  1. Well, good evening. My name's Elder Brown. I'm from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Collington Road.

  2. Well, actually, you'll be glad to know that's not the case. I'm just checking you're awake on a Sunday afternoon.

  3. I'm Andrew Brown. I have the privilege to attend a Charlotte Chapel church plant, Christ Church Queensferry in Queensferry.

  4. And I've been asked to come and share with you a little about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  5. And I'd like to start out by admitting I'm not an expert in Mormon theology, but I do have a little experience in the area.

  6. I once attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Edinburgh.

  7. And after God opened my eyes to that false teaching, he gave me a real heart to reach out to those who would profess belief in Jesus,

  8. but also deny what God has revealed about himself in the scripture.

  9. So, before we dive into their beliefs, let's turn to God once more in prayer.

  10. Lord, as we examine false teaching about who you are and what you've done, may it drive us ever closer to you.

  11. God, help us to be like those Bereans in Acts 17, who were searching the scriptures daily to find out if what Paul taught them was true.

  12. Lord, help us to accept that even our righteous deeds are like filthy rags before you, a perfectly holy God.

  13. But despite our condition, we thank you that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

  14. Father, help us to have right motives when we engage those of a different faith.

  15. Help us to view them like Jesus, a sheep without a shepherd, and have compassion on them.

  16. God, drive out that desire to win arguments.

  17. Help us to remember that there's a soul at stake.

  18. Lord, give us energy and attentiveness this evening.

  19. Help me accurately represent the beliefs and teachings of the LDS Church.

  20. And I ask that our time together would bring you glory.

  21. And that in coming days and years, there will be conversations that would lead to salvation.

  22. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  23. Amen.

  24. Well, to put you at ease after telling you I was from the LDS Church, maybe I'll put your minds at rest by reading a Spurgeon quote.

  25. This is what he said.

  26. If a crooked stick is before you, you need not explain how crooked it is.

  27. Lay a straight one down beside it, and the work is well done.

  28. Preach the truth, and error will stand abashed in its presence.

  29. That kind of, I think, illustrates my attitude to dealing with those of a different faith.

  30. You don't need to know exactly what they believe to share the truth with them.

  31. That being said, I think sessions like this are useful.

  32. Because if you know some of the preconceptions that are in their mind when you use certain terms,

  33. it will help you share the truth with them.

  34. You'll probably have bumped into young missionaries like the ones on the screen.

  35. Though, maybe not recently because of COVID.

  36. I've found how they're getting their message out as offering you free books of Mormon on social media.

  37. But, if you did meet them, or bump into them in person,

  38. they'll be wearing those little black badges, and they'll say,

  39. Elder, or Sister, so and so.

  40. The male missionaries are here for about two years,

  41. and the female missionaries come for about 18 months.

  42. So, why bother sharing the gospel with them?

  43. Because if you chat to them, they'll say,

  44. Of course, I'm a Christian just like you.

  45. I believe in Jesus.

  46. Jesus, I've accepted the gospel.

  47. Well, I hope by the time we're finished this evening,

  48. you'll have some idea why I believe they really need the gospel.

  49. To set the scene with me,

  50. imagine I come and tell you,

  51. I really know Graham Shanks.

  52. We agree, of course, he's the pastor of this church.

  53. Absolutely.

  54. No argument there.

  55. No disagreement.

  56. If I can be so bold,

  57. I know I'm better than you do.

  58. He's got fiery ginger hair.

  59. He's seven foot tall.

  60. Lives in Holyrood Palace.

  61. And he even keeps a pet tiger.

  62. Well, do I really know Graham?

  63. I'm saying I know him.

  64. We've both already agreed he's the pastor.

  65. But does the way I'm describing to you show I really know him?

  66. Or am I describing something that's based kind of in reality,

  67. but let's face it, that's not Graham, is it?

  68. So, I'd like to bring you to the words that Jesus said in John 8, 24.

  69. He said this,

  70. Unless you believe that I am,

  71. you will die in your sin.

  72. What we believe about Jesus really matters.

  73. It's the difference between life and death.

  74. These folks, they're putting their trust in Jesus.

  75. A Jesus that I would argue does not exist.

  76. And personally, that breaks my heart.

  77. For me,

  78. and don't get,

  79. all of us need salvation.

  80. But these people will go to eternity.

  81. And I believe they will be the ones that may hear,

  82. Lord, Lord,

  83. did we not in your name do many marvelous works?

  84. And they'll say,

  85. I never knew.

  86. Because they're not putting their trust

  87. in the Jesus that is revealed in Scripture.

  88. A Jesus that is invented in a human's mind

  89. cannot save you.

  90. Now, please don't mishear me when I say that.

  91. It is not having a perfect theological understanding

  92. of Jesus or who God is that will save you.

  93. That's impossible with our human minds.

  94. We're talking about an infinite God.

  95. But if we're denying truth

  96. that he has revealed to us,

  97. how can we really be saying we're worshiping?

  98. Jesus said also in John,

  99. we must worship God in spirit and in truth.

  100. As I understand it,

  101. that's saying we must worship God

  102. for who he has revealed himself to be.

  103. We cannot, as I said earlier,

  104. worship God and reject what he has revealed

  105. about himself to us.

  106. So where does that leave us here in Edinburgh?

  107. There's lots of people who have lots of opinions

  108. about who Jesus is.

  109. You'll be hearing about some of them

  110. as you go through your series.

  111. We have Islam that teaches Jesus is only a prophet.

  112. He's not the son of God.

  113. He didn't die on a cross.

  114. Likewise, Jehovah's Witnesses teach that Jesus isn't God.

  115. Rather, they teach he's the Archangel Michael

  116. in human form.

  117. Which brings us to what the focus of our topic is tonight.

  118. What is the LDS view of God?

  119. There are many things we could discuss.

  120. You'll see some of them on the slide just there.

  121. We could talk about Joseph Smith's history.

  122. We could talk about the polygamy in the church.

  123. That might be quite interesting.

  124. We could even talk about the odd underwear

  125. they choose to wear.

  126. Or the secret handshakes that they've nicked

  127. from the Freemasons.

  128. While all these might be very interesting topics,

  129. and I'd enjoy chatting to you about them,

  130. these are not the heart of the issue.

  131. I believe the main focus of any evangelism encounter,

  132. in fact, any gospel-centered conversation you have,

  133. should have these two things involved.

  134. Who is God?

  135. And what is the gospel?

  136. Due to our limited time,

  137. I'll really only have time to unpack

  138. the first of these questions.

  139. But I'd like to give you a little flavor

  140. of how they view the gospel.

  141. I don't think I'm being unfair

  142. if I describe what they believe

  143. as works-based righteousness.

  144. The Book of Mormon said God saves you

  145. after all you can do.

  146. And just a little plug for a YouTube site

  147. I really like, Lutheran Satire,

  148. you should check out their video

  149. on the Mormon gospel.

  150. I think you'll get a little laugh.

  151. But ultimately, there is a really serious message there.

  152. Salvation after all we can do

  153. is no gospel at all.

  154. Joseph Smith, when he translated Romans 4 or 5,

  155. turned it totally on its head.

  156. He said, God does not justify the ungodly.

  157. We're doomed if that's the case.

  158. We have no hope if that's the case.

  159. But before we understand how we approach God,

  160. we probably need to know who he is.

  161. So what I'd like to focus on tonight is

  162. what is the LDS view,

  163. or the Latter-day Saint view, of God?

  164. You'll see their own website on the screen behind me.

  165. I'd just like to read it to you.

  166. Latter-day Saints view members of the Godhead

  167. in a manner that corresponds in a number of ways

  168. with the views of others in the Christian world.

  169. Both significant differences.

  170. Latter-day Saints pray to God the Father

  171. in the name of Jesus Christ.

  172. They acknowledge the Father

  173. as the ultimate object of their worship,

  174. the Son as Lord and Redeemer,

  175. and the Holy Spirit as the messenger

  176. and revelator of the Father and the Son.

  177. But where the Latter-day Saints differ

  178. from other Christian religions

  179. is in their belief that God and Jesus Christ

  180. are glorified physical beings,

  181. and that each member of the Godhead

  182. is a separate being.

  183. I've highlighted some words

  184. from what I've just read,

  185. because I want you to pay particular attention,

  186. because probably quite a lot of you thought,

  187. even me at first reading went,

  188. fair enough,

  189. nothing overly controversial there, right?

  190. Sounds pretty legitimate.

  191. But what I want you to notice is,

  192. and I'll stop at this several times,

  193. if you don't get,

  194. if you don't define your terms,

  195. you can find yourself agreeing to a lot

  196. that you don't actually agree to.

  197. So how would an LDS person define being here?

  198. Well, quite straightforward, they mean God.

  199. So the LDS view of the Godhead

  200. is there are three separate gods,

  201. all who have their own physical bodies,

  202. who are part of the Godhead

  203. because they work together.

  204. So,

  205. how does that differ from what we believe?

  206. Forgive me for taking the time to clarify it,

  207. but I think it is important.

  208. Because rather than the Father,

  209. the Son, and the Holy Spirit

  210. being all distinct persons,

  211. but by one nature God,

  212. they believe they're all separate gods.

  213. I know I've probably dived in quite deep,

  214. quite quickly.

  215. So please,

  216. allow me to conduct this little thought experiment,

  217. and hopefully the slide behind us

  218. will keep us where we need to be.

  219. If you are up for it,

  220. you can close your eyes,

  221. that might help,

  222. but that's your choice.

  223. Imagine with me

  224. if I threw a rock at your head.

  225. I won't,

  226. I promise,

  227. don't even have a rock on me,

  228. but imagine with me

  229. for a moment if I did.

  230. Smack.

  231. Hits you in the side of the head.

  232. Why does it hurt?

  233. Well,

  234. it has being,

  235. it exists,

  236. it's a rock,

  237. it's hard,

  238. it's harder than your head,

  239. it's going to hurt.

  240. It has being,

  241. it exists.

  242. Imagine with me,

  243. instead of you complaining to me,

  244. hey,

  245. hold on a second,

  246. why did you throw that rock at me?

  247. Instead you turned to the rock

  248. and went,

  249. oh,

  250. you nasty rock,

  251. how dare you hit me

  252. in the side of the head?

  253. Will it care?

  254. Not in the slightest,

  255. because it's not a person.

  256. So,

  257. when we say we believe

  258. that there is

  259. one being of God,

  260. but three persons,

  261. we're talking about

  262. two different categories.

  263. We're talking about

  264. what God is,

  265. and then we're talking about

  266. who God is.

  267. We relate to God

  268. as Father,

  269. Son,

  270. and Holy Spirit.

  271. They're all

  272. individual persons.

  273. We can clearly see this

  274. at Jesus' baptism.

  275. There's the Father in heaven,

  276. the Holy Spirit

  277. descending like the dove,

  278. Jesus in the water.

  279. Three separate persons.

  280. All one God.

  281. One of my favorite passages

  282. in scripture is

  283. Philippians 2,

  284. because it tells us

  285. just how amazing Jesus is.

  286. Though being in very nature God,

  287. did not consider equality with God

  288. something he held onto.

  289. But he emptied himself,

  290. taken on the form of a servant,

  291. and humbled himself

  292. by becoming obedient unto death,

  293. even death on a cross.

  294. Jesus,

  295. in very nature God.

  296. We read from Isaiah.

  297. There is only one.

  298. From everlasting

  299. to everlasting,

  300. but we'll come on to that

  301. more shortly.

  302. One of the really interesting

  303. things I find

  304. when I've been chatting

  305. to the Mormon missionaries

  306. or the Latter-day Saints,

  307. as they prefer now it is,

  308. is that

  309. when they talk about God,

  310. they're actually

  311. one of the most polytheistic

  312. religions on the planet.

  313. And that just means

  314. they have an endless

  315. number of gods.

  316. To them,

  317. God the Father

  318. once

  319. lived on a planet

  320. as a man

  321. and

  322. had a God

  323. who had a God

  324. who had a God

  325. who had a God.

  326. I'm guessing you get the idea.

  327. They believe in what's called

  328. the law

  329. of eternal regression.

  330. Gods

  331. that have gods

  332. that have gods.

  333. you can probably see

  334. why I'd argue

  335. Islam is even closer

  336. to Christianity

  337. than Mormonism is.

  338. They believe

  339. that God the Father

  340. has not always

  341. been God.

  342. I don't know

  343. how you can read

  344. the passage

  345. that we looked at tonight

  346. and think

  347. that God

  348. became God.

  349. I'll give you

  350. Joseph Smith's own words.

  351. After the death

  352. of one of the elders

  353. in the early Mormon church

  354. called Elder King Follett,

  355. Joseph Smith

  356. gave a speech

  357. to

  358. commemorate

  359. the elder's life.

  360. And I'd like to read you

  361. some of the words.

  362. Again,

  363. you can follow along with me.

  364. God himself

  365. was once

  366. as we are now

  367. and is

  368. an exalted man.

  369. He sits enthroned

  370. in yonder heavens.

  371. That

  372. is the great secret.

  373. I'm going to tell you

  374. how God

  375. came to be God.

  376. We have imagined

  377. and supposed

  378. that God was God

  379. from all eternity.

  380. I will refute

  381. that idea

  382. and take away

  383. the veil

  384. so that you may see.

  385. He was once

  386. a man like us.

  387. Yeah,

  388. that God himself,

  389. the Father of us,

  390. all

  391. dwelt

  392. on an earth.

  393. It wasn't just

  394. Joseph Smith.

  395. The fifth president

  396. of the Mormon church,

  397. Lorenzo Snow,

  398. he came up

  399. with this little couplet

  400. to summarize

  401. their belief,

  402. if you like.

  403. As man

  404. is now,

  405. God once was.

  406. As God is now,

  407. man may become.

  408. Incredible

  409. if you're familiar

  410. with

  411. standard

  412. Christian historic

  413. teaching, right?

  414. But that is

  415. what they believe.

  416. What do they believe

  417. about Jesus?

  418. Well,

  419. they identify

  420. Jesus

  421. as Jehovah

  422. of the Old Testament.

  423. You might be

  424. wondering,

  425. hold on a second,

  426. I thought you said

  427. they didn't identify

  428. God the Father

  429. and Jesus

  430. as the one God.

  431. Well,

  432. they don't.

  433. They believe

  434. that the name

  435. Jehovah

  436. exclusively refers

  437. to Jesus

  438. and they believe

  439. the term

  440. Elohim

  441. or the Hebrew word

  442. for God

  443. refers to

  444. God the Father.

  445. This brings us

  446. back to something

  447. I mentioned earlier.

  448. Anytime you're

  449. talking to

  450. someone from

  451. the LDS church,

  452. anytime they use

  453. a term

  454. or word,

  455. pause for a second

  456. and just say,

  457. how do you

  458. understand that?

  459. What do you mean

  460. when you say that?

  461. You'll find it

  462. really is

  463. very,

  464. very necessary.

  465. Otherwise,

  466. you could be

  467. agreeing with them

  468. for hours

  469. and in the end

  470. realize,

  471. well,

  472. you don't believe

  473. the same thing

  474. at all.

  475. And probably

  476. a really quite

  477. easy example

  478. of this is

  479. the virgin birth.

  480. We'll both go,

  481. yeah,

  482. of course we believe

  483. in the virgin birth.

  484. Mormons will go,

  485. yeah,

  486. believe in the virgin birth,

  487. sure.

  488. But,

  489. the Mormon means

  490. Mary was a virgin

  491. because she had

  492. intercourse with God

  493. rather than with a man.

  494. Not really what we

  495. believe,

  496. is it?

  497. Brigham Young

  498. put it this way,

  499. the birth of the

  500. saviour was as

  501. natural as births

  502. of our children.

  503. It was the result

  504. of a natural action.

  505. He,

  506. particularly flesh

  507. and blood,

  508. was begotten of

  509. his father

  510. as we were

  511. of our fathers.

  512. We could also agree

  513. Jesus is the only

  514. begotten son,

  515. right?

  516. That's a term

  517. we're familiar with,

  518. I would hope.

  519. What does the LDS

  520. person mean by that?

  521. Well,

  522. Mormons believe

  523. we're all spirit

  524. children,

  525. they actually believe

  526. we existed before

  527. our physical birth,

  528. and we're all

  529. spirit children

  530. of heavenly father

  531. and mother.

  532. Yeah,

  533. you heard me

  534. correctly.

  535. They do believe

  536. God the Father

  537. has a wife,

  538. at least one.

  539. I'd like to read

  540. you again

  541. an LDS publication.

  542. This is from

  543. Messages of the

  544. First Presidency.

  545. Jesus,

  546. however,

  547. is the firstborn

  548. among all the

  549. sons of God,

  550. the first begotten

  551. in the spirit

  552. and the only begotten

  553. in the flesh.

  554. He is our elder

  555. brother,

  556. and we,

  557. like him,

  558. are in the image

  559. of God.

  560. All men and women

  561. are in the

  562. similitude of the

  563. universal father

  564. and mother,

  565. and are literally

  566. sons and daughters

  567. of deity.

  568. What more is

  569. needed to convince

  570. us that both

  571. man,

  572. sorry,

  573. that man,

  574. both in spirit

  575. and body,

  576. is in the image

  577. and likeness of God,

  578. and that God

  579. himself is in the

  580. form of a man?

  581. I hope by this

  582. point you get

  583. why I strongly

  584. believe they need

  585. the gospel.

  586. They need to

  587. hear the truth,

  588. so how might

  589. we share it

  590. with them?

  591. Well,

  592. to be honest,

  593. although I

  594. started,

  595. I asked one

  596. of my favorite

  597. passages to read

  598. to the Mormon

  599. missionaries to be

  600. read at the start,

  601. very,

  602. very often,

  603. if you do read

  604. them a verse that

  605. goes directly

  606. against the

  607. teachings of

  608. their church,

  609. they'll just say,

  610. hold on a second

  611. though,

  612. we only believe

  613. the Bible as

  614. far as it's

  615. been translated

  616. correctly.

  617. So,

  618. how do we

  619. get around

  620. that?

  621. Well,

  622. hands up,

  623. I don't speak

  624. Hebrew or

  625. Greek,

  626. so I can't

  627. really say if

  628. something's been

  629. translated correctly,

  630. but thankfully,

  631. we have

  632. wonderful things

  633. called interlinear

  634. translations,

  635. so they can be

  636. helpful.

  637. However,

  638. they don't have

  639. any concerns

  640. about the

  641. translation of

  642. the Book of

  643. Mormon.

  644. So,

  645. actually,

  646. that's the

  647. approach I use

  648. when I'm

  649. talking with

  650. the Mormon

  651. missionaries.

  652. It's not

  653. because I

  654. believe the

  655. Book of

  656. Mormon is

  657. true,

  658. it's because

  659. they do.

  660. So,

  661. we can ask

  662. several questions

  663. of the

  664. Book of

  665. Mormon.

  666. You see,

  667. the LDS

  668. missionaries

  669. are coming

  670. to you,

  671. and they're

  672. asking you

  673. to pray

  674. about whether

  675. their church

  676. is true

  677. based on

  678. the Book

  679. of Mormon,

  680. and they're

  681. asking you

  682. to judge

  683. whether Joseph

  684. Smith is a

  685. prophet based

  686. on the

  687. Book of

  688. Mormon.

  689. So,

  690. we can ask

  691. those questions.

  692. For example,

  693. what does the

  694. Book of Mormon

  695. teach about

  696. God?

  697. Who is

  698. God?

  699. I think that's

  700. a fair question

  701. to ask the

  702. Mormon

  703. missionaries.

  704. I've already

  705. read to you

  706. what their

  707. church teaches

  708. about God.

  709. But is that

  710. what the

  711. Book of Mormon

  712. says?

  713. Well,

  714. I'd argue

  715. no.

  716. No,

  717. it isn't.

  718. I think the

  719. Book of Mormon

  720. is very clear.

  721. There's only

  722. one God,

  723. and that

  724. that God

  725. is the

  726. Father,

  727. the Son,

  728. and the

  729. Holy Spirit.

  730. I'd like to

  731. read to you

  732. from the

  733. Book of Mormon,

  734. and I hope

  735. you won't

  736. get your

  737. pitchforks

  738. and chase

  739. me out.

  740. This is

  741. 2 Nephi

  742. 31,

  743. 21.

  744. And now

  745. behold,

  746. my beloved

  747. brethren,

  748. this is the

  749. way,

  750. and there

  751. is none

  752. other way,

  753. nor name

  754. given under

  755. heaven,

  756. whereby man

  757. can be

  758. saved in

  759. the kingdom

  760. of God.

  761. And now

  762. behold,

  763. this is the

  764. doctrine of

  765. Christ,

  766. and the

  767. only and

  768. true doctrine

  769. of the

  770. Father,

  771. and of the

  772. Son,

  773. and of the

  774. Holy Ghost,

  775. which is

  776. one God

  777. without end.

  778. Amen.

  779. Confused

  780. you?

  781. That's not

  782. what their

  783. church teaches,

  784. right?

  785. Just in

  786. case you

  787. think it's

  788. a one-off

  789. verse that

  790. slipped in

  791. there from

  792. somewhere.

  793. I'd like to

  794. read you

  795. another one.

  796. Alma 11,

  797. 44.

  798. Now,

  799. this

  800. restoration

  801. shall come

  802. to all,

  803. both old

  804. and young,

  805. both bond

  806. and free,

  807. both male

  808. and female,

  809. both the

  810. wicked and

  811. the righteous,

  812. and even

  813. there shall

  814. not be so

  815. much as a

  816. hair of

  817. their heads

  818. be lost.

  819. But everything

  820. shall be

  821. restored to

  822. its perfect

  823. frame,

  824. as it is

  825. now,

  826. or in the

  827. body,

  828. and shall

  829. be brought

  830. and be

  831. reassigned

  832. before the

  833. bar of

  834. Christ,

  835. the Son,

  836. and God

  837. the Father,

  838. and the

  839. Holy Spirit,

  840. which is

  841. one eternal

  842. God,

  843. to be

  844. judged

  845. according to

  846. their works,

  847. whether they

  848. be good,

  849. or whether

  850. they be

  851. evil.

  852. I can't

  853. reiterate

  854. enough,

  855. or you

  856. must ask

  857. them,

  858. please explain

  859. to me

  860. what you

  861. mean by

  862. the terms

  863. you use.

  864. We could

  865. also ask

  866. them,

  867. what sort

  868. of being

  869. is God?

  870. I hope

  871. I've already

  872. shown that

  873. their church

  874. teaches that

  875. God was once

  876. a man

  877. on their

  878. planet,

  879. but is

  880. that what

  881. the Book

  882. of Mormon

  883. says?

  884. Forgive me

  885. again for

  886. turning there,

  887. but Alma

  888. 18,

  889. 24-28.

  890. And Ammon

  891. began to

  892. speak unto

  893. them with

  894. boldness,

  895. and said

  896. unto him,

  897. Believest

  898. thou that

  899. there is

  900. a God?

  901. And he

  902. answered,

  903. and said

  904. unto him,

  905. I do

  906. not know

  907. what that

  908. meaneth.

  909. And Ammon

  910. said,

  911. Believest

  912. thou there

  913. is a

  914. great

  915. spirit?

  916. And he

  917. said,

  918. Yea.

  919. And Ammon

  920. said,

  921. This is

  922. God.

  923. And Ammon

  924. said unto

  925. him again,

  926. Believest

  927. thou that

  928. this great

  929. spirit,

  930. who is

  931. God,

  932. created

  933. all things

  934. which are

  935. in heaven

  936. and in

  937. the earth?

  938. And just

  939. a few

  940. chapters

  941. later,

  942. and the

  943. king said,

  944. God is

  945. that great

  946. spirit that

  947. brought our

  948. fathers out

  949. of the land

  950. of Jerusalem.

  951. Sorry.

  952. Is God

  953. that great

  954. spirit that

  955. brought our

  956. fathers out

  957. of the land

  958. of Jerusalem?

  959. And Aaron

  960. said unto

  961. him,

  962. Yea,

  963. he is that

  964. great spirit,

  965. and he

  966. created all

  967. things both

  968. in heaven

  969. and in

  970. earth.

  971. Believest

  972. thou this?

  973. And he

  974. said,

  975. Yea,

  976. I believe

  977. that the

  978. great spirit

  979. created all

  980. things,

  981. and I

  982. desire that

  983. you should

  984. tell me

  985. concerning

  986. all these

  987. things,

  988. and I

  989. will

  990. believe

  991. thy

  992. words.

  993. Just go

  994. into the

  995. LDS

  996. website,

  997. you'll find

  998. clearly under

  999. the definition

  1000. of God

  1001. the Father,

  1002. he has a

  1003. body of

  1004. flesh and

  1005. bones as

  1006. tangible as

  1007. man's.

  1008. Bizarre.

  1009. But it is

  1010. what they

  1011. believe.

  1012. There are

  1013. many,

  1014. many

  1015. articulate

  1016. Mormons who

  1017. will give

  1018. you explanations

  1019. for these

  1020. things.

  1021. But what

  1022. if we just

  1023. ask the

  1024. Book of

  1025. Mormon,

  1026. was God

  1027. once a

  1028. man on

  1029. another

  1030. planet?

  1031. Again,

  1032. the

  1033. Book of

  1034. Mormon

  1035. says no.

  1036. The

  1037. first

  1038. verse I'd

  1039. like to

  1040. read you

  1041. is a

  1042. direct

  1043. quotation

  1044. of

  1045. Malachi

  1046. 3.6

  1047. For I

  1048. am the

  1049. Lord,

  1050. I

  1051. change

  1052. not,

  1053. therefore

  1054. the

  1055. sons of

  1056. Jacob

  1057. are not

  1058. consumed.

  1059. Or how

  1060. about this,

  1061. which is

  1062. a combination

  1063. of two

  1064. verses,

  1065. you're

  1066. probably

  1067. familiar

  1068. with,

  1069. Hebrews

  1070. 13.8

  1071. and

  1072. James

  1073. 1.17

  1074. For do

  1075. we not

  1076. read that

  1077. God is

  1078. the same

  1079. yesterday,

  1080. today,

  1081. and forever?

  1082. And in

  1083. him there

  1084. is no

  1085. variableness,

  1086. neither

  1087. shadow of

  1088. changing.

  1089. God is

  1090. God.

  1091. And what I

  1092. particularly

  1093. like,

  1094. given that

  1095. they believe

  1096. that God

  1097. was once

  1098. a man

  1099. on their

  1100. planet,

  1101. Moroni

  1102. 8.18

  1103. For I

  1104. know that

  1105. God is

  1106. not a

  1107. partial

  1108. God,

  1109. neither a

  1110. changeable

  1111. being,

  1112. but he

  1113. is unchangeable

  1114. from all

  1115. eternity to

  1116. all

  1117. eternity.

  1118. And just

  1119. to remind

  1120. you of

  1121. what the

  1122. church

  1123. teaches,

  1124. this is

  1125. Brigham Young,

  1126. who was

  1127. one of the

  1128. followers of

  1129. Joseph Smith,

  1130. and his

  1131. writings said

  1132. this,

  1133. The doctrine

  1134. that God

  1135. was once a

  1136. man and

  1137. has progressed

  1138. to become a

  1139. God is

  1140. unique to

  1141. this church.

  1142. How do

  1143. you feel

  1144. knowing that

  1145. God,

  1146. through his

  1147. own

  1148. experience,

  1149. knows all

  1150. that we

  1151. know regarding

  1152. the toils

  1153. and sufferings

  1154. of mortality?

  1155. So much

  1156. contradiction.

  1157. So much

  1158. confusion.

  1159. Why?

  1160. Well, I

  1161. don't think

  1162. I'm being

  1163. unfair to

  1164. them to

  1165. say that

  1166. the current

  1167. prophet of

  1168. the LDS

  1169. church can

  1170. reinterpret

  1171. scripture to

  1172. their own

  1173. view.

  1174. They can

  1175. add to

  1176. revolution.

  1177. They can

  1178. change

  1179. revolution.

  1180. They even

  1181. have a little

  1182. phrase that

  1183. says,

  1184. a live

  1185. prophet

  1186. trumps a

  1187. dead one.

  1188. So forget

  1189. about the

  1190. one said

  1191. before,

  1192. if it

  1193. doesn't

  1194. agree with

  1195. what the

  1196. current

  1197. one believes.

  1198. In fact,

  1199. sometimes

  1200. the prophet's

  1201. own views

  1202. change with

  1203. time.

  1204. I would

  1205. strongly argue

  1206. that this

  1207. was the

  1208. case with

  1209. Joseph Smith.

  1210. It's why

  1211. we can have

  1212. such seemingly

  1213. clear Trinitarian

  1214. statements in

  1215. the Book of

  1216. Mormon, but

  1217. yet later in

  1218. his life when

  1219. he's talking

  1220. at the funeral

  1221. of Elder

  1222. King Follett,

  1223. he's telling

  1224. you God

  1225. was once

  1226. a man

  1227. on the

  1228. planet.

  1229. In

  1230. conclusion,

  1231. I'd like

  1232. to re-emphasize

  1233. what I

  1234. mentioned

  1235. earlier.

  1236. What I've

  1237. given you

  1238. tonight is

  1239. hopefully just

  1240. a starting

  1241. point to

  1242. delving into

  1243. what does

  1244. the Bible

  1245. really teach

  1246. about God?

  1247. Because like

  1248. I started

  1249. off with

  1250. that Spurgeon

  1251. quote,

  1252. you need

  1253. to know

  1254. the truth

  1255. so you

  1256. can lay

  1257. it beside

  1258. false

  1259. teachings.

  1260. You don't

  1261. have to

  1262. memorize any

  1263. of the

  1264. verses I've

  1265. mentioned

  1266. to start

  1267. a conversation.

  1268. But please,

  1269. please,

  1270. please,

  1271. if you're

  1272. starting

  1273. conversations

  1274. with folks

  1275. of other

  1276. faith,

  1277. let your

  1278. elders know.

  1279. The reality

  1280. is we are

  1281. in a

  1282. spiritual

  1283. battle.

  1284. Our warfare

  1285. is not

  1286. against flesh

  1287. and bone.

  1288. I believe

  1289. there's

  1290. demonic

  1291. forces behind

  1292. the teachings

  1293. of the LDS

  1294. church and

  1295. many of the

  1296. other groups

  1297. you will come

  1298. to hear about.

  1299. It's a serious

  1300. issue.

  1301. It shouldn't

  1302. be taken

  1303. lightly.

  1304. It shouldn't

  1305. just be engaged

  1306. in because

  1307. you want to

  1308. win an

  1309. argument.

  1310. These are

  1311. people's souls

  1312. that are at

  1313. stake.

  1314. It's not

  1315. to be taken

  1316. lightly.

  1317. Please,

  1318. please involve

  1319. your elders

  1320. if you're

  1321. meeting with

  1322. missionaries,

  1323. Jehovah's

  1324. witnesses,

  1325. anyone of

  1326. a different

  1327. faith.

  1328. Once again,

  1329. when you

  1330. talk to

  1331. them,

  1332. ask them

  1333. what they

  1334. believe.

  1335. Give them

  1336. time.

  1337. One of the

  1338. most fruitful

  1339. conversations I

  1340. had with

  1341. LDS

  1342. missionaries

  1343. was over

  1344. pizza.

  1345. Sit with

  1346. them.

  1347. Get to

  1348. know them.

  1349. If it may

  1350. be so,

  1351. be like

  1352. Jesus.

  1353. Eat with

  1354. the tax

  1355. collectors

  1356. and sinners

  1357. of which,

  1358. believe it or

  1359. not,

  1360. you're one.

  1361. I am a

  1362. sinner.

  1363. Bond with

  1364. them.

  1365. Be a

  1366. friend.

  1367. You never

  1368. know where

  1369. it might

  1370. lead.

  1371. I pray it

  1372. leads to

  1373. their

  1374. salvation.

  1375. As I

  1376. mentioned,

  1377. only faith

  1378. in the

  1379. true Jesus,

  1380. the living

  1381. Jesus,

  1382. the one who

  1383. took on

  1384. flesh,

  1385. came to

  1386. this earth,

  1387. is the

  1388. resurrected

  1389. one.

  1390. He's the

  1391. only one

  1392. who can

  1393. save you.

  1394. We need

  1395. to be putting

  1396. our faith

  1397. and our

  1398. trust in

  1399. him.

  1400. Amen.

  1401. Amen.

  1402. He's the

  1403. only one

  1404. that can

  1405. save us

  1406. from our

  1407. sin.

  1408. Before I

  1409. leave you

  1410. tonight,

  1411. I have a

  1412. few books

  1413. I'd like

  1414. to recommend.

  1415. Two of the

  1416. ones that I

  1417. find most

  1418. helpful myself

  1419. are written

  1420. by a

  1421. Baptist

  1422. preacher in

  1423. the States

  1424. by the

  1425. name of

  1426. James White.

  1427. He's written

  1428. letters to a

  1429. Mormon elder

  1430. and also

  1431. Is the

  1432. Mormon

  1433. my brother?

  1434. If you're

  1435. going to

  1436. get any

  1437. book on

  1438. their faith,

  1439. that would

  1440. be the one

  1441. I'd recommend.

  1442. Another one

  1443. that I find

  1444. very useful

  1445. is questions

  1446. to ask

  1447. your Mormon

  1448. friend.

  1449. This is

  1450. really just

  1451. to get

  1452. them to

  1453. critically

  1454. analyze

  1455. what they

  1456. do

  1457. believe.

  1458. Bizarrely,

  1459. I'd recommend

  1460. this.

  1461. It's the

  1462. Book of

  1463. Mormon.

  1464. I will

  1465. leave this

  1466. copy here.

  1467. You'll

  1468. notice it's

  1469. got a lot

  1470. of little

  1471. colored tags.

  1472. This is

  1473. literally

  1474. because I've

  1475. done a lot

  1476. of asking

  1477. the Book of

  1478. Mormon what

  1479. it teaches.

  1480. I shared

  1481. some topics

  1482. with you

  1483. tonight.

  1484. Well, I

  1485. shared two.

  1486. So I'll

  1487. leave this.

  1488. I hope you

  1489. find it a

  1490. useful resource

  1491. for the

  1492. church.

  1493. Because what

  1494. this teaches

  1495. is not

  1496. what the

  1497. Mormon

  1498. missions will

  1499. be teaching

  1500. you.

  1501. It's what

  1502. they're asking

  1503. you to pray

  1504. about, but

  1505. it's not

  1506. what they

  1507. believe.

  1508. So it

  1509. could just

  1510. be a door,

  1511. a foot in

  1512. the door,

  1513. to sharing

  1514. the gospel.

  1515. But I'd

  1516. like to

  1517. close with

  1518. that quote

  1519. that I

  1520. read at

  1521. the start.

  1522. If a

  1523. crooked stick

  1524. is before

  1525. you, you

  1526. need not

  1527. explain how

  1528. crooked it

  1529. is.

  1530. Lay a

  1531. straight one

  1532. down beside

  1533. it, and

  1534. the work

  1535. is well

  1536. done.

  1537. Preach

  1538. the truth,

  1539. and error

  1540. will stand

  1541. abashed in

  1542. its presence.

  1543. Amen.
