  1. Thank you, Bridget and Katie. Good morning, everyone. Really good to have you with us,

  2. whether you're here in the church or on YouTube. I know we have a few visitors in the church this

  3. morning. You are particularly welcome as we now come to consider God's word.

  4. The year is 1830. The city is Dublin. And in a small hall on the south side of the city,

  5. a group of Christians are meeting together for the first time. They previously met in homes

  6. and they're now meeting in a hall. Among them, there is one young man who has been refused

  7. communion at churches around the city because he wouldn't join their membership role.

  8. There are others who are concerned about the established church and the dominance of the

  9. clergy, and in particular, that many churches will only allow communion if there are clergy,

  10. ordained clergy there to lead it. Others are looking for simplicity in their worship,

  11. to get back to how it was at the beginning in the New Testament. And so they meet and very simply,

  12. they pray together, they read from the Bible, and they take bread and wine to remember the Lord Jesus.

  13. Now some of you will recognize that this is a description of one of the early groups of what

  14. later became known as the Brethren movement. There were others in Plymouth and Bristol and elsewhere.

  15. My purpose is not to promote Brethren ideals, although I would happily do that, but rather choose as an

  16. example, and there are many, of a circumstance where there were people who felt there is a need to get

  17. back to the New Testament church and the way it did things. Traditions have grown up, and we want to

  18. strip these away and simply be obedient to what the Bible says. I could equally have used as my example

  19. the Reformation, or one or two of the splits after that, the formation of the Methodist Church,

  20. or the free churches in Scotland, or indeed some of the churches around our city that have sprang up

  21. in recent years. There has been many times a desire to get back to worshipping as the New Testament

  22. church did. And churches inevitably as they grow and as they become more organized, there is more

  23. tradition built up, and perhaps, perhaps we get away sometimes from the basic teaching of Scripture.

  24. Now, why is that that that happens? Well, I think it's quite simple. The New Testament doesn't set out to be

  25. a handbook on how we should do church in detail. We were looking recently at the book of Leviticus,

  26. and in Leviticus you get great detail about the sacrifices and offerings and the priests and the

  27. other things which were part of the Jewish faith. And they were prescribed, they were laid down in

  28. writing, this is how you will do it. There's very little of that in the New Testament about the church.

  29. We get some teaching, usually when something's gone wrong, and Paul or someone else is trying to correct it.

  30. We get snippets here and there which give us an insight into church life, particularly in the book of Acts,

  31. and how the early Christians did things. But there are not generally prescriptive details of this is how you must

  32. do things as a church. And because of that, I would be hesitant to criticize others who do it differently

  33. from ourselves. If they are Bible-believing Christians seeking to follow the Lord Jesus and to be obedient to

  34. his word, the fact that they see things in terms of church and organization a little bit different from me

  35. doesn't necessarily mean that I'm right and they're wrong. On the other hand, we do need to use the New

  36. Testament as the basis for everything we do. This is the word of God that has been handed down to us.

  37. And so it is good to look at what the New Testament says about church and to think, how does that apply

  38. to us today? Some things we can take directly and we can say we should do it the way the New Testament

  39. church did. Other things we might say, well, that is largely cultural or circumstances now are different.

  40. And so we will do things a little bit differently. That is largely why differences spring up between churches.

  41. But if we're thinking about how we should be and what we should do as a church, our starting point,

  42. I think, should be these verses that we've read in Acts chapter 2. This is what I've called church in the

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  43. raw. It is the very beginnings of the Christians meeting together and sharing a common life together

  44. and seeking to worship and to glorify God. And it gives us lots of principles, I think, we can follow

  45. as we seek to obey the Lord and to live as his church in our time. So we're going to go through

  46. these verses and think about what they are to teach us about the church and the key things about it.

  47. But before we do that, let's just take a second to orientate ourselves and remind ourselves where we

  48. are in the book of Acts. So over the last three weeks, we've looked at the ascension of the Lord Jesus,

  49. the choosing of an additional apostle, the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost,

  50. and Peter's great sermon on the day of Pentecost. And then at the end of that, the Bible records

  51. that about 3,000 were added to the 120 existing Christians. So there was a great revival in Jerusalem

  52. on the day of Pentecost. And the question then is, well, what happens next? You've got all these new

  53. Christians. How do you organize yourselves? How do you help them to grow in their faith and in their

  54. knowledge of the Lord Jesus? And what happened next is what will occupy Luke from the end of chapter 2

  55. through to the early verses of chapter 6. In the verses we're looking at today, we have, if you like,

  56. the basics of what the church did. And then in the remaining chapters, we have how it worked out

  57. in practice. Sometimes it worked well and the Holy Spirit really worked among them. Sometimes there

  58. were problems and the church had to deal with them and to make sure that it remained obedient to the

  59. Lord and to his word. But the verses we have today are very much the foundation for what will follow

  60. in the next few chapters. This is how the early church met together and what they did. And then we

  61. get a few examples of how things worked out in the following chapters. Now our passage today divides

  62. very easily into two sections. The first section is a single verse. It's verse 42. They devoted

  63. themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. And I've called

  64. these the priorities of the church. These were the things which were fundamental that they were eager

  65. to follow. The word that's used in verse 42, they devoted themselves, is the same word that's used back

  66. in chapter 1, where it says that Christians were constantly in prayer to God. It was the thing they

  67. did. It was the things that they focused on. So we're going to look at these priorities. And then from

  68. verse 43 down to verse 47, we have their practices. So how did the priorities work out in their everyday life

  69. as a church? What did they actually do? So we'll take these two sections and let's start out with the

  70. priorities. Now as we do that, I want to give you a question to think about. If you were setting the

  71. priorities for church life today, is there anything that you would add that is missing from verse 42?

  72. I'll leave you to think about that and we'll come back to it later. Is there any priority for church

  73. today that you don't find in verse 42 here? Well, let's look first at what we do find. And the first

  74. priority was the apostles' doctrine or the apostles' teaching. So you have new Christians. New Christians,

  75. probably all if not, or certainly most of them, who would have grown up in the Jewish faith.

  76. So they had the Old Testament background they would understand and would know, but they knew very

  77. little, most of them, about the Lord Jesus and what it really meant, this new faith that they had in him.

  78. So a key priority for the apostles as they looked at this wonderful group of new Christianers, so excited

  79. by those who had come to trust the Lord Jesus, a key priority was to make sure that they were taught

  80. well. And who better to teach them than the men who had been with Jesus for the three years of his

  81. ministry. Remember when they were choosing a new apostle, that was the key thing they required.

  82. It needed to be someone who had been with Jesus. And as these apostles set about leading this new church,

  83. then they had this reserve of all the experiences that they had walking alongside Jesus, all they had heard

  84. from him. They had brought to their recollection by the Holy Spirit, the things that they had heard and seen.

  85. And the things that the Spirit passed on to them were what had been passed to the Spirit by the Lord Jesus.

  86. That's what the Lord Jesus says in John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  87. So this Spirit-filled, Spirit-controlled group of men were able to teach those who were new in the faith

  88. and with authority, with the authority of the Lord Jesus, to help them to understand the truth.

  89. And the Christians were eager to hear it. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching.

  90. Now, we don't have the apostles in that sense today. We can't go to Philip and say,

  91. well, what did Jesus teach about this? We can't go to Matthew and say, well, what do you think Jesus

  92. would have done in this situation? But we do have our Bible. And our Bible, our New Testament,

  93. is the written down doctrine that the apostles have passed on to us. The human writers of the New

  94. Testament were apostles, or those who were writing with apostolic authority, often with assistance

  95. from the apostles themselves. And of course, all of them were writing down as the Spirit led them

  96. and gave them the words. So when we think about the apostles' doctrine today, what we should think

  97. about is our relationship with the Bible. That we should spend our time, that we should devote ourselves

  98. to understanding what it is that the Bible says and teaches us, and being obedient to it.

  99. That is fundamental to living as a Christian. It is fundamental to living as the church of the Lord Jesus,

  100. the apostles' doctrine.

  101. The second thing that Luke tells us is that they devoted themselves to fellowship, or actually he says,

  102. the fellowship. One translation I quite like was the New English Bible, which talked about the common life.

  103. And I think that gets across the meaning of the word that's used here.

  104. This was a group of people who did things together and who supported and encouraged one another.

  105. There was a love for the Lord Jesus first, but that was reflected too in a love for one another.

  106. And they spent time together. And when one was happy, all were happy.

  107. When one was grieving, all would grieve with them.

  108. When one was suffering, all would suffer alongside them.

  109. They had things in common. They supported one another.

  110. We'll come in a minute to the material side of things, which is covered later in the passage.

  111. But this was a group of people who were really committed to one another.

  112. They devoted themselves to the fellowship, to living together for the Lord Jesus.

  113. How important that is today as well.

  114. It's been a lot more difficult in some ways over the last year,

  115. when for long periods we haven't been able to meet together.

  116. And some people still don't feel able to come and meet at the church.

  117. And yet there have been lots of phone calls and lots of expressions of interest among church members,

  118. lots of support being given.

  119. And that's absolutely right.

  120. We should at all times have the interests of our Christian brothers and sisters at heart

  121. and seek to support and build them up in their faith.

  122. We should devote ourselves to the fellowship.

  123. Then the third thing that Luke lists is the breaking of bread against the breaking of the bread.

  124. It is the term that is used.

  125. Now there's some debate about what the breaking of bread might mean.

  126. The term is used in two senses in the New Testament.

  127. One is what we might call communion or the Lord's Supper.

  128. Meeting together to break bread.

  129. And the service that we'll be starting next Sunday morning,

  130. we tend to call the breaking of bread service because that is what we do.

  131. We meet to remember the Lord Jesus, to break bread and to drink the cup together.

  132. And that's one meaning in the New Testament.

  133. The other meaning is simply meeting together for a meal.

  134. Because when the Jews would have a meal,

  135. one of the first things they would do is that someone, usually the host,

  136. would give thanks to God for the food

  137. and then would break bread and would pass it around as an expression of friendship and of fellowship.

  138. You may remember in Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  139. when the Lord Jesus meets the couple going to Emmaus

  140. and they come to the house and the Lord Jesus,

  141. they invite them in for a meal,

  142. and the Lord Jesus gives thanks and breaks bread.

  143. And that's the point when they recognize him and realize who it is.

  144. Now there's no suggestion there that it's the Lord's Supper that's being celebrated at that point.

  145. It is simply they're having a meal and as part of that, bread is broken.

  146. So what does it mean in this passage?

  147. This expression is used twice in verse 42 and then again in verse 46.

  148. Well, I think the difficulty we have with that and understanding it

  149. is maybe a difficulty the first century Christians wouldn't have had.

  150. Because you met together for a meal and as part of that meal,

  151. you broke bread and you remembered the Lord Jesus.

  152. In the upper room with his disciples, as the Lord Jesus takes bread and breaks it,

  153. he's using something which was part of the Passover that they were celebrating at the time

  154. and he gives it a new spiritual significance.

  155. So as the Christians meet and in their homes, as they break bread,

  156. they say, let's remember the Lord Jesus together in the breaking of the bread

  157. and as we drink from the cup, let's remember him.

  158. So the two things went together.

  159. You had the meal of fellowship and friendship together

  160. and within that meal was perfectly natural and normal

  161. to break bread to remember the Lord Jesus.

  162. And of course, things changed as the church went on.

  163. And there was still a meal in the time of the Corinthians,

  164. but it was very much, I think, by that point that they met

  165. and they had the breaking of bread as a separate thing within the meal.

  166. And of course, the meal gradually dropped off in terms of normal church practice.

  167. But in verse 42, I'm fairly sure that the specific reference from Luke

  168. is to remembering the Lord Jesus in the breaking of bread,

  169. albeit as part of a meal.

  170. And how important it is that we too continue to remember the Lord Jesus.

  171. The normal context now is within a church.

  172. In the book of Acts, there were 3,000 odd Christians.

  173. They couldn't all meet together in one place,

  174. so they broke bread in homes.

  175. The normal context now would be we would come together in church to break bread.

  176. But of course, over the last period, when that's not always been possible,

  177. it's been good that some have been able to join over Zoom,

  178. as we've remembered the Lord and the church, and they have joined with us.

  179. And I think that's perfectly right and perfectly scriptural.

  180. We break bread.

  181. It is one of the priorities of the church.

  182. And those of us who are in the building later on,

  183. we won't break bread because there's no bread to break.

  184. We'll be taking crackers and grape juice,

  185. and the breaking is only symbolic,

  186. but it will remind us of the death of the Lord Jesus

  187. and all that he has done for us.

  188. And then finally, in the priorities of the church,

  189. there is prayer.

  190. Again, the original would say the prayers.

  191. So this isn't talking about the prayer,

  192. the pride time that we have at home.

  193. It's the church meeting together to pray with one another.

  194. Probably from later on in the chapter,

  195. it was often in the temple courts,

  196. a place where Jews would go to pray,

  197. the Christians would go to,

  198. and they would find an area there,

  199. and they would pray together.

  200. But the communal prayer,

  201. the coming together to lay hold on the Lord,

  202. to bring their thanksgiving and their request to him,

  203. that was a core aspect of early church life.

  204. And similarly, it should be today.

  205. Praying together is the powerhouse of the church

  206. and is the way we together can approach God

  207. and be drawn closer to him

  208. and also drawn closer to one another.

  209. I think over the last year or so,

  210. when we've had the Zoom prayer meetings,

  211. many of us have found them really helpful

  212. in just getting together to pray

  213. and a very simple way to bring our requests

  214. to the Lord Jesus.

  215. I would encourage you, if you're able to,

  216. join us on the Monday evenings in May

  217. for our prayer times.

  218. We're not having Thursday ones in May,

  219. just on Monday.

  220. Once a week, let as many of us as possible

  221. get together to pray

  222. and to bring our thanksgiving

  223. and our requests to the Lord.

  224. So four priorities of the church.

  225. The apostles' teaching,

  226. the fellowship,

  227. the breaking of bread,

  228. and prayer.

  229. And these very much should be four priorities

  230. of every church today.

  231. Then what about the practices?

  232. If these are the principles,

  233. how did they work out in practice?

  234. And that's what verses 43 to 47 are all about.

  235. And the first thing we see in verse 43 is power.

  236. God is at work.

  237. And God is very evidently at work.

  238. Everyone was filled with awe, it says,

  239. at the many wonders and signs

  240. performed by the apostles.

  241. Different between wonders and signs,

  242. I think with wonders,

  243. you ask how did that happen?

  244. With signs, you ask,

  245. why did that happen?

  246. Signs are God speaking in a way

  247. that will teach us more about himself.

  248. But one way or another,

  249. the apostles were doing wonderful things.

  250. We see a bit of that in chapter three,

  251. when there's a lame man in the temple

  252. and Peter, through the Spirit,

  253. is able to perform a miracle of healing on him.

  254. And that apparently was not a one-off event.

  255. That was something that happened very regularly

  256. in the early church.

  257. We might then ask,

  258. well, is that something that we should be looking for

  259. in our churches today?

  260. And this is where we get into questions

  261. about what is relevant today

  262. and what is different today.

  263. Our God hasn't changed.

  264. Our God is still powerful

  265. and is in control of all things

  266. and can do whatever he chooses to do.

  267. And yet in many of our churches,

  268. in our day,

  269. we don't see miraculous signs

  270. in the sense that Luke is talking about here.

  271. I think as we look through Scripture,

  272. as we look through the Bible,

  273. there were particular periods

  274. when signs and wonders were quite common.

  275. So we look at the time of Moses, for example,

  276. and the Israelites going through the wilderness

  277. and quite a number of miraculous things happening then.

  278. We look at the time of Elijah and Elisha.

  279. And again, in a national crisis,

  280. when the nation of Israel had gone

  281. as low as it possibly could

  282. under Ahab and Jezebel,

  283. God worked in miraculous ways

  284. to demonstrate his power.

  285. And we have it again in the New Testament,

  286. both with the apostles here

  287. and later on with Paul.

  288. And I think,

  289. and I'm not going to say this too firmly,

  290. but I think that it is right to say

  291. that through history,

  292. there have been times

  293. when there have been a great deal of miracles.

  294. God has been working miraculous ways

  295. at key points in human history

  296. and the plan of salvation.

  297. And there have been other times

  298. when miraculous things have been

  299. at least less common.

  300. And perhaps we're in one of these

  301. less common times just now.

  302. But if you want to discuss math with me later,

  303. I'll be very happy to.

  304. But the key thing,

  305. I think the key lesson from it is,

  306. what the apostles were doing

  307. with their wonders and signs

  308. was validating to people

  309. the reality of their message.

  310. They could say,

  311. here is God working with power among us.

  312. This is the evidence

  313. that what we are doing is from God.

  314. Now listen to our message

  315. and change your ways

  316. and come to put your trust

  317. in the Lord Jesus.

  318. And I think that is why

  319. the apostles mentioned in verse 42

  320. in terms of their teaching,

  321. verse 43 in terms of their power,

  322. the one helped to validate the other.

  323. Let's move on though

  324. and talk about what I've called provision.

  325. So verses 44 and 45 say,

  326. all the believers were together

  327. and had everything in common.

  328. They sold property and possessions

  329. to give to anyone who had need.

  330. The believers had everything in common.

  331. Now there's something again

  332. that's different from how we would

  333. see things as a church.

  334. We don't have all things in common.

  335. By and large,

  336. we live our own lives

  337. and we are responsible

  338. for our own finances.

  339. So is that wrong?

  340. Should we be going back

  341. to what the early Christians did?

  342. I don't believe so.

  343. I think this was something

  344. that was specifically relevant

  345. and important

  346. in the very early days of the church.

  347. And we don't see it happening,

  348. I don't think,

  349. as the church progresses.

  350. In Paul's epistles, for instance,

  351. the church would certainly support

  352. one another,

  353. but it wasn't that they had

  354. everything in common.

  355. However,

  356. I think perhaps we have got away

  357. from some of the underlying significance

  358. of these verses.

  359. Because we do tend to treat each other

  360. as being financially independent.

  361. And some of us are well off

  362. in material terms.

  363. Some of us are less so.

  364. And there are many Christians

  365. around the world

  366. who are in real poverty

  367. and who don't know

  368. where their next meal

  369. is coming from.

  370. And perhaps we have

  371. too much of a mindset

  372. that what I have,

  373. what I've earned

  374. through my work or whatever,

  375. that is mine.

  376. I will give some of it

  377. to the Lord's work.

  378. But essentially,

  379. that's my income

  380. and it's mine to do

  381. what I want to with it.

  382. have we lost that sense

  383. of if someone's in need

  384. and I'm able to meet that need,

  385. then my duty before the Lord

  386. is to do it.

  387. If I see someone

  388. who is struggling financially

  389. for reasons that are

  390. beyond their control,

  391. is it not my duty

  392. to help them in any way

  393. that I can?

  394. Perhaps these days

  395. we're too private,

  396. we're too proud

  397. to ask for help.

  398. And maybe many of us

  399. are too greedy

  400. to offer that help

  401. when we should.

  402. So let's take the challenge.

  403. If there are people

  404. we're aware of

  405. who are in physical need,

  406. what can I do,

  407. what can we as a church do

  408. to be able to help them

  409. and to give them

  410. the physical support

  411. that they need.

  412. The believers had

  413. everything in common.

  414. They sold and gave

  415. to anyone

  416. who had need.

  417. We'll come back to that again

  418. in later chapters of Acts.

  419. I won't say any more

  420. just now.

  421. Then the third thing

  422. that they did

  423. I've called participation.

  424. This is verse 46.

  425. Every day they continued

  426. to meet together

  427. in the temple courts.

  428. They broke bread

  429. in their homes

  430. and ate together

  431. with glad

  432. and sincere hearts.

  433. Every day

  434. they continued

  435. to meet together.

  436. We may wonder

  437. why they still went

  438. to the temple

  439. or the temple

  440. was the place

  441. where Jews went

  442. to worship.

  443. And I'm sure

  444. the early Christians

  445. were thinking

  446. well as the Jews see us,

  447. those who are not yet

  448. Christians see us

  449. and we can explain

  450. to them more

  451. about what the Lord

  452. Jesus has done,

  453. perhaps they too

  454. will come to know him.

  455. It was a natural place

  456. to go

  457. but equally there were times

  458. when it was better

  459. to meet in homes,

  460. to share a meal together,

  461. to share the Lord's Supper

  462. and to enjoy fellowship

  463. with one another.

  464. But the point is

  465. they were all participating

  466. in each other's lives.

  467. There were no hangers-on.

  468. There were no people

  469. who said

  470. well I'll come to church

  471. on a Sunday

  472. but that's all

  473. I'm going to do.

  474. The rest of the week

  475. is mine

  476. and I'm not going

  477. to have any contact

  478. with my Christian brothers

  479. and sisters.

  480. And how important it is

  481. if we are part of a church

  482. that we are active

  483. participants in it.

  484. That we're not just

  485. those who turn up

  486. and go away

  487. and perhaps you almost

  488. wouldn't notice

  489. if we weren't there.

  490. That we're engaged

  491. in the life,

  492. the fellowship,

  493. the service,

  494. the witness

  495. of the church.

  496. And we're engaged

  497. in the lives of others

  498. that we have

  499. opportunities

  500. to meet with them,

  501. to serve,

  502. to support

  503. and to encourage them.

  504. Again,

  505. the last year

  506. has made that

  507. very difficult

  508. in many ways.

  509. And perhaps

  510. there are some

  511. who have almost

  512. dropped off

  513. from church.

  514. You may be watching

  515. this morning

  516. but actually

  517. you've had very little

  518. contact with the church

  519. and very little involvement

  520. over the last year.

  521. Please consider

  522. what your participation

  523. in church

  524. should be.

  525. What you can do

  526. to enjoy fellowship

  527. with others

  528. and to build them up

  529. as you build yourself up

  530. and to serve

  531. the Lord Jesus.

  532. We have scope now

  533. to have more people

  534. at our services.

  535. Great to have some extras

  536. this morning

  537. from what we've had

  538. in the past.

  539. There is still room

  540. for more

  541. if you would like to come.

  542. Please consider

  543. getting more involved

  544. in the church

  545. if you have largely

  546. dropped off

  547. in recent months.

  548. And then the last thing

  549. under practice

  550. is that the church

  551. was praising God.

  552. It was a joyful church.

  553. Now we have two things

  554. to balance things here.

  555. Verse 43

  556. it says

  557. they were filled

  558. with awe.

  559. So on the one hand

  560. there was a great awe.

  561. There wasn't a flippancy

  562. about church.

  563. There was a recognition

  564. of what a great God

  565. we have

  566. and how a great privilege

  567. it is

  568. to be able

  569. to approach Him.

  570. But on the other hand

  571. there were glad

  572. and sincere hearts

  573. and there was

  574. praising God.

  575. Being a Christian

  576. and knowing the Lord Jesus

  577. should be a joyful

  578. experience

  579. for us.

  580. Yes there are bumps

  581. in the road.

  582. Yes there are times

  583. when life is

  584. really difficult.

  585. But we should

  586. if we know

  587. the Lord Jesus

  588. we should be

  589. reflecting on

  590. all the great blessings

  591. that we have

  592. in Him

  593. and the great future

  594. that He has planned

  595. for us.

  596. And we should be

  597. rejoicing in Him.

  598. Praise should be

  599. very much

  600. a feature

  601. of our times

  602. together.

  603. And praise is

  604. partly music.

  605. Music can really help us

  606. in praise.

  607. But it is also

  608. just appreciating

  609. together

  610. all that the Lord

  611. Jesus has done

  612. for us

  613. and all that He

  614. continues

  615. to do

  616. for us.

  617. So we have

  618. power,

  619. provision,

  620. participation,

  621. praise.

  622. Let's come back

  623. to the question

  624. that I asked

  625. you earlier.

  626. Is there

  627. a priority

  628. missing

  629. in verse

  630. 42?

  631. We have

  632. for those

  633. who are interested

  634. in becoming

  635. members of the church

  636. here,

  637. we do have membership

  638. though everyone

  639. is welcome

  640. to join the communion

  641. if they love

  642. the Lord Jesus.

  643. But we have

  644. a membership

  645. booklet

  646. and within

  647. that there's

  648. a little bit

  649. about the history

  650. of the church.

  651. I actually wrote

  652. that because

  653. I've been here

  654. forever so I

  655. know what's

  656. been going on.

  657. And within

  658. that I write

  659. something about

  660. the heritage

  661. which is still

  662. important for

  663. us in church

  664. today.

  665. So I say

  666. as part of that

  667. in accordance

  668. with Acts

  669. 2.42

  670. we give

  671. priority to

  672. Bible teaching,

  673. fellowship,

  674. the Lord's

  675. Supper,

  676. communion,

  677. and prayer.

  678. They are the

  679. priorities that

  680. are listed here.

  681. I then have

  682. another bullet

  683. that says

  684. we also

  685. give priority

  686. to personal

  687. witness,

  688. corporate

  689. evangelism,

  690. and mission

  691. both local

  692. and worldwide.

  693. And I hope

  694. you would agree

  695. that reaching

  696. out to others

  697. should be

  698. a priority

  699. of the church.

  700. So why then

  701. is it not

  702. listed in Acts

  703. 2?

  704. Why doesn't

  705. Luke have a

  706. fifth thing

  707. that says

  708. they sought

  709. to reach

  710. out to

  711. others?

  712. I think

  713. the answer

  714. to that

  715. is probably

  716. that they

  717. didn't need

  718. to be doing

  719. anything special

  720. to reach

  721. out.

  722. It wasn't

  723. something they

  724. said we

  725. really need

  726. to have

  727. an evangelistic

  728. effort.

  729. We need

  730. to have

  731. a gospel

  732. meeting

  733. or an

  734. evangelistic

  735. campaign

  736. or Christianity

  737. Explored

  738. or whatever

  739. so that we

  740. can help

  741. people to

  742. become

  743. Christians.

  744. Now all

  745. these things

  746. are good.

  747. I'm not

  748. knocking them.

  749. They're good

  750. and they're

  751. in many ways

  752. necessary in

  753. our time.

  754. But for

  755. the early

  756. Christians

  757. it was

  758. simply the

  759. case as

  760. they lived

  761. as Christians

  762. people could

  763. see that

  764. their lives

  765. were different

  766. and they

  767. were able

  768. to use

  769. opportunities

  770. to explain

  771. to them

  772. why their

  773. lives

  774. were different.

  775. So we have

  776. again examples

  777. in the following

  778. chapters

  779. particularly as

  780. Peter gets

  781. the opportunity

  782. after the

  783. healing of the

  784. lame man

  785. to talk about

  786. the power

  787. that he

  788. has

  789. through

  790. the Lord

  791. Jesus

  792. and to

  793. present the

  794. gospel

  795. through that.

  796. The early

  797. Christians

  798. it is the

  799. natural thing

  800. to do

  801. was to

  802. talk about

  803. their faith

  804. and to

  805. share it

  806. with others

  807. and to

  808. be very

  809. visible

  810. in the

  811. way that

  812. they

  813. did it.

  814. And it

  815. was effective.

  816. They didn't

  817. need an evangelistic

  818. campaign because

  819. it says in

  820. verse 47

  821. the Lord

  822. added to

  823. their number

  824. daily

  825. those who

  826. were being

  827. saved.

  828. Wouldn't be

  829. wonderful if

  830. we could say

  831. the Lord

  832. is adding

  833. to our

  834. number

  835. daily

  836. even

  837. weekly

  838. those who

  839. are being

  840. saved.

  841. I think that's

  842. a reminder to

  843. all of us

  844. that witness

  845. is something

  846. that should

  847. come naturally

  848. to us.

  849. I say naturally

  850. with some

  851. hesitancy because

  852. many of us

  853. find it very

  854. difficult but

  855. our relationship

  856. with the Lord

  857. Jesus should

  858. be something

  859. that we're

  860. happy to

  861. talk about

  862. and to

  863. share with

  864. others and

  865. to explain

  866. to them

  867. what it

  868. is that

  869. he has

  870. done for

  871. us.

  872. And yes

  873. evangelism is

  874. a priority.

  875. Reaching us

  876. to church is

  877. a priority.

  878. Great we've

  879. got a

  880. Christianity

  881. explored course.

  882. Please do

  883. consider who

  884. you could

  885. invite to

  886. that.

  887. But it's

  888. also the

  889. case that

  890. people should

  891. just be able

  892. to look at

  893. us and

  894. listen to

  895. us in a

  896. natural course

  897. of conversation

  898. and learn

  899. something about

  900. the Lord

  901. Jesus and

  902. faith in

  903. him.

  904. We need

  905. to be

  906. witnesses

  907. to him

  908. alongside

  909. the

  910. priorities

  911. that Luke

  912. lists.

  913. Now I

  914. started by

  915. talking about

  916. a group

  917. that separated

  918. from the

  919. established

  920. church.

  921. I want to

  922. end with

  923. someone who

  924. didn't

  925. separate from

  926. the established

  927. church.

  928. If you

  929. have the

  930. monthly

  931. newsletter or

  932. the paper

  933. copies in

  934. the church

  935. or it's

  936. online,

  937. you'll see

  938. that in

  939. his article

  940. Graham has

  941. reminded us

  942. that it

  943. would have

  944. been John

  945. Stott's

  946. 100th birthday

  947. last week.

  948. John

  949. Stott

  950. throughout

  951. his life

  952. was an

  953. Anglican,

  954. an Anglican

  955. bicker,

  956. and came

  957. under pressure

  958. a lot of

  959. times to

  960. move from

  961. the church

  962. and people

  963. saying,

  964. well,

  965. how can

  966. you stay

  967. in the

  968. church of

  969. England?

  970. John

  971. Stott

  972. was very

  973. convinced

  974. that was

  975. what God

  976. had called

  977. him to

  978. do.

  979. One of

  980. his last

  981. books is

  982. called

  983. The Living

  984. Church.

  985. The

  986. subtitle is

  987. Convictions

  988. of a

  989. Lifelong

  990. Pastor.

  991. And then

  992. as you see

  993. John

  994. Stott sharing

  995. something of

  996. what he's

  997. learned over

  998. many years of

  999. Christian ministry

  1000. about what it

  1001. is to be the

  1002. church and

  1003. to serve the

  1004. Lord Jesus

  1005. in it.

  1006. If you're

  1007. interested,

  1008. he also

  1009. includes the

  1010. reasons why

  1011. he has

  1012. stayed within

  1013. the Church

  1014. of England.

  1015. But I

  1016. want to

  1017. just finish

  1018. by reading

  1019. what he

  1020. says in

  1021. summary about

  1022. these verses

  1023. we've been

  1024. looking at

  1025. from Acts.

  1026. So John

  1027. Stott

  1028. says,

  1029. looking back

  1030. over the

  1031. essential

  1032. marks of

  1033. a living

  1034. church,

  1035. it is

  1036. apparent that

  1037. they all

  1038. have to

  1039. do with

  1040. the

  1041. believers'

  1042. relationships.

  1043. First,

  1044. they were

  1045. related to

  1046. the apostles.

  1047. They devoted

  1048. themselves to

  1049. the apostles'

  1050. teaching.

  1051. A living

  1052. church is

  1053. an apostolic

  1054. church.

  1055. Second,

  1056. they were

  1057. related to

  1058. each other.

  1059. They loved

  1060. each other.

  1061. A living

  1062. church is

  1063. a caring

  1064. and sharing

  1065. church.

  1066. Thirdly,

  1067. they were

  1068. related to

  1069. God.

  1070. They worshipped

  1071. God in the

  1072. breaking of

  1073. bread and

  1074. in prayers

  1075. with joy

  1076. and with

  1077. reverence.

  1078. A living

  1079. church is

  1080. a worshipping

  1081. church.

  1082. Fourthly,

  1083. they were

  1084. related to

  1085. the world

  1086. outside.

  1087. They reached

  1088. out and

  1089. witnessed

  1090. a living

  1091. church is

  1092. an evangelizing

  1093. church.

  1094. John Todd

  1095. has followed

  1096. the order

  1097. of Acts 2.

  1098. I might be

  1099. tempted to

  1100. slightly change

  1101. the order as

  1102. we think about

  1103. our priorities.

  1104. Because the

  1105. first thing we

  1106. need to have

  1107. is the

  1108. relationship

  1109. with God.

  1110. If we don't

  1111. have that

  1112. relationship,

  1113. then we're

  1114. not part of

  1115. the church

  1116. at all.

  1117. So all of

  1118. us need to

  1119. have our

  1120. trust in

  1121. the Lord

  1122. Jesus,

  1123. the one

  1124. who died

  1125. for us,

  1126. and you

  1127. can bring

  1128. us forgiveness

  1129. for all

  1130. the wrong

  1131. that we've

  1132. done in

  1133. our lives.

  1134. That is the

  1135. starting point,

  1136. and then our

  1137. lives should

  1138. be an

  1139. ongoing

  1140. building of

  1141. that

  1142. relationship

  1143. with God.

  1144. And then

  1145. we can

  1146. move on.

  1147. We have

  1148. the relationship

  1149. with Scripture

  1150. next,

  1151. perhaps,

  1152. as we seek

  1153. to learn

  1154. more about

  1155. what God

  1156. wants to

  1157. teach us

  1158. and what

  1159. it means

  1160. to live

  1161. as a

  1162. disciple

  1163. of Jesus.

  1164. We have

  1165. the relationship

  1166. with one

  1167. another,

  1168. the fellowship

  1169. that we enjoy

  1170. as we support

  1171. each other,

  1172. and then

  1173. we have

  1174. the relationship

  1175. with those

  1176. who are not

  1177. yet Christians

  1178. as we would

  1179. seek to

  1180. witness to

  1181. them.

  1182. Let's all

  1183. challenge ourselves

  1184. on these

  1185. four relationships

  1186. as individuals,

  1187. as a church.

  1188. Have we got

  1189. them all

  1190. right?

  1191. Our relationship

  1192. with God,

  1193. our relationship

  1194. with Scripture,

  1195. our relationship

  1196. with one another,

  1197. our relationship

  1198. with those

  1199. outside the

  1200. church.

  1201. And if we

  1202. find we're

  1203. lacking in any

  1204. of these

  1205. priorities,

  1206. let's resolve

  1207. to put it

  1208. right and

  1209. through with

  1210. God's help

  1211. to be more

  1212. like the

  1213. church that

  1214. he intends

  1215. us to be.

  1216. Let's pray

  1217. together.

  1218. Our Father,

  1219. we thank you

  1220. for your

  1221. word to us

  1222. this morning.

  1223. We thank you

  1224. for this great

  1225. passage that

  1226. reminds us

  1227. of what the

  1228. early church

  1229. did, of what

  1230. its priorities

  1231. were, what

  1232. its practices

  1233. were.

  1234. Help us to

  1235. get our

  1236. priorities right,

  1237. that we may

  1238. have a living

  1239. relationship with

  1240. you, a real

  1241. relationship with

  1242. your word,

  1243. strong relations

  1244. with one

  1245. another and

  1246. a desire to

  1247. reach others

  1248. for the

  1249. Lord Jesus.

  1250. And help

  1251. each of us

  1252. to grow in

  1253. our faith and

  1254. our knowledge

  1255. of the Lord

  1256. Jesus and to

  1257. support one

  1258. another as a

  1259. church as we

  1260. do that.

  1261. We pray you'll

  1262. be with us

  1263. now as we

  1264. move on,

  1265. that you'll be

  1266. with those who

  1267. are leaving us

  1268. now, who have

  1269. been with us

  1270. on YouTube,

  1271. that your blessing

  1272. will be with them

  1273. over the coming

  1274. week.

  1275. And be with

  1276. those of us

  1277. in the church

  1278. now as we

  1279. move on to

  1280. remember the

  1281. Lord Jesus

  1282. together.

  1283. We give you

  1284. our thanks in

  1285. his name.

  1286. Amen.
