  1. Well, folks, great to see you this morning.

  2. It's my first time actually back in the building

  3. since we've been allowed just a few more people.

  4. So it is great to see more of you here.

  5. And just for the place to feel a bit back to what it was before.

  6. Can you remember those days when we used to all pack in here and meet?

  7. It was great.

  8. And we should be so thankful to God for his common grace to us as a country

  9. that this is even possible.

  10. So let's not lose sight of that.

  11. And let's just grab the privilege of both horns

  12. and let's turn to God's word this morning.

  13. Acts chapter 3.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  14. I want you to come there with me if you've got your Bibles.

  15. We're just going to dive straight into this wonderful passage

  16. as we continue on in our series in the book of Acts.

  17. Now, you up for a few fun facts as we begin?

  18. Yeah?

  19. A couple of fun facts for you to do with listening.

  20. Okay?

  21. Apparently the average person in the UK, not calling any of you average,

  22. but the average person in the UK has 27 conversations a day.

  23. Thought it was quite interesting this week when I learned it.

  24. Maybe you can think about it in your own life.

  25. Is that true?

  26. 27 conversations.

  27. Off the back of that, here's the one I found even more interesting.

  28. Apparently, in each of those conversations,

  29. within the first eight seconds,

  30. we have decided whether we're going to listen or not.

  31. Quite interesting, isn't it?

  32. Glad we're not doing tea and coffee after the service today.

  33. Could be a little awkward to check if you're listening.

  34. But eight seconds is what we're willing to give it, apparently.

  35. Which is shocking when you think about it.

  36. Our attention span these days is eight seconds.

  37. If you're in need of a humbling this morning,

  38. know that a goldfish has one of nine.

  39. But eight seconds, apparently, is all we're willing to give it.

  40. Now, what do they say is always true about observational humour?

  41. Why is it funny?

  42. It's funny because it's true.

  43. Yeah?

  44. Funny because it's true.

  45. What we need to understand is that

  46. I think those facts make a legit point.

  47. Whether we realise or not,

  48. we're walking around asking ourselves subconsciously,

  49. why should I listen to you?

  50. Why should I listen to you?

  51. Seems fitting this week of all weeks, doesn't it?

  52. Election week.

  53. Why should I listen to you?

  54. The thing for us to see is we're not the first generation

  55. who kind of lives our lives according to that maxim.

  56. Okay?

  57. I think Luke, as he pens Acts,

  58. is well aware that Theophilus and his generation,

  59. as they read this book,

  60. are asking them that precise question

  61. as they come to chapter three.

  62. Particularly at this point in the story of Acts.

  63. If you've got it there,

  64. flick back to chapter two

  65. and kind of refresh yourself

  66. as to what we saw a few weeks ago.

  67. Okay?

  68. What's going on in Acts chapter two?

  69. The gospel has publicly burst onto the scene.

  70. Day of Pentecost.

  71. Peter preaches.

  72. The spirit moves.

  73. 3,000 people are converted.

  74. Okay?

  75. That's what the kids today would call scenes,

  76. isn't it?

  77. What a scene that is.

  78. 3,000 people converted.

  79. But that was just one day,

  80. let's be honest.

  81. Right?

  82. One day.

  83. I mean, are his,

  84. Peter and his message,

  85. are they just another one-hit wonder?

  86. Right?

  87. Just one day.

  88. Are they just another one-hit wonder?

  89. World's full of them, isn't it?

  90. Gina G, Sinead O'Connor,

  91. crash test dummies,

  92. pick your generation.

  93. Or is it a classic example

  94. of a kind of phase

  95. that people react to,

  96. one that will come and go, right?

  97. Kind of like flares,

  98. if some of you remember those things.

  99. And besides, let's be honest,

  100. anyone, if they try hard enough,

  101. can attract a crowd.

  102. Yeah?

  103. If you want proof of that,

  104. just go to the Royal Mile

  105. festival time in August.

  106. Anyone who stands up

  107. and shouts with a few colors,

  108. they can draw a crowd to come

  109. and listen to what they've got to say.

  110. So, why should we listen to Peter?

  111. Particularly as he says

  112. in verse 22 of chapter 3,

  113. we've got it there,

  114. quoting Moses,

  115. listen to him as he tells us,

  116. listen to Jesus.

  117. Do you see it?

  118. Listen to Jesus.

  119. Cracking question.

  120. Why should I listen to him?

  121. Think in Acts chapter 3,

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  122. Luke gives us two big reasons

  123. why we should listen.

  124. But before we get there,

  125. let me just say,

  126. whoever you are here today,

  127. our souls need this.

  128. They need this.

  129. If you're not a Christian here today,

  130. right,

  131. you're going to meet a crowd of people here

  132. who have got Jesus wrong.

  133. Right?

  134. It's the kind of point of the sermon.

  135. You have got him wrong.

  136. And they're being called

  137. to change their minds

  138. as to who Jesus is.

  139. And it's not just kind of outing them

  140. that they've done bad stuff.

  141. This is an invitation

  142. to come and know

  143. the God of the Bible.

  144. Come and know

  145. the blessing

  146. of knowing

  147. him.

  148. And you're going to be presented today

  149. with a God

  150. who is way bigger

  151. and way better

  152. than I bet

  153. that you think he is.

  154. And what he's offering you

  155. in the person of Jesus

  156. is incredible.

  157. Right?

  158. Maybe you're a Christian here today.

  159. Friends,

  160. I want

  161. our hearts

  162. to be strengthened

  163. by this.

  164. Because I tell you

  165. what I feel like often.

  166. Okay?

  167. For Chloe's birthday,

  168. she's upstairs,

  169. I can say this.

  170. For her birthday,

  171. we got her a huge,

  172. I say we,

  173. Alex,

  174. we got her a huge

  175. helium unicorn balloon.

  176. Right?

  177. She loved it.

  178. Loved it.

  179. But her birthday

  180. was at the beginning

  181. of March.

  182. Right?

  183. And one who likes

  184. things tidy,

  185. I kind of broached

  186. the subject

  187. as it sits in our house.

  188. Is it time

  189. that the balloon

  190. went down?

  191. Tell you what,

  192. I'm never making

  193. that mistake again.

  194. Okay?

  195. That didn't go down well,

  196. which is more than

  197. can be said of the balloon.

  198. But what I've observed

  199. as I've watched

  200. this balloon

  201. in our home

  202. is it just

  203. gradually,

  204. gradually

  205. has deflated.

  206. Slowly,

  207. slowly

  208. has leaked.

  209. Once it was

  210. banging off the ceiling,

  211. now it's just

  212. hovering above the floor

  213. because it's just

  214. leaked,

  215. leaked.

  216. And how often

  217. is that true

  218. for us spiritually?

  219. We leak the gospel.

  220. Don't we?

  221. We just leak

  222. the promises.

  223. I take our eyes

  224. off of Christ.

  225. We need a glorious

  226. picture of Him

  227. to be pulsing

  228. through our veins.

  229. The glory

  230. of who this God is.

  231. Friends,

  232. that's why we need

  233. Acts chapter 3

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  234. in our systems today.

  235. That's why we need

  236. to breathe it in

  237. in asking that God

  238. through His Spirit,

  239. the glorious gospel

  240. promises that we

  241. encounter here.

  242. He would breathe

  243. life into our lungs

  244. again.

  245. So the invitation

  246. here is to come

  247. and drink this in,

  248. come and breathe

  249. this in.

  250. This is

  251. Jesus Christ.

  252. So back to

  253. our central question,

  254. why should I listen

  255. to Him?

  256. Well, here's what

  257. Luke does.

  258. He gives us

  259. two reasons.

  260. Firstly,

  261. he tells us about

  262. the miracle

  263. that's solid proof

  264. of the future.

  265. The miracle

  266. that's solid proof

  267. of the future.

  268. So here are

  269. Peter and John

  270. verse 1,

  271. if you come to

  272. the text,

  273. verse 1.

  274. See where they're

  275. going?

  276. Off to the temple

  277. to pray.

  278. Love that they're

  279. still being obedient

  280. at this point

  281. in the story.

  282. Off to the temple

  283. to pray.

  284. And they encounter

  285. a man.

  286. Now notice the details.

  287. None of this is wasted.

  288. Notice the details

  289. about this man.

  290. His is a tragic story

  291. really when you

  292. think about it.

  293. What are we told?

  294. He's a man

  295. lame from birth.

  296. So he's never

  297. walked a day

  298. in his life.

  299. And each day

  300. he's taken

  301. to the temple

  302. precinct

  303. by a group

  304. of people.

  305. I don't know,

  306. maybe these people

  307. are in it

  308. for the money.

  309. That's why they

  310. take him there.

  311. They get a cut

  312. of it.

  313. I don't know.

  314. But they take him

  315. every day

  316. to the temple

  317. precinct

  318. so that he can

  319. beg for money.

  320. Okay?

  321. Now I think

  322. if this is

  323. happening daily,

  324. then I think

  325. we can assume

  326. that he is

  327. what we'd call

  328. part of the furniture.

  329. Right?

  330. Part of the furniture.

  331. People see him

  332. every day.

  333. People know him

  334. to say hello to.

  335. I mean,

  336. you know what it's like.

  337. I remember I used

  338. to walk from

  339. side of town

  340. across town

  341. to here.

  342. Every day

  343. you pass the same

  344. people on the streets.

  345. Every day

  346. you know where they sit.

  347. You notice when

  348. they're not there.

  349. It's kind of

  350. what's going on

  351. with this man.

  352. He's there every day.

  353. Part of the furniture.

  354. And I'm sure

  355. the irony

  356. wouldn't have been

  357. lost on Theophilus

  358. and the original readers

  359. that the man,

  360. do you see where he's sitting?

  361. The man who's sitting

  362. at the beautiful gate

  363. has anything other

  364. than a beautiful life.

  365. But the other irony

  366. which they're about to get,

  367. we're about to get

  368. both barrels,

  369. is that the man

  370. who can't walk

  371. is about to become

  372. the subject

  373. of the first miracle

  374. and acts

  375. associated with

  376. the gospel

  377. that's going to

  378. sprint throughout

  379. the world.

  380. Looks into irony.

  381. Love it.

  382. That's what the gospel

  383. is going to do.

  384. It's going to sprint

  385. throughout the world.

  386. So Peter and John

  387. are passing this man

  388. and presumably

  389. for no other reason

  390. than they have been

  391. prompted by the Holy Spirit.

  392. They stop to speak to him.

  393. They've got no money

  394. but what they do have

  395. is the authority

  396. of the risen Christ.

  397. Okay?

  398. And they say to the man

  399. in verse 6,

  400. stand up and walk.

  401. And the man,

  402. not gradually

  403. or partially

  404. notice the detail

  405. in the text

  406. immediately

  407. does just that.

  408. It's incredible,

  409. isn't it?

  410. Incredible that this

  411. is happening.

  412. What's even more

  413. incredible,

  414. I found in the story,

  415. what does the man

  416. do next?

  417. I mean,

  418. presumably if you think

  419. about it,

  420. he could have gone up,

  421. he could have done

  422. a few laps

  423. in the temple courts,

  424. people's jaws

  425. would have hit the ground,

  426. he could have posed

  427. for a few photos,

  428. he could have gone

  429. back to begging

  430. and he would have

  431. made a fortune,

  432. would he not?

  433. But there's newfound

  434. faith in this man's

  435. heart.

  436. He understands

  437. what has happened,

  438. I think.

  439. And verse 8,

  440. he enters the temple,

  441. I bet he's never been

  442. in there in his life.

  443. Here is a worshiper,

  444. what's he doing?

  445. Walking and leaping

  446. and praising God.

  447. I mean,

  448. somebody should really

  449. write a kid's song

  450. about that,

  451. shouldn't they?

  452. Walking and leaping

  453. and praising God.

  454. And here's where Luke,

  455. I think,

  456. brings in the eyewitness

  457. details.

  458. Come with me,

  459. verse 9,

  460. all the people saw him.

  461. Verse 10,

  462. they recognized him,

  463. so they're saying

  464. to themselves,

  465. hey,

  466. that's the guy,

  467. that's the guy.

  468. We see every day

  469. and filled with

  470. wondering questions,

  471. they kind of testifying

  472. to one another

  473. that we've never seen

  474. anything like this before.

  475. So headline,

  476. Temple Today,

  477. News at 6,

  478. Lame Man Walks.

  479. Lame Man Walks.

  480. Now,

  481. lest we think

  482. this is just a nice event,

  483. I think there's two big things

  484. going on in the background here.

  485. Okay,

  486. firstly,

  487. this is proof

  488. of the authority

  489. that the risen Jesus

  490. has given to his apostles

  491. to authenticate them

  492. and their message,

  493. what they're doing

  494. in the eyes

  495. of the watching world.

  496. Okay,

  497. in other words,

  498. this is heaven's

  499. stamp of approval

  500. on what they are doing

  501. and what they are saying.

  502. Now,

  503. that's important.

  504. Okay,

  505. I'll tell you why

  506. that's important,

  507. because their testimony

  508. about Jesus

  509. is going to be

  510. the foundation

  511. on which the church

  512. is built.

  513. Okay,

  514. if you remember last week

  515. back to the end of chapter 2,

  516. what were the disciples

  517. devoting themselves to?

  518. Right?

  519. What were they devoting

  520. themselves to?

  521. The apostles'

  522. teaching.

  523. One of the things,

  524. right?

  525. The apostles' teaching.

  526. So,

  527. in the years to come,

  528. if you're reading Acts,

  529. you wonder what this

  530. Christianity business

  531. is all about.

  532. You're thinking about

  533. joining a local church.

  534. That's a really good fact

  535. to know.

  536. When you can't

  537. physically see Jesus,

  538. right?

  539. It's the same for us today.

  540. You can trust

  541. what the apostles

  542. have said about him.

  543. Right?

  544. We can do that today.

  545. We can pick up our Bibles.

  546. We can read what they were saying.

  547. Eyewitness details.

  548. Bang,

  549. we can trust it.

  550. Okay?

  551. And so,

  552. this miracle,

  553. in that sense,

  554. is solid proof

  555. of the future.

  556. Right?

  557. But in another sense,

  558. here I think we get

  559. a wonderful foretaste

  560. of God's new creation.

  561. Think back,

  562. if you can remember it back,

  563. to the reading that

  564. Jenny brought us

  565. from Isaiah chapter 35.

    Isaiah 35 chapter mention

  566. Right?

  567. Isaiah's speaking

  568. to his generation

  569. and he's pleading with them.

  570. Have you heard it

  571. in the language there?

  572. Take courage.

  573. Take heart.

  574. It's a terrible time

  575. for the nation.

  576. A visual.

  577. Take heart.

  578. God will visit us.

  579. God will save us.

  580. Keep trusting in him.

  581. And Isaiah's describing

  582. the new creation

  583. that God will bring in.

  584. What he will do

  585. after he's visited his people

  586. in the times to come.

  587. He's going to bring in

  588. this renewed creation.

  589. And he describes

  590. what it's going to be like

  591. when creation is freed

  592. from its bondage

  593. and its doing,

  594. its glorifying.

  595. I was made for this

  596. thing.

  597. Right?

  598. I think it was C.S. Lewis

  599. who described

  600. creation at the minute

  601. like an orchestra

  602. all there

  603. with a sheet over the top

  604. collecting dust

  605. just waiting on its

  606. conductor.

  607. This is how it's described.

  608. The eyes of the blind

  609. shall be opened,

  610. the ears of the death

  611. unstopped.

  612. Then the lame man

  613. shall leap like a deer

  614. and the tongue of the mute

  615. sing for joy.

  616. Does that sound familiar?

  617. Right?

  618. Here is God's

  619. kingdom of light

  620. through the person

  621. work of Christ

  622. smashing into the darkness

  623. now.

  624. Little foretaste

  625. that one day

  626. it's going to eradicate

  627. darkness completely.

  628. Isn't it amazing

  629. in light of everything

  630. that we've lived through

  631. over the last season?

  632. And so we can gaze

  633. at this man

  634. and

  635. Peter's words

  636. in verse 16

  637. he's in perfect health.

  638. Here is a wee taster

  639. wee taster

  640. of what it's going to be like

  641. in God's new creation

  642. for God's people of faith.

  643. It's a wonderful picture

  644. friends.

  645. You know I've got a friend

  646. who's a

  647. who used to be a

  648. pastor who worked

  649. down in London.

  650. I remember him

  651. telling me a story

  652. about being invited

  653. by one of his

  654. congregation members

  655. to come to the

  656. one of the very first

  657. skyscrapers

  658. in Canary Wharf.

  659. Right?

  660. It's a very different gig

  661. down south

  662. I'll tell you that.

  663. Okay?

  664. But this is what he did.

  665. Canary Wharf

  666. up he went

  667. in the lift

  668. top of the skyscraper

  669. and he looks out

  670. on what is just

  671. a huge building site.

  672. Huge building site.

  673. And what he does

  674. is he looks to his side

  675. and what he notices

  676. is a little

  677. scale model.

  678. Right?

  679. I think it was quite

  680. a big one actually.

  681. A big scale model.

  682. As if to say

  683. here is what

  684. it's going to look like.

  685. Here's the first one.

  686. Here's the little taster.

  687. But here is what

  688. it's going to look like.

  689. And let me tell you

  690. it's going to be glorious.

  691. It's going to be glorious.

  692. I think that's what's

  693. going on here.

  694. You know some of you

  695. might be asking

  696. and it's a really

  697. good question

  698. to ask.

  699. Right?

  700. If this man had faith

  701. and was healed

  702. does that mean

  703. that anyone

  704. who has faith

  705. God will always

  706. heal them?

  707. Right?

  708. Let me just say for a minute

  709. I think we're best

  710. to understand

  711. instant miracles

  712. like this

  713. and Luke's really

  714. goes to length

  715. to show us that

  716. doesn't he?

  717. The immediacy of it.

  718. I think they're unique

  719. to this time

  720. in that they

  721. authenticate

  722. the apostles

  723. at this moment

  724. in history

  725. which is really

  726. important.

  727. And I think in that

  728. sense we'd be wise

  729. to understand

  730. that narrative

  731. is not always

  732. normative.

  733. You can't just draw

  734. a straight line

  735. between then

  736. and now.

  737. But generally speaking

  738. can God heal today?

  739. Of course God

  740. can heal today.

  741. Okay?

  742. We pray all the time

  743. we've been doing

  744. over the last season

  745. in our prayer meetings

  746. for those who are

  747. sick in our church

  748. family.

  749. Lord, by your grace

  750. and your power

  751. would they get better?

  752. Would you give

  753. the doctors

  754. the skills that

  755. they need to

  756. operate,

  757. to treat?

  758. And never

  759. underestimate

  760. God's common

  761. grace to us

  762. through everyday

  763. things.

  764. Medicine, right?

  765. I was praising

  766. God this week

  767. had a thumping

  768. headache

  769. praising him

  770. for paracetamol.

  771. Right?

  772. You can work

  773. through these things.

  774. It says

  775. common grace

  776. to us.

  777. Can he?

  778. Yes.

  779. Will he?

  780. Friends,

  781. in this life

  782. he might

  783. but he might not.

  784. Okay?

  785. But regardless

  786. here's what I want

  787. you to know.

  788. Because of his

  789. great fatherly

  790. care and love

  791. for us

  792. in Christ

  793. we've got

  794. to see here

  795. that one day

  796. through faith

  797. on this day

  798. he absolutely

  799. will.

  800. he will.

  801. To quote

  802. Don Carson

  803. who was speaking

  804. about how he

  805. deals with

  806. his own

  807. aches and

  808. pains and

  809. joys and

  810. sorrows of

  811. life as he

  812. grows older

  813. he said

  814. I often

  815. remind myself

  816. that I'm

  817. not suffering

  818. from anything

  819. that a good

  820. resurrection

  821. won't fix.

  822. And I think

  823. this is what

  824. this is screaming

  825. to us

  826. and friends

  827. I don't want

  828. to say that

  829. lightly.

  830. I know

  831. some of

  832. us are

  833. going through

  834. today

  835. extremely

  836. tough

  837. things

  838. right?

  839. Extremely

  840. tough

  841. things.

  842. But wouldn't

  843. we all

  844. take courage

  845. in Christ

  846. that one

  847. day he

  848. will come

  849. he is the

  850. conductor

  851. of the orchestra

  852. who will come

  853. and bring in

  854. God's new

  855. creation.

  856. These things

  857. will be

  858. distant

  859. memories.

  860. And let me

  861. just ask

  862. friends to

  863. some of

  864. us all

  865. of us

  866. do we

  867. need to

  868. be reminded

  869. of this.

  870. Okay this

  871. is our

  872. forever home

  873. this is our

  874. future.

  875. Remember it's

  876. popular in our

  877. generation today

  878. when we're

  879. talking about

  880. houses I

  881. think because

  882. it's so hard

  883. to get on

  884. the house

  885. market people

  886. say now

  887. that you've

  888. got it is

  889. that your

  890. forever home?

  891. No it's

  892. not.

  893. No it's

  894. not.

  895. Here is

  896. our forever

  897. home.

  898. Friends to

  899. some of us

  900. need to be

  901. reminded of

  902. that.

  903. Let me ask

  904. you who can

  905. you be

  906. speaking to

  907. this week

  908. about the

  909. truth of

  910. that?

  911. Okay let me

  912. just tell you

  913. about one of

  914. my favourite

  915. moments from

  916. sport over

  917. the last few

  918. years.

  919. I don't know

  920. if you remember

  921. this the moment

  922. in the world

  923. triathlon series

  924. in Mexico.

  925. Alistair

  926. Brownlee

  927. helping his

  928. brother Johnny

  929. who's fallen

  930. towards the

  931. finish line

  932. gets under

  933. him and

  934. helps him

  935. towards the

  936. finish line

  937. keep on

  938. going.

  939. It's a

  940. great story

  941. I loved

  942. it.

  943. Tell you

  944. what so

  945. often it

  946. feels like

  947. the Christian

  948. life does

  949. it not?

  950. Sometimes

  951. we're

  952. Alistair

  953. sometimes

  954. we're

  955. Johnny.

  956. It's true

  957. isn't it?

  958. Friends the

  959. question is

  960. we need to

  961. be a

  962. community

  963. who is

  964. getting

  965. alongside

  966. one another

  967. who's

  968. sitting

  969. with one

  970. another

  971. who's

  972. listing

  973. to one

  974. another

  975. who's

  976. entering

  977. into

  978. other

  979. people's

  980. each

  981. other's

  982. pain

  983. who's

  984. praying

  985. for one

  986. another

  987. and most

  988. importantly

  989. is reminding

  990. ourselves

  991. of the

  992. future that

  993. is ours

  994. because of

  995. our king

  996. and our

  997. God is

  998. with us

  999. now.

  1000. So who

  1001. can you

  1002. be playing

  1003. that role

  1004. to this

  1005. week?

  1006. Bringing

  1007. this wonderful

  1008. truth of

  1009. what God

  1010. is going

  1011. to do

  1012. in the

  1013. future in

  1014. Christ

  1015. bringing

  1016. it home

  1017. to each

  1018. other's

  1019. lives

  1020. because this

  1021. miracle

  1022. is solid

  1023. proof of

  1024. the future

  1025. and secondly

  1026. Luke presents

  1027. us with

  1028. the voice

  1029. that stands

  1030. alone in

  1031. the present.

  1032. Now back

  1033. in the text

  1034. do you see

  1035. the bewildered

  1036. crowd

  1037. wondering

  1038. what's going

  1039. on here?

  1040. Verse 11

  1041. Peter offers

  1042. them an

  1043. explanation.

  1044. He offers

  1045. them a

  1046. sermon

  1047. really

  1048. but the

  1049. sermons

  1050. are always

  1051. explanations

  1052. of what's

  1053. happened.

  1054. And the

  1055. heart of

  1056. this sermon

  1057. is that the

  1058. people and

  1059. God have

  1060. different

  1061. opinions of

  1062. Jesus.

  1063. Okay look

  1064. in the text

  1065. God verse

  1066. 13 has

  1067. glorified his

  1068. servant Jesus

  1069. really important

  1070. for us to

  1071. see that.

  1072. That's what

  1073. this God

  1074. has done.

  1075. This is the

  1076. resurrection

  1077. the ascension

  1078. the glorification

  1079. is the

  1080. father's

  1081. world worldwide

  1082. declaration of

  1083. the approval

  1084. of the work

  1085. of his son

  1086. and his

  1087. affection for

  1088. his son.

  1089. Friends and of

  1090. course to be a

  1091. Christian is by

  1092. the work of the

  1093. spirit to come

  1094. and share in

  1095. the father's

  1096. love for the

  1097. son and the

  1098. son's love for

  1099. the father to

  1100. enter into

  1101. this knowing

  1102. this triune

  1103. God.

  1104. This is what

  1105. God thinks of

  1106. his son and

  1107. yet the tragedy

  1108. is that the

  1109. people have a

  1110. different view.

  1111. Verse 15

  1112. Peter says

  1113. you and the

  1114. accusations come

  1115. you killed the

  1116. author of life.

  1117. Now just get

  1118. your head around

  1119. that.

  1120. Right?

  1121. You killed the

  1122. author of life.

  1123. You rejected

  1124. the holy and

  1125. righteous one.

  1126. So he's making

  1127. it clear that

  1128. they've got

  1129. Jesus badly

  1130. wrong and the

  1131. miracle proves

  1132. it.

  1133. And yet here's

  1134. what this man's

  1135. perfect health is

  1136. proof of.

  1137. You killed him

  1138. but God

  1139. verse 18

  1140. you killed

  1141. but God

  1142. fulfilled.

  1143. See it?

  1144. Verse 18

  1145. fulfilled.

  1146. And this is

  1147. what the Bible

  1148. is friends.

  1149. It's the story

  1150. of what God

  1151. has done and

  1152. is doing in

  1153. Christ.

  1154. It's the story

  1155. of his eternal

  1156. purposes, his

  1157. international

  1158. heart, his

  1159. unrelenting

  1160. kindness and his

  1161. pursuing grace.

  1162. So the story

  1163. here, Peter's

  1164. saying Jesus

  1165. has not just

  1166. come from

  1167. left field.

  1168. It's always

  1169. been about him.

  1170. I love it we

  1171. read with our

  1172. girls, the

  1173. Sally Lloyd

  1174. Jones, the

  1175. children's

  1176. storybooks

  1177. Bible.

  1178. You know

  1179. our phrase

  1180. and I love

  1181. this, every

  1182. story whispers

  1183. his name.

  1184. Every story

  1185. whispers his

  1186. name and

  1187. Peter just

  1188. doesn't give

  1189. them the

  1190. answer.

  1191. Remember

  1192. your math

  1193. teacher at

  1194. school, show

  1195. your work

  1196. in.

  1197. Well Peter

  1198. says come

  1199. on then.

  1200. Takes them

  1201. on a wee

  1202. history lesson

  1203. to see it.

  1204. Really quickly

  1205. verse 17

  1206. he takes

  1207. them to the

  1208. prophets.

  1209. They were

  1210. talking about

  1211. the suffering

  1212. servant, the

  1213. one God

  1214. would send

  1215. to willingly

  1216. and unflinchingly

  1217. lay down his

  1218. life to win

  1219. God's people.

  1220. That was

  1221. about Jesus.

  1222. That's his

  1223. point.

  1224. That was

  1225. Jesus.

  1226. He is the

  1227. suffering servant.

  1228. Verse 22

  1229. he takes them

  1230. to Moses.

  1231. Moses speaking

  1232. to his

  1233. generation about

  1234. a greater

  1235. prophet who

  1236. God would

  1237. raise up and

  1238. when the

  1239. prophet comes

  1240. the people

  1241. are to

  1242. listen, hang

  1243. on his

  1244. every word.

  1245. That was

  1246. Jesus.

  1247. Verse 25

  1248. to Abraham

  1249. who through

  1250. one of his

  1251. offspring God

  1252. was going to

  1253. bless the

  1254. nations of

  1255. the world.

  1256. that offspring

  1257. is Jesus.

  1258. Every story

  1259. whispers his

  1260. name.

  1261. This is the

  1262. point.

  1263. Every story

  1264. whispers his

  1265. name and

  1266. far from

  1267. being simply

  1268. an impressive

  1269. equation,

  1270. here's what's

  1271. on offer.

  1272. And I want

  1273. you to get

  1274. this.

  1275. If you've

  1276. tuned out

  1277. over the

  1278. last 10

  1279. minutes,

  1280. tune in

  1281. for this

  1282. last little

  1283. section.

  1284. Here's what's

  1285. on offer.

  1286. Verse 19

  1287. Come to

  1288. God so

  1289. that your

  1290. sins may be

  1291. wiped out.

  1292. Wiped out.

  1293. our sins.

  1294. I remember

  1295. in our

  1296. school classroom

  1297. when we

  1298. went from

  1299. blackboards

  1300. to white

  1301. boards.

  1302. Right?

  1303. Teacher asking

  1304. us when we

  1305. had a

  1306. blackboard,

  1307. does anyone

  1308. want to

  1309. clean the

  1310. blackboard?

  1311. Everyone's

  1312. hands by

  1313. their side.

  1314. But we

  1315. got a

  1316. whiteboard.

  1317. Man alive

  1318. we've never

  1319. seen anything

  1320. like this.

  1321. Got to

  1322. spray it,

  1323. got to

  1324. wipe it.

  1325. Anyone

  1326. want to

  1327. help?

  1328. Everyone's

  1329. hands up.

  1330. The joy

  1331. of making

  1332. something

  1333. spotlessly

  1334. clean.

  1335. And this

  1336. is what

  1337. this is

  1338. saying.

  1339. It wiped

  1340. out our

  1341. sins.

  1342. wiped out

  1343. our sins.

  1344. It's what

  1345. Christ has

  1346. done on

  1347. the cross.

  1348. It's what

  1349. it means

  1350. to be

  1351. his.

  1352. And at

  1353. times of

  1354. refreshing,

  1355. do you

  1356. see it?

  1357. Times of

  1358. refreshing may

  1359. come from

  1360. God.

  1361. And I

  1362. think that's

  1363. Peter's

  1364. exact point

  1365. as he

  1366. lands it

  1367. in verse

  1368. 26.

  1369. When God

  1370. raised up

  1371. his servant

  1372. he sent

  1373. him first

  1374. to you

  1375. to bless

  1376. you by

  1377. turning each

  1378. of you from

  1379. your wicked

  1380. ways.

  1381. It's almost

  1382. like he's

  1383. saying you

  1384. guys have

  1385. got first

  1386. dibs on

  1387. this

  1388. invitation.

  1389. And he

  1390. draws a

  1391. direct line

  1392. between

  1393. turning and

  1394. listening to

  1395. Jesus and

  1396. knowing God's

  1397. blessing.

  1398. God's blessing

  1399. is found in

  1400. responding rightly

  1401. to the risen and

  1402. glorified Christ.

  1403. And in so doing

  1404. knowing him,

  1405. knowing God is

  1406. your father.

  1407. Knowing him.

  1408. God's blessing

  1409. is found in

  1410. God's blessing

  1411. to him.

  1412. You know,

  1413. Luke's given

  1414. us two big

  1415. reasons,

  1416. right?

  1417. And I think

  1418. just as we

  1419. close the

  1420. question,

  1421. the end

  1422. becomes,

  1423. becomes a bit

  1424. more pointed,

  1425. it becomes,

  1426. are you

  1427. listening to

  1428. Jesus?

  1429. Are we

  1430. allowing his

  1431. voice?

  1432. And this is a

  1433. challenge for

  1434. all of us

  1435. here today.

  1436. Are we

  1437. allowing his

  1438. voice,

  1439. his truth,

  1440. as we encounter

  1441. him in the

  1442. pages of

  1443. scripture,

  1444. are we allowing

  1445. him to

  1446. direct and

  1447. to fill our

  1448. hearts and

  1449. our minds?

  1450. You know,

  1451. when was the

  1452. last time you

  1453. sat down and

  1454. you were just

  1455. thrilled with

  1456. the voice of

  1457. your shepherd?

  1458. When was the

  1459. last time that

  1460. he spoke deeply

  1461. into your soul?

  1462. Friends,

  1463. we need to be

  1464. listening to him.

  1465. We need him.

  1466. What a great

  1467. king.

  1468. What a wonderful

  1469. shepherd.

  1470. Listen,

  1471. our time is

  1472. gone,

  1473. but I just

  1474. want to give

  1475. you this one

  1476. story just as

  1477. we close.

  1478. It's a story

  1479. about my

  1480. friends down at

  1481. Charlotte Chapel,

  1482. Paul Rees.

  1483. He told me a

  1484. story about

  1485. six months

  1486. ago about

  1487. an older

  1488. man in his

  1489. congregation

  1490. who died,

  1491. and he did

  1492. the funeral.

  1493. The days leading

  1494. up to the

  1495. funeral,

  1496. he goes to

  1497. visit the

  1498. family,

  1499. and the

  1500. family gave

  1501. him the

  1502. old man's

  1503. Bible.

  1504. So Paul

  1505. gets home,

  1506. he's kind of

  1507. going through

  1508. it,

  1509. just interested

  1510. in what's

  1511. going on,

  1512. flicking

  1513. through it,

  1514. and all of a

  1515. sudden he

  1516. stops at a

  1517. page because

  1518. he notices a

  1519. huge circle,

  1520. huge circle

  1521. around this

  1522. page in the

  1523. guy's Bible.

  1524. I don't know

  1525. if you do

  1526. that, I do

  1527. that, just

  1528. underline it.

  1529. He's a

  1530. huge, huge

  1531. circle, and

  1532. it's a

  1533. circle around

  1534. the words

  1535. of Psalm

  1536. 130.

  1537. If you,

  1538. Lord, kept

  1539. a record of

  1540. sins, Lord,

  1541. who could

  1542. stand?

  1543. But with

  1544. you there is

  1545. forgiveness,

  1546. so that we

  1547. can with

  1548. reverence

  1549. serve you.

  1550. And this

  1551. old man

  1552. never got

  1553. over the

  1554. joy of

  1555. in Christ

  1556. being right

  1557. with God,

  1558. and knowing

  1559. him as

  1560. father, and

  1561. as he

  1562. particularly

  1563. approached

  1564. the end

  1565. of his

  1566. earthly

  1567. life,

  1568. knowing in

  1569. Christ what

  1570. the future

  1571. held.

  1572. Why?

  1573. Because of

  1574. this promise

  1575. in Psalm

  1576. 130.

  1577. Repent

  1578. then, and

  1579. turn to

  1580. God, so

  1581. that your

  1582. sins may be

  1583. wiped out,

  1584. that times of

  1585. refreshing may

  1586. come from the

  1587. Lord, and

  1588. that he may

  1589. send the

  1590. Messiah who

  1591. has been

  1592. appointed for

  1593. you, even

  1594. Jesus.

  1595. Heaven must

  1596. receive him,

  1597. until the

  1598. time comes

  1599. for God

  1600. to restore

  1601. everything

  1602. as he

  1603. promised long

  1604. ago through

  1605. his holy

  1606. prophets.

  1607. Friends, our

  1608. souls need

  1609. Acts 3.

  1610. Our souls need

  1611. Acts 3.

  1612. And may God

  1613. through his

  1614. spirit encourage

  1615. us this

  1616. morning.

  1617. Let's pray.

  1618. I heard the

  1619. voice of

  1620. Jesus say,

  1621. Behold, I

  1622. freely give.

  1623. The living

  1624. water, thirsty

  1625. one, stoop

  1626. down and

  1627. drink and

  1628. live.

  1629. I came to

  1630. Jesus and

  1631. I drank of

  1632. that life-giving

  1633. stream.

  1634. My thirst

  1635. was quenched,

  1636. my soul

  1637. revived, and

  1638. now I live

  1639. in him.

  1640. Father, thank

  1641. you so much

  1642. for your

  1643. love for

  1644. us.

  1645. Thank you

  1646. for giving

  1647. us your

  1648. spirit as

  1649. a guarantee

  1650. of the

  1651. future.

  1652. As a

  1653. Lord, I

  1654. pray for us

  1655. today, whoever

  1656. is watching

  1657. this, whether

  1658. we're in the

  1659. building, Father,

  1660. that you would

  1661. strengthen our

  1662. souls with

  1663. the promises

  1664. that we read

  1665. in Acts 3.

  1666. The promise,

  1667. the truth of

  1668. the glorified

  1669. Jesus.

  1670. Oh, Lord, help

  1671. us to find

  1672. our identity

  1673. in him and

  1674. everything that

  1675. he's accomplished

  1676. for us and

  1677. everything that

  1678. lies ahead of

  1679. us now and

  1680. wonderfully in

  1681. the future.

  1682. Father, thank

  1683. you that you

  1684. love us and

  1685. we pray these

  1686. things in

  1687. Jesus' name.

  1688. Amen.
