  1. Morning troops. Keep your Bible open in Acts 6. You're going to need that open.

  2. But I want to kick off looking back to Luke's first letter to his mate Theophilus in Luke.

  3. Because in Luke chapter 8, Jesus tells his boys and disciples a story.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  4. It's known as the parable of the sower.

  5. And to a large degree, the point of the story is this.

  6. Living things grow.

  7. A farmer in that scene wants a harvest, needs a harvest.

  8. And so he goes mental, sowing this seed everywhere.

  9. He doesn't mind where it lands.

  10. Wherever he goes, he's just sowing it all over the place.

  11. Now some of it lands on a path.

  12. Gets trampled on, gets eaten by birds. He gets nothing there.

  13. Some of it lands on rocky ground.

  14. Doesn't take root, gets no moisture, nothing grows.

  15. Some of it lands amongst thorns.

  16. They choke anything that grows.

  17. But some lands on good soil.

  18. And what lands on good soil grows like mad so that he makes 30, 60, even 100% profit on what he sows.

  19. And when Jesus tells his disciples that story back in Luke chapter 8,

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  20. he's actually preparing them for life in the book of Acts.

  21. He's saying, listen boys, as the farmer sowed the seed, preach the gospel to everyone and to anyone.

  22. Don't be stingy.

  23. Don't be selective about the who or the where.

  24. Everyone and everywhere needs to hear this word.

  25. And boys, you need to know this.

  26. That in some places, the devil will steal it away and you will get nothing.

  27. In some places, the floggings you get from the authorities will scare people off so that you get nothing.

  28. In other places, the enticements and the entrapments of the big city will allure people away and you'll get nothing.

  29. But I promise you that some of what you sow will find good soil.

  30. And their living things will grow.

  31. Boys, you need to get ready that although in Acts chapter 1 you're going to start off in a tiny little upper room,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  32. very quickly you're going to burst out of that thing.

  33. It's going to overflow.

  34. Because there is a harvest of people that the devil cannot snatch, persecution cannot steal away,

  35. and the enticements of the world cannot allure away from you.

  36. Living things grow.

  37. If you were here last week, I presume you did Acts chapter 5,

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  38. and you will have heard a Pharisee guy called Gamaliel say this,

  39. that actually if this is just some kind of mad rebel revolutionary,

  40. it will come to nothing like seed planted among the thorns.

  41. But if it's from God, this living thing will grow.

  42. To nick another one of Jesus' parables,

  43. from a teeny weeny little mustard seed to a mahousive tree.

  44. Because living things grow.

  45. And in Luke and in Acts, it is the word of God that gives life and grows life.

  46. The word of God will spread, the church will increase, and the kingdom will grow.

  47. And Luke is so desperate for us to see this in the book of Acts,

  48. that he gives us about six headlines from a newspaper

  49. that tell you this time and time and time and time again.

  50. You've seen it already in Acts by this point,

  51. but he then wants to make six headlines.

  52. He's seen already 120 in an upper room in Acts 1.

  53. That expanded to about 3,000 in Acts 2 after Pentecost.

  54. In Acts chapter 4, that goes to over 5,000.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  55. And he wants to keep giving you the point that living things grow.

  56. So, open your Bibles, track with me through his headlines.

  57. Acts chapter 6, verse 7.

    Acts 6:7

  58. We had it read to us.

  59. The word of God spread, the number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly,

  60. and a large number of priests become obedient to the faith.

  61. See the point?

  62. Living things grow.

  63. Flick over to Acts chapter 9, verse 31.

    Acts 9:31

  64. Second headline.

  65. Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace,

  66. was strengthened, and living in the fear of the Lord

  67. and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in number.

  68. Living things grow.

  69. Acts chapter 12, verse 24.

    Acts 12:24

  70. Look over a couple of pages.

  71. 12, 24.

  72. But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.

  73. Living things grow.

  74. Look at chapter 16, verse 5.

  75. So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.

  76. Next one.

  77. Acts chapter 19, verse 20.

    Acts 19:20

  78. In this way, the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

  79. Last one.

  80. Last words of the book.

  81. Acts 28, 30, and 31.

  82. For two whole years,

  83. Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him.

  84. He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ

  85. with boldness and without hindrance.

  86. What is the point?

  87. Living things grow.

  88. As the word of God spreads, the church increases, and the kingdom grows.

  89. So if you come back to Acts chapter 6 and you read the first verse,

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  90. it sounds like this is going to be a proper positive moment in the book of Acts.

  91. So Acts chapter 6, verse 1.

    Acts 6:1

  92. In those days when the number of disciples was increasing.

  93. All right.

  94. It's growing.

  95. Especially when you come off the back of chapter 5.

  96. Because in chapter 5, at times it felt like rocky ground.

  97. When the apostles have been flogged within an inch of their life.

  98. It's tough soil.

  99. At times it's felt more like the kind of thorny ground

  100. because Ananias and Sapphira have been lured away by the pleasures of this world.

  101. You think Acts chapter 6, finally, after those two, we've got good soil.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  102. But as most teenage boys know, growing is rarely without growing pains.

  103. And that's exactly what you see in Acts chapter 6.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  104. So read again verse 1.

  105. In those days when the number of disciples was increasing,

  106. the Hellenistic Jews complained against the Hebraic Jews

  107. because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.

  108. Now here's the issue.

  109. And it's kind of like a complicated ming and onion that's got multiple layers.

  110. The first layer is that the church is just growing.

  111. I'm a kind of 90s boy in terms of music,

  112. so it's kind of the notorious B.I.G. problem

  113. where the more people you come across, the more problems you see.

  114. As the church is increasing, there's creaks.

  115. It groans.

  116. But the second stage is that as it groans, there's complaining.

  117. They're probably speaking Hebrew.

  118. Obviously some of them are speaking Greek.

  119. But although they're in Jerusalem,

  120. there's that kind of natural Scottish language of gurning.

  121. Something's wrong here in Jerusalem.

  122. Now what's going on?

  123. Third layer, there's tension.

  124. Potential prejudice between Hebraic Jews and the Hellenistic Jews.

  125. Now they're just two different groups of people.

  126. One from outside the city who spoke Greek.

  127. Others from inside the city that spoke Hebrew.

  128. But it seems to be that the final complicating layer is

  129. that some people are looking at it and going,

  130. our group are not getting the necessary food that our widows need.

  131. And they're starving.

  132. Now a lot of older folk in that time would have come from outside the city

  133. back to Jerusalem because they would want to die and be buried in the holy city.

  134. Now it's always the Bible's view that widows should be cared for by their own families.

  135. See that in 1 Timothy chapter 5.

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  136. But if their own families aren't around or aren't able,

  137. then the Bible prescribes that it is the church that ought to care for the most alone,

  138. the most vulnerable in their community.

  139. But here's the problem.

  140. The church is growing great,

  141. but widows are starving.

  142. Far from great.

  143. And we need to see the potentially nasty flavor to this.

  144. As people look at it and see that it's one specific people group

  145. whose widows are being overlooked,

  146. people are at best questioning it.

  147. Maybe at worst they're going,

  148. is there some institutional racism inside this church in Jerusalem?

  149. Are the widows being overlooked,

  150. especially because of where they're from

  151. or maybe just the language that they speak?

  152. Now you start off the chapter going,

  153. oh, the church is growing.

  154. Wahey, happy days.

  155. And all of a sudden you're going,

  156. flip, this church could split.

  157. This could be a devastating moment in the book of Acts.

  158. Now what I want to show you this morning,

  159. we could go a million different ways with this text.

  160. All I want to do is give you four applications

  161. for you guys as Brunsfield Evangelical Church.

  162. Some of them are going to be for all of us together.

  163. Some of them are specifically going to be for the elders.

  164. But the first one is one that hits us all together

  165. and it's simple.

  166. Church.

  167. So speaking of all of us,

  168. church, people must not be overlooked.

  169. As a church, our primary responsibility

  170. is to care to one another in the church.

  171. Now you could instantly kind of come back at me and go,

  172. hang on, Primey, we're in the book of Acts here.

  173. The whole point is we're meant to take the gospel to the world.

  174. However, one of the clearest ways that the church witnesses to the world

  175. is the love and care that we show for our own people.

  176. And in the church, people must not be overlooked.

  177. You've seen that already in Acts chapter 2 at the end,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  178. again at the end of Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  179. If someone is in need,

  180. we ought to be the ones who meet that need.

  181. If the church has people who are hungry,

  182. the church should feed them their food.

  183. If someone is in need,

  184. it is our responsibility.

  185. However, here's the struggle.

  186. And hasn't that been particularly clear in the last 18 months?

  187. That there are periods in the church of life

  188. where it's easy to accidentally overlook people.

  189. Especially when everyone can't be in the room.

  190. We don't have a scooby who's watching this.

  191. And so we need to make sure in this season

  192. that the people we haven't seen for a while

  193. or heard from a while

  194. may not be either physically or spiritually being overlooked.

  195. And whose responsibility is that?

  196. All of us.

  197. Church.

  198. People must not be overlooked.

  199. However,

  200. it's actually more sinister here.

  201. The sinister reality is that even within a church,

  202. it can be possible for people to be deliberately overlooked.

  203. In the book of Acts,

  204. Luke wants to show us on repeat

  205. the attractiveness of the purpose of God

  206. to bring people from diverse backgrounds

  207. into the church of his son.

  208. He repeatedly shows us

  209. the power of the gospel of Jesus

  210. to unite people who were once enemies

  211. and to break down the barriers and walls

  212. that have culturally divided people for centuries.

  213. The church is meant to be multicolored,

  214. multilingual,

  215. and multiclass.

  216. However,

  217. the book of Acts is not rose-tinted.

  218. It is real life.

  219. And since then,

  220. and probably still today,

  221. some of the prejudices that we held

  222. before we were Christians

  223. continue to have a hangover

  224. now that we are Christians,

  225. which means we need to be on guard about this

  226. in Grace Mount Community Church

  227. and in Brunsfield Evangelical Church.

  228. Now, maybe that's on issues like classism.

  229. And we need to make sure

  230. that we don't look down on people

  231. because of where they have come from

  232. or what their backstory has been.

  233. In the church,

  234. Christ unites us

  235. more than class divides us.

  236. Our identity is not in our class.

  237. It is in Christ.

  238. That is not meant to be a dividing barrier

  239. for membership

  240. or leadership in Christ's church.

  241. But we need to be careful

  242. not just on classism,

  243. but on racism.

  244. If someone enters our church

  245. and they raise a concern

  246. that they feel like an outsider

  247. because of where they're from

  248. or the language they speak,

  249. we need to be asking ourselves

  250. the hard question

  251. that we are not

  252. in some subtle, unconscious way

  253. overlooking some people.

  254. When our church is predominantly white

  255. in a community

  256. that is increasingly diverse,

  257. we need to ask the hard questions

  258. that we are not

  259. maybe even deliberately

  260. overlooking people.

  261. Because in the church,

  262. people are not to be overlooked.

  263. Definitely not if they're needy

  264. and absolutely not

  265. just because they are different.

  266. But that's the issue in Acts 6.

  267. Widows are being overlooked

  268. from one particular people group.

  269. Now, how do the apostles respond?

  270. Have a look back in Acts 6.

  271. Look at verse 2.

  272. So, the 12, that's the apostles,

  273. gathered all of the disciples together

  274. and said,

  275. it would not be right for us

  276. to neglect the ministry

  277. of the word of God

  278. in order to wait on tables.

  279. So notice what the apostles do.

  280. They take the lead.

  281. They do it immediately.

  282. No time for this to fester.

  283. And they do it by gathering

  284. the entire number of disciples

  285. around them.

  286. And notice how they start.

  287. It's a surprising thing.

  288. They don't start by saying

  289. what they must do.

  290. They start by saying

  291. what they must not do.

  292. They start with something

  293. that is not a right response.

  294. So they say,

  295. okay, overlooking people

  296. is a priority.

  297. We must not overlook people.

  298. However, it's not the only priority.

  299. It would not be right for us

  300. to neglect the ministry

  301. of the word of God

  302. in order to wait on tables.

  303. So here's the second thing

  304. this morning,

  305. second application.

  306. And this one,

  307. especially to the elders in the room.

  308. So, Shanksy,

  309. Alice is watching at home.

  310. Anyone else who's an elder?

  311. Here's the important thing

  312. we must remember this morning.

  313. Word ministry

  314. must not be neglected.

  315. So people must not be overlooked.

  316. But word ministry

  317. for elders in a church

  318. must not be neglected.

  319. Here's the two things

  320. that are not right.

  321. Widows being overlooked

  322. or the apostles and elders

  323. overlooking the responsibility

  324. to be teachers of the word.

  325. Now, that is not the apostles

  326. saying that waiting on tables

  327. is beneath them.

  328. Like the queen saying,

  329. wiping skidmuffs of a bog

  330. is beneath her.

  331. That's not the point.

  332. It's not that they're too good

  333. to do this.

  334. The point is,

  335. it's more like a nurse

  336. in a hospital

  337. who's saying,

  338. I cannot leave my post

  339. on the ward

  340. to go and cook meals

  341. for everyone

  342. because that would be

  343. neglecting what my role

  344. is in this place.

  345. It's not saying that

  346. the chef is less needy

  347. than the,

  348. not needy is the wrong word,

  349. but needed,

  350. than the chef.

  351. But actually,

  352. the hospital will fall to bits

  353. if both parties

  354. don't play their vital roles

  355. in this thing.

  356. Without both,

  357. the hospital falls apart.

  358. It's not a difference

  359. of importance,

  360. but rather a difference

  361. of calling.

  362. Now, come back to the thing

  363. we started at the start.

  364. Living things grow.

  365. And if the church

  366. is to grow,

  367. it is the word

  368. that will give life

  369. and preserve life.

  370. So the life

  371. and growth

  372. of a church

  373. is dependent

  374. on the apostles'

  375. teaching of the word

  376. of God.

  377. How did the widows

  378. come into the church

  379. in the first place?

  380. Through the teaching

  381. of the word of God.

  382. What's going to sustain

  383. the widows

  384. even in their hunger

  385. for physical food?

  386. The teaching

  387. of the apostles' words.

  388. Now, they do need

  389. the spiritual food

  390. as well as

  391. the physical food,

  392. but whose responsibility

  393. is the spiritual food

  394. in the life

  395. of a widow?

  396. The apostles.

  397. And so just as

  398. a nurse needs

  399. to stay

  400. on her ward,

  401. the apostles

  402. need to stay

  403. in the ward.

  404. Now, it is

  405. significant here.

  406. The apostles

  407. don't try and silence

  408. the complaints.

  409. They don't try

  410. and spin the narrative

  411. to preserve

  412. their own reputation.

  413. They don't try

  414. and hide it

  415. in darkness.

  416. They acknowledge

  417. the complaints.

  418. That is vital.

  419. Widows are being

  420. overlooked

  421. and that must not happen,

  422. but the first thing

  423. they do is to make sure

  424. that everyone knows

  425. this is not going

  426. to be

  427. something that

  428. we deal with

  429. personally.

  430. Our task,

  431. our service here

  432. is the ministry

  433. of the word.

  434. So elders,

  435. you're not a psychologist,

  436. you're not a social worker,

  437. you're not an entertainer,

  438. you're not a delivery driver,

  439. a gardener,

  440. a community worker,

  441. or a politician,

  442. you are a minister

  443. of the word.

  444. When people meet you,

  445. they ought to be

  446. served the word.

  447. Just like you can tell

  448. by looking at a farmer

  449. how much he's committed

  450. to his harvest

  451. by how much he sows the seed,

  452. you can tell

  453. by looking at an elder

  454. how committed

  455. they are to

  456. their people

  457. and their community

  458. by how much

  459. they serve up

  460. the word of God.

  461. And if you

  462. were here last week

  463. for Acts chapter 5,

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  464. you'll know that

  465. doesn't just happen

  466. from a pulpit,

  467. it happens as they go

  468. house to house

  469. to house to house

  470. to house.

  471. Elders are not

  472. to hide up here,

  473. they're to go

  474. to the houses

  475. of the most vulnerable,

  476. the most needy

  477. to serve

  478. the scriptures.

  479. Especially when

  480. the church

  481. is on the verge

  482. of split

  483. because of prejudice

  484. and potential racism.

  485. What does the church

  486. need most in that moment?

  487. For its leaders

  488. to teach the gospel

  489. that doesn't just

  490. unite us to God

  491. but unites us

  492. to each other.

  493. The answer

  494. in this moment

  495. is not to split

  496. the church

  497. into ethnic groups

  498. but to preach

  499. the gospel

  500. that unites

  501. every group.

  502. And in these moments

  503. of tension

  504. the church

  505. needs its teachers

  506. to teach.

  507. But actually

  508. when it comes back around

  509. see if you look

  510. to verse 4

  511. they kind of reinforce

  512. this priority

  513. in verse 4

  514. and they add something

  515. to it

  516. where it says

  517. and we will give

  518. our attention

  519. to prayer

  520. and the ministry

  521. of the word.

  522. An elder

  523. who does word ministry

  524. without giving

  525. their attention

  526. to prayer

  527. is still

  528. neglecting

  529. word ministry.

  530. To preach

  531. without praying

  532. is to neglect

  533. preaching.

  534. It's like

  535. trying to send

  536. a letter

  537. without a stamp

  538. on it.

  539. It might have

  540. good content

  541. but it's going

  542. nowhere.

  543. And just as

  544. the power

  545. of the preacher

  546. is not in his

  547. preaching

  548. but in the word

  549. of God

  550. the power

  551. of his preaching

  552. is not so much

  553. in his preaching

  554. but in his praying.

  555. above the desk

  556. of my study

  557. where I write

  558. my sermons

  559. I've got a whiteboard

  560. that's just full of quotes

  561. that I've picked up

  562. from somewhere

  563. I've no idea

  564. where they're from

  565. but there's one

  566. right at the top

  567. that every week

  568. says

  569. he who has

  570. truly prayed

  571. has completed

  572. the half

  573. of his study.

  574. So elders

  575. are you doing

  576. that half

  577. of your study?

  578. Because my guess

  579. is

  580. prayer can be

  581. often more

  582. overlooked

  583. than widows

  584. are.

  585. Living things

  586. grow

  587. but they will

  588. only grow

  589. if the elders

  590. give attention

  591. to prayer

  592. and to the

  593. ministry

  594. of the word.

  595. Now

  596. here's what

  597. we're up to

  598. so far.

  599. There's still

  600. a problem

  601. but all we've

  602. kind of got

  603. is there's two

  604. things that

  605. wouldn't be right.

  606. It's not right

  607. that the

  608. widows

  609. are overlooked

  610. it's not right

  611. that the elders

  612. neglect preaching

  613. and prayer.

  614. So where do we go?

  615. Something needs

  616. to happen.

  617. So look at verse 3

  618. look at what the

  619. apostles lead

  620. them into.

  621. Verse 3

  622. Brothers and sisters

  623. choose seven men

  624. who are among you

  625. who are known

  626. to be full of the

  627. spirit and wisdom

  628. we will turn

  629. responsibility

  630. over to them.

  631. So here's a second

  632. application to elders

  633. third one in total

  634. but second to elders.

  635. Elders

  636. you must

  637. turn responsibility

  638. over to the

  639. church.

  640. Notice here

  641. the answers to

  642. the church's

  643. problems

  644. is the whole

  645. church.

  646. The apostles

  647. can't do everything

  648. in the church

  649. but thankfully

  650. the apostles

  651. aren't the only

  652. ones in the

  653. church

  654. and word

  655. ministry

  656. is not the

  657. only ministry

  658. in the church.

  659. Look at verse

  660. the word ministry

  661. comes up in verse 2

  662. it would not be right

  663. for us to neglect

  664. the ministry of the

  665. word and it also

  666. comes up in verse 4

  667. and we will give

  668. our attention to

  669. prayer and the

  670. ministry of the

  671. word.

  672. However

  673. verse 1 uses

  674. the same word

  675. and when it says

  676. because their

  677. widows were being

  678. overlooked in the

  679. daily distribution

  680. of food

  681. the same word

  682. ministry is in

  683. there.

  684. There's different

  685. types of ministry

  686. in the church

  687. there are some

  688. who do the

  689. ministering of the

  690. word and there

  691. are some who do

  692. the ministering of

  693. food

  694. but both are

  695. vital ministries

  696. both are ministries

  697. areas of service

  698. that serve the

  699. church and serve

  700. the Lord Jesus

  701. Christ.

  702. Again it is not

  703. that one is more

  704. important than the

  705. other they are

  706. both vital they're

  707. just different.

  708. What is vital is

  709. the elders turn

  710. responsibility over.

  711. Come back to the

  712. illustration of the

  713. hospital what would

  714. kill a hospital is

  715. if a nurse also

  716. tried to be a

  717. chef a cleaner an

  718. administrator and a

  719. security guard.

  720. the thing falls to

  721. pieces.

  722. What makes a

  723. hospital thrive when

  724. every different

  725. person plays their

  726. distinctive roles.

  727. What kills a

  728. church when it

  729. relies on just a few

  730. people who are

  731. trying to do

  732. everything.

  733. What makes a

  734. church thrive when

  735. everyone is fulfilling

  736. their distinctive

  737. roles.

  738. And here's where I

  739. need to make a

  740. confession and repent

  741. and go my name's

  742. Andy and I'm an

  743. irritating micromanaging

  744. control freak.

  745. And I think it's a

  746. temptation that a lot

  747. of pastors and

  748. elders fall into but I

  749. will drive myself to

  750. burnout and my church

  751. to a burning car crash

  752. if I try and keep my

  753. finger in every pie and

  754. control over every

  755. detail like a nurse

  756. trying to do

  757. everything in a

  758. hospital.

  759. And often I need to

  760. ask my church for

  761. forgiveness for the

  762. times when out of my

  763. arrogance and anxiety

  764. I've neglected my

  765. main calling and I've

  766. underemployed everyone

  767. else's gifts in the

  768. church.

  769. And so as leaders our

  770. instinct needs to be the

  771. same as Acts 6 where we

  772. get over ourselves and we

  773. remember we're not the only

  774. people in the church and we

  775. do the same as what the

  776. apostles do.

  777. To solve the problem we

  778. gather everyone, verse 2.

  779. To remedy the problem we

  780. employ all of the members,

  781. verse 3.

  782. And employing all the

  783. members, verse 5, they

  784. please everyone and to

  785. meet the need they

  786. empower specific members

  787. to deal with a specific

  788. issue in verse 6.

  789. Now that shows us when

  790. these moments of

  791. tension come up in this

  792. church, the way to

  793. preserve unity in the

  794. face of complaints and

  795. prejudice is to decide

  796. to face the issue

  797. together.

  798. Living things grow but

  799. the church collectively

  800. grows through the active

  801. ministry of every single

  802. person.

  803. So, elders, keep

  804. turning responsibility

  805. over.

  806. And here's my final

  807. application, number 4,

  808. that comes to everyone.

  809. Church, be known for

  810. being full of the spirit,

  811. of wisdom, and of faith.

  812. Be known for being full

  813. of wisdom, full of the

  814. spirit, and full of faith.

  815. What happens in these

  816. verses and acts is the

  817. church becomes the

  818. answer to its own

  819. problems.

  820. Both in its leaders as

  821. they give attention to

  822. the word and prayer, and

  823. as all its members begin

  824. to fulfill their

  825. ministries.

  826. And that happens as the

  827. church look out for,

  828. choose, and present

  829. seven blokes who are

  830. known.

  831. For what?

  832. Not a CV that impresses

  833. in Jerusalem.

  834. It's not what they're

  835. looking for.

  836. But for character that

  837. impresses King Jesus.

  838. These men, verse 3, are

  839. known for being full of

  840. the spirit.

  841. That means that the

  842. spirit is the driving

  843. influence in their life.

  844. These men are being

  845. known for full of wisdom.

  846. That means they take the

  847. apostles' teaching and they

  848. apply it to every aspect of

  849. their life.

  850. They're known for being

  851. full of faith.

  852. That means that what their

  853. lives are impacted by is

  854. not the visible and the

  855. temporary, but the

  856. invisible and the eternal.

  857. And these guys stand out in

  858. Jerusalem as being

  859. different because of their

  860. relationship to Jesus.

  861. These types of people would

  862. stand out in Brunsfield

  863. because of their relationship

  864. to God.

  865. They're known for it.

  866. That's a challenge, isn't it?

  867. What are you known for?

  868. It's a reminder.

  869. See if you look at one of the

  870. names.

  871. Just got time to look at one.

  872. In verse 5 you get this guy

  873. called Nicholas.

  874. Notice how he's described.

  875. He's described as a convert.

  876. Now if you're new to

  877. Brunsfield, new to church,

  878. that's something you need to

  879. get that you don't join a

  880. church simply by coming.

  881. You join Jesus' church by

  882. being converted.

  883. His word gives you a new

  884. life as you repent of your

  885. sins, trust in Jesus and

  886. trust that he forgives your

  887. sins.

  888. This isn't a club.

  889. It is a hospital where

  890. Jesus' crucifixion extracts

  891. the fatal sin within you.

  892. Where Jesus' righteousness

  893. imputes his perfect record to

  894. you and Jesus' resurrection

  895. life implants eternal life

  896. within you.

  897. And when you are converted by

  898. him, there's a change in you.

  899. Like in Nicholas, he was a

  900. convert.

  901. And that change is recognized,

  902. it's known in the church.

  903. So much so that they spot it,

  904. they empower it and they employ

  905. it to overlook the church and

  906. make sure that no one is

  907. overlooked.

  908. That's a searching question.

  909. What are you known for?

  910. And has that changed since you

  911. became a Christian?

  912. Full of the spirit, full of

  913. wisdom, full of faith.

  914. There's a great story that Paul

  915. tells, not a story, he writes to

  916. the master of a former slave who

  917. had bolted from this guy.

  918. But the slave, when he bolted,

  919. met Paul, probably in prison.

  920. He gets saved and Paul writes back

  921. to the master.

  922. And what he says about him is

  923. this.

  924. He was once useless to you.

  925. But now he is useful both to you

  926. and to me.

  927. That's what Jesus does.

  928. He saves us when we were useless.

  929. But then what does he do?

  930. He fills us with his spirit.

  931. He teaches us his wisdom.

  932. He strengthens our faith so that we

  933. become useful in Jesus' church.

  934. And Brunsfield Evangelical will be

  935. at its healthiest when all of its

  936. members are flourishing in these

  937. three things.

  938. My conversion from the old useless

  939. me means that I'm now full of the

  940. spirit, full of his wisdom, and full

  941. of faith.

  942. You do not come to church as a

  943. spectator.

  944. And that's the danger of the last

  945. 18 months.

  946. We've kind of got into that place,

  947. particularly if we're still watching

  948. from home, where we think, I come

  949. here as a consumer.

  950. Not true.

  951. You don't come here as a consumer.

  952. You definitely don't come here as a

  953. complainer.

  954. You come here as a convert if you're

  955. a Christian.

  956. A convert to serve, to care for the

  957. needy, to strive for unity, and to

  958. take the gospel to the ends of the

  959. earth.

  960. Which means, if you're sat here and

  961. you're a Christian this morning, it

  962. needs to be your thing when you come

  963. to church to go, I'm going to make

  964. sure no one's overlooked.

  965. I'm going to make sure the needy are

  966. cared for.

  967. I'm going to make sure no one is

  968. starving.

  969. I'm going to make sure if Shanks is

  970. doing something that he shouldn't be

  971. doing because he's an elder, so he

  972. should just be doing the word and

  973. prayer, and he's doing stuff that I

  974. could do to take off him, then I'm

  975. going to take it off him.

  976. Because it is only as the elders are

  977. fixated on their thing, and all of us

  978. are doing our thing, that the word of

  979. God is going to take off in this

  980. place.

  981. And by the way, don't then take that

  982. as an excuse to go, fine, they get to

  983. preach and teach, and I don't have to

  984. do any of that evangelism thing.

  985. Nonsense.

  986. One of the guys who's chosen as a deacon

  987. in these verses is a guy called Stephen,

  988. and you're going, fine, Stephen, what's he

  989. going to do?

  990. He's going to wait on tables.

  991. Look at what he's going to do next

  992. week.

  993. The rest of Acts chapter 6, the Holy

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  994. Acts chapter 7, he preaches one of the

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  995. best sermons you'll ever hear and gets

  996. murdered for it.

  997. And you're going, Stephen, you've just

  998. been set apart to wait on tables.

  999. You're stealing the elder's job.

  1000. Nah.

1001. Just because something is their priority

1002. doesn't mean it's also something that we

1003. get to be involved with.

1004. We're to go and do ministry.

1005. We're to go and be the church.

1006. Because when a church is faced with a

1007. threat to its unity, we need to see here

1008. the answer is found within the own

  1009. church.

1010. And look back to verse 7 as we finish,

1011. because look what it unleashes.

1012. When every member is doing his ministry,

1013. every member is provided for, when none

1014. are needy, none are overlooked, when the

1015. elders are giving their attention to the

1016. word of God, look what happens, verse 7.

1017. So, the word of God spread.

1018. The number of disciples increased rapidly.

1019. And a large number of priests became

  1020. obedient to the faith.

1021. They were groaning at the start.

1022. But all of a sudden, they're growing again.

1023. It looked like at the start of Acts chapter 6,

    Acts 6 chapter mention

1024. he was a hurdle for the gospel.

1025. But by the Spirit, he takes what is a hurdle

1026. and he makes it a stepping stone for the gospel.

1027. Now, I'm not a mathematician, but apparently

1028. there would have been about 10,000 priests in

  1029. Jerusalem at this time.

1030. And Luke says that a large number of the

1031. priests became obedient to the faith.

1032. What do you reckon a large number of 10,000 is?

  1033. A couple of thousand?

  1034. 4,000?

  1035. 5,000?

1036. Now, here's the challenge then.

1037. They were growing and there was problems.

1038. What's now happened even more?

  1039. More growth.

1040. What's going to come at them?

  1041. More problems.

  1042. People will be overlooked.

1043. The elders will be tempted to give away their

1044. attention to the word and to try and solve all the

  1045. problems.

1046. And so the whole thing in this beautiful

1047. livingness kicks off all over again.

1048. Which means that there will never be a moment in

1049. our church where we don't need to get these

  1050. things right.

  1051. Right.

1052. No one should be overlooked.

1053. The elders must not neglect the ministry of the word

  1054. and prayer.

1055. Therefore, elders must turn responsibility over.

1056. And church, you must continue to be known for being

1057. full of wisdom, full of the Spirit, and full of faith.

1058. Because here's what you can guarantee.

1059. That kind of life grows.

1060. And whatever challenge hits us next, more COVID stuff,

1061. more lockdown, more tension in the church,

1062. the Spirit can take through the word of God,

1063. even the worst hurdle for the gospel,

1064. and make it into a stepping stone for more growth.

  1065. Shall we pray?

1066. Our gracious Father in heaven,

1067. we thank you that when we were dead in our sins,

1068. you graciously gave us life in the Lord Jesus Christ.

1069. Thank you for the reminder this morning that that is not

1070. just a life on our own, but a life within the living church

1071. of the living Lord Jesus.

1072. And I pray for this congregation.

1073. I pray for my little church up the road.

1074. That we would be members known for full of wisdom,

1075. full of faith, and full of the Spirit.

1076. And that together we would navigate the challenges of the world,

1077. the flesh, and the devil.

1078. And that you would work all things for your glory,

1079. for our good, and for the growth of the gospel

1080. in this city and beyond.

1081. And we pray these things for Christ's sake.

  1082. Amen.

  1083. Amen.

  1084. Amen.

  1085. Amen.

  1086. Amen.

  1087. Amen.

  1088. Amen.

  1089. Amen.

  1090. Amen.

  1091. Amen.

  1092. Amen.

  1093. Amen.

  1094. Amen.

  1095. Amen.

  1096. Amen.

  1097. Amen.
