  1. Good evening. My name's Jim Crooks and I'm your guest speaker tonight at the Bible Teaching Service for Brunsfield Evangelical Church.

  2. Very grateful to Graham for asking me to share in God's Word with you.

  3. And when I asked him what topic it would be for tonight, he said it would be one of my own choosing.

  4. So presently I'm reading a lot in the book of Exodus and the reading for today was actually about the veil of the tabernacle,

  5. that portable temple that God designed and that he gave as a blueprint to Moses.

  6. And the passage is about this particular veil and the curtain that was in there.

  7. And I thought that we could usefully spend just a short time thinking about the significance of that,

  8. even in our own lives, and apply some teaching to us.

  9. So without any further ado, I just want to read the passages that were on my heart.

  10. So Exodus chapter 26 is my daily reading for today.

    Exodus 26 chapter mention

  11. And in it there is one verse of relevance and it says,

  12. And the veil shall separate for you the holy place from the most holy.

  13. Going into Hebrews chapter 10 we read,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  14. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,

  15. by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain,

  16. that is through his flesh,

  17. and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

  18. let us draw near with a true heart and full assurance of faith,

  19. with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience,

  20. and our bodies washed with pure water.

  21. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,

  22. for he who promised is faithful.

  23. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,

  24. not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some,

  25. but encouraging one another,

  26. and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

  27. Matthew chapter 27, one verse there, verse 51.

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  28. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

  29. From top to bottom.

  30. So that's our readings,

  31. and we're going to try and stitch all of these things together,

  32. reading from Exodus,

  33. and then in Hebrews,

  34. and then in the Gospels in Matthew.

  35. So, first of all,

  36. just a little bit of background about the veil.

  37. You'll have seen from the readings that we had

  38. that the veil, or the curtain,

  39. was in the portable temple called the tabernacle.

  40. Eventually, when the Jews built a temple under Solomon,

  41. then they did put a veil in there

  42. between the two most sacred rooms in the temple.

  43. But here in the tabernacle,

  44. in the reading in Exodus,

  45. first of all,

  46. was that a veil went in to divide two rooms,

  47. let's see,

  48. at the heart of the tabernacle.

  49. In the very heart of the tabernacle,

  50. the place reserved for the presence of God,

  51. that was called the holiest of all.

  52. And it was a room that was ten cubits cubed.

  53. A cubit is from your elbow to the tip of your finger.

  54. But ten cubits cubed.

  55. But the room that preceded that

  56. was the holy place,

  57. not the holiest of all,

  58. but the holy place.

  59. And in that room,

  60. they kept things like the menorah,

  61. the lampstand,

  62. a table of bread.

  63. There were twelve loaves in it,

  64. and it was changed every week.

  65. And they also had an altar of incense.

  66. And it was there that the priests

  67. went in to worship God.

  68. So there was the holy place,

  69. and then a veil,

  70. and then the holiest of all.

  71. And the veil was there

  72. to separate the two rooms.

  73. Now, the words that are used in Exodus 26

  74. include the word for veil,

  75. but also include a word for a screen.

  76. And if you like,

  77. the meaning of the words is

  78. one is to cover,

  79. to keep in,

  80. to surround,

  81. and the other is to separate.

  82. So if you're looking

  83. towards the holiest of all,

  84. then you were separated from it

  85. by this screen,

  86. this veil.

  87. And if you were inside

  88. the holiest of all,

  89. you were contained within it.

  90. So we've got the idea

  91. that there is something

  92. to be contained in,

  93. and there are other things

  94. to be kept out.

  95. And into the veil

  96. there were woven cherubim.

  97. Cherubim were angelic creatures,

  98. and we first read about them

  99. in Genesis in chapter 3.

  100. Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden,

  101. and you may remember the story

  102. of how they disobeyed God's instruction,

  103. and they took of the fruit

  104. of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

  105. And as a result of that,

  106. they broke their communion with God.

  107. And because all of humanity,

  108. if you like,

  109. were in the loins of Adam,

  110. they were all to be born from Adam.

  111. He was our representative head.

  112. And because he sinned,

  113. all of humanity

  114. were separated from God.

  115. And God cast them out of the garden

  116. because of their sin

  117. and their disobedience.

  118. And at the entrance to the garden,

  119. so that they couldn't enter in again,

  120. God appointed two cherubim.

  121. And the cherubim served as a guardian

  122. to the garden.

  123. So they kept what was in there

  124. holy and separate.

  125. And they, if you like,

  126. preserved the holiness of God.

  127. But also they prevented others

  128. from breaking in.

  129. They were guarding there.

  130. So there was this whole idea

  131. of separation.

  132. And the cherubim were woven

  133. into the veil of the tabernacle.

  134. And it was another picture

  135. of separation between God and man.

  136. It must have been a beautiful sight,

  137. this screen.

  138. But the principle that was involved

  139. was that of separation.

  140. And in fact,

  141. as God gives the instruction

  142. to his people of ancient times,

  143. that was the key word

  144. to understand the whole priestly ministry.

  145. that there was to be a separation

  146. between that which is clean

  147. and that which is unclean.

  148. Between that which is holy

  149. and that which is profane.

  150. And there was a separation

  151. between God and man.

  152. And yet God provided

  153. the system of worship

  154. so that man could come into

  155. the presence of God.

  156. and could only come in,

  157. of course,

  158. with blood of sacrifice.

  159. So reading the Old Testament

  160. and discovering all of these things

  161. is very important for us

  162. to think about

  163. our own relationship with God.

  164. God in his holiness

  165. and we in our sinfulness.

  166. And how that a sacrifice

  167. and blood has been provided

  168. so that we can go into

  169. the presence of God.

  170. And that's where we're going

  171. with this teaching.

  172. But when I was in Romania,

  173. I used to go to Romania

  174. quite a lot.

  175. I was in the Patriarchal Cathedral

  176. in Bucharest.

  177. I was on an official visit

  178. in my capacity

  179. as Assistant Principal

  180. of a college

  181. and we were meeting

  182. with other colleges out there.

  183. but we had an official tour

  184. of the Patriarchal Cathedral.

  185. And as we went in,

  186. the guide was explaining

  187. about the iconostasis,

  188. that barrier, if you like,

  189. that's presented

  190. just behind the altar.

  191. On that screen,

  192. there were various icons

  193. and it was gilded

  194. and precious stones.

  195. But you'll see just behind

  196. the two men in the middle

  197. that there was a gateway.

  198. And there was a curtain over that.

  199. And I remember our guide saying,

  200. do you know,

  201. if we're very fortunate,

  202. we will catch a glimpse

  203. of the Patriarch

  204. doing some priestly activities

  205. behind that curtain.

  206. And you know,

  207. it was just

  208. too good an opportunity

  209. for me.

  210. And I had to explain

  211. what had happened

  212. in Judaism,

  213. how that there was

  214. a curtain,

  215. a screen,

  216. a veil,

  217. a barrier,

  218. but that when Jesus died,

  219. as we've read,

  220. that barrier was removed

  221. and the way into

  222. God's presence

  223. was clear and plain

  224. and available

  225. for everyone

  226. who wanted to come to God

  227. through the Lord Jesus Christ.

  228. We had an interesting conversation.

  229. But what had happened

  230. basically in the early church

  231. is that those who couldn't

  232. leave the Jewish religion behind

  233. when they became Christians,

  234. they wanted to take

  235. so much of Judaism with them.

  236. They're called the Judaizers.

  237. And the Judaizers

  238. had a great influence

  239. in the early church.

  240. And out of the early church,

  241. of course,

  242. both Catholic

  243. and Orthodox movements

  244. began

  245. and they retained

  246. some of the features

  247. of the tabernacle

  248. and the temple.

  249. And sadly,

  250. the screen is one of them

  251. so that only

  252. the priests

  253. can go behind the screen

  254. and administer

  255. in the presence of God.

  256. But as we'll see,

  257. this is a great shame

  258. because what happened

  259. was that the screen

  260. of the tabernacle

  261. and temple

  262. was torn literally

  263. and symbolically

  264. or figuratively

  265. to show that the way

  266. into the immediate presence

  267. of God

  268. was available

  269. for all.

  270. So,

  271. why was it torn?

  272. Part of Matthew's narrative

  273. in his Gospel

  274. includes,

  275. of course,

  276. the preparation

  277. for Calvary.

  278. And we've been remembering

  279. that just last weekend

  280. at Easter time.

  281. But

  282. underpinning

  283. all of Matthew's Gospel

  284. is this journey

  285. that Jesus

  286. is taking

  287. from his earthly ministry,

  288. well,

  289. right from

  290. his nativity

  291. through to

  292. his adolescence

  293. and then

  294. into his earthly ministry

  295. and he's journeying

  296. towards the cross.

  297. And

  298. the death

  299. of the Lord Jesus

  300. is part

  301. of that narrative.

  302. And

  303. it is

  304. an expected

  305. death

  306. and even

  307. the Lord Jesus

  308. says,

  309. and Matthew

  310. records it,

  311. the Son of Man

  312. is about

  313. to be delivered

  314. into the hands

  315. of men

  316. and they will

  317. kill him

  318. and he will

  319. be raised

  320. on the third day.

  321. We also know

  322. that the death

  323. of the Lord Jesus

  324. is understood

  325. by Matthew

  326. as being

  327. necessary

  328. and he includes

  329. the words

  330. of the Lord Jesus

  331. or the statement

  332. about him.

  333. From that time

  334. Jesus

  335. began to show

  336. his disciples

  337. that he must

  338. go to Jerusalem

  339. and suffer many things

  340. from the elders

  341. and chief priests

  342. and scribes

  343. and be killed

  344. and on the third day

  345. be raised.

  346. Matthew

  347. also tells

  348. us

  349. that

  350. in the words

  351. of the Lord Jesus

  352. that his death

  353. was to be

  354. vicarious.

  355. That is

  356. not on

  357. behalf of

  358. Jesus himself

  359. but on

  360. behalf of

  361. us.

  362. And the Lord

  363. Jesus says,

  364. the Son of Man

  365. came not to be

  366. served but to

  367. serve

  368. and to give

  369. his life

  370. as a ransom

  371. for many.

  372. And so

  373. when the narrative

  374. reaches

  375. is the crisis

  376. of Calvary

  377. and the Lord

  378. Jesus

  379. is crucified

  380. on the cross.

  381. The expressions

  382. used by Matthew

  383. and the other

  384. gospelers

  385. are very brief,

  386. very terse

  387. because the narrative

  388. has been building up

  389. to that point.

  390. But as we read

  391. there were

  392. some unexpected

  393. things that happened

  394. at Calvary

  395. and so

  396. we read

  397. in Matthew's

  398. narrative

  399. from Matthew

  400. and 27

  401. verse 51

  402. and we

  403. read that

  404. that the

  405. behold

  406. the

  407. curtain of the

  408. temple was

  409. torn in two

  410. from the top

  411. to the bottom.

  412. But Matthew

  413. uses this device

  414. to introduce

  415. something that

  416. is a surprise.

  417. he uses the

  418. word

  419. behold

  420. and it's

  421. in the same

  422. kind of way

  423. that we would

  424. say

  425. and do you

  426. know what

  427. happened next?

  428. And as he

  429. presents the

  430. death of the

  431. Lord Jesus

  432. he wants to

  433. present a

  434. very unusual

  435. detail

  436. and that

  437. detail is

  438. about the

  439. about the

  440. curtain being

  441. torn in two.

  442. Behold

  443. the curtain

  444. of the temple

  445. was torn in two

  446. from top

  447. to bottom.

  448. Matthew uses

  449. that little

  450. word

  451. behold

  452. when he

  453. introduces

  454. surprises.

  455. So for

  456. instance

  457. in the

  458. narrative

  459. of the

  460. nativity

  461. an angel

  462. appears

  463. and warns

  464. the holy

  465. family

  466. not to go

  467. to Egypt

  468. because

  469. Herod was

  470. plotting

  471. to kill

  472. the children

  473. and then

  474. when the

  475. Lord Jesus

  476. comes to

  477. be baptized

  478. Matthew

  479. uses another

  480. behold

  481. there was

  482. a voice

  483. from heaven

  484. and exactly

  485. the same

  486. is used

  487. in Matthew

  488. 17

  489. there it's

  490. another voice

  491. well it's

  492. the same

  493. voice from

  494. heaven

  495. it's the

  496. same one

  497. God

  498. the Father

  499. but it's

  500. the record

  501. of a

  502. voice from

  503. heaven being

  504. used

  505. and then

  506. the Lord

  507. Jesus

  508. uses it

  509. as well

  510. in his

  511. own words

  512. as he

  513. ends

  514. his

  515. earthly

  516. ministry

  517. and he

  518. says to

  519. his

  520. disciples

  521. behold

  522. although I'm

  523. going away

  524. do you know

  525. what happens

  526. next

  527. I am with

  528. you

  529. always

  530. and so

  531. Matthew

  532. uses this

  533. to if you

  534. like accent

  535. to highlight

  536. that's what

  537. is going to

  538. happen here

  539. is something

  540. that's very

  541. significant

  542. and this

  543. tearing

  544. of the

  545. temple

  546. curtain

  547. is very

  548. significant

  549. he includes

  550. the detail

  551. that it's

  552. torn

  553. from top

  554. to bottom

  555. that it's

  556. a very

  557. deliberate

  558. act

  559. that something

  560. that may

  561. have been

  562. required

  563. like a

  564. covenant

  565. a promise

  566. a legal

  567. contract

  568. has been

  569. torn

  570. into

  571. from the

  572. top

  573. to the

  574. bottom

  575. and it

  576. implies

  577. that God

  578. himself

  579. has torn

  580. the veil

  581. that the

  582. veil which

  583. he instructed

  584. to be made

  585. for the

  586. tabernacle

  587. and which

  588. he instructed

  589. to be made

  590. for the

  591. temple

  592. is now

  593. done away

  594. with

  595. it's rendered

  596. obsolete

  597. and it is

  598. torn

  599. in two

  600. it's not

  601. just a little

  602. bit torn

  603. but it is

  604. torn up

  605. if you like

  606. and it is

  607. completely

  608. separated

  609. that the

  610. both sides

  611. of the

  612. curtain

  613. now hang

  614. listlessly

  615. and redundantly

  616. on both

  617. sides

  618. of the

  619. entrance

  620. into the

  621. holiest of

  622. all

  623. and what

  624. God is

  625. demonstrating

  626. is that

  627. in the

  628. death

  629. of the

  630. Lord

  631. Jesus

  632. this

  633. planned

  634. sacrifice

  635. of the

  636. son

  637. of his

  638. love

  639. that this

  640. is a

  641. significant

  642. world event

  643. and that

  644. there is

  645. the turning

  646. of history

  647. about

  648. on this

  649. pivot

  650. and to

  651. symbolise

  652. that

  653. the

  654. temple

  655. curtain

  656. was torn

  657. in two

  658. so it's

  659. not just

  660. that there

  661. is a

  662. literal

  663. tearing

  664. but there

  665. is a

  666. symbolic

  667. doing away

  668. with barriers

  669. that there

  670. were between

  671. God and

  672. man

  673. that which

  674. had to be

  675. contained

  676. within

  677. that which

  678. had to be

  679. held out

  680. has been

  681. done away

  682. with

  683. and now

  684. God

  685. stands in

  686. all his

  687. majesty

  688. and his

  689. glory

  690. in all his

  691. grace

  692. and his

  693. mercy

  694. and he

  695. is saying

  696. I'm

  697. available

  698. to everyone

  699. and that

  700. is the

  701. theological

  702. significance

  703. so I

  704. just want

  705. to do

  706. highlight

  707. two

  708. lessons

  709. around

  710. that

  711. simple

  712. principle

  713. and the

  714. lesson

  715. first of

  716. all

  717. is simply

  718. that when

  719. Matthew

  720. records

  721. this

  722. tearing

  723. of the

  724. temple

  725. then

  726. Matthew

  727. is

  728. demonstrating

  729. that the

  730. heavens

  731. are now

  732. open

  733. for God

  734. to declare

  735. that Jesus

  736. was the

  737. Son of

  738. God

  739. just as he

  740. did as he

  741. tore aside

  742. the heavens

  743. in chapter 3

  744. verse 17

  745. and in

  746. chapter 17

  747. verse 5

  748. of Matthew's

  749. gospel

  750. so now

  751. God

  752. tears

  753. aside

  754. everything

  755. that stands

  756. in the

  757. way

  758. and he

  759. declares

  760. that the

  761. Lord Jesus

  762. was the

  763. Son of

  764. God

  765. and that

  766. he was

  767. making

  768. sacrifice

  769. on behalf

  770. of God

  771. and the

  772. curtain

  773. is permanently

  774. opened

  775. and so

  776. standing

  777. at the

  778. cross

  779. not in

  780. the temple

  781. but standing

  782. at the

  783. cross

  784. here is

  785. the voice

  786. of a

  787. centurion

  788. not the

  789. voice of

  790. God

  791. himself

  792. but the

  793. voice of

  794. a Roman

  795. centurion

  796. not a

  797. Jew

  798. but a

  799. Roman

  800. and he

  801. says

  802. truly

  803. this was

  804. the

  805. Son of

  806. God

  807. and God

  808. has spoken

  809. fully

  810. and finally

  811. in his

  812. Son

  813. and in

  814. the death

  815. of his

  816. Son

  817. God

  818. reveals

  819. completely

  820. and beautifully

  821. all his

  822. love

  823. and he

  824. reveals

  825. his very

  826. heart

  827. and he

  828. reveals

  829. everything

  830. that he

  831. desires

  832. so although

  833. the Lord

  834. Jesus

  835. and his

  836. life

  837. are of

  838. great

  839. significance

  840. to us

  841. in the

  842. gospel

  843. and that

  844. there's a

  845. build up

  846. to this

  847. point

  848. here we

  849. have the

  850. full

  851. demonstration

  852. of the

  853. love of

  854. God

  855. the God

  856. who so

  857. loved the

  858. world

  859. that he

  860. gave

  861. his

  862. one

  863. and only

  864. Son

  865. the second

  866. lesson is

  867. just simply

  868. this and it

  869. was really

  870. taken from

  871. our reading

  872. in Hebrews

  873. that in

  874. Jesus'

  875. death

  876. and in

  877. his

  878. broken

  879. body

  880. symbolized

  881. by the

  882. torn

  883. curtain

  884. as well

  885. that this

  886. is the

  887. means by

  888. which

  889. anyone who

  890. would have

  891. access to

  892. the presence

  893. of God

  894. must come

  895. must come

  896. to Christ

  897. must come

  898. to Calvary

  899. must have

  900. their sins

  901. dealt with

  902. there because

  903. Jesus as the

  904. Lamb of God

  905. has presented

  906. the blood of

  907. the sacrifice

  908. in the holiest

  909. of all

  910. and his

  911. sacrifice has

  912. been accepted

  913. and the way

  914. unto God

  915. is forever

  916. made clear

  917. and there is

  918. no more

  919. sacrifice for

  920. sins

  921. there is

  922. nothing

  923. that humanity

  924. can do

  925. to earn

  926. God's

  927. favour

  928. God in

  929. his mercy

  930. and his

  931. grace

  932. provided

  933. the

  934. Lord

  935. Jesus

  936. and his

  937. sacrifice

  938. on Calvary

  939. has given

  940. full satisfaction

  941. to a

  942. holy God

  943. and so the

  944. writer to the

  945. Hebrews as he

  946. goes on to

  947. explain the

  948. significance

  949. of this

  950. access to

  951. God

  952. he says

  953. that we

  954. can have

  955. confidence

  956. to enter

  957. the holy

  958. places

  959. and so he

  960. encourages us

  961. with what

  962. I've called

  963. at another

  964. time

  965. a salad

  966. sermon

  967. because it

  968. always begins

  969. with letters

  970. he says

  971. letters

  972. draw near

  973. to God

  974. do you know

  975. we ought not

  976. to be flippant

  977. about this

  978. at all

  979. but what

  980. was a

  981. privilege

  982. that was

  983. not granted

  984. to millions

  985. upon millions

  986. throughout all

  987. of human

  988. history

  989. access was

  990. only granted

  991. to one

  992. person once

  993. a year

  994. and with

  995. the blood

  996. of a

  997. sacrifice

  998. the high

  999. priest

  1000. in Israel

  1001. he alone

  1002. could go

  1003. behind the

  1004. curtain

  1005. once a

  1006. year

  1007. but now

  1008. that curtain

  1009. is done

  1010. away with

  1011. our high

  1012. priest

  1013. is there

  1014. permanently

  1015. for us

  1016. interceding

  1017. for us

  1018. and because

  1019. he is there

  1020. because he

  1021. has taken

  1022. away the

  1023. curtain

  1024. then we

  1025. can draw

  1026. near

  1027. to God

  1028. I

  1029. usually

  1030. describe

  1031. prayer

  1032. as one

  1033. of the

  1034. most

  1035. portable

  1036. items

  1037. in all

  1038. of the

  1039. world

  1040. you don't

  1041. have to

  1042. carry it

  1043. with you

  1044. in some

  1045. kind of

  1046. special box

  1047. or in

  1048. beads

  1049. or in

  1050. any

  1051. artifact

  1052. but you

  1053. carry it

  1054. in your

  1055. heart

  1056. and anywhere

  1057. you are

  1058. in the

  1059. world

  1060. and at

  1061. any time

  1062. of the

  1063. day or

  1064. night

  1065. and in

  1066. any

  1067. circumstance

  1068. we can

  1069. pray

  1070. to God

  1071. we can

  1072. draw near

  1073. to God

  1074. he is

  1075. permanently

  1076. forever

  1077. near to

  1078. us

  1079. and for

  1080. we who

  1081. have come

  1082. to know

  1083. forgiveness

  1084. of sins

  1085. at Calvary

  1086. and have

  1087. professed

  1088. faith in

  1089. the Lord

  1090. Jesus

  1091. Christ

  1092. we have

  1093. this means

  1094. to draw

  1095. near to

  1096. God

  1097. at any

  1098. time

  1099. and in

  1100. any

  1101. place

  1102. and so

  1103. we're

  1104. encouraged

  1105. to do

  1106. that

  1107. just this

  1108. week

  1109. one of

  1110. the young

  1111. brothers

  1112. that I

  1113. walk

  1114. alongside

  1115. when he

  1116. was talking

  1117. about

  1118. confessing

  1119. sin

  1120. and

  1121. seeking

  1122. God's

  1123. help

  1124. to know

  1125. victory

  1126. in his

  1127. life

  1128. he said

  1129. then what

  1130. do we

  1131. do

  1132. Jim

  1133. then what

  1134. do we

  1135. do

  1136. and of

  1137. course

  1138. all I

  1139. could say

  1140. was

  1141. well we

  1142. are in

  1143. the presence

  1144. of God

  1145. and we

  1146. abide

  1147. there

  1148. we need

  1149. to take

  1150. time

  1151. to know

  1152. the presence

  1153. of God

  1154. with us

  1155. to be

  1156. silent

  1157. before him

  1158. not always

  1159. to be

  1160. making

  1161. requests

  1162. but in

  1163. that

  1164. position

  1165. that

  1166. place

  1167. of

  1168. quiet

  1169. solitude

  1170. and silence

  1171. and serenity

  1172. before God

  1173. to give in

  1174. to the

  1175. worship

  1176. that we

  1177. must feel

  1178. and just

  1179. to be

  1180. in his

  1181. presence

  1182. we're also

  1183. encouraged

  1184. to

  1185. let us

  1186. hold

  1187. fast

  1188. unwaveringly

  1189. let us

  1190. hold

  1191. unwaveringly

  1192. to our

  1193. confession

  1194. of faith

  1195. because there

  1196. is one in

  1197. the heavens

  1198. who represents

  1199. us

  1200. one who

  1201. is there

  1202. all of

  1203. the time

  1204. because we

  1205. can avail

  1206. ourselves

  1207. of his

  1208. presence

  1209. and his

  1210. help

  1211. at any

  1212. place

  1213. and in

  1214. any

  1215. time

  1216. then we

  1217. have

  1218. grace

  1219. to help

  1220. in time

  1221. of need

  1222. we profess

  1223. our faith

  1224. to a

  1225. watching

  1226. and a

  1227. listening

  1228. world

  1229. and in

  1230. silence

  1231. and sometimes

  1232. with speech

  1233. we are in

  1234. the presence

  1235. of God

  1236. to gain

  1237. all the

  1238. strength

  1239. that we

  1240. need

  1241. for daily

  1242. living

  1243. and to

  1244. live

  1245. consistent

  1246. lives

  1247. before

  1248. him

  1249. and then

  1250. we're also

  1251. encouraged

  1252. to do

  1253. let us

  1254. stir one

  1255. another

  1256. up to

  1257. love

  1258. and good

  1259. works

  1260. now the

  1261. old rendering

  1262. of that

  1263. in the

  1264. King James

  1265. version

  1266. of my

  1267. youth

  1268. was

  1269. let us

  1270. provoke

  1271. one another

  1272. well let's

  1273. provoke one

  1274. another to

  1275. love and

  1276. to good

  1277. works

  1278. but the

  1279. meaning is

  1280. made much

  1281. more clear

  1282. here isn't

  1283. it

  1284. stir one

  1285. another up

  1286. we've not

  1287. to provoke

  1288. one another

  1289. but we've

  1290. to stir

  1291. one another

  1292. up

  1293. to love

  1294. how do

  1295. we stir

  1296. love

  1297. well we

  1298. stir up

  1299. love by

  1300. loving people

  1301. first and

  1302. then we

  1303. encourage them

  1304. to step

  1305. out and

  1306. love others

  1307. not to

  1308. love us

  1309. back in

  1310. return but

  1311. for them

  1312. to love

  1313. others and

  1314. that is the

  1315. loving life

  1316. of the

  1317. Christian

  1318. of sacrifice

  1319. for others

  1320. and also

  1321. we are to

  1322. embark on

  1323. a life of

  1324. good works

  1325. of course

  1326. faith is

  1327. the gateway

  1328. to the

  1329. presence of

  1330. God

  1331. we can't

  1332. come to

  1333. God by

  1334. any other

  1335. means

  1336. we cannot

  1337. work for

  1338. his grace

  1339. and favour

  1340. in our

  1341. lives

  1342. but once

  1343. we come

  1344. by faith

  1345. our faith

  1346. must be

  1347. demonstrated

  1348. by our

  1349. good works

  1350. we must

  1351. show the

  1352. evidence

  1353. of the

  1354. revolution

  1355. that has

  1356. happened

  1357. in our

  1358. lives

  1359. and lastly

  1360. as we

  1361. consider

  1362. the torn

  1363. veil

  1364. and our

  1365. continual

  1366. drawing near

  1367. to God

  1368. then we

  1369. are to

  1370. also

  1371. meet

  1372. together

  1373. to

  1374. encourage

  1375. one another

  1376. in the

  1377. faith

  1378. that has

  1379. been so

  1380. difficult

  1381. hasn't it

  1382. during the

  1383. Covid

  1384. restrictions

  1385. but

  1386. things will

  1387. come back

  1388. to normal

  1389. but I

  1390. would certainly

  1391. hope and

  1392. pray that

  1393. things aren't

  1394. going to be

  1395. the old

  1396. normal

  1397. but that

  1398. we really

  1399. are enthused

  1400. by meeting

  1401. together

  1402. by corporate

  1403. worship

  1404. by fellowship

  1405. together

  1406. by loving

  1407. deeds and

  1408. loving language

  1409. that we will

  1410. be able to

  1411. use amongst

  1412. one another

  1413. and so

  1414. we've got

  1415. this principle

  1416. that we

  1417. have been

  1418. taught by

  1419. the torn

  1420. veil

  1421. veil

  1422. that it's

  1423. access to

  1424. God

  1425. completely

  1426. the coronavirus

  1427. has been

  1428. there and

  1429. there's been

  1430. no access

  1431. to all

  1432. kinds of

  1433. things

  1434. but that

  1435. never affected

  1436. our access

  1437. to God

  1438. nor can

  1439. anything

  1440. affect our

  1441. access to

  1442. God

  1443. and just as

  1444. we think

  1445. then about

  1446. that torn

  1447. veil

  1448. again

  1449. it's to

  1450. remember

  1451. that the

  1452. way into

  1453. the very

  1454. presence of

  1455. God

  1456. is

  1457. completely

  1458. free

  1459. and open

  1460. it's an

  1461. immense

  1462. privilege

  1463. and we

  1464. should avail

  1465. ourselves

  1466. of it

  1467. to draw

  1468. near to

  1469. him

  1470. to hold

  1471. fast

  1472. to

  1473. have

  1474. consistent

  1475. profession

  1476. of our

  1477. faith

  1478. to

  1479. demonstrate

  1480. love

  1481. for each

  1482. other

  1483. and to

  1484. reflect the

  1485. revolution of

  1486. God in

  1487. our hearts

  1488. by our

  1489. good works

  1490. and then

  1491. also to

  1492. be meeting

  1493. together to

  1494. encourage one

  1495. another in

  1496. the faith

  1497. may God

  1498. bless you

  1499. as you

  1500. enjoy the

  1501. presence of

  1502. God

  1503. let's briefly

  1504. pray

  1505. Father thank

  1506. you for

  1507. this incredible

  1508. design in the

  1509. tabernacle

  1510. and then in

  1511. the temple

  1512. and we thank

  1513. you Father

  1514. that it

  1515. comes right

  1516. through to

  1517. the gospels

  1518. and also the

  1519. epistles

  1520. we thank

  1521. you for

  1522. the unity

  1523. of the

  1524. book

  1525. and for

  1526. this

  1527. unintended

  1528. consequence

  1529. in some

  1530. ways

  1531. or coincidence

  1532. that there

  1533. is a

  1534. veil that

  1535. is to

  1536. be torn

  1537. and symbolising

  1538. the way

  1539. into God

  1540. is made

  1541. free

  1542. to all

  1543. that you

  1544. are accessible

  1545. by all

  1546. through the

  1547. Lord Jesus

  1548. and through

  1549. what he did

  1550. in Calvary

  1551. Father we

  1552. pray

  1553. that we

  1554. might use

  1555. this most

  1556. portable

  1557. of gifts

  1558. and that we

  1559. will pray

  1560. without ceasing

  1561. that we

  1562. will have

  1563. lives that

  1564. are

  1565. worshipful

  1566. we pray

  1567. that our

  1568. lives will

  1569. be

  1570. marked by

  1571. a closeness

  1572. to you

  1573. that we

  1574. will be

  1575. consistent

  1576. in our

  1577. profession

  1578. of faith

  1579. and we

  1580. have hope

  1581. through

  1582. the curtain

  1583. to be

  1584. one day

  1585. in your

  1586. immediate

  1587. presence

  1588. and we

  1589. thank you

  1590. Father

  1591. that we

  1592. will be

  1593. able to

  1594. stir one

  1595. another up

  1596. to love

  1597. and good

  1598. works

  1599. and as we

  1600. continue to

  1601. meet together

  1602. we pray

  1603. our Father

  1604. it will be

  1605. for your

  1606. glory

  1607. as we

  1608. encourage

  1609. one another

  1610. in our

  1611. faith

  1612. and we

  1613. pray for

  1614. your blessing

  1615. towards this

  1616. end

  1617. we give

  1618. you thanks

  1619. in Jesus

  1620. name

  1621. Amen

  1622. Thank you

  1623. very much

  1624. for listening

  1625. and I do

  1626. trust that

  1627. the Lord

  1628. will encourage

  1629. your hearts

  1630. as you

  1631. serve him

  1632. to draw

  1633. near

  1634. we have

  1635. confidence

  1636. to enter

  1637. the holy

  1638. places

  1639. God bless
