. us should

  1398. see we're

  1399. different and

  1400. should want

  1401. to come to

  1402. trust in

  1403. the Lord

  1404. Jesus.

  1405. So again I

  1406. ask myself

  1407. and all of

  1408. us, are

  1409. we rejoicing

  1410. in the

  1411. prospect of

  1412. the Lord's

  1413. return?

  1414. Do we

  1415. look forward

  1416. to that

  1417. day and

  1418. yearn for

  1419. it when

  1420. things will

  1421. be as

  1422. they should

  1423. be?

  1424. And when

  1425. we will

  1426. be with

  1427. our Lord

  1428. and be

  1429. with him

  1430. forever?

  1431. And if we

  1432. are, does

  1433. it make a

  1434. difference in

  1435. the way we

  1436. live?

  1437. Does it

  1438. make a

  1439. difference in

  1440. the way we

  1441. view our

  1442. world?

  1443. Does it

  1444. make a

  1445. difference in

  1446. how we

  1447. relate to

  1448. others and

  1449. seek to

  1450. witness to

  1451. them about

  1452. the Lord

  1453. Jesus?

  1454. When the

  1455. Bible talks

  1456. about the

  1457. second coming

  1458. of the

  1459. Lord Jesus

  1460. it is never

  1461. a theoretical

  1462. thing that

  1463. it is talking

  1464. about.

  1465. It is always

  1466. something that

  1467. should have a

  1468. practical impact

  1469. on our

  1470. lives and

  1471. make us want

  1472. day by day

  1473. to live for

  1474. the Lord and

  1475. to tell others

  1476. about him.

  1477. Kingdom of

  1478. Christ, for

  1479. thy coming we

  1480. pray.

  1481. Hasten, O

  1482. Father, the

  1483. dawn of that

  1484. day, when

  1485. this new

  1486. song thy

  1487. creation shall

  1488. sing, Satan

  1489. is vanquished

  1490. and Jesus

  1491. is king.

  1492. Come let us

  1493. sing praise

  1494. to our

  1495. king, Jesus

  1496. our king,

  1497. Jesus our

  1498. king.

  1499. This is our

  1500. song who to

  1501. Jesus belong.

  1502. Glory to

  1503. Jesus, to

  1504. Jesus our

  1505. king.

  1506. Let's pray

  1507. together.

  1508. our

  1509. Father, we

  1510. thank you

  1511. for this

  1512. wonderful

  1513. prophecy by

  1514. Isaiah.

  1515. We thank

  1516. you for the

  1517. way in which

  1518. you enabled

  1519. him so

  1520. accurately to

  1521. portray what

  1522. will happen

  1523. on the

  1524. Lord's

  1525. return.

  1526. That one

  1527. day the

  1528. Lord will

  1529. come back

  1530. and in

  1531. that day

  1532. everything

  1533. will be put

  1534. right that's

  1535. been so

  1536. wrong.

  1537. In that

  1538. day we

  1539. will be

  1540. united with

  1541. all others

  1542. who love

  1543. him and

  1544. know him.

  1545. Above all

  1546. in that

  1547. day we

  1548. will go

  1549. to be

  1550. with our

  1551. Lord and

  1552. to be

  1553. with him

  1554. forever.

  1555. Help us

  1556. to look

  1557. forward to

  1558. that day,

  1559. to long

  1560. for it and

  1561. to seek to

  1562. win others

  1563. for the

  1564. Lord Jesus

  1565. that they

  1566. too may

  1567. have the

  1568. joy of

  1569. knowing that

  1570. they will

  1571. go to

  1572. be with

  1573. him.

  1574. We thank

  1575. you for

  1576. your presence

  1577. with us

  1578. this evening.

  1579. We pray

  1580. you will

  1581. continue with

  1582. us now as

  1583. we come to

  1584. remember the

  1585. Lord Jesus

  1586. together.

  1587. We ask

  1588. in his

  1589. name.

  1590. Amen.

  1591. Amen.
